Blank Page Brigade Spotlight: Editors

At the end of volumes of Black Clover is space for the “Blank Page Brigade.” This particular “brigade” is composed of the assistants (you know, those who help with art) and others from the Black Clover manga team, lead by “Captain Tabata.”

In each volume there’s a question that everyone answers. I’ve compiled the answers from all published volumes (1-32), and grouped them together. Previous answers (and drawings from the assistants) can be seen starting with this post HERE.

However, the rest of the staff didn’t include drawings, but they are each represented by an animal-like self (I don’t know if they drew that for themselves, or if it was Tabata or someone else). In the beginning, sometimes these animal selves would be expressing, but eventually it was just the icon.

Editor #1: Tatsuhiko KATAYAMA

was present for half of the series, from vol.1-15

While Katayama gets a little doodle of a crying capybara starting in volume 3, logistically as the editor Katayama would've been there from the start. Maybe they were still figuring out what Katayama's doodle was gonna be?

Black Clover may have been the first manga he was editor of, but it was far from his last! Katayama was also the 1st editor for Demon Slayer, editor for Summer Time Render, and editor for Jujutsu Kaisen! And at some point promoted to group leader/captain!

I know his name is Tatsuhiko because they said so in an interview he did for Viz - actually he's done quite a few interviews!

Editor #2: TOIDE

was present from vol.16-23

his name might be Keisuke but I'm not totally sure about that so uhh...

volume 20 had a message pointing to Toide and Comic Editor Koshimura that said “Incredibly, it turns out that these two are from the same part of the country”

Katayama and Toide, two editors for Black Clover, have cosplayed as Asta, but Toide stepped it up a notch and has also cosplayed Grey and Noelle! He's a former editor, you know!

Editor #3: IWASAKI

was present for only vol.24 and 25

his name might be Yuuji but I'm not totally sure about that either so uhh...

apparently this was Iwasaki's first manga that he was editor of, however his time was very brief, joining around the 6-month timeskip and then dipping half-way through the Dark Triad fights (around the time of the Heart Kingdom dark disciple fights from the looks of the date of Tabata's WSJ author's comment)

this was also when the lockdowns from COVID were really coming down so I can't help but wonder what happened here...

Farewell, Editor Iwasaki!!!

Iwasaki is the sort of agreeable young guy you just don't see these days. He's such an extremely good person, so this lightning-fast editor change makes me sad and kinda lonely...

He watched over my baby daughter's growth every week, and "If this keeps up, he might end up being her first love" was a thought that concerned me.

Hang on... Looking back, I realize I forgot to write a comment here when my previous editor Toide left...

Editor #4: FUKUDA

present since vol.26, confirmed up to vol.32, and I assume is still the current editor

it’s been a while since there was a hiccup like this, but it seems Iwasaki’s departure was still sudden enough that the English copy of vol.27 accidentally copied-pasted Iwasaki’s name onto Fukuda’s answer

apparently Crazy Aaron's Putty World is a brand of putty, and "Thinking Putty" is specifically this here

From volume 26 afterword:

Between this and that, Mr. Fukuda is now my editor! At first, I thought, "This guy has a lot of energy. Youth is a wonderful thing," but now, after a few months have passed, he's pretty ragged!! I'll take him to hell with me, just like my previous editors!! I'm looking forward to working with him!!

Next Up: the end! with extra drawings from assistants in vol.31-32 and an unexpected bonus that I found!

I wanted to go on a drawing spree yesterday, but I could only muster these two before dozing off.

First one, even if I'm not that sure about how I drew her face shape in this angle (and most importantly I forgot her neck and torso bandages OOPS) I do really like how most of the drawing came out. And at least it isn't a bland bust this time, though I'm pretty sure I've already drawn a pose like this before. (Oh no the next drawing is a 3/4 bust again..)

Second, yesterday I saw an artist draw some of the coolest redesigns ever for a different media piece, and thought about the many awesome gg redesigns I often see so I wanted to give A.B.A a spin... Except I was out of ideas so most of this drawing is her regular design haha. I got too tired to even try to attempt to draw the rest of the body and half-assed the key but I like the vibes and pose (even if I.. think I made her neck a bit too long? Old habits die hard... Necks are my enemies when drawing!)

I like the idea of her having a key take on the classic frankenstein bolts (though wait, her head key is referred to as a screw. Would this also be a screw or key shaped bolts??-)

when it comes to most things, Hyuk best shows his affection through silly actions and jokes. “If you really loved me, you’d binge watch the entirety of maria with me ^_^". In return he'd probably play/watch/read that one piece of media you’re obsessed with.

If he goes out and sees anything related to the media you really like, he'd buy it and say something like "i thought of you". It would be an unconscious thing, before he'd realize he likes you. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

I feel like I can't answer this with Metalocalypse lol. My two biggest ships are 1. between two characters who only share 2 scenes together (and one of them is basically a onesided rock opera Zoom call), and a three-way relationship with a canonically married couple + a third character who never interacts with either of them and died the episode he was introduced. This show stopped making material in 2013. We had to make do.

And generally, even if I don't like a ship, I can usually understand the appeal if I think about where the fans are coming from. I don't have to personally get it or even like the portrayal. But it's not that I can't fathom it.

But anyway, this is a Sanubis hate blog. Yeah I "get" the appeal of making an edgy vaguely goth love interest for the teen protagonist. But did Rick have to use one of the pantheon's most fascinating deities to accomplish that? First I was hopeful because tkc was one of the few properties that actually established him as the god of funeral rites instead of the god of death (serious pet peeve of mine), but then it becomes blatantly obvious that he's just there to be a love interest. And even if that wasn't excruciating, any fun dynamic he and Sadie have just vanishes after the first book. He used to be kind of awkward and rigid -- which makes sense because he's a 5000 year old deity who spends most of his time around dead people. But why is he wearing a leather jacket and combat boots??? Why does he dress like me?? Is that how he greets the souls before he leads them to the next world? If your ancient Egyptian funeral god can be easily cosplayed by me, you fucked up. But also, that awkwardness is gone by the next two books and he just becomes a love interest. The lost potential is frustrating. Sadie spends most of her arc grieving her dead mother, and one of the most central relationships she has is with a funeral god. That should have been brought up more. And, I shouldn't have to say this, BUT SADIE WAS 12-13 YEARS OLD. Get away from her!

P/jo has frustrated me as of late, but that's mostly because the fandom doesn't seem to understand tag etiquette and it's impossible to find TKC stuff on any website because of that. But I still love the series.

What made you ship it? What Was Missing! I was the dreaded fake fan who got into Adventure Time because of the preview for that episode and watched all the Marceline and Bubblegum episodes in a week to prepare with no care as to what I was missing of Finn and Jake's story otherwise, and the episode itself still blew all my hopes out of the water and displaced all my other fandoms. I basically became an AT fan overnight. I did then marathon the entire series and mostly keep up with it for the next gajillion years! But yeah this was one of a very very few fandoms I got into for the ship first, sorry to everyone in tags back then who was mad at us lmfaooooo

What are your favorite things about the ship? - Immortal bitter exes (and before Obsidian, that vibe of "we never dated but we're still exes" that I also find delicious) - The songs. Their songs are so gooooooood. Just Your Problem and Woke Up are probs my fav songs from the show (UNSURPRISINGLY) haha. You can invest me in a lot w/ music, see: my Rebecca Bunch CXGF otps. - The deceptive and creative characterization! Pink candy-sweet Princess Bubblegum is a stubborn mad scientist authoritarian ruler, scary vampire-wolf-bat Marceline the Vampire Queen is all lofi beats to chill to/soft vulnerable belly who drinks colors not blood. Both the like, most simply described versions of their characters, and the densest versions w/ character arcs and growth that are so wrapped up in each other, are pure pure fun! - The canon slowburn! I was so sure after What Was Missing that we had just been gifted obvious canon, and I actually was p humiliated I forgot to manage my expectations when the response was like "you delusional lesbos, I sleep in my bestie's shirts all the time, why do you have to make everything gay" and the network backed that up, because it truly did not occur to me that we weren't doing an explicitly queer story here. But the morsels they fed us after that were all still so tasty. Sky Witch unhinged me enough to do a shitty cosplay. The morsels could be maddening in the moment, when the network seemed adamantly opposed to any onscreen canon, but the cohesion and evolution of the story the showrunners still told in the face of that is both deeply narratively satisfying and just also incredibly well done? Obsidian was not a retcon in any way: it was just a culmination. A payoff of years of careful writing and deep fan engagement. Going back and rewatching everything made my heart burst!!! They were truly worth the wait.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I think it's probably popular to be irritated with flanderized takes on the characters where PB is a prep and Marcy is a goth and Marcy makes PB blush and that's the entire dynamic, so idk. I was never into the "drawing your OTP as Bubbline" fandom trend that was omnipresent for many years (why are you TAGGING your kpop dude art as Bubbline! GUYS), but otoh I always kind of preened over what a fandom blueprint the ship became, so I can't complain too much. Maybe just I think PB is hot when she's mean. Yes I have dom/sub preferences in a sentient piece of gum/demonbat cartoon ship.

Day 6 of cosplay advent calendar, cosplay I’m most proud of: My favourite costume I’ve made is my Alice Hysteria mode costume because it was YEARS of hoping to be made. I got the fabric years ago and asked my mother to make it when I was about 14 and she said she would, but then my parents divorced, we ended up homeless and tossed around till we settled down then life took over. I kept the fabric and years later finally I made her and my mother helped as she was originally the one to make it before I learnt to make costumes so this was a collaboration piece spanning my entire cosplay journey.
