Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #14
April 12-19 2024
The Department of Commerce announced a deal with Samsung to help bring advanced semiconductor manufacturing and research and development to Texas. The deal will bring 45 billion dollars of investment to Texas to help build a research center in Taylor Texas and expand Samsung's Austin, Texas, semiconductor facility. The Biden Administration estimates this will create 21,000 new jobs. Since 1990 America has fallen from making nearly 40% of the world's semiconductor to just over 10% in 2020.
The Department of Energy announced it granted New York State $158 million to help support people making their homes more energy efficient. This is the first payment out of a $8.8 billion dollar program with 11 other states having already applied. The program will rebate Americans for improvements on their homes to lower energy usage. Americans could get as much as $8,000 off for installing a heat pump, as well as for improvements in insulation, wiring, and electrical panel. The program is expected to help save Americans $1 billion in electoral costs, and help create 50,000 new jobs.
The Department of Education began the formal process to make President Biden's new Student Loan Debt relief plan a reality. The Department published the first set of draft rules for the program. The rules will face 30 days of public comment before a second draft can be released. The Administration hopes the process can be finished by the Fall to bring debt relief to 30 million Americans, and totally eliminate the debt of 4 million former students. The Administration has already wiped out the debt of 4.3 million borrowers so far.
The Department of Agriculture announced a $1 billion dollar collaboration with USAID to buy American grown foods combat global hunger. Most of the money will go to traditional shelf stable goods distributed by USAID, like wheat, rice, sorghum, lentils, chickpeas, dry peas, vegetable oil, cornmeal, navy beans, pinto beans and kidney beans, while $50 million will go to a pilot program to see if USAID can expand what it normally gives to new products. The food aid will help feed people in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Yemen.
The Department of the Interior announced it's expanding four national wildlife refuges to protect 1.13 million wildlife habitat. The refuges are in New Mexico, North Carolina, and two in Texas. The Department also signed an order protecting parts of the Placitas area. The land is considered sacred by the Pueblos peoples of the area who have long lobbied for his protection. Security Deb Haaland the first Native American to serve as Interior Secretary and a Pueblo herself signed the order in her native New Mexico.
The Department of Labor announced new work place safety regulations about the safe amount of silica dust mine workers can be exposed to. The dust is known to cause scaring in the lungs often called black lung. It's estimated that the new regulations will save over 1,000 lives a year. The United Mine Workers have long fought for these changes and applauded the Biden Administration's actions.
The Biden Administration announced its progress in closing the racial wealth gap in America. Under President Biden the level of Black Unemployment is the lowest its ever been since it started being tracked in the 1970s, and the gap between white and black unemployment is the smallest its ever been as well. Black wealth is up 60% over where it was in 2019. The share of black owned businesses doubled between 2019 and 2022. New black businesses are being created at the fastest rate in 30 years. The Administration in 2021 Interagency Task Force to combat unfair house appraisals. Black homeowners regularly have their homes undervalued compared to whites who own comparable property. Since the Taskforce started the likelihood of such a gap has dropped by 40% and even disappeared in some states. 2023 represented a record breaking $76.2 billion in federal contracts going to small business owned by members of minority communities. This was 12% of federal contracts and the President aims to make it 15% for 2025.
The EPA announced (just now as I write this) that it plans to add PFAS, known as forever chemicals, to the Superfund law. This would require manufacturers to pay to clean up two PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. This move to force manufacturers to cover the costs of PFAS clean up comes after last week's new rule on drinking water which will remove PFAS from the nation's drinking water.
Bonus:
President Biden met a Senior named Bob in Pennsylvania who is personally benefiting from The President's capping the price of insulin for Seniors at $35, and Biden let Bob know about a cap on prosecution drug payments for seniors that will cut Bob's drug bills by more than half.

Determined to use her skills to fight inequality, South African computer scientist Raesetje Sefala set to work to build algorithms flagging poverty hotspots - developing datasets she hopes will help target aid, new housing, or clinics.
From crop analysis to medical diagnostics, artificial intelligence (AI) is already used in essential tasks worldwide, but Sefala and a growing number of fellow African developers are pioneering it to tackle their continent's particular challenges.
Local knowledge is vital for designing AI-driven solutions that work, Sefala said.
"If you don't have people with diverse experiences doing the research, it's easy to interpret the data in ways that will marginalise others," the 26-year old said from her home in Johannesburg.
Africa is the world's youngest and fastest-growing continent, and tech experts say young, home-grown AI developers have a vital role to play in designing applications to address local problems.
"For Africa to get out of poverty, it will take innovation and this can be revolutionary, because it's Africans doing things for Africa on their own," said Cina Lawson, Togo's minister of digital economy and transformation.
"We need to use cutting-edge solutions to our problems, because you don't solve problems in 2022 using methods of 20 years ago," Lawson told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a video interview from the West African country.
Digital rights groups warn about AI's use in surveillance and the risk of discrimination, but Sefala said it can also be used to "serve the people behind the data points". ...
'Delivering Health'
As COVID-19 spread around the world in early 2020, government officials in Togo realized urgent action was needed to support informal workers who account for about 80% of the country's workforce, Lawson said.
"If you decide that everybody stays home, it means that this particular person isn't going to eat that day, it's as simple as that," she said.
In 10 days, the government built a mobile payment platform - called Novissi - to distribute cash to the vulnerable.
The government paired up with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) think tank and the University of California, Berkeley, to build a poverty map of Togo using satellite imagery.
Using algorithms with the support of GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that uses AI to distribute cash transfers, the recipients earning less than $1.25 per day and living in the poorest districts were identified for a direct cash transfer.
"We texted them saying if you need financial help, please register," Lawson said, adding that beneficiaries' consent and data privacy had been prioritized.
The entire program reached 920,000 beneficiaries in need.
"Machine learning has the advantage of reaching so many people in a very short time and delivering help when people need it most," said Caroline Teti, a Kenya-based GiveDirectly director.
'Zero Representation'
Aiming to boost discussion about AI in Africa, computer scientists Benjamin Rosman and Ulrich Paquet co-founded the Deep Learning Indaba - a week-long gathering that started in South Africa - together with other colleagues in 2017.
"You used to get to the top AI conferences and there was zero representation from Africa, both in terms of papers and people, so we're all about finding cost effective ways to build a community," Paquet said in a video call.
In 2019, 27 smaller Indabas - called IndabaX - were rolled out across the continent, with some events hosting as many as 300 participants.
One of these offshoots was IndabaX Uganda, where founder Bruno Ssekiwere said participants shared information on using AI for social issues such as improving agriculture and treating malaria.
Another outcome from the South African Indaba was Masakhane - an organization that uses open-source, machine learning to translate African languages not typically found in online programs such as Google Translate.
On their site, the founders speak about the South African philosophy of "Ubuntu" - a term generally meaning "humanity" - as part of their organization's values.
"This philosophy calls for collaboration and participation and community," reads their site, a philosophy that Ssekiwere, Paquet, and Rosman said has now become the driving value for AI research in Africa.
Inclusion
Now that Sefala has built a dataset of South Africa's suburbs and townships, she plans to collaborate with domain experts and communities to refine it, deepen inequality research and improve the algorithms.
"Making datasets easily available opens the door for new mechanisms and techniques for policy-making around desegregation, housing, and access to economic opportunity," she said.
African AI leaders say building more complete datasets will also help tackle biases baked into algorithms.
"Imagine rolling out Novissi in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast ... then the algorithm will be trained with understanding poverty in West Africa," Lawson said.
"If there are ever ways to fight bias in tech, it's by increasing diverse datasets ... we need to contribute more," she said.
But contributing more will require increased funding for African projects and wider access to computer science education and technology in general, Sefala said.
Despite such obstacles, Lawson said "technology will be Africa's savior".
"Let's use what is cutting edge and apply it straight away or as a continent we will never get out of poverty," she said. "It's really as simple as that."

July 4, 1976: Entebbe Rescue ⚡️🇮🇱 On 26.6.76, the terror groups, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Red Army Faction (a West German radical leftist group) hijacked an Air France plane flying from Israel to France. They took 248 passengers hostage and released 148 non-Israeli or Jewish hostages after stopping in Athens. After, they flew to Uganda and demanded the release of 47 terrorists or they would shoot the hostages. Lt. Colonel Joshua Shani was tasked in leading the rescue with two days to plan. Working with Lt. Col. Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu, they formulated a plan in those two days, improvising for the remaining challenges. They decided to use President Idi Amin’s nightly route to their advantage, driving up in vehicles similar to his convoy to approach the terminal discreetly.  Although the mission hadn’t been approved by the Israeli government, the planes took off #onthisday due to time constraints. Flying low to avoid radar detection, they reached Uganda despite encountering bad weather. The paratroopers dismounted, engaged with security forces, and stormed the terminal.  Simultaneously, the IDF destroyed eight out of twelve Ugandan Air Force planes to prevent pursuit. The hostages were rescued, loaded onto a plane, and flown to Israel. The mission was a success, saving 102 out of the remaining 106 hostages. Lt. Col. Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu was killed in action and 3 of the hostages were also lost in the process. Lt. Colonel Joshua Shani and Lt. Col. Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu got widespread recognition for their bravery and leadership. They were commended by the Israeli government and received military honors for their role in saving the hostages. Many, including the UN and Uganda itself, condemned the rescue in a similar fashion as some did in the recent Gaza hostage rescue mission last month.  The mission was as a testament to the elite training and capabilities of the IDF in executing complex and high-risk operations. The event also led to a reassessment of airport security measures. This was one of many hijackings from Palestinian terror groups in the 70’s in a backwards attempt to gain international attention.

Palestine History and resources.
I didn't add absolutely everything I could have because it would of been too much, just a generalization and resources to help anyone needing to learn or give resources to. feel free to discus, critique or add anything you find relevant.
Prior to the 19th century the region of Palestine experienced 401 years of relative peace from 1517-1917. And everything prior to that is largely irrelevant to the modern issue.
Late 19th Century:
In the 1880s, the community of Palestinian Jews, known as the Yishuv, amounted to three percent of the total population. In contrast to the Zionist Jews who would arrive in Palestine later, the original Yishuv did not aspire to build a modern Jewish state in Palestine.
From 1882 onward, thousands of Eastern European and Russian Jews began settling in Palestine; pushed by the anti-Semitic persecution and pogroms they were facing in the Russian Empire, and the appeal of Zionism.
After the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire (1517-1914), the British occupied Palestine as part of the secret Sykes-Picot treaty of 1916 between Britain and France to divvy up the Middle East for imperial interests.
1895-onward- Theodor Herzl: Herzl, an Austrian journalist, is considered the father of modern Zionism. He advocated for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Argentina, Uganda or ultimately Palestine, with what he called transfer (ethnic displacement). On the surface he was doing this to address rising anti-Semitism in Europe but with further reading of his intentions it was more a selfish power grab through a colonial settler project with little concern for "the Jewish question" other than what it could do for him. E.G." I could accept a mass request from the little Jews to lead them out only if all the governments concerned asked me to, promised me their sympathetic cooperation, and gave me guarantees for the peaceful completion of the enormous task, just as I would give them guarantees for an exodus without economic ill-effects. (I don’t know whether I should have this printed in Roman type)." -One such example among many.
In his Diary everything is painted out in detail of his attempts to get huge loans and what he plans to do with the power he gains.
Theodor Herzl, wrote: "We shall try to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries, while denying it any employment in our own country. The property-owners will come over to our side. Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly. June 12th 1895 Diary Entry"
Herzl was suggesting that two possible Zionist solutions to the problem of a Palestinian majority living in Palestine — separation and transfer — were not necessarily alternatives but rather could be mutually reinforcing. Not only that: he believed, if they were used together, the process of ethnic cleansing could be made to appear voluntary, the choice of the victims. It may be that this was both his most enduring legacy and his major innovation to settler colonialism.
The Complete Diaries Of Theodor Herzl - https://archive.org/stream/TheCompleteDiariesOfTheodorHerzl_201606/TheCompleteDiariesOfTheodorHerzlEngVolume1_OCR_djvu.txt
Early 20th Century: Balfour Declaration (1917): Written in 1917 by then UK foreign secretary, Lord Arthur Balfour, the Declaration signed away the land of Palestine to the Zionist colonial project. By giving their support to Zionist goals in Palestine, the British hoped they could shore up support among the significant Jewish populations in the US and Russia for the Allied effort during WWI. They also believed the Balfour Declaration would secure their control over Palestine after the war.
Between 1922 and 1935, the Jewish population rose from nine percent to nearly 27 percent of the total population, displacing tens of thousands of Palestinian tenants from their lands as Zionists bought land from absentee landlords. Leading Arab and Palestinian intellectuals openly warned against the motifs of the Zionist movement in the press as early as 1908. With the Nazi seizure of power in Germany between 1933 and 1936, 30,000 to 60,000 European Jews arrived on the shores of Palestine.
In 1936, Palestinian Arabs launched a large-scale uprising against the British and their support for Zionist settler-colonialism, known as the Arab Revolt. The British authorities crushed the revolt, which lasted until 1939, violently; they destroyed at least 2,000 Palestinian homes, put 9,000 Palestinians in concentration camps and subjected them to violent interrogation, including torture, and deported 200 Palestinian nationalist leaders. In 1944, several Zionist armed groups declared war on Britain for trying to put limits on Jewish immigration to Palestine at a time when Jews were fleeing the Holocaust. The Zionist paramilitary organizations launched a number of attacks against the British – the most notable of which was the King David Hotel bombing in 1946 where the British administrative headquarters were housed; 91 people were killed in the attack.
In early 1947, the British government announced it would be handing over the disaster it had created in Palestine to the United Nations and ending its colonial project there. On November 29, 1947, the UN adopted Resolution 181, recommending the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states.
Quotes: Before May 15, some of the most infamous massacres had already been committed; the Baldat al-Sheikh massacre on December 31, 1947, killing up to 70 Palestinians; the Sa’sa’ massacre on February 14, 1948, when 16 houses were blown up and 60 people lost their lives; and the Deir Yassin massacre on April 9, 1948, when about 110 Palestinian men, women and children were slaughtered.
August 1937, "transfer" was a major subject of discussion at the Twentieth Zionist Congress in Zurich, Switzerland. Alluding to the systematic dispossession of Palestinian peasants (fellahin) that Zionist organizations had been engaged in for years, David Ben-Gurion, who would become Israel's first prime minister in 1948, stated: " You are no doubt aware of the [Jewish National Fund's] activity in this respect. Now a transfer of a completely different scope will have to be carried out. In many parts of the country new settlement will not be possible without transferring the Arab fellahin." He concluded: "Jewish power [in Palestine], which grows steadily, will also increase our possibilities to carry out this transfer on a large scale."
In June 1938, Ben-Gurion told a meeting of the Jewish Agency: "I support compulsory transfer. I don't see anything immoral in it."
In December 1940, Joseph Weitz, director of the Jewish National Fund's Lands Department, which was tasked with acquiring land for the Zionist enterprise in Palestine, wrote in his diary: There is no way besides transferring the Arabs from here to the neighboring countries, and to transfer all of them, save perhaps for [the Arabs of] Bethlehem, Nazareth and Old Jerusalem. Not one village must be left, not one [bedouin] tribe. And only after this transfer will the country be able to absorb millions of our brothers and the Jewish problem will cease to exist. There is no other solution.
1948 Arab-Israeli War (Plan Dalet & Nakba (Catastrophe) ):Creation of Israel: Israel declared independence, leading to a war with surrounding Arab states. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled, leading to mass displacement and refugee crisis.
Details of Plan Dalet On March 10, 1948, Zionist political and military leaders, including Ben-Gurion, met in Tel Aviv and formally adopted Plan Dalet (or Plan D). The operational military orders specified which Palestinian population centers should be targeted and laid out in detail a blueprint for their forcible depopulation and destruction. It called for: Mounting operations against enemy population centers located inside or near our defensive system in order to prevent them from being used as bases by an active armed force. These operations can be divided into the following categories: Destruction of villages (setting fire to, blowing up, and planting mines in the debris), especially those population centers which are difficult to control continuously Mounting search and control operations according to the following guidelines: encirclement of the village and conducting a search inside it. In the event of resistance, the armed force must be destroyed and the population must be expelled outside the borders of the state. The Haganah (soon to be Israeli army) launched military operations under Plan Dalet at the beginning of April 1948. Although attacks by Zionist forces against Palestinian population centers actually began a few days after the UN Partition Plan was passed on November 29, 1947, with the adoption of Plan Dalet expulsions accelerated and became systematic, marking a new phase in the conflict in which Zionist and then Israeli forces went on "the offensive," in the words of Israeli historian Benny Morris. Following Israel's establishment on May 14, 1948, the new Israeli government set up an unofficial body, the "Transfer Committee," to oversee the destruction of Palestinian towns and villages or their re-population with Jews, and to prevent displaced Palestinians from returning to their homes. In a report presented to Ben-Gurion in June 1948, the three-man committee, which included the JNF's Weitz, called for the "destruction of villages as much as possible during military operations."

Results-
By the time the state of Israel was declared on May 14, 1948, more than 200 Palestinian villages had already been emptied as people fled in fear or were forcibly expelled by Zionist forces, and approximately 175,000 Palestinians had been made refugees. By 1949, at least 750,000 Palestinians had been made refugees, losing their land, homes and other belongings in what became known as the "Nakba" ("catastrophe"). Their flight was accelerated by massacres such as the one that took place on April 9, 1948, at Deir Yassin near Jerusalem, where approximately 100 Palestinian men, women, and children were murdered by Zionist paramilitaries. Today, refugees displaced during Israel's creation and their descendants number approximately 7.1 million people. Some 400 Palestinian towns and villages, including vibrant urban centers, were systematically destroyed or taken over by Israeli. Most of them were demolished to prevent the return of their Palestinian residents, now refugees outside of what would become Israel's internationally recognized borders, or internally displaced inside of them.

Post-1948 Period:
Quotes:
“If I were an Arab leader, I would never sign an agreement with Israel. It is normal; we have taken their country. It is true God promised it to us, but how could that interest them? Our God is not theirs. There has been Anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They see but one thing: we have come and we have stolen their country. Why would they accept that?” David Ben-Gurion (the first Israeli Prime Minister): Quoted by Nahum Goldmann in Le Paraddoxe Juif (The Jewish Paradox), pp99
1967- Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights after the 1967 Six-Day War. Jewish settlements were established in these territories, leading to ongoing tensions and disputes.
1973- Yom Kippur War
1987- Hamas formed.
Peace Process and Oslo Accords (1990s):Peace Attempts: Several peace negotiations took place between Israel and Palestine, leading to the Oslo Accords in 1993, which established limited Palestinian self-rule in parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Early 21st Century: Second Intifada (2000-2005): A period of intensified Israeli-Palestinian violence and unrest, leading to significant loss of life on both sides.
In 2004, Giaora Eiland, who still is, incidentally, in the inner circle of Benjamin Netanyahu right now as I speak. He described Gaza as, quote, “a huge concentration camp.” That's Gaza.
September 2005- Israel completed implementation of its Disengagement Plan from the Gaza Strip, which included dismantling all the settlements there, evacuating the settlers to Israel and withdrawing the military. After the plan was fully implemented, Israel issued an order declaring the end of its military rule in the Gaza Strip, indicating it was no longer responsible for the safety and well-being of the population in Gaza. But the territory remained under blockade, leading to economic hardship and conflict.
2006-
Here was an election in the West Bank in Gaza, parliamentary elections. Those elections were urged on the Palestinian people by the US administration was that now forgotten moment in the Bush administration called “democracy promotion.” And part of this package called “democracy promotion” was the Palestinians were supposed to participate in those wonderful democratic experiences. And Hamas was urged to participate in those elections, and it reversed itself. Hitherto, it opposed participating in any elections in the occupied territories, because those elections were a consequence of the Oslo Accord. And since Hamas opposed the Oslo Accord, it opposed participating in the elections. But it reversed itself. It ran in a civilian political party. And, much to the surprise of Hamas and everybody else, it won the election. Those were, according to former US President Jimmy Carter, “completely fair and honest elections,” and Hamas won. What did the US and Israel do? It immediately imposed a brutal blockade on Gaza, which brought economic life in Gaza to a standstill. - Norman Finkelstein
*When Hamas was elected, it repeatedly sent out peace feelers to try and resolve the conflict with Israel. It presented on its own, or as speaking for itself, the terms of the international consensus for resolving a conflict, namely two states on the June 1967 border.
June 2007- After Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip, Israel further tightened its control of the crossings and rarely allowed Palestinians to enter or leave Gaza, or to import or export goods. Three months after the Hamas takeover, in response to the continued firing of Qassam rockets at Israel, Israel’s security cabinet declared the Gaza Strip a hostile entity and adopted collective punitive measures, including cutting back electricity and fuel supply to Gaza
2008-
June 2008 there was a ceasefire arranged between Israel and Hamas. The ceasefire held, it held in June, it held in July, it held in August, it held in September, it held in October, and it held the first four days in November. And then November 4th came along, that was election day. when everybody's attention was riveted on the presidential election and the first black president being elected in our country's history. And Israel used that moment -- when all the cameras were diverted from it -- it used that moment to attack Hamas in Gaza and broke the ceasefire. Go and read what Amnesty International said.
Operation Cast Lead- Dec 27, 2008 – Jan 18, 2009 https://imeu.org/article/operation-cast-lead
2012-
Operation Pillar of Defense- Nov 13, 2012 – Nov 21, 2012
After Operation Cast Lead, there was a slight relaxing of the brutal blockade of Gaza. The Gaza economy did show some signs of recovery. And there was also money starting to pour in from Qatar. The head of state of Turkey, Erdoğan, was planning on a visit to Gaza. And this annoyed Israel because Gaza was not supposed to prosper. So what did they do? The record is clear. They assassinated a senior Hamas official Ahmad Jabari and six others. Shortly afterwards, Israel pounded the Gaza Strip with another 20 air strikes, killing five more people, two of them children, Hamas health minister Mufid Mukhalalati said in a televised press conference at Gaza City’s Shifa hospital.
2014-
Operation Protective Edge-
2,200 Palestinians killed, of whom 550 were children. They demolished 18,000 homes.
2018- Gaza March to return Massacre May 14th
On May 14th 2018 The Palestinian people of Gaza were in continuing peaceful marches Up to the walls imprisoning them with hopes that the apartheid regime of Israel would have some humanity and hear their plea with a right to return, to be given basic human rights as they had been doing since March 30th 2018. Instead of being shown humanity IDF soldiers began an especially discriminatory attack on the peaceful protestors. The causalities for that day alone stood at 2700 injured, including 1,359 from live ammunition and 235 Children. The dead included six children under the age of 18, among them a 15-year-old girl, and a medic and at least 52 adults. The toll increased exponentially through the course of the multiple week protest with numbers in 12,000 plus victims range 1000 of which children and hundreds of medics and journalists in appropriate identifying garb.
Many IDF soldiers have gone on record to brag about their statistics in competition with each other It is callous and bitter but I'll provide a link to some accounts of this .
Further, Shireen Abu Akleh an American-Palestinian journalist was wearing full reporter protective gear and was intentionally sniped in the neck killing her, they then lied about it and admitted to it a significant amount of time later. At her funeral the procession was subject to pogroms by Israeli police not even giving her peace in death.

Recent Events:
The amount of atrocities are too numerous to list them all here but i would like to list some from September of 2023 at least.
September 2023-
September 5th- Israeli forces killed two Palestinians, including one child, in two operations that involved the exchange of fire in Tulkarm and Jericho. September 9th-Israeli forces killed a Palestinian child in Hebron. September 13th- Five Palestinian were killed in the Gaza Strip as an explosive device went off near Israel’s perimeter fence. On 16 and 17 September, large groups of Israelis, including settlers, entered the Old City of Jerusalem during the Jewish New Year. Israeli authorities deployed police officers and restricted Palestinian movement in and out of the Old City, during which they physically assaulted and injured an elderly Palestinian man and arrested at least two others. On 17 September, Israeli forces restricted Palestinian access to the Al Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem, allowing entry only to those over the age of 50 for the dawn prayers. That morning, about 400 Israelis, including settlers, accessed the compound accompanied by Israeli police, who evacuated Palestinian worshipers to secure the entry of Israelis. On 16 September, settlers stabbed a Palestinian man in the back and threw stones and bottles at Palestinian houses in Tel Rumeida neighborhood of Hebron city, in the Israeli-controlled H2 area.
Prior to October for 2023 Israeli forces killed 181 Palestinians in the West Bank or Israel, exceeding the yearly death toll by Israeli forces in the West Bank since 2005. During the reporting period in September, 173 Palestinians, including at least 58 children, were injured by Israeli forces across the West Bank, including 11 who were hit by live ammunition. Since the beginning of the year, 769 Palestinians have been injured by live ammunition by Israeli forces in the West Bank, nearing the double of the number in the equivalent period in 2022 (460). Over 1,100 Palestinian herders from 28 communities have been displaced since 2022, citing settler violence and shrinking access to grazing land.
More here: https://www.ochaopt.org/poc/5-18-september-2023
October 2023-
October 1st- injury of several Palestinians in a number of attacks by Israeli occupation forces and settlers across the occupied West Bank.
October 4th- Israeli troops killed three Palestinian in West Bank. One of which the IDF said it opened fire at a man who threw a block at an Israeli vehicle. Palestinian health officials said a 19 year old Palestinian man was shot in the chest and killed. The army said Israeli settlers also vandalized Palestinian property. No further details were immediately released. October 5th- Israeli forces killed two Palestinians and wounded dozens more while suffering five injuries as they raided several areas in the occupied West Bank October 6th- Labib Dumaidi, 19, was shot in the heart by an Israeli settler in west bank. October 7th- Hamas launches an attack 1,400 Israelis were killed in the assault, and more than 240 were taken hostage. Israel's immediate response before even tending to the attack is to start bombing Gaza indiscriminately. Multiple survivors and hostage testimony tell Israeli solders opened fire on Israeli citizens and Hamas in hannibal directive. Israel claims 40 babies beheaded and the claim gets parroted all the way up to the president of the united states without a substantiated evidence, another addition in an ocean of lies. Due to the fog of war I'm only writing about statistics here on out.
After math.
Week one- 7,473 U.S. bombs were dropped on Afghanistan in 2019. 6,000 Israeli bombs have been dropped on Gaza in 6 days. 2,383 Palestinians killed half children 9,714 wounded, while in the West Bank, 54 were recorded dead and 1,100 wounded 1.1 Million Displaced.
One Month-
10,000 Palestinians killed 70% children. 25,000 injuries. 1.5 Million Displaced.
War Crimes- Numerous including Genocide, collective punishment, Use of white phosphorus during the offensive and many more…
The UN Genocide Convention lists five acts that fall under the definition of Genocide. Israel is currently perpetrating three of these in Gaza: “1. Killing members of the group. 2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group. 3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated with intent to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.”
Recent Quotes-
Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav “We are imposing a complete siege on Gaza. No electricity, no food, no water, no fuel. Everything is closed. We are fighting human animals, and we will act accordingly.” Isaac Herzog - "It is an entire nation out there that is responsible. This rhetoric about civilians supposedly not being involved is absolutely untrue" Benjamin Natanyahu - "We will turn Gaza into an island of ruins." Daniel Hagari - "We are dropping hundreds of tons of bombs on Gaza. The focus is on destruction, not accuracy." Ariel Kallner - "Now there is only one goal: Nakba. A Nakba in Gaza that will dwarf the Nakba of 1948." Benjamin Nantanyahu - “They are committed to completely eliminating this evil from the world,” Netanyahu said in Hebrew. He then added: “You must remember what Amalek has done to you, says our Holy Bible. And we do remember.” In the Hebrew Bible, particularly in the Book of 1 Samuel, there is a command attributed to God that King Saul is supposed to destroy the Amalekites entirely, sparing nothing and no one. The exact verse, from 1 Samuel 15:3 (New International Version), states:
"Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys."
This command, often referred to as the "ban" or "herem" in biblical studies, was a severe form of religious sanction where everything associated with the enemy was devoted to destruction.

Have you heard of Liberia Chimpanzee Project? What are your thoughts? It's on tv right now and making me feel weird
We've had a few people express concern over the Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection mostly due to the organization allowing chimps close contact with domestic dogs, people in the project having unprotected contact with the chimps, and the founders being a white American couple. It's great that people are learning and being skeptical!
We want people to recognize red flags but it is important to note that our blog has a largely Western focus and that while some practices are always unethical, many are context dependant.
The founders of LCRP are Jenny and Jimmy Desmond, and while they are white Americans, their work in Africa started years before they founded LCRP. They began in 1999 by visiting an orangutan sanctuary, and spent the next few years volunteering at multiple sites in Africa and Asia to both help wildlife and learn how wildlife rescue organizations operate successfully. They helped rehabilitate an orphaned chimp for the first time in 2000 with the Uganda Wildlife Education Center and the success of helping Matooke the chimp solidified their ambition. They returned to the United States and Jimmy entered vet school while Jenny worked in non-profit marketting and fundraising.
It wasn't until 2010 that they began working directly with chimpanzees in Africa again in various countries, and they did so in conjunction with reputable orgs such as The Jane Goodall Institute, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, EcoHealth Alliance, Smithsonian Institute, and the Uganda Wildlife Education Center. The Desmonds moved to Liberia at the request of the Humane Society of the United States in 2015 to care for a group of 66 chimpanzees that had been retired from medical research and since abandonned. This was the true start of the LCRP that we know today as word spread that the Desmonds could care for chimps and orphans were brought to them.
While pictures of the founders and their dog snuggling with baby chimps may look alarming to those atuned to the red flags we talk about on this blog, the sanctuary itself operates with the aim of prioritizing the type of lives chimps have in the wild. Orphans are taken care of by the Desmonds' as infants and integrated into family groups when they are independant enough, and they have had great success with this.
Additionally, LCRP is a driving force in partnering and working with local and international orgs to create better policy and practices for protecting wildlife. A major component of this is the creation of an anti-wildlife trafficking task force that confiscates wildlife that has been poached to be rehabilitated and returned to their natural habitat. The list of the LCRP's acheivments is a mile long and the work they do on the scale of individual chimps, working with local people and organizations, to international policy and protocol is nothing short of incredible. The Desmonds' are experts who have dedicated their lives to a cause, and it shows.
As professionals in this industry, they should absolutely do better to post content that does not misconstrue their mission or indirectly contribute to the desire for pet chimps. We hope they do better on this front, but their work in whole is strong!
So when you see photos or videos from LCRP, these aren't random chimp snugglers who are posing as a sanctuary to get photos of apes posing with their dog, these are people who have been working since the 90s to secure a future for chimps in Liberia. You can learn more and donate on their website!
Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection is super amazing!

Saturday morning meeting with the (wo)man from the Ministry!
11th March 2023
Dr Hafsa is the lead for mental health in the Ministry of Health. We have known her for some years and she is always very welcoming of Jamie’s Fund. On our part, as with Butabika and the PCO School, we think it important to stay fully in touch with Ugandan psychiatry, to ensure we are in line with their current policy and strategic direction.
Having said all that, it was a bit of a surprise to be invited out for coffee/breakfast with Dr Hafsa on a Saturday morning. We met her at Café Java in one of the malls. We thought she liked and approved of JF. After the hug she gave me today, I’m convinced!
Tumblr media
We had a very good catch up, filling her in on progress in JF and hearing from her how things are in the Ministry. We knew that there have been substantial cuts to most health budgets, mental health included. We are also very concerned to hear the extent of the cuts to drugs budgets.
Dr Hafsa has quite a battle to ensure any kind of strategic direction for the mental health service, and we don’t envy her her task. As in most health services around the world, mental health will almost never attain any kind of priority in the allocation of resources. Dr Hafsa knows that if we can help, we will, and she now knows the extent of progress in mhGAP made by JF, and that we are supporting training of PCOs, which can only be helpful to mental health services.
We drove out the slow road to Mukono and E enjoyed taking photos of different road side scenes and businesses.

Why the traffic was moving slowly.
We have come now to a new hotel, and are discovering its attractions. We didn’t know we had a door bell at the entrance to our room until it rang! and a young lady presented us with a basket of fruit.
Tumblr media
Which reminds us to tell you that there are about five different kinds of banana here in Uganda. Did you know that?
The hotel is set on an industrial estate, interestingly different for a brisk walk together. On return I walked on into the gym for a bit of treadmilling.
Treadling away, I gradually  realised that one of the teams being intently watched on the TV by the gym instructor was Liverpool.
He nearly fell off his perch with excitement when I revealed my Liverpudlian origins and that we lived so close.
"So have you been to the gym at Anfield then?"
Um, no...!
Sorry to disappoint. One of his lifetime ambitions is to come to Anfield.
Sadly Bournemouth beat Liverpool by 1-0 on this occasion.

Peace of Mind is hard to find but when you get it, it is the most amazing thing one can hold onto. There many things on this earth that bring about this transition in evolution however the question is, what is this for you and is it all you ever wanted. Family is such a thing and it is but all there is.
Humanity is a way of existence that we all have to exist as. Clearly there different contexts of this reality and how we decide to live comes down to this definition, So what is humanity to you.
Honor is a word i find very interesting and its division to honesty and transparency even more so does create a question of self. How does one become as it were open minded and too of forthcoming speech with open sourced coherence. Inceptive or Deceptive is what we should ask of ourselves.
Family is on my mind, the entirity of category from close, extended and unknown family.
Life is on my mind, and as a Ugandan, it is the life of all that i speak of, not mine, yours or the next person but indeed everyone.
The politics of Uganda are very diverse as are the people. And long before politics as we have come to know and practise it, we were a people who embraced first and foremost, politics of the heart, which was engineered by the spirit and soul, then we thereafter engaged politics of the mind. So we must ask ourselves whether we acknowledge the difference in what politics was and what it has become.
What is never on my mind should be question of intrigue. One is never low on hope nor is one short on faith and well, one simply is lifeless without Love.
One has long thought of a world different to the one we know, and not to say there ain't a number of beautiful and admirable things about planet earth but speaking of a land I grew up in, Kampala Uganda, the most diverse and integrated community with tremendous desirable attributes of surmount characteristic that I know of, it is painful even saddening to see a country such as this one, continuously undergo tyrannical magnitudes of madness. But there is hope yet and indeed the love of this great nation remains at heart. Like human beings who consistently need rethinking of their existence, there is great future of change that will awash this wonderful of country. The pearl of Africa it was named and well as testimony may have it, only time will heal its setbacks and the best of vision is yet to be captivated to length of spatial longevity as a nation of endurance and perseverance that has no end to attaining a momentous of through and through beauty. Faith that God created this nation as testament of everlasting new beginnings.
What's in front of one is more important than what is behind and for that reason I have a vision non like any before.
There is no comparison of any one given person as the creator makes no mistakes. There can only be one like ourselves as is the capacity of every rain drop. Our destiny is to comprehend our gravity of extent to the bigger picture. But together we have the power and will to foresee a change none like any. There is no comparison of what we all could achieve and henceforth manifest as units of change to a world we all have come to call home. mi casa es su casa. Can't we all just get along.
Has planet earth become more or less a paradise of happiness or sorrow. It is not individual but diverse interconnectedness of all that exists that we must answer this question. Have the hopes and dreams of men and women as once children become as such the world visioned. Humanity is peace, love, harmony and tranquility. A pact of sisterhood and brotherhood that is without boundaries but both internal and external projection of trajectory advancement as an evolved species. Life on planet earth must be corrected and effectively enriched in this generation. For it is the time of healing that we all have been tasked with and after the greatest of all monumental captivation, rebuilding the foundation of essence as residents of this realm.
The Police Man and The Army Man.
This is a story that takes us
Into the workings of power.
It was on this occassion
That someone screamed for help
As the tale is told
They were robbed by two men
And two men came to the rescue.
A police man who'd only just begun
On the first day of his duty
And an army man
Passing through town
On this particular event.
An argument broke out between the two
Over who should handle the case.
The army man insisted he was higher ranking
And the policeman claimed jurisdiction.
Confused in conflict another call was made
Attention Gentlemen please
At ease with eachother
We need your assistance.
And in an instance
A quarrelsome battle seized
Together they answered
At your service.
Again we have been violated
By whom asked the policeman
And in reply by strangers.
What did they take
Our harvest as we are grangers.
In what direction asked the policeman
They headed west in pointing assertion
And by what means did they travel
By cycle answered in address politeness
Was it bicycle or motorcycle
By both actually in so recollection
The stunned army man on foot requested
Might we commandeer your tractor
And the police man backed this petition
Both setting off in pursuit of the wrongdoers.
They returned with two captured suspects.
One had a motorcycle and the other a bicycle
But with no harvest to show.
So they asked whether they recognized either
And a resounding no as they wore masks followed
And too, it was the wee hours of the morning
And being day light right now in that moment
All they could remember was that
One sounded like a woman
And the other like a man
But the apprehended were both men
The policeman and army man said oh men
What are we to do
The victims broke into tears
And this was their worst fear.
To be continued
The Lion Prince and Dragon Princess.
Once upon a time
In a land not so distant
Far in the heart of the Jungle
Amidst the vast savanna plains
Was a prince.
None like any of the young men
He was adventurous and known by many
As the most mischievous ever.
His nature very much like the wild
With love for the earth everlasting
He alone would become the first
To travel the lands across the mountains.
On the other side of the world
Was a princess.
Known as the Dragon princess
She was the soul of the mountains
And the valleys alike.
Her spirit matched to the prince
Was one of Adventure and dreams.
It was in this clasp that the two
Would one day as destiny intended
Meet and fall in Love.
Like every tale told
It was not an easy road
At crossroads is where
They would find challenges
Set upon them in time.
The evil witches and wizards who worked
For the evil queens and kings
Would stop at nothing to
See them apart from course.
But the universe no match
For the spells of wickedness
Would fail at every attempt.
For it was the union of these two
That the lion and the dragon
Would become as such pact
To conquer all evil adact.
The young prince had a companion
A lion that was well adapted
With the lands as his playground
And the Princess on the other hand
With a Dragon that rode the skies
With zeal and might.
Together they would become
The beginning of dreams
With no end to love
That was unbreakable.
For centuries it is believed
That seers into the future
Would try and bend all time
To stop such becoming.
And that it was this very unlikely
But destined union
That would break the curse
Known as the war on peace.
The union would be
One that mended all rage
A chapter into a new age
Of time where love reigned.
A moments glance into
A people freed from
Enslavement of hate.
The earth lands and
The sky bands would
Forever be bound
Together for eternity
As the lion and dragon union
A match made in heaven
And destined by the universe.
To be Continued

Lured by a Job Offer, Trapped in a Web of Scams: One Man's Story of Survival
Internet scammers are raking in billions from unsuspecting victims globally. In one scam operation based in Southeast Asia, workers would celebrate with drumbeats and chants each time they tricked someone into sending money through dating apps. This grim celebration was witnessed by Jalil Muyeke, a 32-year-old Ugandan, who found himself trapped inside one such compound in Myanmar—not as a scam victim, but as a forced participant in the schemes.
Tumblr media
A Fake Job Offer Turns Into a Nightmare
Muyeke's ordeal began when he was lured by a promising job offer that seemed too good to pass up. He had been working as a mattress sales supervisor in Uganda when a former school friend told him about a data entry job in Bangkok offering $2,500 a month. With a baby on the way, Muyeke saw it as an opportunity to build a better future for his family. But what seemed like a chance to improve his life quickly turned into a nightmare.
Upon arriving in Thailand, Muyeke and another recruit were greeted by a series of red flags. Their journey, which should have ended in Bangkok, instead led them deep into Myanmar, where they were taken to a heavily-guarded compound controlled by a Chinese organized crime syndicate. The compound was one of many used to carry out large-scale internet scams, staffed with trafficked workers under the constant threat of violence.
A Life of Scamming Under Duress
Muyeke’s captors specialized in "pig butchering" scams, a con that preys on victims by first building trust—often through online romances—before defrauding them. Muyeke was forced to adopt a fake persona: a fashion designer living in San Francisco, who lured unsuspecting victims into investing in fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes. Like many others trapped in similar circumstances, Muyeke didn’t want to participate in the scams but had no choice. He worked long, grueling hours with no end in sight, fearing the violent consequences if he refused.
Despite the emotional toll of deceiving people, Muyeke clung to the hope of survival. After nearly seven months of captivity, he managed to negotiate his release, convincing his captors to let him take a sick Ugandan woman with him as well.
A Journey to Freedom
Even after being released from the compound, Muyeke’s troubles weren’t over. With no valid visa and little money, he faced the daunting task of escaping Myanmar and avoiding being treated as a criminal by Thai authorities. After turning himself in, he spent several weeks in detention centers before finally returning home to Uganda in April—three months after his son was born.
Rebuilding his life has been a challenge. Crowds and technology trigger traumatic memories, but therapy has helped him begin the healing process. Muyeke now works as an intern researching human trafficking, determined to raise awareness about the dangers of modern-day slavery.
“Many people don’t realize what’s really happening out there,” he said. “I’m one of the lucky ones who got out.”

Back with the boda-bodas, criss-crossing Kampala
8th—9th March 2023
8th—9th March 2023
Our journey from the east back to the centre was relatively straightforward and only took about 4 ½ hours. On arrival at a familiar hotel, the Duomo, we could get straight to work on the daily tasks of the report for JF, and thinking about the blog and whether we had the energy to write it at that moment!
Tumblr media
Clear roads 😃
Thursday 9th
The Kampala traffic is a wonder to behold. How is it, we ask ourselves, that so many vehicles of almost every kind, can drive so close to each other and not crash? Sometimes even coming the wrong way up a dual carriageway. Much of the driving is extraordinarily skilful in its own way.
Tumblr media
We criss-crossed the city a few times in search of education, hospitalisation, coordination and accommodation.
First stop of the day we were with Mathias, head of the Psychiatric Clinical Officer (PCO) Training School. You met our first graduate this week – Amuron – and we have five more coming through the school to graduate in due course.
This is a strategic education initiative on our part, investing for the future leadership of mental health teams. If you have made a donation to Jamie’s Fund, you are part of this investment, and we thank you.
Sponsors of these young people are important. Mathias and his colleagues like JF because our treasurer John is meticulous in paying the bills. Not all sponsors and families have been able to do that in these times of economic stringency. There are big debts on the books.
Our students are doing well. When they move out to the world of clinical work, they will be key leaders in developing mental health services across Uganda. They are likely to stay in-country as PCO is a local qualification, not recognised elsewhere. The PCOs we already work with are a joy, with their enthusiasm and commitment. We think the group coming through are going to be good too.
Occasionally as we crawl though the city we dip into a mall for a bit of shopping (water, nuts. lunch). On one such foray at the entry checkpoint, the stern looking female security guard approached Ewan and asked “ And, sir, did you cook for your wife last night?” then dissolved into giggles. This week we all celebrated International Women’s Day.
Tumblr media
Boda boda drivers waiting for a passenger or five.
Our ‘hospitalisation’ stop was partly my visit to Dr Juliet, Executive Director of Butabika, the big mental hospital which is the key referral  centre for challenging or difficult-to-diagnose patients (adults and children) with mental illness, personality disorder, intellectual disability, and conditions which may have led to trouble with the law.
We had a good chat – she is always very kind to us. It’s important that we in JF keep up with trends and challenges in the mental health scene in Uganda.
Tumblr media
How many jerry cans can you get on the back of a motor bike? 78 I think.
This year there are undoubtedly more attempted and completed suicides, we hear that from all our partners. JF recently sponsored a workshop on the subject of suicide, which was well received by the delegates.
We are also hearing about a worrying increase in drug abuse using prescribed medicines such as pethidine and tramadol, another strong pain reliever, even in poor rural areas surprisingly. In response to this there are a number of rehabilitation centres springing up around the country. We have no idea about the qualifications and experiences of the proprietors.
As we parted, I mentioned that I am secretly very fond of the old asylums in UK because I learnt so much from my time there as a young trainee and when I was first a consultant.  Dr Juliet suggested I come back as a volunteer consultant at Butabika and spend a month with them. Oh! That would be interesting….
And Dr Juliet’s final comment as I told her there was snow and ice in UK, was “Well, make sure you have some fun in the sun here!”
Tumblr media
Off for some fun in the sun?
Meanwhile Ewan was visiting another, small, hospital, Benedict Medical Centre. Our second graduated PCO is now finding his place there. They are quite near Butabika so many patients go straight to the asylum. The Benedict team are working out how best to serve the mental health needs of a poorer urban sprawl centre population.
The ‘coordination’ aspect of our day was to join Dr Ronald, medical Director of the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau. This body coordinates the work of all the Catholic hospitals in Uganda, providing strategic direction, continuing education (for all staff, not just the clinical people) and representation at national level. We have a high regard for Dr Ronald and his team, and it’s always a pleasure to talk with him. It’s also quite stimulating, too, so talk tends to go on for some time!
JF plans to hold a 4 day Continuing Professional Development workshop for some of our partners in the autumn. The last one, pre- covid in 2019, was very enthusiastically received, some delegates enjoying their first postgraduate training in the ten years after qualifying. They also love getting together.
Where to hold it? Somewhere clean and comfortable with good facilities, appropriate and tasty food, economically priced and near the centre of town. We didn’t get it quite right last time.
Tumblr media
Dr Ronald recommended a Catholic centre run by nuns, and duly sent us off to see it. At the ARU, the Association of the Religious in Uganda, we found Sister Lydia and her colleagues who gave us both a characteristically gracious and cheerful welcome and a conducted tour. We think this centre will suit us very well as the price is also very reasonable for such a central location.
We then wove our way back to the hotel through the traffic. It can take a while.
Tumblr media
Dr Africa seems to offer a variety of services, with the golf course behind.
