Paul trying and sometimes failing to be chill about Yoko
Link to masterpost of quote compilations
“I told John on the phone the other day that at the beginning of last year I was annoyed with him. I was jealous because of Yoko, and afraid about the break-up of a great musical partnership.”
1970, Paul to Ray Connolly in the Evening Standard
I’d been able to accept Yoko in the studio, sitting on a blanket in front of my amp. I’d worked hard to come to terms with that. But then when we broke up and everyone was now flailing around, John turned nasty. I don’t really understand why. Maybe because we grew up in Liverpool, where it was always good to get in the first punch of a fight.
The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present
"It just became impossible for me to work with Yoko sitting there watching us," says Paul. "I wanted to write simple things like 'I love you girl' and every time I knew she was listening I felt I had to come out with someone clever and avant garde! "I'm not blaming Yoko -- I'm blaming me. It was no more John's fault for falling in love with Yoko than it was mine for falling in love with Linda. It just meant that we didn't work together anymore. We tried but it didn't work."
Paul McCartney, in his first magazine interview since the split, tells FLIP's Keith Altham... "THE BEATLES ARE FINISHED!"
We didn’t accept Yoko totally, but like I say, how many groups do you know, these days [who would]? I mean, it’s a joke. It’s like Spinal Tap! I mean, it’s Spinal Tap! A joke!
September, 1986 (MPL Communications, London)
And in John’s thing, you know, when as – you obviously know – he was going through a lot of pain when he said a lot of that stuff. And he felt that we were, um, being kind of vindictive towards him and Yoko. In actual fact I just answered a question on an American TV thing – I think we were quite good, looking back on it, and knowing people in life. Many people would’ve just downed tools with a situation like that and just have said: “Look man, she’s not sitting on our amps while we’re making a film.” I mean, that wouldn’t be unheard of. I mean, Sean Penn... do you know what I mean? Most people would just say, “We’re not having this person here. Don’t care how much you love her.”
But we were actually quite supportive. Not supportive enough, you know; it would have been nice to have been really supportive because then we could look back and say, “Weren’t we really terrific?” But looking back on it, I think we were okay. We were never really that mean to them. But I think a lot of the time John suspected meanness where it wasn’t really there.
September, 1986 (MPL Communications, London)
I’ve already mentioned how in September 1969 we were in a meeting and talking about future plans, and John said, ‘Well, I’m not doing it. I’m leaving. Bye.’ In the ensuing moments, he was giggling and saying how this felt really thrilling, like telling someone you’re going to divorce them and then laughing. At the time, obviously, that was wildly hurtful. Talk about a knockout blow. You’re lying on the canvas, and he’s giggling and telling you how good it feels to have just knocked you out. It took a while, but I suppose I eventually got with the programme. This was my best mate from my youth, the collaborator with whom I’d done some of the best work of the twentieth century (he said, modestly). If he fell in love with this woman, what did that have to do with me? Not only did I have to let him do it, but I had to admire him for doing it. That was the position I eventually reached. There was nothing else I could do but be cool with it.
Paul McCartney, on “Get Back”. In The Lyrics (2021).
MANSFIELD: But, you know, [after John showed me the pictures of himself and Yoko nude for the album cover of Two Virgins], I asked Paul about this. And this, to me, is indicative of their relationship, maybe as much as anything I [had] ever heard. I said, “Paul, you know, what do you think about this?” And Paul says, “I don’t know.” He said, “I don’t really agree with John. But I just am going to figure that John’s ahead of me on this, and that someday I’ll understand and I’ll catch up. So, you know, I’m okay.” ROSEN: And what did that reaction tell you about their relationship? MANSFIELD: That it was an extremely deep relationship.
Ken Mansfield (record label executive and Apple Records U.S. manager), interview w/ James Rosen for Fox News. (December 4th-5th, 2007)
John and Yoko had to visit Sir Joseph Lockwood of EMI with the nude photos to ensure that he would allow their use and there wouldn’t be any censorship problems. Although he personally didn’t like the album or photographs, Paul accompanied the two of them to their meeting. Sir Joseph thought that the fans would be outraged and the Beatles’ reputation would be damaged, but Yoko told him: ‘It’s art.’ Lockwood said: ‘Well, I should find some better bodies to put on the cover than your two. They’re not very attractive. Paul McCartney would look better naked than you.”
The Paul McCartney Encyclopedia by Bill Harry. (also... rekt lmao)
So that – I think, in order to kind of say to Yoko, “Look, my life is now yours,” he had to say things like, “The Beatles were bastards, we were total jerks, we never wrote anything good…” Which I think was rubbish, basically. And as I say, you have to realize that some of that time he was on heroin – so he’s not going to be just talking absolutely lucidly all the time, there. Some of the times, he was having other sorts of problems…
1989, Paul
And I think we would all have continued the Beatles, but Yoko came along, John fell wildly in love with her, he needed a big, big change in his life and he got it! He came to live in New York, he kind of threw over all his English [pause] contacts and everything. And, you know, can’t blame him! If that’s what he wants to do in his life! So we had to kind of, fade into the background to allow them to have their relationship. What were we gonna do, ringin’ him up? ‘Hey John, you know, hey, come and see me! Leave Yoko!’ No, that obviously never gonna happen. [pause] See, you had to let him do what he wanted, and he- he did you know… And he enjoyed it.
Paul McCartney on John’s early 70′s attacks as a sign of his feelings towards him. Interviewed by Bob Costa, 1991.
“. . . I mean, I think really what it was, really all that happened was that John fell in love. With Yoko. And so, with such a powerful alliance like that, it was difficult for him to still be seeing me. It was as if I was another girlfriend, almost. Our relationship was a strong relationship. And if he was to start a new relationship, he had to put this other one away. And I understood that. I mean, I couldn’t stand in the way of someone who’d fallen in love. You can’t say, “Who’s this?” You can’t really do that. If I was a girl, maybe I could go out and… But you know I mean in this case I just sort of said, right – I mean, I didn’t say anything, but I could see that was the way it was going to go, and that Yoko would be very sort of powerful for him. So um, we all had to get out the way.”
Paul McCartney, interview with German tv program Exclusiv, April 1985.
PAUL: ‘Cause she’s very much to do with it from John’s angle, that’s the thing, you know. And I – the thing is that I – there’s— Again, like, there’s always only two answers. One is to fight it, and fight her, and try and get The Beatles back to four people without Yoko, and sort of ask her to sit down at the board meetings. Or else, the other thing is to just realize that she’s there, you know. And he’s not gonna sort of – split with her, just for our sakes.
Twickenham, January 13th, 1969
PAUL: Yeah, see, that’s the thing. The only one time we’ve actually done it, she’s agreed. She really is alright. It’s like, it’s the thought of her being there when some of— [faltering] And then you don’t talk to John, so then he doesn’t talk to you, you know. And it’s like, you can screw it up just as much because she’s there, as – as John’s relying on her because she’s there. So that’s the thing. You know, but I mean, like, you’ll notice, if John – if you’re onto a beam with John about something, then he really isn’t, you know, he really won’t let Yoko talk about it. Because he knows when you’re on a beam, and he knows about it, and you’ll – you can talk straighter to him.
Twickenham, January 13th, 1969
‘All new wives don’t like their husband’s old friends or cronies,’ he replies. ‘I don’t think [Yoko] liked Paul. I think Paul was ready to like Yoko. Maybe she saw Paul as a threat. It was a partnership. The partnership should have been John and Yoko, not John and Paul. I am not saying it was a deliberate process, but it was a natural process. John had a new partner: she. Yoko Ono. It was going to be John and Yoko’s songs and not Paul and John’s songs.’
Don Short (newsman), c/o Sandra Shevey, The Other Side of Lennon.(1990)
As the meeting was drawing to a weary close, John, not this day with Yoko, who hadn’t seemed particularly connected with what was going on, said he wanted to play us a tape he and Yoko had made. He got up and put the cassette into the tape machine and stood beside it as we listened. The soft murmuring voices did not at first signal their purpose. It was a man and a woman but hard to hear, the microphone having been at a distance. I wondered if the lack of clarity was the point. Were we even meant to understand what was going on, was it a kind of artwork where we would not be able to put the voices into a context, and was context important? I felt perhaps this was something John and Yoko were examining. But then, after a few minutes, it became clear. John and Yoko were making love, with endearments, giggles, heavy breathing, both real and satirical, and the occasional more direct sounds of pleasure reaching for climax, all recorded by the faraway microphone. But there was something innocent about it too, as though they were engaged in a sweet serious game. John clicked the off button and turned again to look toward the table, his eyebrows quizzical above his round glasses, seemingly genuinely curious about what reaction his little tape would elicit. However often they’d shared small rooms in Hamburg, whatever they knew of each other’s love and sex lives, this tape seemed to have stopped the other three cold. Perhaps it touched a reserve of residual Northern reticence. After a palpable silence, Paul said, “Well, that’s an interesting one.” The others muttered something and the meeting was over. It occured to me as I was walking down the stairs that what we’d heard could have been an expression of 1960s freedom and openness but was it more likely that it was as if a gauntlet had been thrown down? “You need to understand that this is where she and I are now. I don’t want to hold your hand anymore.”
Michael Lindsay-Hogg (filmmaker), Luck and Circumstance: A Coming of Age in Hollywood, New York, and Points Beyond. (2011)
“Paul, in his usual way, tried to be the nice guy and was open-minded about John’s weird choice,” says Brown. “He invited them to stay at [his house in] Cavendish Avenue for a while.” The day after Cynthia’s return, they moved into the second-floor guest bedroom and made themselves at home. “But the problem was that Yoko wasn’t a very warm person—not even able to say thank you in response to anything Paul did for them. And he went miles out of his way to make them feel welcome, being a nice guy. So that didn’t last very long.”
The Beatles – Bob Spitz
PMcC: I always had the impression that Klein had got them to go with him because he was the only one who was ever sympathetic to Yoko. Klein saw the Yoko connection and told Yoko that he would do a lot for her. Give Yoko a lot. And that was basically what John and Yoko wanted, recognition for Yoko. We found her sitting on our amps, and like a football team, an all-male thing, you really don’t like to see a chick in the middle of the team. It’s a disturbing thing, they think it throws them off the game or whatever it was, and these were the reasons that I thought, Well, this is crazy, we’re gonna have Yoko in the group next.
SG: She was giving you advice in the studio?
PMcC: Well, she was definitely turning up. Looking at it now, I feel a bit sorry for her because, if only I had been able to understand what the situation was and think, wait a minute, here’s a girl who’s not had enough attention. I can now not make this into a major crisis and just sort of say, “Sure, what harm is she doing on the amps?” I know they would have really loved me. You know, we didn’t like Yoko at first, and people did call her ugly and stuff, and that must be hard for someone who loves someone and is so passionately in love with them, but I still can’t—I’m still trying to see his point of view. What was the point of all that?
All You Need is Love: The Beatles in Their Own Words by Peter Brown and Steven Gaines (thank you @tavolgisvist!)
Examples of failure to be chill:
PAUL: But it’s just funny to sort of realise that after this is all over, you’ll be off in a black bag somewhere – on the Albert Hall, you know. JOHN: Yes. PAUL: And sort of doing shows and stuff, and you know, digging— JOHN: Yeah, but I— PAUL: —digging that thing of it.
January 25th, 1969 (Apple Studios, London)
Yoko had evidently approached Paul McCartney about appearing in the film, as the Beatles' road manager Mal Evans penned in his diary: "PAUL HAS APPOINTMENT WITH JAPANESE LADY WHO WANTS TO PHOTOGRAPH HIS BOTTOM." Presumably Paul declined, and one must wonder if the same invitation might have been extended to John.
Chip Madinger, Lennonology Volume 1: Strange Days Indeed. (2015) (note: unforgivable rudeness on Paul's part to both Yoko and all of us who would have benefited from him featuring in "Bottoms")
“I was in India meditating about the album, when it suddenly hit me. I wrote Yoko telling her that I planned to have her in the nude on the cover. She was quite surprised, but nowhere near as much as George and Paul. “Paul gave me long lectures about it, and said ‘Is there really any need for this? ‘It took me five months to persuade them.
NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS, JUNE 7, 1969
He wasn’t happy. But the big things that were driving him mad were beyond me. He kept on working and writing, but when John came over, all he could talk about was how much he loved Yoko. That disturbed Paul. In spite of John’s obvious happiness, Paul stifled his jealousy with not-very-cute bursts of racist crap.
Francie Schwartz - Body Count
John & Yoko's perspective:
It’s the same. You can quote Paul, it’s probably in the papers, he said it many times at first he hated Yoko and then he got to like her. But, it’s too late for me. I’m for Yoko. Why should she take that kind of shit from those people? They were writing about her looking miserable in the Let It Be film, but you sit through 60 sessions with the most bigheaded, up-tight people on earth and see what its fuckin’ like and be insulted — just because you love someone — and George, shit, insulted her right to her face in the Apple office at the beginning, just being ‘straight-forward,’ you know that game of ‘I’m going to be up front,’ because this is what we’ve heard and Dylan and a few people said she’d got a lousy name in New York, and you give off bad vibes. That’s what George said to her! And we both sat through it. I didn’t hit him, I don’t know why.
I was always hoping that they would come around. I couldn’t believe it, and they all sat there with their wives, like a fucking jury and judged us and the only thing I did was write that piece (Rolling Stone, April 16th, 1970) about “some of our beast friends” in my usual way — because I was never honest enough, I always had to write in that gobbly-gook — and that’s what they did to us.
Ringo was all right, so was Maureen, but the other two really gave it to us. I’ll never forgive them, I don’t care what fuckin’ shit about Hare Krishna and God and Paul with his “Well, I’ve changed me mind.” I can’t forgive ’em for that, really. Although I can’t help still loving them either.
John Lennon: The Rolling Stone Interview, Part One
JOHN: But I understand how they felt, because if it had been Paul or George and Ringo that had fallen in love with somebody and gotten totally involved, suddenly… It wasn’t like, you know, somebody – George coming in and saying, “I’m going to work with Eric Clapton in a band now, and screw you.” It wasn’t that kind of thing at all. It was just suddenly this involvement.
December 6th, 1980: Andy Peebles talks to John and Yoko
“Lennon stated that “there’s some underlying thing about Yoko in [Get Back]”, saying that McCartney looked at Yoko Ono in the studio every time he sang “Get back to where you once belonged””
David Sheff, All We are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono
TRYNKA: ‘The Ballad of John And Yoko’, with Paul playing drums and bass, seemed like Paul’s tribute to you. Was that the case? YOKO: Yeah. I thought that was beautiful. Paul was trying to be diplomatic about the situation, try to make it well... He meant well. There were other instances where he’d do things that were meant well.
Yoko Ono, interview w/ Paul Trynka for MOJO. (May, 2003)
YOKO: Even now, I just read that Paul said, “I understand that he wants to be with her, but why does he have to be with her all the time?” JOHN: Yoko, do you still have to carry that cross? That was years ago. YOKO: No, no, no. He said it recently. I mean, what happened with John is that I sort of went to bed with this guy that I liked and suddenly the next morning I see these three guys standing there with resentful eyes. SHEFF: Do you think that kind of attitude from people was also jealousy? JOHN: It’s a kind of jealousy. People can’t stand people being in love. They absolutely can’t stand it. They want to pull you down in the hole they’re in.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono, interview w/ David Sheff for Playboy. (September, 1980)
‘He wanted me to be part of the group,’ Yoko says. ‘He created the group, so he thought the others should accept that. I didn’t particularly want to be part of them… I couldn’t see how I would fit in, but John was certain I would. He kept saying, ‘They’re very sensitive … Paul is into Stockhausen… They can do your thing…’ He thought the other Beatles would go for it; he was trying to persuade me.’”
Philip Norman’s 2008 biography Lennon
After the initial embarrassment, that how Paul is being very nice to me, he’s nice and a very, str- on the level, straight, sense, like wherever there’s something like happening at the Apple, he explains to me, as if I should know. And also whenever there’s something like they need a light man, or something like that he asks me if I know of anybody, things like that. And like I can see that he’s just now suddenly changing his attitude, like his being, he’s treating me with respect, not because it’s me, but because I belong to John. I hope that’s what it is because that would be nice. And I feel like he’s my younger brother or something like that. I’m sure that if he had been a woman or something, he would have been a great threat, because there’s something definitely very strong with me, John, and Paul.
Revolution Chaos Tape – Yoko Ono, June 4, 1968
"The line [the walrus was Paul] was put in partly because I was feeling guilty because I was with Yoko and I was leaving Paul. It's a very perverse way of saying to Paul: 'here, have this crumb, this illusion, this stroke - because I'm leaving.'" -John
Playboy, 1980
JOHN: And throwing in the line “the Walrus was Paul” just to confuse everybody a bit more. And because I felt slightly guilty because I’d got Yoko, and he’d got nothing, and I was gonna quit. [laughs; bleak] And so I thought ‘Walrus’ has now become [in] meaning, “I am the one.” It didn’t mean that in the song, originally. It just meant I’m the – it could have been I’m the – “I’m The Fox Terrier,” you know. I mean, it’s just a bit of poetry.
August, 1980: John talks to Playboy writer David Sheff about ‘Glass Onion’.
“Still, the real reason that people disliked Yoko was because she ordered them about and sent them on errands in a particularly rude way; she was brought up with servants, and that’s how she treated the staff of Apple. George found it particularly galling that she never gave the Beatles their definite article. He told me, ‘She would say, “Beatles do this” and “Beatles do that”, and we would say, “Uh, it’s the Beatles actually, love.” She’d look at you and say, “Beatles do this.”’ And he laughed and shrugged his shoulders. Whether Yoko was ever aware of the disruption her presence caused to the Beatles’ working practices I don’t know. Some people thought she was so involved in her own work and self-interest that she didn’t notice; others thought that it was a deliberate ploy to separate John off from the others.”

Before you let your finger tap that follow button, linger a moment, there's a small whisper of a note meant just for you.
Greetings to you, my little dove. If you're not sure how to address me, you can call me by my name, either Nala or Audine would be great, feel free to call me with whatever you please. I'm legally adult, somewhere above 23, whether you see me as younger or older, I'll leave that to you. I go with any masculine pronouns. My big 3 are Taurus sun, Leo moon, Cancer rising. My MBTI changes occasionally but it is currently INFP. I do not label this account in particular.
short of brief...
This is my little corner of peace where I share all the things that have recently caught my eye. You'll often find me posting mini reviews of whatever I've just watched, or casually dropping whatever song I've got on repeat.
I yap a lot, usually in the most absurd way possible, you might catch me having a full-on conversation with myself. And yes, I constantly cringe at my own chaotic tweets and end up deleting them.
I also rant. Frequently. I love shit talking about how badly my days going, how messed up my government, anything. I complain too much. I know.
things I fancy...
Anime, Movies, TV Series: Attack On Titan, Hunter x Hunter, Haikyuu, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Studio Ghibli, Monster, The Devil Judge, Law School, Mouse, Move to Heaven, Hospital Playlist, well, I have many favorites, it's hard to mention them all.
Music: ZEROBASEONE, RIIZE, Blackpink, Aespa, Hearts2Hearts, Soojin, Billie Eilish, Sufjan Stevens, Chase Atlantic, Rex Orange County, I listen to Indonesian musicians as well like Sheila On7, Hindia, .Feast, Lomba Sihir, Perunggu, Efek Rumah Kaca, and many more.
Others: I love cats even though I'm allergic to them, I'm also quite vocal when it comes to talking about political issues. I'm a freak when it comes to games, I play Mobile Legends and Plato, I also enjoy watching MPL, and I love talking about my favorite e-sports team.
Forewarnings...
I am quite selective in choosing those I will follow, with no hard feelings.
I consider my account as one that is not safe for minors, as I might be subconsciously let out profanities and/or any topic that are not at all appropriate to be encountered by minors. Therefore, please take a wise consideration before following my account.
I strictly do not tolerate those who tend to bring indirect satires towards others out on timeline, I prevent problematical behavior to be around my abode.
Homophobes, racists, disrespectful people are the last and the most unwanted things I expect to encounter.
If you find me annoying or my words went too far, don’t hesitate to tell me through DM. Feel free to break the ties at any time. Make yourself comfortable.

Emphasize the Everyday
Special events are single-use
I like people and I often get complimented on remembering people, their names, preferences, and what they’ve been up to. My desire to make lasting connections comes naturally and is something that was a huge help while I was in fundraising, an f-word to some for sure. Why? Because many people think asking others for their time or money doesn’t have tangible benefit if it doesn’t have a material good associated with it. The funny thing is that people like to be asked to be included in things because they feel valued.
It has never been a problem for me to ask someone to invest in a resource or social issue that aids our common welfare, and there are basically two ways to go about this: 1) one-time, give now because something is urgent or in short supply; 2) become a regular or sustaining patron, showing up many times so that something can become a reliable resource for you and your community.
In my opinion, the latter should be the default relationship and the former should be “in addition to.” It is more efficient and earnest to ask people to support everyday services, businesses, and organizations because “one hit wonders” cost extra time, planning, money, and material goods. While I have been invigorated by the special events I have produced and was proud of their unique appeal and accessibility, I also came to know how much easier and rewarding relations are through consistent interaction vs. inviting people to come out for one big wow. This was an evolution of my experience and thinking.
Also, events do not form good habits in the way that doing something every day can teach us to be part of an economy and community and not just be a blip on some chart. We need to be guided by everyday principles and partake in activities that make our village whole, for this is how people, neighborhoods, and businesses survive – by consistent, positive, participation not just on special occasions.
A troubling marketplace trend I have noticed is the ritual of shopping nearby for the things we need is being turned on end by flash sales, pop-ups, and glitzy, event-type hype. These one day only affairs are happening all the time and all over the place, so much so that it seems impossible to do anything more than jump from one to the other, making little remaining time to be part of things in our immediate, walkable vicinity.
Recently, I came across the aftermath of Open Streets on Lyndale and it was yucky. The values of Open Streets (using alternative transportation and getting to know local businesses and neighbors*) was overtaken by what people drinking and out for a disposable good time left in the wake of themselves – litter all over empty streets and low-volume patronage of businesses the next day.

Categorically, special events are wasteful and single-use. Maybe you have guessed that what I’m getting at is that we can all do better by going local on an everyday basis. We do not need flash, scarcity, or price reduction to get us to prioritize knowing our shopkeepers, neighborhood businesses, and activist organizations and who they employ and have as volunteers.
They are the fabric of our local network and economy and they count on us to keep coming back and investing in the village.
We may need help refocusing toward this standard. Stay tuned for more about a “go local” program that is in the works and is designed to incentivize purchasing from local growers, makers, and small businesses along one of north Minneapolis’ business districts.
Thanks for reading and take good care,
Kelley
*As a positive aside, Folwell Neighborhood Association calls Folwell Park its headquarters for committee meetings, Board activities, neighborhood night and other fun, togetherness activities. At their recent resource fair and ice cream social, the organizers should be commended for attention to waste reduction, waste management, and utilizing public space to for regular, recurring neighborhood interaction and togetherness.

Dans ma peau
Making this a bullet fic because it's been in The List for centuries but I don't have the crayons to write anything atm
Inspired by the song "Que des coeurs" by MPL.
Geralt is a tattoo artist.
A young man comes in one day without appointment, asking for a simple heart with a name tattooed on his ribs
Geralt wouldn't usually accept this kind of stuff, it's stupid and boring, but he hasn't had a lot of clients lately. Yennefer says it's because he unsettles them, not talking at all when he's stabbing them with a needle
So he nods, and steers the young man towards the chair. The tattoo only takes half an hour. The man speaks the whole time.
He's back six months later. Geralt isn't surprised; that's what usually happens with these kinds of tattoos. What surprises him is that Jaskier (that's the name he put on the waiver) asks for another tattoo, with another name, instead of a removal, a cover, or a refund, like Geralt expected.
He doesn't need to say yes, really, business has been good the last few months, but something compels him to anyway.
Again, Jaskier talks the whole time. Geralt learns that he is a musician and a literature teacher, though he struggles to imagine the colourful, extravagant man teaching anything to kids.
It becomes a sort of routine. Once or twice a year, sometimes more, Jaskier comes back, and asks for another heart, another name. His body slowly becomes a canvas of his heartbreak.
Geralt can't help wondering why the man doesn't learn; few people make the same mistake twice, let alone a dozen times. His first guess is that the musician is just stupid, but with time, he learns that isn't true. Jaskier is brilliant, under all the peacocking and silliness.
One day, as he is placing the stencil on the thin skin of Jaskier's collarbone, he can't keep the question for himself anymore.
"You know you could have the old ones removed, right? Or I could try covering them, if you want."
"I know. I like having them with me, though. Our story together might have ended," he says, tracing his fingers along the name of one of his latest exes, "but I still loved them, at one point in my life. I don't want to forget that."
Geralt hums, not knowing what to say to that. His throat is tight.
"Well, you won't have any space left soon," he jokes lamely. A strange sadness fills Jaskier's eyes as he smiles at him, and they end the session in silence.
The ritual keeps happening, and Geralt starts speaking a little more when they see each other. Jaskier knows how to goad him into conversations. Yennefer looks at him weirdly.
Once, Jaskier doesn't come for a couple of years. It doesn't sit right with Geralt, for some reason. He tries not to think about it.
He also tries not to think about how relieved he feels when Jaskier walks back into the shop one day like he'd never disappeared, and asks for another tattoo. Says the last one proposed to him at a Five Guys
"A Five Guys, Geralt, can you imagine? I mean, it is my favourite place to eat, but I don't want my proposal memories to be filled with the smell of bacon grease!"
Geralt snorts and shakes his head, tapping Jaskier's thigh for him to stop moving as he starts on the heart.
When it's done, he pushes his chair back to give it a better look. That's when he realizes.
Jaskier is covered almost from head to toe in hearts. Of all shapes and sizes and styles - he told Geralt after the first few times that he could let his "artist's mind" speak and they've had fun finding original ways to draw hearts. There's only one spot left, Geralt knows, even though he can't see it: he knows Jaskier's body better than his own by now. It's on his right side, underneath his pec, where he's ticklish and sensitive.
"This one better be the one then, right?" Jaskier laughs when Geralt points it out.
Jaskier pays and leaves with a wave and a smile, but Geralt's world is all wrong suddenly.
Over the next few months, there are two parts of him warring inside, keeping him awake at night, his brain empty of all inspiration and motivation for his work. He wants Jaskier to come back, he's not fooling himself anymore about how much he likes the man. But if he comes back, it means he still hasn't found the one, like he's been prattling about since the first time. If he comes back, it'll be the last time. Maybe not the last time Jaskier gets his heart broken, but he'll have to find another way to commit it to memory, because his skin is already covered in ink. He won't need Geralt anymore.
Jaskier is back sooner than he's ever been. He usually calls beforehand now, since Geralt told him it'd be better if he had an appointment the first time. He hasn't called this time.
He comes just half an hour before Geralt closes the shop. Yennefer left early because it's hers and Triss' anniversary.
They sketch the heart in silence, Geralt feeling like his own is going to break to pieces at the smallest sound. Jaskier has a nervous energy about him, but he's strangely quiet as he takes off his shirt and lies down.
Geralt executes every step on auto pilot, jaw clenched. When his hands come to rest on Jaskier's ribs, he thinks he can feel his heart fluttering. He imagines he's stabbing it with his needle, pinning it in place for him to keep.
The heart is finished, and Geralt has to muster all his will to open his mouth and speak with a rough voice.
"Which name, this time?"
He doesn't want to look at Jaskier, because he's a coward. He'd rather die than watch the sparkle in his eyes as he says the name of his latest lover, the one he probably hopes is the one. Geralt's not sure his own heart would survive it.
But the silence stretches for too long, and he can't fuss with the machine and the inks and the needles forever, so finally he turns, meeting Jaskier's gaze with dread, and all he finds there is pure, unbridled hope.
"Yours?"

'Nosferatu' Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror Released in 1922, Nosferatu is just a few years shy of its 100th anniversary, and somehow still manages to be creepy. Part of that effect may come from its on-location sets and beautifully framed shots, and Max Schreck’s performance as the titular monster certainly factors into its legacy. Yet another spooky aspect is the film’s soundtrack, which has been adapted and reimagined over the years. This Halloween, guests can head to the Music Box Theatre for a screening set to a live soundtrack from the Curse of the Vampire Orchestra, by Minneapolis composer Philip Shorey. The score features a local symphony and choral musicians mixed with modern electronica and industrial percussion. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18-19; 3:30 p.m. Oct. 19. Free; RSVP required. MN Toy Posse Image courtesy event organizers MN Toy Posse Halloween Bash 3 What happens when you combine 70 toy sellers from all over the Midwest, hundreds of toy fans of all ages, and thousands of rare and unique toys and collectables? You get one giant posse. This weekend, the Minnesota Toy Posse will host its third-annual Halloween Bash toy swap. Posse founder Mark Seekamp started the group a little over three years ago on Facebook as a way to help connect people looking to buy, sell, or trade their favorite toys. He hadn’t planned on just how many people would want to join his gang. “We have more than 2,200 members, and it’s a really active group,” he says. And it’s not just about toys, either. “We’ve become friends and talk about our lives. People will post pictures when they have a baby, or we’ll just use it to meet up and go see a movie. It’s about creating relationships beyond just looking for toys.” For Seekamp, the best part of the day is how toys can bring people together. “The coolest part is being able to see someone who is going to be really excited about a toy that you have that you’re ready to part with.” 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 20. Interview with Annie Saunders by Steve Marsh
In 1960, on the CBS game show I’ve Got a Secret, audience members laughed nervously as John Cage performed “Water Walk,” a three-minute composition where Cage makes music with a water pitcher, an electric mixer, ice cubes, a rubber ducky, and a tape recorder, among other common household items. Fluxus Festival curator Christopher Rountree tapped Annie Saunders to help him adapt Cage’s performance for the final night of the festival. Saunders’ theater company, Wilderness, concentrates on site-based experiential theater, largely set in disused, urban spaces marked for demolition. We caught up with Saunders via FaceTime on a spring visit to her parents home in the Bay Area and discussed the deep social need for hanging out in immersive, open-ended environments where the artists in charge are not telling us that everything is going to be okay.
SM: How long have you had to get this piece ready?
AS: Chris approached me about it at Christmas time. I met him a year ago, when Chris was conducting another show in an opera festival in Omaha, Nebraska and he saw The Wreck [Saunders’ experimental opera]. He and I talked a little bit after we were in Omaha about possibilities for collaboration. That was kind of just a preliminary conversation, and then in December he called me up for this.
SM: John Cage didn't accept that music was an idea for a communication—when he conscientiously wrote something sad he was frustrated that the audience and critics were often apt to laugh. He quit making music until he read the writings of Ananda Coomaraswamy positing that, “the responsibility of artists is to imitate nature in her manner of aspiration.” So Water Walk isn’t a piece of music interpreting water, it’s actually meant to mimic the sound of water.
AS: I think the domestication of water as well. It's like bottle of soda, blender, steam cooker, bathtub. It's all the ways that we’ve tried to contain those natural resources.
SM: Cage may have invented “The Happening” before Allan Kaprow—Kaprow attended Cage’s composition class at the New School. Cage thought theatrically, in any case. So does his score for this piece read like a script?
AS: Yeah. Absolutely.
SM: How familiar were you with his work before taking this on?
AS: I was familiar with him only through the dance world, so only really because of Merce [Cunningham] and also because of Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, who uses some Cage and also Steve Reich. My master's degree was in modernism and philosophy, but I wrote a lot about visual arts. I wrote my master's thesis about minimalism. It relates to masculinity, and it was mainly about visual art and literature, but there was some music stuff in there. Really just in the past year I've been really working robustly with music people. All my theater work has sound design but I rarely work with live musicians. So when I first read Water Walk, I knew I wanted to make it longer, to not just do it for three minutes. As soon as I watched the video, I wanted to see what happens to the performer in doing this over and over again. And I also was very drawn to everything that happens on the tape, like the whole situation of the live to tape the TV thing. I knew I wanted to include that and I knew I wanted to loop it.
SM: Oh wow.
AS: I love watching that thing. I just feel like there's so much and I'm really excited that we get to use it so many times, because I feel like the mission of it starts to become this other thing. On that tape, Cage is this kind of blissed out guru, sort of oblivious to the audience and the presenter and the whole situation. Also, I think, really into the idea of the live to tape audience, who are so unlike the experimental music audience.
SM: Yes, music critics of the time were very skeptical of Cage, and classical or even “experimental” music audiences aren’t always the most progressive.
AS: I relate to that very profoundly. When I make stuff, the thing that gets me so excited is when people are like, “I've never been to the theater before—I heard you had a great bar at this place.” When we take over a warehouse and we do a show, I'm interested in people who are like, “I've walked by this building and there's never anything here and now there's something here, so I came.” That's why I love making work in LA, because there's this kind of event-based audience that aren't a theater or music crowd. They're just people who want to do cool shit and they don't care.
SM: When you go to the Tonight Show or Kimmel or something, they give you candy to rev you up, and you’re told when to clap and when to laugh. The whole thing is artificial, but it's meant to be a simulacrum of something real.
AS: You're watching a performance of sorts, but you're also a performer in the performance and you're also sort of a volunteer. Especially back in the day, when I've Got a Secret was on, they would go get those people from the mall. People would be out for the day, housewives and shit, and they would be like, “We’ll give you a prize.” So in our piece, we're doing this thing where we're actually going to show you how repetitious and boring live performance actually is. We're not going to have a comedian, or a hype man, or a raffle guy. We’re just going to show you the resets and every reset will be real, for 45 minutes.
SM: Cage has that famous quote: “If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all.”
AS: Totally. My suspicion is that we probably won't quite get there.
SM: How will your staging be different than Cage’s was in 1960?
AS: It will be the last piece of the Fluxus festival, in BP Hall. So when the 8pm show in the main hall gets out, they’ll walk into our set. The set with the tables and the bathtub and the piano and everything is in the center of the space and it’s lit like a TV set but it’s oriented in the round. When Cage performed live on I’ve Got a Secret, it would have been boomed and that's how we're going to do the amplification for ours as well. When Chris starts playing the composition Water Walk, he will be followed by a boom operator. He'll play the composition seven times and he's going to try and do it exactly the same every time and he'll fail—he'll become agitated and tired and wet.
SM: Things will be getting fucked up, the radios will break…
AS: And so during the resets, the stage hands will come out, they'll mop and they'll put new water in the bathtub and they'll put new ice cubes out. And the set will become a pile of shit. And that's also a lot to do with Fluxus. Actually I was reading La Monte Young, and he has this quote: “Fluxus is the state of things.” That's the actual life—the impossible thing is stasis. The thing to do as a radical Fluxus artist is actually to try to do things the same and fail and let the audience witness. Basically, it goes from being a recreation of a previous thing that happened on TV to being just what's happening in the room.
SM: Wow.
AS: I am interested in duration and boredom and I'm interested in what happens in between. You have an expectation of the artist: that they're going to resolve your feelings for you. We have this expectation of tension, build up and then release. This playwright or this composer is going to take care of me in this way. They’re going to help me with my need for things to resolve. And I think Cage was dealing with this idea that maybe I’m not going to do that.
SM: We think of John Cage as being kind of this avant-garde composer who didn't care about what was going on politically, but instead he saw his music as a critique of what was going on in the world, whether in Vietnam or with the Civil Rights movement. Why is this piece interesting to you in 2019?
AS: That's a great question and a big question. Something I think about a lot is an audience that wants total agency over how they consume stories. I think a lot about the audience that wants to download a TV show and watch it on their own time. Those same people want to be given access to temporal human interactive events that will not happen again.
SM: Yes. We crave those kinds of events. Why?
AS: I think, in our increasingly digitally mediated culture, magically disruptive, spontaneously intimate, interactive, real time happenings of togetherness are really needed for humanity and really desired. Fluxus as a whole, and the whole idea of happenings—the democracy of that, and the spontaneity of that, and the humanity and the possibility for fuck ups, is really important to me.
This interview has been condensed and edited by Steve Marsh, a writer interested in culture, extreme experience, and performance. He’s profiled athletes, artists, and leaders in thought and business for Mpls. St.Paul Magazine, New York Magazine, GQ, Pitchfork and the Wall Street Journal.

Ethernet Over Fiber Compared To Copper Cables
Communication, Business, Electronics Although Ethernet innovations have been utilized since the 1970s inside LANs, it as of late has been around us like a wide region network transmission medium because of the improvement of fiber optic innovation. With correspondence innovation creeping its direction forward, fiber optic link is gradually assuming control over the link innovation by supplanting copper link as a method of correspondence signal transmission. There are many advantages of changing over completely to Ethernet over fiber when contrasted with customary copper wires or links. The primary benefit is the way that when contrasted and copper links, Ethernet over fiber can give multiple times more data transmission covering a distance which is multiple times farther, which is a significant step in the right direction when contrasted and customary types of getting to transfer speed. With fiber optic's limitless transfer speed, it might impart data more dedicatedly. Subsequently, you can envision the rate from the association which goes around and around the transfer speed doled out. Ethernet for broadband can be conveyed over fiber optic links introduced all through a whole structure which could significantly decrease typical provisioning time for clients dwelling there.
Fiber optic link additionally gives you the amazing chance to grow your transmission capacity and have new advancements like MPLS, DWDM, and so on. Since fiber optic link depends on glass, it doesn't direct electrical flow. Thus, that you can get rid of establishing. It's additionally safeguarded against electromagnetic interference like lightning. Fiber optic link utilizes light heartbeats which make it advantageous to utilize outside and near electrical links. It isn't inclined to water and synthetics as it is made of glass. In this way, it can't be harmed by rough components. Accordingly reduces down on the expense of support of Ethernet. The best innovation used in fiber optic links is more grounded in correlation with copper links. This produces top quality picture quality and is absent any and all any external impacts. In the event of breakage of fiber optic links, there is no possibility of actual wounds. Rather than passing data on through power, fiber-optics does it through light. There is additionally no gamble of mischief in light of fire or electric shock. Suppliers scarcely have worries about equipment disappointment when they use fiber optics.
Optical fiber can't be tapped effectively as well as though it's, no light will be communicated. Subsequently, it is safer than copper wires. Despite the fact that, Ethernet isn't accessible all over, it is as yet a practical choice where it is possible. Whether for a little office or a huge arrangement, it is an efficient and reasonable arrangement. With respect to speed, fiber optic links can communicate great signs over 10GB each second. Definitely, the upsides of switching over completely to Ethernet fiber optic links are tremendous. With state of the art innovation in your grasp, information correspondence isn't confined by distance and you might have the best quality transmission for the telephones, Internet and TV. Ethernet fiber optic link has been an extraordinary improvement in media communications. It has a ton of positive elements. Telecom organizations don't have to upset or redirect your telephone, Internet or TV administrations when they redesign their transfers or to make fixes. You get relentless, quick and clear signals. As Ethernet over fiber turned into the most regularly utilized innovation, an Ethernet fix link is required with the end goal of interoperability between a few hardware. Ethernet fix link is practically very much like an optical or electrical link that is required while interfacing one optical or electrical gadget to one more concerning directing signs. When the two gadgets that ought to be associated and thusly are disparate you might require a fix link. Ethernet fix links can be parted into fiber optics fix ropes with fiber connectors (LC fix link, SC fix line, ST connectors fiber, and so on) and copper fix links with RJ45 connectors (CAT5e fix link, CAT6 fix link, and so on).
