Despite the rain that’s steadily falling outside, despite the wind that pushes through the streets, despite the way either directly impacts the atmosphere in the room, your smile makes it all meaningless. It was already getting dark outside. You were sitting on the steps between the chairs that surrounding the school field. Lights suddenly flashed in the field in front of you, casting a small glow in your direction. For a moment, you wondered who went to turn them on. Probably Kanemaru. Or Toujou....

You put your arms around your knees, sighing quietly. The air was unusually cool for the first weeks of spring. You sat in silence watching from above a group of third years swinging their bats. As always, they didn't waste a moment.

You knew you should go and yell at them. They should go to bed already because tomorrow is another important game. If they get tired today, they will be useless tomorrow. That was your duty as a manager. However, you didn’t move.  Your body seemed paralyzed and the pain in your chest kept you awake. It distracted you and prevented you from continuing to function. In front of the team, you tried to keep your face, although you had the impression that Jun noticed the red abrasions under your eyes. Every day you tried to cover them with concealer before leaving the house, however, the boy was much more savvy than he seemed.

"(name)." You twitched and turned your head at the sound of your name. A slight smile appeared on your face as you saw a dark-haired boy with beer-colored eyes, always serious, standing at the top of the stairs where you were sitting. He looked at you inquiringly while pointing a finger at the seat next to you. Without a word, you patted the concrete with your hand signaling him that he could sit down without fear. When he took the indicated seat, silence fell between you.

For several days it seemed to him that you were absent. Several times you were hit on the field with a ball that you didn't notice because you were wandering somewhere with your thoughts. When Jun told him that he saw red marks under your eyes, he became concerned. Tetsu was also worried that Isashiki had noticed it first. Not him.

"They are amazing." You said quietly embracing your arms. 

"Yes," he muttered without taking his eyes off the baseball field. However, you saw out of the corner of your eye that Tetsuya glanced at you. He looked a little nervous even though he tried to keep a serious expression on his face. 

"What's going on?" He asked after a while leaning his elbows on his knees. He intertwined his hands loosely in front of him. You have become tense inside. “guys say you've been sad for days and absent-minded. I noticed it myself, I thought it was a matter of Japanese exams, but it was a week ago and Kataoka-san gave us the results today. You said you passed and yet your mood hasn't changed.”

"I broke up with xyz." you said quietly lowering head so hair covered your sad face.

"Wait what?" he choked out. He didn't expect such a quick answer. As the captain of the seido team, he was ready to make a speech that you were a part of the team, as they were, that's why they were worried about you and you could talk to them whenever you had a problem.

As an ordinary Yuki Tetsuya, he expected any answer but not this one.

"To be honest, he broke up with me," you added at which Tetsu's eyes got even bigger. You intertwined your fingers together and squeezed them so tightly that your knuckles turned white.

"Why? You two seemed like a harmonious couple." These words struggled to pass through his throat. He was always jealous of xyz and the fact that he had you to himself. From what he counted quickly in his head, you were together for two or almost three years, because you started dating in first grade.

You never talked too much about him but there were days when you walked around feeling frisky which could indicate that you had seen each other the previous day or were supposed to see each other after class.

He didn't want to admit it to himself at that moment, but the fact that you and xyz had broke up made him happy. 

"Is there something wrong with me?" You asked suddenly lifting your head up. In the dim light of the stadium lights Yuki saw tears streaming down your cheeks. He didn't want to think how many you had already cried.

"Why?" he got up from his seat and squatted in front of you catching your hands in his, entwined on your knees." did he say something to you?" you shook your head. "so why do you say that?" you just shrugged your shoulders. 

You suddenly snatched your hands away from him and hid your face in them. You didn't want him to see you crying even though it was too late. 

Yuki was tearing up inside. He didn't know why xyz broke up with you, he knew he wouldn't do something like that. For two or three years you had been his dream that he couldn't fulfill.  Something he couldn't grasp. A goal he couldn't reach. He felt insufficient all the time. It pissed him off that you would never look at him the way you looked at xyz that one day when Tetsu saw you together in the park. He muttered quietly disgruntled while pressing his fingers to the back of his nose. He was selfish. At the moment when you were going through a breakdown he was thinking only about himself.

You suddenly threw your arms around his neck. Tetsuya stiffened in surprise at your proximity but after a moment he grabbed you in his arms and pulled you close in the strongest hug he could offer.

If it had been him, he would never have let you part. He would never have made you feel inferior and insufficient.

Sawamura -> He's a bit familiar with these situations from his yips phase. Very quiet when comforting you, mostly out of fear that if he were his usual loud self it'd cause more harm than good. Handles you very gently and coaxes you into doing some breathing exercises with him to calm you down a bit. Afterwards he'll do whatever would make you most comfortable. Run you a bath? He's on it! Need some water? He's already in the kitchen! Just want to snuggle up with him? His arms are open and awaiting your hugs!

Furuya -> Very lost and worried the first time he sees you in this state. Unsure of what to do so he just follows his gut in that moment. Sits down besides you and rubs your back to let you know he's there, if you want him to hold you his arms are open in an instant. Afterwards he'd ask you if there were specific things you'd want him to do in the event that this happens again. Furuya wouldn't want to accidentally overstep your boundaries and make you feel worse so he compiles a little list of things you said would comfort you so he's prepared for next time.

Haruichi -> Haruichi would whisper encouraging words to you. He speaks in a very light, airy tone in hopes of calming you down a bit. If you're comfortable with it he pulls you to sit on his lap so you can hold on to each other; sometimes he even quietly hums songs his mom used to sing for him. Would rock you back and forth in his arms just praying that you know you're safe with him. Won't force you to talk but is always happy when you do so the both of you can work on finding healthy ways to diminish the frequency of your break downs.

Kanemaru -> Please he's sO worried. Kanemaru hates seeing you upset or in pain so he's doing anything to make you comfortable. Firmly Holds you to his chest and presses kisses to the side of your head. Quite literally won't leave your side the rest of the day.

Toujou -> Toujou does his best to make sure you're not feeling alone; he's wants you to know that he is present in the moment and is there to help in any way you need. He always finds a way to coax you into a conversation to distract you from the source of all your stress. If you don't want to talk he usually puts on some sort of background noise like rain water or a playlist of softer songs you enjoy.

Kuramochi -> Can tell right away when something is wrong and is on top of things the second he sees you start to tip over the edge. Mochi wouldn't want to overcrowd you and make you feel congested so he's sits across from you and draws little shapes on the palms of your hands. He tends to talk you through everything, reassuring you that you're safe and that he's here for you.

Miyuki -> So so so so gentle!! Yes he's normally emotionally detached and makes fun of you half the time, but if your hurting (whether it be mentally of physically) he won't leave your side until he's certain you're ok. Big believer in breathing techniques so he's always trying to get you to match your breathing with his. If you're ok with physical contact he usually pulls you into his side and let's you rest your head on his shoulder. Always listens to you if you want to talk about what's been getting you so worked up.

Kawakami -> Understands how torturous it seems when your own mind and body are against you. Has the gentlest smile on his face when he notices what's wrong. Of course it pains him to see you like this but it's not a feeling he focuses on. Instead, he puts all his energy into comforting you and your well-being. Would definitely make you both some tea and stick near you till you start to recover a bit. He's also really into aromatherapy (it's a method that works for him) so he has a lavender infused blanket ready if you want it. Very in touch with what comforts you. If you want him to talk to you so you have something to focus on, he will! If you need some form of physical comfort he's got a cozy spot on the couch perfect for snuggles!

Ryousuke -> Very calm and refuses to baby you (i.e. he's not gonna fluff it up and be all "Oh my poor baby! What's wrong, sweetheart?"🥺🥺) Lets you use his lap as a pillow and will run his finger through/over your hair. Not much for whispering sweet nothings but he will look you in the face and say something along the lines of: "I'm right here, ok? Just concentrate on calming down a bit." He's a wonderful listener if you ever want to talk about what's been going on, there's not a smidge of judgement on his end.

Tetsuya -> He's still very stoic on the outside but there's a noticable softness in his eyes. Does the thing where he runs his hands up and down your arms. Tetsu would most likely want to discuss everything. He might try to give you advice or little reminders to take time for yourself. He doesn't want you to think your facing everything alone, he wants you to feel comfortable sharing things with him. Would definitely be one of the rare times he gets a smidge sappy to let you know he loves you.

Jun -> Such a sweetheart! A bit hesitant the first time he sees you breaking down but immediately snaps into action. Scoops you up and brings you somewhere comfortable. Keeps telling you that you're ok and that nothing will hurt you. Presses a bunch of kisses to the top of your head and cheeks.

Chris -> Chris is naturally just a soft-spoken person so his demeanor doesn't change at all. His voice when he whispers is incredibly comforting to listen to; it's low and rumbly, man just exudes warmth. He won't belittle your stress or fears at all, he actively listens to you in hopes of finding some way to help. Gives really great hugs so if you're in need of affection you've literally won the jackpot with him.

Sanada -> Is somehow, even in this situation, able to keep the atmosphere generally calm. Would whisper sweet, reassuring words to you the entire time. Mans just wants you to feel valid, safe, and loved when with him. Another person who would let you sit on his lap or curl up to him on your own terms. Would offer you one of his hoodies if you wanted something you're able to curl up in. Sanada always tries to get you to smile or laugh once you've calmed down to lighten your mood a bit.

Raichi -> Similar to Furuya where he wouldn't really know what to do. Might be a bit shaken up because he hates not knowing how to help you. If you ask him for something (like some water or a hug) boy is ZOOMING to fullfil your request. Because he's not entirely sure what to do he just gently brings your hands up to cup his face and softly says: "(y/n)-chan, please don't be upset!" Might not be the most effective tactic but it's the first thing that popped into his mind. Would definitely offer to get you a snack after the whole ordeal. He might be a tiny bit clingy afterwards because he felt so useless :(

Mei -> Generally a childish person but Mei takes this very seriously; babes is not messing around when it comes to your health. Goes by your requests and will do anything you ask of him, not a single complaint leaves his mouth. You'll usually end up lying on his chest while he mindlessly traces shapes on your back. In this position you can listen to his heart beat which is surprisingly very soothing and steady. He tends to whisper about how much he loves you or about how important and special you are.

no matter who he texts, it’s always extremely extra. not only does he always give more information than you asked for – ex. if you text him wya? he will give you a play by play of his entire route or something

 he also uses tons of emoticons. and yes I do mean emoticons, baby boy has a flip phone. ifhe does eventually get a smart phone, then this boy overuses tf out of emojis. he’s the sort of person that sees someone use a combination of emojis he likes and then tries to copy them, but uses it completely incorrectly, but its v cute.

if you send him a meme, he will respond with an unnecessary amount of hahas. 

when he’s texting his lil bae, they’re always on his mind so he ofc texts them every thought that comes to his mind! when he sees something that reminds him of you, he won’t hesitate to share it with you. 

if you have been together for a long time, then we will definitely text you words of affirmation and be very honest/blunt about how he feels about you. he’s also always sure to ask you about your day - and he seriously cares. but i still i feel like with a s/o he would prefer facetime to texting just because he likes to see you :)

overall, a very adorable texter and his enthusiasm is just as contagious when texting as it is in person. he’s kind of clueless so he doesn’t pick up on subtext. so be blunt, just like he will be with you~

kuromochi youichi

my bias might be showing here, but I feel like he is one of the most well-adjusted boys in terms of being ready for a serious relationship tbh (at least post-high school). i mean we all saw that he regularly corresponded with wakana wish that were me lmao

i think he would most often use proper capitalization, but not to the point where he uses a period after every text

would send his friends news articles about his favorite fighting games where u like gaming or not

a meme fiend in general. the sort of person who uses reaction images of people he knows. (if you’re dating, he would still have a stash of funny pics/screenshots of you on ft, but he’d ofc only use them with you <3). his convos with his friends are rarely serious

 i don’t think he’d be the type to text haha out loud, but he does use LOL on occasion. with close friends/his lil bae he might send a voice memo of him laughing hysterically if you send him something REALLY funny. ugh my annoying king <3

unlike eijun he’s the king of being perceptive / picking up subtext. 

similarly, i do think he’s pretty reliable, but for friends i feel like he might make a lil bit of a stink lmao. like lets say a friend wants him to pick something up for them, he might play like he won’t do it then miraculously shows up with the requested item. its giving tsundere vibes on the low.

with his partner: i feel like he would use emojis when he’s trying to be ~cute~. i think with a established partner he’d be pretty flirty still but he’s v much whipped for his partner so its way more mushy than it would be early in the relationship.

i mean it goes without saying that this man is snarky. he’s not a meme king himself but he enjoys when people send them to him and will usually play off the meme to make his own jokes.

i feel like he also likes deep-fried memes or the very abstract, post-modern memes. miyuki is good at making other people laugh, but he has a generally very-off brand humor and the things that make him cackle hardest are either at someone else’s expense (very similar to kuramochi, so they bond a lot over that) or just indiscernible without access to a huge layer of context/background

saves the reaction photos kuramochi sends him, but doesn’t usually use them. but seeing an ugly pic of eijun yelling never fails to make him grin LMAO

i think he also texts A LOT about baseball, even more so than these other baseball dummies. texts his teammates a lot of articles he reads or clips from games/cool plays. this is mostly about texts, but in terms of social media I think miyuki uses twitter/instagram the most especially for baseball related reasons, while kuramochi uses snapchat the most. 

he probably texts a lot about baseball as well, both seriously and playfully

i can see him using hahas and LOLs in equal measure, but he would also utilize the haha reaction if he had an iphone. this boy does value his wit so he would definitely have commentary about any memes or jokes he’s sent

you won’t win a joke war against him, he will definitely one-up whatever you send him with either a one-liner or another joke. how tf does he do it?

definitely ignores people/conversations if he really wants to - but ofc he never does that to his BAE

if miyuki give you a dry one-line response...he’s not interested at all or he’s feeling frustrated about something else. but when he’s really happy? he will text his friends all the time and spam them! i see him as someone who enjoys texting when he has the attention span/state of mind for it. and when he’s texting his s/o his texting gets even more ~flavorful~

wit his lil bae: i don’t think miyuki would switch it up much w his s/o. is probably even more teasing with you over text than he is with his friends, which is saying something.

Tetsu continues to stare out over the piece of the Pacific that touches San Francisco, wondering just how much it differs from that which touches Tokyo. He’s been here for little more than a year, but sometimes it feels as though he’s arrived only yesterday. Everything still straddles that line between terrifying and exhilarating and most days it’s a challenge he loves to overcome, but today, even if just for a moment, he wants some semblance of familiarity.

The ground beneath his feet is as stable as it’s ever been, so he walks, following the cracked pavement until an earthen trail splits off, enticing him toward an unknown destination. It’s nothing official as there are no attempts at paving the path, no railings or guideposts as there are elsewhere, signifying its existence is the cumulative result of curiosity spanning well beyond today.

That, too, is comforting—the acknowledgment that he isn’t alone in his desire to explore, that it’s shared by people around the world, transcending time as it came before him and as it will continue after him. Eyes shifting to the side, your lips part and shut again like you’re trying to recollect something. If he's to be honest, a part of him is relieved to know that he's not alone in his confusion.

Just as he’s on the cusp of finding the right words, he loses them—almost forgets that he even had something to say—when you repeat your apology in hesitant Japanese, following it with a flustered laugh.

“I’m better at understanding it than speaking it,” you say, more to yourself than to him, but he appreciates the sentiment.

“I could say the same for English,” he offers, mirroring you as your smile return in full.

“Thank you again for catching me,” you repeat in English, following it with another thanks in Japanese. He isn’t sure where to go from here, but he finds himself wanting to. A small drop of disappointment settles in his gut when you say, “I should let you get on with your day.”

With a farewell and a small wave, you’re gone, retracing the delicate path and going the way he came. Left in the relative silence provided by your absence, he thinks back to the lift of your cheeks and the gentleness in your eyes, deciding he wouldn’t mind seeing them again. Your voice produces a lovely harmony that complements the natural music provided by the waves and the wind as your words replay in his mind, and he decides that he wouldn’t mind hearing that again, too.

Not until he’s met with the frigid, unrelenting sea that pulls at the sand beneath his feet does he realize he regrets not asking for your name.
