PMMP's and Kuumaa's joint song encourages the youth suffering from mental health problems: "The contacts are darker than before"

Music | The favourite bands wanted to make music together and the topic was found in the experiences of the fans.

Among the most successful bands of the year that is about to end, PMMP and Kuumaa have released new music together.

The song Haloo's topic is the mental health of young people. The bands regard the text as being about "a person close to you disappearing into the darkness of the storm in their mind and wanting to be there for them".

The song got its start from the feedback that both bands have gotten from their fans. It is also meant to raise money for Mieli Ry's christmas fundraiser, which is aiming to maintain the operation of the young people's Sekasin-chatservice.

PMMP got contacts back in the start of the 2000's, when the band made its breakthrough. One of the soloists in charge of the writing for the band, Paula Vesala, says that the tone of the fan messages has been darker in recent years.

"This year they have been more suicidal than before."

PMMP's Mira Luoti says that in messages some say they have stayed alive by listening to the band's music.

"Of the messages, those have been from the lighter end", Luoti says. "But they are actually really sad and worrisome. They have to be answered and linked to some help. However, we're not professionals in that field."

PMMP and Kuumaa got to know each other at festival shows, and at the same time an idea of making music together was born. In conversation between the bands it turned out that Kuumaa has also gotten feedback from young fans, whose will to live has started running thin.

"We've asked mental health work professionals what we need to do in this situation. Once we got a message 20 minutes before a show was starting from a person that said they wanted to take their own life", Kuumaa's singer and songwriter Johannes Brotherus says.

"We've gotten instructions on what to do, because there can be a lot of those messages and we can't be responsible, and the situation can be really acute."

PMMP also asked for help from experts in similar situations in their previous era of success.

The song Haloo's main message is the want to encourage those suffering from mental health problems to seek out help and to talk about how you're feeling to someone. At the same time with the song they want to encourage people to support the supportwork of mental health organisations that aim to offer the opportunity to be heard to young people. The public funding of the services have been decided to cut.

"Mieli ry's Sekasin-chat can now answer only quarter of the contacts they receive, but for next year there are still heavy funding cuts coming. When I needed help back when I was young, there was no chat, just hospitalization. Without that I maybe wouldn't even be alive", Vesala says.

Though the topic of the joint song is serious, musically Haloo is fast and in a hopeful manner forward pushing rock.

It is exceptional that in the song all musicians from both bands play. The work was split so that each player, including the drummers and bassists, each took turns to play a part of the song and then the colleague continued from that through the next portion.

The collaboration will for now remain to be this one song. Kuumaa will next year focus on making new songs and will only do a few shows. PMMP's return this year is coming to an end this weekend in the club shows in Jyväskylä and Joensuu.

The timeframe is narrow but the bands hope that they will get to play the song together in front of an audience.

"We'll try with the remaining PMMP-shows", Vesala says.

I often find my brain to be imaginative in a paranoid direction. When I was younger I would have more discomfort surrounding these paranoid "what if" scenarios. But at this point I just kinda brush it off and go "yeah that would be wild" and move on.

And it made me realize that the amount of weird or even paranoid thoughts that I have isn't generally indicative of how I'm doing. The real indicator is how I respond to them and how I feel about it.

There are times where the fairly tame anxiety thought of "people keep track of whether I pick up after my dog, but they do it poorly, so if they spot me during a walk where I'm not yet carrying a poop bag (or if I had thrown it into a bin), they will feel intense judgment towards me!" is enough to trigger an intense paranoid-anxious feeling. And other times (most times) where I go "ok" and walk on.

And the existence of more novel and intricate paranoid fantasies can even be a good side, when it isn't accompanied by intense fear. Bc it's almost like my brain checking in on me and vice versa, just.. confirming that I'm awake and my thinky faculties seem to be still be in order
