Me afecta demasiado la maldad, la agresividad, el miedo, la crueldad... bastante tengo con lidiar con mi mente, con en el mundo real... todo es real para la mente, no puedo ver esas películas. No quiero. Qué tienen en la mente esa gente para hacer películas así. Un poder tan grande, dirigido por seres sin escrúpulos, retorcidos, corrompidos por la ignorancia. Sabes el poder que es que todas esas mentes vivan esa experiencia? Qué están dando de comer a esas almas? Comida basura. Me estoy construyendo mi propio huerto. Tengo que seguir haciéndolo. Hay otras formas de habitar este mundo, hay otras formas, formas que te permiten desarrollar el ser de una manera más elevada, mas amorosa, más consciente.

Another thought I’ve been having relates back to The Scorching, the history behind it, and how much of a good twist it was to throw out. I don’t know if it was planned or a convenient retcon, but it works on so many levels thanks to the themes already present. It also leads to some interesting theories.
Burn could never have been queen. The first action we see her do in the books is destroy an egg due to hatch within the next few nights. It’s cruel, and most of all, it sealed her fate. The kingdoms were founded on the blood and tears of furious mothers, broken hearted from losing their eggs and determined to keep their broods safe. Burn couldn’t have been queen, because that is not what a queen should be. Thorn takes the throne because she took over a city, created an army, and fought tooth and claw to find and save her lost dragonet, despite the odds.
Glory takes the throne because she is the dragonet who should have been cared for. She should have been seen, noticed, and saved. She wants to be queen not to have the nicest things, but because someone should care when a dragonet disappears. The first dragon she rescues is a dragonet. She is worthy because Grandeur gave up on her dragonets and her tribe, but Glory refused to give up.
Coral isn’t a good dragon; her abuses and her absolute classist nature are abhorrent. However, she is marked by her craze as she watched as so many of her daughters were crushed in their eggs. The horror of losing a child is what marks a queen, in some shape or form. Orca was not worthy of the throne, because before she even challenged her mother, she devised a way to kill every dragonet that could challenge her before they so much as crawled out of their egg.
What one truly has to wonder is when the rules changed. When did it become a rule that to become queen, there had to be a fight to the death? When did mothers find themselves pitted against daughters, sisters, nieces, all for the power of the throne she has? Who came up with the deadly challenge?
One can only wonder.

I’m on a bit of a tenor streak but also looking at slightly different ensembles. I will wrap up an essay on sax/bass/drums trios after watching Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Hero Trio from Smoke this weekend that also takes up Nicole Glover last Sunday and a Monday evening look at a recent Lew Tabackin date. So CHRIS LEWIS and JOEL FRAHM fit that and Lewis is now SEAN MASON’s duo partner for monthly or so late night Mezzrow’s gigs. To go with that duo, JEREMY PELT repeated his Art of Intimacy line up for a drummerless trio.
And it was actually that one that was the most rewarding though JEREMY PELT is a trumpeter not a saxophonist. But he’s a trumpeter with a buttery tone and a relaxed pace. The album was with George Cables and Peter Washington, but Sullivan Fortner and exciting newcomer Leighton Harrell were excellent too. Fortner’s trio work is, I find, a bit too clever and self-indulgent. He loses focus and chases too many musical ideas, but here he had Pelt’s intelligence and lyricism to support and answered in kind. He moved in the direction of what I have appreciated in Sean Mason (not as prevalent this time though), deep listening to create sympathetic parallel melodies. I saw Harrell on a Joe Farnsworth gig with Emmet Cohen and saw promise. There’s more evidence here as the absence of a drummer both gave him that rhythmic responsibility (and he is so solid) but also sonic space. His solos—and Pelt gave him space and Fortner was restrained but helpful—were thoughtful and extensive. The ones on April in Paris (the over all best tune with some Basie-isms including ”one more time” but with Fortner taking the brass role and Pelt’s solo having Basie’s own spareness while swinging irrepressibly) and the Parker’s Mood closer (bop and blues but relaxed). I saw a lot of Pelt recently, as part of the Heavy Hitters and then back with the Black Art Jazz Band, two all-star bands which he very much belongs in. But, on his own gig, he can exalt the tradition (a Paul Chambers tune and some standards) on his own terms. He does fine, classy work.
For some reason SEAN MASON took up more space than he usually does and poor Chris Lewis laid back. I like Lewis’s adventurous traditionalism, that is, like Mason, he knows tunes and how they’ve been explored, synthesizing and adding on his own terms with a very comfortable tone. They did their usual medley, working through five tunes non-stop in 33 minutes with some awfully nice passages. But Mason soloed as such more and there were longish segues. I suppose it could have been Lewis who was subdued and ceded space, but the upshot was that I didn’t find it as magical. Mason has brought in Martina da Silva for some of these gigs and she has a fine way with songs (here, I Cover the Waterfront and I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good). They took them for nice rides, but they were necessarily more structured than these gigs often are.
JOEL FRAHM is an appealing enough tenor man with a comfortable tone and approach. He opened with Wayne Shorter’s Yes or No and had a Sonny Rollins tune (Sunnymoon?) just before the Bye Bye Blackbird closer. So he’s got good taste as he also had a Billy Eckstine tune in there. The band was supportive (another chance to see John Chin who swung more than I remembered but maybe the irrepressible Omer Avital was a bit repressed, just not as out there) but it was Frahm’s gig. He’s worth knowing, maybe not a regular in NYC, but he had a two night run. I’ll keep an eye out, but it was a Hanging Out at Small’s Live moment where I dropped in to relax, there because I value what the venue/s offer.

Okay, so what if Bluestar’s prophecy was outright and blatantly wrong? What if it was a complete misreading of the sign?
Take Goosefeather’s Curse out of the equation. Bluepaw’s strange encounter with the fox and the fire could probably have been interpreted in many different ways.
She was separated by a predator’s jaws - she was SAVED - by a burning branch. What if her prophecy always meant that she would be saved from danger by fire, instead?
Bluestar was never meant to be fire. She was the ferocious mother of ThunderClan, its leader and queen. But ever since she was but an apprentice, StarClan had always known that fire would save her - and her beloved clan - from a danger that lurked in their very forest. Fire would save her. Fire would save everyone.
Perhaps, maybe, Goosefeather just couldn’t interpret it correctly because he hadn’t had the pieces to.
