today, i taught a morning class that made me convince that it should be an international war crime for me to teach anything and that maybe in fact i am a scam artist of the highest order who's first and most effective scam was against myself.
then, i taught my afternoon class and two of my students came up to my after class to share that they're starting the second part of d&d campaign and that reading frankenstein in our class actively influenced the first campaign and now reading do androids dream of electric sheep with me is changing how they're going about the second.
and, as i walked out my class with them, i bumped into another one of my students from a different class who shared that he's in the middle of watching Howl's Moving Castle for tomorrow's class and this kid -- who actively has fallen asleep in my class several times -- was grinning ear to ear and telling me he's loving it and that i bumped into him just as he paused the film to go for a bathroom break.
gotta remember this shit the next time i tell myself that actually i am committing a human rights violation of the highest order by daring to stand up in front of students and teach. i mean, i know the bad feeling will happen again and i still can't quite shake it, but still.

Don't worry y'all, reading comprehension sucks even more on facebook. (I'm the purple)
If you're wondering where orange even got students with disabilities from, so am I! I remembered the original post mentioning students with disabilities but it actually didn't. It shared an opinion piece titled "Teachers are using AI to make literature easier for students to read. This is a terrible idea." The article was paywalled so idk if it mentioned students with disabilities either.

Why do I keep pride flags of multiple gender and sdxual identities in my room instead of just the all encompassing pride flag?
Because having the individual ones expresses to my students that I am respecting of all identities and they don't have to tip toe around trying to figure out if I'm actually supportive or really just supportive of gay people.
Because of them, just today I had a conversation with one of my students about different representations of trans and bi people in cartoons and then another one of my students shyly asked me if they could have my gender fluid flag.
THAT is why theyre there.

So. It's a Friday morning. My students start with second language class so I am technically off duty, but still in the class.
And these freaking kids, man.
One is sitting firmly in a chair and not on the carpet because he has perhaps a three day old bruise on his leg and this internally 76 year child of five insists it's too painful and dangerous to sit on the carpet, he must sit on a chair.
The child that is displaying many, many autism symptoms is happily chatting away, having called me by my name for the first time since August today, wrecking me.
A child is going on thirty minutes of a full on tantrum outside with the counselor, replete with screaming, scratching, hitting and running.
And one inattentive but sweet boy keeps wandering up to me and telling me I need a hug, and continuing to squeeze even when I let go.
So, you know, a typical morning.

teaching gender & society next semester. How funny would it be if I taught it as Gender & Society (1989) and required the students to watch Brian Yuzna's hit 1989 movie Society each week as a way of talking about gender.
I'd probably get kicked out of the university, but damn it'd be a fun bit.
Probably gonna teach it more Gender as/in U.S. Society, situating both in the context of the other through an intersectional lens. Which means I can do some talk about media, tranarchy, and a bunch of other stuff

Okay, so. You know what I haven’t done before? An ask game (mostly because I don’t get a lot of interaction but we’re gonna ignore that)! Send me a learning style, and I’ll tell you the most effective way to teach that person in preschool because those are the only ages I’ve taught, so 3-5 years. It can be YOURS, it can be a CHARACTER’S, whether an OC or a previously established character. It can be a FRIEND, a CHILD, WHOEVER. But this is extremely fun. Feel free to send me more than one, too.
It doesn’t matter if I know you or not, random people can jump in and ask me. It is really fun and it helps me come up with teaching ideas. Make it as in depth or as vague as you want, but just a warning, the more vague it is, the less information I’ll have to go off of, so it won’t be as good as a response.
#Teaching stuff#Please ask me! I really enjoy CD#so this allows me to think about it more#Ask me stuff!#farewell fellow humans

My student shared a poem she's writing for her English class with me and it made me cry. I love seeing the potential and drive and talent of these kids.

Wanted to vent a bit about teaching but also share something that happened today and show that whole, yeah, teaching is exhausting, it's got its cute moments to.
My students are all squirrels cause as my grandmother has always claimed ' middle schoolers are squirrely'.
Transcript cause my handwriting is bad:
Panel 1: Remember, it's silent reading time. Voice level should be zero.
Panel 2: Why did you give me a zero!?!
<- Hasn't done a single assignment all year
Panel 4: Miss, I customized these ducks to look like Polnareff and Jotaro. Which one do you want?
Panel 5: ...... I guess it's not all bad.

Also, a small tip for teachers of littles (or bigs, tbh):
I use scented chapstick in my classroom that we rub a small circle of on my kids' hands as a reward. They call it a "smelly spot".
I've used this for multiple years, with multiple grade levels, and it's always a hit. I actually have past students still coming in daily for a smelly spot.
In fact, just today, two of my littles came to class brandishing pieces of paper so I could write down where I got the class smelly spots so their moms could buy them some. I think that was because they were princess smelly spots but still.
I must confuse the hell out of these parents wondering why their children are rubbing chapstick on their hands, though....
