#shocked with myself (maybe pleasantly surprised? is the right phrase)#at actually liking barbie a great deal more than i had prepared myself to#it was just a lot more sincere than i had expected; i was afraid it wouldn't be/be more on the snarky side of cinema lately#but it was strangely so much more heartfelt than that#of course some points felt rushed/too on the nose#but the girls and ryan gosling made me so happy#and her at the end saying (spoilers obvs) that yes YES she does want to take life by the hand and pay the price to live and live#also as a former representative of unrequited love the throughline felt a lot gentler than i was prepared for it to be#it was a lot more about emotion and the joy of growing up and growing old than i expected#i don't necessarily think its heart is as pure as a truly great movie??#but it didn't laugh AT you. it made you laugh and it also meant what it said#which idk idk in a sea of endless winks at the camera laughing obnoxiously loudly media i appreciated the at least#wanting to live and live well aspect of it all and how it took that seriously#like someone on my dash said. i don't really know if it was a good movie?? but the borders of my mind are stretched#something in me is dreaming because of it. so i think that at least is worth it all#also all the girls in the theater laughing their heads off did something to me!!!#there were countless friends (including mine) decked out in pink and it was so so so sweet to me#(anyway. you didn't need these thoughts and maybe I'll retract it later when I've come down from the high of hugging both my buddies)

#okay i promise i'm going to get off tumblr and actually get something decent done#but i just have to mention that i started reading 'thief liar lady'#the cinderella retelling where she's pulling a con#which i did not have high expectations for because that concept screams 'we're going to prove how dumb the original cinderella story is'#so i have to give it credit that so far it's pleasantly surprising me by pulling back every time it's about to do something stupid#within the first page or two we have 'they say the slippers were glass and the carriage was made of a pumpkin which is so dumb'#which seems like standard cinderella bashing but it's also framed as an explanation of the magic system#as in 'this is a waste of magic based on the rules' not 'this story is stupid and my 'real' one is better' so i can live with it#we have the enemy prince she's trying to con but he's not a dumb strawman royal#he's actually a sweet guy and a shrewd diplomat#all the royals are actually getting credit for talents as well as flaws#no strawmen in sight (i still shudder to remember 'just ella')#it feels like real politics#and there is *so much* politics and i am eating it up#(which makes me realize that one of the reasons i love cinderella retellings is that there's a lot of potential for politics)#we did have a scene where she goes into the throne room and meets a strange disheveled nobleman lounging on the throne#which made me roll my eyes because you could not have had a more obvious 'meeting the ya love interest' scene#but then there's a scene where she's like 'i don't care about embroidery'#and i internally groaned#but then she's like 'but i do like the embroidery circle because it's relaxing to be away from the men for a while'#so to my delight i could cancel the 'not like other girls' alert#the queen is feminine and her social skills are presented as a vital political skill#the swearing is really stupid and out of place and brings the book down#and i know that there'll most likely be something that makes me stop reading it before the 25% mark#but i do want to give the book credit for pleasantly surprising me#i'm liking it more than i otherwise would because of all the ways i was expecting it to disappoint me

it's so goofy to see people theorizing that the current wave of really cute family-friendly queer rep is like a stepping stone to having more options when the lesbians on skins (2007-2013) would absolutely have eaten nick n charlie alive
#like obv what we deserve is a rich media landscape that offers cross-genre depictions of queer experiences#but it's still interesting how there was such a moment in the late 2000s and early 2010s where there was a lot of#very rapid progress against homophobia and transphobia in media and general culture#and then very recently this massive reactionary wave#it's weird that gendering people correctly was relatively uncontroversial when i was in college#and now the transphobia renaissance has it in the hot seat again#and by interesting i mean it's very upsetting and scary to feel like things are regressing so quickly#it feels strange that in my life specifically i'm the happiest i've been in years and also the world is going to hell#very derry girls the biggest and pettiest good and bad things in your life will live side by side and you'll have to accept it#personal nonsense#also no hate to heartstopper it's very cute and sweet it's just funny to think of how different the options were when i was that age

fellows today i learned that my grandma's dementia is going downhill faster than we expected and she might not be able to live alone much longer which means she might be moving in with my parents in the near-er future and dominos fall and she has two dogs but my parents can only take one, the small one she loves a lot, but it displaces the big mutt.... the creature and i have a rapport..... the circumstances are genuinely upsetting to me and my grandma doesnt even want to stop driving or have anyone help her with her meds or anything yet so its all theoretical but at the end of the day. my mom was like. in theory would you take the dog. and i would

Tuvok quietly noting whenever one of his children’s birthdays pass, the day he and T’Pel were married, when certain ceremonies were supposed to be held - are being held. That split-second illogical thought: Waking up and wondering if T’Pel is in the bathroom or at the mirror. Turning and expecting to see his youngest peering at him, waiting patiently for him to wake up so they can ask for a special breakfast on the day of their birth.
I think the first year or so must have been uniquely lonely, before he became used to sleeping alone.
