The first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was held on this day, 24 June, in 1978 in commemoration of International Gay Solidarity Day, and the ninth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. A parade of around 1500 people was ambushed by police, ending in 53 arrests.
43 years on, the event has now blossomed into the biggest queer festival in Australia. This year it was celebrated as part of WorldPride, and the original protesters - known as the 78ers - led 50,000 people in a Pride march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
[I mages: police arrest a young man at the 1978 march; 78ers marching at WorldPride with a rainbow, black and pink banner reading “78ers The First Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Australia; still out and proud; 1978-2023″]

MCR stop being cryptic challenge (Japan show analysis)
Ok, continuing the theory from my Oceania tour analysis post!
I honestly wasn’t expecting Gerard to keep wearing the secretary outfit for Japan but this really makes me believe that MCR is foreshadowing their rebirth. The secretary character carried through to the end of the reunion tour. We never saw a true end or ‘death’ on stage, and whilst Gerard wore more fake blood in Japan, the lack of further changes to the Secretary’s appearance suggests her fighting to live on despite the odds and succeeding, rather than truly decaying away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gerard in Tokyo (1st pic) and Osaka (2nd pic) via Punkspring
TOKYO, March 25 2023
Tumblr media
In terms of how the Japan shows continue the story from my first post (the events of 9/11 followed by the creation of MCR), I think Tokyo is focused on the creation of Bullets. Gerard carried the umbrella again at this show, which I connect with ‘destruction raining down’ when the twin towers collapsed—Gerard seeing this directly inspired him to write the first MCR song, Skylines and Turnstiles, the foundation of their first album. It’s difficult to see in the screencap above, but if you watch this video from vex_glitch you’ll see the umbrella.
Tumblr media
The drumhead message, “GEMINI” (pic by shelly19041904) can be interpreted in many ways. I believe a strong link is that MCR completed recording Bullets in Gemini season (on May 23rd 2002 according to this post from the studio it was recorded at. Other sources online also say May 27th). Their first single, Vampires Will Never Hurt You, was also released in Gemini season on May 27th 2002.
OSAKA, March 26 2023
Tumblr media
Screencap from video by hongrui_zz
Gerard was back to the briefcase rather than umbrella for the Osaka! I think the umbrella is the signifier of an important, specific event in the story they’re telling via the costume and drumheads. Melbourne 1 (the first appearance of the umbrella) was the 9/11 attacks, and Tokyo was the creation of Bullets. You could say Osaka relates to the release of Bullets (or specifically Vampires Will Never Hurt you) but I think it also leads towards the future.
Tumblr media
The drumhead for Osaka was a mirror (pic by humgumhum), and the message was not written until the encore. The mirror represents the themes of duality that surround MCR’s reunion tour. Life and death, past and future. The first part of the bands career, and now, the second. In another sense, the mirror literally reflects the audience, the fans. It portrays the connection between the fans and the band/their music which is, to some extent, the driving force that allows MCR’s success to continue.
The drumhead message, “EnDLeSS NiGHT” was of course a lyric from Vampires Will Never Hurt You—the first single, the first song to have an audience. Vampires was the only song played in the encore at Osaka, and the last song played live by MCR for now. In the final 9 shows, but especially Osaka, we keep seeing this idea of returning to the beginning. The fact that the writing on the drum was added at the encore reflects this idea that just as we think it’s the end, MCR starts again, they keep going. Therefore, as I said after Sydney, this feels like a rebirth. It feels like a second beginning—which connects back to Gemini (twins), the mirror and theme of duality.

Burning backdrop pic by linefact0800, night stars backdrop pic by superliane
I can’t discuss the backdrops/stage set design from Japan in detail since to be honest there aren't enough good photos and videos documenting it. But my broad interpretation of the flaming buildings is that they represent burning everything down and starting again. In the years leading up to their split in 2013, MCR was in decline for a variety of reasons. The break up was very much necessary—so now the beginning of a new stage of their career will (I hope) allow them to rebuild. During the Japan shows, the fires in the backdrop were put out, and it transitioned to a night sky which links to the “EnDLeSS NiGHT” drumhead—this could signify the future of My Chemical Romance.
I’m hesitant to conclude that there is a guarantee of new music. But as I’ve seen a few people theorise, perhaps they are hinting at something happening in Gemini season this year (May 21-June 21). Possibly on the dates significant to the creation and release of Bullets? Nevertheless, the reunion tour finishing does not mean the terminus of MCR’s return—nothing sums this up better than the words staring back at us when the band left the stage at Osaka:

DigiFashion Forum 2023
Hihi, sorry for being away for so long. I've been working my a*s off lately 'cause I'm helping a friend to host an online forum. The event will be live stream on Youtube on March 29, well, in 6 hrs! XD. I just don't have time to write a decent tumblr post.😑😑😑
We have invited several outstanding leaders in the industry to share their insights on digital fashion. As a veteran TS3 player, I personally find this quite interesting. What we put on our sims is now something people have their avatars wear in Metaverse and it could be something duplicating/inspired by the real fashion world or something we can never have in reality. If you find what I wrote interesting, you might wanna join the event.
Check out the official site for further details and register (a simple process to help us screen the audience on the YT steam, and it's completely free of charge!) This event is not limited to industrial professionals. Anyone wants to know more about this emerging trend is welcome to join. See you then! 😉
Speaker overview:
Leslie Holden (Co-Founder The Digital Fashion Group, Brussel/BEL)
Beata Wilczek (Founder Unfolding Strategies, Berlin/GER)

Tuesday 14th March 2023
Sydney's relationship with a raincloud overnight and today has been a close encounter. This often seems to happen to us, when all you want to do on the last day is sit out in the sunshine and wring out the maximum number of the sun's rays as possible. Well it was not to be and our feet were wet by the time we walked into the Art Gallery of NSW, original one that is. Because of our wet bunyans we were 10 minutes late for the start of the tour but we tracked the group down and tagged onto the end of it. And very informative it was too. Even some really interesting modern art! The lady introduced ideas of connections between adjacent paintings for instance. She also drew our attention to the brilliance of the curator responsible for the correlation of collections within the same space; not just age/ genre but also comparison and complimentary. A very enjoyable visit, possibly extended due to avoiding reintroducing our dry bodies to the rain again.
We needed to return to our hotel apartment so that Martine could do her own unique work in curating our suitcase contents again ready for the journey home tomorrow. We rather hope nobody notices the relaxed attitude we have towards 20kg.
Having come to terms with the cases not being as light and fluffy as they were ten weeks ago we embarked on the next event of the day, the walk down to Circular Quays to grab a meal before the culture spot of tonight, Macbeth at the Playhouse in the SOH. The Playhouse compared to the Concert Hall and the Joan Sutherland theatre is tiny, the smallest venue within the SOH and consequently quite intimate seating only 398 in a full house. The opening scene started with a bang and visual effects with dry ice set the scene and then the first line was projected, and it was an Aussie voice loud and clear. Shakespeare spoken thus was really weird. That said, they gave it some welly and the set and production was innovative. Great night out. The interval SB was not the greatest but dare I say it, it was Australian not NZ. Anyway it was a big one. Spilling out onto the Quayside afterwards it was still so warm, and you realise just how much Sydney has to offer. The atmosphere with the CBD, Bridge and SOH as the backdrop, and the lights of the cream and green late evening ferries still entering and leaving Circular Quay was as always totally bewitching and you realise you never want to leave it. Well we shall leave it tomorrow, but we would rather look at it as just being absent from it for a few months before we return. Not wanting the evening to end, we sought out a pub on the Rocks to have a small beer. We chose the oldest pub in Sydney for our custom, 1828! Not even as old as our house! Anyway, it was getting late, 9.40 phew and the security guy said it was closing soon so it will have to be a quick one!! These Sydney people sure know how to party! Then a slow walk up George back to the hotel. Great last day here, now just have to get used to the idea of the ghastly journey home starting at 13.10 tomorrow.
ps we met 'Benny' the seal who likes to park himself on the steps at the back of the Opera House and wait there till high tide. We've seen him there before. It was like meeting an old friend.
pps Last Tim Tams consumed.

Robert Greene Announcement
Signed Copies of 48 Laws, Mastery, The Daily Laws & All My Books!
A little more than a year ago, I emailed you about my then recent trip to Austin, Texas. It was just after the release of The Daily Laws, and so I went to Austin to record some podcast interviews, film some video content, and of course, spend some time with Ryan Holiday** at his bookstore, The Painted Porch.
While I was there, I signed a bunch of copies of all my books. But there were very limited quantities (just a few hundred total) and apparently many of you moved very quickly because soon after I sent that email, I started hearing from people
So I am back today with great news, just in time for the start of the new year.
I signed another batch of copies of The 48 Laws of Power, Mastery, The 33 Strategies of War, The Art of Seduction, The Laws of Human Nature, and The Daily Laws. I wasn’t able to go to The Painted Porch this time. I signed them all at home before shipping them to The Painted Porch, so again, the quantities are limited. So if you want to pick one up for yourself or as a gift for a budding strategist or master in your life, act fast!
**I am also very excited to announce: Power, Seduction, Ego and Destiny—An Evening of Conversation and Philosophy with Robert Greene & Ryan Holiday.
Ryan and I will be having two conversations (each with a post-show meet and greet). The first will be on Friday, March 10, 2023 at the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco, CA (purchase tickets here). The second will be on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA (purchase tickets here).
It's been a very long time since I have done an event like this and I'm not sure when I'll do something like this again, so I hope to see many of you there.
I wish everyone a great end to 2022 and encourage you all to start 2023 with The Daily Laws (if you haven't already) in January.
And be sure to be on the lookout for new videos coming from me on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.

Why are so many Kiwis moving to Australia from NZ?
May 29, 2024
In 2023, data from Statistics New Zealand showed a net migration loss of 13,400 people to Australia – the largest annual deficit since 2013. Moving to Australia from NZ is a trend that shows no signs of declining, with an increasing number of kiwi households making the move across the ditch as rising costs associated with living start to bite and better employment opportunities emerge.
In this article we will dive into the reasons more and more New Zealanders are deciding to pack up the house and move to Australia.
Quick Links
How many New Zealanders are moving to Australia?
Why are Kiwis choosing to move to Australia?
What are the most popular places to move to in Australia?
How many New Zealanders are moving to Australia
Net migration from New Zealand to Australia peaked at over 30,000 people per year in the year 2013. Over the past decade the numbers began to stabilise, with annual net migration figures ranging from 15,000 to 20,000.
According to Statistics New Zealand, in the year ending March 2021, the net migration of New Zealand citizens to Australia was significantly lower due to the covid pandemic. As of the year ending June 2022, the net migration from New Zealand to Australia was around 12,000 people, reflecting a recovery as travel restrictions eased and economic conditions began to improve. Last year, data from Statistics New Zealand showed a net migration loss of 13,400 people to Australia – the largest annual deficit since 2013.
Why are Kiwis choosing to move to Australia?
Kiwis are choosing to move to Australia for a number of reasons, which can be broadly categorised into economic, social, and lifestyle factors. This reflects the desire to enjoy better opportunities and a higher quality of life in Australia.
Economic Opportunities Australia offers higher wages compared to New Zealand, making it attractive for Kiwis seeking better financial prospects. Australia is also a much larger economy providing more job opportunities across various sectors, including mining, healthcare, and construction.
Ease of Migration The Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement arrangement allows New Zealand citizens to live and work in Australia without the need for a visa, simplifying the migration process. This combined with the close geographic proximity between New Zealand and Australia makes it convenient for Kiwis to move and maintain ties with family and friends back home.
Lifestyle and Climate Many parts of Australia offer a warmer climate compared to New Zealand, which can be appealing for those seeking a change in weather. Australia’s diverse natural landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities, such as beaches and national parks, attract many Kiwis who are looking to enjoy an outdoor Lifestyle.
Cost of Living While certain areas of Australia can be more expensive than New Zealand, somewhere like Sydney for example, overall the cost of living, particularly housing, is more affordable in Australia compared to major New Zealand cities like Auckland.
What are the most popular places to move to in Australia?
New Zealanders moving to Australia are favoring several destinations. These cities are favorites among New Zealanders for their economic opportunities, lifestyle advantages, and the presence of established Kiwi communities, which help new migrants settle in more easily. These are some of the most popular destinations for New Zealanders moving to Australia.
Sydney, New South Wales As Australia’s largest city, Sydney offers numerous job opportunities, particularly in finance, tech, healthcare, and education. Sydney is known for its vibrant cultural scene, beautiful beaches, and iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
Melbourne, Victoria Melbourne is famous for its arts, music, and food scenes, as well as its sporting events. The city has a strong economy with opportunities in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and creative industries.
Brisbane, Queensland Brisbane’s warm climate and outdoor lifestyle appeal to many Kiwis. The city is experiencing significant growth, offering opportunities in construction, hospitality, and services.
Perth, Western Australia Perth’s economy benefits from mining and resources industries, providing jobs in these sectors. The city is known for its relaxed lifestyle, beautiful beaches, and parks.
Gold Coast, Queensland The Gold Coast is a major tourist destination, offering jobs in tourism, hospitality, and retail. The area is famous for its beaches, surfing spots, and theme parks.
Adelaide, South Australia Adelaide is known for its lower cost of living compared to other major cities. The city has a vibrant cultural life and is known for its festivals, food, and wine regions.
Canberra, Australian Capital Territory As the capital city of Australia, Canberra offers many opportunities in government and public administration. The city is known for its high standard of living, excellent education system, and green spaces.
Hobart, Tasmania Hobart attracts those who appreciate nature, with its proximity to wilderness areas and a cooler climate. The city is seeing growth in sectors like tourism, arts, and food production.

The super welterweight division is absolutely loaded with talent and the winner of this fight will be in excellent position to face the other big names at 154-pounds. It’s the perfect fight to headline action on Prime Video on Saturday, October 19 at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando.”
“Even before his spectacular win against Jack Culcay to earn the IBF title in Germany, Bakhram made it clear that he wanted Tim Tszyu next,” said Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events. “He also said he wanted the matchup to happen in the U.S. so that everyone could see him fight, so I’m really happy that this deal came together to take place in front of a wide audience on Prime Video. Both of these fighters tend to come forward and engage and I would not be surprised if this turns out to be the Fight of the Year.”
“There are very few fighters in the world that can endure what Tim went through in his last fight and come out bigger, better and stronger than before,” said George Rose, CEO of No Limit Boxing. “Tim Tszyu is that guy. He lives to fight and has a warrior spirit that is completely unbreakable. You won’t want to miss this. He is about to remind everyone why he is the best 154 pounder in the world on October 19.”
Tszyu (24-1, 17 KOs) lost his WBO 154-Pound World Title in his last outing, as he took an incidental elbow from Sebastian Fundora in round three that opened up one of the most grisly cuts in recent boxing memory, and which severely hampered Tszyu on his way to losing a narrow split-decision on March 30.
The 29-year-old son of International Boxing Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu, he came into that fight off a red-hot 2023 campaign that saw him elevated to world champion at 154-pounds while defeating former world champion Tony Harrison, top contender Brian Mendoza and former title challenger Carlos Ocampo. A native of Sydney, Australia, Tszyu made his U.S debut against U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha in March 2022, earning a unanimous decision. Tszyu grew up playing soccer, but soon gravitated toward boxing. The decision led to him following in the legendary footsteps of his father, Kostya, who was an undisputed 140-pound champion.
“At this level, you have to take everyone out and Bakhram is the next guy standing in my way,” said Tszyu. “The world knows me and they know what I’m about. I’m thankful to my team for putting me in this position to prove why I’m still the man at 154 pounds. Bakhram has what I want and I plan on taking it from him in spectacular fashion. It’s time to become a two-time world champion.”
Now residing in Oxnard, California, the Russian Murtazaliev (22-0, 16 KOs) joined the ranks of world champion in his last outing as he looks to make his first title defense on October 19. Murtazaliev defeated Jack Culcay on his home turf of Germany in April of this year to win the IBF title with a dramatic 11th-round stoppage.
The 31-year-old has fought professionally since 2014 and debuted stateside in November 2016 with a knockout over the previously unbeaten Botirsher Obidov. Murtazaliev continued his climb with an impressive three-win 2019 campaign that culminated in a unanimous decision over Jorge Fortea in November that earned him the mandatory slot with the IBF. He’d go on to add four more victories between September 2020 and December 2022 before stepping into the title showdown against Culcay.
“I’m extremely happy and excited to defend my world title on Prime Video against a strong opponent like Tim Tszyu,” said Murtazaliev. “I just want Tim to be in the best shape possible and not get any injuries so we can give this fight to the fans.”

Call to uninvite PM from queer events after broken promises

Call to uninvite PM from queer events after broken promises
Tumblr media
Just.Equal Australia has declared Anthony Albanese should not be invited to LGBTIQA+ events or parades after broken promises to the community, including a shocking call on LGBTIQA+ inclusion in the next national Census.
Yesterday, it was confirmed the Albanese Government has vetoed counting LGBTIQA+ people in the 2026 Census, breaking a pre-election promise.
The decision came just weeks after the government dumped a key reform to protect LGBTIQA+ staff and students in religious schools from discrimination.
Just.Equal’s Rodney Croome declared, “Mr Albanese should not be invited to any LGBTIQA+ event or parade until he counts us in the Census and protects LGBTIQA+ teachers and students from discrimination.
“He may have marched across the Sydney Harbour Bridge for WorldPride last year, but in the eyes of many LGBTIQA+ Australians he has now pulled up the draw bridge to equality.”
‘Deep betrayals of trust’
LGBTIQA+ organizations, who’d worked for years on counting us in the next Census, found out about the government’s decision in media reports on Sunday.
Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh confirmed that day there would be no change.
“While the Australian Bureau of Statistics tests changes from time to time, it’s the government’s decision that there will be no change to the topics in the next Census,” he said.
The Australian Labor Party’s 2023 national platform argued LGBTIQ+ Aussies should be counted in the census. The policy platform also committed to ensuring the 2026 count gathers that data.
“The decision not to include us in the Census shows that in this Government’s eyes, we don’t count,” Rodney Croome said.
“Last year the Federal Government funded the development of a national LGBTIQA+ health strategy. But now it’s hobbled its own initiative by vetoing its main data source.
“Exclusion from the Census, plus the failure to protect LGBTIQA+ people from discrimination in religious schools, are deep betrayals of the trust of the LGBTIQA+ community.”
Religious discrimination reform dumped
On religious discrimination reform, Labor shelved proposed draft bills after repeatedly promising change, including before the 2022 election. An Australian Law Reform Commission report also recommended the law change.
At that time, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese blamed the Coalition for the failure to reach an agreement.
“I don’t intend to engage in a partisan debate when it comes to religious discrimination,” he said earlier this month.
But Greens LGBTQIA+ spokesperson Stephen Bates argued Labor had refused to work with the Greens to pass the legislation.
Rodney Croome said a survey of LGBTIQA+ voters after the last election showed 21% shifted from Labor to the Greens, teals and independents because of Labor’s support for Scott Morrison’s anti-LGBTQIA+ Religious Discrimination Bill.
“Mr Albanese says he wants to promote social cohesion and prevent division. But by pushing LGBTIQA+ Australians back into the statistical closet he is doing exactly the opposite,” Rodney Croome said.
“The Government’s betrayal of our community will inevitably mean Federal Labor will lose yet more votes of LGBTIQA+ people at the next election.”

Unravelling the future of AccounTech Sydney Xerocon 2023 🌐
Today, I’ve something exciting to share with you. You know how you get excited when a lost Beatle or Nirvana track is found, well the extraordinary Alexi Boyd uncovered the audio of a panel discussion from Sydney Xerocon PreXerocon 2023. I honestly thought I’d never hear it again, and then mid March she sent me a copy - making me a very happy podcaster cause I get to share it with you. The panel discussion was held at the beautiful Hinchcliff House at Circular Quay. Unfortunately the room was a little noisy on the day of the event. However much to my surprise the audio quality is really quite good.
The topic for discussion was “Unravelling the future of AccounTech” moderated by Alexi Boyd.
If you are a regular listener you will know, I value bringing diversity to these tech conversations.
The moderator Alexi Boyd ran a BAS and Bookkeeping business for 8 years. She is the Radio Show host of Small Biz Matters and now works in policy strategy and government relations. This led her to take the conversation in an interesting direction, consumer data rights and restrictions on data and innovation and the differences between data protection laws in Europe, UK, and Australia.
This event was the first time Sabby Gill, the new Dext formerly Receipt Bank CEO, had spoken in Australia. Sabby had literally just got off the plane, so he brought his overseas perspective,
Extraordinary diversity in this conversation, London based Sabby Gill brought an overseas perspective, as well as his 35 years in the UK technology sector. Aly Garrett is a modern, technology savvy accountant, from South Australia. She represented accountants, their small business clients, and living outside the major Australian cities, brought a regional perspective to the conversation.
Roger Gregg brought that unique energy that comes with being a Fintech founder. He also brought his expensive knowledge of the hospitality and brewing industry, which certainly flavoured the conversation.
I shall add in some recent relevant news, congratulations are in order, 10 months after recording this, it has been announced that the Access Group Has Entered Into an Agreement to Acquire Pioneering AP Automation Provider, Lightyear
Let me fill you in on a bit of a backstory. The Gregg brothers were one of the original App partners, with their solution InvitBox. I’m thinking within the first ten years? InvitBox won Xero emerging app partner in 2013. Then in May 2014 Intuit acquired InvitBox. The very blue boys turned green overnight. Several years later, in quite an unprecedented move, they bought InvitBox back from Intuit for a single dollar! And relaunched as LightYear.
Here we are ten years later, and they have sold again, this time to The Access Group.

round up // MARCH 24
Tumblr media
This March Round Up is one of the most media-diverse I’ve ever published. Two books! Two miniseries! One museum! One telecast! And somehow, most of them eventually come back to the same topic: movies.
Now that the Oscars have named their 2023 victors (“My eyes see Oppenheimer!!!”), it feels like the 2024 movie year has finally started, and one major Awards Season contender is already out. (Keep reading to see if it is Kong x Godzilla!) Three of my top 10 picks this month are new films, but this brief pause between Awards Season and summer blockbusters means I have time for indulgent activities like reading books and playing Turner Classic Movies roulette on the DVR. May lulls like these between your busy seasons be just as enjoyable with these pop culture faves…
March Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
1. The Fury by Alex Michaelides (2024)
You know it’s a good book when it’s already past your bedtime, you see that you have 100 pages left, and still say, “Yeah, there’s no way I’m not finishing this tonight.” I made this my January Book of the Month because it sounded like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (my favorite movie of 2022), but this doesn’t center on a Benoit Blanc-style detective. At the center is a charming, unreliable narrator (one I kept picturing as John Mulaney) recounting the murder of a starlet (whom I kept picturing as Carole Lombard) while on vacation with her friends and family. I read 75% of this murder mystery set on a private Greek in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down!
Tumblr media
2. Road House (2024)
Thank goodness Jake Gyllenhaal seems to be losing interest in prestige projects because he’s best when he’s a lil’ crazy. That’s just one reason this Road House is even more fun than the original. Read my full review for ZekeFilm. Crowd: 10/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
3. Barbie: The World Tour by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (2024)
I have referenced Barbie in almost every Round Up since it came out, and I'm not slowing down now. This new book from Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal catalogs each of her Barbie press tour looks inspired the doll’s historical closet, giving side-by-side comparisons the head-to-toe looks on the doll and on Robbie. With designers’ sketches and insight into how Robbie and Mukamal made their sartorial choices, it makes for a gorgeous coffee table book.
Tumblr media
4. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Big things go smash! I stopped by KMOV to chat about the newest Godzilla/Kong team-up with Joshua Ray, which won’t send you away smarter but probably in a better mood. Watch the full review. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 4/10
youtube
5. SNL Round Up
I’m noticing my Saturday Night Live Round Ups are shorter this year, which is probably thanks to a greener cast. But I am always rooting for Studio 8H, and these three were worth re-watching and sharing in the text thread:
“Detectives” (4913 with Sydney Sweeney)
“Loud Table” (4913)
“Moulin Rouge” (4914 with Josh Brolin)
More March Crowd-Pleasers: Morgan Freeman, Keanu Reeves, and Rachel Weisz get caught up in a murder plot surrounding a new energy source in Chain Reaction (1996) // Before Zodiac, Kurt Russell was a Miami Journal reporter investigating a serial killer in The Mean Season (1985)
March Critic Picks
Tumblr media
1. Art in Bloom at the St. Louis Art Museum
Every spring SLAM invites floral artists to create arrangements inspired by pieces in the museum’s collection. As always, this event inspires me to look at works I’ve seen dozens of times in new ways, and I always discover flowers that make me wish my thumbs were more verdant.
Tumblr media
2. Dune: Part Two (2024)
Dune is weird, but I love that it hasn’t stopped it from sourcing an endless supply of memes. Even more, I love that a vision as grand as this one has taken root in pop culture, that a new crop of young actors are catapulting movie stardom into the next generation, and that this epic is as concerned with philosophy and the craft of filmmaking as much as blockbuster-style spectacle. Crowd: 8.5/10 // 9/10
Tumblr media
3. The Sixties (2014)
And now I’ve finally finished CNN’s decade miniseries. Though these series aren’t revolutionary—The Sixties episodes include “The War in Vietnam,” “The British Invasion,” and “The Space Race”—they provide more depth and insight than a Wikipedia article with plenty of interviews and primary source footage. (And perhaps too much insight with an 85-minute episode about the JFK assassination, which is steeped in more conspiracy theories than are worth mentioning.) Each of CNN's decade series has impressed me with the connections drawn to today, and The Sixties is no exception.

4. The 96th Oscars
It’s a treat when the consensus is that the Oscars ceremony was…good? It’s been a few years since that was the popular opinion! Not only were the winners a pretty solid selection, but most of the bits worked, most of the musical performances were solid, and it finished…early? These were my favorite moments during the brisk evening:
Past Best Supporting Actress winners celebrate this year’s nominees and winner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph
Past Best Supporting Actor winners celebrate this year’s nominees and winner, Robert Downey Jr.
Past Best Actor winners celebrate this year’s nominees and winner, Cillian Murphy
Past Best Actress winners celebrate this year’s nominees and winner, Emma Stone (even though I was rooting for Lily Gladstone)
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito rib Michael Keaton and present Best Visual Effects to the charming Godzilla Minus One crew
John Cena demonstrates the value of our Best Costume nominees
Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera present Best Documentary (though they’re not always sure which films are fact and which are fiction)
Ryan Gosling (and many more Kens) perform “I’m Just Ken”
“My eyes see Oppenheimer!!”
Tumblr media
5. The Power of Film (2024)
Onetime UCLA professor Howard Suber walks us through some of the most popular and memorable films in history in this new Turner Classic Movies miniseries. He explains why they’ve passed the test of time, analyzing storytelling motifs and themes like destiny, love, heroes vs. villains, and paradox. I’m still thinking about some of his insights (e.g. there are no good characters, only good character relationships), and I compiled the 275 films he uses as examples on in a Letterboxd list.
More March Critic Picks: A Letter to Three Wives (1949) is a light-on-its-feet melodrama about three women wondering which of their husbands is about to leave them // Naughty Marietta (1935) pulls off the princess-with-a-mistaken-identity rom-com trope with a dash of music // A Double Life (1947) is a killer thriller (pun intended) about the dangers of taking inspiration from Othello in real life // Before Mr. Deeds, Gary Cooper was a more earnest small town simpleton who stumbles into millions in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) // Susan Hayward more than earns her Oscar for her performance based on a semi-true story about a woman on death row in I Want to Live! (1958) // Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor didn’t make me cry like the remake does, but their relationship in Father of the Bride (1950) is still sweetly moving 70+ years later // Even if it didn’t star Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall, Written on the Wind (1956) would still look phenomenal because it’s directed by Douglas Sirk, but thank goodness they both get to cook in his Technicolor vision
Also in March…
I chipped in on a ZekeFilm piece on the Oscar-nominated live action shorts with a paragraph about Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”
I also reviewed the perfectly pleasant Kung Fu Panda 4 for ZekeFilm…
…and for KMOV, where I also made some Oscar predictions before the big night.
Photo credits: The Fury, Barbie. Art in Bloom my own. All others IMDb.com.
