The Magician's Cape is a Swedish tale about a magician who tries to kidnap Alvida, a beautiful maiden known for her long, golden hair with magical properties. When she mends a tear in the magician's cape with a strand of hair, he is unable to do evil again.

John Bauer (June 4, 1882 - 1918) was a Swedish, Academy-trained illustrator and artist. He is best known for his troll pictures, but did other types of art as well. At age 36 he and his wife and son all drowned in a shipwreck.
