Podcast Rec - Syntax
So, having gone through the podcasts of dubious quality that are Tanis and The Last Movie, I found myself something new and actually good to listen to. It is, of course, about a snarky academic who is in way over his head.
I know. It's a pattern in my listening. Jon Sims, from the Magnus Archives. Andrew Moss, in Out of Place. Even - god help me - Nic Silver in the PRA podcasts. (NOTE: Fuck you, Terry Miles. You need to learn how to write a fucking ending instead of dicking around with your audience's expectations.)
The main difference here is that the academic in question, one Silas Caldwell, and the people around him communicate and support each other.
It begins with Silas being recruited by an organization called VINCULA to translate a book. He ends up as part of a scientific team put together to explore the alternate dimensions (or possibly other planets) that became accessible when he opened a breach in reality using the information in the book he was translating.
I'm nearly all the way through the first season, and I like the adventure parts of it, as well as the question of just what VINCULA's motives are, but my favorite part is the relationship between Silas and the team's leader, Cassius.
TBH, I have been actively shipping these two since the second episode, where Cassius was introduced. There's been a low-key running plot about how there is apparently a couple amongst the team. Cassius and Silas are both dying of curiosity to know just who they are, and everyone else is just standing back and waiting for them to figure it out.
This is basically the same thing I did with Midnight Burger after I started listening to that. I am grabbing you by the shirt, shaking you until your teeth rattle, and yelling, "You HAVE to listen to this."
If nothing else, the first thing I did after I realized I was hooked was come on here to Tumblr to see what kind of fan discourse was going on.
There was basically nothing. Two fanart pieces and a lot of stuff from the creators, and that was it.
Honestly, I want someone to listen to this with me. This is a good podcast, and it would be nice to have someone to freak out with when something big happens in it.

We have an incentive for our crowdfunding, everyone 👀

Plus, this is some more ~lore~ content for you to enter Season 2 with!

movies/TV/documentaries you should watch:
MOVIES:
•Pride (about the miners’ strike in England during the Thatcher era and the group of gay londoners who raised money in solidarity for them. it’s a feel good movie) Amazon Prime (sorry I know, you could probably buy it on YouTube)
•Sorry to Bother You (about a black telemarketer named Cassius who learns that to succeed in his new job he has to use his “white voice”, and when he ultimately becomes successful, must decide between his own success and standing in solidarity with his coworkers who are striking. dark comedy, easily one of my favorite movies) Hulu
TV SHOWS:
•Sex Education (English Netflix series about a teenager who becomes his school’s unofficial sex therapist, it’s super funny and has a ton of LGBTQ representation) Netflix only
•Mrs. America (biographical, about the women’s liberation movement in the 70s and the fight for the equal rights amendment, follows people like Phyllis Schlafley and Gloria Steinem) Hulu only
•Pose (based on the documentary Paris is Burning, about the Harlem ballroom scene in the 80s, follows a house mother and her house who compete in balls, most of the characters are black or latinx and have actually competed in ballroom in their real lives. drama, super good) Netflix only
•Never Have I Ever (a comedy written by Mindy Kahling about an Indian American girl named Devi who navigates grief and her everyday life. it’s super funny and it’s definitely more of a teen comedy but really anyone could like it) Netflix only
•Derry Girls (set in Derry, Ireland during the Troubles and follows a group of catholic school girls [plus one English guy], it is so funny and their accents are the cherry on top. it would help to have a decent history of Irish culture but even if you don’t it’s still super funny [you might just miss some of the jokes]) Netflix only
DOCUMENTARIES:
•The True Cost (about the fast fashion industry and it’s impacts on the environment, workers, and consumers. super interesting and a doc I think everyone should watch) Amazon prime
•Betting on Zero (about MLM companies but more specifically Herbalife and it’s impact on its sellers. follows this c*pitalist that bets on it sinking in stocks) Netflix
•Stink! (about chemicals in our everyday products’ fragrances, how dangerous they are and the ways the government avoids telling consumers about them) Netflix
•Rotten (series about the dark side of major industries such as sugar, avacados, and water. super in-depth about how each impacts us and it’s impact on the environment and workers) Netflix
•13th (about the way the prison industrial complex targets black Americans and the way that prisons manipulate the 13th amendment to institute modern day slavery) Netflix
•Paris is Burning (classic documentary that everyone [especially in the LGBTQ community] should watch. it is about the Harlem ballroom scene and why it’s so important for queer youth) Netflix and YouTube
•Crip Camp (about Camp Janed, a summer camp for disabled youth and its affects on the disablitly rights movement that fought for the Americans with Disablities Act, mainly follows Judy Heumann and how she organized sit ins and road blockages to pressure the government into making public accommodations accessible) Netflix
Feel free to add any

Face Claim: Conor Leslie
Love Interest: Jude Abernathy
Bellona Plinth knew why she was reaped. She knew that her last name was a death sentence, and she knew whose fault that was. Raised by her grandmother, on stories about her Great Uncle Sejanus, she knew exactly what the President really was. Her great-grandparents might have believed in poor, sweet Coriolanus, enough for him to inherit half of their fortune and to arrange a failed betrothal to their only daughter. But Livia had always seen through him, running back to district 2 and getting pregnant to avoid her parents’ choice of fate.
But President Snow had never forgotten Livia’s slight, nor her claims that he was someone connected to Sejanus’ death, and so sixty years later, Bellona paid the price. She wasn’t meant to survive the games, that much was for certain, but she was a survivor at heart, and soon earned herself the title of Victor.
But President Snow did not give up so easily, and when the Third Quarter Quell is announced, Bellona knows that only one name will be put to the reaping. President Snow might see it at his second chance to end the Plinth legacy, but if Bellona is going to lose, then she will make absolutely certain to take him down with her.
After all, Snow always falls eventually.

Concordia Snow: the Capitol’s Princess, the beautiful and charming granddaughter of President Snow. To Panem at large, Concordia was the perfect little Capitolite. Always in fashion, polite and obedient but clever and never missing a party, completely devoted to her grandfather. Only a very small handful of people knew better, knew that her pretty smile hid sharp teeth and a calculating brain. The Capitol’s best kept secret, really, that Concordia Snow was a rebel in disguise. But when the 74th Hunger Games come around, everything changes. Not because of the volunteer from 12, nor because of the star crossed lovers, but because the night before the Games, Concordia is told of her impending marriage to Seneca Crane. With no intention of becoming the Chief Gamemaker’s bride, it seems that the time has come for Concordia to play her hand – a hand that will set off a chain of events no one could have ever seen coming.

Name: Ginny Cresta
Story: Safe & Sound
District: 4
Face Claim: Kat McNamara
Love Interest: Finnick Odair
Victor of the 73rd Hunger Games, Ginny Cresta truly believed that the Games had taken everything from her.  Her sister’s sanity, her brother’s life, her ability to sleep without nightmares, her innocence, and whatever farce of a childhood she’d had left, all lost to the arenas; there was nothing left for her to lose.  Or so she’d thought, until the Quarter Quell was announced, and Annie’s name was drawn.  Even as she volunteered, as she boarded the train back to hell, all that was running through her mind was the very first thing that Finnick had said to her when she left the arena.
No one wins the games, Gin, not until Snow is done with us.  Once you’re reaped, you play until you die.

Tumblr media
Name: Hollis Everdeen
Story: The Hanging Tree
Series: The Old Therebefore
District: 12 / Covey
Face Claim: Zoey Deutch
Love Interest: Finnick Odair
Hollis Everdeen thought that her life had ended with the 73rd Hunger Games.  Her heart stopped when Prim’s name was called, and broke when Katniss volunteered to take her place.  But somehow, against all odds, Katniss came home, and Hollis let herself breathe again.  At least, until the next reaping, for the 74th Games.  Haymitch had warned them that Snow would want to see Katniss punished for her trick with the berries, but still, Hollis had never expected to hear her own name called out.
Tumblr media
Name: Honoria Adrasteia
Story: Valley Of The Dolls
District: 1 / Capitol
Face Claim: Anya Taylor Joy
Love Interest: Cadmus Ariston
Honoria Adresteia’s life ended the day her name was called as the female tribute for district two.  It was a strange year, so many peacekeepers in place to prevent any volunteers, and so thirteen year old Honoria held her head high and walked into her certain doom. Honoria Adresteia was not supposed to survive the arena.  Not only was she thirteen and facing the best that the careers had to offer, but every facet of the games felt designed to put her at a disadvantage.  But she was smart, and managed to hide herself in a tree from the final five until the final two.  She should have died, then.  Her district partner climbing the tree to kill her, Honoria afraid and unarmed and starving.  But she didn’t.  A sponsor saved her, sending a gift to her would-be-killer and knocking him from the tree to his death.  She barely had time to read the note before she was being brought back to the Capitol, a victor now and forever, but she could see a drawing of a heart and the letter T.  And then she’s gone, and she’s being crowned the victor of the games, and somehow, Honoria got to live. But the life of a victor isn’t all glory, and Honoria will soon find that dying in the arena would have been a kinder fate. Rather than returning home to her district, Honoria would live full time in the Capitol, away from anything she ever knew.  She’s given a manager, almost a friend, in the form of Cadmus Ariston.  He took care of her, helped her adjust, made life bearable.  And for the first few months, everything was almost okay.  Until the day that Cadmus sits her down and tells her exactly what President Snow has planned for her.

(sorry @vancityreynolds , I still love ya’ man! Unless the internet is wrong, then…disregard) The sign itself is based on the scales of #justice or #Themis the Goddess of divine law and custom, and was actually once a part of the neighboring #constellation of #scorpio called #chalae or claws. In this version, some time in the second century (AD/CE), the Romans hailed the constellation as signifying the important time of year where the day and night were in balance (which also happens during the Vernal #Equinox in Spring which brings us to the next version…) In one source, Libra is associated with the ‘claiming’ of Persephone, by Pluto/Hades. It is said his golden chariot was the symbol of Libra, which basically heralded the turning point in the seasons, or the cycle of nature. Our final origin, is brought in part by theologians, who claim Libra is connected to the same legend as Virgo (see last months post for that one), and the star/virgin Goddess of Justice, #Astraea #Autumnalequinox #mythology #astrology #horoscope #vectorart #adobeillustrator #adobephotoshop #artist #art #illustration #illustrator #illustratorsoninstagram #digitalart #digitalartist #digitalillustration #digitalpainting #design #stilesofart @adobe @photoshop @_adobeillustrator_ @procreate https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci216opJmzQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I almost skipped over this with a ‘good for them’ but it points to a wider problem with racial history in the United States. brown and black characters in American TV shows usually have white-sounding names because those were the names given to their great-grandparents by their white slave-masters. Hence Malcolm X refusing to use the last name he inherited from his father because it wasn’t his true name but  the name of the white slave-owner who gave it to his ancestors and Cassius Clay changing his name to Muhammad Ali because it better reflected his roots than the slave-name he was born with. There are plenty of ‘Freeman’s and ‘Freedman’s in the Northern US because who on earth upon buying their freedom or having it given to them would want to keep a name their parents or grandparents had been given by a slave-owner.
Chidi Anagonye had a proper African name because he was born in Senegal while the other main black character on the show Simone Garnett had a relatively anglocized one because she was Australian and Australians, like Americans and Brits are (historically) big fans of erasing other cultures in favour of those brought in by white colonists.
The Al-Jamil family (judging by their wealth and status) were probable descended from East-African Indians who were held up as models of cultural integration when they arrived in Britain in the 70s and 80s (compared to the actual Indians and Pakistanis who had already lived there for a generation having arrived after the partition of India and who were often the victims of racism and poor employment prospects) because they’d essentially been groomed by the British in India to become a sort of purpose-made ruling class for the African states that the British also held onto before the empire was dissolved. So while these particular Indian migrants kept their names they usually swapped their traditional clothing for smart suits, their languages for English and their religion for Thatcherism.
So yes, it’s admirable and more shows should do it but the characters names reflect their cultural heritage and highlight a world in which rich nations have been multi-racial for far longer than most assume, if the writers didn’t understand this perfectly they wouldn’t have named the main Asian character Jason Mendoza.

Interview with Royal Blood
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ben Thatcher of Royal Blood over Zoom video!
Royal Blood release their long-awaited third album Typhoons today via Warner Records. The four album singles and videos ("Trouble’s Coming,""Typhoons," "Limbo," and "Boilermaker") leading up to the album have created an overwhelming global impact calling Typhoons the duo’s best record to date. Upon the album’s release, Royal Blood have already accrued over 50 million streams and the biggest US airplay of their career crashing into the Rock and ALT charts last fall and consistently raising for the past 30 weeks to the #1 position.
When Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher sat down to talk about making a new album, they knew what they wanted to achieve. It involved a conscious return to their roots, back when they had made music that was influenced by Daft Punk, Justice, and Philippe Zdar of Cassius. It also called for a similar back-to-basics approach to what had made their self-titled debut album so thrilling, visceral and original.
The album bursts into breathless attack when the fierce metallic grooves of “Who Needs Friends” hits an early visceral peak. Royal Blood further reference their fresh array of influences by deploying vocoder-effected vocals on “Million & One” and evoking the sound of a hyper aggressive, Prince influence on “Mad Visions.” It ends with a final surprise in the shape of the stark piano ballad “All We Have Is Now,” a vulnerable and revealing reminder to live in the moment.
That new approach manifested itself in the duo’s decision to produce the majority of Typhoons themselves. Already established as a fan favourite during their 2019 UK live shows, the studio version of “Boilermaker” was produced by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, the two bands having first connected when Royal Blood supported them on a massive North American tour. Meanwhile, the multiple Grammy Award-winner Paul Epworth produced “Who Needs Friends” and contributed additional production to “Trouble’s Coming.”

Episode 42
Under the "keep reading" because spoilers?
So the picture is starting to come together. I'm getting lost on which timeline is when but after reading the transcript (thanks for uploading them!) it's straightened up: there was just one line from the present one, the rest is still the "past" tense.
So in present, Cass, Lizzy, Alyx (?), June snd Evelyn were taken under the Thatcher's wing. What's up with Yanus and the research? Are the Breaches still open or did the followers of those who came from the Breaches take care of it? Sure Cassius' father is trying to research the new worlds mysteries further (or so it seemed, I need to relisten), but I didn't catch anything about any new expeditions. And apparently Silas is still with the followers. When did Cass get their amnesia? When they went with Theta this time?..
Back to the past present tense.
FINALLY Lizzy is getting the appreciation she deserves! A HUGE YAY! 💜 (and the support in the time of self-doubt, she's finally allowed herself to let some control go, double yay)
Evelyn's case is getting more clear. Those really are magic mushrooms huh. It would have been a blast if they were also somewhat intelligent. Like, we know our mushrooms are something. Not thoroughly researched yet but they are already interesting. Wonder what the otherworldly ones could be like!
Why is Beckett being all cautious all of a sudden? Cass' father steps into the picture? Or for some other reason?
I'm on the fence regarding this followers organization - so far, just like Silis rightfully noticed, those organizations were getting them nothing but trouble. These ones seem to be the "good guys" caring for everyone's collective good, but eh. We'll see. I like Finley tho. Despite the whole situation feeling a lot like the "good cop, bad cop" one with Nico and Lief being the bad ones, they don't seem to be playing mind games, which is much appreciated. And the team really needed someone optimistic and upbeat for a long time, now that even the ones who were excited the most like Alyx or Lizzy turned rather morbid. Lizzy lost her right to yap about Silas dampening the mood, not with the way she "cheered up" Evelyn, sorry! Same with J - he used to be pretty lighthearted but turned pessimistic and got lost for good in the end. Finley sounds helpful in this department and overall.
What secrets does June keep?

E Kagge sa come farlo.» - Los Angeles Review of Books
e raggiungere i propri obiettivi
Javier Zanetti
Editore: Mondadori

As the light breaks this morning we enter the #Autumnalequinox or #fall We begin the suns journey through #Libra , astrology’s most organized sign, and also the most likely to suffer from OCD. #Libra is an #air sign ruled by the venerated #Venus. As for our litany or Libras, well, they include… Kim Kardashian & Cardi B 🤑 @kimkardashian @iamcardib Eminem 🎧 @eminem Zac Efron 🎭@zacefron Will Smith 🎬 🎤 @willsmith Simon Cowell 👎🏼 👍🏼@simoncowell Snoop Dogg 🚬 💨 @snoopdogg AOC & Theresa May & Ilhan Omar 💁🏾‍♀️🏛 @aoc @theresamay @ilhanmn Cassius (Marcellus) Clay Beto O’Rourke ⚖️ @betoorourke Kamala Harris 🥈@kamalaharris Adam Ellis 🤮 @adamtots Mark Rothko 🎨 😒 Rob Liefeld ✍🏻 @robliefeld Mahatma Gandhi ☮️ Jesse Jackson AND Al Sharpton 🤯 @real_sharpton Penny Marshall & Guillermo del Toro 😱 @realgdt Harry Blackstone Sr. 🪄 Margaret Thatcher & Vladimir Putin 🌚🌞 @vladimirputinrussianleader Oscar Wilde & Virgil 📝 There’s more, but…space is limited!!! (sorry @vancityreynolds , I still love ya’ man! Unless the internet is wrong, then…disregard) The sign itself is based on the scales of #justice or #Themis the Goddess of divine law and custom, and was actually once a part of the neighboring #constellation of #scorpio once called #chalae or claws. In this version, some time in the second century (AD/CE), the Romans hailed the constellation as signifying the important time of year where the day and night were in balance (which also happens during the Vernal #Equinox in Spring which brings us to the next version…) In one source, Libra is the golden chariot of Pluto/Hades in which he ‘claimed’ Persephone and heralds the seasons. Our final origin, is brought in part by theologians, who claim Libra is connected to the same legend as Virgo/#Astraea (see last months post for that one). #mythology #astrology #horoscope #vectorart #adobeillustrator #adobephotoshop #artist #art #illustration #illustrator #illustratorsoninstagram #digitalart #digitalartist #digitalillustration #digitalpainting #design #stilesofart @adobe @photoshop @_adobeillustrator_ @procreate https://www.instagram.com/p/CUH-6yFlzfj/?utm_medium=tumblr
