[WIP] Interstella 5555 x Virtual Self OC
Title explains most of it. I'm somewhat basing the clothes design on technic_Angel (at least for the first one), also i'm thinking of naming her something related to cybernetic, so if anyone actually reads this, i'd appreciate if you shared any name recommendations you might have :]

2000's rhythm game inspired side project fromย @porterrobinson, Virtual Self, is a project ripe with intentional design, from audio to visual elements. This bootleg cassette run of the Virtual Self EP byย @bylloganย is a love letter to the lore of the project featuring double length J-card with two art variants, based on the two avatars of Virtual Self, Pathselector and Technic_Angel.

Now listen, I don't know if virtual self has a plot, but the fact that pathselector and technic_angel talk like regular people and were using the forum in 2002 has me questioning

Virtual Self - Virtual Self EP REVIEW
Porter Robinson has a tendency to re-invent himself upon every era. He debuted as an EDM and dubstep powerhouse under Skrillexโs OWSLA records with the release of his Spitfire EP at the age of 18. It was overall received extremely well, and he was hailed as a prodigy. However, with the release of his second album, Worlds, it seemed that he flipped his style on its head, delivering an emotional sparkling masterwork, an album unlike anything the world of electronic has ever seen. And now, with his side project, Virtual Self, heโs done it again.
Virtual Self is an ode to the variety of genres Porter grew up with and inspired him to make music in the first place. In the past, Porter has spoken on the role games like Dance Dance Revolution have played in his upbringing. The genres seen in the gameโs original soundtrack, such as trance, speedcore, and hardcore music lay the framework to Virtual Self. Porterโs first EP under Virtual Self feels like something that could come straight from DDR or Beatmaniaโs soundtrack, while still maintaining a sense of individuality Porter is renowned for. The structure of the EP is unique in itself. Virtual Self is comprised of two characters, technic_angel and Pathselector. While technic_angelโs songs (โParticle Artsโ, โa.i.ngel (Become Godย & โEON BREAKโ) are more inspired by the hardcore genre, Pathselectorโs works (โGhost Voicesโ & โKeyโ) are more trance-influenced.
Virtual Self - EP is ethereal. Porter Robinson excels at creating universes within his music, seen in his first album, and this as well. By the end of the five short tracks on the EP, it feels like Porter has created much more than 20 minutes of material. Each track on the EP seems to evoke a certain emotion, delivering an array of sensations unmatched by any piece of electronic music Iโve seen in the past. โKeyโ is a prime example. I have not heard any other song perfectly convey the feeling of raw bliss in the way that the end of the song has, its hardcore drums beating rapidly while its synths dwell and draw slowly. Itโs almost overwhelming, but also oddly relaxing at the same time. I cannot lie, I have shed a tear multiple times while listening.
Porter does an excellent job of utilizing speed to his advantage, taking the basic elements of speedcore seen in artists like m1dy and Kobaryoโs work, but not making it the focal point of his songs. โKeyโ and โEON BREAKโ do an excellent job with this, with their quick-fire drum patterns nestled under beautiful trance synths and elongated piano melodies. While pure speedcore can be a bit too much for me to handle (just look up any of m1dyโs work), โEON BREAKโ is the perfect blend of sensory overload and sheer motivational force. โEON BREAKโ particularly amazed me, as it sounds like it belongs in Dance Dance Revolution or IIDX as a boss song. I found it to be reminiscent of DJ Yoshitakaโs โValkyrie Dimensionโ, a challenging sound found in DanceDanceRevolution X2.
A great portion of the album is very upbeat and loud in nature, with songs like โParticle Artsโ leaving the listener feeling like they are driving in a metropolis in the sky. However, the album has its calmer moments as well. The grammy-nominated โGhost Voicesโ, the song from the album that has gotten the most attention, is a trance masterpiece, with an infectious drop and a buildup that replicates the feeling of traversing a digital galaxy. The song deserves all the praise it gets. I have never heard a song that is so perfect for both dancing and sleeping at the same time.
โa.i.ngel (Become God)โ stands out as a much more complex track on the project. While it certainly draws a great deal of inspiration from the earlier genres that came before Porter and his music, serves to be the most unique song on the project. This song showcases Porterโs ability to create sheer atmosphere, as the song sounds like it could be ripped straight from the soundtrack of a movie. Its distorted outro is certainly a highlight of the album.
The EP particularly resonated with me as someone who also grew up playing games and listening to music from the various games in the Dance Dance Revolution series. Hearing a ย reimagination of the music that shaped my tastes in music and games overall is magical to me. And while Porter has stated multiple times that Virtual Self was created for himself rather for his fans, it is certainly a good feeling to see some of your favorite dead genres be not only revived, but well-received from a much wider audience. I give this project 9/10 stars.
