im writing a character analysis on Eren Jaeger because he’s genuinely so interesting and beautifully written. should i post it when i finish??

The true freedom that Eren chases and proclaims, is the freedom of Choice.

The whole fucking show is a beautiful catastrophe of what ifs, insane coincidences, and things lining up in the most cruel ways. (eg, Sasha's parents saving Gabi)

Eren was chasing physical freedom yes, but was 'trapped' in the cycle of freedom of choice.

Eren was a slave to his decisions. Walking dead amongst his loved ones for the last two seasons knowing there was nothing he could do to change the future.

Ah, but there was many things they could do, everyone could do, not just him, to change the future. So many people could see the future Eren was leading them down, but their personal beliefs, and their beliefs in Eren, and their love for him, overshadowed any and all rationale. (Even the logical characters such as Hange and Levi throwing everything to the wind in favour of hope amd beliefs and trusting Eren)

Eg. They didn't have to go for Eren in Liberio on the airship. But they chose to. Cause that's their friend. Their comrade. And they believed in him. And would follow him to hell. Did follow him to hell. And Eren knew that.

Eren could've changed his mind at any point if he wanted to after seeing the future, but he made a conscious, or rather a deep soul based decision (whether consciously or unconsciously) that he would guarantee Mikasa's and Armin's safety in the world, even if it means destroying the world and dying and not being able to live with them in that envisioned future after 'saving' them.

HIS CHOICE, was saving his 2 loved ones no matter the cost. No matter whether they agreed with him or not. No matter whether they hated him or not. No matter if the world ended, he died, anyone else died. As long as he ensured they were alive and safe and never needed to pick up a sword themselves or be persecuted again.

Even if it meant forcing their hand, and that they would have to kill him themselves.

As long as they were alive and well. That was His choice.

And thus, he was a slave to freedom. 'Freedom' of 'choice'. And I put this in quotes because really, Eren didn't have a choice. Not really. Not at the point he kissed Historia's hand. Too much had already happened.

And when it came to choosing, Eren would've chosen Mikasa and Armin again and again and again again. So was it really a choice? It came so naturally. So unconsciously. So obviously. There's not a single version of him that would choose otherwise. That would choose a path that would lead to them being killed, dying an unnatural death.

So, did he really have a choice then?

The Attack on Titan anime did better job than the manga:

As a devoted fan of Attack on Titan, both the series and its manga, I must emphatically assert that the anime transcended the source material in certain key aspects. It's not about drastic alterations, but rather the subtle nuances that granted the anime a heightened level of clarity.

In the manga, there were lines that managed to infuriate the readers. Take, for instance, that moment when Armin expressed gratitude to Eren "for being a mass murderer for our sakes." It was a glaring misfit with Armin's genuine sentiments about the Rumbling. However, the anime rectified this by replacing it with the poignant dialogue about their reunion in the afterlife. Notably, the manga seemed less explicit about the fact that Eren "had no choice," leaving room for substantial criticism regarding his actions, his tears for Mikasa, the tragic demise of his mother, and the grim reality of only eliminating 80% of humanity. The anime, on the other hand, masterfully conveyed the inescapable nature of Eren's path, illuminating that no matter how hard he struggled, the outcome remained unchanged. Those like me who harbored disdain for the manga's conclusion primarily had their qualms rooted in the dialogue of that pivotal chapter. It's baffling that the "10 years at least" line persisted, but I digress, for the anime handled this with remarkable finesse.

I won't claim to adore the ending, but neither do I hate it. The anime, through its presentation, managed to mitigate some of the cringe factor, and the music, as always, elevated the emotional depth. It faithfully adhered to the source material, whether we found solace in its culmination or not. It's a testament to the anime's prowess that it took the source material and, for better or worse, enriched the experience.

I can finally reveal this illustration of ATTACK ON TITAN I did in a partnership with @crunchyroll_fr for the release of the dubbed version of the final season of AOT! The event gathered incredible talents with @jacopo_camagni@kelogsloops@nightjarillustration@matttaylordraws and @thomasvonkummant - I'm a big FAN of AOT and I was absolutely over excited they contacted me for this project!
