TBR Bingo Finnish!
Tumblr media
It took more than the summer just because I was waiting on some holds, but here I stand, ready to enter the Month of Reading with a new Bingo card! If you want the full list of what I read, that is below the cut. I highly recommend just about every book on it.
My favorite new author surprised me.
Stephen Graham Jones is a Native Author and the book The Only Good Indians is a Native horror story. Now, I don't read horror, which is why this being my favorite surprised me. In fact, this was my first ever horror novel so I can't say how it compares to anyone else popular in the field. I can say that being a Native story it very much has that this is the horror WE would experience feel to it. By this I mean I doubt an author of any other background could capture this story as well. There was an emotional element to it that I can't really put a finger on. Just so well written. I'm going to read his other books when I can get my hands on them.

As I mentioned in this post, I'm changing up how I do my TBR this year! I'm doing four bingo cards with 25 books each, with the plan to read them over three months. I'm still working on recovering from a reading slump, so I don't want to overwhelm myself right off the bat.
I'm super excited to try this method, and I had a lot of fun putting together my TBR for this first quarter!
Tumblr media
I also have a few library loans I want to finish this month:
Marked by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast (for a project)
How to Succeed at Witchcraft by Aislinn Brophy
The Beauty of Darkness by Mary E. Pearson
Here's a full list of the books on my TBR and the prompts they fill for my 2023 Bingo Challenge!
When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey
Dawn by Octavia E. Butler
A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger
Wait for Night by Stephen Graham Jones (Shortest book you own)
Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert (Disability Rep)
Skyhunter by Marie Lu (On your TBR for over a year)
Obie is Man Enough by Schuyler Bailar (Trans author)
Wild Tongues Can't Be Tamed edited by Saraciea J. Fennell (Latinx author)
All American Boys by Jason Reynolds (Banned book)
The Midnight Girls by Alicia Jasinska
The Kinder Poison by Natalie Mae

[id in alt] we've been trying to get reading again in my server and decided to do it the good old fashioned way! if you wanna play too, here you go! we decided that fanfiction ABSOLUTELY counts, and the same story can count for multiple squares if you read in different sessions. if you've been having trouble getting going on books you've been dying to read, maybe you can reward yourself for bingos/a blackout, or even have a little friendly competition or celebration with friends!
what are you reading right now?

Sure!

This was my lovely bingo board! I thought I had some good ones in there, but also didn't make it too easy on myself.
My favorite that I was able to mark off was the 'return of jock!TK' (both him playing basketball and also a mention of him playing little league!) and my least favorite was the 'multiple cowboy hats in one scene' because it turned out to be at Gabriel's fucking funeral. What a way to get a square, am I right? 😅

took a few days of scouting, but I think I have 99.9% of the fics lined up necessary to get a full card bingo on that fluff edition bingo I perused earlier in the week. I wonder if I can read everything I chose in four weeks. Certainly many of the fics are short… and I only put three long fics on the tbr this time 😳

January TBR | Queer Lit, Demonathon
I did want to focus on classics in December and I still want to now. Hopefully with more success this time! The Tale of Sinuhe by an author(s) once known, trans. R.B. Parkinson The Tale of Sinuhe, acclaimed as the masterpiece of Egyptian poetry, tells of a courtier’s adventures after he flees Egypt. I have The Tale of Sinuhe, and Other Ancient Egyptian Poems, 1940-1640 B.C. as translated by…

Read Every Day In October
And so now begins my next challenge. October starts a special challenge for me, as I am raising awareness (and funds) for the American Cancer Society. I am asking my personal friends and family to either read with me and also find sponsors, cheer me on and hold me accountable, or sponsor me as I read. Some people are donating per book I finish, some are donating per hour I read, some are just giving a total at the end. I love doing this because it takes something I love and uses it to make money for a cause close to my heart. I mean, sure rats die of cancer and I want that ended, but both my Star Trek family and my personal family have lost members to cancer. I read for the memory of all of them, to raise awareness and funds in all their names.
This October, I'm using my Genre Bingo card to pick my books from. The goal is to need another card by the end of the month. Will I make it? Fingers crossed.

November TBR
There are two things that I've discovered I love when it comes to To Be Ready lists: Bingo boards and themed lists.
Because I've been in a reading slump for so long, I'm trying not to take on too much at once, so I'm keeping this month's TBR relatively easy. I have some books that I want to finish up from October, and a few that I'm reading for a few posts I'm working on.
I also wanted to make sure I got to read some books in honor of Indigenous People's Heritage Month. (some of these will also be for a post I'm planning!) If anyone has any more book recommendations for Indigenous People's Heritage Month, I would love to hear them! I'm always looking for more book recs!

Full TBR list:
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
Race to the Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes
Deadline by Mira Grant
Blackout by Mira Grant
A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair

It's that time again! Announcing the #readsofawe Readathon 2024!
Tumblr media
FAQ
When is it? Sunset 10/2 to sunset 10/12, from the beginning of Rosh HaShanah to the end of Yom Kippur, also called the Days of Awe (hence the name)
Who can participate? Anyone! Jews, non-Jews, big readers, one-book-a-year types, and anyone in between.
How do I participate?
🍎 Read Jewish books! You don't even have to tell anyone about it :) 📚 Follow the prompts on the bingo card, and post how many squares you fill 🍎 Share your TBR, reviews, and book photos on Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, and/or Twitter with the hashtag #readsofawe
What’s the deal with the bingo board? It’s a fun challenge to encourage people to read widely within Jewish literature! Download or screenshot the board and mark off squares when you get them. Feel free to use one book per square OR mark as many squares as apply to each book! Go for a single square, a bingo, a blackout, or just a random pattern! And don’t forget to post your marked-up board when the readathon is over.
