#kirby#daily kirby#my art#digital#hal laboratory#nintendo#so like aliexpress used to have a terrible reputation in terms of like quality and truth in advertising and such right#but like. amazon and etsy are swamped with bootleggers and dropshippers now too#so I figured like. can't be any worse right?#besides I know how to double check descriptions and measurements and examine images critically#I've shopped shady sites before like back when banggood was the only place to get those cute diy miniature kits#(now you can get them at regular craft store chains which is Wild to me)#but I have never opened aliexpress because everyone was always just like 'Never Go There'#(but then again these days folks are doing massive temu hauls left and right)#(so clearly norms have changed even if common perception of aliexpress has not)#I open it up and I immediately find the rug I spent an entire day hunting for unsuccessfully earlier in the month.#and a ton of incredible bootleg kirbs.#and a style of hair clip I've been hunting for for *years*.#soooo I spent the entire day in a pastel fugue lol#(I have not spent any money yet but I'm probably gonna)#(so like I can't confirm that you're not gonna get scammed or whatever just like. use common sense.)#(don't trust sale prices read descriptions/reviews when available and try to avoid work stolen from independent artists)#(that's usually gonna be on printed stuff like phone cases and posters)#(and tbh I have no qualms with stolen official art as long as the quality is as advertised)#(but there's a big difference between stealing from Multinational Corporation and stealing from Some Guy)#anyway done rambling now <3#favorites

I know this has been said before, but I'm going to say it again: wanting to have a different core aesthetic just because you saw someone else dressing that way on Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram, etc. just leads to more consumption.
I've seen people who want to change their entire wardrobe just to fit into a certain aesthetic whether, that be coquette, emocore, Twilight core, and now the next big thing being the office siren aesthetic.
There is nothing wrong with liking a certain style, but the problem comes when you're going on to Shein, Temu, Amazon and even the thrift just to have your entire wardrobe imitate that aesthetic.
Doing this just leads to more overconsumption, and yes, you can overconsume at the thrift store. People do it all the time with these giant thrift hauls of Y2K Mcbling clothing or whatever because they want to fit in with the next aesthetic trend.
While I don't change my entire style to fit with an a certain aesthetic I do have an issue with overconsuming just like everybody else and this year I'm trying to work on bettering myself in that area.

idgaf if people get mad but it makes me so upset when people attack someone for pointing out the simple fact that shein, temu, and other brands are in no means ethical to shop at and people should stop purchasing from them IF THEY CAN. they justify it and influencers by saying how some people cannot afford necessities from anywhere else, so they have to resort to these brands, but that is not the point we are trying to make. the big issue is with the unethical labor practices and especially within the influencers making ENORMOUS hauls worth $200+ each. if they can afford numerous hauls of those proportions, can they not afford to purchase from somewhere at the very least not AS unethical as temu, shein and other fast fashion brands? yes, i come from a place of privilege where i can afford nice clothing from ethical places, but i can still give my two cents. people also forget second-hand options such as thrifting and hand me downs exist, which i strive to source clothing as much as i can from them.

i know. i know. they do it to get the views, its topical etc. but im still just. disgusted by youtubers i like and follow doing these stupid temu/wish/shein hauls while trying to disguise it as some vague "raising awareness" about the poor working conditions and impact on the environment
like making enough comments that its like. ok this youtuber knows abt the shitty working conditions and the impact on the environment these fast-fashion online retailers have but you dont care because ough shopping give me serotonin for two seconds. brother youre going to trash or donate the thing in a week once you realize it made no impact in your life beyond getting those youtube views

Man idk it's just so frustrating, like. I can limit my textile consumption and focus on reducing my overall microplastic output by wearing primarily natural fibers, and wearing the same clothes for years and years, and building a wardrobe with occasion versatility in mind thereby needing less, and getting clothing from thrift stores, and even knitting some of my own (with only natural fiber yarn), and donating clothing that doesn't fit me anymore to the locally owned thrift store that actually puts it out to be sold locally instead of shipping it away to be other people's problem, or giving pieces i've outgrown to people in my life, and, and, and, and,
but! all of any good any of that has done (except for my own personal feelings being better and my outfits being fire) is immediately negated by Shein Hauls Georg who has 50 pieces of 100% plastic lead-filled clothing shipped in a week in individual plastic baggies and throws them straight in the landfill to make room for the next round and then on top of that gambles with the stupid savings wheel on Temu on the side.
I'm not going to say it's not worth it to try to do well because personally I enjoy it very much and it makes me happy to engage with clothing in the way I do. But that's on a personal level. On an ethical and environmental level it is fucking miniscule at best and goddamn worthless at worst because my efforts are not going zero-pairs on the efforts of the people obsessed with ultrafast fashion, and would not cancel out their impact unless i lived dozens of lifetimes as a hyperminimalist nudist sworn off textile use entirely, which is not only not possible, but also sounds fucking miserable (and cold)

heyyy what are your opinions on buying from fast fashion places like shein, temu, aliexpress etc
Hi !! Hope you’re well !! This is such a good ask bc it’s something I’ve had on my mind recently.
My feelings on it are a bit complicated. I don’t know much about the other two, but I’ve heard a lot about shein.
Obviously, the production process is abhorrent. Sweatshops are fucking awful, the way the workers are treated is disgusting . But shein, temu and aliexoress aren’t the only ones doing it. A lot of high street shops are also guilty of it, but it’s less spoken about. Those places violate human rights to an insane degree, and a lot of the time we can’t avoid paying into it.
However, I think it’s the sheer volume of people that are using these sites that make it worse. I’ve bought from shein before, and my sister has used temu, and the clothing isn’t the best quality. It isn’t made to last, and people often use it as a cheap way to follow trends, which obviously ups the demand, and thus the workload.
I know a lot of people use it because it’s cheap, I’ve seen a pair of fifty pound trousers on shein for ten pounds, and I can understand that people simply can’t afford. But like I’ve said before, the clothes aren’t made to last, and people are more likely to throw them out and replace them, than they are with more expensive, higher quality, long lasting clothes but they simply just can’t afford them.
Something I can’t get behind however, are the people who do £100 tiktok shein hauls almost every week. There’s no need, nobody needs to buy clothes every single week just because it’s what’s on trend in that moment. I see the charity shops filling up more and more with shein clothing, or see it in bins in near perfect condition. I personally think if you’re going to buy from places like that, at least have it be something you’re going to wear for a long time.
I can’t shame people for something I’m guilty of too. But I do try to shop second hand more than I do high street or online. I think you’ve just got to do the best you can where you can, and be conscious of your consumerism.

Overconsumerism
Imagine telling a starving child in Mexico that you're going to the store to purchase your 30th Stanley cup (You didn't have that shade of pink yet).
Ignoring the fact that they're impractical and will undoubtedly end up in thrift stores in a year or two, Stanleys are REUSABLE water bottles. Keyword REUSEABLE. This means that you don't have to get a new one every time you finish it. Also, no, you're Stanley doesn't need it's own backpack???
Imagine telling a child worker who is missing fingers at the ripe age of 7 from being so overworked because they're trying to help out their family that you have to go film your 4th Shein and Temu haul of the month.
We all know that these microtrends that you bought are going to stay in the back of your closet until you decide that they are ugly and throw them away. Unworn because you have a million other items of clothing that are overfilling you're closet.
If you are in a tough financial situation, I can understand buying a couple things from Shein, just so you have a couple new things. But if you are an influencer who is literally making bank and going on expensive, fancy trips for content and STILL buying HUGE hauls of cheap clothing made unethical by slaves, you are the problem and I hope you know whatever higher power you believe in is looking down at you in disgust and shame.
"Who wants to see my HUGE Shein haul 😋!!!" Nobody. The abused little girl who made it probably doesn't care that you just found the cutest top to wear this summer.
