What I saw today: Tafoni

Kinda creepy looking “lace” erosion in sandstone, near the bottom of a famous outcrop. The larger holes are roughly fist-sized, the smallest “threads” are about a centimeter wide but stand away from the background much more than a cm. 

Looking up to the overhanging rocks -- look at those “cannonballs” apparently suspended from the parent rock above them. The holes are much larger, in general, than the lace Tafoni at the base in the other view. 

About 1.2 mile / 2km walk from the nearest road; nice safe trail.

고성 능파대▶ 문암해변 독특한 타포니 지형과 아름다운 풍광, 다만 주변 관리는 아쉬움! 2022년 10월 25일 강원 평화지역 국가지질공원 용암이 빚어 놓은 드넓은 대지 능파대 凌波臺 강원도 고성군 죽왕면 괘진길 65 '파도를 능가하는 돌섬' 파도가 몰아쳐 바위를 때리는 광경을 빗대어 붙여진 이름 육계도(陸繫島/land-tied island)를 이루는 암석해안에 발달한 대규모 타포니(tafoni) 군락지 ※ 육계도는 모래더미가 쌓여 육지와 연결된 섬 물리적ㆍ화학적 풍화작용으로부터 암석 표면에 구멍들이 듬숭듬숭 마치 벌집 같은 풍화혈 전북 진안 마이산 절벽 경주 골굴암 석굴사원에도 바로 이게 타포니 지형이라. 능파대 본래는 화강암이 노출된 암초 이후 문암천에서 모래가 흘러들고 그 모래가 쌓여 육지와 연결되었고 그런데 지금 해안가엔 항구와 취락지구 따라서 육계도 흔적은 거의 없다. 문암대교 너머 산마루 걸린 해 해변으로 잔잔히 밀려드는 파도 꽤 멋스럽고 고즈넉한 해변 풍경 한편 주변 무성한 잡초들 플라스틱 등 각종 쓰레기  훼손된 듯한  요형(凹型)의 돌구멍 이처럼 관리는 거의 되지 않아 아쉬움! #능파대#고성능파대#강원도고성여행#동해바다여행#강원도여행#타포니#육계도#문암해변#고성문암해변#파도섬#돌섬#강원도고성가볼만한곳#동해드라이브#동해드라이코스#강원도고성드라이브#강원도고성관광#파도소리(능파대에서) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co9E38dyLhq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tafoni Basalt This is a lovely rock from Rapa Nui (aka Easter island). Like many of the rocks on that hotspot-produced island, this rock is a basalt, a lava flow erupted from an oceanic volcano. You can also clearly see how the outermost layer of the rock is being gradually popped off – this honeycomb like texture is called “Tafoni” by geoscientists.

There is no single, exact mechanism that produces this type of weathering every single time. In most cases, it is found associated with salts and water, but wind erosion and maybe even bacteria can play a role. The most general idea is that it is associated with wetting and drying of the rock surface; a little sea spray brings in some salt, as the water dries out that salt is left behind, and as salt crystals grow they gradually put more pressure on the grains that surround them, eventually causing the grains to be shoved out of the way. -JBB Image credit: https://flic.kr/p/2jqxVH3 Reference: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/esp.2112

Known as honeycomb weathering or "swiss-cheese rock," tafoni (singular: tafone) are small, rounded, smooth-edged openings in a rock surface, most often found in arid or semi-arid deserts. They can occur in clusters looking much like a sponge and are nearly always on a vertical or inclined face protected from surface runoff.
