Grasping Vine (Shaman Archetype)

Ah yes, the Green Mother, the fey Eldest associated with all the ways that the natural world plays tricks on itself, everything from eyespots frightening away predators to the light lure of a deep-sea fish, to the stink of carrion from a carnivorous plant. All of these things are her purview, but as one might expect from the name, she favors plant life most of all.

So too, then, do her adherents, particularly the shamans that are sometimes called “grasping vines”.

However, the grasping vine shamans don’t actually have to be adherents of her to tap into this power, they instead must simply favor plants above all else and call upon a spirit that shares this interest, even if their primary powers lie elsewhere.

Regardless of how they got their powers, these shamans boast great power over plant life both in their spells and other magic.

As we’ll soon see, these mystics are well-rewarded for their devotion.

The shamans are not restricted in the type of spirits they call for their primary, though Life, Nature, and Wood are of course the most common. Others might be fairly unique beings that blend their aspect with a love of plant life, such as a spirit of rain that nourishes a forest, or a fire spirit of the flame that clears undergrowth to improve the health of a forest.

Instead of an animal familiar, these shamans instead call upon a small animated plant that loosely resembles such an animal, a gift from their spiritual patron.

No matter what their patron spirit’s spells normally would be, they instead provide a variety of plant-based spells, conjuring barriers and entrapping fields of plants, animating and conjuring plant monsters, hardening the flesh like bark, commanding plants, and even destructive plant spells such as wilting vegetation or imbuing seeds with explosive fire.

These mages also learn how to communicate magically with plants, even implanting the seeds of certain behaviors in plant monsters when necessary.

They also gain the ability to shapeshift into progressively larger and/or more complex plant creatures as well in an almost druid-like manner, though for a much shorter period.

Interested in playing a more plant-focused shaman? This archetype may be what you’re looking for, what with the ability to shapeshift into plant battle forms and speak with plants. Fair warning though, the replacement spirit spells are all magic that is already on the shaman spell list, so you aren’t getting anything normally unavailable to them, but it’s still a fun archetype overall. If you really want to play into the plant-focused nature, I’d recommend taking the Summon Plant Ally feat to add a bunch of classic plant monsters to your potential summons.

While they no doubt have a lot of love for all plant life, grasping vines probably share their largest love for carnivorous plants and plant monsters, especially if we assume they have a connection to the Green Mother. The question of whether they adhere to her more predatory aspects themselves, however, is another story.

Jellyfish schools are a common danger in the Shimmering Sea, but the real danger lies in the predatory kelp that dwells there as well. However, certain merfolk tribes dwell there regardless, revering the predatory plants as the fingers of their kelp god, led by mystics that can command them.

The Sunhide Rainforest, so infamously thick that light barely reaches the forest floor, has always had ties to the plane of shadow, and the wayangs living there have an affinity for the plant life there, as not only does it grab up all the light that would hurt their eyes, but the also long ago contacted spirits that embody the carnivorous plant monsters therein.

Said to be the soul of a treant elder and lorekeeper, the spirit Longspeech commands eons of experience, as well as plant life. However, to contact and bond with him, the shaman must devote themselves to nature more so than other shamans do.

Ehecatl Citlali background part 1 (equipment)

When a Sun Serpent attains a new rank it is customary for him to bury his old weapons as he symbolically buries his old life, however if a marine attains the rank of chapter master they must go one step further, all their personal equipment; armour, weapons even old totems of past victories must be given over to the Endless Road to the Sun only ancient relics such as terminator armour are kept for their scarcity cannot be understated. When a new chapter master is elected they are taken down into the deepest recesses of the Ziggurat of Dawn to an underground gauntlet where they must undergo a secret trial known as the Toxiuhmolpilia (New Fire in low gothic) where the new chapter master must face their inner daemons and enlighten themselves to what they are to be, using this knowledge to craft their new armoury. It begins with the new chapter master ingesting a special concoction created by Master of Sanctity a mixture of the venom of the death-shard frog and datura flower, the combination making an extraordinarily powerful hallucinogen that affects even the enhanced physiology of an astartes. With his mind twisting around itself the chapter master must battle the shades conjured by his own mind, with only his will and the emperor's grace to guide him. Should the hallucinating marine defeat the creatures of his mind he will receive visions which the Serpents believe are messages from the God-Emperor guiding him in the creation of his new weapons and armour. However because of the sheer potency of the ingested mixture and the nightmarishness of visions it induces this final trial carries a substantial risk of driving the potential chapter master insane, requiring him to be mind scrubbed and sent back to his company to recover and hone his will so he may attempt the trials if he is ever elected again, or perhaps most terrifyingly of all the mind of the hallucinating Sun Serpent may snap reducing them to a snarling blood-crazed monster; a dark reminder of where the children of Ce Acatl's heritage is traced to, if the aspiring master is 'Devoured by the Red Sands' the accompanying Master of Sanctity is charged with the duty of administering the Emperor's peace to the failed brother. In the case of the current chapter master, Ehecatl Citlali, for reasons unknown the dream-scape nearly consumed him, while the trial usually takes at most a few minutes Ehecatl was teetering on the edge of madness for an hour, visions of great red devils descended on him trying to break his very soul. In the end however, as an immense winged titan of blood drenched fury descended on thehallucinating astartes he realised his purpose, the darkness that had descended on his mind burned with the light of this new purpose and thus the relics he now bears into battle were made. The Skyward Spear: Usually the creation of a chapter master's Macuahuitl pattern weapons is allowed only during their promotion ritual however, with Ehecatl there were...unique circumstances. As the only man ever to tame one of the mighty Eodraco-Rex that roam the equatorial jungles of Ce Acatl: Xiuhcoatl. At the time of Ehecatl's ascension to chapter master his companion had reached such an immense size that absolutely none of the weapons he created were large enough to even reach most foes (aside from larger ones such as greater demons or Tyranid monsters) so, the this new weapon was created. a devastating instrument of war the Skyward Spear's length allows its savage shredding edges to reach all foes and unleash the Sky-Emperor's wrath upon them. Piranha Maw: As a chapter well renowned for their savagery and vicious skill in close quarters combat, the Sun Serpents naturally pride themselves on the devastating power of their weapons; thus it should come as little surprise that Ehecatl Citlali wields possibly the finest example of a Macuahuitl pattern sword. Edged with obsidian blades shaped into vicious facsimiles of the notoriously savage swarm-predators that lurk in the many winding rivers of Ce Acatl, thanks to their wickedly sharp curves these harsh razor-edges can turn even the most superficial of nicks into fatal blood-gushing rends. Jaguar's Talon: The Jaguar Talon is truly worthy of its title, like that animal it is named after, any wounds caused by this blade are terrifyingly clean, any armour is akin to smoke, it cleaves through all foes rending them apart as though they were nothing, each blade is drenched with the blood of the innumerable foes they have carved through; from hive tyrants, to daemon princes, to ork warlords all fall to the Jaguar's Talon. Sunhide Shield: Bound with the skin of an immense creature said to be an avatar of the Emperor's Divine Wrath, the scales of the shield blaze with the fury of the sun, scorching all those who would attempt to harm Ehecatl, melting their weapons and searing their flesh. Feathered Crown: On the world of Ce Acatl there are legends of a mighty winged serpent; a manifestation of the Sky-Emperor as a bringer of victory that roams the skies searching for the enemies of mankind, this creature name Quetzalcoatl (which is the namesake of the Sun Serpents most sacred relic: the mightiest fellblade of the chapter) in honour of this Ehecatl constructed the Feathered Crown to show his devotion to the Emperor. The brilliant feathers that cover the helmet are said to; much like the scales that cover the Sunhide Shield to come from this legendary avatar of the Emperor's wrath giving the Feathered Crown a regal aura of undeniable command. The inner-workings of the Crown are spectacularly advanced, displaying all manner of battfield data for Ehecatl allowing him to quickly assess the tides of battle. Celestial Panapoly: An ornate suit of maximus power armour decorated in the totems and fetishes of Ce Acatl, patterned with so called 'dawn marks', it is said that the Celestial Panapoly imbues the wearer with the burning vigour of the stars.
