Have you been aching to get your hot little hands on 52 weeks of data around original posts, likes, reblogs, and searches, all weighted and ranked and tied up into categories with a nice little bow on top? Well, today’s your day! It should come as no surprise that Artists on Tumblr reign supreme: from stunning traditional art, jaw-dropping digital art, fanart, sculptures, textile art—you name it, basically—this year’s list shows that Tumblr truly is the home for art and artists. Thank you, Artists on Tumblr, for enriching our dashboards day after day.

Rounding out the top three, we have two iconic shows: Good Omens is live-action, and The Owl House is animated, but both have a heck of a love story at their core. The second season of Good Omens blessed us with not one but two ineffably exquisite ships, while the final season of The Owl House broke and then healed fans’ hearts in equal measure. Thanks, @danaterrace! Actually, come to think of it, the Good Omens finale kinda did the same in reverse. Thanks to you, too, @neil-gaiman! We can’t wait for season 3.

Speaking of heartbreak and healing, Our Flag Means Death’s second season offered both in droves. The entire cast gave stellar performances, and fans couldn’t have been happier to see the kinds of representation the show displayed. Last year’s #1 topic, Stranger Things, may have dropped a bit, but trust us, you wouldn’t know it from the amount of meta, fanart, and fics in the tag. And did you hear about the live-action adaptations of both The Last of Us and One Piece? They were a preeeetty big deal this year, too. Check ‘em out if you haven’t yet (lol, of course you have). And we’d be remiss not to mention the hugely dedicated fans, fanartists, and fic writers devoting their time to all things Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Y’all deserve a little pizza, as a treat.

2023 was also a year for blockbuster movies, which of course hasn’t escaped anybody’s notice here on Tumblr. Barbie smashed box offices worldwide and left us reeling with every re-watch. How can one describe Greta Gerwig’s pink-filled opus? It certainly is one of the movies of all time. Meanwhile, with its incredible animation and soundtrack, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduced us to a whole new multiverse of Spider-People, opening the portal to a veritable flood of incredible OCs. And then, of course, we got a fresh perspective on an old classic when cinephiles introduced Martin Scorscese’s cinematic masterpiece, Goncharov (1973), to a new generation of film aficionados who resoundingly agree that it is, in fact, the greatest mafia movie ever made. We’re so glad this underrated film finally got the acclaim it has long deserved.

In the realms of gaming and tech, the long-anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 has basically become everyone’s new favorite D&D/dating sim combination. Of course, the Pokémon franchise, games, shows, and Hatsune Miku collabs remain perennial favorites. Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, sorry, we mean of course X, made waves across the internet. Similarly, the Reddit blackout drove Redditors to new venues, and Tumblr users welcomed the folks from r/196 with open arms—we’re huge fans of your memes, y’all, and you fit right in. Welcome, we’re glad you enjoy the chaos. Here’s a fun fact: if we included post metadata in Year in Review rankings, #polls, introduced in January of 2023, would have been the #5 topic on Tumblr this year. Phenomenal.

And, oh right. Taylor Swift had kind of a big year, what with the albums, the epic global tour, and the movie and stuff. Fantastic work, @taylorswift, the Swifties on Tumblr thank you for everything.

You don't even know how many times you have turned in bed, insomnia taking you over like it used to do. The clock on your nightstand reads 11:27 PM, and you sigh, staring at the ceiling. No matter how much you try, sleep evades you like it used to do from the past two years, leaving you alone with your thoughts. Your phone vibrates beside you, the glow of the screen illuminating your dark room. You reach for it and smile at the contact name.

Come outside if you're not sleepy.

Your eyes widen, hesitating for a moment before pushing the covers aside. The cold air nips at your skin as you go to your window, confirming he is actually there. Leehan stands outside your dorm, hands buried deep in the pockets of his hoodie, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

You take your phone back as you click on the "Call" icon, watching how he doesn't wait to answer.

"How come you're awake this late?" you say, watching as he turns his back to you slowly. "Hey! It's bad education turning your back on people."

After you say that, he turns back to his original position, finding you until he does, a small smirk plastered on his face.

"I'm awake by my own will, thank you very much. Also, I know college has been rough on you and how much you love stargazing." After that, your view shifts to the sky, rubbing your eyes. "From your spot there aren't so many, but I know a place where you can see them. So, let's go see the stars?"

You hung up after you said “yes,” put on a hoodie, and quietly snuck out of your dorm with your emergency keys in your pocket in case you came too late. After being fully out of your place, Leehan came close to you with a smile on his face; you took your time analyzing what he was wearing.

His hoodie was slightly oversized as usual, a faded navy blue that looked well-worn, baggy jeans that fit him just right, and sneakers that had the faintest scuff marks. His long brown hair was tousled, and his wrist was wearing a bracelet you gave him when you helped a friend do her Taylor Swift-inspired ones, his being a baby blue color with the number ‘21’ in it.

“You good? Or is insomnia still your enemy?” He asked, tilting his head and cupping yours with his hands; they were a little warm in comparison to the weather. Your eyes closed at the sensation of his thumb caressing your cheek.

"Insomnia, so let's hope the stars can calm me enough to sleep when I come back."

Leehan smiled, tugging you gently by the wrist as the two of you began walking. The campus was eerily quiet, only the distant hum of the city breaking the silence. The two of you walked in comfortable silence until you reached the parking lot. Leehan led you to his car, a slightly beat-up but well-loved sedan, and opened the passenger door for you. “Ladies first.”

“Thank you, Donghyun.” You smiled, sliding into the seat.

The drive was quiet, the roads mostly empty as he took you away from the bright lights of the campus. He glances at you occasionally, the soft glow of the dashboard lights illuminating his face in the dim car, the soft R&B music coming from the radio, and sometimes both of you singing was a good way to spend the time.

After about twenty minutes, he pulled off onto a dirt road, the pavement giving way to gravel. The car jolted slightly as he maneuvered through the bumpy path, finally stopping at an open clearing. When you stepped out, the night air hit you full force, crisp and clean. And above you two, spread across the sky, were thousands of stars, glittering like tiny diamonds.

“Wow,” your breath hitched, fully concentrating on the beautiful sky. The moon was full, shining as bright as the stars. You didn’t realize what Leehan was doing until he stood next to you.

“Wanna eat something?” When he said that, he noticed your confused face, pointing at what he did. A couple blankets were placed on the floor, two bags of snacks and two cans of soda on it, you looked back at him, Leehan was facing down and thanks to the light of the of the moon, you could see a faint blush on his cheeks, the same blush that you had in yours.

“Yes, I would,” you said, both sitting next to each other. Leehan didn’t even make you touch any of the food, opening everything for you. You hug your knees to your chest. “The stars are pretty.”

“Yeah,” he murmurs. “They really are.”

You looked at him; he was already looking at you. The silence stretched between you, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. You have gone out with Leehan plenty of times already; the case was that this felt way more intimate.

Leehan cleared his throat, looking away for a second before grabbing a can of soda and offering it to you. “You know,” he started, his voice a little hesitant, “I like moments like this.”

You took the soda from his hand, fingers brushing slightly. “Me too,” you admitted.

He chuckled softly, shaking his head. “I mean, I like spending time with you. More than I should.” Your heart skipped a beat. Leehan had his gaze fixed on the stars; you could tell that wasn't what he was really focusing on.

For a moment, neither of you spoke. The gentle night breeze rustles through the trees, the distant chirping of crickets filling the silence. Then, cautiously, Leehan reached out, his fingers brushing against yours before intertwining them. It was more of an attentive touch, but that simple action sent warmth spreading through you.

“What are you thinking about, Donghyun?”

“How the moon is always present ever since we have met each other.” You laughed softly.

“How poetic,” you said, and he pushed you tenderly, laughing soon after.

“No, but think about it. The first time we met, it was under the same sky. It was during freshman orientation, remember? You were sitting alone on the campus lawn, sketching something in your notebook. I remember being drawn to you even then, but I didn’t want to pull a move until Jaehyun took a seat next to you, and you barely looked at us." You laughed as you nodded, remembering the moment your friend Jaehyun set you two up.

When Leehan finally got you to talk, you told him you loved the night sky the moment he saw the doodle of the full moon of that night and accidentally let out that it made you feel like you weren’t alone.

Leehan continued. "After that, I kept finding excuses to see you at night—study sessions in the library that conveniently lasted past sunset, late-night walks to clear our heads before exams. Every time, the moon was there.”

Leehan smiled at the memory, his gaze softening as he continued. “Then there was that night when we got caught in the rain after a late study session. You laughed as we ran across campus, completely drenched, and I remember thinking that I’d never seen someone look so beautiful. We sat under the covered pavilion, shivering but laughing, and you told me your dream was to travel the world and see the constellations from different places. That was when I knew I wanted to be part of your journey, in any way I could.”

He exhaled, eyes fixed on yours now. “And then there was the night of the meteor shower. We sneaked out of the dorms, climbed up to the rooftop, and just lay there, watching the sky light up. You fell asleep before it ended, and I remember staying up just to make sure you were warm. I never told you, but that night, I made a wish.”

You tilted your head. “What did you wish for?”

Leehan hesitated, then smiled. “For more nights like that. For more moments with you, with the person that made me learn what it feels like to like someone.”

You felt your breath catch because it felt like the universe had been pulling you together all along. Your eyes met, and for once, neither of you looked away. Slowly, as if testing the waters, Leehan lifted a hand to brush a strand of hair from your face, his fingers lingering against your cheek.

You swallowed hard, your breath uneven. “Leehan…”

“Can I?” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the night breeze.

You didn’t trust yourself to speak, so you simply nodded. That was all the permission he needed.

He leaned in, closing the space between you, his lips brushing against yours in the softest, most reverent way. It was tentative at first, gentle, as if he was afraid you might pull away. But when you didn’t, when you kissed him back with equal tenderness, he deepened it, his hands cradling your face like you were something precious. And to him, you were.

As the kiss broke, you both lingered in the quiet space between breaths. The world seemed to hold its breath with you when Leehan pulled back slightly, his forehead resting against yours, his eyes closed as he steadied his breathing and heart.

“Look,” he began, voice soft yet full of sincerity, “I—"

But the words caught in his throat, and he let out a small, nervous laugh. “I’m not great with words, as you can tell.” He hesitated again, his hands nervously fidgeting with the fabric of the blanket beneath you both. “I’ve been wanting to say something for a while, but… I don’t know if it’ll make sense. But after the kiss, I think you kind of have an idea of what I'm meaning.”

You reached for his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "I think I do," you murmured, your thumb brushing lightly over his knuckles. "But I want to hear it from you."

Leehan inhaled deeply, his fingers tightening around yours; he dropped his gaze to your joined hands, swallowing hard before looking back up at you.

"Sorry, you make this so hard."

Your lips twitched. "I'm just sitting here."

"Exactly." He ran a hand through his hair, eyes flickering between yours and the stars above. "You just—you make me feel things I don't know how to say. I'm usually so good at talking, but with you, I get all… weird."

"Weird?" you teased, tilting your head.

"Yes. Weird. Like, I forget how to be my usual self because all I want to do is impress you, or make you laugh, or just be around you even if we're not saying anything." He exhaled sharply, his free hand clenching into a fist before relaxing. "I guess what I'm trying to say is… I like you. A lot. Probably more than I should. Probably more than I know what to do with."

"Leehan…"

He shook his head, giving you a sheepish grin. "I told myself I wouldn't be a coward about this, but here I am, stumbling over my words." He met your gaze then, all hesitation gone. "I fell for you. And it terrifies me how fast you made me be completely at your mercy."

The vulnerability in his voice made your heart ache in the best way and made you kiss him again. Leehan could feel those butterflies in his stomach that Sungho told him once; he felt warmth in his heart just like Jaehyun and Riwoo mentioned whenever they were with their respective partners and even felt his whole world stop with you being his center of attention, or those were the words said by Taesan and Woonhak.

You broke up the kiss; you had this impulse, and before you knew it, you moved, your hands sliding over his shoulders for balance as you straddled his lap. His hands instinctively found your waist, fingers pressing into the fabric of your shirt as if grounding himself in the reality of you being so close.

Leehan swallowed hard, his eyes darting between yours, searching for any sign of hesitation. But there was none. Only warmth, only you.

"Is this okay?" Your voice was barely above a whisper; he let out a breathless laugh, shaking his head as if in disbelief.

"You're really asking that after you've completely stolen my ability to think straight?"

You smiled, tilting your head, your fingers absentmindedly tracing the curve of his jaw. "I just want to make sure."

His hands tightened at your waist, thumbs brushing the exposed skin that escaped from your hoodie. "Yeah," he breathed. "More than okay."

Your arms went around his neck while his went behind him to support himself. He just admired you, no second intentions in his gaze, unlike the pose you two were in at the moment.

"Y/N?"

"Yes, Donghyun?"

"Would you be my girlfriend?"

A slow smile spread across your lips as you brushed your fingers through his hair. "I thought you'd never ask," you said as you leaned in just enough that your noses brushed.

Leehan let out a shaky laugh. "So… is that a yes?"

"Of course, it's a yes," you finally said, pressing a soft kiss to the tip of his nose. "I'd love to be your girlfriend, Leehan."

The relief that washed over his face was immediate. His arms wrapped around you in a tight embrace, pulling you impossibly closer as he buried his face into the crook of your neck. "You're going to be the death of me, Y/N," he murmured, voice laced with affection.

You laughed, threading your fingers through his hair. “Good thing I’ll be here to keep you alive then.”

Leehan pulled back slightly, just enough to look into your eyes, his expression soft. “Yeah,” he said, smiling, “I think I could get used to that.”

And with that, he kissed you again—this time with no hesitation, no uncertainty, just the overwhelming joy of knowing that you were his.

Oh no. It’s our 15th anniversary.

Oh god. That’s 1 5 years of your nonsense. Don’t worry—it comes as a surprise to literally all of us that the world continued to do its thing, bringing us to this point.

So, how you been keeping since we celebrated the big one-oh, well, five years ago now?

A bratty teenager at heart, Tumblr has remained the same hellsite you’ve always made it: with your faves, aesthetics, and fandoms, your blogs and sideblogs, your reblog chains and tag conversations. Some of you will have been here for The Dress and the ball pit; some of you know those as lore but only come here for the sexymen and, idk, bees, the bee movie. And you’re all valid.

Throughout February, we’ll be reblogging some of the most iconic reblog chains from our time here with you to @best-of-reblogs. To kick it all off, here is a selection of ~moments~ y’all have manifested. You obviously don’t need us to talk about this—you do that enough among yourselves. But, for heritage purposes, here’s the lowdown anyhow. Don’t mind us while we lurk in the back with the popcorn.

In what became one of the biggest moments on Tumblr in the last five years, Destiel went canon. Many times. In many languages. In memes, on your televisions, on your blogs. For decade-long fans of Supernatural and non-fans with transdimensional cracks in their dashboards, November 5 became A Day in 2020.

In the 15 years since we celebrated our launch, you created 170,926,810 new blogs, made 40,798,681,685 new posts, and liked 75,280,353,933 posts, both old and new. You made each other cringe, celebrated the mundane and the extraordinary with your Fuck Yeah blogs, and shared many cursed things we are unable to utter here.

I feel a Lavender Hazeeeeee...

It's the color of many, many things: an imperial color worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. The color prose of pretentious, overly embellished, excessive, ham-fisted, indulgent, unnecessary writing. It is the color of, uh, Cadbury chocolate. For some, it is a symbol of rarity, royalty, magic, mystery, and piety. For others, it is eroticism, femininity, and seduction. It will be no surprise, then, to learn it was the favorite color of the icon formerly known as Prince. But not just him, Dear Reader, because this most luxurious color, purple, is now that of #taylor swift too. The dashboard's #taylor swift community has erupted following the midnight release of her latest video, Lavender Haze. and we wouldn't want you to miss it.

How to be emo: a guide by an ex emo kid who has absolutely no business making this guide ✨

(actual guide under the cut, there’s a lot of words there)

A short history of emo:

So what actually is an emo kid? The term came into use in the eighties to describe a subset of post-hardcore, called "emotive hardcore", that developed out of the punk subculture in Washington DC with bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace. The music was very emotion-focused and very honest, with singers often spilling their guts to the listeners. Although the exact origin of the word is uncertain, evidence shows that it was coined around 1985. Believe it or not, emo kids in the eighties dressed more like stereotypical nerds than like the emo kids we see in more recent years; sweater vests, bowl cuts, big thick glasses, the whole shebang. It wasn't until the 90's that we began to see emo fashion resemble what it does now, with fringes, skinny jeans, and black hoodies. It was also around this time that the first screamo bands, including but not limited to Page 99, Orchid, and Antioch Arrow, formed. A common misconception is that any music with screaming vocals is screamo, but this is false. Screamo is simply an aggressive subgenre of emotive hardcore. Screamo was often referred to as "skramz" when it first developed. Around the early 2000's, pop punk and emo pop started becoming popular with the emo subculture. Bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, and Paramore had recently formed and the emos loved it. There has been some debate over whether or not these bands actually count as emo. Personally, I believe that their earlier albums (Ex: Take This to Your Grave- Fall Out Boy, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out- Panic! at the Disco, I Gave You My Bullets- My Chemical Romance) have more of an emo sound than more reccent ones, but pop punk might be a better term for them.

The Music

Emo is very much a music based subculture. If you don't listen to the music, you aren't emo. Full stop. Of course, this doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to only emotive hardcore or screamo; if your playlist has both Rites of Spring and Taylor Swift, that doesn't make you a fake emo or a poser. It means you have a broad music taste, which is a good thing (heck, even when I was a little 13-year-old emo kid, I still listened to almost every genre under the sun.) Some genres that are not emo include: - Heavy metal - Deathcore - Indie pop - Any sort of rap (Lil Peep and XXXTENTACION are not emo and too many people keep claiming that they are akdjfhalkfkajhl) - Classic Rock - Anything that isn't emotive harcore or a variant

It might also be a good idea to make accounts for sites like Last.fm or Bandcamp if you're looking to find new music. Or ask around, other emos are generally happy to reccommend music to other people.

Fashion

Ah, good old emo fashion. It still has a special place in my heart. Anyway, emo fashion is generally quite androgynous; some staples are black skinny jeans, black hoodies, band t-shirts, and skater shoes. If you want a feminine twist, pleated skirts and fishnets can spice up an outfit. Anything with spikes or chains works very well too. Chokers are popular, as are fingerless gloves, studded belts, and beanies. If you wear glasses, try wearing square-framed glasses with large rims (think nerd glasses). Stipes, checkerboard, and plaid patterns are well liked, as are edgy symbols or images, such as skulls or knives. Cartoon characters such as Hello Kitty or Invader Zim are popular too, however, this is moreso associated with scene than emo fashion. In terms of alternative styles, emo fashion is generally more toned down than say, goth or scene. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to just wear black. Some other colors you can wear to spice up your outfits are black, red, green, blue, pink, or purple. Since punk, the predecessor to emo, was very DIY, so is emo; don't be afraid to make your own clothing or accessories, or spice up ones you already have. You could try going to the thrift store, buying some cheap clothing, and altering it to fit your own personal tastes. The only real makeup associated with emos is black eyeliner and it doesn't need to be good. Just go ham. Focus on your eyes and leave your lips nude. Otherwise you'll end up looking more goth than emo.

Hair

Hair is quite possiblty the most striking thing about an emo kid. The most common style is cut into choppy layers with a sideswept fringe. Hair is often straightened and dyed black, although this is unnecessary. Some other popular colors are red, blue, purple, and blone (woah crazy, blonde emos are real). To get the large, poofy shape, hair is backcombed and hairsprayed. It's not quite as big and colorful as scene hair, although there's no reason as to why you shouldn't do that as an emo.

Isn't this just (insert alt subculture here)?

As confusing as this can be, emo is not the same as any other alternative subculture. Each one has their own unique history and style. The differences between some popular subcultures are:

Punk

Punk is quite possibly one of the oldest, if not the oldest, alternative subculture. It developed in the UK in the 1970's. Punk bands include artists such as The Sex Pistols, Blag FLags, and The Exploited. The style was often very eccentric, and included things like leather jackets, combat boots, colorful, spiky hair, and a ridiculous amount of accessories. Above all, however, punk was a set of political beliefs, and if one did not follow those beliefs, they were often not considered punk.

Goth

Developed in the UK around the same time as emo, goth is a lot darker and spookier than emo. Some goth bands include Bauhaus, Siouxie and the Banshees, and The Sisters of Mercy. Style is often very out there, and included virtually any sort of black clothing that one could get ahold of, very large, black hair, and extreme makeup.

Scene

Although extremely similar to emo in appearance, scene has very different roots. It developed in the US from the emo subculture. Unlike their emo predecessors, however, scene was much more focused on aesthetics and had no set genre of music that they were associated with. However, some artists that were popular with scene kids were Dot Dot Line, Blood on the Dance Floor, and 3OH!3. Fashion included lots and lots of bright colors, childish accessories, and large, emo-inspired hair.

Grunge The grunge subculture developed in Seattle in the 1980's. Some prevalent grunge artists are Neil Young, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. Many participants in the grunge subculture were working class and fashion was often thrifted and DIYed. It consisted of things like flannels, ripped jeans, and converse.

E-kid While not exactly alternative, I felt like putting it here because it's so often conflated with every other subculture in existence. E-kid fashion developed on TikTok and has no real musical influence. Artists like Lil Peep, Freddie Dredd, and Corpse Husband are popular with e-kids. There seems to be some anime influence in this fashion, as well as inspiration from preexisting subcultures. Black clothing is often worn, as well as chains, spikes, and fishnets. Hair is often cut into bangs and sometimes dyed. Hearts are often drawn on the cheeks.

Common misconceptions

As you probably already know, there's a lot of misconceptions surrounding the emo subculture, so I'd like to clear some things up:

Being emo is in no way, shape, or form about being depressed. If you feel depressed, please recieve help, this is not good.

You're allowed to wear colors other than black. You don't have to, but it is an option

Not all rock music or emotional music is emo and the term isn't subjective. You can't just decide that an artist is emo because they sing about emotional topics, just like you can't just decide that an artist is goth because they wear black. It's ridiculous.

You're not a poser if you have no idea what you're doing. The only thing you can do is your best and as long as you're actively researching the subculture and listening to the music, you can consider yourself emo.

Skinny jeans and a fringe does not a true emo make. Especially if you still live with your parents and your freedom of expression is limited. Don't concern yourself too much with looking the part. I speak from experience when I say it gets stressful.

You don't need to do all of these things to be considered emo. The only necessity is listening to the music. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to conform to a stereotype and just have fun with it. Look for inspiration on google or pinterest. You could even try to stalk old MySpace profiles if you really want to. Just go ham. If I've messed anything up, feel free to correct me (politely), you won't hurt my feelings :) Have fun

My interests tend to fluctuate. I’ll try to keep my current fixations up-to-date in the updates tab I have on desktop, but here are some things you can expect to see pretty consistently around these parts: Marvel (including but not limited to the MCU), Taylor Swift (and other pop music), Formula 1, Neopets, villains and antiheroes from various fandoms, and any combination of the aforementioned.

Inclusionist, pro-media literacy education, anti-fiction policing. Trying not to post too much about these issues, though, for my own peace of mind.

I like to keep my dashboard pretty minimalist, so I usually don’t follow people back. However, if you pop up in my notes frequently, I usually will go check out your blog from time to time. Like I definitely have people I consider honorary mutuals, my brain just doesn’t like having to catch up on everyone at once via dash.

“Why can’t I reblog your post?” I never plan for my posts to blow up, and on the rare occasion that they do, it’s never the ones that I actually want to be reminded of as they demolish my notifs. I have a couple posts that I turned reblogs off of because I was overwhelmed by the notes.

If one such post is one you really want on your blog, but didn’t get a chance to RB, feel free to screenshot or copypaste with credit. You don’t have to ask, the answer will always be yes, but if asking makes you feel better you’re welcome to do so. Hellsite Gazing

In 2021 on Tumblr, we all knew where we were at all times. We kept our hands and legs inside the moving vehicle. That sense of iconic self-awareness led to some fantastic posts throughout the year.

@bluebandana proclaimed that their role on tumblr dot com is to scroll through thousands of posts and only reblog the good ones for you to see like your personal tumblr pasta strainer. Who was your favorite personal pasta strainer of the year? Tell them you love them. According to @hetare-ttk: #watching the same post run by my dash 7 times like a farmer watching a combiner collect the morning crops #sometimes the crop aint good but it’s honest work.

As we stayed cozy on our dashboards, while other sites did their own thing, @zvaigzdelasas reflected on how the growing rift between tumblr culture as practiced on this site & ‘tumblr culture’ as practiced by expats to twitter is a fascinating example of divergent species evolution when like a cliff or river separates groups.

@prisonhannibal smartly observed what would happen if people tried to make Influencer Culture™ happen here: you would literally get eaten alive. @the-emblematic made a helpful explainer post for rookies coming over from Twitter, which included the memorable line: simply being on tumblr negates any clout you may have elsewhere. Taylor Swift uses this app. No one cares. Yes this is a selling point.

Returning to a post from the long-ago year of 2014 in which a user wondered if they’d still be using Tumblr years later, reblogs proclaimed the triumph of Tumblr and established that Tumblr is basically Luigi. And also confirmed that yes, you’re here forever. When @imaverycatgirl expressed concern at opening Tumblr right after closing it, other users confirmed that Tumblr is officially a fridge.

As always, people are being themselves to the utmost. Taking into consideration the warning that one should not base their tumblr presence on the idea that you are necessarily less embarrassing than other people on tumblr, they’re larping as a literary theorist in this affected dark academia type tone mixed in with like stan twitter mannerisms, and affectionately calling each other out for being [insert cringe thing here].

A true scholar might say that some of the best Tumblr posts out there are the ones that are just…about Tumblr. Maybe because nobody outside could possibly understand them. Or perhaps just because when you gaze into the hellsite, the hellsite gazes back at you.

it’s from a lyric in the song 13 beaches by lana del rey, “ can I let go? and let your memory dance in the ballroom of my mind”. this blog is the ballroom of my mind. all the images, quotes, texts, and lyrics are dancing around in my mind.

my color blog, folklorenymph. I reblog vibrant, color edits that I love, but don’t fit my main blog’s soft, pale aesthetic.

RepuTAYtion : A Taylor Swift Album Review

Taylor Swift, a little-known country singer, released her debut single “Tim McGraw” in 2006. Swift dissects her relationship with a senior who she knew would break up with her when he went off to college in this song, which she wrote when she was a freshman in high school. Swift’s intensely confessional songwriting caught the world’s attention for the first time, and we were hooked.

Swift is currently one of the most popular people on the planet, with nine albums, a mantelpiece full of honors, and a career spanning nearly 15 years. Swift started her career as a country-crossover artist, but her style has since expanded to include glossy pure pop and indie-folk; nevertheless, Swift’s beautifully honest lyricism has remained a keystone in her music. Here below is my most favorite Taylor Swift album so far.

Reputation is the sixth studio album by the American Singer/Songwriter, Taylor Swift. Look, the word ‘reputation’ had a meaning. Swift used it to refute a narrative that painted her as vengeful and angry, a portrayal that had been forced on her by the media and intensified by her very public, very long-running feud with Kanye West (which began when he infamously disrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs and has been reignited on a regular basis by the Kardashian-West clan). Snakes were prevalent in the album’s imagery, and the lyrics subtly (and not so subtly) discussed their breakup.

True, Swift was a powerhouse musician who shouldn’t be mixed with, this album was successfully re-called. And while a follow-up to '1989’ will still have big shoes to fill, 'Reputation’ lacked the stone-cold smashers Swift has shown she’s capable of time and time again. Of course, there are a few standout songs (‘Dancing with Our Hands Tied,’ ‘Call It What You Want,’ ‘Delicate’).

Taylor Swift’s sixth album is an aggressive, lascivious display of craftsmanship, but her full embrace of modern pop feels sadly conventional. Reputation opens a darker and heaviest tracks of her career. I love how Taylor portrayed the conniving and evil popstar that the media pictured her.

It’s full of bulletproof hooks and sticky turns of phrase; credibility isn’t the disappointment that seemed likely a month or two ago. Swift has deemphasized the talent at the heart of her genius by submitting to a more traditional style of superstardom. The album comes to a close with “New Year’s Day,” a spare, acoustic coda to an album heavy on synths and computers. It’s a combination of Lisa Loeb and Dashboard Confessional, and she conjures rich scenes with only a few lines: a hotel lobby strewn with party garbage, the quiet back seat of a taxi.

This album is also her first album to be in love, not heartbroken which is a refreshing change in pace. It also sounds nothing like everything else out there right now in mainstream music. And it is one of the most iconic comeback in the music industry. ^_^
