[ You may have seen reports of protests at some of our offices yesterday. Unfortunately, a number of employees brought the event into our buildings in New York and Sunnyvale. They took over office spaces, defaced our property, and physically impeded the work of other Googlers. Their behavior was unacceptable, extremely disruptive, and made co-workers feel threatened. We placed employees involved under investigation and cut their access to our systems. Those who refused to leave were arrested by law enforcement and removed from our offices.

Following investigation today, we terminated the employment of twenty-eight employees found to be involved. We will continue to investigate and take action as needed.

Behavior like this has no place in our workplace and we will not tolerate it. It clearly violates multiple policies that all employees must adhere to - including our Code of Conduct and Policy on Harassment, Discrimination, Retaliation, Standards of Conduct and Workplace Concerns.

We are a place of business and every Googler is expected to read our policies and apply them to how they conduct themselves and communicate in our workplace. 1. Joe Biden formally backs consumers’ right to repair their electronics

2. Steve Irwin’s family has saved over 90K animals, including Australia wildfire victims

The family of the late Steve Irwin has helped rescue 90,000 animals including those falling victim to the ongoing wildfire devastation in Australia. Terri Irwin, the widow of Steve Irwin, and their children, daughter Bindi and son Robert Irwin, own and operate the Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital.

“Wildlife Hospital takes in animals from all over Australia. A bill passed by the 2021 Hawaii State Legislature banning shark fishing took effect January 1st of this year. House Bill 553 makes it illegal to knowingly capture, entangle, or kill a shark in state marine waters. The new law applies to all shark species found off the coast of Hawaii.

$10,000 for a third or subsequent offense.

Puritans vs Cavaliers?

Like I said before, I’m a history nut. I noticed the dates of FS:1666 and assuming Union as founded anywhere up to a decade prior, it’s possible the folks who set up shop all the way out West in the New World were Roundheads seeking a fresh start in the wake of the English Restoration and King Charles II of the Stuarts returning from exile to take his beheaded father’s throne. George Fier would have been a Puritan, but that doesn’t mean the rest of his family - parents and siblings - were. I imagine after the events of 1666 George was a broken man (guy lost both his children in a 24 hour span via truly horrific means; can you blame him?). He dies via drink some years later, and his will, when found, presents complications. You see, Union (and her successor towns) are English settlements founded on and following English common law. It’s why Sarah Fier was hanged instead of burnt as would have been done on the Continent or in Scotland. It’s why property and titles pass in a strictly male-line primogeniture unless otherwise specified by writ (which most men don’t think to do, as they can’t conceive of a time where their line might produce only daughters). It’s why Alderman Goode and his brother Solomon wish George had the sense to die intestate (w/o a will) because what’s written there is giving them migraines. George Fier sank into the bottle after his son and daughter died and never really climbed back out. His will was last updated in 1665 and specifies that his lands and possessions pass to his son Henry and Henry’s descendants; should Henry die without legitimate children, then everything goes to Sarah and her husband, to be inherited by their second son on his coming of and and contingent on said son assuming the name of Fier. If for some reason George outlives his kids, then everything reverts to George’s brother in England because legacy is important, y’all, and things need to stay in the family. This is where the trouble comes in - George’s brother is a Royalist. George’s parents were royalists. George’s nephews and nieces are likely to also be decadent Royalists and have absolutely zero interest in claiming a small acreage of land in the New World from their dead estranged uncle. Had George died w/o that will, his lands would have reverted to the State, with the town authorities able to do with it what thou wilt. Much easier that way. But Alderman Goode is adamant on the rule of law, and notice is sent eastward across Virginia to Middle Plantation (modern Williamsburg), then to Jamestown, and from thence to London. A couple of years pass. Nothing happens. Nobody thinks the English Fiers are going to show up, much less claim the lands; at best Elijah and Solomon can expect a codicil, signed and notarized, that formally says “thanks but no thanks”. It is to great upheaval that 1690 sees Sunnyvale becoming host to George Fier’s youngest great-nephew. Along with the Honourable Sir Ezra Fier comes the man’s wife, the Lady Bess Clifford of the Cumberland Cliffords, and their assorted friends, servants and baggage train. George’s brother did very well for himself, but that fortune doesn’t really trickle down to younger sons. Sunnyvale is appalled at these new Fiers and their sinful, decadent, luxurious ways. They’re High Church, not even Lutheran. No plain dress here; both Ezra and his lady are regularly garbed in colourful silks that cost more than all of Virginia’s net earnings in a year. Their personal pastor and the pastor’s sister are little better - sober colours, but rich cloth. Even their servants wear as everyday dress good cloth and fine woollens the locals reserve for Sunday best! Sir Ezra and Lady Bess are likewise appalled at Sunnyvale and Shadyside. They were expecting a well-staffed and extensive plantation, not this mud hole. Also, there is precious little diversion; no operas, no plays, no taverns or games of chance or playing cards, nothing that is not Godly in some form or another. The Fiers agree to sell, and sell dearly. It’s only a matter of haggling over price. The negotiations take

the rest of that year, and extend into the next. By 1691 the goodwives of Sunnyvale are in agreement - Lady Bess is a snob. She keeps to herself, shuns the company of the locals, and has only a companion, a Lady Caroline Fitzalan-Howard, along with a ladies maid, Frances Kearney, to keep from going absolutely spare while her husband bargains loudly and at length with the Goodes. Frances Kearney is maid and cook and cleaner (the Fiers don’t trust anyone outside their circle) and notable for veiling her face, to hide the pox scars she got as a younger girl. The entire Fier group get so fed up with Sunnyvale that they move to Shadyside, where amenities aren’t much better, but at least they’re united in their shared disdain. By the summer of 1961, Solomon has had enough. The negotiations have gone on far too long, the Fiers are a drain on everyone’s resources and sanity, and the Pact is demanding another sacrifice. Ezra Fier is right out, too suspicious. Lady Bess, Lady Caroline and the pastor are from prominent English noble families. Ezra’s clerk and manservant both come from established Virginia towns with extended kin to inquire into their actions and whereabouts should things go awry. Frances Kearney it is, then. The Irish orphan lassie with the pockmarked face and dab hand with a needle goes on a killing spree one night. She manages to kill Sir Ezra Fier, his clerk and manservant, Elijah Goode, Elijah’s only son, and their manservant, and maims Fier’s confessor before the Ladies Bess and Caroline hole themselves up in the ground floor strongroom only they, the pastor and Sir Ezra ever enter. It is the man of God, Philip Fitzalan-Howard, who dispatches Frances Kearney, though it is less revenge over the deaths of the other men and the slights he himself has suffered than a desire to protect his sister, Lady Caroline. Morning dawn and brings light to the bloodshed, along with a secret these Fiers had successfully kept under wraps until now. (Sorry, they’re not devil worshipping Satanists, that’s still strictly the domain of Solomon Goode and his line.) The truth is nearly just as bad - Sir Ezra, Lady Bess, Lady Caroline, along with Caro’s brother Philip and the late unlamented Frances Kearney, are all Popish recusants - Roman Catholics in a kingdom decidedly Protestant and where adherence to the old faith that Henry VIII deliberately abandoned in his quest to marry and swive as many noblewomen as possible to beget a son meant forfeiture of estates and titles followed by exile (at best) and torture followed by execution/martyrdom (at worst). Lady Bess Clifford-Fier is shaken, scared, newly widowed, and not an idiot. She sells the land her late husband inherited for enough coin to get herself and her friends north to Quebec and New France, where the people might be frogs and England‘s eternal enemy, but are at least compatriots in religion. They take Sir Ezra and Frances Kearney’s remains along - Lady Caroline is firmly of the opinion that all this time spent amongst Protestant heretics drove the maid mad, a consensus shared by her friend a asks her brother - and the poor souls deserves a proper burial. Meanwhile, the Wall has gained its third name, and Shadyside’s rumoured reputation of ill repute, bad fortune, and lawlessness is beginning to solidify into fact. It will take another 300 years for the town to finally overturn that label.

Fear Street Part One: 1994 offers some retro-style fun while serving as an amendment/update to a style of horror film that has a hard time setting itself in a post-cell phone era. Does it meet the level of, or even supplant the best entries in the slasher genre? No. While it’s a promising chapter in the upcoming trilogy, there are some major issues its sequels should address.

In 1994, massacres are an all-too-common occurrence in Shadyside. The hopelessness Deena Johnson (Kiana Madeira) feels is amplified by the neighboring, crime-free Sunnyvale, where her girlfriend Sam (Olivia Scott Welch) has moved to. After Sam is injured in a car accident, a masked killer begins pursuing her. More unsettling is the fact "Skullface" was gunned down by the police days earlier. With the authorities unable to help, Sam, Deena, her younger brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.), and her friends Simon (Fred Hechinger) and Kate (Julia Rehwald) must figure out what is going on, and how to make it stop.

Part One (and the subsequent chapters I suspect) are a little bit of this, and a bit of that. You’re reminded of the Scream and Friday the 13th franchises, the stories of witchcraft and lesbian main character shows this trilogy will have modern-day ideas, while the numerous other killers mentioned either make you think of a movie you swear you’ve seen before or of one you suspect you might’ve heard of but never actually got around to watching. It kind of plays like a movie that connects every other "dead teenager" movie. It’s always felt like the same kind of people were at the other end of Cropsey, Leatherface, and Freddy Krueger’s weapons. Connecting them all with a single, cursed town is a great idea. The film is strongly nostalgic in this way and its musical choices.

You get the iconic killers dispatching victims in memorable fashions, the engaging mystery, and something new too. Not only with the characters but also in a more contemporary attitude towards visual minorities, sex, drugs, and the police.

Unfortunately, the film suffers from the structure it implemented upon itself. Part One does not attempt to tie things up at all, making it feel more like a television series than an actual movie. Much attention is given to the characters’ relationships, which is good… but also frustrating. The teens have come up with a plan. It’s kind of dumb, but who cares as long as it works? Then comes the high school drama. Everyone takes turns spilling their feelings and making doe-eyes towards each other. You have better things to do right now!

There are numerous stupid decisions made throughout, including one of my all-time most hated. Deena and Sam have discovered that the masked murdered after them is undead. What do they do? Tell the police a corpse is chasing them, then get mad when they aren’t taken seriously. Other bad decisions are hard to categorize. Do the teens make no attempts whatsoever to contact their parents (or any adults) because they’re not particularly bright, or because the movie wants this to be a teen-centered story, and hope you won’t notice?

Though well-acted, centered around a compelling mystery, and featuring the carnage you hope to see from a slasher film, Fear Street Part One: 1994 overestimates itself. We may have all had a woe-is-me nihilistic phase in our teenage years but spending nearly two hours with someone who feels that way is asking a lot. Still, I must admit I am curious to see what's next. With the next chapters definitely coming out, I can cautiously recommend it. Maybe things will get better. (July 8, 2021)
