I've been weaving on my new Ashford Katie loom, Babygirl, just playing around with a bunch of different patterns (2/2 twill is my fave), and it's so cool!
Tumblr media
The Katie is a super nice loom, compact, beautiful, and really nice to weave on, but there's one massive issue: height.
Tumblr media
I was stoked to finally get to use my super snazzy fold-out table, but it's 75cm tall. The front of the loom is about 20cm tall. That puts my hands WAY too high to weave without a ton of ouch. Even grabbing my office chair and cranking it as high as it goes, it's not doable.
Tumblr media
It's not just a Katie problem; it'd be an issue with any table loom. I'm so used to my rigid heddle on it's perfect-height stand I just didn't think about it. Luckily, because of the way the Katie is constructed I can wiggle it forward and drop the front legs off the edge, but it mucks up the weaving a tad. So another solution must be found.
Tumblr media
Thankfully I've been able to source a desk/table thing that's only 65 cm tall, but man I'm really feeling for the short people right about now, given how hard it was to find.
With the bad news, however, comes the good. I'm about to come into possession of an Ashford four shaft table loom. Second hand, through a friend of a work friend, but it's apparently still in its box sitting in their garage. No clue how big it is, but they only wanted a hundred bucks for it, so I did not ask any questions beyond cash or bank transfer and when can we come pick it up. Exciting!

Now that I have the table loom home and set up, I need to remember how to calculate warp.
I have all this acrylic thrift store yarn that looks like a good choice for making a sampler of patterns
Tumblr media
Not sure how long I want my warp to be because I'm not really 'making' anything here but learning progress.
I figure I can combine a few lengths of the finished cloth to make a blanket or something but idk.
Anyone know how much I have to worry regarding shrinkage with acrylic?
Is it mostly like cotton and can be beaten more tightly or should I be giving the threads breathing room?
Also, do I need to protect my warp with paper when using a table loom like I do with the floor loom or will it be safe without?

Alright we've finally gotten them through the heddles. I'm even more impressed now by people operating multi shaft floor looms. What an ordeal.
Next problem: getting them through the reed. There's nowhere to rest the reed where I can also comfortably get to the threads. There's a little resting place, where it is now, but that's very inconvenient. Again this little loom is a little bit off.

This arrived yesterday! Unfortunately my assistant in loom construction is rather unwell so assembly will need to wait.

Well, at least it’s coming along. I accidentally threaded the middle threads too densely though. Dead center too! 😫 🤷🏾‍♀️ I’m hoping to get 9 sets of suns out of this warp but we’ll see.

People with table looms: what do you use to plan your weaves? I'm used to weaving diagrams that display the threading, tie-up and treadling like so:
Tumblr media
I can usually work out weaves using these diagrams with just a pen and a paper. Not so with the table loom, that doesn't have treadles! I feel like my whole brain is broken. Usually I'd start figuring out a new fabric tie-up first. Table loom doesn't have that either!
For now my work around is to plan the weaves on Weavepoint 8 and convert them into a format that I can use, but since I'll loose access to my schools weaving studio very soon, I'm wondering if a program exists for creating weaves for specifically this type of loom. I'd settle for a book or other good resources too!

Hey!!!! Look I made a reel with time lapse video on my phone and put bubbly music on it !!! This is my Instagram. Hehehe, I’m really having fun with this loom and making stripes and zigzags. Although it’s genuinely not ideal for many reasons for me, I think I’m going to end up committing to buying it. It’s very small for the most part and feels entirely manageable. Once I’m through with the warp already on here, I’m finally going to try warping. Hopefully once I warp a small loom, my big baby won’t seem so intimidating!
I can finally put my little collection of weaving books to use as well! I’m very very excited
