The guy's a ghost. I've literally turned this blog into a search for the Vintage Spring Bonnie suit, seeing as it was what the murderer wore to kill the missing kids. It's also missing, btw. It was also the only suit William Afton would wear, and some reports say he didn't like it when employees wore his suit. I'm hoping if I look for the Vintage Bonnie suit, then Afton might be too.

It was a good thing that Hawkmoth’s attacks allowed Marinette to become used to supervillains at this point because otherwise, she would be losing her mind.
Oh, right, context.
Marinette’s class were still on their trip to Gotham. They had forgotten her again, but she decided she could spend the time with Damian. He accepted her offer, and together they toured some of the sights in Gotham during the day. They didn’t look as spooky as they usually did at night, and Marinette quickly wrote down and sometimes sketched out many design ideas during their adventure.
An adventure that was now put on hold because of a villain who thought green was a good color on him.
When outsiders heard of the big bad Gotham villains, they typically talked about The Joker or Harley Quinn, maybe Poison Ivy or Bane or even Catwoman. The Riddler was mentioned often, but he was the bottom of the ones on top. The A- of the A’s if you will.
Marinette knew he liked riddles and traps and he wore a lot of green. That was pretty much it.
Damian and Marinette were in line to get ice cream when the widows were suddenly blacked out. Damian grabbed Marinette’s hand. The doors locked, and the few people in the shop were trapped with the Riddler. He pointed a question mark shaped gun at them and demanded that they go to the back room.
Damian held Marinette’s hand, mumbling that it would be all right. Marinette nodded numbly, realizing that she likely couldn’t escape to become Ladybug if needed.
Tikki was unmoving in her purse.
She looked around her. The Riddler had the cashier, a father, and his two daughters, her and Damian.
The two girls were silent and scared, their shoulders hunched, but they continued to walk. Each held one of their father’s hands. The father himself was steely and glaring, but she saw the tremble in his lip. The cashier was wide-eyed and shaking. Marinette saw the beginnings of an anxiety attack in him. The worker that was dishing up the ice cream had followed them out but put on a mask. Must have been a henchman in disguise.
Damian was angry. He looked impassive at a glance, but his emotionless stare showed the fire in his eyes. Marinette hoped his anger didn’t lead to recklessness.
“Now that I’ve got you all here,” the Riddler cackled, “I need two volunteers to do the puzzle I set up until Batman and his batbrats show up! The others will wait here locked in a room as bait.”
Marinette glanced at the group. Two little girls, one around five and one around eight. A cashier struggling to breathe. A father wanting to protect his daughters.
Two pissed off able-bodied teenagers.
“We’ll go,” Marinette sounded more confident than she felt when she lifted her and Damian’s still conjoined hands.
He hissed something at her, it sounded like a question, but the blood roaring in her ears drowned out the words.
The Riddler grinned. “Excellent! A Wayne and a foreigner! Follow me!”
A Wayne? Marinette glanced at Damian but he started walking, dragging her for a few steps before she caught up.
The henchman locked the door behind them, locking the four others in the hallway. Marinette and Damian were now locked in with The Riddler
It was massive.
The room was the size of her school gym with green and purple squares covering the floor. There were black edges where they were standing now, but the majority of the room was square tiles.
They were on the ceiling too, Marinette noticed. The low hanging lights were still high enough to see the ceiling. Marinette could even see the hinges on the squares – What were those for?. Green squares were above purple squares and vice versa.
“What did you do?” Damian whispers. The blood roaring in Marinette’s ears was quiet enough for her to hear.
“We were the best bet,” she whispers back. An angry protective father would be rash. A panicking employee would stumble. Two young girls would be unpredictable.
Damian is angry, but from the, so far, little time they’ve spent together, Marinette knows he’s smart. He calculates his movements, coordinates the best course of action. He’s angry, but he will hopefully think before being reckless.
And she’s Ladybug, though currently without her suit. She’s dealt with similar things before, and she can do it again.
“As you can see,” The Riddler gestured to the brightly colored room, “there’s a gameboard. And you two are game pieces. Make a wrong step and…”
He reached for his cane that was tied at his belt and pressed a button on it. The green square nearest to them made a beeping sound. The purple square above it opened up like a latch and bricks dropped from it.
The sound of the bricks hitting the ground was loud, Marinette and Damian both flinched. She closed her eyes and gripped his hand tighter.
When she opened her eyes again, she surveyed the damage. The bricks went through the green square, opening up a dark hole below the floor. Marinette couldn’t see how far down it was.
The Riddler grinned, “as implied, if you make one wrong step then you die! Simple enough to understand?”
Marinette had to fight not to shake. She felt anger rising from within her – not fear.
She glanced at Damian. He was shifting his feet, his expression neutral. Was he angry too? Or was he scared?
Marinette’s anger grew. Her friend shouldn’t have to be scared.
She turned back to The Riddler. “How do we know if any of the cubes are fake?” she asked. Her voice shook, but she shifted her feet and didn’t meet The Riddler’s eyes so he mistook her fury for fear.
Villains loved to be feared.
Damian’s hand tightening grounded her to reality.
The Riddler smiled.
“I assure you there is a way to win,” he chuckled. “Now, who wants to go first?”
So, yeah. It was a good thing that Hawkmoth’s attacks allowed Marinette to become used to supervillains at this point because otherwise, she would be losing her mind.
She heard Damian move behind her. He was going to offer to go first, she knew it.
“I’ll go.”
Her voice sounded meek. Good.
“Angel,” Damian hissed, “What do you think you’re doing?”
“No takebacks!” the villain laughed. “Go ahead and choose, but make it snappy!”
Marinette squeezed Damian’s hand before letting go.
She glanced at the floor. All the tiles that were the same color seemed to be made of the same paint. They all had the same texture of wood. They were all identical from what she could see. But there had to be a way to tell which ones were dangerous.
She looked at the ceiling. There was one open tile-door but the others were closed and waiting. She couldn’t see latches. The colors were the same paint as the floor, the same size as each other and the floor. The only real difference from the floor was the hinges but-
The hinges!
The hinge on the open door was large. Likely more expensive, made to hold a lot of weight. But there were hinges on other tiles that were smaller. Likely cheaper and not made to hold a bunch of bricks.
It was the best chance she had.
Marinette looked at the closest one with a small hinge. It was one down from the hole in the floor, two steps and she would be on it.
“Go already,” The Riddler snarled. “Unless you want your friend to go-”
Marinette stepped on the purple square.
The Riddler chuckled, and fear finally overpowered the anger. What if she was wrong? What if the hinges were a fake trap and she was about to die? What if
He clicked the button.
The square under her feet beeped.
Damian inhaled.
The trapdoor opened.
Marinette did not scream.
She did stiffen. Nothing came.
She looked up in time for a soft feather land on her nose.
“Lucky guess!” The Riddler cackled with glee. “Let’s hope you can keep it up! But for now, it’s your friend’s turn.”
Marinette’s eyes widened. “Why can’t I play alone?” she asked.
She felt Tikki hit her leg and ignored her.
“What, think your friend isn’t as lucky as you?” he asked. “Tick, toc, Wayne. Don’t keep us waiting.”
Damian looked at the squares on the ground, trying to figure out where to step. He didn’t look up. He wasn’t going to get it right.
Marinette glanced up. The green one to his right should be safe. It was the one next to her.
Damian began to step on the purple one next to the green one. It wasn’t safe. The hinge was too large it wasn’t safe Damian was going to die and-
He looked at Marinette, seeing her panic.
He didn’t step on it.
Marinette relaxed, ever so slightly. Damian looked her in the eyes and she glanced at the safe square.
He stepped on the green square next to her.
When The Riddler clicked his button, another feather dropped down on Damian.
“Seems the little foreigner is helping the competition!” The Riddler growled. “You think I wouldn’t see the silent communication there? Now you have to answer a riddle for every turn, girlie! Answer correctly and you’ll survive.”
Marinette saw Damian get angry for a second before his face became neutral again. She felt nervousness rise within her.
The Riddler was known for his riddles. This may be harder than she thought…
“Take your turn,” the villain growled.
Marinette did, stepping on another safe space. When the feather fell, The Riddler growled lowly.
“Now answer this,” his voice was low.
Marinette’s breathing quickened.
Damian’s fist clenched.
She tried not to shake, she was going to get it wrong and die and-
“What is the beginning of eternity, the end of time and space, the beginning of every end and the end of every race?”
Marinette blinked, all her nervousness and fear draining out of her.
This was supposed to be a hard riddle? By the villain named after them? Annoyance was the prickling sensation over and over again that made her skin crawl and want to be itched. This villain is trying to kill them through an elaborate game and gave her such an easy riddle?
“The letter E,” she tried not to growl.
The Riddler frowned. “Take another turn.”
“But what about mine-”
“Shut it, Wayne,” The Riddler growled at him. “Take another turn, girlie. Your luck will run out eventually.”
Marinette took another turn. She got another feather.
The Riddler snarled, glaring at the ceiling.
Did he not know? Marinette mentally shook her head. The Riddler knew which squares were good and which ones were bad, he was simply frustrated that Marinette knew too.
“Go again!” he barked, forgoing the riddle.
Marinette went again. She had to step over a square but was safe once more.
“How can you tell?” the villain was snarling. “How do you know which ones you can use and which ones you can’t?”
Marinette shrugged. There was no way she was giving away the clue to him, he would only fix it the next time. “Just lucky I guess.”
“No, you figured something out,” The Riddler hissed. “How? How did you do it?”
She heard movement behind her and panicked for a moment. What was Damian doing? She scoffed so The Riddler wouldn’t hear him too.
“As if I’d tell you,” she held her head up, haughty.
Tikki hit her leg again but it was too late.
She could see the villain’s resolve snap.
When he lunged, Marinette was expecting it. Distantly, she heard someone yell behind her but her focus was on her immediate surroundings and her movements.
Sidestep to avoid the villain. Sweep under feet to make him lose his balance. Elbow to the side to topple him over. Jump to avoid his attempt to bring her down with him. Kick his remote away from him.
Of course, the villain didn’t stay down. Once she kicked his device away he was up again, this time fighting her with more intelligent movements.
No sweat. She won against akuma smarter than her before.
And it became apparent to her within a few seconds that The Riddler was not very good at fighting hand to hand combat.
She jabbed him in the throat before quickly running off the board to look for Damian.
Instead, she ran into another body.
“Woah, calm down,” Marinette didn’t recognize the voice, but she did recognize Red Robin and Robin, who were both standing where she was running toward.
Robin looked a little messy, almost like he changed his costume quickly. He also looked surprised, but Marinette couldn’t fathom why.
She looked behind them, seeing the door she and Damian entered through open, the other people from before missing.
She didn’t see Damian.
“Where’s my friend?” she asked. “Damian, he came here with me and-”
“It’s alright An- civilian,” Robin stepped forward. Red Robin walked to the villain. “I carried him out while The Riddler was focused on you.”
“You knocked him out,” Red Robin commented from behind her.
Marinette glanced back and shrugged. “Punching faces is stupid, you’re more likely to hurt your hand if you don’t do it right. Going for the throat is a dirty move but more effective.”
Robin looked surprised again, and Marinette was confused. Why was it surprising? Most people in Paris took up basic self-defense, so it’s not like she told him she was Ladybug.
“How’d you figure out his riddle board thing?” Red Robin asked.
Marinette turned to face him and pointed upward. “Anyone can figure it out if they look up! It’s obvious.”
Red Robin looked up. Marinette heard Robin move behind her and assumed he was also looking up.
“What?” Robin sounded confused.
“Oh!” Red Robin snapped his fingers. “The hinges?”
Marinette nodded. “He must have cut some corners because there’s no way the small hinges would hold a bunch of bricks.”
She heard Robin make an, “Oh,” sound behind her.
Red Robin looked back at her. “You’re pretty smart.”
Marinette’s eyes widened and she shook her head. “No, it’s something anyone would notice if they looked up! I just managed to use the knowledge.”
Red Robin didn’t look like he believed her, but Marinette didn’t know what she could do to dissuade him. She wasn’t as smart as Max, or anyone else, she just noticed her surroundings. It was a habit she picked up from being Ladybug.
There were footsteps behind her, too heavy to be Robin. Marinette saw Red Robin nod to them and assumed it was another one of Gotham’s heroes.
“How’d you know enough self-defense to take out one of Gotham’s villains?” Robin sounded suspicious.
Marinette relaxed slightly. “Paris has akuma like, every week. Most citizens learn enough self-defense to stay alive during attacks. I did a little more because my classmates are akumatized the most.”
Red Robin stepped forward. “Is there any more information on these akuma you can-”
“Robin,” a voice said from behind Marinette and Robin. She didn’t jump since she knew someone else was there.
She turned to see Batman, THE Batman, talking to Robin. “Please allow the civilian to leave, we need to get The Riddler to Arkham.”
Robin sighed.
“I’ll guide her out,” Red Robin offered, and Batman cut off any protests from Robin.
Marinette walked away with Red Robin, managing to shake off her starstruck-ness about Batman when they neared the exit.
“You really are smart,” Red Robin told her. “Most people don’t take notice of details like that easily. And I heard you solved one of his riddles.”
Marinette made a face. “His riddle was kind of pathetic. Anyone would have solved it.”
Red Robin shrugged. “Your friend is waiting in the police station down the street.”
Marinette felt her shoulders drop in relief. “Thank you,” she said before making her way to the station quickly.
Behind her, Red Robin smiled and walked back inside. Marinette was a genius, even if she didn’t realize, and he hoped Damian invited her over soon so he could see who was smarter of the two of them.
She may actually be a challenge!

Marinette walked into the police station only to be immediately hugged by the two girls.
“Thank you,” the older one’s voice was muffled by her stomach. “I was so scared. Thank you for not letting him take us.”
“I’m happy to help,” she assured them.
She saw their father talking to the officer. His eyes met hers and he mouthed, “thank you.”
She nodded to let him know she understood. The little girls let go of her and went to their father.
Looking around more, she saw the cashier being talked to by the officer. He looked a lot calmer now, thankfully. The henchman was in cuffs and being escorted to the cells for transfer.
She didn’t see Damian.
Worry was ice water in her veins and she began to shiver. Where was he? Did something happen? Was there another villain on the street that got him? Did anyone even know he was missing?
“Angel!” she turned her head toward the door to see Damian rush in. The ice water drained out, leaving warm fuzzies – hold on when did that happen?
Before she could ponder for much longer Marinette was wrapped in a hug. She returned it without thinking, breathing in and out slowly. Damian was really warm.
“I went back out to look for you, Robin told me you were here,” Damian mumbled. He stepped back, checking over her. “Are you alright? Are you hurt?”
Marinette shook her head. “I’m perfectly fine, Damian. I’m just glad you’re okay.”
He sighed in relief. “Don’t scare me like that again, Angel, please.”
It was now that Marinette noticed his slightly unkempt appearance. He was fine when she last saw him, but now his clothes were crooked and his hair was messy. It reminded her of someone, but she wasn’t sure who.
He must have been really worried.
Guilt was heavy on her shoulders. “I’m sorry, I should have given you more warning, or only volunteered myself.”
“What?” Damian shook his head. “No, I’m glad it was us two. The Riddler would have killed anyone else. I was more worried when you fought him.”
“You fought The Riddler?” The cashier was staring at her with wide eyes. His voice was loud enough that the entire station went silent.
Marinette laughed clumsily. The guilt had lessened, but awkwardness was chaining her. “He was bad at hand to hand combat. And mad at me. That made him make some dumb moves, most people would have been able to beat him.”
“Still,” an officer with grey hair and a mustache chuckled. “Quite commendable for a young girl.”
“It’s really nothing,” Marinette tried to wave it off. “We have a lot of villains in Paris. I’d be stupid if I didn’t learn to fight them.”
“The akuma!” the youngest daughter shouted. “I saw on the Lady’s blog about superheroes!”
She felt Tikki shift slightly in her purse.
“Don’t believe everything on that blog,” her older sister mumbled. “There is no way sausage hair is a superhero’s best friends. Superheroes don’t make friends with civilians.”
“I only watch the videos of fights,” the young girl pouted.
“Miss, if you’re ready,” the greying officer gestured to an empty room. “We need you to retell everything that just happened for the record.”
Marinette nodded. Damian let go of her fully, and she already missed the warmth – what was that? When did these feelings start?
She followed the officer into his office, not noticing the awed looks of those around her as she passed by.
After she left, Damian Wayne pulled out his phone. Someone had to let her teacher know she was alright if they even noticed her missing at all.
They’re fools not to notice her, but Damian was glad he had no competition from those idiots.

Unnamed Teenager From France Holds off The Riddler Until Batman Arrives!
“I was just doing what anyone else would have done,” she says. “He was pretty annoying though. His riddles need work.”
“A teenage girl took down Ed?” she turned to her friend. “After that whole trap he set up?”
“Seems so,” her friend shrugged. “Good for her. Hopefully, she goes back to France before he escapes and exacts revenge.”
“Watcha ladies talking about?” a pop of bubblegum. “Ooh! This lady betta watch her back, more villains might be interested in her if she can defeat Eddie!”
“You mean like us?” she asked.
“No,” her friend sighed. “We should leave her alone. One villain on her trip is enough. And I need to care for my plants, they're important for my next heist.”
The third girl shrugged. “Ain’t up ta me, but I won’t be the one that tells Puddin’ if that helps.”
“That helps,” she hummed. She would need to catch Batman on patrol tonight and ask him about it. She hadn’t stolen anything in a while, so he would likely talk to her for a bit.
“Of course you won’t tell him! You won’t go near him again if I have anything to say about it,” her friend replied to the third girl.
“Aw, Red, you do care!”

Pidge rolls her eyes as she texts her older brother. Lance shoots a text to Hunk, who responds with a single thumbs up emoji. They all meet at less than ten minutes later at the off-campus pizzeria that sells by the slice. Lance gets three for himself and two for Pidge; Matt, who is the only person over the age of twenty-one, covertly buys a pitcher of beer that they pour into their small, plastic water cups.
"Sweet, sweet, processed goodness," Matt half-cries as he chews, his mouth filled with cheese, pepperoni, and grease. "How I missed you."
Lance would be more sympathetic to Matt's dilemma if the man hadn't embarrassed him in a game of beer pong at a sorority the week before. Lance can't prove it, but he knows in his heart of hearts that Matt cheated. Nobody beats Lance at beer pong, okay. Nobody.
"That bad?" Pidge grins.
"You have no idea," Matt bemoans. "Like—Takashi's a great dude, don't get me wrong—but when I found him on Craig's List I was more worried about being murdered in my sleep than I was about weird diet habits. Turns out I should have been more worried about the diet habits. Our fridge is filled with kale. Kale, Kit-Kat. From the farmer's market."
"Kale is really good for you," Hunk interjects.

I am very, very clear and consistent about this.
But people keep asking me about the manga, anyway. Apparently it isn’t clear by my rampant avoidance of manga continuity in my fanfiction — which is where you will find the vast majority of my engagement with this series and fandom — that I hate it. Well. I do. I hate the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. I understand, embrace, and adore what it represents. And you will never hear a bad word about Mister Takahashi’s artwork from me. He’s a wonderful artist and I am in absolute awe of him for that. That is their prerogative. You will note, I hope, that I leave such fans to their business. My opinion on their preferred canon is not useful to them, so I don’t go out of my way to give it. I would have hoped for the same courtesy in return.
Anon, you were polite in your approach, which is more than I can say for others who’ve confronted me about this topic. With this in mind, I will endeavor to explain why I take issue with the argument you present here, as well as why I don’t like this line of discussion. That may not be what you were looking for in a response, but it’s what I have, and it’s what I will offer.
A note: just because I don’t like the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga doesn’t mean I haven’t read it. I will be using Chapters 1, 9, 10, 24, 25, 27, 39, and 40 to explain my position here. So if anyone reading this hasn’t read the manga, but intends to, keep this in mind before clicking the Keep Reading link. Understand that this is going to be long, it is going to be critical, and I am not open to debate. I have been approached, in my space, and this is going to be my final word on everything I have been avoiding since I started this blog.

Now, then. Let us begin.
The Case Against Inconsistency: Katsuya Jonouchi
Like any story, Yu-Gi-Oh! has various themes that define it. Whether outright stated or just implied throughout, they exist. And one of the things we learn, throughout the story of Yugi, Atem, and their various friends, acquaintances, and antagonists, is this: how people conduct themselves determines their success.
It’s a classic Good VS Evil paradigm, and it’s one that a lot of us are familiar with. How does it play out? Well, in theory, what this should mean is that people who conduct themselves fairly, with honor and integrity, prevail. And people who conduct themselves poorly, with deceit and bitterness, will not. I think that a fair amount of fans of Yu-Gi-Oh! will agree with this idea.
Good people succeed. Bad people fail.
Yu-Gi-Oh! uses its duels like another anime would use a fight scene. When Naruto — or Goku, or Ichigo, or Kenshin, or whichever shonen action hero you fancy — comes up against a new opponent, we expect him to win. Why? Because he’s the hero. He’s the Good Guy™. And that’s how this is supposed to go, right? The hero is supposed to win because if the hero loses, that isn’t fair.
The world isn’t fair, people say. And that’s true. This is why we look to fiction. Or, at least, it’s why I look to fiction. In fiction, the world can be fair. And in a fair world, the good folks win. So that’s what we want to see. We want to see the hero struggle, sure. We want the fight to be hard-won. But we still want it to be won.
In this story’s case, we have Yugi Mutou. He’s our hero. And when we’re introduced to him, we’re given a clear indication of why we’re supposed to root for him.

When Our Hero™ is confronted by Katsuya Jonouchi here, right in the first chapter, it’s clear who’s supposed to be sympathetic. Jonouchi is a bully. Taking Yugi’s things away from him and goading him to fight for them. For a story that sets itself up in a high school, this is pretty standard. This is Episode 1 territory. And Yugi, bless him, sets himself up quickly as the good guy. He hates fighting. He hates violence. And those are traits we, as people living in a “proper and civilized” world, should admire.

Hiroto Honda doesn’t come off looking much better. But notice here that, even though Jonouchi and Honda are both antagonizing Yugi, he’s not exactly condemning them. Maybe it’s a defense mechanism. Maybe he’s just scared of getting a rise out of them, because they’re set up as bullies and Yugi is set up as a favored victim. But regardless of why he acts the way he does, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that a lot of people reading this story are going to relate to Yugi, in this moment, before they relate to the other two.

Then, we’re introduced to the second sympathetic character in this opening scene. Anzu Mazaki is quickly established as (1) Yugi’s friend and (2) someone that Jonouchi and Honda are afraid of. This is (tangentially) important to note.
If Yugi has someone willing and ready to protect him, and that someone has the edge over his bullies, then is he honestly afraid of them? Maybe he isn’t. Maybe that’s the point. He doesn’t like dealing with Jonouchi and Honda at this moment, but this presented a question in my head: does he fear them? Are they enemies to him?
Given what happens later on in this chapter, the answer to the former is kind of up in the air, but the answer to the latter is most likely no.
But anyway. A bit later on, we reach the first major point to which I want to draw specific attention. The first major moment that is relevant to why I have take issue with the idea that “Kaiba has literally pushed all his buttons.”

Jonouchi, still angry that things didn’t go his way in the intro scene, has opted to steal a piece of the Millennium Puzzle — which we all know is an immensely important part of this story’s mythology — so that Yugi will never be able to complete it, even if he gets it most of the way there.
The puzzle represents Yugi’s only real goal this early on: he wants friends. He’s heard from his grandfather that the Millennium Puzzle grants wishes, and his wish is for friends. What I mean to point out is that Jonouchi’s behavior here is an immense violation of Yugi’s privacy, and a serious blow against Jonouchi’s integrity. I’ve been robbed before. It’s an absolute travesty, and I have extremely limited sympathy for people who would steal like this. Taking food from a store because you’re starving? I know that’s a classic tactic and maybe it’s a cliché at this point in the game, but still. I’m probably not going to judge anyone for that. Desperate calls and all.
But stealing someone’s most prized possession because you’re sulking? That’s … pretty black-and-white awful in my book.
Some of you might be wondering why I’m going into this much detail about plot elements that occur before Seto even shows up. Others might be wondering how I can say that Jonouchi isn’t worthy of sympathy for what he’s done here, considering what Seto does later on. Well. I’ll get to that.
But for now, consider these points from the remainder of the introduction: Yugi defends Jonouchi and Honda, getting himself beaten up in the process. It’s thus established that these two boys — who are implied to have been bullying Yugi for at least a little while now — are Yugi’s friends. In spite of what we see in the beginning, and in spite of how Jonouchi in particular acts during his introduction, Yugi considers the both of them friends.
The Case Against Inconsistency: Seto Kaiba
Now, then. What about Seto Kaiba, you might be wondering?
When he’s introduced in Chapter 9, there really isn’t much to be said about Seto, other than there’s something off about him. And he really, really wants Sugoroku Mutou’s Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
I want to draw your attention to the first moment when we really sense what’s being set up with Seto’s first chapter.

When Seto can’t trade for, or buy, Sugoroku’s card … he decides to steal it. Now. Generally speaking, we would be expected to understand that this is an Objectively Bad Thing™, right? Of course it is. There is no excuse for this kind of behavior. I just covered this.
But recall the specifics: Yugi’s been stolen from before. Does he know that? No. Yugi never figures out that it was Jonouchi who stole that pivotal piece of the Millennium Puzzle. Not directly. But the point I’m making here is: we know it was Jonouchi. We, as the audience, know what happened to the last person who robbed Yugi.
… Absolutely nothing.
This is what I mean when I say that the manga is … weird about enforcing its own rules. Seto Kaiba is set up as a villain for doing the exact same thing Yugi’s own best friend did in the first chapter. Now, let’s look at the other part of Seto’s introductory equation, which occurs when Yugi confronts him about having stolen his grandfather’s prized card.

Seto gets irritated that Yugi won’t let this whole thing go, and clocks him across the face. Now. Seto is not shown in a sympathetic light here. I’m not trying to claim that he is. My point with these scenes — aside from transparency — is simply one of consistency.
Aside from the fact that Seto is rich and Jonouchi is not, there is effectively zero difference between them right now … unless you want to count the chronological order of their respective sins. Jonouchi antagonized Yugi, then stole something important to him. Seto stole something important to Yugi, then antagonized him.
Unless you want to get pedantic, in other words, Katsuya Jonouchi and Seto Kaiba are — textually speaking — the same person. The same obstacle. And given what happened to Jonouchi at the end of his chapter … shouldn’t we expect Seto to get off relatively lightly, too? Isn’t that what we know about Yugi Mutou? That he’s a forgiving soul? That’s what I took from the first chapter.
But what happens?
Well, of course, at this point in the story, we’ve been introduced to The Other Yugi™. Atem, as he will come to be known, the spirit trapped inside the Millennium Puzzle, who comes out and possesses Yugi’s body to extract vengeance — or justice, depending on your point of view — on people who trespass against him. We know very little of what Atem is honestly about during this section, though. We don’t even know his name, or have a nickname for him yet.
What we do know is that Atem plays games to make his points. Games which reflect the nature of the players’ souls. Games which exalt the righteous, and condemn the guilty. So what does this other Yugi do? He challenges good old Kaiba-kun to a game of cards.

There are a few important points to make about this duel. I’m not going to be giving a play-by-play. Instead, we’ll go over the highlights. First: when Seto realizes that he’s losing the duel, and can’t defeat the spirit, he decides to cheat.

And because this is a Shadow Game, or a Dark Game … a magic game, in other words, Seto is punished. But instead of just disqualifying him and ending the duel, which is what would actually happen if someone cheated like this … it goes on.

That’s … that is not part of the rules. Nowhere in the initial buildup to this match did Atem specify that Seto’s cards had to have his “heart” in them. And nowhere in the rules of this game does it say that a monster’s attack can be negated by pontificating at it.

Again. This was not established in the beginning of the duel. The rules do not state that a monster that doesn’t belong to the user will be destroyed. Atem did not make this clear when they sat down to play. This is plot armor. Or, rather, a plot weapon. Again, Seto is being punished for cheating. Of course. I cede this point.
But Atem directly benefits from these breaches of the rules. So, by continuing the duel and ultimately winning, he is also cheating. You can’t just decide something like this. Atem did not create this game. He does not have the authority to unilaterally declare how alterations to the rules are decided.
“Well, that guy cheated, so I’m going to cheat, too. And it’s okay when I do it, because he did it first.”
Are we in grade school? That’s the argument being presented, and it doesn’t matter. The duel is canceled and you start over. That is how you handle this. You don’t just arbitrarily alter the rules while the game is ongoing.
But even if you do … you certainly don’t do this when the game is over.

Seto Kaiba is forced, magically, into a literal psychotic break. He is forced through his own death at the hands of the monsters that died throughout the game. Atem claims that Seto shouldn’t worry, because “it’s only one night’s worth of nightmares … an illusion!”
That? Right there? That is horrifying.
Seto cheated at a game of cards. He didn’t commit murder. Is cheating acceptable behavior? No. But the punishment does not fit the crime. Atem condemned a child to his own hallucinatory execution. A child who, you may recall, we later find out grew up in a criminally abusive household, and has just escaped it.
Anon, you acknowledged that Atem is not to be excused, so this next part is not directed at you, but at everyone else who likes to act like Seto Kaiba should be hanged for what he did throughout the manga, but “oh, Atem’s growth is so wonderful and inspiring!”
The above example of other fans’ behavior is facetious and exaggerated and should not be taken seriously. But regardless of how I might view this whole paradigm, it doesn’t change the facts: either they both have crimes to answer for, or they both have redemption arcs worth celebrating.
I do not care what you think about Seto Kaiba. I do not care if you like him. I do not care if you hate him.  I do not care if you like or hate Atem. I do not care about Death T. I do not care about how long Atem spent trapped in the Millennium Puzzle. I do not care that Atem sacrificed his life for his country. I do not care that Atem died as a teenager. I do not care how much he eventually grows as a person. I do not care that Seto started this. I do not care that Seto cheated. I do not care that Seto lied. I do not care about any of that.
THIS IS OBJECTIVELY DISGUSTING.
Don’t tell me why you think Seto deserved it. Don’t excuse this. Don’t ignore this. Don’t you dare come into my space and tell me this is irrelevant. I will never let this slide. Seto Kaiba is a child, and he just got what little emotional equilibrium he had, after having survived Gozaburo Kaiba, shattered because he cheated at a game of cards.
Recall, if you please, my previous point.
Katsuya Jonouchi stole from Yugi Mutou, and antagonized him.
Seto Kaiba stole from Yugi Mutou, and antagonized him.
One got a best friend out of it.
One got tortured.
That is not acceptable, and it is not justice.
The Case Against Inconsistency: Mokuba Kaiba
Are we done? No. No, we are not.
There are fewer points to make in this section, so it will be shorter, but there are still important notes to take into account before we move on to the main event.
I always say: you don’t get one Kaiba without the other.
In Chapter 24, we’re introduced to Seto’s little brother.

Mokuba is portrayed, initially, just as unsympathetically as Seto is. Like his brother, this kid presents a threat. A pretty substantial one, if those weapons are real. And given the early manga’s penchant for wanton violence, they probably are. For a story about children’s games, there’s a lot of … not-so-child-friendly elements to the opening chapters.
Naturally, given that this is a series about games, there have to be stakes. And Mokuba is very quick to establish what those stakes are.

And Atem is equally quick to accept them. Now, look. Obviously brandishing CEWs, assault weapons, and butterfly knives at people are entirely unacceptable actions to take, but these aren’t even teenagers we’re dealing with. Atem is a bit too gleeful for my tastes here, considering he just promised to torture a 10-year-old boy.
These are grade-schoolers.

Grade-schoolers who, aside from Mokuba, are obviously unnerved (and possibly frightened) by the spirit of the Puzzle. Now, I’m not saying it would have been smart on Yugi’s part to deny these kids whatever they wanted. But this is why you have a cursed pendant with a ghost inside it to help you out.
But, perhaps it isn’t fair to say that Yugi’s new vengeful friend should have worked harder to dissolve the situation. Maybe that’s not the right argument to make. After all, Mokuba started it. And who knows what he might do if he’s denied?!
Well. Considering what happens when Atem wins this game … I don’t think he really avoided any potential consequences by going along with what his attackers wanted.

See, you say that, Atem, but I don’t believe you when you say that Mokuba isn’t your enemy. You’ve treated him the same way as you have every other enemy you’ve come across in this story. The only net positive we can say here is that Mokuba doesn’t die.
Now. What’s my point with bringing this one up? Well, one, I don’t think the 10-year-old kid should have been forced into a confined space. What if he’s claustrophobic? What if his father used to lock him in his bedroom? What if, what if, what if. Atem doesn’t know anything about this boy except that he’s lashing out on his brother’s behalf.
And two: when you play with fire …
Obscenely rich, angry, chronically abused fire …
You get this.
The Case Against Inconsistency: Mind Crush
When the chapter that opens up the oh-so-infamous Death T starts, we get treated to two bits of information that are … extremely important to all of this. We are first reminded of what Atem forced Seto through, at the end of their first duel.

And then we are shown that Atem was wrong about his own consequences. He said, and I quote:
“It’s only one night’s worth of nightmares.”
Remember that? And yet, we see that Seto has had that nightmare at least twice. Time is nebulous in the manga, so it’s difficult to figure out how often he’s had this nightmare, but that isn’t important. He’s had it multiple times.
This is a problem, because our hero said it would happen once.
But it didn’t happen once.
Why is this such a big deal to me? Because when your hero’s entire problem with an antagonist is how dishonest he is, you cannot afford to be dishonest yourself. But here, Atem is shown to have been either ignorant of his own abilities, which is reckless, or outright lying.
Which is hypocritical.
My point is not that Seto Kaiba is blameless. It is not that I want people to stop paying attention to his faults. My point in all of this is that Death T — to which Anon is referring — did not happen in a vacuum, and Atem was partially responsible for it. Death T was not constructed to beat Yugi Mutou in a game. It was, and is, not a sign of Seto’s unhealthy obsession with victory.
Death T was a direct result of two things: Gozaburo Kaiba, and the “Experience of Death” penalty game.

Seto says nothing about losing. He says nothing about being beaten. His whole motive for Death T is to stop “that nightmare.” What does this mean? That if he had not had that nightmare, he would not have that motive. Would he have done something else? Maybe. Probably, even. But we’re not talking about possibilities. We’re talking about what happened.
And what happened is: Seto cheated at a game, was punished by a hallucination, had nightmares about that hallucination, and figured out a plan to stop them. Would Death T have worked? No. Is it acceptable behavior? No. Am I saying Seto Kaiba should be absolved for what he put the main cast through? No.
I am saying that it wasn’t just Seto Kaiba who was responsible for this.

There was also Gozaburo Kaiba, who tortured his adopted son to mold him into the heir that he wanted.

And Atem, who tortured his classmate to mold him into the opponent that he wanted.
You aren’t going to find many people willing to give Gozaburo Kaiba the benefit of the doubt. He’s pegged pretty constantly for the villain he is. Seto is also held accountable for the horrible things that he did. Death T was, and is, an atrocity. But Atem’s hands are not clean. He directly antagonized an unstable teenager with PTSD, one with the resources, the conviction, and the warped sense of right and wrong (courtesy of his aforementioned abusive father) to push right back.
Was it right? No. Was it fair? No. Was it acceptable? No.
So why talk about it?
Because when you say things like “Kaiba has literally pushed all his buttons,” you absolve Atem of what he did.
Atem tortured, and killed, several people in the name of justice.
The Kaibas were just the first of his victims to fight back.
Seto Kaiba pushed Atem too far? Fine.
Atem pushed him too far, too.
And only one of them ever gets taken to task for it.
If it makes me the Devil’s Advocate to focus on that, and harp on it, and get angry about it … so be it. I’m used to being the voice of dissent. And just so you all understand: I don’t like the way Seto is portrayed in the manga. I hate it. I hate him. That’s why I don’t deal with him. That’s why the anime is my focus. That’s why I don’t talk about the manga. I don’t like Seto, I don’t like Atem, I don’t like Honda, I don’t like Otogi, I don’t like Pegasus, I don’t like the Ishtars.
I don’t … like … the manga.
But, that being said.
No matter what he did.
No matter how far he went.

How To Have A Virtual Hen Do
Do not let lockdown hinder your celebrations. I repeat, do NOT let lockdown hinder your celebrations. Who is up for being virtually reunited with their best girls, playing some hilarious games and dancing until they fall asleep on their sofa? I see your hands up. Here we go…
Virtual Hen Do
Over 12,000 of you have watched our zoomcast about how to throw a virtual hen do whilst in lockdown. Not sure what a zoomcast is? Let me explain. Charlotte and I usually put out a fortnightly podcast for you all but it felt a little bit strange to us to keep producing it through lockdown. We like to be together, the conversation flows much better when we’re face to face and so instead of us recording via zoom and then putting it out as a podcast, we thought we’d go ahead and share our recordings with you instead and sharing them on our IGTV. Putting faces to voices seemed like a good thing to do at this point. So, we put our best hairbands on (Charlotte has several hilarious ones as you will see if you watch the episode), got a cocktail (or wine in a flamingo glass) and got chatting about how to throw the nest virtual hen do ever.
How To Have A Virtual Hen Do
So first things first, you need to decide on what software you’re going to use to host your event. A few options favoured by the team are Zoom, Google hangout, House Party, Whatsapp, Facebook messenger and Facetime. Zoom will give you 45 minute sessions for free. If you want one continual session that is longer than that you will have to pay – or you can jut restart your session again. You can record your zoom calls too so you can keep the memories forever. You can also have up to 1000 participants on a zoom video call with 49 guests showing on screen at any given time. If you’re feeling mega popular this might be the one for you. The other apps mentioned will only allow you up to about 10 people max per call. It’s a good idea to use a platform that you can have on a tablet or laptop or something with a bigger screen than your phone so that you can see everyone clearly.
Designate a host to keep the party moving. They can be in charge of sending out invites and overseeing your video call to make sure everyone gets to speak and the night moves at a good pace. oversee it all and make sure everyone gets heard. You host should also let your guests know what to expect during the video call or if there is anything they need to bring along.
Tips For A Great Hen Do In Lockdown
Extend your guest list
You might have friends who couldn’t make your original hen do date for one reason or another. That might not be the case anymore given the current circumstances so if you want to, why not extend those invites back out. The more the merrier right?
Have You Got A Theme?
Wether you have a theme or not this is a great opportunity to get dressed up. What were you planning on wearing to the physical event? Wear it in your living room – heels and all. If you wanted to set a theme try and make it one that your guests can easily sort out – maybe it’s something that most people already have at home, maybe its a colour theme or a ‘starts with the letter…’ theme. You could look at having a hair or make-up theme too if you wanted. If you were going full out fancy dress and everyone already got their outfits then get them on. you’re guaranteed a laugh as each of you joins the call.
Gifts For The Bride To Be
You may have organised for your gorgeous bride-to-be to receive some goodies on the day of her hen do. Maybe you’d organised a bottle champagne for the night or set up some pamper packs to enjoy a relaxing couple of hours whilst getting ready. You can still send this stuff to her. Just make sure you package it safely and remember to socially distance yourself when visiting the post office or you can always arrange for a courier to collect and deliver whilst adhering to social distancing rules.
Break The Ice
Hen dos are often a chance for the bride to bring together her wider friendship groups meaning that lots of different people can be meeting for the first time. This is obviously much easier to do IRL but there are a couple of things you can do virtually so that everyone knows who each other is and to avoid any little clicks forming over your virtual hangout. A couple of our favourite ideas for breaking the virtual ice are:
– Memories. Each member of the hen party shares their favourite memory of the bride-to-be. That lets all the guests know who you are to the bride, why you’re there and also hopefully give them a new story about their friend that they’d not heard before.
– Draw the bride. Each hen draws a picture of how they think the bride will look on her big day and presents it to the group. 1, everyone can laugh at everyone elses terrible drawing skills. 2, It will be fun for the bride to see who gets the closest and 3, it allows your guests to show off a bit of their personality.
– Signature cocktails. Each hen brings along their signature cocktail. The cocktail is given a name that may be losely related to their own (for example mine could be, Becky’s ‘I wish I was French’ Martini). They have to describe the ingredients and hint at their own personality.
Hen Do Playlist
Shakespeare said ‘If music be the food of love, play on.’ We say ‘If music be the beating heart of your party, turn it up louder’.
We couldn’t talk about the perfect hen do without mentioning music could we? It’s so important to keeping the vibe of your party alive. Choose someone (probably the host) to have it on in the background and then towards the end of the party you can crank it up and have a good old dance. Find our hen party playlist here.
Virtual Hen Do Activities
Whether you’re having a low key or a more high energy virtual hen do, we have some great suggestions for activities you can include.
High Energy Hen Do
– Mr & Mrs (or Mrs & Mrs). This traditional game is still hugely popular when it comes to hen dos and we totally get why. It’s fun, you get to learn a bit more about the couple and hopefully it creates some good laughs. It’s still super easy to do virtually. You could record your friends other half giving their answers and share you screen with the party so they can see it play back or, why not forget all the rules and bring your bride-to-be’s other half into the room and get them to do it live, then and there. All rules out the window when it comes to a lockdown hen do.
– Never Have I Ever. Who doesn’t love a game of never have I ever! Not heard of it before, the rules are really simple. Jenny starts and gives a statement about something she has never done before. She says ‘never have I ever…and then something she’s never done’. Anyone at the party who has in fact done what Jenny claims she hasn’t, takes a drink.
For example:
Jenny: ‘Never have I ever skinny dipped’. Cue Fiona and Katie sipping on their pinacoldas trying not to get noticed by the rest of the group.
Lipstincktionary
Split the group into teams and play a funny version of pictionary where you have to draw with your lipstick, using your mouth. We’re talking the old squashed lippy one from the bottom of your make up bag – don’t get your Charlotte Tilbury’s out for this one.
Beer or Prosecco (or gin or vodka or whatever is your favourite) Pong
Position your phone/ipad/laptop at the bottom of your table by the cups and each take it in turns to battle each other and see who the ultimate winner is. You can order a pong set online or you can create your own with a few paper cups and a ball.
Lockdown Dance Party
Post a note through your neighbours door to let them know you’re having a virtual party and turn that music up. Have a good dance on the sofa, on the table, up and down the stairs. Let all that energy out and have a good laugh with your besties.
Relaxed Virtual Hen Do
Film Night
Get a great film on and watch it altogether, gogglebox style. Get the popcorn out and a glass of something you enjoy and spend a couple of hours chilling out. Need some ideas for the perfect virtual hen do film? Here we go…
Bridesmaids (always), Bachelorette, Rough Night, Wedding Crashers, Just Married, Girls Trip, Clueless, Magic Mike, The Five Year Engagement, 50 First Dates, Bridget Jones, SATC, Dirty Dancing. Or if your bride has a favourite film, get that on.
Take Away
Perhaps you had arranged for a really lush meal out for the original hen do. Why not bring that meal in instead and all order a take away. Enjoy dinner with your best pals virtually and have a good natter over a chicken chow mein.

In the back of my mind, I had been thinking about starting a blog for a few years.
Several bloggers had been influential in my life and the way that I thought about work, wealth, and time management. I wanted to join the conversation and share insights from my own experiences with the blogging community! But I was intimidated by what I perceived to be high costs and a high level of difficulty to start a blog.
Does that sound like your state of mind, too?
You don’t need a full-on business plan in place to start blogging. In fact, I’ve found that researching and creating posts here at Semi-Retire Plan has actually sharpened my writing skills and my knowledge base over time.
And blogging doesn’t have to be expensive.
I’m a believer that a passion plus one big idea is all you really need before you get started blogging.
Once you start, the details will follow as you learn and grow along the way. You don’t have to launch a “finished product” on day one.
Starting a blog doesn’t require:
A huge amount of time each week
HTML or other coding experience
A detailed plan
Stress or perfection
A large monthly budget
What services will you need?
Basically, to start a blog you need (1) a domain name and (2) hosting.
Domain name
Your domain name is the web address of your blog. This site’s domain is semiretireplan.com.
Technically, you don’t even have to pay for your domain name. Services like WordPress and Blogger have free options available, but you’ll have severely limited functionality and and control over your site.
Plus, on the free plans, those services will modify your URL — so it will appear as “yourdomain.wordpress.com” or “yourdomain.blogspot.com”. These modified, free URLs signal immediately to your readers that you are a novice.
Free plans are fine if you’re starting a blog for personal use only.
But, if this blog will function as a portfolio or a professional site that you may want to monetize in the future, you’ll want to avoid these free plans. That means you’ll have to pay for your domain name, but it doesn’t need to be expensive (as we’ll see below).
Hosting
Your blog’s hosting provider is the company that owns the physical server where your blog’s files live.
There are different types of hosting plans. If you’re just getting started, “shared” hosting should meet all of your needs and be the least expensive.
Typically, your hosting company will also provide access to services like a content management system (CMS). You can use a popular, user-friendly CMS like WordPress, even if you’re not getting hosting services from WordPress.org.
Here’s how the administrator side of WordPress looks! It’s easy to navigate and very user-friendly.
Where should you get your domain name and hosting from?
I used Bluehost to set up this site, and I’m still using them for my hosting now today.
There are other companies that provide these services too, and I encourage you to shop around and check them out. That’s what I did when I was getting started! Read the reviews.
When I was getting started, I was looking for an inexpensive way to purchase my domain name and use WordPress as my CMS. Bluehost makes it easy to add on other features that you might need, like Domain Privacy + Protection (I’ll talk about this more below).
I really liked that Bluehost provides a free, professional domain name when you use their starter shared hosting service.
At the end of the day, Bluehost seemed like the best value to me, and I’ve been happy with my decision. The SR Wife is also a writer, and we recently re-launched her portfolio using their service, too.
While I’ve been working with Bluehost, I’ve found their customer service chat feature to be super helpful. I also like that it’s easy to upgrade your hosting when your traffic grows.
Ready to get started? Follow these simple steps.
First, you’ll need to choose a domain name. You might want the name to be personal, related to the niche topic you’re going to right about, and/or something fun.
You can check to see if your domain name idea is available, right here!
After you find a name that’s available, you can choose “next” to check out, but it will automatically put you on the least expensive (shared) hosting plan.
If you’d like to choose a different hosting plan or chat with a customer service rep, access Bluehost here instead of using the domain name widget above.
Hosting plan
Next, you’ll choose your hosting plan and and domain name if you didn’t already do so using the widget above.
The “Basic” shared hosting level should be totally sufficient if you’re just getting started. Once your blog starts to take off, you can upgrade later if you need to!
Then, you’ll choose your domain name.
Extras and Domain Privacy
You’ll be asked if you want to sign up for any package extras.
I like the Domain Privacy + Protection option — that will allow your real name and personal contact information to not be shown publicly as the owner of the website. If you don’t choose this option, people can look up that information on sites like whois.net.
Here’s how the semiretireplan.com listing appears if someone looks up who owns it, since I use the Domain Privacy + Protection option. My personal information isn’t shown publicly — it shows Bluehost’s information instead.
I don’t use any of the other Package Extras options, personally. You can skip them for now and add them later if you decide you want them.
Complete your registration
To finish signing up, input your account and payment information.
Congratulations, you’re officially a blogger and a webmaster!
Set up your site using the WordPress CMS
Log in to your Bluehost account.
Input some starter details for your site.
You can easily change this information later, if you want to.
Next, you’ll choose a theme for your site.
You change this later too, so I recommend just quickly choosing a free one.
Now you’re ready to work on your site using the WordPress CMS!
Temporary URL
For the first day or so, you may notice that your WordPress portal URL and your live site URL don’t match the domain name that you signed up for. This is only temporary. Your full domain name will be live and public within about 48 hours.
How to log in in to WordPress later
If you want to log in to the admin/Wordpress side of your site later, the default URL to do so will be yourdomainname.com/wp-admin/.
From there, you should be able to log in.
You can change your login URL using plugins (see below) later, if you’d like to. This can help with site security.
Admin profile
Your site will come with an “admin” user profile. Hackers or bad actors know that this is the default username for WordPress sites. For security purposes, I recommend creating a new user account using one of your personal email addresses.
You can do this in WordPress by clicking the “Users” item on the left navigation menu. Then, mark this new user as a Administrator.
Log out, then log in with your new Administrator email address. If that works correctly, go ahead and delete the “admin” default user. This way, no one will know what your admin username is since you have removed the default option.
Plugins
Plugins are third party site supplements that can add functionality to your site theme.
Navigate to the Plugins menu item in your left navigation bar in WordPress. You may have a few installed by default.
Plugins cause your page load time to be slightly longer. So, plugins aren’t something to be concerned about, but you do want to only use them when necessary. So, I recommend deactivating all of them until you get your site set up (see below).
Once you have a few basic pages set up and a theme chosen, some common types of plugins you may want to use are a contact form plugin, the Classic Editor plugin (changes your WordPress page editing default interface), or social media plugins. Plus, there are seemingly endless other plugins you can add to your site using the plugin menu.
Personally, I use the Classic Editor plugin (that’s the full name of it), Contact Form 7, Easy Social Icons, and Social Pug. They all have free versions that work well.
Plugins are made from various third-party developers, so there’s no guarantee that they’ll work as expected or that they’ll be secure. So I do recommend looking at ratings and reading reviews before installing any new ones.
Plugins can become time consuming to research and set up, especially right when you’re getting started. I would skip these and come back to them once you have content and a theme chosen.
Add some basic content and choose a theme
WordPress is set up with two page categories — Pages and Posts. Pages operate as standalone, independent parts of your site. Posts function more like a series of blog posts.
Most WordPress themes and plugins treat Pages and Posts differently. You should use Pages for one-off navigational items, like an About page, Contact page, Disclaimers and Disclosures, etc. You should use posts for your actual content that people will browse.
Create one or two test versions of Pages and Posts so you can see how they’ll show up in your theme.
Next, go to Appearance then to Customize to set up the appearance of your site and theme.
I recommend choosing some colors, a tag line, and a logo — even if they’re just placeholders. That way, you can see how your theme treats each element.
Adjust some other settings if you’d like, too.
Themes
This is the best time to start comparing and testing out a few site themes. I recommend doing so before going down the rabbit hole of plugins. Depending on which theme you choose, you may not end up needing to make many modifications.
You can search for and install new themes in the Appearance menu item, under Themes.
Paid vs free
Some people swear by paid themes and paid plugins. They can be great, but there are good free options too. I used free themes and plugins only for several months, and they worked great.
I recently upgraded to a paid version of my theme, because I wanted to customize it more. I still use mostly free plugins.
Unless you know exactly what you’re looking for, I’d recommend sticking with free options for now. You can always pay to upgrade later. There are tons of free themes and plugins available to start with.

You now choose whether your Page will represent a Business or Brand (services and products, generally) or a Community or Public Figure (described as connecting and sharing with people, an organization, team, or group). For our purposes here, we will go with Business or Brand.
You should have a name chosen by this point (most likely the name of your company or blog or brand itself — such as Elegant Themes). We don’t suggest making a new Page for a single product (such as our Divi theme) because that can be showcased under the umbrella of a larger page that has more reach and utility beyond that single product.
After this step, you will choose a Profile Image and a Cover Photo. You do have the option to skip them for the moment to gather your resources later. At some point, these are a necessity.

Step 3: Customize Your Page

When you get through all the tabs, you’ll see a link that says See All Information. Since there’s a lot more than just websites and phones to your business, we should probably click through.
Page Name and Team Member Updates
When you do see all the information available, you may feel overwhelmed. That’s okay. You don’t have to fill it all in now, or really…ever. Some of it may not pertain to you or your Facebook marketing strategy. Much of it, however, will. Again, this is the info that shows up in your About section.
The two most important sections here, at least starting out, are General and Team Member sections. Under General, you can change your page’s name and @username. I bring this up now because you might have chosen the wrong username for your page, or you might have used a page name that might not fully encompass your Facebook marketing goals.
For instance, you might have named your Page Elmo’s Superblog – Fun, Frolick, and Learning with Elmo, but realize that the better page name would be simply Elmo’s Superblog. This is how you’d go about changing that. Also, you can change the @username here, too, and it is entirely independent of the Page name. So you can still have the username @superblog even if you change the name. The reverse is also true. You can change your username but keep the page name. So you could go to @elmosuperblog without worrying about changing your entire page name. In general, however, it is a good tactic to keep them pretty similar. That way, people won’t get confused. And it makes tagging and finding your page easier.
Regarding the Team Members tab, notice that it says if you add yourself to the page as a Team Member, the Page will appear on your profile as well as your own name nad profile picture being featured on the Page. You can still run the page as an Admin or other user role if you are not listed as a Team Member. So if privacy is an issue, or you just want to separate work and personal halves of Facebook, consider whether you should add yourself here or not. Either way is fine.
Other Social Accounts

On Facebook Messenger, having a greeting can actually personalize the encounter. People can even opt-in for bots to periodically message them. The greeting, however, will only be down to visitors on the very first time they send your Page a message. Never again. Many pages will use a question for their opening, trying to elicit a response from the user to initiate a dialogue. One very good marketing strategy is to provide a unique discount code for the first time someone contacts you via Messenger. That way, you build goodwill with them even if they are contacting you for a more negative reason.
Posting to Your Facebook Page
Like we mentioned above, the Facebook Page itself is kind of your headquarters for everything that you do on the platform. All of your Facebook marketing in some way leads back to the Page. So you probably want to work to make the Page as central to your strategy as possible. Primarily, that means posting to the Page itself to appear in your followers’ feeds to generate shares, likes, comments, and other forms of engagement.
With that in mind, you should know there are a truly absurd number of options for you to post with. We are going to be primarily concerned with text posts, image/video posts, live video streams, and stories.
With each kind of these posts, you also get to choose your posting audience (public, restricted, or specifically targeted) and posting time (scheduled for a future date, backdated to show earlier in your page’s timeline, or simply saved as a draft for later review).
Many of these are self-explanatory (scheduling, backdating, for instance), we want to dig into the ones that can really take your Facebook marketing into a new league.
There’s no set rule on how many posts you should or shouldn’t publish, but keep in mind that if you post too many in sequence, they get truncated in people’s news feeds. Instead of showing your full post, it may say something like Elegant Themes has posted 3 updates today with a thumbnail of the Page. That severely limits click-through and engagement. You want to make your posting regular, but not overwhelming. It’s definitely a delicate balance. But you will get it as you practice and learn your audience.
Text Posts
Text posts are the bread-and-butter of the Facebook world. They’re what started it all. Because of that history, you need to incorporate text posts into your Facebook marketing rotation. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but when you click inside the box that says Write a post…, the default is plain ol’ text.
You might ask your followers a question for feedback. Perhaps you need to announce that your store isn’t opening on time that day or that a menu item is no longer available. You might even just tell people good morning and spark up a casual conversation in the comments.
Text posts do well at many lengths, but if you want to do something truly long-form, you’re better off writing it on your own blog or website and linking to it. That way you get the SEO benefits in your own domain. Individual text posts don’t do well in external search engines, just with the internal FB search.
Image/Video Posts
The real money (both literal and figurative), however, is in video. And to a lesser extent, image content. It’s why Instagram (a Facebook-owned company, by the way) is so successful. People love interactive media, and they can far more easily consume your content if it’s visual. So you need to be posting images and videos as your primary content.
Not only do images and video posts get higher engagement just because people are people and act like people, but also because Facebook prioritizes them in the algorithms that dictate what content shows up in users’ news feeds. These are the posts that get shared. Even Events and links focus on featured images and videos.
So knowing all this, what can you do in terms of publishing that can help your images and video succeed? Honestly, it’s pretty simple:
High-resolution images and HD video – no one likes to see grainy and blurry content, and no one likes to share it
Bright colors and crazy designs – you want to catch people’s attention, and this will do it
Only necessary text – people scroll quickly, so your message needs to be concise enough for them to read it in seconds
Short(ish) video duration – 30-second clips are amazing because people can watch them and share them without getting bored or distracted
Long(ish) video duration – if you go into the 5-10 minute (or longer) realm, do so knowing that not every video you post should be this long. Only your very best content will get engagement at this lenth, and even then views will taper in the later portion
These aren’t hard-and-fast rules. There will always be exceptions to them. However, these do tend to be the hallmarks of the most successful individual video posts on Facebook. If your main focus is video (such as with Wistia or a media company), you have to determine what works best. Your audience may enjoy longer videos with more substance. But as a general rule for most people who aren’t video specialists, these tend to apply.
Additionally, if you have a consistent library of videos over 3 minutes long, you can have the option for mid-roll advertisements to monetize your page. These will play at set points during the video, and your visitors can wait to finish the rest of your video afterward. Note that doing this can lower engagement after the ad breaks because many people simply stop watching. So like we said above, only the best content you have should be long-form.
Live Video Streams
Probably the best way to market your business using Facebook (or YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, or any other platform that supports it) is live video. Livestreaming is incredibly popular, and if your goal is to engage your audience, livestreaming is the best way to do it. Why? Because you can actually talk with them in real time. You get to know them. They get to know you.
Livestreaming with Facebook is incredibly easy. All you need to do is click on the Live button when you start a post to be taken into the pre-show settings.
Once there, you will see two tabs. The Connect tab is for if you use an external service or software to stream. You may use Restream or OBS or even Wirecast. If you are using just Facebook, you will just fill out the info for the stream and go live with the camera attached to your computer.
One of the best features for Facebook marketing regarding live video is that you can crosspost to other, related Pages that you run. If you click on the Settings tab in the Connect window, you will see a list of Pages that can host your stream simultaneously. This is a great idea for those of you who may have different departments, each running a different Facebook page, for instance.
You can also go Live on the mobile app, too, and it’s as simple as pressing Go Live when in the app. As long as your audience has notifications set up to be alerted when you go live, or (even better) you schedule your streams so they know when to tune in, you will be able to truly find champions for your brand who come back regularly to see your new content and say hello to you.
Stories
Snapchat took the internet by storm, and pretty soon nearly every single platform had stolen (appropriated, maybe?) the concept of temporary, time-limited pictures and images. On Facebook and Instagram, these are called Stories. And on Facebook, not only can you add to the Story that belongs to your personal profile, but you can also add to the Story of a Page that you manage.
Best of all, these Page-created Stories show up in your followers’ Story feed, right alongside their friends’. In fact, the Stories (as of this writing), don’t seem to be subject to as harsh an algorithm as news feed posts (images, video, text, etc.) like we discussed above. For the most part, they appear in chronological order, based on posting time.
The only real caveat to using Stories as a marketing tool is that they are mobile only. That’s right. You can only post to your Page’s Story through the official Facebook smartphone app. Lucky for all of us, it’s incredibly easy to do. But you do have to post to your Page’s Story differently than you do your personal one. First, click on the hamburger menu in the lower-right of the corner (if you’re on iOS. Android and other platforms may be in a different spot, but the functionality is the same).
Next, choose the Page to which you want to post the Story.
Once you’ve made it to your page, scroll until you see the area in which you can post an update. It should say Write something… or a similar message. Beneath it, you will see a box called Your Page’s Story with a button that says Create Story. Press it.
You will be taken to a camera window now (provided you allow access, otherwise you can’t post a Story). You can either take a photo or video here, or you can import one from your phone’s storage. Once you’ve chosen and annotated the Story you want to post, you have two options to post it: either immediately via the Page Story shortcut (1) or by confirming details of the Story by hitting Next (2) at the bottom of the screen.
If you choose the shortcut, you get a confirmation before it goes directly to the Story.
And if you choose to press the Next button, you get a few more options to verify before moving forward with the Story. You can make sure that you’re on the right Page, first of all. The last thing you’d want to do is put up a personal story to your Page or something similar. You also get the option of sharing the Story to your Page’s news feed so that it shows up as a traditional Image post. You will have to experiment with which ones you should cross-post. Each audience is different. Stories are for more candid, slice-of-life topics. Maybe behind-the-scenes videos or fun staff profiles. News Feed posts, on the other hand, are the evergreen or more traditional posts.
Once you’ve made sure the Story is ready for your adoring audience, share it, and everyone who follows your Page should see it at the very top of their Facebook app. It will appear chronologically (as of this writing), so determining when your audience is most active can be crucial.
Also, Stories only last for 24 hours from the time of posting, so if you want to stay in people’s Story feeds, you need to post regularly to your story throughout the day.
Link Sharing
Very quickly, sharing links to your blog or website is another great way to generate engagement. But not just any articles. Only share either your newest posts (which you should do each time you publish, and then regularly afterward to make sure it get seen) or your best posts. In fact, the best way that you can leverage sharing your own content to Facebook is by integrating your site with Facebook Instant Articles. These work like the Google AMP pages where your site is pre-cached and loads instantly for users on the platform.
You will see these in your timeline often. They’re the posts with the lightning bolt next to them. By stripping out unnecessary code, Facebook Instant Articles mean that your users won’t have to wait on your page to load and get to the content they want to consume more quickly. In general, if a page takes more than 2 seconds to load, the average user will navigate away. Facebook Instant Articles fixes that.
Even if you don’t want to keep yourself that invested in the Facebook ecosystem, sharing your best and newest content will keep you in people’s minds, give them something to share, and get your brand’s message and story across, while funneling users from FB to your own website.
Of everything that you do on Facebook, link sharing is the most hit-and-miss. You pretty much need to do it but don’t rely on this being the number one source of traffic to your site or your primary lead generator. It takes a bit of work to make many of your links get through the news feed algorithm without paying for them to do so, and the time and effort that you spend on that work may be better spent elsewhere. So share away, but make this a lesser part of your overall Facebook marketing strategy when compared to live video, for instance.
Pinned Posts
Any of the above types of posts (excluding Stories that are not posted to the news feed) are capable of being pinned to the top of your Page. What that means is that anyone who visits your page will see this post first, regardless of what else has been published since. Most Pages use this for announcements or product launches. Many restaurants keep menus pinned or dinner specials. Elegant Themes often uses our Pinned Post to showcase new features for Divi that have been released.
To pin a post, just click the ellipsis (the three dots) and select Pin to Top of Page.
To unpin it, do the same thing, but select to unpin it. You also have the option of replacing the pinned post when you try to pin a new one because you can have only 1 Pinned Post at a time.
There is no right or wrong way to use the Pinned Post, but the most important thing to remember is that you should always keep it updated. Visitors will see it as incredibly unprofessional to have outdated information pinned. For example, don’t still have your Christmas sale pinned in February. Or your summer menu in December. That shows them a lack of attention, which can have an impact on your engagement and business itself.
Facebook Marketing with Groups
Groups are kind of like Facebook’s take on message boards or forums. They aren’t quite chat rooms, but they give users a place to post messages, pictures, videos, and then comment back and forth to have a discussion. Both personal accounts and Pages can set up and administrate a Group, which works out really well, depending on whether you want a front-facing individual or overall brand persona.
First, creating a Group is easy. Go to facebook.com/groups and click on the green Create Group button in the upper-right corner of the page. Additionally, you have three sections on this page:
Favorites
Groups You Manage
Your Groups
So basically, this is the hub of all your Group activity, whether you’re a member or an admin. Anything you set as a Favorite will show up as a shortcut on your primary timeline, which simplifies your life as you manage everything on Facebook itself.
You need to make two decisions when you create a group: the name (which can be changed later, but it may not be a great idea, so choose wisely), and the privacy. We suggest creating the group as Secret first so that you can get it ready for your community before it appears in search results.
The difference in Secret and Closed is that in a Secret group, only people you invite and add to the group can find it or even see it. It’s as though it doesn’t exist to non-members. Secret Facebook groups do not show up in search results.
Closed groups, on the other hand, appear in searches, and people can be invited and added just as in a Secret one, but anyone can also request to join. That request must be approved (or denied) by a group manager. If you expect a lot of requests, you can set other moderators to weed through them.
And Public groups are, well, public. Anyone can join, they show up in searches, and often require the most moderation. Depending on your topic and community goals, it may work out well for you to be Public. But we feel that Closed gives you the best community and ability to market toward specifically those who are most engaged with your brand.
Keep in mind that you must add at least one friend to a group to create it. Facebook does not want you to create solo groups (and that would be lonely, anyway). Many folks either add a spouse or significant other, or even a co-worker or colleague from the organization who may also be a manager.
Now, your Group is live. Outside of inviting people, you have two major tasks to complete that aren’t very hard. The first is to add a cover photo for the group. Many people choose to use their Group’s cover photo as a banner for the rules and etiquette expected of members. Or if you have a schedule for particular topics on certain days, you can use the Cover Photo to highlight those as in the image below.
One other feature Groups have is that you can go Live only to specific groups. If you want to only appear to a subset of your audience (maybe for a Patreon reward), this is how. Many people set up Groups just for this feature.
Choosing Your Persona in a Facebook Group
In a Facebook Group (or on a Facebook Page), you have an option to interact with the group as yourself (your personal profile) or as the brand hosting the Group or Page. If you click on the box to the upper-right that says Interacting as…, you will get a modal where you can choose who you appear as in comments and posts.
For Facebook marketing purposes, the choice is really up to you and your particular strategies. If you choose to interact personally, you can build a strong rapport between your users and yourself (and your staff, if they interact the same way). You will appear as people who are actively engaged in the community. That is the right fit for many brands and businesses, as that personal touch can be a huge boon to the way their products are received.
However, if you choose to interact as your brand, you don’t necessarily lose that personability. When a brand name interacts with people, it can make customers feel more special and can highlight that you’re a part of the community you’ve built. Not everyone knows your real name, but if they are a member of the Group or if they follow your Page, they know the branding. It can feel special for many users to get called out and talked to by major products they love.
Just choose which direction works best for your brand and try to be consistent. You can even mix it up. The daily conversation can come from your staff, but important messages or Group administrivia may need to be posted by the brand identity. The most important thing to remember when choosing your persona for Facebook Group interaction is to be purposeful and mindful of who is delivering your message and how they are delivering it.
The Groups’ Chat Tab
Because the Group’s primary function is a mini-Facebook timeline, the developers have also implemented a real-time Chat tab that lets users create conversations amongst themselves. These work similarly to Facebook Messenger, except that the conversations are essentially open-to-the-public chatrooms.
The default choice is to create chats with friends you know in the group; however, any of the chats can be seen and joined by anyone in the group. If you want a private group message, you will need to use the traditional Messenger app.
When you press the blue Create a Group Chat button, a modal appears for you to choose the initial members of the conversation. You will name it as well. If you want a real-time discussion on the year’s best WordPress themes or an on-going help and support room, just name it appropriately, add your staff (or members), and finish it up. Using Group Chats will keep your members’ timelines and news feeds clear of clutter, and their notifications won’t constantly alert them to new comments. They will see the new conversations in Messenger instead.
Facebook Marketing with Events
While not possible for everyone, using Events is a great way to get the word out about, well, major events that your brand is holding. These don’t necessarily have to be in-person events. Many Pages run virtual parties where a Live video Q&A goes on, or you might create a Facebook Event for a huge sale that’s coming up that you want people to know about. Especially if it’s a limited time deal.
Both personal profiles and Pages can host Events, and you can tie the Events to Groups as well. That way, you can get your entire Facebook marketing circle involved with one another and really reap the benefit of having built a community. The true draw of using Events on Facebook to market, though, is how Pages’ Events show up in followers’ notifications.
Not only do they show up when added, but if someone marks they are Interested or Going, they also get an alert to tell them the Event is upcoming so they don’t forget. In almost every way, Events are set-it-and-forget-it marketing. Even better, though, Events let hosts and guests post to the Event page as though it were a Group. Albeit a temporary one.
To create an Event as your Page, just hit the Events tab to the left-side of your Page. Then click on the blue Create Event button.
The modal you get now is full of details that your audience needs to know about the Event itself.
Also, you have the chance to add an Event photo. If you do not, Facebook defaults to your Page cover photo. It is a really good idea to use a new promo picture for each Event. Not only will that make your Event stand out and show that you’re serious about it, but it also won’t blend in for people who already follow your Page. They will not just assume it’s something they have already seen.
The rest of the information will depend on your event.

It should be pretty obvious that filling out each of these bits of info is incredibly important. Pay particular attention to the title (be as specific as possible) and the description. You want people to know exactly what kind of Event you’re hosting and what they can expect. The more details the better.
But here’s the thing: you may have incredibly high engagement within the Event itself. Lots of people will mark Going. Even more will say they’re Interested. And very few of those people will actually show up to the Event itself. If it’s in-person, at least. Virtual events tend to be more accurate.
But even if they don’t show up, simply interacting with your Event makes it pop up in their friends’ news feed. Which gets you exposure to a potentially new audience. If they see and like the Event, there’s a good chance they will navigate to your Page and Like it. And while they’re there, maybe they go into your Group. And eventually, they could become a customer.
Obviously, these leads diminish as the steps go through like everything else. Regardless, Facebook Events are a great way to link up the disparate parts of your Facebook marketing strategy.
Use an Editorial/Social Posting Calendar
Posting willy-nilly is not a good marketing strategy. The old saying is that content is king, but really…it’s consistency who sits on the throne. You need to post regularly and make updates so that your audience knows to expect them. You also need to make sure that you miss as few days as possible in posting. The internet moves fast. And people will forget you. It’s not a nice thought, but it’s certainly the truth.
The best way to keep yourself regular is to use an editorial calendar. Or in this case, a social posting calendar. You don’t have to choose anything expensive or fancy, but just something that can keep your updates sorted so that you and your team know when and what to post.
You can choose one of roughly a zillion social scheduling and calendar services out there. Depending on your budget and needs, any of these options will do just fine. I personally know people who have successfully run major companies’ and projects’ social and content calendars using each of these platforms.

Basecamp
Google Sheets
Wunderlist
Additionally, you might also get use out of a CRM suite. Apps like HubSpot and Zoho integrate socially so you can run your entire Facebook marketing campaign from within that platform and track analytics and process leads.
But even if you just write out a schedule of what kind of post you need to make and when on a piece of paper and stick it on your desk with tape, as long as you follow what it says, you’ll do great.
Use a Facebook Login on Your Own Website
If you’re really dedicated to Facebook marketing, the devs at FB have made it incredibly easy to integrate everything of yours and theirs together. Between the Facebook Pixel LINK LINK LINK to the OpenGraph login, you can really take advantage of all the tools at your disposal.
Letting your users log in via Facebook is actually very simple. The first thing you will choose is what kind of permissions you need access to. You can request dozens upon dozens of data points. But don’t. Really. Users tend to opt-out if you can’t guarantee how you’re using their data (not to mention the GDPR requiring disclosure of it, too).
No matter what you choose to access, whether it’s just the email address, or the user’s friends and Page Likes (or something else entirely), you just need to start with clicking the My Apps > Create New App button in the upper-right of the Facebook Developers’ home screen.
From there, you will name your login app (but make sure you don’t include any trademarked terms so that you don’t get in trouble with the folks upstairs) and put in your email address. You’re ready to now press Create App ID.
Next, select that you want to create a Facebook login and press Confirm.
On the next page, you will enter your details, your contact info (for the GDPR), and the website URL where the login and app will live. To do so, scroll to the bottom of the page, click where it says + Add Platform, and pick website.
Or you can press Quick Start after you enter the URL, and you can get started…quickly.
You get the JavaScript code to add to your site immediately.
After which, you can test the integration with a simple Like button. And then move on to actually install the Login button the same way.
From that point on, it’s just going through what Facebook calls the Plugin Configurator and putting the code where you want it on your website.
Once that’s done, your users will be able to easily interact with your site and app as seamlessly as possible, letting you better keep tabs on how your Facebook marketing strategies are paying off.
Facebook Ads
So the real elephant in the room is the Facebook Ad network. They’re everywhere. In your news feed, in the news itself, and conversation on every single platform out there. People are talking about Facebook ads. And for good reason, too. They have an insane ROI, but they also take a lot of work to get right and have that return.
There are multiple kinds of Facebook ads, so let’s look at what they are and if they’re right for you.
You can find the Facebook Ad Center in the toolbar of your Page. It will be a tab near the end. When you click on it, you’ll be taken to an analytics page and a lot of options to run ads. Other tabs have links back here, too. Insights is the primary one you will use that way.
When you click on + Create Add, you see the different types of ads you can add.
If you’re willing to pay for Facebook ads, you can put all sorts of things into a very specific audience’s news feed.
Boost any post you create with your Page to get more engagement
Promote that your visitors can send you one-on-one private messages through Messenger
Just promote the Page itself and let people Like it from their news feeds
Get website visitors by showcasing your external site, and each click leads them to your home page
Include an email collection form so that you can contact interested user directly
Each of these ad types works and has a high chance of working because of how you can drill down into your audience. No matter which type you choose, the most important aspects of your ad campaign are
Audience and demographic targeting
Duration of the campaign
Budget
Choosing your audience is the most important aspect of Facebook marketing with ads. You can basically drill down and target a very specific portion of the Facebook user base. The main ways you do this are by choosing
whether the ads are shown to just men, just women, or to everyone
the age range from which you want to display ads to, where between 13 years old to 65+
the location of whom you want to target, from a country to a state/province, to a county, or even city
their public interests and Page likes
When you finish choosing these (and you should absolutely spend a lot of time making sure that you create and save the best audience you can so that you can refine it over time), Facebook will present you with an overall estimate of the maximum number of people within your reach. For the example below, we have targeted a potential 1.4 million people.
The budget is probably the most limiting factor because you only have so much cash that can go toward advertising. There is a ceiling on how much return you can get for your investment. It will take lots of experimenting to figure out what that is. Your budget ties directly to the duration of your campaign, too. You have the option to run an ad for 1, 7, or 14 days. Facebook will distribute your total budget over the course of that time. They will also tell you how many people you can expect to reach. That number (obviously an estimate) is based on the audience you chose. They also amortize your daily spend based on these factors.
And when you finish everything and set the ad to go live, your Ad Center tab will report the results back to you.
Additionally, you should be able to track the performance of your campaigns in a general sense by checking out the Insights tab. Here you willsee trends and data for your Page and overall engagements. You can also compare yourself to competitor Pages to see where you both stand.
As you track the numbers and look at your Page analytics and refine your audience, you will see an increase in ROI across the board with Facebook ads.

It may take some time to get used to it and integrate it all into your strategies, but when you do, you won’t be sorry. And neither will your audience.
