Rokudaime Hokage Kakashi hanging around someone’s roof, as one does. かかし.

I had some thoughts on the timeline about Dai and B&B au.
Dai on day one waking up semi delirious and running into a furious Kakashi after he picked the Forget me knot. Learning the story from the furniture (which yup. These are the best animatronics he has ever seen! He once made a small moving toy for Gai but this is beyond him! (That or he's dying from fever. One or the other. But magic does not exist so its not that ^^b)). And making a self rule/ promise that he shall not return until he made things right with the young hairy master, by fixing his garden!
Dai seeing Asuma with a crack on his clock face and using his old skills to fix it on day 2 of being there. Also helps tune him up afterwards so he's running better than ever. Then gets back to work outside (Kakashi does a double take at that.)
Dai being thrown into the carriage, only to not only break it open from the inside with his tools, force the carriage take him back; but he fixed that up too before returning to the garden. This is day three. (Kakashi doing a triple take!)
Day 4 and Kakashi is forced to have a conversion with this strange, stubborn man when he realizes yelling, intimidating and literally throwing him out won't work. Tries to get him to leave only to learn about this man's life and sweet young son back home.
Day 5 and Dai learns the beastly man has a name! Sickness is getting worse but he has made a promise and he will get through it. Also is starting to fear the wolves will use the new exercise machine he made to grow powerful and become the dominant species after growing jacked. Kakashi seems a lot more worried about him after he discloses that information.
Day 6 and Dai can't stop hacking up a lung. But he promises on his youthful spirit that he will get this done. No matter how many times Kakashi throws him over his shoulder and puts him back in bed. He swears that after all this, he will also teach this young man how to shave since his own father was not there to teach him. Poor thing. In the mean time the two have an actually fun talk about science and how clocks and other household items can be fixed. Wishes the fluffy boy would stop playing a pranks on him with this magic stuff but alas, understands if he wants to keep his machines a trademarked secret.
Day 7, his sweet young son is here! And he just kicked his host in the face!!! Must de-escalate the situation! By now his baby boy, his furry boy, and the furniture are all starting to make sense and maybe he should see a doctor for a brief visit while his son does some of the work for him. Promises to be back soon and for Gai to be nice to their furry host. Asks Kakashi to treat his young boy (who is 21) nicely. And finally accepts the carriage ride back to the village. Hopes his boys will get along without him...
Love the thought of Dai venomously denying the existence of magic and refusing to hear anything about a ‘magic curse’ or furniture that’s actually human’s. Preposterous!
And the immediate adoption of Kakashi is delightful. Man saw a fury child and went ‘ah, yes. A child in need of a father’ XD just didn’t realize his role as a father would be that of a Father-in-law XD he has to learn that the hard way when he finds out his son went and fell in love with the fury man.
Asuma getting fixed! He has had that crack for years after a bad spill, and Kakashi was able to repair him a bit so he kept working but he could never repair the glass.
Dai finds some unused glass in the castle and cuts a piece out if it perfectly fitted for Asuma, and replaces it with such ease that Kakashi and all of the staff are amazed.
He even fixes up some of the other furniture if he can. Like Obito has a bent candle arm that he warps back into place and Kurenai has broken hinges that he happily replaces before turning his attention to the dusty state of the castle.
He even fixes Tenzo who’s screws have gone a bit rusty over the years and makes sure he’s in good working order again before continuing his work in the garden (it’s hard for Kakashi to hold a screwdriver. Fixing Asuma was hard enough with his giant paws, Dai did that job way better than he could have)
Also i imagine Kakahsi being very intrigued with Dai’s inventions and being the first person other than Dai who wants to hear more. Which is where the major comparisson between Kakashi and Madara appears.
Madara treats Dai as a nuisance and crazy for his ideas
Kakashi clearly admires him and wants to hear more
The choice is pretty easy for Gai to make even if he didn’t spend months hanging out with Kakashi slowly falling in love with him

Prompt Discussion - (Not) My Circus, (Not) My Genin | Roots
Tumblr media
Ten Days of Tenzo 2023: Day 6 (Nov 6)
Each year, the prompts for Ten Days of Tenzo are open to your interpretation! We enjoy all the TDOT participation, and we wanted to give some ideas for how you could interpret each prompt.
(Not) My Circus, (Not) My Genin
This prompt comes from the idiom "Not my circus, not my monkeys," which is a way to express that a person isn't responsible for whatever problem is arising. A fitting prompt for Tenzo, who comes into being a Ninja Teacher when Team 7 is climbing towards their peak of drama. We put (not) in brackets, because we know Tenzo can't help but get involved with whatever his team is up to! What kind of trouble can Tenzo's team stir up going on a mission, getting up to mischief in the village, or even some shenanigans in one of their homes!
Looking at the "Not my Genin" part, we could take that more literally, and have Tenzo dealing with other young ninja in the village. Konoha 12, Konohamaru and Hanabi, Boruto or Sarada, or a character we've never met before. Will we finally find why in one Shippuden, Tenzo knows the secrets of all of Team 8? Will we learn (Boruto spoilers) why Moegi has mokuton? Will we see Tenzo competing with his friends for the title, "The Great Genin Babysitter?"
You could also take the "Circus" and roll with it. Want to draw Tenzo as a clown? A strongman, acrobat or animal tamer? Have it. We know there are circus ninja out there, and you can have Tenzo run away to join them, or get accidentally swept up in an act, or even be in battle and gather an audience who thinks he's performing. The sky's the limit, and we'd love to see Tenzo up there in some comically large circus balloons.
Roots
Tenzo is a character whose origins are fairly ambiguous, and we can think of those origins as his "roots." Where was he born? Who were his family? Under what circumstances were the first few years of his life? You may tell the story of his childhood, or maybe have an older Tenzo rediscover his own history.
In the Naruto anime, we also see Tenzo connected to the Anbu organization Root (or the Foundation, in dubs). What was his life like? Was it similar to Sai's, or did he have his own unique position due to his unique strengths? What was it like for him to leave? Did he have any friends/loved ones that he might've been separated from? Did he find those people again after their leadership died? Would he want to help in their rehabilitation/reintegration after the war?
To take it in the direction of plants: This could be the perfect time to make a "He's my sweet potato," "I Yam," joke, since they're root vegetables. Maybe we're think of roots in terms of being underground, either in being "unknown" even Tenzo going on a spelunking trip.
Roots can also have meanings linguistics and in math, so do you see Tenzo as a mathematician or actuary? A linguist studying the origin of Ninja Language as We Know It? Take any meaning of root you want, and roll with it!
Thank you to everyone who suggested a prompt, and to everyone who enjoys TDOT. These are just a few ideas! Feel free to get creative.

Turn the world off.
Day 2 for kkym week. Uhm this is Kakashi's POV for what happens in chapter 3 of meet me in the woods, but it stands on its on so you dont need to know the context.
Hatake Kakashi / Yamato | Tenzo
Is not really explicit, but I don't know if its too much for M rating so... well, E then.
2140 words.
Ao3 Link [x]
for @kakayamaweek2022 Day 2: Late Nights.
It was impossible to find someone that he could distract himself with in the busy city of Konoha, at least while he looked the way he did, yes, but he needed somebody. Somebody, who was not disgusted when he was dirty, somebody who would let him in even if it was late at night and dark, someone who was always eager to help, someone who would please him if he asked for it.
Tenzo was such a person. No, Tenzo was that person.
Restless, Kakashi was walking up and down his apartment. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. He had not even taken off his shoes yet, dirtying the floor with what was underneath them without a care in the world. He did not spare a thought to the cleaning that would need to be done in the morning, to the fact that he was probably stomping and disturbing the people in the apartment below him. In fact, Kakashi wasn’t thinking any thoughts.
There was dirt on his ANBU vest at the front and dry blood. He should have taken this thing off hours ago, when his squad had finally been dismissed from duties to go and sleep off whatever horrors they had just witnessed during the night and early mornings, but Kakashi had done none of the sort, not taken off his dirty clothes, not showered or slept. Instead, he had gone in circles in his apartment. Back and forth. Without rest.
When he’d been woken up at night by a missive sent urgently, he had not expected the subject of the missive to be as gruesome as it turned out to be. Itachi, who had been in his team, a young, soft, reliable boy, had killed most of his family and relatives in what could only be described as a fit of rage. Murdered and murdered in cold blood, to leave nobody but his little brother alive. When Kakashi and the rest of his team arrived on the scene it was full of bodies and blood.
ANBU guards, Kakashi in particular, were used to gruesome sights and horrific missions. It was their job after all. But even with a strong stomach and a way to deal with all the horrors in front of their eyes, Kakashi could not fault others for throwing up or looking away. The sight in the Uchiha district was almost unbelievably traumatic. His squad had been asked to clean up the mess and Kakashi had complied, they all had, putting bodies on bodies on bodies and burning them. No time for the Uchiha custom burial for any of them. It was disrespectful in a way, but there were just too many of them.
Fact of the matter was, Kakashi had not been there. He had been there physically, but he had not been there mentally. The moment he had stepped in the Uchiha district and seen the dead bodies a rush of memories had almost entirely knocked him out. He used to be there a lot as a kid, he used to know Uchiha, Uchiha that had since died. And the thought that if they had not died as children they would have certainly died now, killed by the hand of someone Kakashi had mentored, was too much for him to handle.
So his body and his voice had worked on its own, while his mind had turned off to shut the unwanted feelings of anxiety out. Kakashi needed to be there for his squad, to be the leader he was appointed to be, but inside he reverted into the body of a twelve year old, losing too many people he loved in one sweep together.
After they’d been dismissed, Kakashi had not really wanted to go back into his apartment. Being alone with his thoughts right now was the worst thing that could happen to him. It would only lead him down a thought spiral he didn’t want to go down. He delayed as much as he could, offered more help to the hokage and his aids, but eventually Lord Third had put a grandfatherly arm on his shoulder and said: “Time to get some sleep, Kakashi” and there was nothing to do, it was an order after all.
Normally Kakashi would seek distraction in a moment like this. When he didn’t want his thoughts to drown him. It was easy to go downtown and get the attention of someone, someone that would take him home for a few hours to give him distraction. He did it all the time, pretty much since he was old enough to realise how charming he could be with his words. People also told him he was good looking, though he did not really believe any of that. Whatever the truth, people liked sleeping with the Copy-Nin, no matter where he went.
But today he was dirty and hadn’t even taken his blood stains off and just his appearance alone made it impossible for him to find anyone that was appropriate in a restaurant or bar. Not only that, he couldn’t go out in this state. People would stare and whisper and while Kakashi didn’t care about nicknames or other rumours they were spreading about him, he didn’t want those rumours to get to Lord Third. The last thing he needed was a forced break because his mental health wasn’t well enough for him to work.
His eye fell on the plant on the window pane. Mr. Ukki was written on it and Kakashi stopped to let his fingers run along the leaves. Tenzo had given it to him for his birthday and looked sternly. “You have to take care of it well,” he had said. “Don’t drown it but don’t let it dry itself out.” Overall terrible advice for someone who had never known how to handle plants, but Tenzo was still working on how to express himself. He was always eager to help, even if explanations could be a little hard.
That was when something crossed Kakashi’s mind like a flash of lightning.
He ripped the door open before he could change his mind and jumped over the rooftops away into the night. Tenzo, yes, Tenzo was there. Sweet, helpful, handsome Tenzo. He’d grown right before Kakashi’s eyes into a tall, good looking man. It was not like Kakashi hadn’t noticed it before, how Tenzo’s voice sounded when he spoke, how it vibrated and echoed, how his chest got larger and sturdier and his face more refined and manly. He was a man now and thought Kakashi had forbidden himself to look too much out of respect for his kouhai. Now, in this state he was in, with his brain shut off and his needs leading, he thought to himself that he was allowed to look. To do more than look.
Tenzo’s apartment was dark and when Kakashi looked into the living room it was empty. He hesitated for a second. He wondered if he might regret this choice, just for a split second, but then the darkness took over him. He wanted it, if it was good or not. He needed it, he needed nothing as much as this. So he knocked at the window, once, twice. It took Tenzo a moment to walk over, a kunai fast in his hand as if he expected Itachi himself to stand on the window sill, but when he realised it was Kakashi his eyes widened and he hurried to open the window.
“Senpai” he said with a gasp and then. “Why did you come here?” His eyes ran up and down Kakashi’s appearance and Kakashi knew he must look perfectly miserable, unshowered and full of blood, but he did not care. Instead he looked over Tenzo’s face, the hair that was still ruffled from sleep and a little too long for what he had lately, he was only wearing sweats and a shirt and Kakashi wondered when he’d ever seen him so casually. His eyes blurred
Tenzo softly reached out for Kakashi’s vest: “You should take this off.” Kakashi straightened his back to let Tenzo do the work on the vest. He wondered if Tenzo had ever undressed someone before, someone that was not him. He wondered if Tenzo had ever had someone in that way before. Months ago Kakashi had mentioned to him that he needed to get laid urgently, when he had found a stack of smut magazines lying around in his room, but had Tenzo taken the advice?
“Did you wash yourself?” Tenzo asked as he pulled the jacked off Kakashi’s shoulders. Kakashi shook his head so slightly that it was almost invisible and when Tenzo lifted a finger to wipe some dirt off Kakashi's face, the older man caught it with his hand as if it was a fly he needed to crush. Both men stared at each other, eyes to eyes and Kakashi could feel the heat inside him burning. “Tenzo” he said like a breath and leaned his head in closer. The need was overflowing him, drowning him. He needed it now, now, now.
Kakashi was fast, he was skilled, he knew how this worked. It was like a game he had played more than once. He wrapped a hand around Tenzo’s hip and drew him in, pressed himself against the other man's body as much as he could while taking his mask down with his free hand. He found Tenzo’s lips easily and pressed against them, leading the younger man backwards against a wall. Kakashi’s tongue forced its way into the other man's mouth and Tenzo replied, ever so the diligent student, ever so willing to please if that was what would make Kakashi happy. The fire burned hot now. It was like a form of self harm, a relief that could not be described with words. Kissing and fucking and all the sort, it was what let Kakashi truly turn off the world.
And Tenzo was a great partner. He let his body be moved from hands on back to hands in hair to hands in pants. He copied what he needed to copy, touched Kakashi the way Kakashi touched him and when the older man finally found his way down to Tenzo’s cock he found it hard and ready for him. Clearly Tenzo was enjoying himself too, Kakashi thought and took this to mean that he could continue what he was doing.
He was the one deciding where the dance lead and his body could do it without his mind’s occupation. In truth, Kakashi was only half present, completely in a fog of lust and need and pleasure that only such situations could provide him. Like a drug that instantly made him feel better. It wasn’t Tenzo specifically that did that, but it amplified the effect. That he could plug these sighs and moans of pleasure from someone he deeply cared about and not just a random person he met at a bar, somehow made it better.
They stumbled to the bedroom upon which Kakashi undressed Tenzo first and then himself. The younger man's face was flushed red and his eyes were wide in that way they usually were when he was nervous about something. But he did not complain, he did not say no, he let Kakashi crawl over him, touch every inch of him and let him lose himself too. They could both get over this day, the last night, together. They could both forget about the pain that waited for them on their next ANBU mission. Reality could wait at the doorstep.
Kakashi took a while to get completely satisfied, there was a lot on his mind that he needed distracting from, but Tenzo did not whine or complain and gave him everything he wanted. Sun was almost rising when Kakashi put his clothes on again, his breath going heavy and thoughts in his head spiralling. The guilt now crept in slowly, the fact that he had used someone that was so dear to him. It felt like a bitter pill on his tongue. He didn’t dare look at Tenzo when he left and so he just mumbled some generic goodbye message and opened the window again to leave.
At home he finally shed his dirty clothes and drew himself a bath. He felt better now, more awake than he had in over 24 hours. Maybe it would have been healthy to find someone else to fuck just for this night, someone that would not bring up questions later. But when Kakashi thought of Tenzo’s flushed face, the sounds out of his mouth, the way his body looked sweaty and pinned under him, then he could not help but think that he’d love to experience it again.
Sometime maybe, Kakashi thought. Maybe someday he would visit Tenzo again for a repeat.

Woah, congratulations on 1000 followers! 🤩 Very well deserved! I’m submitting on anon because I’m shy, lol, but I’ve been a follower for a long time and I’m really happy to see you having such success! 🥰
May I have a matchup from Naruto or FMAB? I use she/her pronouns, and I’m okay with any gender of match.
My big 3 signs are Aries sun, Sagittarius moon, and Libra rising, and I think that combination actually fits my general personality pretty well. A few words that describe me are optimistic, adventurous, assertive, and witty. My biggest flaw is probably bossiness/control issues. It’s mostly from a place of wanting to know the people around me are comfortable and enjoying themselves, and that I’m useful/helpful to them. But sometimes I do just get really caught up in my own ideas and thinking that the way I would do things is automatically the best. My ideal partner would be strong-willed enough to push back when I overstep, but even-tempered enough not to be hurt or offended. I work in a job where I’m usually “in charge,” which I do enjoy, but in my downtime I really want someone who will be an equal partner with me - and even convince me to give them the reins sometimes.
As for hobbies, I like baking and making drinks (both coffee and cocktails). It’s fun to experiment with ingredients and ratios. I also like camping, traveling, gardening, and all things creepy - books, movies, games, and I tell a mean ghost story too. 😉 My dream is to learn and experience as much about the world as I can, ideally alongside a special person, but alone is fine too.
I like dates that are active and seasonal - ice skating in the winter, leaf watching in the fall, beach dates in the summer, etc. My favorite relationship trope is fwb to lovers. Something about going into a situation like “just bros being hoes, no boring relationship stuff here,” and then getting swept up in genuine feelings for the other person is just 👌 Sexually, I’m for sure a switch and I guess dom-leaning. Even if I’m the “sub,” I’m going to be very bratty and stubborn about it, lol. Top kinks are lingerie (on both/either of us, but it’s especially hot when a man is willing to dress up for me ngl), rope play, orgasm denial, and hair pulling (on me). I’m realllly not into anything daddy/mommy related or any pregnancy/breeding talk.
Congratulations again, and thanks for this event!
Your match for the event is:

Tenzo/Yamato from Naruto!
Although he's rather passive, I do believe he's the type to stand up for things he considers important.
He'd probably find your 'bossiness' attractive, in a take charge sort of way.
I honestly can't see Tenzo knowing how to cook, but for the most part he's decent with up keep around the house.
That being said he will maintain a wonderful veggie garden for all cooking endeavors. (with some fresh fruits and herbs for your cocktails)
He would be extremely happy doing all things outdoors with you. Camping, gardening, swimming, travelling
He'd love to travel with you, but make sure you let him nerd out about all the historical architecture he's seeing along the way
Very happy to go camping with you, keep you warm at night by the fireplace as you take turns telling each other ghost stories while looking up at the stars.
Now for the spice!
I do firmly believe he's a switch that leans toward submissive.
He's not super kinky, but he does enjoy playing with toys. (has many and knows exactly how to use them)
When he's dominating I can see him being a little more soft, and more about service.
He would very much be willing to dress up for you, even if he's blushing the entire time about it.
I HC he's a grower, but it's a decent size while flaccid.
I can see him pulling hair in the heat of the moment kind of thing, and I believe he's hand with rope. He's just not super into things like mommy, daddy, degredation, kind of the like mind sets that can go along with kink... I think he keeps it pretty simple when it comes to mind set stuff.

most of my ROOT ideas arent anything too exciting! just stuff like uniforms, how induction works, voluntary members vs involuntary members, ect!! for instance: i dont know where this idea came from, but i heard in a fic a long time ago someone describe ROOT masks as "blank". now i cant get it out of my head. instead of colors on the masks, theyre perfectly grey/white. empty porcelain. i also think they're much more detailed to make up for that. the sculptor for the masks is likely an expert in the craft and puts in more effort to make them perfect. they dont need to churn out more masks with rapidly increasing members, so they can take their time on it. besides, a hyper-detailed oni mask would be terrifying and fit perfectly for a secret organization. (also i had this idea that somehow came to be that shisui is a cannibal. and that his favorite part of the body is the eye. he's always been curious about how danzo's eye would taste, but never voiced it because he was afraid of being ridiculed or punished for his demented thoughts. danzo is happy to help him find out, though. he has an extra eye that he can't even use, why not give it to a good cause?)
Ah, I see i see!
I always liked the thought that masks are used only when it's needed to fake being someone else (like Haku pretended to be Fog's whatever secret organisation but he had a mask stashed. Maybe) and there isn't any uniform (which wouldn't go along with whole super secret organisation schtick) (I know Tenzo looked cute in Sai-styled uniform but no.) so essentially there is nothing differentiating root from literally anyone, they're this good. Paranoïa fuel.
They can even wear crests on their backs owo and nobody would spot, would they eheheh
Blanks is an interesting name for that! Though I would imagine that they are painted to blend in, otherwise they'd stick out a bit xD;;
(I'll have to ignore second part of message here because despite what fandom and ship I'm in, I'm super sensitive about eye damage orz apologies)

ships bias for iruka !
also from @writelives thank you besties <3
Tumblr media
i believe iruka deserves to be so fucking in love that it astounds even himself. i want him to learn that he has an ever larger capacity for love than he ever thought ( and he already knew he could love a lot ) , to surprise himself with how elated he can be in love. so i have a lot on here because he deserves it <3 also i write him as gay, so that is reflected in these ships!
iruka & kakashi
its about accidentally colliding over your shared care for a kid who desperately needs an adult in his life and both trying to be that person. its about butting heads, misunderstanding each other and the vastly different circumstances you come from, and working through that as you see you're both just trying to hold it together, to care for the kids around you and keep yourselves afloat, in this miserable, fucked up world. it's about finding solace in another person that you'd never expect to have anything in common with, but with time it turns natural and loving and safe. its about healing each other's wounds and working to heal your own in quiet, understanding company.
iruka & obito
this is a sleeper fave of mine. it can have a bunch of flavors. a post-canon "healing alongside someone who is patient and kind and warm" vibes. a missing-nin au where its a "the state hurts children and i will no longer be part of the cycle of violence, so lets stop this together" vibe. an au where obito raises naruto and it has a "falling for my son's kindergarten teacher because his smile is beautiful when he looks at me" vibe. i see two people who are determined to make a change, who see the world for how it harms the vulnerable and the young, and who finally see someone who understands that, who is committed to that change, in each other. also something something an uchiha & a senju kissing is very good to me ( i hc iruka is a descendant of hashirama )
iruka & gai
another secret menu ship. they are both such kind and openly emotional, loving people. iruka is a little more grounded, a little quieter than gai in how he shows affection, but i think gai's loudness, his unabashedness pulls iruka out of his shell. there is so much laughter and fondness between them, so much open affection it makes iruka want to cry with pure joy. gai is someone who's heart matches iruka's own; filled to the brim, overflowing. gai also cares so deeply for his students, and lets that love and care drive him, and iruka respects that so immensely. iruka trusts his team is in good hands from day one and respects gai as a teacher and a leader.
iruka & yamato/tenzo
i like this one because i feel like iruka is a little exasperated with the switch in squad leaders, because, god, he's only just decided kakashi can handle not getting naruto killed and now he has to adjust to this new person who is apparently his own age and he has never met before? and its sorta a "iruka hovers relentlessly during naruto's training because he's a little suspicious of yamato and they form an uneasy acquaintanceship" to finding they like each other's company, quite a bit. they're both a little softer, and i like ships where iruka, so full to the brim with emotion, helps bring that emotion out in his partner as well, which i think fits them well.
iruka & shisui
i have no supporting evidence for this. i just think they're neat and i hc them to be the same age so 👀 also my uchiha & senju kissing agenda once again.
bonus:
iruka & anyone who loves him and is gentle with his heart. it is so big yet so fragile just love him and hold him tenderly, please. i adore cross-over ships. i adore oc and canon ships. he is my most beloved and he deserves to be loved so much. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Hello! If you are still taking little prompts i would LOVE to know what was goin on in obitos head when kakashi was like 'hahaha come to my home use my shower have a drink maybe teehee' in kamui blues... xoxooxoxo
This is less cracky than you might have been expecting, anon, but I hope you still enjoy it!
Kamui Blues prompt request #14 (previous requests), Obito's PoV of Chapter 6, the scene in Kakashi's apartment, including his reaction to hearing "Companion" for the first time. t-rated, 2034 words.
Obito brushed the wet fog from the glass with his pale, bare hand, and stared at his reflection in the mirror of Kakashi’s bathroom.
He’d been distracted a moment before, by someone knocking on Kakashi’s door and chatting to him, and hearing the sentence are you fucking Tenzo before Kakashi had slammed the door on the intruder, and come on, Kakashi, surely you would have mentioned something like that to your roommate who you spend half your days with — and caught up with his irritation, he’d barely registered throwing on these clothes that Kakashi had left for him, until he reached the tough green material at the bottom of the pile.
Konoha’s shinobi flak jacket.
He’d never worn this before. Obviously not, when he’d spent one day as a Chunin before the world all went to shit.
He didn’t need to wear it. Kakashi had obviously given it to him as a joke. Kakashi’s Kamui buddy was nothing like a shinobi from this hidden village, and Kakashi would find it amusing to see his neighbour dressed up in such an outlandish costume.
He didn’t need to put it on. He could just walk out of the bathroom and throw it on the floor and make some offhanded complaint about Kakashi wanting him to overheat.
Kakashi’s clothes didn’t fit Obito properly — they were too tight around the chest and shoulders and too long in the arms, stupid lanky gorgeous body that Kakashi had — but the flak jacket was naturally loose, and it fit fine as Obito pulled his arms through.
Now he stared at himself, his ugly scars not as sharp in the blurry shimmer of the half-misted glass, and he saw…
For a moment, he saw a double life. A world where Obito had arrived in time to stop Rin’s self-sacrifice, and Kakashi had never revealed how terrible this world was, neither to Obito nor himself. Obito would have come back to Konoha with them both. He would have grown up with Kakashi and Rin over many years, not forced by blood-soaked skin to become an adult at the age of fourteen. He would have been playful with Rin, teased her and hugged her and gleefully accepted her payback. He would have insulted Kakashi, and Kakashi would have insulted him right back, and maybe without their baggage their insults would have one day transformed to something like their banter now in Kamui. At some point, Obito would have had to come to terms with being in love with both Rin and Kakashi. That inconsequential dilemma would have been the biggest point of anguish in his life.
And he would have worn this flak jacket, and he would have worn the leaf on his forehead.
But Kakashi hadn’t given him a hitai-ate today. Because, at the end of the day, this wasn’t his village. Not his home.
He grimaced, and his reflection’s scars bunched up in a harsh rictus.
Thinking about this was as moronic as it was painful. It was good that the world had revealed itself, because now he knew that he had to fix it. He had a chance to make a new history and a new future. That was the only path forward. There was no point imagining what might have been.
He put his mask back on, took one last look at himself (and yes: with orange swirling across his face, this costume was blatantly ridiculous), and went out to Kakashi.
Disoriented from his thoughts, he physically reacted to Kakashi’s offhanded comment that now people thought the two of them might be fucking. (Hah. Only possible in his final dream, maybe.) He sat on the floor against Kakashi’s bed, and maybe Kakashi noticed that his neighbour was a little unsettled, because he also seemed oddly awkward around Obito.
But then Kakashi pulled out a bottle of sake and sat next to him, so much closer than he’d ever sat in Kamui, and they poured for each-other, and Kakashi asked Obito about the latest novel he’d been reading, and Obito was effectively distracted, as the taste of nice alcohol and high-quality literature tended to do for him.
He talked, and Kakashi listened and drank, and the sun began to set.
He did love the books that Kakashi had picked out for him. But maybe even more than the books themselves, he loved that Kakashi seemed to enjoy hearing Obito talk about them, even if Kakashi himself couldn’t give a shit about language or aesthetics or emotional symbolism. Because that meant he liked listening to Obito himself, not just the content. He and Kakashi were friends now, in a way they’d never truly been as children when nearly all their conversations had been arguments. Kakashi did give him the time of day now.
Except that the alcohol seemed to have made Kakashi a little more relaxed than usual. His eye was closed and he was slouching against the bed.
So, not always giving him the time of day, apparently.
Obito said, “And in her third novel, Somedo understands the distinction between the profane and the profound, even if the characters themselves do not,” and glared at Kakashi, who still hadn’t spoken or moved from his resting position in several minutes, “and now you’re not even listening again, you jerk.”
But Kakashi satisfactorily repeated what Obito had just said, proving that he was, indeed, awake.
And then Kakashi opened his eye, looking at him from under his lashes, and his grey eye and silver hair glimmered golden from the bath of evening sunlight, and…
Was this world hell? It surely must be, but it was the most exquisite, breathtaking torture Obito had ever experienced.
Kakashi was gorgeous. Kakashi was ethereal. He was hyperreal, popping from his bedroom floor like some religious object cast in holy light. Obito wanted to worship him. Obito wanted to kiss him. Oh, fuck, he wanted to kiss him so much; just rip his own mask off and lean across the tiny gap between them and, sure, leave Kakashi’s mask on because he surely wouldn’t want to reveal himself, but that was fine; press his lips against the fabric and clutch the back of Kakashi’s neck and hold his divine body close; breathe in his scent that he sometimes caught when they sparred together…
He forced this train of thought snap-shut.
What the fuck was wrong with him? He was letting his mind go off on insane tangents this evening. It was probably the new location, being out in the world with Kakashi, not just in Kamui; but it was pathetic. It was pointless to even fantasise about kissing Kakashi. He needed to get a hold of himself.
And now he’d been staring at Kakashi for too long, obvious even with a mask.
Obito swallowed, cleared his throat. Distraction. Sake was a distraction.
The bottle was empty, but Kakashi guided him to the new sake bottle on the bench along the window of his apartment, and there Obito blinked, his musings in the bathroom coming back to slap him in the face when he saw the photo of Team Minato staring back at him, next to a photo of Kakashi’s Team Seven: his three students as Genin, and Kakashi beaming above them.
His new team, Kakashi said, and his old team.
Well, yes. The symmetry was striking.
Obito picked up both photos and brought them back to Kakashi. It seemed he was destined to think about the past tonight, dressed in this costume of what could have been, and he wanted to bring Kakashi’s thoughts in sync.
And maybe he wanted to hear Kakashi say some nice things about a long-dead boy who had changed him at Kannabi bridge.
Kakashi didn’t let him down, even though it seemed at first as though he might.
Kakashi, indeed, gave Obito’s past self the biggest compliment he’d ever received.
He wasn’t that person anymore. But maybe there was hope for Obito’s dream.
“And you’re comparing your previous self to the Yondaime,” Obito prompted, pointing at Minato, feeling generous. Wanting to hear Kakashi talk about himself with pride, sharing all the progress that Sakura and Naruto had made recently.
“No,” Kakashi said quickly, and his body tensed, closing off, shoulders rounding as if in defence. “That’s where the comparison ends. I’m nothing like Sensei. Sensei could actually teach. Sensei wouldn’t have let his team fall apart for any reason other than their deaths.”
Oh, and wasn’t that a stupid comment Obito had made. Of course Kakashi was going to take any chance to criticise himself. Kakashi was the only person who couldn’t see how incredible he was.
And, as Kakashi sat glumly with the photos of his two teams, Obito noticed something startling.
Somewhere, over the last few weeks or months, all his anger for Kakashi had disappeared.
He didn’t blame Kakashi for revealing the world’s awfulness anymore. Indeed, it seemed ridiculous that he had ever blamed him. He’d known for many years that Kakashi had never intended to kill Rin; he’d been a victim of circumstance just as she had. Kakashi had been broken irreparably by his action. And why had Obito celebrated that? How could he have laughed at Kakashi’s pain in the past? How could he have watched Kakashi’s grief stuck against his skin thicker than the mask against his face and felt triumphant that Kakashi was broken?
Obito was revolted with himself.
This was why Infinite Tsukuyomi needed to happen: Kakashi needed to have his perfect dream. Kakashi wouldn’t feel pain in his dream. Kakashi would have everything he had ever desired.
In this moment, Obito wanted to help him so much that it was painful. And this sort of pain came with an odd déjà vu of familiarity that he couldn’t quite place, until he wound back the years and saw Kakashi laid out on the floor in front of a nin so much larger than him, eye slashed deep, and felt that same certainty that he would kill and die to save him.
Obito turned away as Kakashi sipped more sake, and he tried to keep his breathing even, tried not to spew out some jumbled mess about how Kakashi shouldn’t discredit himself when he was the only part of the world that was worthwhile, and when he turned back Kakashi had pulled himself together, now wearing a painfully fake smile that he often used around others but only rarely around Obito.
And Kakashi said, “Companion. This is becoming maudlin. Let’s turn to other topics.”
And Obito had a whole other reason to force his breath to stay steady.
Companion?
What did — what could he possibly mean by that?
When Kakashi went to collect Obito’s clothes from the washing machine, Obito held his arms with his hands and tried to be rational.
Kakashi was drunk. Kakashi didn’t understand what he was saying. Kakashi wasn’t trying to imply that his Kamui buddy was someone closer than a friend. That Kakashi thought of him as a — a partner. The person he travelled with. Someone he cared for. Someone he trusted.
A life companion.
Ludicrous. He was inferring far too much from this. This was the problem with too much literature: seeing a single word and thinking of too many possible underlying meanings. He should give up reading entirely if this is what it led him to think.
Kakashi returned with Obito’s clothes, and now he was noticeably, adorably drunk, and Obito felt a rush of deep fondness on top of everything else he had experienced this evening, this tumble of intense emotions that would make any member of his old clan nod their heads in sympathetic understanding.
He touched Kakashi’s hands to stop his silly attempt at a drying jutsu, and he didn’t even try to keep the warmth out of his voice.
He was endlessly grateful that they would have the next few weeks or months together in Kamui. Kakashi didn’t truly think of him as a companion, but Obito could play pretend in the time they had. And after everything, in Obito’s dream, maybe Kakashi could take on that role.
If only he could convince himself that Kakashi could ever feel that way for him.

"This is the last one," Sakura warned, dropping the halved pill into Tenzo's outstretched palm. The man nodded, looking considerably better than she'd anticipated after a week-long detox. It had been miserable, even with the combination of blockers and medical ninjutsu to soften the blow. Tenzo had experienced fever, chills, nausea, headaches, anxiety, and hallucinations of varying degrees over the past few days. The symptoms had become more manageable as his body started to regulate itself again, but they still showed up from time to time.
Throwing his head back, Tenzo swallowed the medicine with a gulp of water from the bottle on the table between them. He exhaled, nervousness flitting across his face. "How bad am I going to feel in eight hours?"
"Probably not much worse than you do right now." Sakura shrugged. While she'd read studies on withdrawal, she had never watched someone live through it, until now. It was fascinating, though she doubted that Tenzo would appreciate her viewing it that way. "As far as I understand it, your body should be starting to adjust to not having alcohol now. The worst of the physical stuff should be over."
Tenzo took another long drink of water, then leveled Sakura with a stare. "But," he prompted.
Sighing, Sakura gentled her voice and dipped her head. "But, we need to talk about the next steps. You have to get into therapy at T&I to deal with whatever caused the issues in the first place."
Even though they'd had this conversation multiple times, Tenzo frowned like it was a new idea. Sakura had been encouraging him to think about what life would look like after detox. It was easy to get wrapped up in the victory of the moment, but Tenzo's job required him to be at his peak, both mentally and physically. Sakura had made it abundantly clear that she had no intention of bending the rules; Tenzo would need to pass the mental evaluation before she would sign his reinstatement paperwork.
"If you want to get it over with, I could pull some strings and get you in today," Sakura suggested. She had no idea if that was true, but she couldn't imagine Ino turning the man away if Sakura asked her to take him in.
Tenzo ran shaky fingers through his dark hair and sighed. "Or, I could just talk to you about things and call it close enough."
As much as Sakura wished that things could be that simple, they weren't. She couldn't help but wonder what demons haunted Tenzo. A dozen theories had presented themselves over the past few days: it had to do with someone he'd killed or watched die. Maybe a close friend had perished because of Tenzo's decision, or he had chosen mercy when he should have executed someone and it led to greater suffering. Even if Sakura knew which of those things bothered Tenzo, she wasn't qualified to decide if he was mentally fit for duty.
"You can talk to me about anything, but I can't clear your psych eval." Sakura resisted the urge to reach across the table and touch Tenzo's hand. Though they'd grown closer over the past couple of weeks, it was still an awkward balancing act between being friends and being too familiar.
Tenzo offered a half grin that only lifted the left side of his mouth. "Or, you could leave that part out of my file, and nobody has to know."
The hopefulness in the man's voice tugged at Sakura's heartstrings, but she shook her head. "The fact that you don't want to go only convinces me that you need to go. Ino is the best at this sort of thing; she can help get it all sorted out."
If the words hurt Tenzo, he gave no indication. After a moment, he nodded toward the fridge. "Are you hungry?"
Over the course of his detox, Tenzo had swung between ravenous and sickened by the smell of food. Even so, he'd been surprised and grateful that Sakura made enough meals for them to have leftovers whenever the mood struck. Her basic grocery shopping had only lasted them for a couple of days, but she'd made a second trip during the middle of the week. Most of the dishes that Sakura had cooked were simple things that could easily be reheated, but it had done the trick of getting them through the worst of it.
Shaking her head to indicate that she wasn't hungry, Sakura rose from the table. She moved toward the living room, leaving Tenzo to scrounge around in the cabinets and fridge. Yawning, Sakura flopped onto the couch. The past couple of weeks had been interesting, exhausting and eye-opening all at once. She glanced at Tenzo from the corner of her eye as he warmed some leftovers in the microwave. Thinking of him as Tenzo instead of Yamato was easier now, but it still came as a shock whenever she stopped long enough to dwell on it.
Sakura had known Tenzo for the better part of five years, but the persona that he showed the rest of the world had fallen away over the past week. She'd gotten used to seeing him in sweatpants and t-shirts with his brown hair sticking up in every direction from not having his head protector to hold it back. Tenzo spoke softer, as well. The commanding tone of his voice had disappeared, morphing into something gentler that made Sakura wonder what he'd been like before Anbu.
Despite the changes that she'd seen, Sakura couldn't help but feel that Tenzo still wore a mask with her. Sometimes, she wondered if he remembered how to take it off, but they had gotten to know each other better. Whenever Tenzo felt well enough, he and Sakura spent hours talking about everything under the sun, though she had a feeling that most of the conversations only brushed the surface of his true thoughts. They also watched television, read, played cards, and did anything they could to keep his mind off of the discomfort in his body.
Most of the time, Sakura had watched and helped out where she could. She had half a dozen new theories on how chakra could aid detox and recovery, but she needed time to finish developing them. There had been space to make a few notes here and there, but the days had mostly passed in a blur.
Tenzo came to the living room with a bowl in hand and settled on the couch next to Sakura. "You should probably head home if you're going. It's getting late," he observed, voice carefully neutral.
Raising a hand to cover the yawn that she couldn't stop, Sakura managed a nervous laugh. "Are you sure you're going to be okay?"
"Yup." Tenzo flashed a self conscious smile. "We both know I'm going to fall asleep soon anyway."
The medication always made Tenzo drowsy, usually dragging him under within an hour or so of taking it. They had timed the final dose for after dinner so that Tenzo would be able to go to bed not long after, and hopefully get a full night's sleep. Then, in the morning, he could start navigating his new normal without the pills. Though the timing should work out perfectly, Sakura couldn't help but feel like it all sounded too easy.
Sakura fought down another yawn as she nodded. "I know, but I could stay one more night if you think it would help."
"You're exhausted, and rightfully so," Tenzo argued, bumping Sakura's shoulder with his before taking another bite of the rice and vegetable. "I'm just going to sleep anyway, so you should go home and get some rest."
The idea of spending the night in her own bed was so tempting that Sakura could hardly think straight. She'd been crashing on Tenzo's couch so that she could keep an eye on him, which meant sleeping lightly enough to check on the man throughout the night, especially in the first couple of days. A full eight hours or more of sleep sounded like heaven. Sakura dipped her head. "Fine, but you know where to find me if you need anything."
Tenzo chewed and nodded in silence, so Sakura continued to the more difficult part of her plan. "And, you'll come see me first thing in the morning so we can go over to Intelligence?"
Rubbing a free hand over his face, Tenzo sighed without meeting Sakura's gaze. "I guess." She poked his side until he conceded and squirmed away. "Yeah, first thing in the morning, if that's what it takes to get me reinstated."
Nodding, Sakura stood and stretched, her tired muscles and joints popping and creaking with the movement. Pulling her already packed bag over one shoulder, she walked toward the door. Tenzo rose and walked to the kitchen to put his bowl in the sink, then joined Sakura as she pulled on her sandals. It felt strange to be leaving, even though she'd known it was coming. Pausing, Sakura toyed with the strap of her bag. "You're sure, sure?"
Tenzo's lips quirked into an almost smile. "Sure sure."
"Fine," Sakura answered, surprised at her reluctance to walk away now that the time had come. "Hang in there, it'll get better."
"I know." Tenzo's words were soft, and his expression was a mix of sheepish stubbornness that Sakura had come to recognize lately. "Thanks."
Sakura stepped forward to wrap Tenzo in a hug, startling them both. For a second, the man stood there dumbfounded. Then, his arms closed around her, probably more out of instinct than anything else. She stayed there long enough to feel him relax before pulling back. "Take care of yourself, okay?"
A soft pink colored Tenzo's cheeks as he laughed. "I will. I'll see you tomorrow."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Exhaustion dragged at Sakura as she dropped her bag onto the kitchen table. She wanted to sit down and outline her theories on detox and recovery, but her brain felt too fuzzy to focus. Sakura hadn't slept decently since the first night that Tenzo had shown up at her apartment over a week ago. As a doctor, she could function with next to no sleep for a little while, but now that the crisis was over, her body demanded proper rest.
Leaving her notebook in her bag, Sakura went to the bathroom and turned on the shower. She tossed her clothes into the hamper and stepped under the spray as soon as it had time to warm up. The heat eased the tension that Sakura hadn't recognized in her shoulders and neck. She dropped her head forward, letting the water course down her back. Sakura could have lingered in the shower until it turned cold, but her body needed sleep.
As tempting as a long shower was, Sakura was too tired to enjoy it. She washed quickly, turned the water off, then wrapped a towel around body and twisted a second one around her hair. Sakura knew that she should take the time to moisturize, lotion her body, and dry her hair, but she couldn't be bothered. A quick scrub would have to be enough for tonight. After combing through the damp tresses with her fingers, Sakura pulled them into a loose, messy bun at the base of her neck.
Leaving the bathroom behind, Sakura padded into her bedroom. The opened windows provided enough moonlight for her to see her dresser on one side of the room. She dug through the middle drawer to find her favorite pair of pajama pants. The soft purple fabric kept her warm without making her sweaty under the blankets. Sakura wished that she'd bought more of them. Pairing the pants with a black cami, she climbed into bed with a happy sigh.
Almost as soon as Sakura closed her eyes, Tenzo nagged at the back of her mind. She couldn't do anything for him tonight; he'd either survive without the medicine or fall back into the same habits that he'd been struggling with. As much as she wanted to fix everything, most of it relied on him. Sakura had done what she could, and she'd make sure that Ino took care of him in the morning, that was all she could do.
As she waited for sleep to find her, Sakura tried to imagine what Ino might be like as a therapist. The woman would probably be far too nosy and pushy, but she'd get results. Ino always managed to drag out whatever secrets Sakura wanted to keep hidden. She'd gotten her to talk about Sasuke, just like Tenzo had. The two of them might become fast friends. Ino was certainly likable enough, and Tenzo was coming out of his shell. She'd seen flashes of a playful personality beneath his serious demeanor.
Grinning at the thought of Ino and Tenzo gossiping over coffee like old friends, Sakura fell asleep. Her thoughts jumbled together in a nonsensical dream where Tenzo tried to perfect some yoga stance while Ino complained that he was crushing the flowers she'd just planted on the rooftop garden. Sakura sat beneath the shadow of an umbrella covered table, watching the pair of them with amusement as she sipped hot tea from the mug between her hands.
Noise broke through the whisper of wind and bird chatter. Ino's voice reprimanded Tenzo while he chuckled and made minor adjustments to where he stood. Sakura frowned, wondering why neither of them turned toward the vague sound niggling at the edges of the room. She let her eyes sweep across the rooftop, searching for the source of the gentle knocking. Tenzo laughed at something Ino said as Sakura rose from her seat. The pair didn't seem to notice when the sound returned, louder than before.
The floral scented air scattered with the next breeze, throwing Sakura back into the shadows of her room. Her sleep numbed mind struggled to make sense of the world as her voice answered automatically. "Hello?"
"Couldn't sleep." The mumbled words pulled at Sakura's heart as she rubbed exhaustion from her eyes. Moonlight shone on the man in the doorway as he toyed with the sleeve of his shirt. The appearance and words were familiar after the last couple of weeks. The almost palpable anxiety was part of the detox process. Except, Sakura had been there for the others. This time, Tenzo was alone.
"Nightmares?" Sakura asked, eyes adjusting to the darkness. Tenzo's hands shook when he stopped fidgeting long enough to press one against the center of his chest. His shallow breath hissed into his lungs like a wheeze, a familiar sound. "Panic attack?"
Tenzo exhaled hard, fingers tightening to pull his sweatshirt away from his body like it was crowding him. "I can't breathe," he gasped.
Pushing the blankets off, Sakura climbed out of bed. "Yes you can," she coaxed. "If you couldn't breathe, you couldn't talk. Look at me."
As Sakura reached Tenzo, his brown eyes flicked to her face, then focused on her eyes. He'd had more than one anxiety attack that left him gasping for air during the course of his detox. He and Sakura had come up with dozens of grounding techniques to help take the edge off. Ironically, the simplest had been focusing on her. Tenzo's hands came to rest on Sakura's shoulders, warm against her bare skin, and she wrapped her fingers around his wrists.
"Follow my breath," Sakura encouraged, exaggerating each inhale and exhale to make them more obvious. She repeated the words twice before Tenzo's chest started to rise and fall with hers. Trailing her thumb along the underside of his right wrist to provide another anchor to reality, Sakura nodded. Tenzo's hands curled, nails pressing into Sakura's skin, but his next inhale came easier. "Good."
The glazed expression receded from Tenzo's eyes and his grip relaxed, but he didn't let go. He breathed Sakura's name, voice strangled despite the fading panic. She squeezed, stepping closer. "I'm here."
Tenzo's shoulders relaxed, and his head tipped forward with relief. For a moment, all that Sakura could see was the intensity of his gaze. She lifted her chin, refusing to break the contact that helped pull him back from the brink. Tenzo's next breath warmed her cheek as he closed his eyes. "I'm sorry," he murmured, releasing Sakura's shoulders.
"You've got nothing to apologize for." Letting her hands fall away from Tenzo's wrists, Sakura chuckled. Her lungs felt too small, like the oxygen in the room couldn't fill them as much as she needed it to. "Though, I'd like to know why you were knocking on my bedroom, as opposed to the front door, like a normal person."
Despite the poor lighting, Sakura saw a warm blush spread across Tenzo's cheeks as he shrugged. "You must not have heard it the first time, and I didn't want to cause a scene. So, I picked the lock."
Sakura raised one eyebrow toward the ceiling. "What if I had set up traps or threw a kunai at you?"
"I would have avoided it." Tenzo shrugged, running a hand through his hair.
"Of course you would have, Mr. Anbu Captain," Sakura teased, eliciting an almost grin from Tenzo. She glanced at the clock on the nightstand, surprised to find that it was shortly after three. The medicine would have worn off a couple hours ago, so it was a good sign that he'd lasted a little while without it.
Tenzo offered a half smile as an apology, but Sakura saw the exhaustion behind his gaze. She stared up at him for a long moment, then nodded behind her. "Come to bed?"
The man's visible double take prompted a deep laugh from Sakura. "There's still a couple of hours before dawn, and we could both use more sleep. Do you think you'd be able to?"
"Maybe," Tenzo shrugged, cutting his eyes toward the still tidy linens with a deeper flush coloring his cheeks. "I don't know."
Climbing back into bed, Sakura pulled the blankets across her lap and fought down a yawn. "Come on. I promise I won't bite, and I'm not sleeping on the couch again."
"I can sleep on the couch," Tenzo insisted. He shook his head while gesturing at the bed. "This would be too weird."
"It's no weirder than the past three days. Is it Tenzo?" Sakura accentuated the man's name to remind him how much things had changed between them. Reaching out, she grabbed Tenzo's arm and pulled. He stumbled forward two steps, nearly fell, then caught himself on the headboard with one hand. "If it freaks you out, you can sleep on top of the blankets. But, I promise this is more comfortable than crashing on the couch."
For two heartbeats, Tenzo didn't move. Sakura watched the emotions play across his face, wondering if she'd pushed too far. Despite having spent almost a week living together, this was something new, something foreign. Sakura had checked on Tenzo throughout the nights or slept on the couch as the medicine lulled his mind into unconsciousness, but this was actively helping him relax.
"There's a blanket at the foot of the bed, if you need it," Sakura pointed out, watching Tenzo with a mixture of gentleness and amusement.
Pushing himself away from the headboard, Tenzo reached for the dark blue throw. Sakura breathed a sigh of relief when he moved to the other side of the bed and sat down. She rolled over to face him as he leaned back, but almost immediately, Tenzo sat up. "Just relax." Sakura rested one hand in the center of his chest and guided him toward the pillows. "Lie back."
Tenzo sank onto the extra pillows and blew out a breath, body stiff. The man's jaw clenched around the awkwardness of their situation. Sakura wasn't sure if he'd welcome physical contact, but she brushed her fingers against the back of Tenzo's hand anyway. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"Not really," Tenzo answered, not quite pulling away from the touch, but not reaching for either. "It was just a panic attack."
Sakura hummed in understanding, she'd never wanted to talk about them either. "Can I do anything specific to help you sleep?"
When Tenzo shook his head the way she'd expected, Sakura curled up beneath the blanket and yawned. "Okay, well, I'm here if you think of anything."
As much as Sakura tried to make herself available, she couldn't keep her eyes open. The silence and darkness dragged her back toward sleep. As Sakura fell into the blackness, a single thought surfaced: hopefully, Tenzo would follow.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunlight irritated Tenzo's eyelids until they slitted open to reveal unfamiliar grey walls around him. He blinked, taking several long seconds to remember that he'd fallen asleep in Sakura's apartment. Not just in her apartment, but in her bed, his brain supplied helpfully. The woman's warmth nestled against his left hip, three layers of blankets between them. Sakura had cocooned beneath the covers, pink hair barely visible above them.
Rather than risk waking the woman up by climbing out of bed, Tenzo looked around the small room more fully in the morning light. The subdued colors seemed at odds with the vibrancy that was Sakura. The furniture was plain and slightly battered, like she'd owned it as a child or picked it up second hand. There were a few splashes of color around the room, but it felt sterile compared to what he'd expected. A picture of Team Kakashi sat on the dresser, three far too innocent faces staring out of the frame.
A more recent photo of Team Seven sat beside the first, but Sasuke was missing from this one. Instead, Naruto grinned over a bowl of ramen while Sakura beamed at his side. Sai sat next to them with a half smile on his lips that could have meant anything. Kakashi stood behind the three, eye smiling. In the corner of the frame, Tenzo stared down at a piece of paper in his hand. He had no idea when the picture had been taken or who had snapped it, but he was certain that he'd been left holding the bill.
Tenzo almost chuckled at the image, but stopped himself short when he remembered where he was. His mirth died further at the reminder that in just a few short hours, he would be submitting himself to the Intelligence division. Technically, Anbu was part of T&I, or at least a close cousin who worked hand in hand with it. Anytime a mission required for someone to be taken alive, they were turned over for interrogation. None of the Anbu liked to think about what went on behind closed doors, but they all had their suspicions.
And now, I'm going to find out willingly. Tenzo shuddered and extracted himself from the single blanket that he'd used. Sakura mumbled something that he couldn't catch then curled tighter in her cocoon. Tenzo crossed to the small bathroom and examined his reflection in the mirror. His eyes were clearer than they'd been in a long time, but red spidered across the whites in places. He turned the water on and raised a handful to his mouth, swishing it around to remove the cottony sleep taste from his tongue.
Dozens of bottles lined Sakura's counter, most with names that Tenzo didn't understand even after reading them. He didn't linger long, though. For some reason, examining this part of Sakura's life felt like an invasion. He wondered if the woman had felt the same way in his apartment, or if she took it stride better than he had. She'd spent several days there and never raised a question about his belongings.
Shrugging off the thought for another time, Tenzo crept out of the bedroom and into the rest of the apartment. He headed for the kitchen out of habit. A quick rummage through the cabinets revealed that Sakura didn't have any tea that might take the edge off the morning. He filled a glass with water instead and took a drink. As Tenzo did so, he heard soft footfalls on the tile behind him. Turning, he found a bleary eyed, pink haired mess.
Sakura yawned as she stepped past Tenzo to reach for the coffee. "Did you get any sleep?"
"Some," Tenzo conceded with the dip of his chin. He had fallen into a fitful sleep some time after Sakura did, plagued by vague nightmares that he couldn't remember. That was preferable to the alternative, at least. "You?"
"Some," Sakura mimicked, stifling a yawn. She ran a hand through her unruly tresses which had pulled loose from her ponytail to stick out in every direction, then frowned. "What are you staring at?"
Tenzo realized that he'd spent too long trying to figure out why Sakura looked different. He finally settled on the strands of pink that were more fluffy and less sleek than usual. He averted his eyes with a shrug. "Nothing."
Grumbling under her breath, Sakura stretched her arms above her head until the soft pop of bone echoed in the room. The sleeveless top that she wore rode up to reveal a smooth expanse of toned muscle across her stomach. Tenzo frowned at the painful noise. "That doesn't sound healthy."
"That's an old wives tale." Sakura tugged her clothing back into position with an eye roll. "Popping your joints is perfectly safe as long as you don't overstrain them."
Tenzo shrugged and took another sip of his drink. "Sure, if you say so."
"I do say so," Sakura returned, pushing past Tenzo to rummage around the cabinets. She produced a packet of oatmeal from one of the shelves, then returned it with a grimace. The refrigerator offered even less, and the woman huffed out a sigh. "I need to go shopping."
"I could pick something up. I wanted to go home and change anyway." Tenzo indicated his sweatpants and t-shirt. He wasn't sure what a person was supposed to wear to counseling, but he knew that it wasn't this.
Sakura appraised Tenzo over the mug that she'd lifted from another shelf. "You'll come back? I won't have to chase you down this time?"
Tenzo flashed a grin as if he hadn't just been considering skipping therapy all together. "I'll come back. I promise."
After another couple of seconds of scrutiny, Sakura nodded. "Alright. I'll see you in about an hour."
--------------------------------------------
An hour and a half later, Tenzo and Sakura stood together outside the Intelligence building. He'd changed into jeans and a t-shirt, at least in part to avoid drawing attention to himself. Sakura had been adamant that Tenzo was off duty until he got cleared by psych. The uniform only served to remind him that he was no longer Anbu; he wasn't even a pretend jonin of Konoha. It had been so long since Tenzo dressed as himself that he wasn't sure what that meant any longer.
When Tenzo had arrived back at Sakura's apartment, a bag of muffins in one hand and coffee in the other, the woman had transformed back into someone that he knew. Her wild hair had been tamed into straight pink tresses that framed her face, and the comfort of her pajamas exchanged for the familiar black leggings and red dress. Neither of them spoke about the walls that they'd knocked down the previous night, or the ease with which they rebuilt them in the morning.
"It's going to be fine," Sakura decided, her voice filled with the confidence of someone who wasn't about to have their mind poked and prodded. "This is going to be fine."
Tenzo nodded without speaking, throat too tight to let the words slip out anyway. He followed Sakura into the cool dimness of the reception area and tried to still the beating of his heart. A young man sat at a desk behind a glass enclosure, idly reading a scroll and transcribing notes into a computer terminal. His gaze slid over the pair as he rolled the scroll closed with a soft snap. When Sakura approached the desk, the man's lips twisted into an expression that made Tenzo fearful for his safety.
Sakura's sickly sweet smile as she met the man's gaze made Tenzo nearly as nervous. "We're here to see Yamanaka-san," she said as a way of greeting. Tenzo frowned at the haughty tone her voice had taken.
The receptionist scanned the ledger in front of him as if looking for their names, then frowned. "Do you have an appointment?"
Sakura's chuckle sounded anything but friendly as she stalked toward the glass cubicle. The man didn't flinch as he gazed up at her, half smile on his lips. Tenzo wasn't sure if the boy had a death wish, or if honestly didn't know who Sakura was. Imagining the latter was difficult considering her notoriety after the war.
Resting her forearms on the ledge above the man's desk, Sakura leaned forward to level him with a glare. "I don't have an appointment, and we both know that it doesn't matter."
The man's eyes flicked toward Sakura's chest before returning to her face. Tenzo didn't need to fake the growl in his voice when he moved closer to Sakura's side and spoke. "Is Yamanaka-san available or not?"
A sharp peal of laughter made Tenzo's hand ball into a fist at his side. Sakura dropped her arm to brush her fingers against Tenzo's side as a warning to calm down. The chunin eyed them for a moment, then inclined his head. "I'll page her. Have a seat while you wait."
The cheap wood and plastic squeaked as Tenzo settled into a chair that couldn't have been more uncomfortable if it tried. Sakura perched on the edge of hers, as tense as he was. Tenzo wondered why. The woman's legs bounced on the balls of her feet as she alternated her attention between the man behind the counter and the doorway that led deeper into the building. Across the room, the receptionist murmured into the telephone receiver at his desk. Then, he ignored them all together.
Tenzo didn't try to break the silence as he watched Sakura in his peripheral vision. He wondered if she knew the man behind the desk, if she came here for counseling after difficult missions. The thought hadn't crossed his mind until they stepped into the building. Tenzo never felt an inclination to discuss what happened as a part of his job; it went against everything expected of shinobi. He had assumed that everyone else operated under a similar ideology.
From their earliest training, ninja and Anbu were expected to divorce themselves from the emotion of their lives. The tools wielded by Konoha didn't need human limitations; fear and love were more deadly than any weapon in the midst of battle. Tenzo had seen it time and time again: a teammate throwing themselves into harm's way when they should have held back. Naruto had done it more often than Tenzo cared to recount, living through sheer stubbornness it seemed. That, and the nine tails healing chakra. But normal shinobi didn't have that luxury; they needed cool, unswerving logic.
The careful balance between death and life was all that Tenzo had ever known. He'd been in the black ops since he was practically a child, but Sakura had been afforded different opportunities. When Tenzo had taken over leading Team Seven, Kakashi had filled him in on the background of each shinobi. He'd learned more with reconnaissance of his own. Sakura's parents were civilians, her father was a merchant, and her mother stayed home to look after the house. There had been no reason for Sakura to choose the shinobi lifestyle. Tenzo wondered what had drawn the woman to enter the ninja academy, but he hadn't asked. It seemed too personal.
Even now, Sakura spent most of her time inside the village in her role as a medic. The hospital couldn't afford to be without her for long, especially after Tsunade and Shizune left. Sakura could have opted to be taken off the mission roster entirely if she wanted. No one would call it cowardice to admit that she was better suited for life in Konoha. Except for Sakura. The woman had stood side by side with people like Naruto, Sasuke, and Kakashi. Tenzo doubted that she would let anyone take a risk that she wasn't willing to shoulder herself.
Before Tenzo could finish organizing his thoughts, the doorway beside the reception area opened and Yamanaka Ino swept into the room. Seafoam blue eyes slid past the receptionist with a look of reprimand, then settled on Sakura. Surprise sparked in her face at finding Tenzo next to her, but the woman covered it quickly. She held the door open with her body and offered a tight smile. "Sakura, Yamato-san," the girl bowed. "If you'll come with me, please."
Ino obviously hadn't known to expect them, and Tenzo wasn't sure if he felt relieved or worried that Sakura hadn't prepared her for the meeting. He rose mechanically from the chair and followed the women through the reception area. Blowing out a nervous breath, Tenzo tried not to think about how the door shutting behind him felt like a trap closing around his neck. Several rooms and hallways branched off the main passage, but Ino led them through the labyrinth without getting sidetracked or attempting to make small talk.
The blond showed Sakura and Tenzo to an office that was less intimidating than he'd expected. Warm sunlight slanted through the shade that were partially drawn to give the impression of privacy while making the space inviting. The walls were paneled with pale wood that reflected the light in a warm manner, driving shadows away. On the desk, lilac and cream flowers had been arranged in a tasteful vase, adding a floral scent to the air. The atmosphere was meant to be calming, but it left Tenzo on edge.
Indicating a low couch on one side of the room, Ino took the high backed chair across from it. A table separated the two like a too small ocean. As Tenzo stared down at the pale blue fabric, he fought the urge to laugh this meeting off as a big mistake. He didn't think either of the women would try to stop him from leaving if he went for the door. Even if they did, he was stronger than both of them. Sakura settled on one side of the couch and gazed up with an expectant look. Tenzo swallowed the lump in his throat and lowered himself beside her.
Ino crossed her legs at the knee, tapping one foot in the air to some beat that only she heard. She picked up a notebook and pen that were waiting on the side table, then nodded. "So, what can I do for you?"
Tenzo's heart rate increased, drawing his attention to the soft pulse of blood in his temples and roar in his ears. He couldn't have spoken, even if he wanted to. After the silence stretched for an uncomfortable minute, Sakura broke it. "You remember when I told you I needed psych evaluations on Anbu?"
Ino's eyebrows rose before she reined in her surprise at finding out that Tenzo was in Anbu. Smoothing the emotion from her face, she inclined her head. "Yeah, but you left out the part where you drag them to my office personally."
Sakura chuckled, a light shade of pink coloring her cheeks. The sound eased some of the tension in Tenzo's shoulder, as did the way her green eyes cut toward him with an encouraging smile. "Only the difficult ones," Sakura teased. As the soft laughter died down, she continued. "Yamato has been struggling with—"
"Let me stop you there," Ino interrupted, holding up a hand. Her gentle smile focused on Sakura. "It's obvious that you want to fix whatever this is, but you can't."
Tenzo felt Sakura tense beside him as she opened her mouth to argue. Ino spoke before she could get the words out. "If I brought you a patient and told you all of their symptoms, would you still examine them?" The woman waited for Sakura's lips to compress into a thin line as she nodded, then continued. "This is no different."
Turquoise eyes met Tenzo's, and his stomach dropped. Despite the fear that made his body tense in preparation for an attack, he knew that Ino was right; Sakura could only carry him so far. The idea of reliving all the things that he'd been trying to hide for so long made him nauseated. He couldn't imagine going through it without having something to take the edge off, even after the progress that he'd made.
The room blurred at the edges, shrinking to the brilliance of Ino's eyes and the sharpness in her gaze. Tenzo felt like he was drowning; he couldn't draw a full breath. Something fluttered against his hand, light and insistent enough to draw his attention. Gazing down, he stared at Sakura's fingers brushing against his then pulling back like frightened fish. Tenzo exhaled.
Ino frowned at the movement, but didn't draw any attention to it. Instead, she stayed focused on Tenzo. "If you want to complete your evaluation, I can make some time now. Then, I'll clear you for active duty, or we can discuss any additional requirements. Is that something you're interested in?"
Staring resolutely forward, Tenzo nodded.

Naruto fic idea. Don't know if I'll write it... because I have a shot ton of other fics in the works that I'm procrastinating against finishing because DEPRESSION. So let me know what you guys think of the idea that's been bouncing around in my head.
Let me set the scene. The Hidden Leaf Village. Itatchi has just killed the Uchiha clan.
Instead of traumatizing Sasuke and setting him up to get stronger through revenge, he decides he can't just leave him alone in a village that had him slaughter his whole clan. Can leave him around a village that has the dastardly ROOT. So he catches Sasuke before he makes it home to see all the blood shed. Tells him that they have to leave and why. Sasuke who loves his brother more than anything, agrees.
But wait! There's more. Itatchi knows being on the run will be hard. Especially for a child Sasuke's age. Good thing he's a genius and has had his plan in the works for a while. No split second decisions here. Sasuke will need a friend. And well... the only person Sasuke ever talks about is Naruto. But he can't just kidnap the jinchuriki. Well he can. But he needs compliance and someone who can keep the kyubi in check. Tenzo fits that bill. He also has something against ROOT. It's not too hard to persuade him, although he's not crazy about abandoning the village and Kakashi. But keeping the Sharingan and Naruto out of Danzo's hands sways him. And he knows Kakashi is too loyal to the village to go missing nin. So with the one to keep the beast in check, now he needs someone to keep the child in check. And the only one Naruto listens to is Iruka. Great. Kidnapping an adult. Shouldn't be too hard.
So Itatchi leaves Sasuke hidden stage the gate and tells him to wait. Itatchi and Tenzo grab Naruto and knock him out. Then show up at Iruka's home. Tenzo holds him down while Itatchi threatens him. No time to explain the truth right now. They are cutting it close. They need to be gone long before morning. So Itatchi basically says "I'm kidnapping Naruto, I need you to play babysitter. Try anything and we kill you in front of the kid." Iruka agreed. So they meet back with Sasuke, Tenzo keeping a close eye on Iruka who keeps an eye on Tenzo who is holding Naruto.
They leave. Itatchi sets up a base camp in another village away from everyone. With enough traps and shit to rival ANBU headquarters. Iruka has chakra wire and chakra seals placed on him to keep him from using chakra. Tenzo is left on guard duty. Itatchi meets up with the Akatsuki to trade info from time to time and make some money. He does it to keep them off Naruto's trail. Spreads lies that Iruka ran with Naruto and Sasuke because Sasuke ran to him when he found out Itatchi had killed the clan. Iruka feeling the village was compromised and that no one could be trusted, ran with the two boys. The lie fits so well with Iruka's protective nature that the Hidden Leaf labels him a missing nin and sets out a bounty.
Years later, a hardened Kakashi who never left ANBU tracks them down. Well, tracks down Itatchi, planning to kill him and whoever else was with him. Figuring that Tenzo had gone with him out of hate for all the village put him through. He finds a happy family instead. Itatchi captures him, binds him like he used to do Iruka, and watches as all the love and happiness thaws Kakashi's heart. Kakashi never goes back to the village.
Itatchi (a precious ace), Tenzo (gay), Iruka (gay) and Kakashi (bi) end up in a polyamorous relationship. Sasuke gets a bunch of older brothers who are kind of like dads, not that he would admit it. Naruto gets all the dads and loves it.
The boys grow strong and take down the Akatsuki and every other trouble. Jiriya finds them, is happy his godson has a loving family. Finds the whole thing hilarious. Seals away their location in his mind, then goes and harasses the shot out of the council about having a nice afternoon with them and getting to be a fun uncle and give presents. Then skips his happy overpowered ass off to pester Tsunade before going back to research.
The end.

Okay but like. We need to talk about ppl shuffling the team assignments in Naruto. why the hell would you do that it makes no sense ?
Like seriously. Think about it for a minute.
Team 8?
A tracking team why you ask?
Aburame Shino and his kikaichū
Kikaichū are best used for tracking or ambush by draining their target of chakra (useful when tracking an escapee that needs to be captured)
Inuzuka Kiba - I mean come on. They are known for their sense of smell. Again as demonstrated by kakashi in the wave arc a great sense of smell helps tremendously in finding someone despite harsh weather conditions or distance.
With Kiba comes Akamaru and I don't need to point out how useful he is I think.
Lastly Hyuuga Hinata. I got one word for you. BYAKUGAN
Team 10
Predominantly a capture and intel gathering team
I'll start this off by pointing out that they have basically been groomed to work together! Hell its the same thing they later do in Boruto even if I personally hate Boruto, you can clearly see the mindset behind it. WHY would you , as a military dictator - and thats what the Hokage is essentially- why would you disrupt a team thats already adapt at working well together ???
Now. Akimichi Choji. The muscle because honestly they need him. Be it to protect Ino and Shikamaru or to launch an assault attack or provide bait for Ino and Shikamaru to use their Jutsus. Plain and simple. Not to mention someone needs to keep the peace between Ino and Shika sometimes.
Yamanaka Ino. Now listen I get she can be annoying. I do. But. The potential this girl has is scary. She is after all the daughter of Inoichi and like -he works in T&I guys. With ppl like Ibiki and Anko. Yamanakas can not only take over your body (think of all the information they can gain with that! Without putting their team at risk! All I say is the chunin exams) No, Yamanakas can also invade the mind. And if that's not god damn scary and practical I don't know what is. Perfect for infiltration and Intel gathering. FIGHT ME add to that that she is one of the few able to actually motivate Shikamaru do do something other than laze around.
Lastly we have Nara Shikamaru aka the god damn genius with an IQ of 200. Over 200 if Asuma is to be believed. Hes a tactical genius, realistic in his approach and in his and his comrades abilities. Adapt at planing several steps ahead and predicting his opponent's behaviour. There is a reason why he made Chunin so early and why Ino and Choji trust and listen to his commands. And then remember the trapping abilities of his clan shadow jutsu. And the advanced techniques he later learns that enable him to kill with his shadows.
Aaah team 7.
The disaster. I'll start this off by saying that not one person on team 7 is mental stable or sound.
Still let me explain how they were INTENDED to work in my humble opinion.
Frontal assault team.
Uchiha Sasuke. Taijutsu proficient, top of his class. Smart. The second genius of his generation. While not as adapt at tactics as Shikamaru he learns quickly , has fairly big chakra reserves and a drive. Hell this boy learn a fire jutsu at the age of 7. Aka hes good at ninjutus as well. It is no secret that Kishimoto loves the Uchiha and it shows. And that's all before he awakened his Sharingan and the fact he is the last loyal Uchiha left in the village (by the time they form the teams and to the publics General knowledge)
Uzumaki Naruto. The ninjutsu powerhouse of team 7 simply because he is a ) an Uzumaki who were known for their big chakra reserves and b) he's the god damn jinchiruki od the kyuubi. Let's ad to that that I am still mad no one thought to capitalise on his prankster mentality by introducing this boy to traping because God damn it . This boy regularly pranked an entire shinobi village while wearing a bright kill me orange jumpsuit and he rarely got caught. Hell this boy stole the forbidden scroll. Out of the hokage tower. At the age of 12. And learned a kinjutsu in the matter of hours. Who caught him ? Iruka. Why? Because he was the only one who knew him well enough. God damn anbu didn't manage. Ad to that his ingenuity. Naruto is good at coming up with tactics on the fly by thinking outside of the box something that is shown in Shippuden when him and Sakura go against Kakashi, defeating Kakashi not by fighting him even tho that was what kakshi expected but by beating him using his knowledge of Kakshis love for Icha Icha. Boy was robbed of a good education and nobody can tell me otherwise.
And last Haruno Sakura. Book smart, good at retaining information. Have I mentioned perfect Chakra control ? She got the tree walking exercises in one go. Her place on the team is support provided either by Genjutsu or medical ninjutsu.
Lastly it is important to note why team 7 got Hatake Kakashi as their sensei. There are - at the time of team 7s formation- exactly two shinobi in the village that are able to control the kyuubi. Kakshi with his sharingan and Tenzo aka Yamato trough his mokuton abilities. Jiraya would probably count as well but unfortunately for everyone he's kind of busy outside of the village the god damn coward. Tenzo is in anbu and to valuable in his current position so Kakashi got the job. He also got Sasuke because Kakashi is the only Shinibi left in Konoha able to teach Sasuke how to use it. Sakura got thrown in because her grade were good.
And thast on my rant why in my opinion it makes no god damn sens to change the team members in Naruto. Does it mean I think this isn't flawed as hell? Oh Hell NO! I love Kakashi. I really do. But I'm under no Illusion what so ever that he was a shity teacher. He ignored Sakura, and Naruto and focused mainly on Sasuke. Not saying I don't have a theory why that was but we all know that Kakashi was in dire need of therapy before he even made Genin and it shows. He's not fit to teach. Then again its not like there's many other options left considering the situation. But maybe I'll cover that in another post who knows.
Edid:
Something I felt I needed to clarify after a conversation that I had with @hotarukanzaki 😂 I am well aware that Kakashi is not able to control Kurama. All im saying is that I personally think is was thought that he would be one of the few thought to have a chance of doing so should the need arise

Fitting In
Tenzo/Yamato x Reader
Synopsis: You were the odd one in the ANBU group, never quite fitting in with the little cliques that resided within them. But when you met Tenzo?? Oh, how your world flipped.
A/n: @adenspolaroids a couple weeks ago requested a Tenzo story, and I told myself these words “I can try when I meet him, but I don't think I’ll fall in love” and if some of you know me you know I have to be invested in a character to be inspired... Fast forward to now - let's not talk about how much I’m in love with this man alright? It's unhealthy.
Tumblr media
‘Too soft’; ‘Too kind’; ‘Weak’; ‘Ditzy’; ‘Stupid’
Those were just a few of the things that the other ANBU members said when asked about you, the giggly one in the back who somehow manages to drop her mask any chance she gets. Sure you weren’t the strongest or the smartest, and you definitely weren’t the best, but you were chosen. (A mystery you still had to figure out). It felt like the academy all over again as you looked around the fire, searching for a place to sit and eat. Upon seeing your exploring gaze, the members immediately took over all of the empty spaces around them. Even going so far as splaying out their legs to cover up the places where you could possibly squeeze in.
Yep, just like the academy.
Being the newbie was difficult, to begin with, but it would have been easier if you were as strong as them, then maybe they would respect you. Biting your lip, you forced the tears back as you moved towards the forest hoping you could find a spot alone to eat and cry. You immediately found a clearing about 10 feet from the others and sighed at how you could no longer hear their judgemental whispers about you.
The tears finally fell as you dropped your bag and mask, plopping down onto the cool, wet ground beside them. You couldn't’ do this, you weren’t strong enough to do this. Yet Lady Tsunade thought differently. Where you lacked in both fighting and stealth, you made up for in medical aid. You knew you were important and Tsunade thought that having you on the team, regardless of what you lacked in the other areas, would make up for it.
But you were wrong, you were so wrong.
Leaning back, a shaky breath left your throat as you urged yourself to calm down, you were almost home and you’d be home free. Your fingers rubbed the bridge of your nose, neck arching against the tree in the hopes of stretching out the stress that resided there.
“I never liked the groupings either” your eyes snapped open, immediately landing on another member in the treetop above. Tenzo, was that his name? “Sorry, I can leave” you whispered out as you began to push off the forest floor, but a hand on your shoulder stopped your movements. Your body jolted at how fast he moved to you, eyes widening as you were once again shown how you didn’t belong in this group.
“You can stay... I’ll sit with you”
His voice was monotone and gave off an ‘I don't care’ energy, but the slight glint in his eyes had your mind reeling. Maybe he felt left out as well? Deciding not to push it and instead welcome the interaction, you nodded and scooched over for him to sit next to you. Silence filled the space around you as he plopped down, grabbing his food from his bag while you sat there holding your own. Your fingers awkwardly played with the edges of the bag, mind racing at how friendly he was being. Was this a trick? Was he going to tease you just like the others-
“My names Tenzo, what's your name?”
Warm, why was he so warm? Your heart hammered as you looked up at him shyly. His body, his aura, his voice. All warm. All loving. “Y/n” you whispered out before turning back to your food, praying that your shy ways wouldn’t come out to play or you would surely be made fun of. Having a crush on a comrade? What a perfect new thing to make fun of.
Unbeknownst to you, he had seen the way your eyes sparkled and even heard the wavering in your voice. He made you nervous and while he wasn’t the smartest when it came to crushes or flirting, Kakashi had told him a couple of things about women. “Would you like my cracker? I don't like it but I know you do... I mean! I’ve seen you eat them before- Wait that’s... That's not what I-”
You giggled at how his calm and composed demeanor crumbled at his own words but decided to spare him any embarrassment and agreed that you’d take his cracker. “Thank you Tenzo. That's very sweet. Would you like my brownie? I’ve seen you take some from others” Your eyes gleamed playfully up at him as confidence began to course through you, no longer denying the fact that his presence was making you feel a certain way. A dark blush formed on his cheeks, the sight only deepening the smile on your face as another giggle flew out.
“S-sure!” he sputtered out as he reached for the brownie in your hands, quickly putting his cracker in the spot where the baked good once was. Silence fell over you two once more as you ate in peace, your mind racing over the next words to say while he wondered whether or not this was the part where he put his arm over your shoulder.
“Wish Kakashi was here”
You looked at each other in shock, realizing that you both whispered the same exact thing at the same exact time. A laugh bubbled up in your chest at how embarrassed he looked but you couldn’t have been happier at the fact that he was thinking the same thing as you. “I’m guessing Kakashi gave you pointers?” your teasing tone only served to make Tenzo’s blush creep down his neck, and he was thankful you couldn't see it because of the fabric covering it.
“Well, how about this. I don't belong in the ANBU, that much is painfully obvious. But I would like to keep seeing you.” Tenzo’s eyes widened the more you talked but he didn’t have a chance to say yes or no as the group calling for them stopped him short. You stood swiftly, giddy with finally being able to go home and be done with this hellish mission. You stopped in your tracks as you realized Tenzo was still on the ground, mouth open in shock at your words.
Looking back, you shot him a kind smile. “Maybe when we get home in a couple hours, we can go get some food?” his mouth slammed shut and he nodded swiftly at your request, knowing Kakashi was going to make fun of him for messing up. Your smile widened at his awestruck look, Kakashi was going to be so proud of you! “It's a date then!” you blurted out all while putting on your mask, blocking his view from the way your lip trembled in adrenaline.
They called for you again, screaming for you to hurry your ass up to which you moved swiftly back to the group. Tsunade would be upset to hear that you had given up this new venture so quickly, but hey, you got something out of it... Like a date with one of the ANBU members.
You were sure she'd be okay with that.

Pumpkin Carving
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/Shizune
For: @skykashi who always needs some KakaShizune in their life 💜💜💜
Words: 936
Three piles of paperwork. That was the first thing that Kakashi saw when he walked into his office that morning, and it took a considerable amount of effort to force himself forward.
All he wanted to do was turn around and forget about the paperwork.
Forget about the job.
He could run away and become a farmer. Buy a cute little patch of land and settle there. Convincing Tenzo to build him a comfortable home might prove troublesome, but then he would be free.
“Don’t look so glum,” Shizune teased as she brushed past him, a giant Pumpkin clutched in her arms. “I have something fun for us to do when you’re done with your paperwork today.”
Kakashi’s ears perked up. “Fun?” He asked, not even bothering to try and hide his excitement. “Fun as in-“
One sharp glare from her silenced him immediately. As enjoyable as his idea was, it wasn’t worth risking his life over, and Shizune would happily end his existence for the petty crime of being pervy at work.
“Fun as in Carving a pumpkin,” she clarified. “You can wait until we’re back at our place if you want anything more X rated.”
With that settled she turned back towards his desk and set the Pumpkin down directly in front of his paperwork.
“I wouldn’t suppose your fun idea has anything to do with-“ he waved a hand towards the pumpkin, just slightly offended by its presence on his otherwise clutter-free desk. “That?”
“Do you have a problem with the Pumpkin?” She frowned.
“Other than the fact it’s sitting on my desk right now, No,” he only hoped that it wouldn’t be staying there. Paperwork was already a pain to get through. It would only be worse if he had that itch in the back of his brain telling him something was on his desk that shouldn’t be. “You know I like my desk clean. Tsunade-Sama might work fine with an office that looks like Naruto ran through it before getting in his daily training exercises, but I don’t.”
Shizune just stood there staring at him, her mouth hanging open as though she wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words.
After a few awkward minutes of silence, she began laughing.
“Kakashi,” wiping a tear from her eyes she made an attempt to return to the topic at hand, only to devolve into another fit of laughter. “You are- I wish you would show this side of yourself to others.”
“This side?” He tilted his head, confused by her words. “What do you mean?”
“This!” waving a hand towards him she continued to laugh when he just stood there staring at her. “The overly dedicated worker. The man who needs a perfect workspace. When you came into this office it was a mess of paperwork and books. You spent the first two days as Hokage just reorganizing everything so you could focus.”
“I like a clean office.” “You know there are people who think you just sit in this office all day reading porn, right?” Shizune snickered. “They’re be gobsmacked to find out that Hatake Kakashi, the aloof care free Shinobi, can’t work with a cluttered desk.”
“I can work with a cluttered desk,” he corrected her, just a little insulted by her words. “I prefer not to.”
Rolling her eyes, Shizune took a step forward and poked a finger into his chest. “You’d be miserable.”
“I will be miserable,” he argued. “With that thing on my desk.”
“It’s a Pumpkin.”
“Why does it need to be on my desk?”
Moving her hand back, she reached up and carefully poked him right against the nose, giggling when his face scrunched up in protest. “When you’re done with your paperwork,” she began. “We’re going to throw some bags on your desk and carve that pumpkin.”
Somehow this conversation was making him even more confused.
“Why would we carve it?” he asked. “To eat?”
The smile dropped off of Shizune’s face. “K-Kakashi, have you never carved a Pumpkin before?”
“No?” he answered without pause and immediately regretted it when Shizune’s eyes bugged out. “I didn’t realize…is this a thing?”
Spinning around in her spot, Shizune stepped back towards the desk and began clearing all of the paperwork off, careful not to drop anything and to press the piles right up against the wall so they were as far away from people who might knock them over as possible.
“Shizune-”
“We’re carving it now,” she declared with a fire in her voice that Kakashi usually only heard when she was scolding him for taking his time on paperwork. “I can’t believe- How can you be thirsty-five and never have carved a Pumpkin before?”
For the first time in years, Kakashi was speechless. All he could do was stand there watching as his girlfriend cleared off his desk and stormed off to retrieve something to cover it in, muttering about ‘pumpkin guts’ as she went.
Whatever it was they were doing, he was excited. Even if he could foresee a giant mess in his future.
Spending time with Shizune that didn’t involve paperwork and meetings was a gift he would never turn away, especially when it involved learning something new.
Though, for some reason, he could already feel a week's worth of teasing. Something about how this should have all been done when he was younger and how he’s so far behind all of his friends in regards to emotional growth because he spent his younger years so focused on proving himself that he forgot to live.
A fact he was all too aware of.

In Which I Attempt to Wreak Havoc Upon Panharmonium's Heart. Or Something.
Because I am an awesome friend, clearly, and possibly making people sad/verklempt is definitely an excellent way to (belatedly 😔 but I did start before the 15th!) celebrate Kakashi's birthday, right? ;)
I will admit up front that this is nowhere near as deftly structured and compiled as your Kakashi fanmix, @panharmonium, but that is precisely why I'm not even going to try to organize all these songs into individual playlists. Yet. Plus, I have a tendency to over-explain so this way I can better expound on why certain songs remind me of certain characters. Sorry that I sorta went a little... overboard?
Everything--except a few that aren't available on spotify, I'll link to them directly--can be listened to HERE.
What I'm Looking For - Brendan Benson | Kakashi → I may be a little biased with this one because it fits SO many of my favorite characters so well, somehow, but there's just something about the upbeat/tongue-in-cheek musical cues/delivery of lines such as 'I visit hell on a daily basis, and I see the sadness in all your faces' that just feels so Kakashi to me.
Happy Ending - MIKA | Kakashi → This is presumably a breakup song, but I enjoy it so much more in a non-romantic context (and the song itself isn't really boxed in with overtly romantic framing, so I appreciate that!). Anyway, some very important instructions IMO for listening to this with Kakashi in mind: everything before the bridge is about Kakashi up through his ANBU years, but when you get to the 'little bit of love' refrain, picture Kakashi meeting Tenzo, and then becoming Team 7's sensei, opening back up to Gai, adopting all the other leaf genin, assimilating Sai and Yamato into Team 7, and it keeps building with Kakashi gaining more and more loved ones to fill the hole in his heart, and then cry tears of joy with me! Just my personal suggestion. :D
Light - Sleeping At Last | Kakashi & Team 7 (/all his kids)
with every heartbeat I have left I will defend your every breath
→ I've seen this song used for ship vids and I'm all ????? about that because this is clearly a song about the love you have for your child! But I suppose if one of my favorite pastimes is aggressively re-interpreting love songs in non-romantic ways, I can't begrudge the opposite process... too much, lol.
Heroes - MIKA | Team Minato
your blood on me/and my blood on you/but to make you bleed/the only thing I wouldn't do/.../I wish there was a way/to give you a hand to hold/'cause you don't have to die in your glory/die, to never grow old
Long Lost Friends - Transit | Kakashi & Obito
how long/do you have to say that/this is not the person I used to know/you are not the person I used to know/.../because lately, you've been looking at me like you've seen a ghost/and isn't it obvious who's been missing who the most
→ What the heck! What the heck! What the heck! What the heck! What the heck!
Against the Voices - Switchfoot | Kakashi
'cause everybody knows/the hardest war to fight/is the fight to be yourself/when the voices try to turn you into someone else
Out of the Darkness - Matthew and the Atlas | Obito? Yamato? Kakashi? Itachi & Sasuke? Naruto & Kurama? → I'm a bit undecided about this one, or if I should just not worry about choosing one character and just let myself feel all the "inner darkness is not an innate characteristic, Danzo! They're just grieving/in a lot of pain, and they can find their way out of that dark place!" feels.
Save A Place - 1969 | Kakashi & Sasuke
so I'll keep away and save a place for you/and I'll only make the same mistakes as you/.../when all the blood all over your fingers is dried up/the pain will still linger
→ I'm not uber-confident in picking out really fitting Kakashi & Sasuke songs yet, but I hope this hits a lot of the right notes for you. :)
Thrive - Switchfoot | Kakashi
I'm always close, but I'm never enough/I'm always in line, but I'm never in love/I get so down, but I won't give up/I get so down, but I won't give up
→ See, it says right there that he's never in love! Not the crux of the song, and he's not always 'in line' either, but still! :)
Disarm - The Civil Wars | Kakashi & Obito
the years burn, burn, burn
→ I don't know how I keep collecting fictional relationships that work so well for this song, but literally every single line of this song hits so hard for these two?? Will never recover from this. (Also, I usually disregard when 'my love' pops up in the last line of the chorus, as the mood dictates. :) It's pretty incidental as is IMO.)
Renaissance - Paolo Buonvino & Skin | Sakumo & Obito & Kakashi & Naruto
let me show you one last time/let me show you one last sign/you can find it/I can't say that I can change the world/but if you let me, I can make another world for us/let me suffer all for you/make this vision all brand new/we can fight them/I can't say that I can win it all, [but] come with me and I will make my words stand tall
→ Okay, this is a very odd choice given that it's actually the theme song for a different show about the Italian renaissance (if you happen to see this, Mirjam, don't hate me!), but this could be IT! The "those who break the rules are scum, but those who would abandon their friends are worse than scum" anthem that's all about building a better world based on these principles! I really hope our sharing-a-brain talent translates to listening to this song in this way because I am feeling SOME KIND of way about this!
The Lament of Eustace Scrubb - The Oh Hellos | Kakashi → I really liked the song you chose from this album for your fanmix, so now I've feeling a tiny bit too on-the-nose with my choice, but I guess this is just a Kakashi album all around. 😆
Glass Heart Hymn - Paper Route | Kakashi(+ Obito) & Sasuke(+ Itachi)
memories as heavy as a stone/ I am empty, in my end you are my beginning
This Is Home - Switchfoot | Yamato & Kakashi (+ Team 7)
and now, after all my searching/after all my questions/I'm gonna call it home
→ All finding-where-you-belong songs are actually Yamato songs. True story!
Faust, Midas, & Myself - Switchfoot | Obito
you have one life left to leave/you have one life left to lead
→ Could this be any more perfect for Obito? It even has creepy-old-man!Madara!
Pluto - Sleeping At Last | Kakashi
Always Gold - Radical Face | Kakashi & Obito/Sasuke & Itachi/Naruto & Sasuke
all my life, I've never known where you've been/there were holes in you, the kind that I could not mend/and I heard you say, right when you left that day/does everything go away?/yeah, everything goes away/but I'm going to be here till forever/so just call when you're around
→ ...but mostly Kakashi & Obito because 'there were holes in you' 😭😭😭
Lemon Boy - Cavetown | Yamato & Kakashi → You already know the delights of this song of course, but I gots to be comprehensive. :)
Everywhere I Go - Lissie/cover by Sleeping At Last | Kakashi & Team Minato
danger will follow me now everywhere I go/angels will call on me and take me to my home/well, these tired eyes just want to remain closed
→ I chose the Sleeping At Last cover for maximum angst, 'cause sometimes it be like that.
Uneven Odds - Sleeping At Last | Kakashi
maybe your light is a seed, and the darkness the dirt, in spite of the uneven odds, beauty lifts from the earth
→ ...just like an earth style: mud wall :') Okay, okay, bad jokes aside, the seed metaphor of course makes me want to associate it with Tenzo, but this is clearly a Kakashi song!
Twenty-four - Switchfoot | Kakashi & Obito
life is not what I thought it was twenty-four hours ago/and I'm not who I thought I was twenty-four hours ago/still I'm singing spirit, take me up in arms with you/you're raising the dead in me/I wanna see miracles/to see the world change/wrestled the angel for more than a name/for more than a feeling, for more than a cause/I'm singing spirit, take me up in arms with you/and you're raising the dead in me
I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme) - John Rzeznik | Kakashi
and how can they say I never change?/they're the ones that stay the same/.../they can't tell me who to be/'cause I'm not what they see/.../and their words are just whispers/and lies that I'll never believe
→ Yeah, I might've accidentally imprinted on Treasure Planet as a 14 year old, and then someone made sure this song would forever live in my heart by making a fanvid of it with my favorite character from my robin hood show, but! He's still here!
See You Again - Wiz Khalifa (feat. Charlie Puth) | Kakashi & Obito/Team Minato
how can we not talk about family when family's all that we got?/everything I went through, you were standing there by my side/and now you gon' be with me for the last ride
→ I am being very unoriginal here, and there are in fact already fanvids made for these relationships set to this song (along with many others featuring different Naruto relationships), but I don't think I'll be able to rest until I translate the movie playing in my head whenever I hear this song now into an actually watchable format. After all, they have come a long way from where they began, and I intend to make that both as touching and ironically hilarious as possible!
Goodnight, Travel Well - The Killers | Kakashi → Admittedly, I got this idea from a magnificently crafted fanvid done for my robin hood show, but I genuinely think it would be really interesting to make something similar for Kakashi centered around the time he technically died but got better? I don't know how to explain it, but I think it fits quite well.
30 Lives - Imagine Dragons | Kakashi & all the people he's loved and lost → can be listened to here.
A Pound of Flesh - Radical Face | Kakashi
then today I wake up feeling easy/and find I'm on more familiar roads/I got a darkness wrapped inside me/but now it ain't so hard to let it go/so keep a candle burning in the window/I'm almost home
Hold Back The River - James Bay | Kakashi & life getting in the way of him being with his precious people (you may be sensing a pattern here) → @the road of life: Let! Kakashi! And his People! Hold! Each! Other!!! Also, 'tried to square not being there, but think that I should have been' is absolutely about Sasuke's defection and Kakashi adding it to his long list of undeserving self-recriminations.
The Fall - Imagine Dragons | Yamato & Kakashi → 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Shadowman - K's Choice | could work equally well for Kakashi or Obito, I think
any time tomorrow a part of me will die/and a new one will be born/any time tomorrow/I'll get sick of asking why/sick of all the darkness I have worn/any time tomorrow/I will try to do what's right/making sense of all I can/any time tomorrow I'll pretend to see the light/I just might/.../and doesn't it make you sad?/to see so much love denied/see nothing but a shadowman inside
Paint - The Paper Kites | Kakashi & Team 7
still there's a wound and I'm moving slow/though it don't show, though it don't show/I've got a hole where nothing grows,/how little you know, how little you know
→ A song for just how much Team 7 doesn't know about their sensei.
Always Find Me Here - Transit | Kakashi → ...most likely at the memorial stone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (why am I like this)
Taste - Sleeping At Last | Kakashi
it’s bittersweet, it’s poetry/a careful pruning of my dead leaves/it’s holy ground, a treasure chest/I'm on my knees and only scratch the surface/like fists unraveling, like glass unshattering/we’re breaking all the rules, we’re breaking bread again/we’re swallowing light ’til we’re fixed from the inside
Help - Hurts | Yamato & Kakashi
take my hand and lead the way/out of the darkness and into the light of the day/.../'cause I know what I've been missing/and I know that I should try/but there's hope in this admission/and there's freedom in your eyes/.../I can feel the darkness coming/and I'm afraid of myself/call my name and I'll come running/'cause I just need some help
→ NO ONE TOUCHE ME.
Your Soul - RHODES | A mish-mash of Kakashi & Tenzo and Rin & Obito & Kakashi and Gai & Kakashi vibes? → So like, 'oh you know when you're alone/I'm holding on and on and on and on/to your soul' reminded me of your 'when you're all alone...the only thing you really think about is dying' 'but when there are two of you...the only thing you can think about is surviving.' and now kakashi - who just saved his life - is asking him 'did you want to die' and yamato is saying 'no' there are two of them and yamato wants to SURVIVE. tags as well as Gai's steadfastness as a friend, and 'I just wanna hold your hand' made me think of Rin's "Well then, I'm just going to have to connect the two of you." while holding their hands, and the sunlight/'soul shine'/'your light' motif is just A Lot in this song!!
7 Years - Lukas Graham | Kakashi → Alright, yeah, there are already approximately a gazillion pre-existing Naruto AMVs for this song and even one or two focusing on Kakashi, but they don't capitalize on all the angst possibilities in many of the lyrics or reach the fluff potential of 'will I think the world is cold or will I have a lot of children who can warm me [when I'm old]' and I cannot abide that!
Putting The Dog To Sleep - The Antlers | Kakashi & Sasuke → Okay, on one hand, this song is One Big Oof. But I do like the (potentially odd) way I've conceptualized it for Kakashi & Sasuke? Like, the first half is Kakashi going through all the tragedies in his life and getting lost in ANBU, but then in the second half it transitions to him wanting to prevent Sasuke from having to be as alone as Kakashi once was and they can face life together? It makes me emotional!
Trust Me - The Fray | Kakashi & Obito
I found a friend, or should I say a foe?/said there's a few things you should know/we don't want you to see/we come, and we go/here today, gone tomorrow
→ There are a few lines that call Tenzo & Kakashi to mind, but mostly it's Obito & Kakashi.
The Lightning Strike (What If This Storm Ends?) - Snow Patrol | Kakashi → I had to, right? My mindscape is a little murky/scattered about what specifically I want to think about when I listen to this, but obviously it has to do with Kakashi in one way or another.
Kettering - The Antlers | Team Minato(???) → Honestly not sure if this will make any sense, but yeah, vague team minato vibes?
Swans - Unkle Bob | Kakashi & Obito/Rin/Minato/Kushina/Sakumo → They should be by his side always!!!
Looking Too Closely - Fink | Kakashi → I honestly feel rather ambivalent about this one too, but I can't deny 'truth is like blood underneath your fingernails/and you don't wanna hurt yourself, hurt yourself/looking too closely' always destroys me because... well, you know. I love suffering. :(
Souvenirs - Switchfoot | Kakashi & Obito & Rin
wolves - Switchfoot | Kakashi
snowfall for the battlefield/roses for the father's sons/see them red on the ground:/bleeding/when the revolution came/we were more than hungry men/we were hoping for more:/bleeding/end. begin again./all of my world is collision and spin/hope is a world that has yet to begin/awaken, oh sleeper/awaken, oh sleeper/a new day begins
→ I wanted a wolf-related song too. :)
PRODIGAL SOUL - Switchfoot | Obito, Itachi, & Sasuke; just all them wayward Uchiha boys
Coming Down - Dear Euphoria | kid!Kakashi & his relationships
the shell/that I wore/it wasn't for fun/it wasn't to make you/stick around/it was for survival/it was what I've learnt/it was for the sun/.../our love has grown/our love has flown
→ Another one I'm a little unsure of whether it makes sense outside of my head or not, but I like the vibes?
Ghosts That We Knew - Mumford & Sons | Kakashi & Yamato? → Hmm, can I maybe submit this as a Kakashi-&-Yamato-just-need-to-mske-it-through-this-war-so-they-can-have-a-bright-bright-future song?
All Is Well (It's Only Blood) - Radical Face | Kakashi → ...he said as he's bleeding out or after he's thrown himself in the line of fire protecting someone he thinks is a better person than himself...
Bleeding Out - Imagine Dragons | Kakashi
when the hour is nigh/and hopelessness is sinking in/and the wolves all cry/to fill the night with hollering/when your eyes are red/and emptiness is all you know/with the darkness fed/I will be your scarecrow/you tell me to hold on/oh, you tell me to hold on/but innocence is gone/and what was right is wrong
→ In a similar vein to the previous song. But goodness gracious! Were they NOT straight up describing Kakashi here?
Amaryllis - Shinedown | Yamato & Kakashi → Just tossing this one out there, not sure if it will make sense or if it's a reach... but I like it?
lost 'cause - Switchfoot | Kakashi & Sasuke
are we a lost cause?/or are we just lost 'cause/we won't be the future we refuse to see?/and if I'm your lost cause/it'll be your lost 'cause/you won't see me as I am, the possibility/that I'm not the enemy
→ 214 feels. (And before and after that, but yeah.)
Through the Ghost - Shinedown | Kakashi & Obito
so many silent sorrows/you never hear from again/and now that you've lost tomorrow/is yesterday still a friend?/.../everything that mattered is just/a city of dust/covering both of us/did you hide yourself away?/I can't see you anymore/.../did you hide yourself away?/are you living through the ghost?/did you finally find a place/above the shadows so the world will never know?/the world will never know you like I do ... like I still do
Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men | Kakashi → Just Kakashi having little chats with his ghosts, totally the most heartwarming way to conclude this section. 😅
Sleepyhead - Passion Pit | Kakashi → Just kidding! Here's a slightly less morbid song for the Most Tired Boy Of Them All.™ (Random aside: this was my customary song to listen to on my walks to 8AM organic chemistry classes; I found it strangely soothing! On a different occasion, after a particularly long day for her, one of my roommates didn't have the energy to make it to her bed but nevertheless requested a lullaby from us. So I obliged by playing this song for her, but she didn't seem to gain the same peace of mind from it as I did. 😄 I know it's not my place to propose anything like this, but it does amuse me to imagine bookends!Kakashi in these situations, even though it's not OChem classes he has to go to.)
General/Miscellaneous:
Rise Above It - Switchfoot | Ensemble
don't care what they're telling me/we can be what we want to be/.../just because it's law doesn't mean that it's fair/.../don't believe the system's on your side/.../the curse is spoken/the system's broken; rise above it
→ I mean, how could I not think about Naruto when this song also has the lines 'hear us sing tonight like the last night on earth/we will rise like the tide/like dead men coming back to life/we are rising, rising'? It's fun to be literal sometimes!
Doorways - Radical Face | Allllll the traumatized children → Someone has to put all those tragic childhood flashbacks to good use, after all.
Ghost Towns - Radical Face | take your pick of Itachi, Sasuke, or Post-Kannabi-Bridge!Obito
there's no comin' home/with a name like mine/I still think of you/but everyone knows/yeah everyone knows/if you care, let it go
Blinding Light - Switchfoot | Hey, Hiruzen? You may have coined the phrase, "children are the king" but I don't think you truly understand it... (insert Princess Bride joke here)
hey boy, don't believe them/we're the nation that eats our youth/.../still looking for the blinding light/still looking for the reason why/still looking for the sun to shine/all my life I've been living in the darkest night/still looking for the blinding light/to take me higher and higher
Brother's Blood - Kevin Devine | EVERYONE → ...but certainly so much you could do with Itachi & Sasuke, Obito & Kakashi, Shisui & Itachi, even Hashirama & Madara! Sakumo's teammates turning their backs on him and saying 'I don't know one thing about my brother's blood'?!?! There are SO MANY ideas I have for this song! It gives me chills and makes my brain scream.
We Need Each Other - Sanctus Real | Ensemble → Already mentioned this one to you, but I have to include it here for thoroughness' sake!
Whispering - Alex Clare | the Hidden Leaf's lost/ostracized children/orphans
who will care for the falling?/who will care for the falling leaves?
So this is probably a strange concept to come up with and apply to this song, but the 'whispering, whispering, whispering' parts brought Konaha's virulent gossiping/passing judgement about others and often kids they don't even know problem to mind, too, and yeah?
The World You Want - Switchfoot | Ensemble → If I were to make a fanvid set to this song, I would definitely keep a broad focus, but I can't deny that the lines 'you start to look like what you believe, you float through time like a stream, if the waters of time are made up by you and I, I could change the world for you, you change it for me' FOR SURE has strong Obito & Kakashi/Kakashi & Tenzo vibes.
Red Eyes - Switchfoot | Ensemble, but definitely many dashes of Uchihas 😄 → I would like to thank Masashi Kishimoto for creating a world where red eyes are a Thing of Importance so I can one day make a fanvid using this song in not just the tired or teary bloodshot-red eyes way, but in a very literal sense too.
TAKE MY FIRE - Switchfoot | The Will of Fire → 'Cause I think I'm sooooo clever. 😄
Above The Clouds Of Pompeii - Bear's Den | various parent & child relationships → This obviously derives from the not-caring-about-your-female-characters problem, but it always gets me that all the single parents in the Naruto universe are almost invariably the fathers! I guess sometimes you can safely guess that the mothers are still alive/exist, but either way we hardly ever get to see them. :/ The one exception I can think of right now is Kurenai, but maybe I'm forgetting another conspicuous single mother. Anyway, I don't know if this helps or hinders more a potential Naruto fanvid for this song, but regardless, it still gives me feelings?
Who We Are - Switchfoot | Ensemble → It just makes me inordinately happy that the chorus for this song starts with 'who we are (in the fever of our youth)', you know? :D
Brother - Kodaline | all the friendships we can stuff in here and then some → Quite a well known song I'm pretty sure, but I love how many dynamics one could showcase in a potential fanvid of this. And, not gonna lie, 'oh brother, we go deeper than the ink beneath the skin of our tattoos' deserves to be used in some sort of Tenzo 'n' Kakashi or Team Ro fan creation!
Special Bonus:
Shake It Out - Florence + The Machine | Kakashi & Obito → I'm not sure whether I would have realized how well this works for Kakashi & Obito on my own, funnily enough, but then I found this fanvid of it (containing only scenes you've seen naturally!) and it hit me like a ton of bricks. It's so well done!

A wonderful Idea brought to me by @samuraiisms
Kagema Kakashi who has a home of his own to work out of, and enough 'clients' (that he also happens to call boyfriends because they've been around so long they sort of art) that they have to take turns.
there's a detailed list of who gets to be with Kakashi when, with each client having a certain time slot every few days in which they get Kakashi all to themselves.
Kakashi even sets up different rooms for types of sex that his partner wants. Like there's a very simplistic, basic room if his partner just wants vanilla sex and cuddles afterwards.
there's the darker room with candlelight that's for more risque intimacy that will often include bondage and wax play.
Kakashi keeps boxes of toys in each of the rooms, and before each session starts his clients get to look through the box and pick some toys that they want to use that day. He might suggest a toy to go with them if he thinks it might add to their enjoyment but otherwise leaves the choice completely up to them.
Each of them also has their own safe words with Kakashi, so he knows what to listen out for or say if things are getting a bit too intense and need to slow down or stop completely.
Of course, Sex is not restricted only to the bedrooms Kakashi has so carefully decorated. Every area in the house is open, and sometimes his clients think they just want to cuddle up on the couch for a bit before going to a room, only to end up fucking on the couch. Or Kakashi will be in the middle of making a nice meal for them after around, and they'll end up going for a second round on the dinner table, or the counter.
each of his clients also has a favourite room, so Kakashi knows where to take them if they're struggling with deciding for themselves where they want to be.
Iruka particularly likes the living room, where he's surrounded by books and can openly vent to Kakashi about anything that might be weighing on his mind
Tenzo likes the garden most of all and has a fondness for being intimate with Kakashi under the cover of the little garden he actually helps Kakashi maintain.
Gai loves bathtub sex. Kakashi has a large tub that can easily fit three people, and will often crawl onto Gai's lap while the warm water works away the pains in his muscles.
Ibiki much prefers being intimate in the bedroom, but Kitchen sex is not out of the question for this man and Kakashi has absolutely gotten on his knees to suck him off while they were enjoying a meal.
there are some clients that visit less often because of their work, like Zabuza and Obito. Sometimes they'll find time to sneak in and visit with Kakashi for a bit, but they're far less frequent than the others.
there are also the clients that Kakashi gets very rarely. the people around town who go to him when they need to unwind, or want to try something new. The one's who don't have designated slots on Kakashi's schedules but fit into his free spaces that he keeps open just in case.

Always down to discuss Akastuki Sakura AUs.
One if the more interesting things for me to discuss is why she defects from Konoha. My favorite one (admittedly a common itasaku fanfic trope. I'll find an example if I can) is the "Let's make a deal" trope where Sakura makes a deal with Itachi to heal his eyes if he doesn't hurt Sasuke or so that she can intervene during the inevitable battle. I think these were written before Itachi's full backstory came out, since it ignores a lot of reasons why he might not be interested in that kind of deal, but I like it because allows for some healing intimacy that I don't think Itachi would allow from a somewhat random stranger.
What's your favorite idea for why Sakura joins Akatsuki and Itachi's response to it?
@haruno-sakura-san
I had this idea way back when of Tsunade finding out that there is a spy among the Akatsuki but Jiraiya dies before he can tell her who it is. So she sends Sakura (along with Tenzo maybe) to meet the spy.
They get to the meet point and there is Itachi Uchiha, waiting for them.
They immediately assume it's a trap, but Itachi doesn't say anything. He just tosses them a scroll and disappears. The scroll has information on Pein's planned attack. Sakura doesn't want to trust it. Tenzo is hesitant, conflicted about trusting the information Itachi passed them. But Tsunade can't risk ignoring it and so she evacuates the leaf and prepares the shinobi to face Pein.
There are still a ton of casualties but fewer than in cannon since the shinobi aren't splitting their focus between protecting innocent people and fighting Pein.
Tsunade still goes into a coma. Leaving Danzo as acting Hokage. Danzo seizes the opportunity to label Sasuke a missing nin and sends Root forces out to capture both Uchiha brothers.
Sakura leaves the leaf that night. She has to warn them. She doesn't know why Itachi helped the leaf, but she knows that he saved countless lives by warning them about the attack. She leaves a note for Tenzo, letting him know what she's doing.
She isn't planning on joining the akatsuki at first. But she finally manages to make contact with Itachi to warn him and she sees it. The paleness on his face, the rapid breathing, the dark circles. He starts coughing and she smells the blood right away. Her instinct kicks in and she rushes over to ease the fit.
When she realizes the extent of the damage, her stomach drops. Even if she hates him, even with everything he put Sasuke through, he's also the only good source of information they have about the akatsuki's plans. Pein's attack proves how much the leaf needs Itachi alive. So Sakura makes a decision. She decides to join the akatsuki, in order to keep Itachi alive and in hopes of finding Sasuke to try and pretect him from Danzo's root agents.
Another option would be if Sasuke's aggression towards his previous teammates and his insults was enough to drive Sakura into a little bit darker place. She wants to get stronger. Needs to get stronger. Needs to make him see that she is strong enough to stay by his side. And she has witnessed the strength of the Akatsuki first hand. When Tsunade refuses to teach her forbidden techniques, she leaves the leaf and goes to the Akatsuki desperate to find a way to catch up to Sasuke and Naruto but in a more twisted way now.
And of course there is the amnesia fic that you started a while back. That could be a neat introduction to Akatsuki Sakura, where her joining is more of an accident. She just keeps making decisions that take her further and further away from Konoha and doesn't see a way back, all the while becoming more and more conflicted about who Itachi is and how the person she is coming to know can be the same person that Sasuke hated so much.
