Suffix List So Far
Just a basic list of what I do have, what I am debating on adding (and the possible meanings), and what skills I want a suffix for.
This isn’t done and for sure more could be added onto it as time goes on
Confirmed
Rank Based
-star: Given to the leader of the Clan
-kit: given to every kit under the age of six moons in the Clan
-paw: given to every cat six moons and above until their Warrior or Medicine Cat Ceremony.
Skill Based
-claw: A warrior that has shown exceptional talent and skill in fighting
-fang: A warrior that has shown exceptional skill in both hunting and fighting. Possibly not enough to be named for either or, but notable for each skill
-foot: An exceptionally fast or quick paced warrior.
-leaf: A skilled Medicine Cat that shows an expertise in healing techniques and interpreting signs.
-leg: A cat that has shown exceptional climbing skills and expertise in navigating or hunting in trees.
-nose: A warrior who has shown exceptional skill and expertise in tracking
-stream: A warrior who has shown exceptional skill in swimming. This can possibly be attributed to fishing as well.
-tail: A warrior who has shown exceptional skill in agility and balance
-throat: A warrior who has shown skill in communication and speech
-whisker: A warrior who has shown expertise and skill in hunting.
Personality
-belly: a rather jovial or humorous cat
-cloud: a notably calm and soothing cat
-flower: a cat who has shown an interest and initiative in the care of the kits.
-heart: a cat who has a strong sense of belief in their ideals and morals
-pool: A notably intelligent or wise cat of the Clan (possibly rare)
-storm: a turbulent cat with an unpredictable nature
Appearance
This is for cats who don’t have a notable skill that they show an expertise for or a notable personality trait
-dapple: A cat with dappled markings
-face: A rather attractive cat by the Clan standards
-fur: Used for cats with long fur
-mottle: a cat with mottled markings
-patch: a cat with patched fur
-pelt: Used for cats with a short pelt
-speck(s/le): A cat with speckled markings
-spot(s): A cat with spotted markings
-stripe: A cat that is named after their striped markings.
Note- a cat that has a prefix that suggests tabby marking wouldn’t receive -stripe, nor would a cat that’s name suggests spotted markings receive -spot(s) as a suffix. And so on
Injury Suffixes
These suffixes are typically correlated with injuries that cats have survived from.
Note- cats are spoken with before name changes occur such as these. Some cats do want to be recognize or acknowledge they survived something other cats may have not. No one is forced either way
-eye: A cat with a missing, blinded, or in general damaged eye
-ear: a cat with notably damaged ears
-face: A cat with notable damage to their face (scarring for example)
-foot: A cat with notable damage to their foot such as being broken or even missing)
-fur: a cat with notably damaged fur or in general their body (? Maybe?)
-jaw: A cat with notable damage to their jaw
-pelt a cat with notable damage to their pelt or body
-tail: a cat with notable damage to their tail (missing, broken, etc).
Other Suffix
-step: paired with an animal, insect, or in general an animal prefix that can walk, this suffix is used when the cat with that suffix also matches the gait and temperament/personality of the animal in question.
Such as for example: A Swanstep would be a large white feline that may be a tad slower on land then water, with a notable temper perhaps, but they have a soft spot for kits within the Clan, and are notably protective of said kits as well.
Not the greatest example, but something like that.
Not Confirmed/Ideas
-flight, -splash, and maybe -fall
These would be paired with birds (or flying insects), fish and anything else that is mostly seen in water, and weather effects (maybe trees but idk may just stick to weather). But idk about this one! Since I got the idea from the Redux Iterum team and I don’t wanna just snatch their ideas too much (since the bulk of appearance suffixes I did take, I’m so sorry)
looking for suffixes skills
Suffix for a skilled tunneler
Suffix for cats who are skilled mentors (and show an interest in the teaching of apprentices in general)
Suffix for storytellers (or add it upon the -throat suffix perhaps)
If I use -leaf for just healing or as interpreting signs, then I’d like one for just the other one. So -leaf for healing and another suffix for interpreting signs. Or vice versa
Maybe a suffix for fishing if -stream could be just for swimming itself

-praetrixic
[-praetrixic]
Tumblr media
praetrixic is a suffix for genders related to paths or one's specific practice in witchcraft.
praetrxic comes from the latin word "paecantrix" (witch/witches) + the suffix "ic"
Tumblr media
i am specifically using this suffix for genders related to witch paths/types of witchcraft practices we made/make flags for over on @fantasy-store, but this suffix is generally for genders related to witchcraft practices and you may request a gender with this suffix if you'd like /info
there is no set flag currently.

I am 100% sure you must have answered this somewhere, but I just found someone who uploaded drow name prefix and suffixes from a DnD magazine from the 2000s and I was curious;
I'm sure people have asked what Aldriin's name means and I just can't find it, but I'm very interested whether Aldriin's name, as it currently is, is using male or female distinctions. Especially since according to the reddit post female drow may use male distinctions but male drow may NEVER use female distinctions.
I'm just curious because having a trans male drow is like the most galaxy brain concept in the history of forever so I am FASCINATED by how it ties back to drow society in smaller ways.
(I was looking at names because I never named my first tav who I love but I am awful with names ;__; )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aldiirn's name is comprised of the feminine prefix "aly-" meaning song (or legendary), and the masculine suffix "-diirn" meaning brother. Dropping the y and using a very masculine prefix gives him plausible deniability. It comes off as a nonsense prefix in passing since would a half-drow really be worth more than a random monosyllable?
Safe to say that despite being soooo much happier as a guy, and identifying strongly as one, he's got a little attachment to being femme. A fully masc name would be Keldiirn and fully femme Alydiirna.
There's a whole bunch of trans masc and non binary drow OCs out there! It really is a fun concept to bite into and deal with this rigid, violent society in a safe little container and also with Lolth being comically evil. I think Ed Greenwood posted that Lolth would accept trans women but trans men would be frowned upon, but the posts are very recent. I run with the previous assumptions that lolth-sworn drow keep very strict gender roles and stepping outside your assigned gender could get you the stab stab, just like having the wrong hairstyle.
That list of drow names is SUCH a lifesaver lol. I used it for Aldiirn's courier idol, "Mal" Amallochar (divine + messenger), though Mal's now half drow too so that full name might change. Aldiirn's mates, Caelryn and Zahne, are just nonsense names tho since Cally was raised by gnomes and Zahne is staunchly "my gender is none do not refer to me."

heyyo, sorry if it's a bother but I remember you mentioning somewhere (in the tags of something?) that hungarian might even have more than 18 cases if we count it a different way and I lost that post but I'm still very curious, could you tell me more about this or point me to a source? I love terrorising international friends with the hungarian case system
It's NEVER a bother to talk about linguistics :DD This is gonna be a bit long tho.
The reason for this is that Hungarian has like a million suffixes and not all of them are created equal. So there is a bit of debate over what, exactly, constitues as a "case" here.
The currently accepted safe list of the 18 Hungarian suffixes that are definitely totally cases looks like this:
Tumblr media
This is already hilarious, because you, as a native speaker, have no idea what these terms mean, and also because there is nothing at essive-modal in this example. Because we just do not decline the word jég in that case.
(Essive-modal is the -ul in "jutalmul" and "[beszélek] magyarul" btw. Is 'jegekül' a word that exists and makes sense? Discuss.)
These are the "bare minimum" of cases that fit both of the two (currently accepted) rules that 1) a case can be a compulsory argument of a verb (aka you can have a verb that you have to use a specific case with, like "beléptem a házba") and 2) only cases can follow other suffixes (I actually can't think of an example for this rn lol).
Thinking about it, you might even get by with saying we have 17 cases in a pinch, since essive-modal is such a weirdo and useless for like most nouns. Don't quote me on this one though.
Anyways, if you're a bit more daring, you can look at all the other suffixes and say "well, why can't these be cases too?" Like come on, this is missing genitive. Why is it missing genitive? So you put in genitive (embernek). And if that's in, then why can't the others be there too? Which is how you end up with off-the-wall cases like temporal (ötkor), sociative (kutyástul), locative (Győrött), distributive-temporal (hetente), and so on until you reach like 34, or however many suffixes there are. Every suffix can be given a fancy overly specific case name to horrify poor non-Hungarian speakers.
Wait, did I say the bare minimum was 18(-17) cases? Actually no, the bare minimum is ZERO cases. Because you can take the enlightened opinion that "case" as a concept should not be applied to agglutinative languages like Hungarian, and Hungarian cases are actually better understood as postpositions affixed to a noun. (Funnily, this is actually how some of those suffixes became suffixes. Ex: hodu utu rea -> hadi útra.)
So, there you have it. The number of cases in Hungarian is a number between 0 and 35. But probably 18. Unless it's not.

Hi, out of curiosity, do you have a list of prefixes and suffixes that you use to name characters in this au/rewrite? I'm just curious bc you clearly do a lot of research and I'm interested in just what all you'd put
I think I tried to start a google spreadsheet of prefixes and suffixes months ago, but I actually have an obscure brain quirk called ADHD, which stands for A Dude & His Distractions. I'm on 20 mg of being put in a washing machine (high spin cycle) a day.
But, it would just be for other people really. When I get the chance to name cats outright, I have a big mental list of names I already totally want to use, or think about the family they're part of and how their parents would name them. Like, I'll try to make it match their siblings, think about what sort of names their family typically uses, or use prefixes that canon hasn't used but I would.
Like, a Truckkit would be pretty fun for SkyClan. Gas in reference to marsh gas, Vetch or Teasel because they're some of my favorite plant names, I love "weird but ecologically valid" ones like Jelly, Cinnabar, Plantain, which describe something TOTALLY DIFFERENT from what you think those should mean.
(jelly = jelly ear mushroom, cinnabar = type of moth, plantain = type of grass)
So... all that to say, unfortunately I do not have a list. At least, not one that's physical. The closest you're gonna get for now is the Clanmew lexicon.

Note
Hi there! Idk if this will be something discussed in the server after applications are accepted, but does SummitClan have a naming system they follow? Any names considered taboo? Always interested in little tidbits like that when brainstorming possible characters :DD
EYES WIDE OPEN ...
Yes, Summitclan follows something I've gotten used to calling "post-traditionalism". Essentially, it follows the rules of traditional naming, but is designed to be living & flexible. Prefixes go in and out of style, suffixes might get modified, replaced or simply go extinct due to leader preferences and historical acts, etc.! So rather than being a single solid thing that has always existed, every character has ancestors with suffixes that no longer exist & prefixes that have connotations that have been lost.
BUT overall, prefixes are nature-based (exclusively things found in the Adirondacks) reflecting overall coat color & suffixes are honor-based and rooted in personality and skill. Some prefixes might sound nontraditional, but that's mainly bc the aim is to create a color connotation. For example, lichens can be all sorts of colors, but Summitclan heavily associates them with gray. Ditto to mullein, which is literally green, but Summitclan also associates mullein with gray.
For taboo names, there are a few... for prefixes:
Sun
Moon
Star
Spirit
Mid/night
+ all of these are actively disallowed socially. as in, it's not illegal to name your kid that, but all of these are considered sacred & it's sacreligious to name a kid that. Arrowseeker will just straight change your kid's name cus she's personally that serious about it. If someone tried to name their kitten Moon- she'd have a cardiac event. (That doesn't mean the next leader will be the same though!!)
and for taboo suffixes:
things ending with -er (<- such are reserved for the highest of honors and the deepest of formative experiences, much like a Tail Name in Tailchaser's Song)
anything negative or shameful
anything associated with injury, manure, death or rot
+ there is a set list of suffixes. the admin/leader assigns suffixes, and the addition of a new suffix is extremely rare. More common is a suffix's meaning being assigned to a new word following a controversial figure that will be associated with the old suffix, but even that is still uncommon!
To top it off, here's my top 5 favorite prefixes & suffixes:
Arrow- (obviously)
Ink-
Porcupine-
Purslane-
Dill-
-song (storytelling)
-spring (silliness)
-pool (diplomacy)
-minder (faithful kindness)
-twine (artistry)

every day I think about the time I had to be diagnosed with the Transgenderism Disorder, in order to get a written permission to legally change my name to a gender neutral one (you cannot have a gendered name change unless you are medically sterilized first), and the doctor made me take an IQ test 😭 what if I fucking failed lmao "diagnosis: too fucking stupid to be trans, kill it immediately"

I need a name of a toing cat that had the potential to be the future leader of a clan (Amy clan) but was killed before he could even become a deputy. I'm working on something and can't think of a name
Stonetail, or Spottedheart, or if you want something a bit more catch, Moonblaze or Mintdawn?

What's your suffix list for your WCAU?
Oh lord I didn’t see this till now, I’m so sorry!
But basic idea is to use the @ailuronymy suffix list, but to expand upon it.
Such as using -belly for a jovial cat, -throat for a well spoken cat (or charismatic?), -pool for a notable intelligent cat (typically rare for the cats) and so on. Maybe even -brook, -tooth, or -poppy, but I’d probably use that for an alternative to -stream, -fang and -flower unless I can maybe find a way to use them otherwise.
Like maybe a -poppy cat is more interested in the rearing and tending to their own kits? Or perhaps they are ones who are more interested in teaching apprentices? Or maybe even another option is they’re knowledgable in burial customs since poppies are apparently a symbol for soldiers who passed away in war. Just some ideas for that specific suffix
Of course some will be added in to fleshen things out. Especially since we got the tunnelers in WindClan and now SkyClan.
But for now the ones mentioned above (-belly, -throat, and -pool) are confirmed for personality/skill suffixes. I am of course adding -patch, -speck(s/le), -spot(s), -dapple, and other pattern suffixes cause some of them are cute and tbh I’m attached to the name Leafdapple. And maybe gonna try and find a use for -brook, -tooth, and -poppy, and see about finding some more suffixes for others things to use for the AU at hand
