Summary
🌐 Introduction:
Jason Scott humorously recounts his experience of being sued for over two billion dollars due to his archiving efforts on the website textfiles.com.
The lawsuit stemmed from claims of copyright infringement and trademark misuse related to old digital documents hosted on his site.
🛠️ The Origins of textfiles.com:
Jason began archiving old bulletin board system (BBS) files, leading to a comprehensive repository of historical computer culture.
The site expanded to include various types of content, from scanned advertisements to music and magazines.
🚨 The $2 Billion Lawsuit:
Scott received a series of legal threats from Paul Andrew Mitchell, an eccentric individual with questionable legal arguments.
Mitchell claimed millions of downloads of his self-published book "The Federal Zone" and demanded compensation for alleged damages.
Over time, Mitchell escalated his claims to over $2.6 billion, citing multiple violations under copyright and trademark laws.
🔧 Legal Tactics and Responses:
Scott described the tactics used by Mitchell, including intimidating legal jargon, inflated damage calculations, and bizarre claims.
Emphasized the importance of understanding legal rights and seeking community support when faced with unfounded legal threats.
🎯 Lessons Learned:
The experience highlighted the vulnerability of online creators to frivolous lawsuits.
Encouraged open discussions and collaboration among those facing similar issues to counteract intimidation tactics.

Jason Scott is super cool, and his data preservation efforts are legendary -- textfiles.com? The Internet Archive? Yeah, that Jason Scott.
It was nice to see him at VCF West XIII. He was kind enough to take a picture with me and my masterpiece.

How to add time lords as a playable race in d&d 2e. How programming worked in the 80s. entire tv show scripts. Entire obscure homebrew TTRPG games. This is great

you mentioned it and now i am curious, what were the attempts at indicating the tone of text online in the 70s/80s? i have never heard of something like this, i kinda wanna go on a searching rabbit hole wrt this but lack the correct search terms to do so lol
well i said 80s/90s... when it came to such things in the 70s it was far smaller groups of people who generally had direct acquaintence professionally and various small scale local bbs projects which didn’t quite have that same need to indicate tone anyway, go here, http://textfiles.com/ read through the various documents on the site which are primarily produced in the 80s and first 2/3 of the 90s prior to mass web use. you will see people indicating tone often with that “/s indicates i’m done being sarcastic” etc sort of thing, or using various letter codes without a symbol character next to it eg putting a G after a sentence often was supposed to be a grin so you’re telling a joke or taking something intentionally more lighthearted than it should be is an example. some of the files on there are even named as etiquette guides explaining how to do this~!
