AI generation may use less energy than photoshop on your computer, but that's because the images aren't generated on your computer. The statistics on water & power usage refer to the vast supercomputers/databanks that do the actual number-crunching, & do actually require that much energy, whether you think it "sounds real" or not.
As for becoming more efficient over time, that doesn't really hold true for large data processing centers, because of physics:
Electricity is a type of energy. When energy is transferred (e.g. through a circuit), some of it is lost as heat energy. The better the transfer mechanism (e.g. circuit), the less heat is lost, but it is impossible to eliminate this loss altogether. This is why electronics get hot.
When heat is already involved, the transfer becomes less efficient, because the existing heat makes it easier for more energy to convert itself into heat energy, rather than whatever energy its supposed to be being used as. The hotter it gets, the more heat is lost, slowing down the energy transfer more & more, until it eventually stops working. This is why overheating is the enemy of electronics.
Because you cannot stop electronics producing heat, & the more heat you have in one place, the more heat is produced, having a lot of electronics in one place produces a lot of heat very fast. The more electronics you have, the more heat is produced, the less efficient they become. It doesn't matter how efficient the individual electronics are, this still holds true. (Well, it does matter, in that they will still be more efficient than the same number of less efficient electronics, but the rule of "the more electronics you have in one place, the less efficient they will be", still holds true.)
As for the water "just passing through the system" or "evaporating",
a) does it pass repeatedly through the system? Once the water is heated (by doing its job as a cooling agent) it then needs to be cooled in turn. Rather than ending up with an infinite string of cooling systems, the most efficient way to do this would be to remove that water from the system (sending it to be reprocessed) & replacing it.
b) every time water is used for one purpose, it must be reprocessed before it can be used for another purpose. Yes, even if it evaporates & falls as rain (which is something we have no control over, & also means that the water that evaporates from one place & falls elsewhere as rain, must be piped/pumped back to the place it evaporated from/it is needed). When we are talking about water being wasted, we are acknowledging the fact that this processing requires time, labour, various chemical agents, & many other resources. No, technically the water itself isn't "wasted", since it still exists ~somewhere~, but the fact that we are unable to access it whilst it is being processed (or floating around in the atmosphere) means the net result is the same.
c) There aren't 16floz in the system. There are gallons & gallons of water in the system. (Gallons & gallons that cannot be used for drinking, bathing, watering crops, etc. Gallons that are not currently part of the water cycle.) 16floz (roughly half a litre) is how much is used Per AI image. That's a lot. (Especially as prompts often generate multiple images. If a single prompt produces 4 images, that's close to 2 litres. If you then decide to refine the prompt....)
(Bonus reason data centers need cooling: environmental factors. Such large centers need a lot of land, & wide, flat expanses of land are often found in deserts, i.e. hot places. Others are built in cities, on ready-cleared land, which are also places that generate a lot of heat.)
I don't think it would be challenging to make an image generator that "respects copyright" (you could train it on public domain art and photos but you could also license massive libraries of stock photos and TV shows and book/album covers etc. from the media companies that hold the rights to them) and I think the existence of such a generator would not lead people currently mad about AI to suddenly be cool with it because it's really not about copyright.

Chapter 2 - Abyss
Part 1
I hardly slept that night, for obvious reasons. The only thing running through my head was the note I had found. Trust no one… what an ominous message. I wonder who would’ve left that with me.
With the rising sun came Mumbo’s awakening, slowly but surely. I pretended I had been sleeping as well, slowly forcing myself to stand from my cramped position and stretch. The note crumpled in my hand, reminding me to store it away. Keep suspicions away for now.
But why was that note so… terrifying? It was words on paper, basically nothing, yet somehow it felt so much more sinister than just that. I dunno, I guess it bothered me. It felt like it should be a secret, something closely guarded.
I could feel Mumbo’s eyes on me, watching my thought process go down quickly, so in response I blinked up at him tiredly. “Hello Mumbo. How’d you sleep?”
He shrugged, not speaking right now. He looked about half-awake as he wandered to a chest, pulling out some eggs and pork. Those went into a furnace, laid overtop coals and left to cook up.
I glanced out the window at the sun rising over this small island, reflecting off the vast ocean right outside. It was blinding, the waves reflecting crystals of light into my eyes. I could see a boat in the distance, half-built and partially shrouded by early morning mist.
“Here,” Mumbo held out some of the eggs in my direction, a small smile on his face. “Breakfast.”
“Thanks.” I smiled back, taking the tray and devouring the food. I was much more hungry than first imagined… but then again, I can’t remember the last time I actually ate anything. Like, I could remember eating food obviously, but no actual meals.
As the last bites were taken care of, a small knock came from the floor entrance of the treehouse. Mumbo popped open the trapdoor with a foot, his plate still in his hands, and in came a new person.
She was honestly adorable. Dark brown hair with pure white ends, bright eyes the same shade as the oak bark to my left. Her pink and white cardigan went well with her white blouse and blue skirt, and her smile made me blush.
“Oh, hello!” She saw me, grinning. “Glad Iskall warned me you were awake. I’m StressMonster, but call me Stress.”
“Oh, uh… I’m Grian.” I waved a small bit, trying not to fumble too much. I turned down to the floor, kicking at it a small bit.
“And I’m chopped liver,” Mumbo helped Stress up the ladder and into the treehouse. Her wings were pure white, larger than you’d expect for a person her size, folded tightly to her back. She giggled, running a hand through her hair mindlessly.
“So it’s obvious that the few hours I took to actually sleep were when everything exciting happened. Glad to be of use.” I enjoyed her thick accent, the teasing lilt making us all smile.
“Stress-” Mumbo sighed, shaking his head. Stress giggled, winking his direction. “Whatever, is there any progress?”
“Sadly no. No exit Portals can be opened.” Stress shifted from left to right, seeming unable to stay still. Her smile became a little more forced, voice turning serious. “I have a daughter that I need to go see, I need to get out of here-”
“We know, Stress. Everyone has family out of Hermitcraft.” Mumbo pulled her into a hug, making me feel suddenly like I was… intruding, on a situation I knew nothing about. “I’m sure we’ll get out of here soon.”
“So from what I’m understanding,” I butted into the conversation, “The only way out of this place is blocked, and… no one can fix this?”
Stress and Mumbo shared a look, knowing something I didn’t. I pretended not to notice right away, letting Stress say something.
“For now, it’s… better that we let the Admins suss this one out. Speaking of which, X asked me to bring Grian over to his base for an Admin Scan.”
The slight brow crease of worry in Mumbo’s brow making me wonder what an Admin Scan exactly meant. “I thought X was going to come here and do that.”
“He was. Initially.” Stress shrugged a bit. “But now he’s needing Grian to be in his base to actually do the Scan. Something about closer to the Data Center?”
“Where is he holed up these days?”
“Some farms near the coast. He showed me around before I came here.”
Mumbo huffed, turning to dig in a chest. “I’ll take you there then. If something happens to Grian on the way there it’s on my head.”
“I’m right here,” I quietly protested, slightly cross at the way these two talked like I wasn’t here. Stress giggled, flashing me a grin.
“We know,” She opened the trapdoor to the ground, “That’s the problem.”
Before I could ask anything else, she had dropped. She launched into the air, wings spreading around herself gracefully. I watched in awe, before getting a nudge from behind me.
Mumbo was there, holding two pairs of wings. “Everyone gets an elytra this season. You wanted to fly?”
~~
Flying was so much easier than I could ever imagine.
We had started out at the very top of Mumbo’s treehouse, where I learned how to strap the wings to my body. As I connected the final strap, the wings morphed into a dark brown, reddish streaks at the very tips giving the impression of feathers.
Mumbo’s wings were black, specked with white like flecks of paint. They were long and wide, while mine were short and angled.
“Ready?” He smiled, holding a rocket in his hand. I glanced to the sky where Stress was lazily doing loops, blending in with the clouds in the infinite blue.
“Yeah. Just… jump and light, right?” I held the rocket in my hand as well, the pull-tab ready for release.
“Right,” Mumbo looked forward, determined, “One… two… three!”
We leapt off the tree at the same time, fumbling in nearly the same manner to unfold the wings. I pulled on the tab a bit before Mumbo, letting the rocket shoot me up into the sky.
Like it was natural, I pressed a button near my chest, and the elytra expanded behind me. I felt my ascent slow, angling forward into a glide easily. The breeze blowing on my face, the way the land below was so far yet steadily rising up… this all felt so…
Familiar.
I was laughing, doing loops carelessly. The air felt fresh, untouched, unchanged. I glanced down, gliding upside down, to see ^V^80 shaking 4!$ head at my antics.
“Grian!”
I gasped, realizing my fall had picked up, I was heading down headfirst to the ground. I fumbled for another rocket, but it was too late. I crashed into the ground hard, dust flying around -
- And I shot up in the middle of some small island. I sat in the middle of a beach, warm sand below my legs. The elytra that had been pinned to my back was gone, along with the note that had been in my pocket.
I panicked, checking everywhere on me for the note. Nothing. The note was gone, gone, gone-
“I knew you didn’t sleep last night!”
I jumped a solid meter in the air, turning rapidly to see the moustached man named Mumbo coming in for a landing. In one hand was the rocket he was using to fly, the other holding the back-to-grey elytra I had worn a moment ago.
“Uh… wh-what do you mean?” I grinned sheepishly, walking towards where he touched down in the sand. The elytra was thrust in my arms, and I was quick to strap it back on.
“You would have respawned in the treehouse if you had slept last night. It’s just how this works. Instead you popped up here.”
I shrugged, finishing attaching the elytra. “So what if I didn’t sleep? Does it matter?”
“Not currently, but give it a few nights.”
“What does that-” Before I could finish my question he had taken off, leaving me to fumble with another rocket and launch into the air.
I followed Mumbo’s lead back to his base, where Stress was pacing on top of the tree anxiously. Her eyes locked onto us as we came in for a landing, a relieved smile taking over her face when I stumbled forward.
“What the bloody hell was that?” Stress walked forward, fussing with my sweater. “One moment you were fine - better than any newbie has the right to be - the next you’re falling to the ground headfirst!”
“I…” I shrugged, pulling back from Stress quickly. “I don’t know. It was weird, I saw…”
What exactly did I see? It was like I was looking down at someone, but they weren’t there. Not really, at least.
“It was like… someone was there, but not.” I looked back up at the duo before me. “The ground was different, and I wasn’t flying down. I… I dunno.”
“Weird,” Mumbo glanced to the sky, where the sun was rising higher and higher. “I would love to chat more about that, but we should get to Xisuma’s base before he has a cow.”
“Right.” Stress flexed her wings, looking to the sky as well. “Follow me.”
~
...Xisuma’s ‘base’ was a bunch of farms with a mineshaft heading downwards. Xisuma himself was interesting. His bright green armor, clashing with a grey and purple helmet gave off the aura of mystery.
“It’s not much, just to get me started,” The man in question smiled sheepishly, leading us to a makeshift dirt-hut with a bed, “But it’s something.”
“I like it,” Stress grinned, “Quite quaint.”
“Thank you Stress for pretending.” He ruffled her hair as she puffed her cheeks out in a pout. I smiled as well, adoring their interaction. Mumbo had taken up a spot sitting nearby on a pile of logs, tinkering with some redstone to keep himself busy.
“Anyways, we should start now.” X gestured to his bed in the hut. “Lie down there before I black you out on your feet.”
Well that didn’t sound bad at all.
“How… exactly does this work?” I questioned, settling onto the bed. I stayed sitting up in the bed as he pulled a holographic panel out of nowhere.
X glanced at me curiously. “Well… everyone has Data. You know what Data is, right?”
“Mate, I know jack about jack.” The snap had me a bit surprised, worried that Xisuma was gonna take it as an insult, but he just laughed a bit.
“Right. Mumbo warned me about the memory stuff…” He sighed. “Well essentially everyone is made of their own Data, which Servers use to identify each person. It’s kind of complicated, but really important to our very existence.”
I nodded a bit. “So… how does that fit into the Scanny-thingy?”
“Well when I perform an Admin Scan, I can have access to your Data. Your Data contains everything about you. Memories, most importantly. By seeing your memories, I’ll maybe be able to figure out how you got here. So lie down, and we can get started.”
With a sigh, I flopped back onto the comfortable sheets. I couldn’t see what X was doing over me, but Stress squeezed my hand from nearby.
“I hope it all works out. I have some base stuff to get back to, but give me a ring if you need me.” She pulled her hand away, before leaving the small hut. The door clicked shut behind her, leaving X and myself alone in the darkness. I knew Mumbo was just outside, but that wasn’t quite as reassuring as I had hoped it would be.
His tablet thingy glowed a faint blue as he paced the small area. “Alright, we’re about ready to go. Close your eyes, and try not to resist this.”
“Resist?” I closed my eyes as requested. “What do you mean, resist?”
He didn’t answer. Well, he might have, if I didn’t suddenly fall through the ground. My eyes shot up as I fell, arms and legs flailing for any kind of purchase. I tried to spread my elytra, but found it missing, along with anything else I had been carrying on my person.
“Try not to resist this.”
Oh. He probably meant this. I took a shaky breath, doing my best to still my body. I was still falling, but I knew I wouldn’t crash. I took another deep breath.
Images appeared around me. I had my eyes closed, and within the blackness I could see movement, color coming to life. Somehow I knew this was all me, or parts of me.
Yet every time I tried to focus on one of the scenes floating around my body, it vanished. It was like grasping at straws, coming up with nothing.
A dull pain came from my back. It was like something was shifting, pushing, breaking free of my skin from underneath. I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t scream as the pain grew more and more.
The moment the pain grew too much, I jerked forward and out of the bed. My eyes were open, and breathing was still an issue through the pain. The stabbing, slicing ache slowly faded into nothing as I became more aware of the fact that I was awake.
“Grian.” X had been kneeling in front of me, hadn’t he? “What happened?”
“Back,” I managed to squeak out, another ripple of pain making me jerk, “Hurts.”
“Can I see?” Such a gentleman, asking for my consent amidst the agony. I could only nod a bit, wincing as his cool hands slid the back of my sweater up.
Or, tried to.
Something was trapped there, yanking on my back. I cried out, jerking away from X’s hands.
“Grian, I need to be able to see your back. I need to make sure it’s not a glitch or… something worse.”
A glitch? I had no idea what that meant, but if X was mentioning it it was probably bad. He slowly slid my sweater off, making sure it didn’t get caught on my back again.
Whatever had been there before was gone. Supposedly, I had faint scars right next to each of my shoulder blades, but otherwise there was nothing to suggest pain other than the phantom memories I had.
“And the Scan? Complete failure. I couldn’t glean anything from your Data before you started screaming… and I’d rather not hurt you again.”
“So… there’s no other way for you to figure out who I am, or why I’m here?” I could hear the disappointment in my voice, and I hated it.
“Sadly no. I wish I could do more.” He seemed frustrated, but also… somewhat excited. “I’ll figure it out soon enough, but for now I should get you back to Mumbo’s.”
I nodded, standing and following him out of the dirt hut. The pain was but a faint echo in my mind now, but it felt like foreshadowing. Something big was going on here… and I had no idea who was responsible.

ARK: Survival Evolved
I feel this review is more pertinent than ever due to the new DLC coming out a few days ago. I worry that I lot of people will see the DLC drop and decide to buy into the franchise because they want to ride cool mech suits. Let me give you a spoiler, that's not happening, at least not for a while. I've actually been sitting on this review for a long time but I've always put it off because ARK: Survival Evolved is one heck of a big game. Anyway, here goes. For the purposes of most of this review I'm going to ignore all the DLC but I will mention it in it's own section.
My time in ARK was mostly spent solo or with a singular friend I have. This is important to note because ARK is actually an MMORPG. Yeah, like World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2, this is a game designed around having a large open world with other players in it that remains constantly alive so that things are happening even when you're not around. I do recommend you play with a small tribe though because I personally find the online servers to be a waste of time. This game has been out for so long now that every server is covered in forts and settlements that cover vast swaths of the map. If you're looking to start out by yourself, at best, large walls prohibit your movement and block access to areas while simultaneously tanking your frames due to the HUNDREDS of dinosaurs stored within. At worst, these forts kill you on site with unmanned laser turrets from a distance equal to 20 times the range of your wooden spear. If you want to play online, start in your internet browser. Find a tribe's website, ask to join and if you convince them you can successfully skip playing the game. You'll now probably find yourself with end game gear, dinosaurs and weapons and you can now stop playing because you win the game. I'm getting ahead of myself, let's pretend you're not using the online maps. What is ARK? Well it markets itself as a survival game and at least in the beginning it is. You start by picking up rocks and punching trees to make tools to help you pick up rocks and bash trees more effectively. Each time you level up you get a skill point to put into one of your stats and some points to put into “buying” engrams (crafting schematics). Now that you've unlocked an engram, you'll probably want to craft it. As you work on crafting that, you'll probably level up again. This opens up more engrams. More engrams means more things for you to craft. This is a very effective feedback loop and will keep you busy for hours. One of the big reasons it'll keep you busy is that one of the items you'll end up crafting is a saddle. Saddles can be used to ride dinosaurs. Now, not all dinosaurs can be ridden but all dinosaurs can be tamed so each time you unlock the ability to make a saddle, you'll now have two jobs to do: Craft the saddle, tame the dino it goes on. This gives the game an almost pokemon feel as you knock out Dodo's and convince them to be your friend by feeding them berries. Dodo's are as useless as you might think but other animals are actually exceptionally helpful and will expedite your progression. An early example of this is the Parasaur. Parasaur's are herbivorous animals that will harmlessly roam around the starting areas of the island and once you've learned how to craft a club and a bolas, you can stun and club one until it's unconscious (the majority of dinosaurs are tamed by knocking them out and feeding them). With the parasaurs saddle, you can now ride it. It provides you with portable storage and although it's run speed is slower than yours, it can run for much, much longer. It also can harvest berries for you. En masse! It can also harvest thatch and wood from trees although it's not very efficient at doing so but it does all this without using up any tool durability or consuming your stamina. The usefulness only goes up from there with some dinosaurs being able to uproot entire forests in seconds and others able to crush rocks in a single swing, spewing out many more resources than you would have been able to mine by hand. It's safe to say that taming is a huge part of ARK and it's one of the more enjoyable parts.
The “crafting, taming, levelling up” loop will last you quite some time but survival games need more than just surviving to be good. Eventually you'll be asking what's next. Now, you will notice foreboding alien pillars rising high into the clouds all across the island and you might think that this is where you need to go and indeed going there is a challenge but arriving is not as rewarding as you want it to be. Here is where the game falls down in terms of conveyance. So far the game hasn't needed to spell things out to you. There is no tutorial message telling you to punch dodo's or to make a house. You just did those things because they made sense. Same as you went to investigate the pillars because it made sense to go see them. When you arrive though you'll receive no instructions. The console in the middle of the obelisk will cryptically mention something about a broodmother and a dragon and offer no explanation. You'll return to your house lost and in a daze. What is your purpose? Well, you need to go to the wikipedia for the game. Turns out you've just started the dungeon grind and nobody told you. This isn't bad in and of itself but I would have enjoyed some booming alien voice telling me to seek the dungeons out. Anyway yes, the game has dungeons (remember, it's an MMO) and you will need to be prepared for them. The majority of caves (caves = dungeons) on the island will result in your death the first time you go in them. Some of them are especially unfair like the poison cave which will, well, poison you. But it doesn't say this it just makes your health go down and again, it won't tell you why so you google it and find out you need a gas mask. An item I still haven't unlocked after 360 hours of play. With heavy dose of googling, the dungeons are a fine challenge. They provide you with the drive to escape your manufactured comfort zone that all survival games need. Still though, what's after that? When does the game end? Well after doing a few dungeons and some more googling you'll find that completion of the island involves defeating every dungeon multiple times in order to farm the artifacts needed to summon boss fights who's items are needed to open the dungeon of the final boss atop a volcano at the centre of the map. Again, none of this is spelled out or explained in-game.
So let's move right along into the first of the negatives about the game. The fact that it's designed to be an MMO. In an MMO, when you go to bed for the day or while you're at work, people in your tribe across the world are waking up and logging on for a session. It doesn't even matter what they do, the point is that they'll be progressing your tribe in some way. The game is balanced around the fact that multiple people, 24/7, will be working on these goals. It's just such a bizarre and disheartening change because up until this point you have felt like you're progressing at a normal rate. Imagine any other RPG you know, and then imagine that at what should be the halfway point of your progression, the game suddenly multiplies the amount of time it'll take for you to achieve your next goals. You will go from needing 50 metal to make an axe to 200 metal to make a gun and 1000 metal to make a more advanced gun. Once you complete a few dungeons and start eyeing a boss, the progression hits a ramp that's so steep it feels like a wall. You might log on and play for an hour and only make a dent in the task that's in front of you.
The other big problem with this game is how buggy it is. On the low end is predators being able to climb walls and cliffs that should be completely impassable. Also on the low end is how predators aren't smart enough to go around walls and cliffs that are completely impassable. On the high end, dying inside a cave will cause you to lose all your items permanently unless you know a very specific method for breaking the game. Skip this paragraph if you don't care for the example: I believe it has to do with the fact that the game will unload the cave once you die (because nobody is inside it) and since there is no more cave, your dead body will fall into the void below the kill plane. Even if you turn on the hax and noclip down to the void, the kill plane will respawn you above ground. You need to combine console commands to turn off the kill plane just to get your stuff, and now you'll fall forever if you don't teleport yourself above ground. Oh, but the ground doesn't exist for you anymore and you need to log out of the game and log back in just for physics to resume working again. All of this was because you died in one of the hardest parts of the game.
Alright, here's my bit about the DLC. The three paid maps are Scorched Earth, Aberration and Extinction. These are all fine additions. I haven't played extinction yet but both Scorched Earth and Aberration add many new engrams and entirely new worlds to explore. Aberration in particular has a whole new set of rules that you need to follow and I feel safe in saying, do not attempt to play these before putting a lot of hours into the island. Aberration will chew you up and spit you back out, again and again. It was kind enough to include a “starter” area but there's no water source in that area so... whoops? Scorched Earth would feel mostly normal if it weren't for the fact that you'll be dying of dehydration in seconds. Let me put it this way, I played Aberration with a new character and it was really hard and not entirely enjoyable for a long time. Do you remember everything that I mentioned above about dodo's, taming and a general sense of progression brought about naturally by the levelling system? Yeah that doesn't really apply in Aberration. The game asks you to have items you don't have yet constantly and if you do manage to get yourself set up you feel trapped because your safe space only goes so far and the area outside of that is so hostile that you feel you'll never be able to go out there. For Scorched Earth me and my friend tried something different. We ported our characters over from the island (this is a mechanic of the game. You can port dinosaurs over too) and thus while we still had no items we at least had enough stats to survive and the engrams to make the tools to survive. Even when I ported my character back across I could then start a new character to inherit all the equipment and the shelter my high level character had made and it made the game so much more enjoyable. In short, the DLC should be treated like an expansion pack. Something to do AFTER the island. This is why I mentioned that you shouldn't expect to play Extinction right away. Ideally, you'd want to have completely finished the island, Scorched Earth and Aberration before attempting Extinction but if you're impatient you'll still want to spend a few hours on the island to get some experience. One quick thing to mention, even if you don't buy the DLC, the game will install it for you in case another player does (remember, MMO). At least on my PC the game is now a whopping 150gb. Just something to keep in mind.
So why do people play ARK? I've been very negative in this review thus far and with 360 hours there must be some reason why I'm still going. I spoke about hitting that wall when you attempt to fight a boss but, up until that point the game is engrossing to no end. Everyone I've talked to who has played it has either given up very quickly or not wanted to stop playing for many hours. When you're not frustrated at a glitch the game is a joy to play. The sheer amount of different activities you'll be doing ensures that you'll never be bored. At any point in time, you could go mining, wood-chopping, hunting. What about fishing instead? How about heading off on an expedition to the next dungeon? What about trying to tame a particular dinosaur you once saw? Or maybe you want to set up an outpost in a strategic area so you'll have a safe place to go? Why not just go out exploring, try to find some encyclopedia pages left behind by survivors who were here long ago? Or you can head out to the ocean because you heard that there's a rare material that spawns there. So many possibilities await you. The world is a playground and you have your best mate and your pet dinosaur to take along with you. ARK has a retail price of $60 for just the base game which I think is a lot to ask for a game, even one with this much content. That said it's on sale right now (until 5th of Novement 2018) for $20 ($30 with DLC) so go buy it, that's an amazing price.

The Best Payment Gateway for Your ECommerce Site
There are so many decisions you have to make as a web designer and it can sometimes be a tricky balance trying to put all the right elements into place. When you add the ecommerce piece, it gets even more complicated.
According to this infographic by Subscriptionly.net, consumers have very high expectations for ecommerce websites. But if you design it right, there’s a lot of up money up for grabs:
We’re talking trillions of dollars in sales that ecommerce brings in every year. That’s why the decisions you make for your clients’ websites are so important.
Even as the future of ecommerce platforms introduces more advanced and intelligent ways to sell online, one thing will always remain the same:
The need for a strong, secure, and fast ecommerce payment gateway.
The following isn’t going to be your typical guide to learning about leading ecommerce payment gateways. You know which ones I’m talking about:
Stripe
PayPal
Amazon Pay
Braintree
Authorize.net
For the most part, they all do the same thing and provide just as secure and stable payment processing as one another.
Instead, this guide will show you what kinds of options you have to work with based on the ecommerce platforms you use to build websites.
The Best Payment Gateway for Your eCommerce Platform
Depending on which website builder solution you use, your choice of payment gateway may differ. So, in order to help you find the best ecommerce payment processing solution, I’m going to break this down based on ecommerce platforms and the options you have to choose from within each.
Let’s start by defining which are the leading ecommerce platforms. Based on market share data from BuiltWith, these are the most popular:
Let’s explore the payment gateway options for the three most common ecommerce platforms:
WooCommerce
WooCommerce is not a standalone solution like the others as it requires WordPress to function. Because of this, you’re going to have a vast number of third-party payment processor integrations to choose from.
WooCommerce, a plugin integration for WordPress itself, comes with a number of payment options upon setup:
As you can see, there are a number of in-person payment methods WooCommerce allows you to use as well as PayPal.
While PayPal is a reputable payment processing resource, this option doesn’t actually allow you to accept payments on your website. Instead, shoppers will be shuttled over to PayPal to make their payments. That might not be a bad thing, for a couple of reasons.
For one, if your client’s business is new, it would be beneficial to leverage the name of a company like PayPal. Rather than leave customers wondering whether it’s safe to shop there, PayPal’s recognizability can help instill trust at checkout.
Secondly, there’s server processing to consider, too. An ecommerce store is already quite sizable and will consume a bunch of bandwidth from your client’s web server. If you try to add a different payment gateway through a plugin to WooCommerce, you could potentially slow down the loading times of your site even further (which can be problematic in WordPress).
Plus, PayPal is a great option regardless of which ecommerce platform you use. Processing fees are low. You can accept credit cards and PayPal payments. It’s super fortified and comes with fraud protection. Plus, it accepts payments from dozens of countries and currencies.
Best Payment Gateway for WooCommerce: PayPal
If your clients are okay with payments being handled on PayPal’s site and servers, then your best bet is to go with the built-in option.
Shopify
Shopify is a hosted store builder solution that’s not only easy to use, but helps users build very impressive ecommerce websites in little time. If all your client needs is a store — and they’re not thinking about adding extra website features (like a daily blog, social media feeds, email marketing automation, etc.) — Shopify is a solid choice.
While you can add more “stuff” to a Shopify store, it’ll cost you. And the same goes for its payment gateway options.
When you first install Shopify, you’ll notice that your store is automatically equipped with the Shopify Payments payment gateway. Although it’s labeled as “Shopify”, this payment gateway is powered by Stripe, a leading payment gateway solution in its own right.
If your client is insistent on using a different payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, point this out to them:
In addition to paying the processing fees from the gateway of their choice, they’ll also get hit with an additional fee from Shopify. In some cases, this can effectively double what they have to pay just to accept orders through their Shopify store.
But there’s a lot of good that comes from using Shopify Payments. For instance:
Lower processing fees
Fraud protection
Automatic payment processing integration
Quick deposit of funds into your account (generally, a couple days)
A Stripe partnership backing the platform
Best Payment Gateway for Shopify: Shopify Payments / Stripe
Your best bet with Shopify is to use Shopify Payments. In all honesty, there’s no reason not to, unless your client is conducting business from a country the payment gateway doesn’t support.
You can find that information here.
Magento
Magento is the third most popular ecommerce platform. It also happens to be part of the Adobe Commerce and Experience Clouds, which makes it much more than an ecommerce platform. It’s an all-in-one ecommerce business solution where things like design, marketing, business management, CRM, analytics, and more collide.
For larger ecommerce clients, this is a great solution.
Now, because you’re going to be designing a premium shopping experience for a premium client, you really have to make sure you get the payment processing element right.
Out of the box, Magento gives you three payment processing options:
PayPal
Braintree
Authorize.Net
Unless your client’s customers are all in North America, you won’t want to use Braintree. It just doesn’t provide a global reach like the other two options do.
Here’s what it might look like if you were to use Magento’s PayPal integration:
PayPal may seem like the logical solution. It’s a recognizable payment processor. It gives you a number of options for accepting payments — on site or through the Payflow payment gateway on PayPal’s site. And processing fees are reasonable. In all honesty, though, it’s not really built for larger ecommerce shops.
According to this Fundera comparison between PayPal and Authorize.net, Authorize.net is clearly the best choice for clients that sell over $500,000 in goods.
Just keep in mind that your client’s business must be based in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, or Europe. Customers can pay for goods from all around the world, though, and use a large assortment of payment types — credit cards, digital payments like Apple Pay, e-checks, and more.
In addition, you get much more control over payment processing and security than you would with other payment gateways.
Best Payment Gateway for Magento: Authorize.net
Because of the nature of the Magento ecommerce platform, Authorize.net is the clear choice for thriving ecommerce businesses.
Wrap-Up
It might seem odd that I’m recommending you use the payment gateways that your ecommerce platform comes with out of the box when there are so many other options to choose from.
However, there’s a good reason why those gateways were hand-picked and integrated into your ecommerce platform. In addition to having the right kind of features, security, and performance, the deep integration with your store-building software will speed up your workflow.

What is cloud computing? Everything you need to know about the cloud, explained
Tumblr media
What is cloud computing, in simple terms? Cloud computing is the delivery of on-demand computing services -- from applications to storage and processing power -- typically over the internet and on a pay-as-you-go basis.   How does cloud computing work? Rather than owning their own computing infrastructure or data centers, companies can rent access to anything from applications to storage from a cloud service provider. One benefit of using cloud computing services is that firms can avoid the upfront cost and complexity of owning and maintaining their own IT infrastructure, and instead simply pay for what they use, when they use it. In turn, providers of cloud computing services can benefit from significant economies of scale by delivering the same services to a wide range of customers. What cloud computing services are available? Cloud computing services cover a vast range of options now, from the basics of storage, networking, and processing power through to natural language processing and artificial intelligence as well as standard office applications. Pretty much any service that doesn't require you to be physically close to the computer hardware that you are using can now be delivered via the cloud. What are examples of cloud computing? Cloud computing underpins a vast number of services. That includes consumer services like Gmail or the cloud back-up of the photos on your smartphone, though to the services which allow large enterprises to host all their data and run all of their applications in the cloud. Netflix relies on cloud computing services to run its its video streaming service and its other business systems too, and have a number of other organisations. Cloud computing is becoming the default option for many apps: software vendors are increasingly offering their applications as services over the internet rather than standalone products as they try to switch to a subscription model. However, there is a potential downside to cloud computing, in that it can also introduce new costs and new risks for companies using it. Why is it called cloud computing? A fundamental concept behind cloud computing is that the location of the service, and many of the details such as the hardware or operating system on which it is running, are largely irrelevant to the user. It's with this in mind that the metaphor of the cloud was borrowed from old telecoms network schematics, in which the public telephone network (and later the internet) was often represented as a cloud to denote that the just didn't matter - it was just a cloud of stuff. This is an over-simplification of course; for many customers location of their services and data remains a key issue. What is the history of cloud computing? Cloud computing as a term has been around since the early 2000s, but the concept of computing-as-a-service has been around for much, much longer -- as far back as the 1960s, when computer bureaus would allow companies to rent time on a mainframe, rather than have to buy one themselves. These 'time-sharing' services were largely overtaken by the rise of the PC which made owning a computer much more affordable, and then in turn by the rise of corporate data centers where companies would store vast amounts of data. But the concept of renting access to computing power has resurfaced again and again -- in the application service providers, utility computing, and grid computing of the late 1990s and early 2000s. This was followed by cloud computing, which really took hold with the emergence of software as a service and hyperscale cloud computing providers such as Amazon Web Services. How important is the cloud? Building the infrastructure to support cloud computing now accounts for more than a third of all IT spending worldwide, according to research from IDC. Meanwhile spending on traditional, in-house IT continues to slide as computing workloads continue to move to the cloud, whether that is public cloud services offered by vendors or private clouds built by enterprises themselves. 451 Research predicts that around one-third of enterprise IT spending will be on hosting and cloud services this year "indicating a growing reliance on external sources of infrastructure, application, management and security services". Analyst Gartner predicts that half of global enterprises using the cloud now will have gone all-in on it by 2021. According to Gartner, global spending on cloud services will reach $260bn this year up from $219.6bn. It's also growing at a faster rate than the analysts expected. But it's not entirely clear how much of that demand is coming from businesses that actually want to move to the cloud and how much is being created by vendors who now only offer cloud versions of their products (often because they are keen to move to away from selling one-off licences to selling potentially more lucrative and predictable cloud subscriptions).
Tumblr media
Predictions for cloud computing revenues to 2021 from 451 Research. Image: 451 Research   What is Infrastructure-as-a-Service?   Cloud computing can be broken down into three cloud computing models. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) refers to the fundamental building blocks of computing that can be rented: physical or virtual servers, storage and networking. This is attractive to companies that want to build applications from the very ground up and want to control nearly all the elements themselves, but it does require firms to have the technical skills to be able to orchestrate services at that level. Research by Oracle found that two thirds of IaaS users said using online infrastructure makes it easier to innovate, had cut their time to deploy new applications and services and had significantly cut on-going maintenance costs. However, half said IaaS isn't secure enough for most critical data. What is Platform-as-a-Service? Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is the next layer up -- as well as the underlying storage, networking, and virtual servers this will also include the tools and software that developers need to build applications on top of: that could include middleware, database management, operating systems, and development tools. Insight platforms as a service: What they are and why they matter What is Software-as-a-Service? Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is the delivery of applications-as-a-service, probably the version of cloud computing that most people are used to on a day-to-day basis. The underlying hardware and operating system is irrelevant to the end user, who will access the service via a web browser or app; it is often bought on a per-seat or per-user basis. According to researchers IDC SaaS is -- and will remain -- the dominant cloud computing model in the medium term, accounting for two-thirds of all public cloud spending in 2017, which will only drop slightly to just under 60 percent in 2021. SaaS spending is made up of applications and system infrastructure software, and IDC said that spending will be dominated by applications purchases, which will make up more than half of all public cloud spending through 2019. Customer relationship management (CRM) applications and enterprise resource management (ERM) applications will account for more than 60 percent of all cloud applications spending through to 2021. The variety of applications delivered via SaaS is huge, from CRM such as Salesforce through to Microsoft's Office 365. Cloud computing benefits The exact benefits will vary according to the type of cloud service being used but, fundamentally, using cloud services means companies not having to buy or maintain their own computing infrastructure. No more buying servers, updating applications or operating systems, or decommissioning and disposing of hardware or software when it is out of date, as it is all taken care of by the supplier. For commodity applications, such as email, it can make sense to switch to a cloud provider, rather than rely on in-house skills. A company that specializes in running and securing these services is likely to have better skills and more experienced staff than a small business could afford to hire, so cloud services may be able to deliver a more secure and efficient service to end users. Using cloud services means companies can move faster on projects and test out concepts without lengthy procurement and big upfront costs, because firms only pay for the resources they consume. This concept of business agility is often mentioned by cloud advocates as a key benefit. The ability to spin up new services without the time and effort associated with traditional IT procurement should mean that is easier to get going with new applications faster. And if a new application turns out to be a wildly popular the elastic nature of the cloud means it is easier to scale it up fast. For a company with an application that has big peaks in usage, for example that is only used at a particular time of the week or year, it may make financial sense to have it hosted in the cloud, rather than have dedicated hardware and software laying idle for much of the time. Moving to a cloud hosted application for services like email or CRM could remove a burden on internal IT staff, and if such applications don't generate much competitive advantage, there will be little other impact. Moving to a services model also moves spending from capex to opex, which may be useful for some companies. Cloud computing advantages and disadvantages Cloud computing is not necessarily cheaper than other forms of computing, just as renting is not always cheaper than buying in the long term. If an application has a regular and predictable requirement for computing services it may be more economical to provide that service in-house. Some companies may be reluctant to host sensitive data in a service that is also used by rivals. Moving to a SaaS application may also mean you are using the same applications as a rival, which may make it hard to create any competitive advantage if that application is core to your business. While it may be easy to start using a new cloud application, migrating existing data or apps to the cloud may be much more complicated and expensive. And it seems there is now something of a shortage in cloud skills with staff with DevOps and multi-cloud monitoring and management knowledge in particularly short supply. In one recent report a significant proportion of experienced cloud users said that they thought upfront migration costs ultimately outweigh the long-term savings created by IaaS. And of course, you can only access your applications if you have an internet connection. What is cloud computing adoption doing to IT budgets? Cloud computing tends to shift spending from capital expenditure (CapEx) to operating expenditure (OpEx) as companies buy computing as a service rather than in the form of physical servers. This may allow companies to avoid large increases in IT spending which would traditionally be seen with new projects; using the cloud to make room in the budget may be easier than going to the CFO and looking for more money. "CIOs are increasingly turning to cloud infrastructure and services in order to increase flexibility and relieve pressure on capital budgets," notes ZDNet's survey of IT budget predictions. Of course, this doesn't mean that cloud computing is always or necessarily cheaper that keeping applications in house; for applications with a predictable and stable demand for computing power may be cheaper (from a processing power point of view at least) to keep in-house.   via What is cloud computing? How to Create an Organizational Intranet (or Extranet) with WordPress
An intranet is a “closed-circuit internet”. It is available only at a certain location or via certain protocols. Some companies may have a network for their business that is only available while in their building. Or perhaps a college has a campus-wide network for faculty, but outside of that campus, it is inaccessible.
The difference in an intranet and the internet is that you are hosting the intranet yourself. Instead of being a distributed web of servers talking to each other via remote protocols, your network is localized and hosted on local servers in your own physical space. It’s basically a tiny internet that lives in your IT department’s office.
An extranet is not all that different. Instead of being housed on a local server, accessible only to those connected to the same network, an extranet is housed in the cloud and accessible only to folks within a certain IP range (or another factor you set). Mostly, an extranet serves folks on distributed teams because they can’t access a physical location.
Companies use intranets and extranets to facilitate private and secure mass data sharing and collaboration. Such as company wide access to internal documentation, announcements, time off calendars, and more. In this article we’ll cover why WordPress is a good fit for your intranet or extranet and then show you how to create one.
Let’s get to it!
Why Use WordPress for an Intranet or Extranet?
Well, the first reason is that it’s free. Obviously, you will have to spring for the server and bandwidth to host the thing, but if you’re looking at setting up an intranet in the first place, you likely have that covered already.
You will probably be using your intranet for some of this stuff:
storing private documents
posting various announcements and memos
hosting training manuals,
providing updates to policies
securely locking away any files that really shouldn’t be posted anywhere the public has even blocked access
keeping an updated company directory
maintaining a company calendar
allowing access to internal collaboration tools
setting up various project management environments
running an internal, private social network
and doing mostly anything you could do on the public web
Lucky for you, WordPress has all of that functionality built into the core. And with just a little bit of work, you can use it to do the exact same thing that expensive intranet platforms charge a lot for.
Most other platforms charge per user. That makes having an intranet potentially out of reach for a number of small businesses and non-profits. With WP, you don’t have to worry about that. Outside of normal IT costs, you’re going to be able to really spare your tech budget a big hit this way.
Setting up a WordPress Intranet
The first thing you need is a network. That may sound obvious, but you won’t get anywhere if your on-site machines don’t talk to each other. And the hub of any network is the server. After all, the internet is just a series of servers that talk to each other and to our browsers, so an intranet is the same. Only those servers are on-site.
Step 1: Pick a Local Server Platform
First thing’s first: you’re going to need a pretty good computer. If you think you can run an intranet on a last-generation, beat-up machine, think again. This is going to be a workhorse computer that’s left on pretty much all the time (or at least while people need the intranet during work hours). So you’re going to want something moderately beefy.
Once you have that picked out, it’s time to make it the center of attention. To do that, we just need to install WordPress. Simple, right? Actually, yeah.
You will want to use MAMP / LAMP / WAMP. MAMP, LAMP, and WAMP let you turn your Mac, Linux, or Windows (hence the M, L, and W in the names). There’s also a version called XAMPP that works on all three; however, it is a bit more advanced than the others and not quite as stable.
Note that if you do go with XAMPP yourself, do not download any version marked with a VM. You will want the versions listed above those. You’re not setting up a virtual machine. Instead, you’re putting together the real thing.
For this particular example, however, I will be using MAMP. The process on each platform is similar, and you can find it documented more fully here.
Additionally, you might be considering a local environment such as Local by Flywheel, and while it can work, we don’t suggest it. Any member of the AMP stack is designed for workhorse-level strain, and Local is not. You may have no trouble with it as a core platform for your intranet, but that’s not what it’s designed to do, unlike the AMP stack. So we suggest going with one of those.
Download and run the software, and you will have a couple of new additions to your Applications folder. We aren’t concerned with MAMP Pro right now, so go into the MAMP folder and launch the program.
MAMP is really simple to use. Just press the Start Servers button to start the servers.
Congrats, you have an up-and-running local development server. But…you don’t have WordPress installed, and you haven’t given access to the people on your network. But you will!
Step 3: Installing WordPress on Your Local Intranet
The first thing you need to do at this point is download WordPress. You will be doing a manual install this time, rather than using a quick installer. Honestly, there’s not a lot of difference.
You will get a file that’s likely called WordPress-4.9.8.zip (or whatever the current version is). Unzip it. Now, you have a folder simply titled “wordpress” on your computer. If you open it, you will see a file and directory structure identical to that of hosted online installations.
Now you want to find the MAMP folder in Applications and navigate until you find one named htdocs. That’s where your new installation of WordPress is going to live. Just drag the unzipped folder into htdocs. In fact, that’s where all of your local web files will be stored.
At this point, you will create the database that WP runs on. So head to the MAMP window and press the Open Start Webpage button.
Your browser will open to the default MAMP help page, and you will see a toolbar of menu items. Navigate to Tools and find the link that says phpMyAdmin in the dropdown.
When the new page loads, you see the real heart of your WordPress installation. The vast majority of your data will live here. Click on the Databases tab, and name your new DB under the Create Database heading. We chose et_intranet. Hit Create when ready.
The next page is scary. Ignore it. You haven’t created database tables yet because you haven’t set up WordPress yet. It’s okay.
Now, you are ready to go and get WP up and running. Start MAMP up if you haven’t already by pressing the Start Servers button.
Then navigate to either http://localhost:8888/wordpress or http://bit.ly/2QH6W7B to access your new installation. Keep in mind, also, that you can rename the folder called wordpress whatever you want. You then use whatever the folder is named in the URL. So if you rename the wordpress folder to intranet, it would be https:localhost:8888/intranet.
Whatever you name it, you will choose a language for the installation, and then you will see this screen.
If you have used quick installers before, this was generally handled for you. However, since this is a manual installation, it’s up to you to name the database and get it up and running. It’s very easy to do, and you’re not going to mess anything up. When you’re ready to start, press the Let’s Go button to be taken here.
Change Database Name to whatever you used in phpMyAdmin earlier when you created the DB. Use root for both username and password.
Keep in mind, also, that under Table Prefix, you absolutely 100% must include the underscore afterward. So if you change it from wp_, you will need to make sure it’s intranet_ or whatever you choose. When you press the Submit button, you will give a few confirmations and set up your WP username before being taken to your shiny, new WP admin panel.
One that’s running on your local machine.
Now, it’s time to get it set up for your team. And your team only.
Step 5: Providing Network Access to Your Intranet
Since the term localhost is actually what it says, the local host, only your machine can use that term. But the computer running MAMP has an IP address that anyone on the same network can access. You can find it in two different ways.
The first is going into your network settings and checking under the Connected heading.
The second way is via the command line. You can use the Terminal utility to do this. Simply enter ifconfig |grep inet and hit enter. Yes, that’s the special character for the vertical bar. Thank you OSX Daily for teaching us that command. You will find your computers IP address where it says inet.
Now, you want to make sure you have the right ports open for your team, so go into the MAMP preferences and see what they’re set at. By default, it’s 8888, and that’s okay to use as long as there aren’t other applications on this local server running on those ports. If that’s the case, press the button to use ports 80 and 3306.
With those two numbers in hand, anyone connected to the same network can connect to your new WordPress installation as long as the MAMP server is running simply by going to the IP:Port/wordpress, or 10.0.0.152:8888/wordpress for example. The IP and Port will always be separated by a colon.
And if you would prefer to use a domain instead of an IP address (because they’re a bit easier to remember than strings of numbers), you can do that, too. Siteground has a great walkthrough of using the hosts file to set it all up.
Need (or Want) a WordPress Extranet Instead?
A WordPress extranet works just like the installation above except it’s available only to a select number of people on a select number of machines. Because of the way that the .htaccess file works, you can still whitelist entire networks, while blocking all other traffic. So even if you have a distributed team, you can still physically limit logins.
Simply open up your site’s .htaccess file.
Then insert the following code and save/upload the file again. Make sure to add your own IP address to the file.
order deny, allow deny from all allow from 111.222.33.44
Just add any other IP addresses or IP ranges on additional lines, and you’ve restricted access to your extranet just like it were a WordPress intranet.
WordPress Intranet Plugins
Setting up the infrastructure of your WordPress intranet is only the beginning. Now that you have that up and running, you need to flesh out and customize the environment you’re providing for your company, campus, or team. WordPress has a lot of plugins that make it really easy for you to customize and get the exact intranet functionality you need.
All-In-One Intranet
Your intranet needs to stay your intranet. So this plugin makes sure that it does. It’s free, and it just works. You go into the settings, tell it how private you want the site to be, and within a few clicks, your intranet is locked down tight. Plus, there’s a premium version that works on WP Multisite installations and has even more options.
Price: Free | More Information
BuddyPress
BuddyPress is one of two essential plugins for a WP intranet, I think. Intranets are for teams, and that’s what BuddyPress is about. It’s a social network that you can control, and really, it’s a fantastic way of sharing and communicating between teammates. While there are other plugins out there that do similar things, why not go with the gold standard?
Price: Free | More Information
bbPress
Like BuddyPress, bbPress is pretty solidly entrenched in WordPress intranet functionality. While BuddyPress lets you communicate and collaborate, bbPress lets real group discussion occur on various projects through forums. Sure, message boards may not be the powerhouses of the internet like they once were, but discussion boards on an intranet are central to project management and making sure everyone is on the same page.
Price: Free | More Information
A Wiki or Knowledge Base
Creating a wiki using WordPress isn’t that hard. And in terms of tools for an intranet, a wiki is just about perfect. Easily searchable, linkable, and editable, every piece of information you could possibly ask for about anything your campus, company, or team deals with is just a couple clicks away. And because it’s an open-ended publication, you can all make additions and corrections so that the documentation you all need is always up to date. The same goes for a knowledge base, too. If you prefer a standard look-up-the-answer approach, WordPress has that, too.
Price: Free | More Information (Wiki)
Price: $40 | More Information (Knowledge Base)
Wrapping Up
If you are looking at a way to up productivity on your team, maybe this has convinced you that an intranet is worth giving a shot. At the very least, a private WP installation that works as an extranet might. Regardless, you’ve seen that it’s not hard to set up, and with just a little tweaking and customization, you can have it pixel-perfect for your team in no time. Whether you’re sharing docs, building teams, or trying to get feedback on upcoming projects, a WordPress intranet is a lot more efficient than email and potentially a lot cheaper than a huge Slack.
Have you used a WordPress intranet before? What was your experience?
