Podcast Rec - Syntax
So, having gone through the podcasts of dubious quality that are Tanis and The Last Movie, I found myself something new and actually good to listen to. It is, of course, about a snarky academic who is in way over his head.
I know. It's a pattern in my listening. Jon Sims, from the Magnus Archives. Andrew Moss, in Out of Place. Even - god help me - Nic Silver in the PRA podcasts. (NOTE: Fuck you, Terry Miles. You need to learn how to write a fucking ending instead of dicking around with your audience's expectations.)
The main difference here is that the academic in question, one Silas Caldwell, and the people around him communicate and support each other.
It begins with Silas being recruited by an organization called VINCULA to translate a book. He ends up as part of a scientific team put together to explore the alternate dimensions (or possibly other planets) that became accessible when he opened a breach in reality using the information in the book he was translating.
I'm nearly all the way through the first season, and I like the adventure parts of it, as well as the question of just what VINCULA's motives are, but my favorite part is the relationship between Silas and the team's leader, Cassius.
TBH, I have been actively shipping these two since the second episode, where Cassius was introduced. There's been a low-key running plot about how there is apparently a couple amongst the team. Cassius and Silas are both dying of curiosity to know just who they are, and everyone else is just standing back and waiting for them to figure it out.
This is basically the same thing I did with Midnight Burger after I started listening to that. I am grabbing you by the shirt, shaking you until your teeth rattle, and yelling, "You HAVE to listen to this."
If nothing else, the first thing I did after I realized I was hooked was come on here to Tumblr to see what kind of fan discourse was going on.
There was basically nothing. Two fanart pieces and a lot of stuff from the creators, and that was it.
Honestly, I want someone to listen to this with me. This is a good podcast, and it would be nice to have someone to freak out with when something big happens in it.

Syntax livebloggiiiiing @twinstrangersp
also some speculation
The angler snake is cool sounding. I love that its basically just zooming around in a canyon
MAN so J's brain changing like. Physically. And the way the breaches are described as being like snail shells. And the podcast art looking like a diagram of one of the bones in your ear
I'm just saying, could J be becoming a Keeper? A breach himself? Is the great cost the texts talking about the Keepers' lives? Do they die to become the next world?
Are the worlds their own minds? And thats why they vary so greatly?
I am chewing aggressively on these thoughts I hope you all enjoy them

Me drawing more Syntax fanart?? Yeah thats not shocking...
Had to draw everyones favourite Bird Bait, specifically based on a description given to me for Silas' appearance during college. I do find it funny that despite my favourite character being Cassius, I draw Silas the most.
Tumblr media
Im actually happy with how this has turned out. Recently, I have been having to learn to draw with my left hand and its pushed me to just generally improve my art. I think my main focus on things to fix is how I dras shoes, cause those shoes are questionable...
I love this podcast so much that 10/10 would recommend it. Although it has made me cry too many times.

Fiction Podcast of the week:
Syntax
(by Twin Strangers Production)
Impression (so far): kinda like The Magnus Archives meets Annihilation (the book, not the movie) - in a good way!
Themes: sometimes tense/spooky/scary, bit of Sci-fi, bit of action, and a lot of exploration of a strange dangerous wilderness, backed by a questionable organisation. Believable team bonding (maybe future found family??), natural character interactions :)
Voices: Has one main character but the show is carried by a core cast. So far I've been able to follow the story without issues, despite me normally struggling to recognise several voices. If it really matters who is talking they do a good job of telling you who speaks.
Length: Episodes are between 30-60 mins. As of August 2023 there are 27 episodes, crowdfunding for the next season was just announced.
Overall/other commentary: I'm on episode 10 so far and I haven't been this exited about character interaction, pacing, ongoing plot threads and the frequency with which each of them is continued in a long time!! It's easy to follow but exiting/mystery driven enough to not get boring or predictable. Characters acknowledge the recording and why they verbally describe things more than would be normal, and the show has a good hook for why that is. It feels natural and makes sense :) The main character is a linguist and we get mythology/records of an unknown past civilisation which is absolutely my personal highlight whenever it comes up!

12.) what’s a podcast you wish more people listened to?
syntax podcast!!!!!! It’s so good and so underrated! It’s about this linguist who’s supposed to translate an old book but then he’s thrown into this research group to discover an unknown world. It’s just sooooo interesting!
I also wish more people would listen to the cellar letters and red valley. I know that they have a certain amount of following but both of these deserve so much more! Especially cellar letters, that one is actually insane and if y’all gave it a chance you would understand what I mean!!
