Not sure if I requested this before since it's been a while since my last request. But in case I haven't...
Summer is actually an Earthling who got Isekai'd to Remnant.
(You may avoid the usual Isekai tropes if you wish)
(I have a few tropes I'm going to avoid with this)
Summer sighed as she stared up at the sky, trying to make sense of everything that was going on around her. The shattered moon still seemed strange to her even after these last three weeks, and the training was far different from anything she was used to. Aura, dust, semblances… it was all still hard for her to get a grip on. Though, if this is what it took to finally be a hero…
“Alright, time to get up,” Qrow said as he walked over to Summer. “You need to work on your aura control again.”
Summer got up and stretched, her arms still sore from swinging her axe around. “You know I’m not getting any better with it.”
“Because you’ve only been trying for a week.”
“But I should be getting better at it!”
“This stuff takes time. Now close your eyes and try to focus.”
Summer rolled her eyes and found a spot to sit down as she closed her eyes as she tried to focus like Qrow had taught her. She tried to picture home, her small town back on Earth. The smell of the bakery down the street, the sounds of the cars that drove down the road, the crack of thunder overhead just before a flash of silver light blinded her. “I’m not feeling anything.”
Qrow put a hand on her shoulder. “You just need to focus. Your aura is an extension of your soul, of who you are. A shield that will keep you safe-”
“And the only thing that will prove that you are strong enough to belong here,” Raven interrupted. “If you can’t manage your aura then why are you here?”
“If I knew why I was here, then I’d be able to do this.” Summer opened her eyes and looked up at Raven. “All I want to do is find a way home-”
“Then go home.” Raven folded her arms and glared at Summer. “Because right now, all I see is someone who has no idea what they’re doing and cheated their way into Beacon in some vain attempt to be a hero. If you cant handle something as simple as aura, then you dont belong here.”
Summer sighed as she watched Raven walk off, slowly reaching for her weapon to try to find some sort of comfort. It wasnt as if she hadnt been trying, after all, she had been doing everything she could to catch up after Professor Ozpin found her and gave her a place to be. He promised to help find a way home, promised to give her shelter and a place to be in the meantime, as long as she promised to train to be a huntress.
“Dont listen to her,” Qrow said as he pulled his hand away. “We havent had the easiest life living outside of kingdom walls, so its easy to say someone doesnt belong if they cant keep themselves safe.”
“Still doest hurt any less.” Summer stood up and started to make her way to Ozpin’s office. No matter how much practice she had, she still felt lost and out of place training to be a hero. Grimm were nothing like the monsters she used to read about, dust was a complete mystery still, aura and semblances sounded like super powers and she still had no idea how to activate either without some sort of help, and then there was whatever she did to the grimm that tried to attack her when she first came to Remnant. The way it turned into a statue when she tried to defend herself… it was all becoming too much.
Still, she slowly entered the elevator in the Beacon tower and rode the elevator up to the top floor. She leaned against the wall of the elevator, tapping a foot as she rode impatiently. As the elevator came to a stop, Summer took a breath and stepped over to the door as it opened. “Professor Ozpin, I… I need to talk to you.”
Ozpin looked up from his desk and took a sip of his coco. “Summer, I wasnt expecting you until tomorrow.”
“I know, but… its about this whole being a huntress thing.” Summer walked over to Ozpin and sat her weapon down onto his desk. “I… I cant…do this. I quit.”
“You… quit?”
“I’m not cut out for this. I cant use aura, still have no idea what my semblance is, and I still dont have a grip of anything that is going on here.” Summer sat down and looked down at the weapon in front of her. “I’m not some hero, I’m… I’m just a nobody that’s supposed to go to work.”
Ozpin nodded and sat his mug down. “Then what do you plan to do now?”
“I… I dont… know. I’ll go home-”
“And how will you get home?”
“I-” Summer sighed and shook head. She had no plan on how to get home, she still had no idea how she got here in the first place. “I dont know.”
“Getting you home isnt going to be as easy as snapping my fingers.” Ozpin pushed Summer’s weapon back to her with a smile. “Until then, I want you to be here to learn how to fight grimm and to use aura to protect yourself.”
“But why? Why be a huntress instead of… finding me somewhere else to work?”
“I saw what you did to that grimm.”
“What I… did…” Summer went quiet as her words trailed off, thinking back to the ursa that had tried to attack her in the forest and the bright light that flashed before it turned into a statue. She caught her reflection in her axe, her silver eyes flashing a bit. “But I didnt do anything. I was almost killed and I… you really think I did, didnt you?”
“Silver eyes are a rare trait and those born with them are able to defeat grimm with a glance.” Ozpin dug through his desk and pulled out a small journal, sliding it to Summer. “All I want to do is help you learn how to defend yourself in case anything happens.”
Summer picked up the journal and flipped through a few pages before closing it. “And if I dont?”
“Do you know anything else you can do?”
“Well… no…”
“Then we’ll continue your training to be a huntress until we can get you home.” Ozpin moved a few papers around on his desk. “Since you are struggling with using your aura, I’m going to assign you mandatory training after class. Once you are able to use aura on your own, we’ll work on your semblance. Now, you should get back to your team.”
“Yes sir.” Summer picked up her weapon and went back to the elevator. Once the door closed and the elevator started to go down, she looked at her reflection in her scroll, focusing on her eyes. “I just have to play along until he can get me home. This could be worse.”
I’m so glad I read the orv novel. Sure it ruined my life even more but with how much the webtoon gets praised, it’s so hilarious when you find out everything before the dkos arc was set-up.
Webtoon onlys spent 3 and half years hyping up the intro.
Sorry I'm late on this - I'm going back to school for a second degree this fall so it's been chaos
Lots to look forward to for this season!!
Oshi No Ko - Season 2
Such a killer series that I think a lot of people have been looking forward to the second season. They did a great job giving us something to look forward to in the story.
Must Watch
Noteworthy On-Going Shows:
Tensura - Season 3
MHA - Season 7
New Seasons:
Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest
This series was one of my first "longer" shows and I still love the original series. I know it really fell off with the 2014 reboot and the ecchi scenes were ramped up but I think 100 Year Quest gives it a nice fresh start now that people kind of know what to expect.
Additional New Seasons:
Kimi ni Todoke: Season 3
A romance drama that my friend has tried to get me to watch for over a decade now.
Tower of God - Season 2
I never finished season 1, but I've heard that this series is supposed to be highly reviewed and anticipated. Will go back and watch season 1 to catch up.
Shy - Season 2
After letting this series sit for a minute, I'm not entirely sure I'll go back and watch the second season. I think there's definitely an audience for it, but I've got my list full of other priority shows at the moment.
New Noteworthy Shows:
There's lots here for everyone this season.
Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction
This is a big one I didn't realize was getting an anime adaptation. This is one of the highest rated manga series, I'd say of all time. I'm hyped to watch it.
Done by a new studio called Production +h, the style looks perfect.
The Elusive Samurai
This is a fairly new shonen jump series that has gained a lot of traction in the manga community. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but I've heard good things.
Rick and Morty (Anime)
I have so many mixed feelings about this one.
I love Rick and Morty but man, and I don't know if I want see them in Japanese/Anime since it's literally already an animations series - but then I realized, because it's produced by the same studio this could be a legitimate "version" of the series that's just a part of the canon Rick and Morty Universe which is kind of cool.
Will just have to wait and see I guess.
Suicide Squad Isekai
I'm completely on board with this one for some reason.
Really not sure why, but it makes perfect sense to me.
Honestly pretty stoked to watch it. (+ it's by studio WIT)
Wistoria: Wand and Sword
A kid enters magic school, although he can't use magic, he's particularly good with a sword. Almost like if Mashle were more serious and less out there?
Read the first few chapters of the manga and enjoyed it quite a bit.
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies
I think this looks really cute, will give it a few episodes. (Also because it's done by studio bones)
Senpai is an Otokonoko
A story about a highschool boy who cross-dresses, friendships between him, another female classmate and his childhood friend who's very protective of him.
I'm curious to see how the story progresses and what kind of representation will actually be show-cased in the series.
(Looks wholesome)
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines
Amazingly animated slice of life of a group of girls who get rejected by the guys they like. (A1 Pictures)
Plus-Sized Elf
An elf that came to the human realm falls in love with junk food and now needs help and motivation to lost it. Ecchi series that I saw in manga format a few years ago that I wasn't really expecting to see an animated version for.
Mayonaka Punch
Has a super unique style that I'm interested to see if the story is actually worth watching at all.
Delico's Nursery
Same style as Mars Red - group of Vampires taking care of kids and murder mystery solving on the side.
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin - Anime
Anime adaptation of the game, animations and character design look great.
Lots to check out this season, seems like a good bunch that are actually worth watching too.
Enjoy!!
Gave in and made a first pass at a Ride Kamens oc. I blame @missmako-chan :P
Their current name is Niko but it's just a placeholder (to match with Mako's Ichiko, they're friends). They moved to Nijigao to study, so they currently reside in the educational district. At the Café they mainly take care of pastries and other snacks.
The first outfit is their casual outfit; the second outfit is gonna get changed when we have a canon uniform for Camouflage, the mask is my headcanon that people use masks when visiting the Café (I also just think masks are neat)
No Longer Allowed in Another World - Sexy goth man dislikes isekai stories
This show is good fun so far. It uses its odd MC to satirize the cheap empowerment fantasy aspect of a lot of isekai stories. I'm not expecting a lot of depth, but its nice to have some clear themes.
If suicide jokes aren't your thing absolutely skip it. A lot of the humor comes from how over-the-top dour the MC is. For me, him crushing sleeping pills between his teeth has not stopped being funny.
The Suicide Squad from DC Comics meets isekai….as both a (former) DC Comics nerd and an anime fan, I’ve been training my whole life for this.
So…was this series good? I wouldn’t call it that. Was it accurate to it’s source material? Nope. No way in hell. Was it still pretty fun to watch? Yeah, it mostly is!
This is a series that embraces how goofy it is. Not all the humor hits, but much of it is at least endearing. It’s an anime about watching a bunch of assholes cause chaos and fail hard, and it shines at doing that.
Probably the character I’m most disappointed with, despite the fact she gets the most screentime and is clearly the main character, is Harley. It’s easy to tell this anime started production with only the first Suicide Squad to go off of, because Harley and the Joker’s relationship is framed as positive and not abusive at all. Also, hilariously, the Joker is now full bishonen with a seductive voice and Hot Topic aesthetic.
Rather the chaotic, cheerfully murderous, and full of uncontrollable rage guy from the comics, he’s like, a pretty laid back mall goth and talks a lot about how the world is filthy (dude since when do you care).
He also doesn’t mention Batman once, which might be a copyright thing but adds to it all. He's less like the Joker and more like one of the many Joker-alike characters in anime: Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter, that guy from Metallic Rouge, the way he’s played seems so familiar.
Making the relationship with Harley healthy actually flattens her a lot as a character. Now she really was saved from her dull life by a man, her obsession with him is just annoying rather than sad, and she isn’t struggling with anything. There’s no conflict withing her. What really doesn’t help is the show frames her as “SUPER EMPOWERED” and the empowering thing is that a man showed her how to “be herself” (aka be just like him) and now she can’t go five minutes without talking about him, and she gets almost every creative thought and good idea she has from him…girl power, y’all!
On the other hand, she is incredibly fun to watch, with her boldness, her love of violence, and carefree attitude. It’s cute to watch her slowly form friendships with the team (and always adorable how Harley forms a friendship with King Shark in every continuity. She calls him Nana-chan!) She does things like randomly adopt a dragon and team up with orcs. She has a wonderful moment when attacked with mind control. She’s a character I like outside the stuff with the Joker, even if she isn’t really Harley.
And speaking of female characters done dirty, Amanda Waller does a lot of bad things, but I really can’t picture her getting behind colonizing another world and taking their resources. Yet here we are. She also has very little screentime in this, despite being so famously prominent in the end credits.
All the other members of the Squad basically have one trait we return to again and again, but the one trait is usually pretty fun (except for Peacemaker, who’s one thing is mentioning PEACE and AMERICA and boy does it get old), their team dynamic is fun and boy are they causing carnage. Again, they lack the depth of their comic counterparts and just kind of feel like their own thing, but while they’re shallow as hell, that doesn’t make them boring. Especially when the commit so much bombastic animated violence. The show has a ton of fun with its fight animation, and the effort really shows.
The isekai world is fairly generic, which seems to be part of the point, and the plot is paper thin, and this includes a villain who’s introduced late in the story, with no explanation of where she came from, why she’s doing what she’s doing and one of the dumbest designs I’ve ever seen...and the whole climax is built around her. It then pulls off a plot twist so brazenly nonsensical that is wraps around to being kind of impressive in its ridiculousness.
There is an effort made at character development in one respect- there's this whole character arc with the Generic Isekai Princess where Harley inspires her to speak up for herself and she decides to become as much like Harley as she can. Soooo I think this show really does think “empowering yourself” is actually copying another person and trying to become them, but hey, at least that other person is a woman this time. And there were a couple shippy moments with her and Harley, so that’s something.
(oh and on the topic of unfortunate implications, at one point Clayface makes fun of Deadshot's short dreads, saying his hair looks like "broccoli" and I have no idea why anybody let that through, especially on the DC side).
But at the end of they day, the one thing I wanted to happen--everyone getting magical girl transformation sequences--did in fact happen and it was great, so I can’t complain.
So yeah, this is a fine show to watch if you want a shallow, utterly brainless good time. It’s here to be goofy and action packed and nothing else. But if you really need these characters to resemble the comic characters, it’s not gonna be for you.
This was definitely one of the finales of all time.. seems like WIT saved all their juice in the episode for the last 10 minutes or so after a lacklustre start. Tale of two halves really. First half looked like the subpar animation and production values we saw in eps 3-5 and the big climax battle looked like last week’s sakugafest. Overall, really liked the show despite its flaws. I love DC so you mix that with anime and at a minimum I’m going to have fun.
I feel like half the budget for the episode went to Harley and the gang’s Mahou Shoujo transformations lmao that was so damn random but awesome! The fight scene that followed was dope and I’m glad we got to see enchantress in action, wish we’d got more of her in this
It’s fitting that the princess takes out the demon lord since she was masquerading as her mom all these years. She really looked bad ass using the legendary sword and this kingdom is definitely in good hands. Love the scene of Harley blasting the demon lord head into the stratosphere lmao.
Those last 3 minutes were something though. The princess getting all excited because her idol Harley finally recognised her and even gave her a nickname was so cute she’s adorable! I hope she and her knight get a nice ending one day. But wtf, Joker being behind everything is such an odd twist considering how he was being set up as such a positive figure in this story. Never seen a Joker story where has shapeshifting abilities like this.. such a wild way to end the season off surely there’s gotta be a sequel manga coming or something to continue the story.
brother crab's summer 2024 first impressions: isekai shikkaku
idk if we needed another anime dazai when the best one already exists
talking about him of course
anyway. in all seriousness. i'd say isekai shikkaku is solidly Fine But Not Good for now, it does nothing really special with the parody isekai genre. in terms of like... harem of girls obsessed with isekai'd mc who is completely oblivious and concerned with other things <- that trope? isekai oji-san does it way better
so all this one really has going for it, in terms of uniqueness, is the i guess constant stream of (attempted) suicide jokes that come bundled with dazai as a character. but can you really sustain a series on just that
well eating poison off the floor like a whorish cat is something i suppose
for kamiyan i will be continuing. i feel like i haven't seen him in anything all year. but so far it's just... mid, if i'm being generous
