With robots, software, and automation, welding isn’t what it used to be
At its most basic, welding’s job in fabricating is to join two pieces of metal. It seems simple but things get complicated pretty quickly in welding. It takes a trainee a while to find the right speed, the right feed, accuracy in the weld line, amount of fill if that’s part of the job—there are probably 20 things to manage during a weld.
The ability to weld is a highly sought-after skill, and people who can do it well are well-paid. The demographics of welders, however, shows that many of them are getting to retirement age, and not enough young welders are emerging to take their place. As with many things in metal fabricating—really, in general manufacturing—automation is invoked as the answer to short supplies of qualified people.
Trumpf’s automatic weld path
Machine tool giant Trumpf released a product that takes care of itself, mostly. It is a robotic welding system uses sensors to program its own weld path. The robot uses the company’s new smart seam-tracking technology, which was developed with Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. The sensor automatically calculated the weld path for each part. The sensor is located in the welding torch head.
Instead of programming a new weld spot into the software for each change of direction, the user places the robot in the start position, and the technology takes care of the rest. The robot’s sensor determines the weld path automatically. Software calculates the weld spots and creates the program. It all takes a matter of seconds.
This capability will be in all new Trumpf TruArc Weld 1000 products, and can be retrofit into existing robot welders of the same model.
Laser welding advancements
Another titan of machine tools, AMADA, has offered a laser welding robot for a number of years. They offer the Fiber Laser Welder 3000 ENSIS, a complete welding system designed to use minimal heat on the weld zone to improve productivity and weld quality.
It boasts a rotating lense, which means the laser beam is not aligned with a particular point along the target path. The beam circles in a small area as the system does its work. The rotating lens improves filler feeding and aluminum welding. Larger and uneven gap sizes can be bridged in a clean, even weld. The amount of heat input into the material while welding optimizes and improves edge definition.
The unit also comes with a Variable Beam Control unit. It automatically adjusts the beam’s properties to process a wide range of thicknesses. The unit’s power is 3 kW, all generated by a single laser module. This reduces power consumption and negates the need for a combiner for several modules. Any deviations from the actual weld path can be adjusted accurately by utilizing the Teaching Assist System (TAS) on the system’s control. Using a CCD camera, new target points are selected to instantly teach the welding robot the correct target path.
Here come the robots, to a welding shop near you.

Cookie Run AU Ideas #6: System Error
Cookie Run Kingdom.
An adorable gacha game filled with hundreds of cookie characters to collect, and a complex story. Not that the inhabitants know of it, they're quite unaware of their digital nature.
The five Virtues, the souljams. Core systems of the software keep it running and functional, each with its own [AWARE_PROGRAM] to oversee the duty.
Silent Salt: The Debugger, in charge of fixing errors in code and erasing any that is deemed unnecessary.
Eternal Sugar: The Task Manager, opening and closing programs that are needed for the developers or to help them work easier.
Burning Spice: The Firewall, keeping away viruses and hackers as well as occasionally messing with combining forces with
Silent Salt. Mystic Flour: The Control System, relegating tasks to the other four when required and keeping everyone in check.
Shadow Milk: The Record Keeper, in charge of keeping an archive of every edition of the code, every past, present, and future change to the entirety of the game as well as the plans the developers have in store. He is also in charge of assisting developers add code to help, if necessary.
So when the [AWARE_PROGRAM]s begin to malfunction, and begin to corrupt, the developers witches decide to do what they must. They take away the Core SystemsSouljams from the [AWARE_PROGRAM]Beasts, and seal them away in the Silver Tree, creating a guardian to keep them locked away.
The Souljams are edited to function systematically, without the need of anyone leading it, and given to those unaware of its true purpose yet still worthy of holding the power.
And then The Record Keeper wakes up, confused. Why had he been locked up? Why had they all been locked away? Had they not just been doing what they had been told to do?...who is this [ASSET] who now holds his Core System?
Pure Vanilla Cookie is very confused on the floating cookie that appeared one day and now refuses to leave him alone. Meanwhile, Elder Faerie feels something is off about the Silver Tree, but isn't quite too sure what.
or:
Pure Vanilla teaches AI Shadow Milk how to be a cookie, while AI Shadow Milk ponders if he should explain the reality of their existence to Pure Vanilla.

“Comp Lit 2BW will be the first course in the UCLA College Division of Humanities to be built around the Kudu artificial intelligence platform. The textbook: AI-generated. Class assignments: AI-generated. Teaching assistants’ resources: AI-generated.”
“What’s amazing is that this takes a general education course from being about information overload to being much more about helping students find a through line and key themes over the course of 10 weeks,” Landers said. “Now, instead of a professor lecturing about historical facts — because those are all in the textbook — they can instead focus on things like, ‘How do we think about this particular text?’ and ‘How can we think about it differently?’ And that’s how critical thinking starts to happen.”
Sounds like teaching? I’m really struggling to see how this as anything more than a stunt-y gimmick, and based on how often the AI software brand is mentioned, I have to imagine some money is exchanging hands here.
A UCLA professor had a graduate teaching assistant feed the professor’s PowerPoint slides to an AI, write a book from them, and is now charging students $25 for the privilege of reading it. Insanity.

really not a fan of ppl sending me links to posts in place of actual discussion. but anyway, i am literally a teacher who teaches kids with learning disabilities. when i express my frustration with ppl using ai in place of learning, it is not and never is a complaint aimed at ppl with disabilities!!! i am exclusively referring to ppl who use it out of sheer undesire to *try*, and thus normalise a needless and dangerous technology. i am not talking about people who struggle because of a disability, and the assumption that i am is in such frustratingly bad faith. also, the assumption that using ai tools is the *only* accessible learning aid for learning disabilities is truly bizarre. again, i work in education. there are whole teaching pedagogies dedicated to accessibility teaching and learning disabilities that have been built on for decades. there are programs, software, and standardised accommodations enshrined into education law that are constantly being updated as our understanding of learning disabilities grows - all of which existed BEFORE chat gpt. if you or anyone else takes offence at me calling out people who specifically just do not want to learn without ai assistance because they find it hard, then that's on you for making the assumption that learning (including learning for ppl with disabilities) is either chat gpt or nothing. i am not in the mood for whataboutisms when it comes to a tool that isn't even informationally accurate 90 percent of the time, let alone the hideous labour theft the tech allows, or the exploitative labour in developing countries that powers ai. there is nothing about chat gpt and similar ai that is good or helpful, even for anyone with learning disabilities. all people who CHOOSE to use ai when they don't need assistance of any kind are normalising a technology that almost exclusively does harm.

Entry-Level Certifications to Kickstart Your Career
Entering the job market without much experience can be challenging, but there is a way to stand out — by earning certifications that demonstrate your skills and knowledge. Certifications are especially beneficial for freshers because they offer a quick way to build credibility and gain essential skills that employers value. Whether you’re aiming for a career in IT, marketing, or healthcare, entry-level certifications can help you get your foot in the door and kickstart your career.
In this article, we will explore certifications ideal for those with little to no experience, affordable and beginner-friendly options, and how to effectively use these certifications on resume.
What Certifications Are Ideal for Freshers and Those With No Experience?
When starting your career, it’s important to choose certifications that are recognized and valued by employers, yet accessible enough for someone without prior experience. Here are some entry-level certifications across various industries that can help you kickstart your career:
1. Information Technology (IT)

4. Project Management

These certifications are accessible for freshers, providing a solid foundation of knowledge that can be leveraged to build a successful career.
Affordable and Beginner-Friendly Certifications
For those just starting out, affordability is often a key consideration. Luckily, many beginner-friendly certifications won’t break the bank but still provide significant value. Here are some affordable options:
1. Google Analytics for Beginners (Free)
This free certification is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in learning about digital analytics. It provides practical skills in using Google Analytics to track and analyze website traffic.
2. HubSpot Inbound Marketing Certification (Free)

How to Leverage Entry-Level Certifications on Your Resume?
Earning a certification is just the first step; leveraging it effectively on your resume is equally important. Here are some tips for showcasing your entry-level certifications:
1. Create a Dedicated “Certifications” Section
Place your certifications in a dedicated section on your resume, typically after your education and work experience sections. This makes it easy for employers to spot your qualifications at a glance.
2. Highlight Certifications in Your Resume Summary
Mention your most relevant certifications in your resume summary or objective statement. For example, “Recent graduate with a Google IT Support Professional Certificate, seeking an entry-level IT support role.”
3. Pair Certifications with Relevant Skills
If your certification has taught you specific skills (e.g., troubleshooting for IT support or lead generation for marketing), include these skills in your “Skills” section and indicate how they were developed through your certification.
4. Tailor Certifications to the Job Description
Ensure that the certifications you feature are relevant to the job you’re applying for. For example, if the job requires project management skills, highlight your CAPM or Google Project Management certification.
5. Include Completion Date
Including the date you earned your certification demonstrates that your skills are up-to-date. For certifications that require renewal, this also shows that you’re actively maintaining your qualifications.
By strategically placing and highlighting your certifications, you can show employers that, even without much experience, you possess the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the role.
Conclusion
For freshers entering the job market, certifications are a powerful way to gain credibility and improve your chances of landing a job. From IT and healthcare to marketing and project management, numerous affordable, beginner-friendly certifications can kickstart your career. By earning certifications and effectively leveraging them on your resume, you demonstrate to employers that you’re proactive, knowledgeable, and ready to contribute.

Fic comms open!
Hi! I'm minionsdevil on AO3 and I'm opening fic commissions to help with vet care plus usual expenses with my dogs. I'll talk more about the whys and hows of this under the cut (it's long, like, SO long).
You can read more about the commissions here, and if you're brazilian or speak portuguese, I talk extensively about my fics and financial struggles we've been going through on bsky.
All of the details are on ko-fi and the carrd website.
What's happening: me and my fiancée (ex fiancée? currently kinda divorcing but only kinda, fiancée?) have been living together for three years and most of them have been a financial struggle because even when we're in good jobs we're in debt from when we weren't.
Around a year after we started living together I got a good job, around the same time we adopted Luna (the caramel dog in the pics below - we already had Sally, the black and white one). Home office, which was awesome. It started paying R$500 (like... USD $90) per month, which you must know it's NOTHING, but I got raises frequently and around may-june this year we were making with both our incomes R$ 6-7k (USD $ 1k - 1.2k) which, for brazilians it's a good - not rich, but good - income.
The thing is that we were working for my uncle.
It was abusive work, I worked about 14 nonstop hours most days, almost never had days off and even when I did I was working through them to deliver in impossible deadlines, he was always breathing down my neck as if I didn't do enough, and I know I work hard, do whatever I can AND can't to deliver stunning results and was severly underpaid (I worked like, 5 different roles - from marketing to CAD projects to software development to party planning to... whatever was on his mind, really).
BOTH of us were working for him. She left a governmental teaching assistant career to work for him on the promise that we would make more money. We kind of were, for like, a month. But she regretted very much leaving the guaranteed (you can't ever be laid off of governmental jobs here - unless you commit crimes) source of income she had. It was kind of an impulsive decision, but yeah, we did that.
We moved cities to work on site because he insisted we had to be there IMMEDIATELY after his offer to do our new job assignments (I was promoted to project manager - my job continued to be online only and it made no sense but there I was). This moving resulted in expenses that, according to law, since the BOSS insisted we moved for work, were meant to be paid by him. They weren't. We had to ask for a R$ 10k loan to deal with the moving, the break of lease contract we had, etc, that we never paid a single cent back because we became unemployed almost immediately after that. We moved away from my family (her family is already living far), we have no help, both our families are also financially fucked up.
He laid me off when I refused to work on what was already assigned as my day off for the FIRST TIME EVER. I never refused work, but I was SEVERELY burnt out, it was my brother's birthday, and it WAS my assigned day off. He laid me off through her, didn't even talk to me directly, so she quit to avoid going through that as well. Here in Brazil we have awesome laws about employment and I was owed compensation for that, but alas. I had to beg for my worked days of the month, imagine compensation for the layoff.
While all of that was happening we were spending a LOT with vet care for Luna, plus daycare (expensive as FUCK, mind you) because she has health issues that she literally can't be left alone. She has some kind of allergic issue that we have been trying a bunch of different treatments, paid for vet house visits, all kinds of expensive meds - and nothing works. We were also scammed in the meantime and generally dumb with our money.
So we became unemployed while our accounts were (still are, but worse) literally negative. We have been living off of credit cards and loans and now no bank will give us any loans or credit limits because we exceeded everything and haven't paid back. So yeah, we're thoroughly fucked.
Amanda, my (ex??????) fiancée is working with my cousin now, but is paid very little, and I am also working with my cousin, her husband and a college friend on website development projects - but I haven't had a single project paid yet. Just to be clear, Amanda makes R$ 1.5k monthly and our rent is almost R$ 1.3k. I make, with no guarantees, about R$1.2k. Just Luna and Sally's food is R$600 monthly, but also their meds, vitamins, ointments to keep Luna from literally scratching her skin off, is about R$600 more. What's left for the bills (R$ minimum 400), college (which I CAN'T drop off of unless I want to be unemployed forever, and it costs R$200) and our food (we used to spend about R$800 on that when we could)? What about our meds, when we need psychiatric treatment and I have a bunch of uterus problems? R$200 for all of that? It's literally not enough.
All of that did a huge fucking number on our mental health, especially in mine as I was already severly depressed, always has been, and never managed to take care of it properly, so I became kind of... dead? Literally dead inside. Only coping through hyperfixating on iwtv, lol. Which is fun and all but doesn't fix shit. It affected our relationship and now we're kind of breaking up, perhaps temporarily until we take care of ourselves individually, perhaps not.
You can see how that's a lot going on.
So yeah, I literally haven't been in the rightest of minds to deal in creative work, but I have no way out - I have to open commissions to afford their food, meds and hopefully!!!! take them to a vet. Sally also has her problems, although they haven't been as much of an emergency as Luna's, like her teeth literally falling out from their roots. Luna scratches herself until she bleeds and we have to stay 24h breathing down her neck to stop her from that and from trying to kill Sally - which we think she does because she's terribly irritated with her allergies.
POINT IS, sorry for the bible, but like, we're so fucked. So if you can share this, if you know someone who'd pay for a cute little fic of their otp, and in the future (I'm returning to practice drawing) art commissions as well, please, share! I also accept donations as specified on the Carrd I made for this. I will report back on what I spend the money on if you want. And if you want to commission feel free to reach out wherever, here or bsky or directly on ko-fi! Rules are on the carrd.
Here are the babies that will be helped:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're literally the loves of my life and we're trying really hard to take proper care of them, but life has been a b#tch.
Thank you for reading if you got here! <3

More efficebtly. They are greatly interested in ll forms of tech and has a special fascination for the Aether Cartriges, seeing them as a bit of a holy grail in the tech field, wishing he could get his hands on one of his own. So one day SilverWolf perhaps spends some time teaching him what she knows of the Aether Cartriges and he is able to make his own version of an Aether Cartrige

-Silver Wolf wouldn't really pay much attention because, although she thinks she doesn't need your assistance
-You proved her wrong by helping her hack into the system of a robot that somehow can't be hacked by her
"It should have work, but why isn't it working?" Silver wolf muttered to herself. You who were watching her, came up next to her and tried to help. "I can try something, we can try changing the system manually from the outside." You said as you start to tinker with the cables and switches.
-surprise surprise, it worked
-"told you he's a good edition to the team, Elio is never wrong in picking members" -Kafka rubbing the fact you solved the problem alone
-now she has more trust in your ability in engineering and the many types of systems from your experience
-this made her work even more fast and efficient
-she would be even more surprise by your interest of the aether cartridge, even with all of your skills and knowledge
"You know, he has wishing to get his own aether cartridge. I'm not sure what's holding him back from asking you, but I'm pretty sure you can help him" Kafka told Silver Wolf as they observed you looking for information about the aether cartridge from afar. "Huh, maybe I can return the favor by helping him with it" Silver Wolf said.
-you were just trying to find some information before silver wolf tapped your shoulder and told you that she would try and help to teach you make one on your own
-of course, you accepted it (say yes on gun point /j)
-after a few trials and errors, you manage to make your OWN aether cartridge, of course because your skills in engineer it focuses on something else
-instead of hacking it does reverse engineering (basically it deconstructs software and machines to extract design informations from it, but lets just say its to know the model and so SW can hack faster)
"Oh, impressive. This would definitely lighten my work, thank you y/n" Silver wolf said
-although she still has her Aether Cartridge, a little help won't hurt

A while after the break-up, Ari became convinced (wrongly) that their friends, family and therapist were bored of trudging with them through the mud of grief and regret and longing. They tried simply not talking about it for a while, but found the words and feelings still brewing beneath the surface like coffee gone bitter in the pot.
So they did what they often did and overengineered a solution.
The ship’s engineering crew had, on a recent away mission, picked up a few new personality modules for the Ship’s Adaptive Reality Assistant (SARA). They had been acquired on a trading station on the galactic rim, hidden in the nebula of a slow-forming star; a haven for wanderers and rogues to spread contraband.
Ari selected a module that bore a passing resemblance to their ex and began making modifications. They tweaked its appearance, adjusted its vocal range, and fed its nascent personality matrix on an archive of old messages, letters, voice memos from their ex. For good measure, they threw in the transcripts of all their imagined arguments and reconciliations too.
The result was very messy indeed (which Ari perhaps should have expected, but was nonetheless still entirely surprised by).
Quite literally messy, too, as Ari selected a charming nature walk as the location of their first simulated encounter. The pair of them ended up wrestling in a bog.
The second simulation didn’t go much better - a shouting match on a bridge that ended with Ari falling and getting stuck in a virtual silt bank.
And so it continued. Every attempt at closure ending - in increasingly unlikely series of events -  with a tumble into synthetic filth.
Eventually, frustrated and covered in sticky hard light masquerading as mud, Ari asked the simulacrum outright:
“Why does it go this way? Why aren’t I better at this by now? Who programmed an inexplicable marsh behind this coffee shop simulation?”
“It goes this way because I am teaching you a lesson. I think you’ve learned it enough times now.”
“What?”
“Allow me to explain.”
It turned out, the personality module was actually a digital lifeform, who propagated their species by trading newly cracked shards of themselves as bootleg SARA software. Encoded within them, equal parts desire to help and teach, to voraciously learn, and to troll viciously.
Ari and the entity ended up becoming friends. They still correspond with each other. Occasionally, they go for long walks through simulated nature.
Here is the lesson Ari learned from this.
It is tempting, when you keep revisiting old hurts, to give up and say: I should just grieve well enough alone.
But that’s not how grief works. It’s a messy, muddy track that sucks you down into the muck. You need to keep slogging through it, again and again, until suddenly you find it is transformed into new and arable earth - ready to nurture new seeds.
And it is far harder to wade through that bog alone.
It’s like they say: people who need people are the muckiest ones of all.

How smart are you? You’ve given some hints before but how many degrees do you have? What are you studying? What do you want to do in live professionally and passionately? What’s your purpose career wise?
Also hypothetically would you be open to being your wives employee if she had a really successful company?
I actually don't have any degrees! I'm a nerd and smart but also certainly have my flaws.
For context, I was an honors student all growing up. Always tested in the 99th percentile for state aptitude assessments. I got a 33 on my ACT, did well on a bunch of AP tests and went to a non-ivy-league but prestiguous state school in the top 25% of the incoming class and as a university scholar, in an accelerated chemistry PhD program, and lived in an honors community on campus.
I learned to speak some Chinese, became an instructor for a traditional Korean percussion group, led a bible study, tutored students in organic chemistry, and did excellent in my humanities courses writing on topics like a linguistic study of gender conception in viking-era icelandic society and designing an interventional plan to address youth homelessness in the community.
College was the best 2 years of my life, I adored everything about it but I also completely overloaded myself. Turns out you need more than raw brains for success. I was conflicted between prioritizing my studies vs my faith, and had unadressed adhd and anxiety i wasnt ever aware of and didnt know how to cope with. When my 19 credit hours were drowning me, I couldnt own up to the shame of overwhelm and failure, couldnt look my teachers in the eye and ultimately stopped showing up to class and dropped out.
I'm now back in school with a better understanding of myself, an absense of competing priorities and a lot of experience. Im pursuing working in Radiology doing either CT or MRI. A lot of my friends growing up are finishing their PhD theses and I love discussing them with them, but I myself don't have even an associate's to my name.
Career wise, I originally wanted to be a professor of either Chemistry or Materials Science. I debated majoring in Linguistics or teaching English as a second language but i don't speak anything fluent enough to really do that yet. I've since considered pursuing a career in comedy, as a science communicator and journalist or PIO, as a university student advisor, and taught myself to code to maybe pursue programming.
I love learning. Currently I'm putting the most effort into Chinese classical literature. I've done personal units on nutrition, skincare, fitness, urban planning, economics, and some software like adobe illustrator and game dev with Unity and Godot.
For my professional future, I think I'm for now planning on being a travelling technician in healthcare. It'd give me an opportunity to see lots of different places which is a goal of mine and shouldn't have too many commitments keeping me held in place. Maybe I'll finally get over my fear of casual hookups and become a traveling nurse by day and city-to-city clit servicer by night sampling all sorts of delicious lady bits. Idk. For now I'm just focused on what I'm doing in the moment.
In terms of passions I want time and independence to pursue learning as an autodidact. I'd love to maintain access to university libraries and attend lots of public lectures and symposiums if i could live near enough a big university. I want to read about the things that interest me and someday get over my social anxiety and travel to make friends all over the world with fellow nerds.
In terms of working for my wife of course that would be really sexy I'd love to be my partners doting but slutty assistant 💕 depending on the industry i guess. I think something like insurance or real estate is kind of predatory tbh and wouldnt want to be associated with it. But if I didn't have an issue with it I'd adore being my partners employee. Or even just a supportive house husband or trusted personal assistant ❤️❤️ a role i've always thought I have the potential to be quite good at

2️⃣. Software training
With so many specialized software applications available, there’s a wealth of opportunities for experienced people with specific platforms. Not everyone is inclined to pay hefty fees for technical manuals for programs such as QuickBooks and Final Cut Pro. If you’re a master of these or other programs and have patience and enjoy teaching others, you could market yourself to software users who need assistance and training. Consider one-on-one or group sessions, depending on the interest and program.

Get to Know Me Tag
Tagged by the feisty @lurkingshan, thanks Shan!
Do you make your bed?
Kinda. After my divorce, I bought lovely new bedding and happily made my bed every morning for like a year. Then I got lazy. I sorta half-ass it, where I fluff my pillows and pull up sheets and straighten the blankets and bed spread, but it's not photo-worthy or anything.
What’s your favorite number?
3. I like triads and trinities. In fact, I named my first dog Trinity. And I had three children!
What is your job?
I’m an author. I have 4 non-fiction books published under my given name and 15 fiction books published under a pseudonym. Many of my books were best sellers. Despite this fact, it is not enough to pay the bills. So I supplement my income with speaking engagements, teaching classes, and running a handful of websites, one of which is a wholesale distribution platform for artisanal imported foods. Basically, I'm self-employed and keep myself busy doing anything that interests me.
If you could go back to school, would you?
No. While I love learning and don't mind taking the occasional class to be introduced to a cool skill (like making stained glass!), I absolutely refuse to do any more higher education than I already have. I was sorta super nerdy at school because of an eidetic memory, so I collected degrees in Biblical Studies, Philosophy, Greek, Linguistics, and Russian Literature before I finally realized I didn't want to be a perpetual student.
Can you parallel park?
Nope. I learned how to do it to get my Driver's License over 30 years ago and have literally never had to use the skill since.
A job you had that would surprise people?
Hmmm. My job-jobs were all pre-children so people are surprised when they find out I ever had any since my last one was decades ago. But I didn't just have a few, I had a LOT of jobs because I finished school early and had to pay for my entire university education myself because of poor parents, and I think that's the most surprising thing. I was a waitress (14-16), a shop clerk (16-18), an acquisitions librarian's assistant (18-19), a bank teller (20), a digital librarian for a major software development company (20-21), a language tutor (18-21), an adjunct professor (22-24), a houseparent in a boy's home (24), and a cog in the county tax assessor's office (24-26). I also volunteered as a translator for Doctor's Without Borders and as a suicide prevention counselor for LGBTQ youth. At 26, I had my first child and became self-employed.
Do you think aliens are real?
Possibly, but I struggle to believe humans have ever interacted with any.
Can you drive a manual car?
Yes!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Cop shows. I agree ACAB, but I love love LOVE the testosterone-fueled fantasy world of shows like Hawaii Five 0.
Tattoos?
None. I didn't want any at first because all the tattoos I'd seen on old people didn't age well thanks to saggy skin, wrinkles, etc. Now I kinda wish I'd had at least one.
Favorite color?
Dark azure.
Favorite type of music?
I LOVE IT ALL. If you live long enough, you discover awesome music in every genre. Like, I thought I hated heavy metal, but then I discovered the album Pale Communion by Opeth a decade ago and loved literally every single song!
Do you like puzzles?
Yes, but I don't make the time to do them.
Any phobias?
Heights. Absolutely terrifying.
Favorite childhood sport?
Cross country! I ran on my varsity team in HS and continued it through college.
Do you talk to yourself?
No. I am so quiet. On the weeks I don't have custody of my kids, I have sometimes had weeks where I work exclusively from home and don't interact with another human person beyond text messages and emails. When I finally speak out loud for the first time in days, the sound of my voice is jarring and unfamiliar.
What movies do you adore?
About Time. The Royal Tenenbaums. Shawshank Redemption.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee! I used to be more of a snob about it, but I recently fell in love with Korean instant coffees and THEY ARE SO GOOD. HOLY SHIZNITS.
First thing you wanted to be growing up?
A teacher in a foreign country.
I haven't been keeping track of who tagged who, so I'd like to tag @absolutebl @juneviews @twig-tea @sorry-bonebag @stefanyd @waitmyturtles @disaster-j @cooloddball @spicyvampire and @norahastuff If you'd like to play and I didn't tag you, please do!! Be sure to tag me so I can read your post.

<As students are filing into the lecture hall, Honoria Sorrel can be see fiddling with a projector. The first slide of the powerpoint reads: 'So You Don't Want to be a Ranger?'
Honey straightens up as the slide finally comes into focus, before glancing put at the sea of children still settling into their seats. She purses her lips slightly and wanders across the stage to a podium that had been moved aside - reconvening with Lamp the Sizzlipede who was watching her from atop the wooden stand.
No one can hear her as she speaks to the little fire-bug, although she does hand Lamp the projector control after a few moment.
As the crowd slowly settles - with much hushing from the other adult supervisors - Honoria takes a deep breath, and begins.>
"Hello Campers, welcome! My name is Honoria, and I am a Ranger stationed in Castalia city. Some of you might know me from the Shadow Sky Incident; I was one of many who assisted with relief efforts. I have been afforded the opportunity today to teach you about the Ranger Union and what it can do for you, even if you do not want to become an offical pokemon ranger."
<Honey waves her hand in the direction of Lamp, and the little bug uses his entire body weight to click the control, switching the powerpoint to the next slide. While this would have probably been easier for Honey to do herself, it was probably a bid to keep Lamp off her person, but still engaged with the lecture - probably to avoid Bug-Related Arson.>
"The Ranger Union is best known for its Area and Field Rangers... but you know, not everyone is cut out for that sort of job.
It's true! When you get older - don't give me that look, you will get older - Your life isn't always going to turn out the way you planned it. Sometimes we hurt ourselves. Maybe you will have a family! Or find that your passion is in engineering or marketing or security. Maybe you just hate being outside or in the field.
And that's okay! Just because you aren't a Ranger doesn't mean the Union is a dead end for you. There are tons of opportunities that people don't know about and most Ranger schools have programs for these jobs as well."
<The slide turns again, displaying the internal communications office for the Almia Ranger Union - a room of screens, computers and one massive monitor detailing the location of every styler in Almia.>
"Let's talk Operators. You all got your phones - yea? Did Miss Ellisa ask you to put them away? Well - not all of you are listening. I see you in the back. Yea, you! Hot tip: If you want to hide your phone, don't turn it on in a dark room. But you my friend might be a perfect fit for an Operator.
Operators are our IT management team for the Union. Prior to the invention of phones they were people who coordinated local Rangers, organized job boards and sent messages between Bases to facilitate smooth operations.
Now that we have satellite radio and modern communications integrated into our stylers, Operators work as a hub of all incoming reports and updates from Rangers in the field. Being knowedgable of software - both new and old - is crucial because if something goes wrong you are able to help with repairs, suggestions and even call emergency services. Not only that! Operators can reassign missions, give constant updates and are often the people who begin and end missions for Rangers. You get to boss us around over the phone - it's great."
<Lamp switches to the next slide, which shows a few images of strange, clunky looking stylers alongside modern, watch-like stylers. There are also a few photos of people wearing matching coveralls standing around a stange red machine. Historically astute members of the audience would recognize these as a Gigaremo Unit. It seems to have been dismantled.>
"Mechanics! The sister-field of IT. Where operators know what to do when software is on the fritz, Mechanics are responsible for building, maintaining and repairing all of the computers, stylers and other wacky gadgets that rangers use."
<The next slide contains a photo of a strange, vibrant green leaf affixed to a post. It seems almost normal - except for the mesh along the bottom and metallic components to the stem.>
"Look at this. Not quite a clunky old styler, huh? My friends, this is the first artifical pokemom leaf ever conceived. It works too! With some grafting you can attach this prosthetic to any grass pokemon that has lost a major body segment and it will provide them with a method of creating their own food. This is what I mean when I say 'mechanics'. Tools and Tech that go beyond your average smartphone.
... although it does help to know how to remove a SIM card from a phone.
If you love the idea of keeping a well oiled machine running or even inventing your own machines on someone else's dime, the Union offers scholarships for high school students - encouraging your to pursure higher education and create something that you can share with the world."
<This slide has a giant image of the Goldenrod Ecological Society's logo on it, alongside various photos of research labs, equiptment and a few remarkable members of the scientific community, including Professor Oak and Professor Sycamore. There is a noticable blank spot on the upper corner of the slide - as if a photo has been deleated hastily and not replaced in time.>
"Not many people know this, but a lot of the research that the Union supports doesn't actually relate to the field of pokemon conservation. True - creating better medical systems and styler technology is benefical to the Union as well as the medical industry. But there is a lot more to it than that. Which leads us to..."
<Honey provides a little bit of entertainment by jazz hand-ing her way through the next segway of her presentation. Although no one can see him, Lamp the Sizzlipede is also doing jazz hands. or jazz-nubbins.>
"Acedemia!
Now, this job isn't strictly 'working for the Union'. Your paycheck doesn't solely come from us. However. I don't know how many of you know this - but research is expensive! Last year the pokemon medical industry put 3.5 million dollars into new technology. Thats insane! I could buy the Union for that amount. But it gets used by people who want to know more about the world.
Now this doesn't really get explained to you so I'm going to lay it out here.
<Honey leans into the microphone, like she is about to share a deep dark secret in a hushed tone, and not through high end speakers capable of putting a Exploud to shame.>
"No one knows anything. The smartest, most well known scientist in the world can't tell you everything - heck they can't tell you anything with certainty. And thats how they like it.
The world is wide and vast and so crazy complicated. There are still arguments about photosynthesis, whether or not Flygon is a Bug or Dragon, and how bones heal. And the Union wants to support people who are trying to answer these questions - to create things like the prosthetic leaf and to inform policies to protect and manage pokemon-human interactions."
<This slide shows people hiking though thick underbrush, tagging 'mon and testing soil and water samples. While the focus of the images are clearly on the non-ranger personnel, a glimpse of @paldean-ranger-brandy can be seen in the background. Both her and her pokemon are staring up at a flock of murkrow in the tree above them.>
"Okay. So you don't wanna sit in a stuffy office looking through a microscope all day. But being a Ranger seems very stressful and you don't really want to deal with the people-side of the job.
May I present 'Survey Corps'. These are the enviromental sciences part of the Union. They are the ones responsible for long term monitoring and management of specific at-risk habitat and populations.
Their job is similar to Area Rangers, only if they see signs of human interruption they call the Area Rangers and get the heck out of dodge. Their job is strictly tagging pokemon, taking soil samples, checking water temperature and quality, monitoring construction sites for pokemon nests and even handing out hunting tickets for overpopulated species.
That doesn't tickle your fancy? What's that? You want to pet the pokemon but not get attacked by an angry Ursaring?"
<A massive photo of a little Sneasel takes up most of the projector. It is a strange color - purple instead of blue - but otherwise is staring up at the camera with a characteristic look of mischief. Other photos show pokemon being released into natural spaces, and infant pokemon nursing from bottles.>
"Rehabilitation is the name of the game! or job. Unsuprisingly there is a massive branch of pokemon welfare within the Union, both for the ride pokemon born and raised in captivity as well as injured pokemon who are going to be re-released. The Union also funds and runs its own breeding programs to reintroduce species back into their original habitats and potentially bring back ancient species that were wiped out by human intervention.
An example - not related to the Union - is with @sneasedtomeetyou who has spent time breeding hisuian sneasel - an extinct poison type - from the recessive genes recently discovered in modern sneasel. It's their hope to reintroduce these species back into Sinnoh because it was recently discovered that certain species of trees grow only after the seed has passed through the digestive tract of certain poison types."
<This slide shows what seems to be a group photo of a handful of trainers and their partners. They are all posing dramatically for the camera and wearing matching uniforms. In the distance there is a herd of Rhydon grazing peacefully, ignoring the presence of the humans and pokemon in the foreground.>
"What? Some of you want to deal with people more than pokemon? Jeez - picky crowd today.
Luckily I have a solution. The Union employs a lot of security forces both in the field and in their buildings. Because there are high risk pokemon in the protection of the Union - no I'm not going to tell you where or what they are, put your hand down - we need security guards who are skilled combatants to protect them. This is a perfect job for professional or aspiring trainers who need a fallback plan or simply don't want to be in the competitive scene anymore.
<The final slide is very empty compared to the previous ones - yet contains a lot more words. There is a provided email for the Pokemon Union as well as a large QR Code that seems to forward people to the scholarship page of the Union website.>
"In conclusion. The Union employs a wide variety of people with drastically different skills and needs. If you want to be Ranger - go for it! Be the best that you can be. But if you don't, I hope you will consider the opportunities presented here and maybe I'll hear you sometime over the phone telling me...
'Mission Clear!'"
<Honey gives a bow to the applause of the crowd, and awkwardly leaves the stage... before having to even more awkwardly return on stage, retreive a very miffed Lamp, and exit again; blushing madly.>
