Wednesday, May 31: Sirenia, “Nomadic”

Outside of Nightwish and Within Temptation, symphonic operatic goth metal didn’t really take off in a big way.  But it drew enough of a crowd that a whole bunch of bands not only sprouted up but stuck around, with Norway’s Sirenia now 11 albums deep.  “Nomadic” didn’t deviate from the rest of 1977, or pretty much anything else they’ve done, so it offered a representative example of both the band and their chosen subgenre: Emmanuelle Zoldan’s vocals were simultaneously haunting, melodramatic and cheesy, but they ably captured the mood Sirenia was going for, while the accompanying music had a representative balance of heaviness via power chords and moody bombast.  The primary distinction between “Nomadic” and more recent Nightwish would be a lack of concept and more generally down to earth approach, which for this particular sound was actually a bit refreshing.

Nightwish verlängern den Vertrag bei Nuclear Blast

Nightwish erneuern ihren Vertrag bei Nuclear Blast um einen weltweiten Multi-Album Deal. Dies sind doch genau die Nachrichten die ich gerne lese. Hatte ich doch nach der Ankündigung, dass sie das neue Album, welches irgendwann einmal erscheinen soll, fertig gestellt ist es ja schon, nicht betouren werden, etwas Angst. Angst deshalb weil für mich als Liebhaber der finnischen Symphonicrocker dies schon fast so geklungen hatte, als wäre nach diesem Album Schluss. Diese Angst ist nun ein wenig gedämpft und ich gönne der Band die Pause auch einmal nicht in diesem Tour - Album - Tour Zyklus leben zu müssen, sondern sich auch um private Dinge wie auch dem Nachwuchs kümmern zu können. Nightwish bleiben also auch nach 20 Jahren erfolgreichen Jahren dem Label Nuclear Blast treu. Mastermind Tuomas Holopainen meint dazu; "Vor 20 Jahren begann unsere gemeinsame Reise mit Nuclear Blast, und nun ist die Zeit gekommen, unser Gelübde zu erneuern. Lana Del Rey - Gods and Monsters (Cover by Alexandrite) Happy Halloween, everyone! 🎃👻🍂 Here's a chilling legend for you: They say that if a carnival performer takes the stage on Halloween, a malevolent spirit named Edward Mordrake will appear, claiming a new soul for his otherworldly circus of the damned. Or at least, that's what "American Horror Story: Freak Show" would have us believe😉 I'm a huge fan of this TV series, and season 4 is one of my all-time favorites. The scene where Jessica Lange performs Lana Del Rey's "Gods and Monsters" is absolutely mesmerizing. This song hit me hard, and I knew right then and there that I'd one day create my own cover of this haunting song. Fortunately, I had a break between writing and arranging songs for our new album and recording them, so I seized the opportunity to work on this song. It took me over a month to craft the virtual environment, film the scenes, and composite the shots for the video.
