After listening to Sufjan Stevens’ new album multiple times I can’t think of anything other than he must be the strongest man alive. The depth of his emotions he put in this new album for his partner is astounding and he did this to share with the public his grief and I can’t imagine sharing your soul like that. His love fills every song and it’s so heartbreaking that it’s beautiful.

speaking of musicals. ive been rotting and obsessing over illinoise recently. its based on the sufjan stevens album and theres no dialogue only dance and. i think it was made for me. highly reccomend checking out the few performances on youtube / listening to the cast recording / reading the synopsis on wikipedia !!

Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens is so Amylex coded it hurts.

just think about it, the opening line is "The evil it spread like a fever ahead" which of course is the operator sickness spreading from Alex to Amy via the camera

"And I'm sorry I left, but it was for the best

Though it never felt right" could be seen as his guilt about killing her or worse, letting her face the operator alone

now my personal head canons for how she died are quite better sweet, I think Alex tried to do everything he could to make her passing as peaceful and painless as he could (sedating her to the point of her heart stopping)

and there's a full verse that could so easily be interpreted as Alex talking to Amy after she died that fits with that head canon

"The hospital asked should the body be cast

and you can't forget how the song ends

I’ve decided to cope with my feelings by being so normal about Mystery of Love and listening to it on repeat a large amount of times. I don’t care how many times I’ve heard it, it’s literally the most song of all time. It’s so beautiful and the melody makes me remember sitting on the hills in Rome overlooking the temple of Mars and Venus. The lyrics are the perfect level of love and gut wrenching longing. I also feel the same with Gilgamesh, My Rajneesh and John My Beloved but Mystery of Love just hits. It’s like Lana’s Summertime Sadness

“Now my riverbed has dried. Shall I find no other?” Will hit every time and the gentle strumming behind the hook 😭
