This is a stream of consciousness type of post and I don’t even know where it’s going but there’s all this Lover talk on the dash and I love Lover with all my heart because a) she’s got hit after hit and b) she got me through a really tough time in the fall of 2019 and for that I’m going to always be grateful.

The idea that it lacks “narrative” is so interesting to me because a) I’m not sure I see it that way but b) I don’t think albums necessarily “need” a narrative, and I don’t know that I hear that that much about any artist other than Taylor, unless the artists specifically talks about a narrative or concept for the album.

I guess I just see Lover as a very specific snapshot in time, and to me *that* is a narrative in itself. If Midnights is about the things that keep you up at night, I think Lover in a lot of ways is about the things you contemplate in quiet moments.

Or maybe more accurately, it’s a glimpse into a person on the precipice of a new beginning, and reflecting on some internal and external pressures that will impact that future.

The episode you thought would kill you, but somehow you survived and made it to this exact moment (IFTYE). The moment you realized you wanted something more— and so did your lover (Cruel Summer). Realizing you’ve made a home of your very own together, against all odds (Lover). Wondering why you’re climbing uphill even when you should already be at the top— and does the treadmill ever end (The Man). Worrying about if your past is going to prevent you from claiming your future (The Archer). Basking in the rush of new love (and lust) (ITHK). Fearing the future before you that’s out of your hands and grabbing onto the good to fight for it (Miss Americana). Being excited for what the future holds for you that’s so close you can taste it (Paper Rings). The moment that could have ended something special and instead led to you cementing your future (Cornelia Street). The fear of losing it all (DBATC). The sweet moments that make up a shared life that has become a shared future (London Boy). Confronting death and anticipatory grief that gives you the final push into adulthood, at war with the lost vestiges of your youth hanging onto childlike naivety (SYGB). Clinging to the one thing that grounds you when everything else seems to crumble around you (False God). Being fed up with others’ assumptions and reactions (YNTCD). Reconnecting after a troubling time and finding comfort in that (Afterglow). Recognizing that what you think is sometimes your biggest enemy (you) is also your biggest asset (you) (Me!). Quietly basking in the comfort of home and the future it represents (INTHAF). Overcoming your obstacles to find your peace (Daylight).

The undercurrent in all the songs is the tension between past and future, and the different ways that affects how you envision that future. There are pressures from other people, other circumstances, other hands life deals you, other places at war with the pressures from yourself and your past, all coalescing into the future before you.

To me, it’s an album about transitions in some ways too. The transition from youth to adulthood. From innocent to hardened. From scapegoat to hero in your own story. From trauma to healing. Which can be a chaotic, confusing and sorrowful time, but equally one of joy and excitement. The album as a whole just feels like it’s very much someone who’s about to move into a new chapter in their life, and they’re unleashing their diary about what brought them here in this specific moment in time they find themselves in, and the things that are ahead in their future. It’s about the people they want to be in it, the people they want to leave behind, and the people they’re scared they’re going to lose. It’s the prologue to “our coming of age has come and gone.” It’s heady stuff.

It’s not to say Lover is “perfect” or whatever. Yeah, there are a couple of songs I personally don’t reach for very much. But I love it as a project because it just FEELS like this very inflective period in Taylor’s life as an artist and a person.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for recent Taylor Swift “camper” references since it’s next up in the Barbie transportation sequence described in my post below. I think we got it!

In the I Can Do It With a Broken Heart music video, Taylor includes a shot of her wearing the pink fur coat from the You Need to Calm Down video. This coat obviously doesn’t appear in the Eras Tour or belong in their rehearsals, so it has to be an Easter egg. And of course, in the scene where she wears this coat, she happens to be walking away from a flaming camper van.

Honorable mention goes to the Chiefs’ camper ⛺️post during preseason. This one could be a coincidence, but who really knows.

And while we’re here, I’d be remiss not to point out the fact that her pose with the pink coat is in front of the Lavender Haze ladder/cloud prop, which has been largely speculated to be a reference to The Ladder, one of the first lesbian publications in the US.

Also worth pointing out, the camper scene in YNTCD includes 2 of my favorite references.

First, we see a blender going haywire while fire breaks out all around. Many have speculated that this is a reference to Chely Wright’s blender metaphor used to describe closeting in the music industry. Chely was actually interviewed about the music video right after it came out, which I don’t think was accidental.

Second, the video cuts to a frame on the camper wall that says, “Mom, I am a rich man” which is a quote from Cher in response to her mom saying she should settle down and marry a rich man. “I love men, I think men are the coolest, but you don’t really need them to live.”

All in all, lots of symbols packed into these references. Next up, snowmobiles? 🤔

Never been a swiftie but have been around her shit for years by vague associations w swifties and just pop culture and she used Lover/related activism in the era to rebrand and get back into mainstream while the Kim/Kanye stuff was still going on. Like yes reputation was mainstream but at the time ppl would still talk about her lying (and there were a lot of takes around her perceived antiblackness)

The only way she was able to scrub her reputation like that was w YNTCD, coming out as a democrat, those George Floyd tweets etc. if she hadn’t done all that I promise u no fans would care this much about Matty bc they just wouldn’t have higher expectations. She raised the bar for herself then complained ppl were bitching and moaning when she didn’t meet it.

Tbh I think it’s also a big part of gaylor takes went a little bigger following lover, she raked in a huge lgbt following w that album and when they saw she didn’t actually give a shit about them they went straight to saying she’s closeted/it’s not safe for her to speak up/as a queer artist she can do what she wants w this. like she’s the straightest woman alive they just needed an excuse why she used the community and doesn’t have to be a good ally anymore and her being gay is the only answer.

Also why I will never stand anyone who defends the 1930s lyric bc like girl - we all know you don’t mind racists, you don’t have to throw in a line about it in what is the most peak bit of performative activism I’ve ever seen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next couple of years we see her shifting away from appealing to the left and going back to centrism/alt right pop princess core tbh, like since she’s been w travis she’s not around POC like that anymore and I think marginalised fans are greeting close to jumping ship, keeping politics out/going conservative is her only route really.

yupppppp she should’ve never done the (performative) activist rebrand if she didn’t want to be held accountable for her actions later. like her fans would’ve been ok with stanning her without all the performative feminism and anti racist work because they continue to support her even after she dated that white supremacist! like she only did that whole rebrand to distance herself from the aryan goddess controversy and only did the rebrand to kickstart her marketing for the Lover album.

But I completely blame gaylors for thinking miss swift is gay like that one is completely on them. Well, since Taylor will turn 35 *before* the presidential inauguration in January 2025, she technically *is* eligible to become president from the 2024 election onwards.

I don't think that Taylor would be a good president, though, because while her attempts at activism in 2019 were well meaning, they weren't executed particularly well and since Taylor didn't even understand how to fill out the correct forms necessary to get a petition in front of the Senate, she clearly has less than half a clue how the bureaucracy of our politic system works.

Look though, this is what keeps her perpetually infantilized—“her attempts at activism were well meaning”…..she was a 30 year old woman!! She had the entire internet at her fingertips and endless streams of money if she wanted to hire someone to teach her about activism and how to begin participating in it *if* it was something she actually cared about

She spent the money and time on a 90 min documentary about finding her own voice and somehow still made it all about herself and her struggles vs the people she supposedly cared enough about to say “fuck trump” publicly
