Prompt idea? Cyrus trips over his shoelaces rushing out the door for work. TJ scolds him a little while he ties his shoe then gives him a sweet kiss goodbye.

The Clock Struck Late

It's one of those days where there are strings of sunlight pouring from the bedroom shutter windows and burnt red and orange leaves tripping in the wind. TJ wakes up early and just lays there, it seems like there is time. All the time in the universe for him to lay there and stare at a mop of dark brown and snow skin. Well until he's staring at flitting brown eyes that shine golden in the light.

"You need to stop staring and get to work before Davidson gets on your back about being late again." Cyrus says, a sleep addled voice cutting the gentle silence in the room.

"Five more minutes, Cy."

Cyrus laughs, brushing a thumb over TJ's eyebrow before peering at the digital clock next to his bed and proceeding to turn white as a sheet. The glow of the morning disappears with the brash movements of Cyrus flailing out of bed.

"Oh my god, why didn't you wake me?! My alarm didn't go off either! Oh shit!"

"What Cy?! What?" TJ gets up quickly too, all signs of hazy sleep out of his eyes.

"I'm going to be late. Tuesday! Breakfast meeting with Mrs. Chantel, my biggest client! She's going through a lot right now, needs a session stat! Ringing any bells, TJ?!!" Cyrus takes a moment to look for his good dress pants-- they are hanging half slipping off a hanger in the closet, he really needs to clean up and soon and it's not helping that TJ, even though working hard not to, was still living his messy single bachelor life even though he was no longer single but still a bachelor (Cyrus was planning on fixing that) -- and slips them on before grabbing his coat jacket. TJ is following him, throwing an apple his way and Cyrus almost doesn't catch it in all his spazzing. He's almost to the door, shoving his feet in his shoes and-

"Cyrus wait--"

But Cyrus is going to slam his face against the door now and Ms. Chantel is going to take one look at the bruise on his nose and cheek and decide she needs to find herself a better, more seasoned therapist than a late, washed up, looks-like-he-got-into-a-bar-fight newly appointed one. But in the last moment, mere inches from the chestnut door, TJ wraps both arms around his waist and pulls him snug against his chest and Cyrus has never felt relief this sweet for getting to have a beautiful quick reflexed human being like TJ Kippen.

TJ sits him down on the ottoman near the door and crouches down to tie the unkempt black shoelaces on Cyrus' dress shoes. He makes quick work of them before looking up at Cyrus. His boyfriend still looks stressed and TJ breathes slowly, in and out, and Cyrus quickly realizes TJ is silently asking him to follow the pattern of his inhales and exhales.

"You're gonna get there on time. I'll drive you there. With the sirens on. Okay?"

Cyrus takes in another calming breath, still following TJ.

"I don't know if that'll make me look good or bad. It'll look like you're either giving me a perp walk or I'm some hotshot." Cyrus laughs, now back to his glowing beautiful self and not a man on the verge of a panic attack.

TJ smiles and pulls him in for a slow kiss, savoring the moment because he knows he won't get to see him until one in the morning.

"Come on, sunshine." TJ tugs him up, intertwining their fingers and grabbing his keys from the hook next to the door.

The morning light follows them like a shadow out the door.

Reality Check Series- Wood and Steel or Foam? The classic manual of Chinese Swordsmanship, the Fundamentals of Wudang Sword Method (武當劍法⼤大要),* records four elements that comprise the “Spirit of Sword Practice (練劍之精神)”. These are- 1. courage 2. internal power 3. speed 4. calm Contemporary practitioners should note that courage (膽⼒) is the first of these. Anyone serious about achieving a high level in this art must pay close attention to cultivating these elements in his or her training. The choice of practice weapons is particularly important when it comes to developing courage. Can one develop courage in situations that do not inspire fear, where one’s actions, one’s errors, have no real consequence? No. Without real danger, there is no real fear. Employing soft, foam padded weapons removes the element of fear that has been an integral part of sword work since there has been sword work. Removing all fear from training not only changes the practice into a sport at best and LARP game at worst, it deprives the student of an important learning opportunity. The opportunity to develop a real sense of calm where one has learned to remain calm in the midst of serious conflict. This is one aspect of training that separates traditional martial arts, like swordsmanship, from sports, including martial sports like fencing or modern kendo. I have great respect for these sports, but the nervous tension of competition is never quite the same as the genuine fear that comes from facing a weapon that can cause real harm. For this reason it essential to the spirit of the art that any serious student train with solid, real weight weapons of wood (as is the Chinese tradition) or steel blunts. In all fairness, it is not sword work if it isn’t practiced with a sword.

灰白色的秋天

出太陽的時候就會心存感激。適合一邊聽Sigur Ros一邊做講義的溫度。

目前為止還蠻喜歡這裡的天氣的，行走在清冷的空氣中總能讓腦袋比較清楚。似乎還不算怕冷，零度左右還可以穿裙子加褲襪，但不是當地妹妹那種透膚絲襪，看到她們就會知道我們是不同的物種。戴手套的人也很少。冬天零下三十度的境界現在還難以想像。地上結霜時，走起來非常滑，要是要趕車上班就是心裡焦急也快不起來。早晨的公車班班擠爆，一被擠進去便開始全身出汗，據說常有小孩被擠到哭，要是遇到有人沒洗澡簡直是地獄。這大概是車上售票員最輕鬆的一個時段，他們只要坐在自己的位子上，旁邊的客人會一個一個接力遞錢過去，沒有人會逃票。到學校八點開始上課時，天才漸漸亮起來。

開始工作以後，若是隔天有特別早的課，前一晚總經常夢到沒有趕上飛機。實際上這只發生過一次，有一次是差一點沒趕上。為了不要再睡得那麼焦慮，索性讓自己有規律的時鐘，每天11點前睡覺，6點前起床。

雖然一週只有7.5小時的課，但備課總要花超過20個小時，十月開始學俄語後更加忙碌了，因而非常需要規律的作息。由於兩所大學都讓我隨便亂教放飛自我的教，所以便用了從台灣帶來的教材，再重新設計成簡體和繁體的上課講義（沒錯！有一班是學正體字的），再加上做上課PPT、出作業、出考題、改作業+錄音檔+考卷，每課都如此，才需要花上那麼多時間。當可以自由選擇的時候，當然想用台灣的教材，裡面有台北、台南、台東，真棒～～～！以前用過的中國教材裡面是不會出現台灣的，偶爾出現一兩次就是台灣省、台灣地區，還要跟學生解釋，而你強調半天，上課沒在聽的人還是老是叫你中國老師，（這樣說起來我第一年用中國教材也花了很多時間在備課，主要都在查在中國到底是怎樣、他們規範的說法是什麼）。雖然選台灣教材讓自己備簡體班的課時變得比較麻煩，可是教起來很開心，上課時我也會兩種用法都教，雖然內心常常很兩難，覺得學生會不會其實不想知道那麼多？要是我學英語的時候，老師總是在說美式英語和英式英語哪裡不一樣，會不會覺得煩？（而且美式和英式的差異好像沒有中文那麼大）不過請學生寫課程回饋的時候才知道多慮了，他們都給很正面的回饋，證明只要了解他們的需求，抓住他們的心，之後塞什麼給他們都是能夠接受的，能尊重你從什麼地方來，你的想法。

校園旁的小教堂

短短兩個月，經歷了一些ㄎㄧㄤ事。在A大學我的班上，有四個妙麗，其他十個差不多都是奈威。妙麗們是今年從別的學校轉來的，因為他們的大學倒・閉・了！！而且她們一二年級讀的是經濟和國際關係，轉來我們學校的翻譯系……。妙麗們本來程度就比其他人好了，學習態度也比較好，真不知道其他人到底有什麼本錢鬼混。最近有三四個奈威慢慢變榮恩了，稍開竅與緩慢進步中，覺得很欣慰。但跩哥馬份還是跩哥馬份（有三個），一個月只出現一兩次，他們一來就是什麼都聽不懂，還要拖累妙麗去教他們。這個學校以前是不當人的（學校要賺錢），學生看起來已懶散成自然。不過今年說不能當人的主任退休了，所以我三不五時會提醒學生，他們若達不到我的要求，期末可能過不了。就在這週，三個馬份居然轉去學德語了！萬歲！他們已經學了一年的中文，還像一張白紙什麼都不會，而轉組等於要從頭開始，而且再一個月就要期末了，我也不知道德語老師（俄國人）是要怎麼教，她居然願意收他們。（有一次路過德語老師的班，只有兩個人來上課）

在B大學，第一堂課就甩門出去長得很跩的女孩，後來又甩了一次。那天我把他們的作文發還，要學生各自練習讀自己的文章，之後讓他們抽撲克牌隨機叫號上台讀。在各自準備的時候，她因為幾乎認不得漢字，所以一個一個查讀音，大家都練完了，她只查了四分之一，結果好死不死抽到她要上台讀，她上去讀到她沒寫拼音的地方以後就讀不下去了，開始顫抖，當下很怕她是不是要揍人了，我請她回家準備，下禮拜再叫她，結果她立馬衝出教室又摔門，留下一陣涼風（因為教室非常小，大家都感受到她出去的那一股強���了），我問其他學生，她上別的課會不會這樣，他們說不會，一個學生說她可能不想學。下課以後我找她來談，她的煙燻妝都糊掉了，她說她出去是不想在全班面前哭，這個班會來上課的人程度都很好，因為他們還有在外面的中心學，只有她跟另一個女生沒有，她上課常常一個句子都說不出來，覺得很挫折。安慰她並告訴她一些讀書方法以後，她目前也緩慢進步中。後來寫課程回饋時，她表示中文課很棒，老師很好，好感人（雖然都跟學生說是不記名回饋可以盡量寫，但其實我認得他們的筆跡）。這個班也超難上，一共14個，會來上課的有8個，兩個A1，其他大概A2-B1，而沒出現過的那幾個，居然就從大二一路學中文到了大四還是白紙一張，因為這裡也不當人。這兩所大學的中文課都是選修課，沒有固定教材和進度規定，俄國、中國、台灣老師輪流教，也沒有任何評鑑，所以接這些班就像拆驚喜包一樣。而考試的時候，這裡的學生也和越南學生一樣，非常喜歡互相幫忙（互看或用氣音），程度好的也很願意把自己的考卷給別人看，怎麼這麼有愛！我只好以暴制暴，跟他們說互看或講話的就出去不准寫。

行政方面，由於明年要辦世足賽，政府要各學校明年提早一個月結束學期，學校先前說可能寒假會縮短或是期末考提前，A大學11月都過一半了才確定期末考和寒假時間，B大學遲遲到現在還沒決定。他們說要給我的教師證從學期初辦到現在也還沒辦好，各種文件還在層層上簽中，（授課聲明、授課時數、健檢報告、設備使用規定-->拜託我用的教室根本沒有設備可言、交代家庭背景的自傳……blablabla）由於那裡管制比較嚴，師生進出都要向警衛出示證明，沒有教師證的我，每次進出都要請學生來帶。這所學校十月份時還說他們打算請我上另一個中文選修班，到現在也是不了了之。

空閑的時間拿來學俄語。我和室友一���上一對二的課，老師是一位慈祥的老太太，用非常傳統的上課方式，語法講解很有系統性，筆記整理得非常整齊，並要求我們用一樣的方式抄寫。跟著她學會覺得很安心，雖然週間我常常覺得壓力很大，因為沒有時間念書寫作業，去上課就會被她唸很懶惰，但上週考完試以後她跟我們說了Молодец (Well done)！從學俄語的過程中��便能反思自己的教學，對初學者來說，一樣的東西重複四五次並不算多（金魚腦啊，過目就忘…），各種題型的作業也很有用，即使上課沒有那些喧賓奪主的多媒體和遊戲也能學得好，老師本身的專業知識才是最重要的，來自老師的壓力也很重要。但最主要的還是學習者本身的心態。（本人就是歐巴桑心態，已經花了錢就是要學好，六點起床唸書也甘願）

從一個充滿燦笑的國家到了一個面無表情的國家，至今還是稍稍無法適應，有時在路上跟學生打招呼，他們的表情也很冷淡，因此總是要提醒自己不要隨便笑。在越南即使兩人無法互相溝通，他們也總會帶著友善的笑容，在這裡真的讀不出他們的情緒，也會讓聽不懂俄語的自己顯得很笨，這也是想學好俄語的原因。這邊幾乎沒見過什麼外國人，大概就是校園裡的一些交換學生，亞洲人應該就只有我們這幾個老師和交換生。同事表示薩馬拉在蘇聯時期是軍事城，負責研發武器跟航太技術，因此90年以前是禁止外國人進入的，現在雖然開放了，外國人依然很少，我在這裡唯一認識的外國人是市場的菜販，他從T開頭的斯坦國家來，當時我沒聽清楚，但不疑有他想著是塔吉克(Tajikistan)。後來才發現離薩馬拉不遠的喀山有韃靼斯坦共和國(Tatarstan)，他們是一個主權國家，可是俄羅斯人都說那裡是俄羅斯，那些人不是外國人，而在俄羅斯裡還有好幾個這樣的共和國，這是我現在還搞不清楚的一團謎。

還有俄羅斯人也不用facebook和we chat，他們有自己的社群網站VK。他們過東正教的聖誕節，是一月七號，除了嚴冬老人還有他的雪孫女。俄國人新年的時候要在紙上寫下新年願望，接著用打火機燒掉，把灰燼倒在酒裡喝光。學生說她有一次在購物中心，看到有人牽著寵物熊去逛街，至今我仍然不知道她是不是在騙我（她很正經地說出這些話）。

好奇妙的國度，我要長的知識還很多。

最後，忙碌之餘可以做一些有的沒的，實在很療癒。
