This week I lost my grandma, and so spent a lot of my listening time re-visiting some of my favourite comfort shows. Those include @tellnotalespod and @storiesfromylelmore. The care and compassion of TNT, and how both silly and ernest SFY is bring me great joy and comfort. 🫂

@hinaypod Episode 56 - Dambuhala (Giant): Hearing Donner and Mari together post-Christmas episodes is everything. They are so cuuuute! I love that they went back to talk to the Waheela, and that she had so much to say about the ancient beings of the world. So much lore for us to try to make sense of! And it raised some interesting questions about Mari herself... ✨

@forgedbondspod - Chapter 16: Di and Ares' conversation was so funny from an outside perspective, knowing what Di knows. I was also internally screaming at some points Di. The surprise for Phae and Hera was so sweet! Their friends really care about them. Oof, another tense conversation between Hermes and Zeus. What could big Z possibly want with Circe (renowned for her knowledge of potions and ability to turn people into animals) and Hecate (associated with boundaries [of cities, borders, doorways, between worlds like the living/dead or mortal/immortal], witchcraft, herbalism and the moon)? I don't trust him one bit. 💍

@vestaclinicpod Episode 23 - Code Squeaky: Another one of my comfort shows, just when I needed it. I immediately listened this a second time, just to make sure I absorbed all of the Calyxy and Prof lore! Their relationship sounded so lovely. And all that with the squikir rustling around the vents in the background. As soon as Sec told Faye that the Prof used to adjust the vents above him, I just KNEW there would be something hidden away up there. Something with a weird shape...weren't Faye and Sec looking for something with a weird shape to connect to him? 🤔 Also very curious to see what was on that comms. ⚕️

@monkeymanproductions Waiting For October S1E7.5 - Yvonne: I absolutely love a monologue, especially when it's voiced by the talented Tina Case. We hear Yvonne struggling with her place in Karo's story, her own wants and needs, her own story, and whether they can all coexist. There are some big feelings that both Yvonne and Karo are dealing with, and I really hope they find a way through it all together. 🎃

Iiiiiiit’s Audio Drama Sunday! And I’m sick but I’m still writing this post because this week in audio drama absolutely slaps. Beware of some light spoilers ahead, let’s GO

🔥 oh man, @camlannpod landed this season finale beautifully. I’m so glad our crew triumphed and that the world is fuller than any of them thought and that the story can go on and change. I have to relisten, this is such a good show. If you haven’t listened to Camlann yet, now is the perfect time, go LISTEN.

🐷 @hellofromthehallowoods is dark but it only occasionally truly scares me. This episode, I was scared. WHAT is Shanks and WHAT is up with that freakin puppet and WHAT ARE THEY GONNA DO? I feel the weight of these stories tangibly and I worry, just like our eyes in the skies, for the fate of the people I care about.

👽 One of the strengths of Among the Stars and Bones is its ability to put extremely normal people in absolutely harrowing situations, and in this episode, when it's your second harrowing situation in less than half a year, what are our heroes going to do but be like "Well Sure, This Might As Well Happen." Contrast that with the reactions of Captain Francis and Johann (played with deftness and skill by Oliver Smith and Jerron Bacat), who are experiencing the horrors for the first time and Not Doing Well and that's horror babe. I'm especially interested in Johann, what a fascinating character.

🙃 I started @worldgonewrongpod this week and it is everything I like. It's a) a fictional advice show in b) extraordinary circumstances that's c) very funny and sweet and d) hits like a brick in a sock. If that tweet by John Rogers ("every day i remember with gritted teeth that people lived perfectly fulfilling lives in during the fall of the roman empire," if I may paraphrase) was a show, it'd be this show. I love it.

Audiodrama Sunday 10/27/2024

Happy ace week! As an ace audiodrama fan, I love how asexual friendly this community is. Special shoutout to @itmeblog, I'm so not normal about Nova InCoPod.

@lostterminalpod - This show will not stop introducing new AI characters and I'm absolutely here for it. I'm such a sucker for protagonists who are fundamentally inhuman but want so badly to be people.

@asbestos4president - NEW HAM! I love this show's sense of humor so much. TTS Twitch chat being a constant part of the story is so good.

@victoriocity - I'm finally listening to the rest of season 3. The telegraph scene was incredible. I'm definitely going to check out High Vaultage once I finish the last few episodes of the season.

Starwhal Odyssey - A whole episode focused on the Usegoni! I love it! “At first, it feels pointless to try and choke out a shrimp” was great, and the psychic pressure cooker is incredible.

@worldsbeyondpod - The party is reunited! They're just ending every single episode with a cliffhanger this arc huh?

@storiesfromylelmore - The parts of this episode where Voran is bullying Rion really made me want to punch Voran. Like true anger at a fictional character. Rion getting bullied hits so much harder with the insight we have into his character now. Besides that, I love how you can infer exactly what one of Keryth's moms said to the coven heads offscreen.

@worldgonewrongpod - This episode really nailed everything I’m feeling about the election. Seeing so many people on Tumblr who are refusing to vote for Kamala is endlessly frustrating to me. I’m always curious how episodes like this will age. Need to remind myself to relisten to this after the election.

@midstpodcast - Unend has been so chill so far, and I don't trust it. I know Third Person. I'm just waiting for something horrible to happen.

Mission Rejected - Great episode, so many good moments. I really have no clue how Athena and the Admiral selling real estate in New Atlantis is going to tie in to the main season plot with O.G., his scheme seems totally harmless, which I guess is why Athena is going along with it.

@keepitsteadypod - New episode! This show is so good, then oh shit the ending. I need to give this show a full relisten from the beginning at some point. Maybe in prep for the finale.

I didn't even listen to everything new this week. Need to find time for the Kingmaker Bodyswap ASAP.

If you're after something upbeat, lively, but low-stakes and wholesome, I really cannot recommend enough checking out Stories From Ylelmore.

It's an all-ages slice-of-life urban fantasy about three kids: a witch, a werewolf, and a curse-bearer, who go on everyday adventures and try to solve a few mysteries. It's five episodes in, and has nice soundwork, excellent music choices, satisfying character development and is just, a lot of fun.

I adored the episode Love Letters, and not just because of the conversation about Elas’ parents (as a married aroace I am so thrilled. Like. So fucking thrilled. Because I never see anything like that in media) but also because of the whole noir bit which absolutely killed me (cupcake?? I’m melting)

(Also Kyreth’s mom swearing at the other mom??? What is the drama there????)

@ameliapodcast S5 Part 2: When I was talking about S5 Part 1, I didn't mention the music, which has been absolutely incredible. Changing the theme music to match the episode's theme/time period is genius, and so well done! The idea of telling their stories in reverse is so interesting, and it's really having me think about how each disappearance would have impacted the ones we heard before. I still technically have 2-3 episodes left of this part, but I just had to say something now! 🐦‍🔥

@storiesfromylelmore Episode 212 - Being Puce: Season finale time!! I always love how straight up Keryth and Rion are with Elas. We won't give you permission to bully us just so you don't feel as bad about it. Good for them! And then their background adventure with the river monster was hilarious. That was such a great conversation between Elas and their mom. I think we've all had feelings like that before. And then Elas took a small step! They said no to Voran! I'm so proud of them!! Ruvyn knowing everything from their podcast and sitting on it is kinda terrifying. I'm sad that the season's over, but it was SO GOOD, and I can't wait for the next one!! ✨

@forgedbondspod Chapter 7: Dite and Phae texting through the first of many wedding rehearsals is adorable. Also as someone planning their own wedding, multiple wedding rehearsals sounds like a nightmare... I appreciate Calliope sharing the details of Zeus' glare for us! Also I love how the respective besties are so excited that Dite and Phae are becoming friends. The sound design for the forge scene was very good. 💍

@vestaclinicpod Episode 17 - Drifter: A new species this episode, Gralli from Pluto! I burst out laughing when I heard what this episode's patient had chosen for syr name - Goggles! Too cute! I too would like to hear more about Faye's family. More Professor backstory!! Finally!! It sounds like quite the mystery...I have many thoughts (mostly silly ones) about where they might have stored their consciousness... Also a very poignant line from Faye, "When is grief ever convenient?" ⚕️

@hinaypod Episode 49.2 - Snow Village: A flashback episode to early Donner and Murphy, so of course it made me sad. They love each other so much! But they can't work (then)! They (possibly) pretend they don't remember the super deep, emotional drunken conversation they had! Ahhh! 💔

@hauntnowpod Season 1: I am loving this ghost story! It was so cool thinking back to The Narrator and realizing she was telling the story to Eulalie. I like that we heard from both Eulalie and Frankie's perspectives. The sound design was really cool, conveying so many places and feelings, and the state that Frankie was in. The acting was also fantastic; I had to stop doing dishes and hold tears in when Parker was begging Eulalie to wake up. I hope they're able to save Frankie from the house and the ghost hunters! 👻

@monkeymanproductions' Waiting For October S1 Episode 4.5 - Frederick: We got to follow Frederick as they went on an adventure trying to find their place! One of the lines at the beginning brought me immediately to tears, "I wish Yvonne had stayed. She smells like home." 😭 Ishani was very good at bringing this kitty to life, and I had a lot of fun hearing the different shenanigans Frederick was getting into. I just hope they remember their way back and forth between worlds! 🐈

Happy #AudioDramaSunday! A day late lol, I was slow this week. But Kingmaker Histories is back! Super Suits is back! Starfall is back! So much good work this week! Let’s goooooo

🪐 I have been listening to Leylines since it started because I love Good Story Guild, and Leylines is so cool. It’s a prestige family drama wrapped in a neat scifi concept and this week’s episode in particular really drive home the family dynamic that makes this show special. Listen to Leylines and cry about brothers with me.

🐺 Stories from Ylelmore continues to absolutely kill me. I think Rion’s problems with his werewolfism resonates with a lot of different real life challenges to being alive—racism, transphobia—but in this ep it felt like a potent nod to ableism as well. At what point does someone get to do something risky for their own mental wellbeing? At what point do one’s friends get to deny your choices to protect you? I don’t want to see what this is going to do to the kids’ friendship, except that I have to know.

🌊 Tales from the Fringes of Reality always presents us with these small perfect images of family care or unexpected friendship, but Paul Warren’s sentient moss is maybe the best thing I’ve ever heard. The focus this episode on slowing down, appreciating the moment, and resting really struck a chord. It was perfect.

😈 Forgive Me! is SO GOOD. This episode bright in Jeffrey Cranor, always a treat, to tackle fears both real and intangible that religion brings into our lives. I was raised religious and…woof. Like this character is right, the candy-coated Sunday School version of the Bible is incomplete, and does nothing to prepare a kid for the real and actual danger in the world. Especially in light of the recent hurricanes which are likely exacerbated by climate change, how are we supposed to react? It has a pretty satisfying ending for a question without many good answers.

🌝 Dead Space: Deep Cover ended this week as well, and oh jeez louise. This makes me want to play the video game, and i don’t really do video games. Highly recommend, it is a scifi horror treat.
