My questions:

If money, time, and space were no object, what would be your dream pet?

A Ruidshon. It means, follows-the-river. These are beautiful, wild and large mammals which graze along rivers. They are untamed because of their solitary nature, but their strength and pride is admirable. They protect their offspring with their lives, which makes it dangerous to approach them during this time. They are incredibly loyal to their partner and stay together for life. I have always wondered what it would be like to form a bond with one of these wild beasts.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

My future is written in the sacred scriptures of our clan. I knew what I was going to be from an early age and received the education and training that was compulsory for it, so a choice was never in my hands. I was devoted to becoming a great leader and a fearsome warrior that could protect my people.

Are there seasons where you are from? What’s your favourite and why?

We have long seasons, two of them. Based on the moon rituals we partake in, I prefer the first season of the suncycle. These rituals are dedicated to finding and building our own strengths and resolve by searching within ourselves and through numerous meditative days. I enjoy these stretches of time where I connect with my true self, which is separate from the person I am in front of my people.

“Be honest: What (or whom)’s caused you to try and discard your desire to entertain the abstract?” He already had a pretty good idea of what might have caused it, but, Hearts wanted to hear it from the Empress of Ice, herself. “The world has disillusioned you, hasn’t it?” (Also for regular Maiz)

"Ugh," she groaned, making an annoyed face at the heart-and-mind-reader before her expression slipped back to it's neutral state.

She could hate Hearts all she wanted (and she did), but sometimes, she had to admit--his dedication to making her open up was admirable. "You are one of the most stubborn men I've ever had the displeasure of meeting." Heterochromic eyes met red ones after she dished out her insult-pliment. She started over with an exasperated sigh, suddenly looking more worn and tired than ever before.

"I grew up."

She may have been interested in magic and mysticism when she was younger, sure. But she was an adult now with adult responsibilities--and even though her surviving the Saiyan Genocide was considered by her to be a miracle of divine intervention--she really had no proof of it. If she was truly favored by the Goddess, God and Patron Saint of her religion, why couldn't she transform (into a Super Saiyan)? Why didn't they answer her prayers in returning her mother, aunt or at least Bardock to her . . . ? Why was it just her who made it out alive . . . ? Even when the world tried to erase her through the Galactic Patrol, another miracle happened; the curious inhabitants caught the debris from her ship (and her corpse) when she fell from Planet Kokytus' skies. They dutifully studied her body (by cutting her open) and traced back her origins, using educated guesses through the observed trajectory of her ship. They nursed her back to health though it took them three suncycles (years).

--BUT THEIR KINDNESS WAS REPAID WITH SLAUGHTER AND PARTIAL GENOCIDE.

And a hostile takeover of their planet, complete with a forceful assimilation of Saiyan Culture, including whatever parts of her language their bodies were able to speak.

"It is hard to keep faith when one is lost--when they don't know why they live. For what, or who they live for. I've had to make my own reason. I had to cling to what I knew. I don't believe what I did is incorrect or wrong." The tiredness was replaced with neutrality again. "I am disillusioned if only because I am still--in many ways, perhaps--trying to find an answer as to why I'm here again, back in the world in the living. I thought it was a freak accident. Or perhaps the work of my Goddess. I would much rather believe in the latter--in rare, divine miracles than anything else."

In other words, believing in sheer kindness was more ridiculous than magic itself, but while she could spare some thoughts to the latter, she outright refused to believe in the former. She wasn't one for self-reflections, and this coversation--upon many others that she's had with Hearts--showed it. It was her main weakness; the inability to see how she plays a part in the larger scale of things. She was narrow-minded when it came to her and the things that mattered, and discarded everything else that didn't fit. She was much, much, too selfish and inconsiderate of others.

Glossary

the CAVERNS - the name of this world, given to it by the Clan cats.

the SUN - a large, golden, crystal stalactite that illuminates the Caverns with constant, bright light.

SUNGLOW - another name for the light emitted by the Sun crystal.

the HORIZON - the border between east and west that splits DuskClan and DawnClan’s territory. This border is stable in the far north and south, in the twilight zone, but is hotly contested in the Daylands.

DAYLANDS - a roughly circular zone in the center of the Caverns, where the sun is brightest and it is eternally daytime. The Daylands are covered in thick forest.

DAWNLANDS - a twilight zone on the eastern side of the Caverns, where DawnClan lives. The Dawnlands are filled with crystalline structures and are the most cavern-like, with fissures, cliffsides, and tunnels.

DUSKLANDS - a twilight zone on the western side of the Caverns, where DuskClan lives. Filled with mossy stones, cold water streams, and vines.

NIGHTLANDS - the area furthest from the sun, where no light shines and it is eternally dark. Avoided by the Clan cats.

TWILIGHT - a general name for the areas between the Daylands and Nightlands.

DIMREACHES - the further half of the Twilight, where the Sunglow is very dim. Like the world on a moonless night.

NIGHTBEASTS - mutated creatures that lurk outside of the sun’s light. They are usually large, predatory, and hunt Clan cats

STARS - smaller crystals scattered around the Caverns that emit small amounts of light.

STARSHINE - light emitted by the Stars.

STARCYCLE - the Star crystals go through a cycle each day, where they grow dimmer and brighter like the rising and setting of the sun. One full cycle = one day.

STARHIGH - noon, when the Starshine is brightest

STARFALL - midnight, when the Starshine is dimmest

SUNCYCLE - the Sun crystal goes through a cycle each month, where it grows dimmer and brighter like the phases of the moon. One full cycle = one moon = one month.

SHADOWSUN - the day in which the Sun’s glow is weakest. This is when DuskClan healers visit MoonClan.

ZENITH - the day in which the Sun’s glow is strongest. This is when DawnClan’s healers visit StarClan.

STARSEED - small bits of gemstone that hold energy. Coveted by both Clans, but particularly desired by DuskClan.

SUNROOST - aka “the roost”. Around the Sun crystal, above the Daylands, are ledges and platforms where the seasonal birds flock en masse each season. The reason for the birds’ migration and flocking behavior is unknown, as they have nests and reproduce in the Nightlands. Each bird roosts for three suncycles (moons) which creates the four seasons for the Clan cats.

WATERWINGS - “Spring”. These birds have drooping feathers and extremely long tails made entirely of water. They shed water drops from their wings, creating a fine mist that settles over the Caverns during the spring and a constant drizzle of rain over the Daylands.

SUNBIRDS - “Summer”. Fiery birds that warm the caverns with plenty of light. These birds are by far the most intelligent and are universally revered as sacred beings of life itself.

GALEWINGS - “Autumn”. Nearly incorporeal, these birds’ wings are made up of air itself. These birds are far larger than the others and there are fewer of them. The flapping of their wings creates storms and heavy winds, circulating air throughout the entire Cavern system.

SNOWBIRDS - “Winter”. Icy birds whose wings are made up of crystal. They have frozen cores and water condenses to ice on their bodies. They shed snow from their wings and their presence chills the Caverns.

STARCLAN - patrons of DawnClan. They live inside the Star crystals; the brightest spirits shine in the Sun.

MOONCLAN - patrons of DuskClan. Their spirits reside deep in the stone beneath the Clans’ feet and their prophecies can be heard in the rumblings of the earth. Their spirits coax plants to grow from stone.

I’m excited to say that this collaborative and cycles/tarot-inspired piece is now available from her lovely Etsy shop in print format! 😍see below... #Repost @katebettysmith ・・・ 'Transitions' was created in collaboration with @shasha_crow, one of my lovely yoga teachers at @thezensheduk, for her 'Embracing Autumn' workshop. The workshop focused on a combination of the transition of the seasons in nature as we move into autumn, but also changes we experience daily, monthly and annually, represented by the cycles of the sun and the moon. Shasha also drew inspiration from the Wheel of Fortune tarot card. I decided to try to combine all of these cyclical elements into one 'Transitions' tarot card to represent the workshop. The border features the seasons moving from the buds of spring, into the greenery of summer, the vibrant oranges and browns of autumn and finally the starkness of winter. Nestled in each corner is a tarot wheel. The top half of the image shows the daily cycle of the sun, whilst the lower represents the monthly cycles of the moon. I absolutely loved creating this and felt like Shasha and I really clicked and world naturally very well together. I hope you enjoy it too!
