Going back to episode 3 and the scenes at the camp you can see the end of an era in Alicent’s life. The end of her childhood and innocence and the beginning of what will turn out to be constant worrying about her children’s future. It’s her son’s second name day ffs and she is sidelined by everyone, including Viserys. She feels excluded from the political talks that directly involve her son and she is treated like an ornament that compliments Viserys’ life and reign, that maybe makes it prettier somehow, but has to match the rest of the furniture. You can see that she looks melancholy and sorrowful in that scene. I also like the costuming detail showing how she tries to dress in the Targaryen colors, how she tries to blend in, but at the end of the day no one pays any attention and she only manages to match with the curtains. :(

Updated List of Team Black:
Daemon: Fucks his niece on the night of his wife's funeral. Ignores his daughters, doesn't offer them comfort.
Rhaenyra: Fucks her uncle on the night of her cousin's funeral. The said Uncle being the widower of the departed cousin. Doesn't offer her husband comfort as he mourns the death of his sister.
Also Daemon: *MURDERS* his own Wife just because.....
Also Rhaenyra: Doesn't even show concern for her half-brother losing an eye. Instead demands that he be sharply questioned (tortured) about how he came upon the truth about her sons being bastards which reveals that she had committed high treason by mothering bastards.
Coming to Team Green:
Wants family to be safe from the reckless decisions made by Team Black. Alicent's fears were confirmed when Viserys supported Rhaenyra despite the latter's sons assaulting her son and mutilating him. This shows that Rhaenyra could get away with hurting her family and daddy dearest will be there to support her.
Rejects Lary's offer of hurting Lucerys and getting his eye as payback. Is appalled by Larys committing patricide and killing his brother She wanted her father as Hand again. She didn't want others to get killed for it.
Some might argue about Alicent keeping Larys instead of exposing him but with what she has seen in Episode 7 solidified her fears of her family being vulnerable therefore someone like Larys will come in handy.
AND FOR THE LAST TIME. Aemond DID NOT STEAL VHAGAR. A Dragon is not a slave. Vhagar chose Aemond as her rider. Once Laena died, the bond between her and Vhagar died leaving her free to be claimed by any Targ. Rhaena is not entitled to Vhagar just because she formerly belonged to her mother. If they wanna talk about Inheritance then Vhagar originally belonged to Aemond's family first, Vhagar was ridden by Aemond's Grandfather so Aemond has an equal right to claim that Dragon just like Rhaena going by their logic.
Does not touch eachother in a loving way:
I think people are blind to the scene where Otto hugs his daughter when he gets removed as Hand. He tells her to be strong if she's to survive Kings Landing. Keep in mind that Alicent trusted Rhaenyra over her own father when Rhaenyra got accused of coupling with Daemon. And when she found out that Rhaenyra indeed slept with someone other than Daemon she realises that Rhaenyra lied on her own mother's memory and betrayed her trust which got her father fired. Rhaenyra made a reckless decision and Alicent paid the price for it.
Alicent is supportive of Haelena's hobby even though she isn't interested in it herself. She sits and watches her daughter play with her insect collection despite getting bored.
Cannot satisfy unquenchable thirst for power
A case can be made for Otto.
When Alicent told Aegon that "he is the challenge" she's not insinuating that he usurp her throne. It's blatantly obvious that Rhaenyra's kids are bastards so once Rhaenyra dies Aegon indeed will be the next in line. And Rhaenyra's claim is already on shakey ground considering her reckless actions and if people were to find out about the legitimacy of her son's then it'll be evident that Rhaenyra has committed treason by mothering bastards and parading them around as rightful heirs. Hence Alicent's fears (sowed by Otto) of Rhaenyra hurting her children to solidify her claim to the Throne.
Am I to argue that Team Greens are completely innocent? I won't. They themselves make morally wrong choices which we'll see in the coming episodes. But to completely shift the blame from the Blacks and demonising the Greens thereby ruining the beauty that is the nuance among both sides is infuriating.

Currently reading fire & blood and i'm really wondering what exactly Alicent has done to even be called an "evil stepmother" in the first place? She is literally the average rich traditional Westerosi noblewoman. The worst things she has done are just calling rhaenyra a whore (which should be noted was said by Mushroom who was not even present at that time) and calling rhaenyra's sons bastards (which, well, is true) 😭
Book!Alicent's crimes:
- wanting her own blood on the throne (which she herself did not admit, but viserys said that when she proposed that rhaenyra & aegon I should be married)
- occasional snark about the blacks

Why am I supposed to hate Team Greens because Aegon likes watching the Toddler Hunger Games in Flea Bottom when Team Blacks has Rhaenys "hundreds of smallfolk just are acceptable collateral damage for my cool exit" Targaryen?

Alicent and ‘The White Princess’
I really feel that people who are so aggressively against Alicent Hightower’s actions in House of the Dragon should watch The White Princess, as it demonstrates exactly what her sons’ fates would be if Rhaenyra inherited the throne.
The White Princess begins with the marriage of Elizabeth of York to Henry Tudor, and covers the early years of his reign after winning the War of the Roses. Much of the show is about the many Yorkist rebellions Henry faced, as the remaining York loyalists sought to place a York once again on the throne.
One subplot in The White Princess is about Edward Plantagenet, the Earl of Warwick, who had a claim to the throne and was potentially seen at one point as a successor to Richard III. Very soon after Henry takes the throne, Edward - referred to as Teddy - is imprisoned in the Tower. Despite his sister’s constant pleas for his freedom, he remains there for over a decade until he is implicated in a plot to escape and is exceuted.
The main conflict is about Perkin Warbeck, who claims to be Prince Richard, one of the Princes murdered in the tower. In the show, he is confirmed to be Prince Richard - making him a legitimate York heir as the son of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville - and he gains the support of much of Europe, raises an army, and invades England. The plot of The White Princess goes on, and ultimately he is imprisoned alongside Teddy and excecuted as well.
Both Teddy and Perkin Warbeck were seen as threats to Henry Tudor’s reign because they were York heirs with strong claims to the throne. Factions were constantly mobilising in support of their respective claims and fighting the Tudors in their name. And so they were eliminated to secure Henry’s reign.
The politics of Westeros does not directly correlate with the politics of Tudor England, but still, if Rhaenrya inherited the throne, Alicent’s sons would face the same fates as these York heirs - either longterm imprisonment or exceution.
As Aegon and Aemond are both the trueborn sons of the last king, it seems even more likely that they would share the dire fates of Teddy and Perkin.
In the final episode, Elizabeth of York encourages Henry Tudor to pretend to kill Perkin Warbeck to remove him as a threat to their rule (although, for plot reasons, the real Perkin does also get excecuted). And she says to Henry:
Tumblr media
If you applied this to Rhaenyra it would be: The only way I can protect my sons [and my crown] is by telling the world I killed [Aegon and Aemond].*
This is what Alicent is protecting her sons against. This is one of the reasons her anger and fear is completely justified.
*Helaena may be safe, as Viserys didn’t alter the rules of succession for Westeros, so she wouldn’t really pose a threat to Rhaenyra or her children inheriting the throne. Though any sons she had would be in danger...
This is all explained far better by @hellsbellschime in their post How Alicent Hightower Was Forced Into War; this just illustrates how it likely would play out just as it did for the York claimants in The White Princess.
+ Also, I sympathise with Alicent’s actions because of what Elizabeth of York says in the same scene, about the right to rule:
(And by ‘given’, she means the right to rule being given by God)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why shouldn’t Alicent work to take the right to rule for her children, when their lives are at stake?

By far one of the most intriguing and mysterious characters in Dance of Dragons: Alys Rivers. (One of my favorites in F&B)💚
Alys is (supposedly) a bastard daughter of Lyonel Strong, although others suggest that she is a witch of the woods.According to Fire and Blood, Alys did sorcery, and she had visions in fire (yes, like Melisandre), which makes me think that she possibly met some red priest at some point. Many say that she used her spells to make Aemond Targaryen, the one-eyed prince, fall in love, and that she even had a child with him. In the book we are not told what happens to her, or her son. But I hope that in Fire and Blood II they clear that doubt for us.Can't wait to see her in House of the Dragon 🔥
Daemon: Who told you where to find me?
Aemond: My lady. She saw you in a storm cloud, in a mountain pool at dusk, in the fire we lit to cook our suppers. She sees much and more, my Alys.

Aegon and Helaena hosting the weekly family dinner…
🍽️ Aegon is worried because he wants everything to go well. He’s been over-planning everything for the past week. Helaena has been trying her best to not wack him in the head
🍽️ Helaena is a master chef and she has all of the food planed out for the night. Jaehaera and Maelor are helping her out in the kitchen and setting the table
🍽️ Aegon has Jaehaerys following him around cleaning the house before Grandma Ali comes over. Jaehaerys is tired of vacuuming and Aegon just keeps telling his son to “make sure there’s no dust anywhere! Aemond is sensitive to it”
🍽️ Helaena has to force Aegon to actually get changed in nice clothes for the night since he’s been cleaning all day
🍽️ Maelor, since he’s so young, usually likes to stay close to his parents, but when Alicent gets there all he wants to do is be held by her
🍽️ The dinner, like usual, goes perfectly well with the twins falling asleep as Aemond and Daeron read them stories, and with Maelor asleep tucked into Alicent’s arms. Aegon and Helaena are just happy to have their family there, all together and being fed good food

Black Stans are really out there portraying Alicent as this sexually frustrated woman who's only spouse rapist is an old dying man which apparently is the reason why she's so opposed to Rhaenyra who had a much better sex life than her. They're out there saying that the main reason for this conflict is jealousy.
If they weren't so dense they would know that Alicent wasn't angry at Rhaenyra because Rhaenyra slept with some dude. Alicent was angry because Rhaenyra lied on Aemma, her own mother's memory and got her father removed as Hand of the King. Rhaenyra made a reckless decision and Alicent paid the price for it, something that'll be recurring in the later episodes.
Then Rhaenyra proceeds to commit treason by mothering bastards and parading them around as heirs to the iron throne. It's crystal clear to everyone that Jacaerys and Lucerys are bastards. People who didn't oppose Rhaenyra back when she was named heir would definitely oppose her now for abusing her power. This will lead to Alicent's children being favoured as rightful heirs. During Otto's goodbye to Alicent he sows the seeds of doubt and fear into her mind by saying that her children's life will be endangered because of the strife that's happening as people started to favour Aegon than Rhaenyra and that Rhaenyra would cut off any challenge to her succession aka her children.
Fast-forward to Episode 7 and we've Aemond getting mutilated. And when Alicent please to Viserys, the man remains callous to his own son's (the very son for whom he married Alicent and forced her to bear children) pain and instead demands the boy about how he came upon the ***truth*** that is Rhaenyra's children being bastards. To top it off we've Rhaenyra's demand that Aemond be sharply questioned (tortured) to know from where he learnt the ***truth*** that she mothered bastards. It was after this insinuation that made Alicent snap and pick up that knife.
So kudos for making fun of a woman for putting up with her spouse who married her despite her being the same age as his daughter so that he can turn her into a baby-making machine because he wanted male children, the very reason for which he killed his previous wife for.

Episode 7 "Driftmark" thoughts
Spoilers obviously
- rhaenyra and daemon both agreeing that 10 years ago she was a child... so you agree you were groomed! So glad we're on the same page lol
- rhaenyra acknowledging that he's her uncle made me laugh "i need you, uncle"
- so, are we gonna talk about how rhaenyra and daemon's marriage is not valid bc they DIDN'T kill laenor? which means... their children also have no right to the throne... i know the characters will never know that, but i just think it's funny.
- rhaenys is the only Targaryen i love in this show. Glad she is aware daemon sucks
- it's really crazy to me how i can say "i understand why alicent is pissed" and someone will be like "SO YOU'RE OKAY WITH HER CUTTING A CHILD'S EYE OUT?" Like no. Thats not what i said. She's obviously not a fantastic parent, but she cares about her kids a whole lot more than viserys does. I think a lot of her anger in that scene was because viserys doesn't even try to see anyone's side other than rhaenyra's. And rhaenyra saying "thank you father" after she gets her way... yeah i'd be pissed too!
- daemon is actually horrible for not entering into that conversation when his two daughters just got attacked? Like jesus christ i know laena was so upset in her grave.
- alicent's entire world revolves around rhaenyra.. u expect me to believe she's not in love and doesn't know that that's what that feeling is /hj
- otto is sooooo evil. I genuinely hate him so much. Alicent is a mess bc she doesn't care about power. Ppl comparing her to cersei makes me laugh... maybe in the books that was the case but definitely not in the show. She is Otto's pawn, and that is so depressing.

So, if you think being a bastard or being called a bastard shouldn't be a bad thing in the world of Westeros (as it isn't in our modern society) and shame The Greens for thinking so: shouldn't that mean you think Jace and Jake overreacted when they attacked and maimed Aemond for calling them "Strongs"? Shouldn't that mean you have contempt for Rhaenarya for pretending her children are not from a man she was not married to? Her duplicity upholds the idea that children born within the time of their biological parents being married are better than, more legitimate than children born outside of their parents being married, so shouldn't you hate her for being so patriarchal?
Or...do you recognize the worldbuilding of ASOIAF when it comes to certain characters but not others? That's called hypocrisy and worthless literary analysis, FYI.
