The Jospeh Francis Life- Car
This life-car, patented in 1845 by Joseph Francis, was one of the most successful life-support devices developed at that time. The floatable and capsule-shaped metal ambulance was used to rescue shipwrecked people when the ship sank near land.

The Francis life-car, 1850 (c) Smithsonian Museum of American History
While standing on the beach, a person from a rescue station used a mortar to shoot strong lines at the ship, which were then attached to the ship's mast. The lifeboat was attached to these lines and pulled along them. It is therefore an extension of the Breeches Bouy of Trengrouse that could only save one person. Francis's life-car was able to carry four people at the same time. They lay flat while being towed through the rough water to the shore for safety.

Two to four people were sealed inside for each ride from ship to shore. Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, July 1851
This life-car was first used on January 12, 1850, to rescue the stranded British bark Ayrshire. The ship, most likely filled with Irish immigrants fleeing the potato famine, ran aground on a sand bar off the New Jersey shore at Squan Beach. A blinding snow storm made the ocean too dangerous to launch a surfboat, the usual method of rescue, so local lifesavers decided to launch the newly installed, experimental life-car. Although never tested in an actual emergency, the Francis life-car performed as envisioned.

Wreck of the Ship Ayrshire 1850 (x)
Out of 166 passengers and 36 crew members on the Ayrshire, only one was lost, perhaps needlessly, in the short journey from ship to shore. A male passenger insisted on riding on top of the life-car while his family inside was hauled to safety. He could not hold on and was washed away by the surf. Over the next three years, this device rescued at least 1,400 people on the New Jersey shore alone, as well as countless amounts of valuable cargo.

#OnThisDay #July30th 1865 #156Anniversary #BrotherJonathan was a paddle steamer that struck an uncharted rock near Point St. George, off the coast of #CrescentCity, California, on July 30, 1865. The ship was carrying 244 passengers and crew, with a large shipment of gold. Only 19 people survived, making it the deadliest shipwreck up to that time on the #PacificCoast of the United States. Based on the passenger and crew list, 225 people are believed to have died. Its location was not discovered until 1993. On its last voyage, the ship had been heavily loaded and according to Captain DeWolf's widow, he felt that the ship sat too low in the water, even without the passengers, but he was told that if he did not set sail, he would be fired and replaced by someone else. Within hours of leaving #SanFrancisco Bay for #Portland and #Victoria, it ran into a gale. Most of the passengers became seasick and stayed in their cabins. Early on Sunday morning, the steamer anchored in Crescent City harbor on the first leg of its trip. After leaving the safety of the bay that afternoon, the ship encountered more stormy conditions. The seas were so bad near the California / Oregon border that the captain ordered the ship turned around for the harbor of Crescent City. Fifty-five minutes later on that return and close to port, the ship struck a rock, tearing a large hole in the hull. Within five minutes, the captain realized the ship was foundering and ordered the passengers and crew to abandon ship. Although there were enough lifeboats to hold all of the people on board, only three boats could be deployed. The rough waves capsized the first lifeboat that was lowered and smashed the second against the vessel's sides. Only a single surfboat, holding eleven crew members, five women, and three children, managed to escape and make it safely. For its final voyage, crates of #goldcoins had been loaded on the vessel, including the annual treaty payments in gold for #IndianTribes. #WellsFargo shipments consigned for Portland and Vancouver, and gold carried on board by the passengers. The gold alone was valued at $50 million in today's dollars. (at Brother Jonathan Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR-6DuAr0_Q/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is one of the first life-saving stations in the country, which was originally erected in 1849 at #Spermaceti Cove on Sandy Hook, now part of Gateway National Recreation Area. It was built with federal funds provided by the Newell Act of 1848. Congressman William A. Newell of New Jersey advocated for government involvement in life-saving and in 1848 he proposed the government provide $10,000 for “surfboats, rockets, carronades (line throwing mortars), and other necessary apparatus for the better preservation of life and property from shipwrecks on the coast of New Jersey lying between Sandy Hook and Little Egg Harbor.” New stations were built at Sandy Hook in 1872 and 1894. The 1894 building was featured yesterday. In 1955, the original 1849 life-saving station was relocated to what is now the Twin Lights Historic Site in Highlands, #NewJersey. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #history #americanhistory #explorenj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #architecture #archi_ologie #lifesavingstation #twinlights #shinglestyle #restoration #preserved #highlandsnj (at Twin Lights Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Do2EbH5Gf/?igshid=nwv5zlsqhrmy
