Technoprogressive-democratist synthesis proposal:
It is undemocratic for there to be people within the state who do not have the rights and privileges of citizens.
Only citizens of the state may demand that the state accept new citizens.  This process should, of course, be undertaken in a decentralized and autonomy-maximizing way that recognizes the equal authority of all citizens.
So: each citizen, over the course of his lifetime, gets to create one (1) new citizen of his choice.
You pick whether that’s an immigrant or a child.

Session 4: The narrative power of Sci-Fi
Session 4: The narrative power of Sci-Fi
Date: 08.06.20
Guest: Marcel Mayr
Marcel Mayr studied technical cybernetics and computing and information science in Germany and the UK. He works part-time as a technology consultant, he has founded tech and fashion companies and is active in political/cultural/artistic projects. When digging deep into science, research and humanistic/technophilosophical debates, he’s mostly engaged in topics which pinpoint the growing gap between technological advancements, dualistic conservatism and the unreasonable human soul. He was the founder of the transhuman party in Germany and is a critical writer, speaker and artist addressing human emotions and values in times of artificial intelligence, nano-neuro-bio-psychology, technoprogressive social societies and the digital quake. If anything, he is a fighter for freedom, authenticity, humanism and empathy. He has lived in Italy, Switzerland and the UK and has lately moved from Stuttgart to Berlin, Germany, to launch a philosophical fashion label and working as an artist/writer.
In this session, the key conceptual question that underlies all else was about direction. Whether in politics, design, philosophy, or technological innovation, the participants tried to estimate a current point of view and the direction we are heading towards depending on personal wishes for the future: What world do I want to live in? Can I change the future? Can I change the past? Do humans have any value and how many should exist for how long? Who am I anyway? How should I live? Who is to decide? Do I love, hate, fear…? Why? What, if anything would I change in the world, with people, with me? What role do narratives play in the fiction?

notes from a discussion today on transhumanism from the outside view
transhumanists are difficult people. they literally think "people wear glasses, therefore cryonics and whole brain emulation and nanotechnology is a thing that will happen, also the simulation hypothesis" is straightforward logic that follows, as is technolibertarian politics. some are charming, others are extroverted but with odd ways of interacting with other people. they will say ghastly and offensive things in everyday casual conversation as if it's reasonable and sensible to go on about race realism human biodiversity whatever the next euphemism on the treadmill the SSC comments section comes up with all the time, and not understand why people get upset at them. the difficulty in getting someone blatantly advocating eugenics to admit that what they're advocating is correctly described by the word "eugenics".
the subject matter - the ideas transhumanism thinks it's about - is less interesting than the people. transhumanism is best understood not as pure ideas, but as a subculture with a history, and the ideas as exchanged tokens of subcultural capital.
transhumanists are as bad as heavy metal fans in delineating sub-sub-subgroups, and loudly declaring those other guys aren't really real transhumanists. they are able to correctly ascertain the cringe level of the subgroups they’re not in, even as it eludes them concerning their own. they piss each other off so much. the technoprogressives versus the extropians->lesswrongers versus whatever the fuck zoltan istvan is versus reasonably sensible people convinced enhancements are an obviously good idea given homo sapiens literally evolved to use tools. i have had transhumanists on my facebook literally try to No True Transhumanist away lesswrongers and Ray Kurzweil. (the correct outside view approach is to ignore this infighting.)
(you also see this in Effective Altruism. the mosquito nets vs AI dialectic. when MIRI-leaning EAs seriously tried to claim Dylan Matthews wasn't a real EA after he ripped them a new one. yeah no.)
the ideas are literally descended directly from science fiction. (and christian theology, which transhumanists balk at but Charlie Stross documents the smoking gun and it's immediately obvious to contemporary Christian transhumanists too. as if reinventing a vengeful Yahweh from first principles wasn't sufficiently glaring.) "transhumanism" the subculture didn't really get going until the eighties and nineties, but the whole idea is to make anime science fiction real.
this has a number of implications. firstly, science fiction is never about the future, it's always about the present - the time period it was written in. so the technoprogressive transhumanist dream, with flying cars and holidays on the moon and moving sidewalks and healthy humans and everyone can be white and middle class now, is back from the post-war golden age, back when a bit of the wealth came back to the workers and you could reasonably expect society would take care of you a bit.
then of course neoliberalism happened, and cyberpunk promptly supplied the science fictional commentary on that. neuromancer as science fiction noir, complete with hardboiled male main characters and femmes fatales. (an observation that is 100% from @elsandifer, whose next work will be on cyberpunk. please give due credit if you use it anywhere.) this foreshadows right-wing libertarian transhumanism, where despite their honeyed words concerning all of humanity these people turned out, in a turn of events that surprised only those who weren't paying attention, to be vicious fascists who want you fucking dead you fucking toxoplasmotic sjw filth. i mean, the technoprogressives were mostly comfortable white men too, but at least they thought the idea involved bringing the rest of humanity with them.
there is also the feeling they give off that we can technologise our way past all the hard parts of dealing with people. there are single right answers, after all, we just need to find them! ignoring that if our descendants can be called human, they'll still be arseholes. only forever. the singularity will be nasty, brutish and long.
by the way, i'm entirely down with bodily enhancements and living an extended time with no finite end in sight and if cryonics had the faintest chance of working, which it seriously doesn't ask a neuroscientist you ridiculous dipshits oh my god, i'd be in there like a shot. i'm all up for shit that has a chance of working. i'm not up for castles in the air with provably impossible foundations or giving money to serial incompetents who talk a good game. transhumanism is less a programme of action and more a group exercise in constructing a shared science fictional world. increasingly orion's arm.
the ideas that are good are badly hampered by the “transhumanism” label and especially the subculture.
glasses are a great example of a hugely successful assistive technology. when they were invented around 1286 or so and were immediately popular with the technocrats of the day, the people who read for a living. (reading back then was like programming now. a respected technical skill, important to civilisation, but you certainly wouldn't expect everyone to.) like, it was 20 years for everyone (who needed them to read) adopting them and for wearing these things on your face to become somewhat normal, which was drastically fast at the time.
wearing glasses obviously doesn't mean all sorts of weirdy bullshit follows. transhumanists are far too often people who think it does.
also i had enough black coffee today that i could sense time using my back teeth.

Star Trek is an outgrowth of a specific sort of technoprogressive liberalism. The ideological foundation for it is that the progression of science and technology will eventually overcome societal problems and religion. In the victory of science and technology, liberal technoprogressives imagine politics getting replaced by experts and tech. And economy gets replaced by a sort of scientific planning to society.
This, they imagine, would create a free and equal society where all needs are satisfied by science and technology. Which is, of course, incredibly flawed. Their imagining of a free and equal society is one run by scientists scientifically. But they fail to recognize the way in which these scientific planners would disrupt the freedom and equality they seek. And same with them imagining needs getting met through scientific planning, but scientific planning is incapable of meeting needs for self-direction. And they create this dichotomy between religiosity and science, ignoring the way they treat science religiously. (This is why there's a conspicuous lack of religious people in Star Trek.)
Ultimately, people imagine Star Trek to be an expression of communistic principles, but they fail to recognize its actual ideological base.

#IAmTranshuman Ethics Board Nominations for Public Comment
There are a number of reasons the IAmTranshuman project needs an ethics review board, but the major reason is to oversee the micro-grant program and other operations and to ensure we are doing the right thing.  As a Transhumanist Organization ethics should be above reproach.  One of the key issues is we don’t want even ethics board members that are part of the same organization if at all possible.  Here are some of the submissions for public comment:
David Wood
One of the pioneers of the smartphone industry. He is now a futurist activist, consultant, speaker, and writer.
As Chair of London Futurists, David has organized over 200 public meetings since March 2008 on futurist, transhumanist, technoprogressive, and singularitarian topics. Membership of London Futurists now approaches 8,000.
As Executive Director of the transhumanist think tank Transpolitica, David is presently working on a “technoprogressive roadmap” of goals for the UK to keep in mind for accomplishment by 2035. These goals envision the possibility of profound increases in human wellbeing.
Read more on his profile:

Tom Ross
A producer, creative consultant, and author yet feels odd referring to himself in the third person. My political experience includes a 2001 testimony before a U.S. House Subcommittee on Media and Information Technology Policy (The Anti-Spam Bill). In 2002 the Governor of California appointed me to a Department of Consumer Affairs board. I became the National Creative Director for Entercom, the 2nd largest radio group in the U.S. and built one of the first and biggest Visual Production operations in the industry. I designed a system to find, test and scale the best ideas from the quietest corners in hundreds of stations. In 2013, I shared this system in a TEDx Talk called “Open Source Mode”.  I’ve also produced creative assets for namedrops like IBM, Microsoft, and Styx and have Creative Consulted for good works like the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute and Sir Bob Geldof’s youbloom.com.  My novel, US6 is designed to illuminate and entertain a future Artificial yet Self-Aware Superintelligence while enlisting it and Human readers into the fight against Modern Slavery. I’m an INTJ, Existential Intelligence Type, Vegan, GenX Mensa member with Scorpio Rising, Transhumanist.

Marty Resnick
Why #IAmTranshuman (ist)?
I became a Transhuman, or as I call it an “Architected Human” in December 2018. At that time, I received life-extending and saving, technologies including a mechanical heart valve and pacemaker. This life-changing event introduced me to the concept of Transhumanism which is now a key part of my research, writing, and focus, at work and in my personal life.
I believe true societal transformation will be the result of Human Transformation and Ethical Transhumanism will drive that transformation.
Marty Resnick is a Storyteller, Futurist, Analyst, Strategist, Photographer, and “Architect-ed Human”. Currently, Marty is a Sr. Director Analyst at Gartner covering emerging technologies, human augmentation, innovation and foresight. Marty also hosts a podcast called “Continuous Foresight”.
https://iamtranshuman.org/2019/12/11/martyresnick/
Taha Ghassan
Why are you transhuman (ist)?
I am a transhumanist because I believe it’s the way to bring full human potential and to evolve
Live in a world where I can spend learning with no limitations
Taha is a programmer, biohacker and IT specialist with a passion for technology to improve his life and defeat death.
https://iamtranshuman.org/2019/12/20/taha-ghassan/
Commentary
All of these guys would be great but there are a couple of issues with this list.  David Wood and Tom are both part of the USTP so ideally only one of them can be accepted.  That said David, Marty and Taha are all also members of Humanity+ so really limiting it to one of them is ideal.  Marty has said he has no affiliation and ideally it is a 3-person review board so there are no ties, therefore IAmTranshuman organization members believe the best combination as it stands now is David, Marty, and Taha or one other person not a member of this current list.   This is not to say that any of the applicants are not great but there is a need to limit implied control over the ethics review board. Let us know what you think of these volunteers and if you would like to volunteer.
