Turtles & Turnips Monthly Newsletter 01: June Events, a New VC Event, Updates, and More!

Hello, hello! It is Admin Star, everyone! I'm pleased to bring you what will be the first of our monthly blog posts detailing current happenings within the Turtles & Turnips community, including server events, updates, things currently in development, and more! Let's get right down to it, shall we?
Scheduling for June VC Events
Friday, June 6th, 9 PM EST: Turtle Pile 1
Saturday, June 14th, 7 PM EST: Watch Party (This month's selection: The King, The Shredder Strikes Back duology, and Tales of Leo)
Saturday, June 21st, 8 PM EST: Turtle Pile 2
Sunday, June 29th, 7 PM EST: Turtle Pile 3
A New Server Event: Hosted By Artists, For Artists!
A new voice chat event is currently in development! While the name is still pending, the general idea is pretty simple: During the event, the artists of Turtles & Turnips will gather together in the VC so that they can do things like show off illustration WIPS, stream pieces as they're drawing, give each other feedback, and provide tips tricks, and general art advice to one another! We're thinking about holding this event at least twice a month with the start time being either 6:00 or 7:00 PM EST; specific weekday is up in the air, although it'd most likely happen sometime between Monday and Thursday to avoid conflicting with other events such as the Watch Parties and Turtle Piles. Hopefully, we'll have the schedule finalized and can begin hosting it by this July.
Speaking of which...
1st Anniversary Project!
Turtles & Turnips's 1st Anniversary is coming up this summer on July 25th. In celebration, we are currently putting together a fun little project that will see its release on the server's birthday! Sign-ups are open until June 7th, so if you join Turtles & Turnips before this coming Saturday, you will still have a chance to join in on the fun. Otherwise, look forward to a proper announcement in the near-future!
Exploring the 2003 Series
Not too long after we got the server blog up and running, we got a friendly anon asking about the possibly of starting a dedicated archive for TMNT 2003. As they pointed out, there aren't really any places online dedicated to the 2003 series outside Turtlepedia, and a lot of the available media for it (ex: production art) tends to be hidden away on niche blogs or has been uploaded in very low quality. From my perspective, a project like that is incredibly tempting, but also extremely daunting since it's not just a matter of gathering as much associated media for the series as possible; it's also about organizing everything so that it's easy to find as well as verifying information to make sure it's accurate. At least as it stands, I don't see it becoming a major project anytime soon just because of the amount of organization required, as well as community participation to ensure we obtain everything we possibly can.
That said, one of our plans for this blog is to take the time to explore the history of the 2003 series, from the beginnings of its production in early 2001 all the way up through to its cancellation in 2009, along with the legacy left behind by the stories it told, the characters it introduced, and the people who worked on it. If we at least begin with that, it could very well end up expanding into something bigger beyond that. Either way, we'll see what happens!
That's all for now! Take care, everyone!

A Look at Community Synchronization: Catalunan Grande’s Struggle for Transportation Reform | INVESTIGATIVE NEWS
Catalunan Grande, Davao City — In a community where the daily commute begins to eat most of the citizens’ energy, the gap between local governance and practical solutions for transportation becomes increasingly evident. As the population of Catalunan Grande continues to grow, the weight on its already strained public transport system continues to reveal itself to the public.
Barangay Oversight and the Push for Self-Organization
Efforts to address these problems are officially in place, but recent conversations with Barangay Kagawad Honorable Desiderio A. Lopez, reveals a system struggling to find its footing. Hon. Lopez, one of the key figures overseeing transportation matters in the barangay, insists that the local government has made strides toward organizing its drivers.
He points to the creation of the Catalunan Grande Transport Cooperative (Catransco) as evidence of the barangay’s commitment to supporting jeepney drivers.
"Sa atuang barangay karoon, naa man tay gi-create na kanang nagkalain-lain bitaw na committee. So, apila diya ang committee on transportation. So, meaning, kasabot na ang barangay ug naa poy pagpakabana sa atuang transportation na sitwasyon," Lopez explained, emphasizing that the barangay has indeed taken steps to address these issues.
However, this approach relies heavily on self-organization, giving the wheel to drivers to manage their own associations. Lopez noted that this strategy aims to empower drivers by allowing them to form cooperatives that can access more formal support.
At the same time, this approach requires a level of organization and initiative that not all drivers may find equally accessible and or inclusive, potentially disbalancing the transport sector.
The Uncertain Path to Bus Augmentation
Lopez also highlighted the ongoing challenge of implementing the national jeepney modernization program within the barangay. Many operators are wary of this shift, fearing that compliance costs will outweigh the long-term benefits.
The Kagawad acknowledged this reality, noting that while the barangay supports modernization, it has struggled to provide clear guidance or tangible support to affected drivers.
"Eventually, dira ra japon ta paingon. Kanang tawag na nilang modernization sa atong transport. Hopefully karon right after pag-come sa election, siguro ang LTFRB, facilitate na sa atong tama nga transport," Lopez admitted, hinting at the inevitable but difficult transition.
To address immediate capacity shortages, the barangay has explored bus augmentation as a stopgap measure. Currently, two buses serve the area, a number significantly lower than the six originally requested by local officials. According to Lopez, this reduction was driven by concerns from bus operators about profitability during non-peak hours, where buses often run nearly empty despite heavy morning demand.
Leadership Gaps and the Road Ahead
Further complicating this landscape is the limited public visibility of Barangay Captain January Duterte, who was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
Barangay personnel also mentioned that Duterte is rarely seen at the barangay office, often appearing at unpredictable intervals, adding another layer of complexity to local governance efforts.
This leadership vacuum places significant responsibility on kagawads like Lopez, who frequently find themselves managing crises and handling day-to-day decisions without the direct oversight or guidance of higher barangay officials.
As the situation stands, Catalunan Grande’s commuters and drivers remain caught in a cycle of inconvenience and uncertainty, reliant on a patchwork system that struggles to balance immediate needs with long-term goals.
Until then, residents and members of the Catalunan Grande community remain on edge as they continue to wait patiently for the improved changes they were promised.

I saw something in the news today that truly took my breath away. If you have been paying attention to U.S. politics over the past few days, you’ve most likely seen this woman:

This is Bishop Mariann Budde, and on Monday (Trump’s inauguration) she led an interfaith prayer for Trump and the incoming administration. During the service she asked him to have mercy for LGBTQ+ Americans and undocumented immigrants. This was badly received by the Trump administration (as expected).
After seeing headlines about this woman, I read something that I wanted to share. In 1998 a man named Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay. I’m not going to get into the details of his death on this post, but please be warned it is extremely triggering if you do choose to read more on your own. Matthew Shepard’s death caused a lot of change in the U.S. regarding how LGBTQ hate crimes are handled, and laws that were passed to protect LGBTQ+ people.
Now you’re probably wondering what Matthew Shepard has to do with an Episcopal bishop. For years after Matthew Shepard’s murder, his family had held onto his remains, too scared to lay him to rest in fear of his final resting place being vandalized. In 2018, Budde had his remains interred at the National Cathedral, which is also the place where the interfaith prayer for Trump and his administration took place. The impact of this really had an effect on me. Budde could have led a non confrontational prayer service, and chosen not to mention the harm that will come to the people Trump and his administration are going after. Instead she chose to call out hate and fear in front of some of the most powerful people on the planet, and at a place that has such a large historic meaning to the LGBTQ community.
In the next few years there will be many challenges in protecting free speech, standing up against hate, and protecting those in our communities. But I would like to believe that for every Donald Trump and Elon Musk, there are people like Marianne Budde. There are those of us who can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s important for those of us who can to amplify our voices, even if it’s not the ‘popular’ thing to do.
“And he said you should apologize. Will you apologize?
I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others.” - Mariann Budde’s response in a Time interview

Bay Area artist Nathan Oliveira (1928-2010) described himself as an abstract artist whose work had to be “about something.” For the prolific Oliveira, the “something” is a point of departure for the viewer, not the point of arrival — “evocative” and “intangible” are often used in describing his work. Solitary figures in vague and open landscapes appear frequently in his work. The Oliveira show at Santa Clara’s Triton Museum of Art, “Variations on Form,” spans many decades and mediums. You know what?
My ancestors would have wanted pasteurization, vaccines, antibiotics, disinfectants, birth control, psychiatric medications, pain management, anesthesia. My ancestors would have wanted to be able to keep their loved ones around longer, and not lose them too early/too soon to childbirths, injuries, bacterial infections, mental illnesses, and diseases that are curable and/or preventable in our modern day life.
Modern medicine saves lives.
