I would say, you should always justify [what your character is doing]. I personally don't think I'm playing a bad guy; I'm playing a person. I'm not playing a monster, or a crazy person -- what does that even mean, 'a crazy person'? Should I act crazy and start busting windows? No, I believe I need to justify everything I do. So it's really about understanding his motivation, and why he does what he does. That's what's interesting and motivating: as an actor, you get to create that world, by yourself. So it's very personal, asking yourself what motivates this person. That's the real work here, justifying why he does what he does.

What I'm really interested in is maintaining the integrity of the character, and make it so that everything he says comes from a deep place, an honest place. It needs to be true to me. That's all I'm interested in. Now for the way people are going to interpret it, I would like it if they want to kill him -- I guess that's a good thing -- but if they like him that's good too. I think less about that and more about the work I've done. Imagine you create a character, it's as if you could look them in the eyes and say "yes, you can live by yourself now, and I can walk away". See that's what it's like, as an actor: you don't necessarily wonder if people are going to like you or not, rather you ask yourself "have I been true?". And that's what motivates me more than anything.
