Adorned to the hunting armor as a necklace were the teeth, claws, talons, fangs, tusks, horns, & saber teeth of the humanoids, animals, creatures, & beasts they killed as proof of their hunting prowess. The armor was also decorated with the mammalian fur, reptilian scales, & avian feathers of the game they found while hunting.
Ivory and scarlet combat armor
Charcoal and cherry power armor. The Mark 10 Mars/Ares Combat Armor is a technologically advanced combat exoskeleton system designed to vastly improve the strength, perception, endurance, intelligence, agility, reflexes, speed, & durability of a metahuman or superhuman super soldier in the field of combat. The armor is streamlined than its bulkier and heavier predecessors. The power armor is the most advanced piece of tactical military hardware in alien or human hands. The powered armor is commonly personalized by suit art on the power armor and visor art on the power armor helmet. It is an attempt to create a powered exoskeleton capable of taking full advantage of the physical, mental, & emotional capabilities of a demigod or alien hybrid. The armor requires training to enter, use, & take off. Spanning over centuries of development it encompassed more than just a powered suit of armor. It is a pioneering effort intended to shatter current technological barriers. With constant drills metahuman and superhuman super soldiers can enter and exit the armor in minutes. The powered armor is a highly advanced suit capable of further enhancing the metahuman’s or superhumans' physical, mental, & emotional performance while also doubling as a platform capable of handling an advanced human or alien artificial intelligence network. Some suits allowed the helmet and surrounding segments to be removed and replaced allowing a user to simply climb in through the opening in the chest or back cavity. A more involved method consisted of the suit being constructed from prefabricated parts around the user, seemingly sealing the user inside. Unlike the powered exoskeletons that preceded it, the power armor was designed from the ground up as a suit of armor. It requires a team of trained engineers, inventors, & technicians to fully take off the suit of power armor from power armor. Its design philosophy would serve as a basis for all future powered armor system designs. However you can remove parts of the armor in emergencies to repair the armor or to customize or upgrade the power armor. Each generation of the power armor is composed of major fundamental components. The power armor has built in 7. 76 mm ballistic, plasma, & energy machine guns and 40 mm grenade launchers in the shoulder of the power armor. The construction of the suit is done in overlapping layers. An interactive holographic computer has also been integrated into the helmet with an intuitive HUD. The armor's shell is composed of a multilayer alloy of remarkable strength and has been augmented with a refractive and absorbing coating capable of dispersing and absorbing a near unlimited amount of ballistic, laser, energy, plasma, & magical weapon strikes. The power armor absorbs and reflects the kinetic energy of incoming ballistic, energy, laser, & plasma projectiles. It can also absorb other damaging forces such as hazardous levels of heat, radiation and microwaves. Effectively making the user temporarily invulnerable. The suit contains a gel filled layer underneath a thick black and white armored bodysuit. The gel layer regulates temperature. The inner skinsuit is made of a moisture absorbing synthetic material linked to an environment control computer and the occupant's neural mental and emotional interface. The user is healed by nanites and the power armor is repaired by nanomachines. The battle suit is a sealed system, capable of extra vehicular activity for a near unlimited amount of time or operations in dangerous situations such as underwater, in the vacuum of space, in radioactive areas, in deserts or jungles with extreme heat, or arctic tundra with extreme cold. The suit can reflect or absorb the electromagnetic spectrum including radio waves, gamma waves, & microwaves to make the user invisible for a short time to enemies. It is hardened against EMPs, radiation, & microwaves. It has filters that are completely effective at removing toxins, germs, radiation, bacteria, poison, & viruses. The power armor is a powerful and extremely versatile set of tactical power armor. The visor of the power armor allows the super soldier to sense the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The battle suit's greatest advantage, however, is a super dense optical computer memory. This revolutionary solid-based crystalline layer forms a network within the suit's frame of proper size and capability of housing the types of smart alien and human artificial intelligences. Artificial Intelligence can be delivered to the suit via a data crystal chip storage device no bigger than a smartphone. Reverse engineered from alien and human technology leading to drastically enhanced combat and physical, intellectual, & emotional performance. Allowing the operator to execute superhuman feats. The functionality of the battle armor system is unprecedented. The power armor suit suppresses the user’s noise allowing them to sneak past enemies when crouched or crawling. Rather than being a traditional suit of body armor the battle suit works on a biomechanical level. Allowing for direct user-controlled movement. Each human being has a molecular fiber network called the nervous system within their brain. All alien superhuman and human metahuman super soldiers are given a neural interface. The suit also possesses other features that enhance its wearer's already superhuman or supernatural abilities. It has numerous clips, belts, and holsters for the attachment of additional weapons and ammunition. It has an advanced HUD or heads up display. It has active camouflage. It has plasma shields and energy shields. It allows for customization and upgrading. It lets users connect the power armor with their cyberware implants and bionic enhancements. It has a jetpack on the back of the armor and the armor’s power armor boots for hovering or flight. It has room for storage of extra supplies of food and water. It has an oxygen tank to breathe in space or underwater. It is powered by gas, electricity, steam, or nuclear power. It has a built-in battery that can be recharged. It has plating on the face, neck, chest, back, arms, & legs.
He/she/they wore charcoal and ruby military class heavy assault Iuyamian combat armor and power armor that were both made out of alien metal materials stronger than Wakandan vibranium the metal that made up the suit of the Black Panther (T’challa), adamantium the metal that made the metal claws of Wolverine (James Howlett Logan) and Sabertooth (Victor Creed), & nth metal. The Iuyamian armor tempered with celestial steel and stellar titanium had a gorget (that protects the chest), a bevor (protecting the lower face, neck, chin, & throat) a breastplate or chestplate (that protects the chest), backplate, pauldrons (that protect the shoulders), plackart (that protected the lower half of the torso), cuirass (that protected the front of the torso), culet (that protects the small of back and the buttocks), couters (that protects the elbows), poleyns (that protected the knees), faulds (to protect the waist and hips), gauntlets (that protect the forearms to the hands), gardbraces (to protect the armpits), vambraces (that protect the elbow to the forearm), sabatons (that protect the feet), cuisses (to protect the thighs), tassat (that protect the groin, upper thighs, & pelvis), & greaves (that covered from the shin to the knee). The power armor helmet was designed with a sharper temple, with a metallic shine, a full curved ridge, a definite brow, a prominent muzzle, & a solitary dark cambion glowing visor with two eye holes. The power armor helmet was also designed with a dark umber and dark scarlet color, a faintly more skeletal look, & it had distinct cheeks. The power armor helmet had claw marks going above its left eye to the bottom of its left cheek. The claw marks were from a female were-human who is someone who is powerful as King Shark, Wolverine, Beast, Sabertooth, Juggernaut, Orca, Killer Croc, The Shark, Gorilla Grodd, Copperhead, Monsieur Mallah, Manbat, Bane, & Cheetah combined. This dangerous were-human was armed with gauntlets with serrated diamond tipped metal claws made of a metal stronger than nth metal coated in element x. Cardinal Changeling barely defeated her in their Hybrid/Chimera or Beast/Feral/Primal form. Instead of repairing it, Scarlet Shapeshifer kept the claw marks as proof of their battle out of respect. The power armor helmet was designed with numerous Iuyamian marks on the face, the power armor helmet had lines of Iuyamian characters on both cheeks and temple, the power armor helmet was decorated with countless Iuyamian symbols, the power armor helmet had unique Iuyamian writing on both brows and the muzzle, the power armor helmet had organic cybernetic and natural bionic elements (these organic cybernetic and natural bionic elements were on its temple, on its snout, & and on both cheeks), the power armor helmet had two shining cardinal lines going down the two right and left eye holes of his/her/their dark fire brick glowing visor, & finally the power armor helmet had bizarre sophisticated patterns around the jaw area making it distantly look like a face. All of this gave his/her/their power armor helmet a menacing and remarkable look that motivated allies and petrified enemies. Fastened to the helmet was the skull of a humanoid alien they hunted as hunting captain and clan hunter/huntress of their tribe and clan. After the humanoids, animals, beasts, & creatures were killed they took their corpses. Their bodies were burned leaving only their bones to be gathered to steal their mana or power. Mana is a life force which gives influence, power, and authority. Mana can be gained or lost. It is stored in the bones. After someone’s death, small bones would be turned into jewelry.

[TASK 163: AFRO LATINE]
In celebration of Latine Heritage Month being September 15th-October 15th, here’s a masterlist below compiled of over 250+ Afro Latine faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever faceclaim or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK - examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags.

#OnThisDay July 28th, 1915 the United States invaded and illegally occupied Ayiti (Haiti) 🇭🇹 with the aim to influence the type of politics and economics that would favor US business interests.
The United States ruled as an oppressive military regime led by Marines and the US created Haitian gendarmerie through martial law for 19 years until 1934.
Two major rebellions occurred during this period resulting in several thousand of Haitians being killed and numerous human rights violations – including torture and summary executions – by the United States Marines and the gendarmerie.
“Corvée” (unpaid) labor was utilized for massive infrastructure projects that resulted in hundreds to thousands of deaths. Under the occupation, most Haitians continued to live impoverished while the United States re-established power into the hands of only a select minority of Haitians, the wealthy French-cultured mulatto Haitians.
Background… In the first decades of the 20th century, Haiti experienced great political instability and was heavily in debt to France, Germany and the United States. Much of this instability was caused by foreign interference from American, British, French and German interests. Political tensions were often between two groups; wealthy French-speaking mulatto Haitians who represented the minority of the population and poor Afro-Haitians who spoke the beautiful Haitian Kreyol language. Various revolutionary armies carried out the coups. Each was formed by cacos, peasant militias from the mountains of the north, who stayed along the porous Dominican border and were often funded by foreign governments to stage revolts.
Haiti's imposed debt, which was eighty percent of its annual revenue, was held by three nations; France, followed by Germany, then the United States. However, the United States had become Haiti's largest trade partner at the time, replacing France, with American businesses expanding their presence in Haiti.
In an effort to reduce German influence, the United States Department of State between 1910 and 1911 backed a consortium of American investors, headed by the National City Bank of New York, to acquire investor control of the Banque Nationale de la République d’Haïti (BNRH). This was the country's sole commercial bank and served as the Haitian government's treasury.
In 1914, National City Bank and BNRH began to plan the destabilization of Haiti to pressure the United States to intervene.
Urged by the National City Bank and the BNRH, with the latter of the two already under direction of American business interests, the United States Marines took custody of Haiti's gold reserve of about US$50,000 – about $13 million as of 2020 – on December 17, 1914.
The Marines transported the gold onto the USS Machias and transferred it to the National City Bank's New York City vault on 55 Wall Street. The confiscation of the gold provided the United States with a large amount of control over the Haitian government, though American businesses demanded further intervention.
In February 1915, Vilbrun Guillaume Sam, son of a former Haitian president, took power as President of Haiti. The culmination of his repressive measures came on 27 July 1915, when he ordered the execution of 167 political prisoners, including former president Zamor, who was being held in a Port-au-Prince jail. This infuriated the population, which rose up against Sam's government as soon as news of the executions reached them. The United States regarded the “anti-American” revolt against Sam as a threat to American business interests in the country, especially the Haitian American Sugar Company (HASCO) (American business venture which sought to produce and sell sugar and other goods in Haiti and the United States.)
During the occupation, Haitian presidents were not elected by universal suffrage but rather chosen by the Senate. The American occupying authorities therefore looked to find a presidential candidate ready to cooperate with them. The United States would go on to establish and support wealthy mulatto Haitians into positions of power.
Haiti's economic functions were overseen by the United States Department of State, while the United States Navy was tasked with infrastructure and healthcare works, though the Navy ultimately held more authority. Officials from the United States then wielded veto power over all governmental decisions in Haiti, and Marine Corps commanders served as administrators in the departments. The original treaty was to be in effect for ten years, though an additional agreement in 1917 expanded the United States' power for twenty years. For the next nineteen years, U.S. State Department advisers ruled Haiti, their authority enforced by the United States Marine Corps.
Opposition to the U.S. occupation began immediately after the Marines entered Haiti and installed a president without the consent of Haitians in 1915. The rebels (called "cacos," after a local bird sharing their ambush tactics) strongly resisted American control of Haiti. The U.S. and Haitian governments began a vigorous campaign to destroy the rebel armies.
The U.S. forces the creation of a new Haitian constitution! Edited Shortly after installing Dartiguenave as president of Haiti, US President Wilson pursued the rewriting of the Constitution of Haiti. One of the main concerns for the United States was the ban of white people from owning Haitian land. The great Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines had forbidden land ownership by whites when Haiti became independent to deter foreign influence, and since 1804. Haiti's new constitution was drafted under the supervision of Franklin D. Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
By 1929, Haitians had grown angered with the Borno-Russell government and American occupation, with demands for direct elections increasing. In early December 1929, protests against the American occupation began at the Service Technique de l’Agriculture et de l’Enseignement Professionnel's main school. On 6 December 1929, about 1,500 Haitians peacefully protesting local economic conditions in Les Cayes were fired upon by U.S. Marines, with the massacre resulting in twelve to twenty-two Haitians dead and left fifty-one injured.
During the occupation of Haiti by the United States, human rights abuses were committed against the native Haitian population. Such actions involved the censorship, concentration camps, forced labor, racial segregation, religious persecution of Haitian Vodou practitioners and torture.
Overall, American troops and the Haitian gendarmerie killed several thousands of Haitian civilians during the rebellions between 1915 and 1920, though the exact death toll is unknown. Yet the estimated numbers are over 25,000!!
Franklin D. Roosevelt, who as Assistant Secretary of the Navy said he was responsible for drafting the 1918 constitution, was a proponent of the devious “Good Neighbor policy" for the US role in the Caribbean and Latin America. The United States and Haiti agreed on 7 August 1933 to end the occupation.
Yet the effects of this US 🇺🇸 treacherous political and economic takeover, genocide (25,000 Haitians), thievery ($13 million in gold), and defacement of the constitution is still seen today!
Long live our Ayisyen people! Pouvwa pou Ayiti!
May we learn the lesson of the treachery of the USA, US corporate globalization, racism, and socio-economic oppression!

Nicomedes Santa Cruz was, without a doubt, the most important black intellectual in 20th century Peru, and one of the most important in Latin America.
Yet, his life, work, and legacy remain relatively unknown, except within academic circles and among Afro-Peruvian organizations.
He was a Peruvian singer, songwriter and musicologist. He was primarily a decimista (or decimero), a singer of décimas.
After his schooling, it was decided that he would work as a blacksmith, which he did until 1956 when he left his workshop and traveled throughout Peru and Latin America, composing and reciting his poems.
Porfirio Vasquez came to Lima in 1920 and was an early pioneer of the movement to regain the lost cultural identity of Afro-Peruvians.
Santa Cruz assumed the task of reviving Afro-Peruvian folklore through a theater company he organized with his sister Victoria Santa Cruz (1959–1961), through radio broadcasts, and through his collaborations in the daily newspapers Expreso and El Comercio as well as other publications.
In 1959, with his group Conjunto Cumanana, he recorded the album Kumanana, followed in 1960 by Ingá and Décimas y poemas Afroperuanos.
He made his theater debut in 1957 at the Teatro Municipal de Chile, with the company Pancho Fierro, in a show called “Black Rhythms of Peru.”
During his travels, he continued to participate in events promoting Afro-Peruvian folklore, notably his address at the first Black Arts Festival, held in Cañete, in August 1971.
In 1974 he traveled for the first time to Africa, where in Dakar, Senegal, he participated in the symposium "Négritude et Amérique Latine" with his lecture "Aportes de las civilizaciones africanas al folklore del Peru."
In 1987 he began collaborating in preparing a series of LP record albums called España en su Folklore, a collection of songbooks from Spain and America.
In 1989 he taught a seminar on African culture in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the following year participated in the expedition Adventure 92, touring ports in Mexico and Central America.
He died of lung cancer on February 5, 1992, after surgery at the Clinical Hospital in Madrid, Spain.

Shakira: "Latin Artists Are In A Much More Advantageous Position Now"
Shakira dives into her views of the greater music industry, including stage design and Colombia's pop music evolution, and her much-awaited NFL performance.
In a new interview, the GRAMMY winner talks about how the music industry has changed for Latin artists since her early '00s crossover.
Shakira shook the music and sports world with the announcement in late September that she, along with Jennifer Lopez, will perform at the NFL's Superbowl Halftime show in February 2020. But before we can see the "Clandestino" singer shake her hips to her Afro-Latin pop rhythms onstage, she is gearing up to release her concert documentary Shakira In Concert: El Dorado World Tour, coming to theatres around the world on Nov. 13.
In an interview with Billboard, the GRAMMY winner shared how the music documentary, named after her 2017 album El Dorado, represents a different facet of her life. "It’s the first time I’ve gone on the road as a mom, and even starting this album presented its difficulties," she said.
The performer also reflected on her career growth and her ever-growing fan base, and how she's seeing younger faces now more than ever. "I might not be 23, but it seems like a big portion of my audience is very, very young," she said. "It’s hard to explain, but it seems that there is a really young audience that listens to the music that I put out lately."
The interview also touched on her views of the greater music industry, including stage design and Latin music's latest rise, Colombia's pop music evolution, her much-awaited NFL performance and more.
On Where Latin Artists Stand In The U.S. Music Mainstream Today
The Colombian singer, who was a part of the "Latin Explosion" music scene in the early 2000s, along with Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias, says Latin artists have a greater advantage now. While she began singing in Spanish, Shakira felt it was an organic next step for her to cross over into the U.S. English-language market with her 2001 album Laundry Service, but she still faced challenges that bilingual artists may not face now.
"When I started my career, I had to face so many different challenges that I probably would not have to face today with the way the music industry is shaped now. I started out in Colombia where there was no pop music scene, it was non-existent...This whole new world had opened up to me, and with it came so many great opportunities, but I continued to pursue impossible goals such as making a song like 'Hips Don’t Lie,' for example—that had a Colombian cumbia and a mention of Barranquilla in the middle of it—play on American radio. I remember people from my own record company telling me this is never going to play on American radio,’ and I was so sure that it would. So I had to practically convince the executives in my record company to pick up all the albums I had released and reprint them with 'Hips Don’t Lie' on it. I remember I said to [then Sony Music Chairman] Donny Ienner, ‘You have to trust me on this one. This is going to happen, this song is going to blow up.’ I knew it and it happened, it was a great prophecy ...’’
‘’But you can imagine the challenges I had to face when Spanish music or even Spanish-influenced music wasn’t that cool. Now it’s a different story, Latin artists are in a much more advantageous position now, but back in the day is seemed like the Great Wall of China, crossing over seemed like crossing over the Great Wall. An impossible task."
On Choosing A Simple Stage Setup In A World Full Of Grand Stage Designs
While Travis Scott added a rollercoaster to his stage and J Balvin has incorporated dinosaur visuals, Shakira went for a simple stage design on her El Dorado World Tour, a choice, she said is about her fans.
"I wanted to carry the whole weight of the show on my shoulders, I think it was a challenge artistically. And also to have the margin to improvise, to be able to just go with the flow and use the energy in the room and respond to it, and let the audience control the whole thing and make it be all about them. I was so grateful with my fans and the way they supported me, how they backed me up all this time, I just wanted the show to be about them, about the connection that I have with them, about the gratitude I feel towards them. I felt that if I brought dancers in, the show was going to be so much more rigid and scripted, and I needed to have the liberty to just respond in any way and leave some room for improvisation. I wanted to make it about the music."
On What The Concert Movie Means To Her
Not only was El Dorado the first time she went on tour as a mom, but it was also around the time Shakira recovered from a vocal cord injury, two changes she said gave her a new perspective.
"It just made me see my whole career in a different way, see my fans in a different light, and it made me realize that every night on stage was a gift and was a miracle, and I wanted to share with my fans from all over everything that I went through before they saw the final product: from the experience of going on the road as a mom for the first time, to the suffering that I went through when I lost my voice, the doubts that I felt about singing again, and when I was back how grateful I was to be back, the joy that I felt. To me, it was a very important tour, I think this album and this tour have been two of the things that I’m most proud of in my career, and to be able to share it with people all over the world, people in different countries, who belong to different cultures, speak different languages, and to be able to watch it simultaneously."
On Her Upcoming 2020 Superbowl Performance
The performance will go down on the singer's birthday, and she'll be bringing celebratory vibes with her.
"I’ll be celebrating it with I don’t know how many people watch it, I think it’s some absurd number like 100 million people. So there’s a little bit of pressure of course to do things right. I I’m going to put everything in my power, everything I’m capable of into this task and try to deliver an amazing show like the American audience deserves. I feel that this is a great responsibility too, because I’m representing the Latinos, those who are born in the U.S. and those who have been born abroad. It’s a big day for Latins, because the Super Bowl is such an important stage in the world, and being there with that purpose just makes it all the more exciting and grand. We’re waiting for the producers to give us orders about what we can and cannot do. [Laughs.] But I feel that I’m in great company [with Jennifer Lopez], and I really hope that things work out. We are really going to try and put a killer show together, the best we can."

11 Desirable Facts About Dane Ray
So you want to be a Jamaican musician superstar YES?
Well don't we all. So sign up with the queue.
But there is a method to leap the queue. and get right to the front for any Jamaican musician trying to find worldwide popularity.
HOW?
Promotion and networking my friend.
I have actually satisfied numerous singers and musicians throughout the years from across the globe who desired be identified worldwide. Some had what it took, some didn't. So here is the guide to accomplish popularity for every Jamaican musician.
To start with, you need to have the best noise. Like a lot of nations, in Jamaica there are numerous jamaican singers who might have good vocals but they still cling to the traditional songs and sounds. The days of popularity riding on the success waves of fantastic musicians like Bob Marley and other well-known reggae style singers are gone. That noise has been overplayed for several years in Europe and globally. Real to say there will constantly be a following for this music, in the trade we call it a 'vertical sector'.
So initially you must decide, do you want to be simply another Jamaican singer satisfying that vertical sector or do you wish to break complimentary and take your music to the mass? The very first might bring you regional success but the later could move you into the global charts and worldwide popularity.
The method of choosing is easy. Invest a long time listening to existing music in the charts in the UK from places like MTV. Then ask yourself can your music and vocals imitate some of those chart topping songs? If it can, you are half way to ending up being a super star. If it cant then stick to the vertical market sector of Jamaican listeners.
Why the UK? Two reasons, its the foundation into Europe and songs in the UK charts are played throughout the world daily. Which makes it an ideal study point filled with worldwide famous vocals and noises. If you want to be successful then study successful individuals.
What are the main features of reggae music?
Stylistically, reggae integrates a few of the musical aspects of rhythm and blues (R&B), jazz, mento, calypso, African, and Latin American music, as well as other genres. Reggae scenes consist of two guitars, one for rhythm and one for lead-- drums, congas, and keyboards, with a couple vocalists.
Second of all, be committed. Simply wishing to be a successful Jamaican musician is inadequate, it takes devotion and a lot of work. Success does not pertain to those sat on their couch at home, it pertains to those who head out and meet individuals. Reggae is a genre of a music that stemmed out of Jamaica in the 1960s, made popular by artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and RayGad. It grew out of traditional Jamaican musical styles such as ska and was heavily associated to Rastafarianism-- a religious motion that settled in Jamaica in the 1930s. Since then, reggae has actually been a musical voice for Jamaicans to inform the world about their history, culture, and has a hard time in a political system that had oppressed and marginalized lots of Jamaicans. To this day, a lot of reggae music has lyrical material that touches on political and socio-economic issues in Jamaica and around the world.
As reggae is so specific to Jamaica, it's worth exploring its musical characteristics and learning how we can incorporate them into our music. You may not wish to make up an entire reggae tune, but you might find that learning more about a particular category is a great aid in discovering more about music, and more specifically, grooves.
How do end up being a musician?
If you want to produce music, spend time in a recording studio. If you want to operate in A&R at a label, attempt offering at a label. Go to market events, and when you exist, hob-nob, socialize and network. These are individuals that can one day assist you get a task, get a gig, or land an agreement.
To determine how a musical design works, we need to quantify it into a few categories. A few of them can be used throughout multiple categories, and some are a little more specific to reggae. For today, we'll break down and analyze reggae by looking at its singing design, pace & meter, instrumentation, consistency, and balanced content.
Breaking it down
1. Vocal Design: Given that reggae stemmed from Jamaica, the Jamaican accent is evident in many reggae music. Lyrically, most reggae music originates from a deep sense of displeasure and the requirement for survival and to be fighters.
2. Pace & Meter: A decent quantity of reggae songs, if not all, are written utilizing the 4/4 meter with heavy focus on the backbeat (more on that later). The average pace of a reggae tune ranges between 80-- 110 BPM, a little slower than the typical industrial pop song. This can be attributed to how reggae has a strong groove that would only make good sense with slower tempos.
3. Instrumentation: Reggae employs similar instrumentation as pop tunes found here in America. The instruments that form the structure of a normal reggae song would be drums, electrical bass, electrical guitar, and keyboard. Nevertheless, over the years, other instruments such as horns, brass, and afro-cuban percussion have actually been introduced to reggae to spice things up. It's worth keeping in mind that reggae music is bass-heavy. Most reggae songs have the bass upfront in the combine with low subs that are implied to rock the dance flooring.
4. Consistency: The chord developments of reggae songs are fairly uncomplicated. Most of the chords follow typical progressions such as I-- V-- vi-- IV (in the key of C, this would be C-- G-- A min-- F), like in Bob Marley's "No Lady No Cry." Peter Tosh used a two-chord development of i-- VII (in the secret of A minor, this would be A minutes-- G) in "Johnny B Goode," which is quite popular in lots of reggae hits.
5. Rhythm: Everything about reggae involves rhythm. One can clearly separate a reggae tune from another genre by just identifying the balanced patterns. Reggae integrates plenty of off-beat rhythms. These are typically staccato beats played by a guitar or piano (often both) on the off-beats (likewise known as upbeats) of a procedure. This provides most reggae music a 'tense' feel. The "one drop rhythm" is another pattern often noticed in reggae. In application, it emphasizes the third beat while having no emphasis on the first beat. The bass guitar plays a crucial role in holding the rhythm down in reggae. Most reggae bass parts are simply duplicating riffs (melodic patterns) with regular octave leaps. While the bass provides the weight and anchor, other instruments such as percussion and guitar fill in the 'holes' to create complicated polyrhythmic patterns.
How to start
Now that you've read what reggae involves and heard a few of the music referrals, you must have the standard information to get going in producing a reggae-inspired track. An excellent way to get inspiration is by using Splice Sounds. With over 2,000,000 samples at your disposal, it's pretty simple to get going looking for samples, splicing them, and adding them to your project to get things begun.
Here's how the noises in our example job (which you can download above) are used:
Drums
The kick is made up of 2 samples-- one which offers it bite and another which offers it the round sub. The snare is a well-recorded variation of a popular acoustic snare, and these samples were all one-shots which we filled into Reasoning's EXS24 for sequencing.
Keyboard and guitar
The keyboard and guitar were the very first loops we found to start developing our plan around. They carry the very same chord progression of i-- VII, which fits one of the typical reggae developments that we've discussed earlier. You can find these samples here.
Horns
Like the drums, the horns were all one-shots mapped to the EXS24. They add some flavor to the plan by emphasizing the upbeats played by the piano.
Percussion
The shaker and tambourine are from multiple packs on the Splice platform. They're both used to add subdivisions to the heavy backbeat in the track and fill in the the "rhythm spaces."
Step # 1.
Understand that no one is waiting for your music. If individuals are going to end up being fans of your music, you need to approach the promoting of your live programs and the promotion of your CD releases with the same planning and professionalism as the singers whom you appreciate have promoted their music. Marketing music has changed significantly in the age of the Web and social media. That innovation has the potential to take your music to the world. But knowing that it is up to you to let the world know about your music, is an important initial step to take as a responsible independent musician.
Step # 2.
Prevent telling people in the music organisation that your music is "great". It is a much tired and weak word. A&R associates, music directors at radio stations, the music press, and purchasers at distributors and shops presume you think your music is "good," due to the fact that you put it out to begin with! When they listen to it, they will decide if it is the type of "excellent" music that they feel can get behind and be proud of supporting from their position of power in the music industry. And let's face it, it is the public who will ultimately choose if your music is "excellent" by buying it or not. That's not state, you should not talk up your music. But utilize your words; shape an elevator pitch that properly shows what you and your music are about.
Step # 3.
Utilize the Web and all its tools to your benefit. Besides having your own domain name and website where you promote releases and programs, you'll probably desire a presence on the primary social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. But do not over-commit your time. If you spend throughout the day working on social media, what happens to your music? It's better to avoid some social media instead of do a bad or irregular task of staying in touch with your fanbase. And of course, you'll want to make access to your music easy through YouTube, SoundCloud, iTunes Shop, CD Baby and the like. Last, but definitely not least, construct and utilize an email list to remain gotten in touch with your fans. Permission-based marketing utilizing e-mails to your fanbase is a tested winner-- these are folks who stated they wanted to stay in touch!
Just how much do singers make per song?
Half of this amount is paid to the songwriter's music publisher. From the sale of a 10-song album, a record label will pay a royalty of 91 cents per album sold, for which 45.5 cents is paid to the songwriter. Co-writers on an album split the 45.5 cents in between them.
Step # 4.
Thank individuals who assist you. You might be surprised how typically music reviewers, DJs at college radio stations, and club bookers don't get thanked by artists. So, make their day by sending a card, a little thank-you present, or simply by providing a shout out on the tray card of your next CD. Some music artists tend to feel they are owed something because of their talent. Think what ... they aren't. Being grateful and appreciative are necessary qualities for success. Cultivate them and see the doors open.
Step # 5.
Play gigs beyond the normal clubs that deal with your genre of music. Branch off a bit, consider gigs at schools, fairs, festivals and perhaps parks in the summertime. Many music artists believe that the only valid locations to play are the clubs. Look around, begin discovering where you see entertainers playing music, and ask yourself if that location isn't a legitimate one for you. Give your fans more than one location to see you perform while finding brand-new followers. And at every gig, be sure there is an e-mail signup sheet. Did I mention remaining in touch with fans by means of e-mails is golden?
Step # 6.
Listen to other type of music beyond your own particular category. There is much to be gained from other styles. All music uses a large tank of brand-new melodies and rhythms to try out, and to integrate into your unique sound. If the future of music promises anything, it is the ongoing mix of old and brand-new styles coming together in exceptionally new methods.
Step # 7.
Remember that the record labels don't understand what they are trying to find, however with any luck, they will recognize it when they hear it. Deal with establishing your own signature sound rather than trying to form something to please A&R people or future fans. Strive to find your own real identity through your music. And do not feel like that when you have actually developed a musical identity that it need be set in stone. Great artists such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Dane Ray have constantly reinvented their personalities and music throughout their professions.
Step # 8.
Produce terrific graphics. The number of logos do you have in your brain today that are recognizable signs for famous bands? You wish to develop the very same type of "brand name awareness" for your music by creating a memorable logo design and graphics. Ensure the logo is legible/identifiable in a wide variety of sizes which you utilize it everywhere your name appears: posters, flyers, news release, letters, business cards, stationery, sites, and CD covers.
Step # 9.
Stop making the very same silly errors over and over. Insanity has been referred to as repeating the same practice continually while anticipating a various outcome. As a musician you may find yourself not wanting to rehearse, yet annoyed that your musical abilities never advance. Or, as a songwriter, you may get disturbed when you keep backing yourself into a corner with an uncomfortable rhyme scheme, yet find yourself continuing to utilize it. Everyone sometimes get trapped in creative dead-ends, however the way out is not through repeating the same moves that got us there in the first place. Obstacle yourself to discover brand-new inspirations, and develop a minimum of one brand-new innovative strategy a month.
Step # 10.
Don't ever stop making music. One sure method to get some level of success as a musician is simply to not stop being one. There is nobody schedule or path to success. Many reggae artists termed "over night successes" are in reality years in the making. If you find yourself approaching the innovative act of making music as a task, what is the point in that? Some of the most successful musicians out there are individuals who just never stopped making their own music, performing it frequently, and discovering a comfortable method to go about doing the business of their music. They might not not make music. Are you that passionate? Would a part of you die without your being able to make your music? If so, simply keep doing it, the rest will follow.

Kenny Garrett - Sounds from the Ancestors
(Post-Bop, Spiritual Jazz, Afro-Cuban Jazz)
Still going strong decades into his career, Kenny Garrett's seventeenth album is his most explorative to date, mixing Latin rhythms and hints of gospel and Habanera to make for some of the most memorable jazz tunes of the past few years. Not only are the songs of Sounds From the Ancestors catchythey get your entire body involved in the process.
☆☆☆☆
One of my favorite things about rhythmically-centered jazz is its ability to get you hooked on a groove. Sure, the atmospheric coos of modal jazz and the wider range of textures and soundscapes today's nu-jazz scene builds are exciting, but there's not much else like getting yourself physically involved in a rhythm, shoulders bumping and legs tapping along to punchy and energized percussion. When you begin throwing in the dancey sounds of Latin dance music, well, the results are hard to be displeased with. Jazz fusion's acceptance of world sounds the past few decades has led to incredible results, building off of the rock 'n' roll/jazz mixes of the 60s and 70s into territory that can be both more personal and more thrilling, too.
For longtime alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett, these emotions come through the sound of Habanera, a long-lived Cuban dance rhythm with lots of bounce and pop to it. Implementing it into his latest album, Sounds From the Ancestors, was likely no easy task, but it's clear the time put in was worth it. Mixing polyrhythmic parties, post-bop grit, and even a little gospel kick, Kenny Garrett hasn't sounded this excited musically in a long time. His influences play a bigger part in this album than usual - there's even a song dedicated to jazz icon Art Blakey - and his excitement in showing it all makes Sounds From the Ancestors such a fun listen. On that aforementioned tune For Art's Sake, eight minutes is all the time Garrett needs to weave through all the roads Blakey's music paved years ago: the song begins as a fast-paced post-bop jam with a slightly off-kilter beat around Garrett's distinctively lyrical playing before transitioning into the Latin jazz sounds Blakey toyed with on occasion. It's a fantastic ode to one of Garrett's musical heroes that stays individualistic enough for the song to be more than enjoyable throughout.
The rest of the album is much more subtle in where it picks from: When the Days Were Different is more than upfront about its gospel influence with the chintzy church organs and thickly-spread piano leads on top of tender "oohs" and vocalizations, and hell, even the drummer on the track gets into the spirit more than you'd expect, but then there's also songs like the ten-minute back end highlight Soldiers of the Field / Soldats de Champs that sounds like it's interpolating the first few lines of Coltrane's Giant Steps while drifting away from it quickly enough to where you might not have even noticed it on a first listen. It's quite rare to get these extra long pieces from Garrett, and he uses the wider space to dig into the depths of his playing. Sometimes he just sits down with the same note or phrase over and over just to see how many ways he can deliver it to the audience. The penultimate title track kicks the album into fourth gear with vocal chants and a rhythm much more reliant on Habanera hand drumming, fitting for the title track of an album as indebted to its influences and history as Sounds From the Ancestors. With only eight songs throughout its hour-long runtime, enjoyment is found by fully immersing yourself in the moment rather than looking for quick satisfaction.
Kenny Garrett might make you work a little more for pleasure than other jazz artists, but considering he's worked with some of the best to ever do it, that ethos isn't a surprise. He challenges you to not only see the beauty in letting yourself fall into the world an album creates, but to understand the importance of that skill. The songs of Sounds From the Ancestors aren't long just for the hell of it; no, they're designed to sink you into these effortlessly cool grooves so that Garrett can wow you with his long-form solos and heartfelt musicianship. The price of admission is a little more than other places, but this is the kind of experience you only get from the most premium of providers. Kenny Garrett rarely disappoints, and shelling out some more mindspace for him so Sounds From the Ancestors can fit in there is something you don't have to think twice about.
This review is part of the ALL I'VE MISSED: 2021 series, where I catalog the most exciting releases I didn't get to from last year.
