The Science of Why Raphael Won’t Get Tf Out of My Head

It’s your local doctor in cambion physiology here. I’m going to take you through my theory about why Raphael is stuck in our heads. It’s all based on Science™, of course. Some of these carefully studied theories are dependent on the fact that you are the owner of a uterus. If you aren’t, then idk. I can’t help you. You’re a medical anomaly. It’ll all make sense in a moment, don’t worry about it.

There are a couple of things that I believe are necessary for prolonged focus on a specific character (Source: The Devil, Bite. 2024: Pulled it out of my ass):

Attraction: It helps if said character is hot.

Versatility: I’ll explain later.

A feeling of being able to relate to said character

Attraction

There’s this theory about how women’s attraction to men changes in accordance with their menstrual cycles (source and source). Basically the study says that when a woman is at her most fertile, she prefers more traditionally masculine looking men. However, the rest of her cycle she might prefer men who lean more towards the feminine (both in general qualities and physical attributes).

The whole point of this, is that at ones most fertile, it’s full on monkey brain genetics going “he looks strong and male, so he’ll make good offspring”, while for the rest of the time, it’s more attractive to find someone who actually has good partnership potential. Someone who is reliable and caretaking, and who would be stable in a longer relationship.

I suppose you could sum it up to one being a more romantic attraction while the other is more of a primal and carnal attraction.

Now I want you too look at this very educational graph that I used a couple of minutes to slap together:

Basically, my argument is that though Raphael is not stable or caretaking in any form, the difference between the two forms still visually fits into the two respective categories. His human form for the rest of the cycle, and his cambion form (the ascended form too if you’re freaky, I guess) that seems more traditionally masculine when fertility is highest.

That means that you can look at his dumb face throughout your whole cycle, but might feel a shift in which one you find more attractive (if all this science stuff is correct).

Even if the science behind all of this is bullshit, I still believe that different forms help when it comes to not getting tired of looking at someone.

Versatility

I’m just going to say it, even though my heart might disagree: Raphael would not have the effect he has if he was a more explored character with more screentime in canon. We would all love more Raphael, but I really think the reason for his longevity in our minds is that he is still somewhat mysterious.

Which parts are actually him and which parts are performance? What is he like behind closed doors? How much devil and how much man is he? We don’t really know. We have been given puzzle pieces, but there’s still a loooot of space free for interpretation, which is honestly what makes him great.

It’s been said before in this little corner of the internet: there are so many versions of Raphael, and the great thing is that people are never fighting over which Raphael is the “right” one. Some prefer Soft!Raphael, while others prefer Dark!Raphael. The versatility of his character’s representation allows for that, which I know at least has kept me interested for a long time when it comes to writing him.

Being able to relate

In much the same vein as above, people find different ways to relate to him. The thing on top of that is the feeling that we shouldn’t be able to relate to someone like him, which adds a certain level of taboo to it which is interesting.

He is both the smoothest mf alive and the biggest cringefail loser behind closed doors. He’s obsessive, weird, and too fucking much to be near for a longer period of time. He writes his contracts as songs because he likes ‘whimsy’. He’s got daddy issues and makes that everyone’s problem. There’s a lot to him that someone would at least be able to relate to at some level.

In conclusion

He is without a doubt the character I have hyperfixated on for the longest time, and I know it’s the same for a few others. I genuinely believe it’s because there is so much to him. If you get tired of one aspect of him, there are always other aspects of him to focus on, both physically and psychologically, instead.

And there is some variation to the attraction that I atleast can feel myself. If I have written a lot of darker stuff about him for a while, I get the urge to write something softer, and the cool thing is that you can do that and it still makes sense with the character. My preference for his forms vary often too.

Even when I tried to focus on other characters, I found myself returning to Raphael, because those other characters were often too fleshed out canon-wise. It quickly bores me because then there is a limit to what you can do with them.

There is a lot to Raphael and he’s like a glob of clay. You can mold him into whatever you like.

I think is about time I posted my headcanons for him! BOY I did not plan this post to be sooooooo long, I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY OMGGG!!! I LUV HIM SO MUCH (  ੭꒦ິ꒳꒦ີ)੭ ᰔ. I might have to make this into a multiple part series on my blog. These are all hc’s for adult Jeff, I have completely different ones for when he was a teen and I’ll make one for teen Jeff later on. Muscular and lean. He’s got more of a sleeper build tho.

Despite being lit of fire he managed to heal his hair, it’s healthy now.

He loves keeping his hair long. He’ll never CONSIDER cutting it short. His hair is one of his favorite parts of himself.

He for certain wants his hair to be down to his waist one day

Jeff’s hair is naturally brown. When the “incident” happened the fire made his hair temporarily black. (Ik that’s not how real logic works but cmon let me have fun >:c)

After a few months his hair went back to brown

Now he dyes his hair black bc he prefers it that way.

His tattoos don’t mean anything, he just got them because he thought they were cool.

He smells like incense and ash most of the time.

If he decided to finally wash his clothes then he smells like clean laundry.

He doesn’t wear cologne, he’s never cared for it.

He showers like twice a week. For the rest of the week he just wipes himself down this a cloth.

At least he uses a soap cloth (oh thank GOD)

When “the incident” happened his face scars would constantly bleed and wouldn’t close.

It was really sensitive and if he smiled or laughed to hard it would gush out again.

It took multiple years for the wound to permanently close.

It’s completely healed now it’s just deformed skin

The scars on his body are from fights, him doing stupid shit or self harm.

He’s not hairy, some underarm hair but that’s all

His veins are most visible in his forearms and hands

I don’t have a voice claim for him (YET!) but his voice is pretty deep and it has a raspy sound to it

He has dark circles under his eye from staying up for days at end

He got some sharp ass canine teeth. In my AU he got bit by a vampire. He didn’t get turned into one bc the transformation was stopped right after his vamp fang came in.

Warm to the touch. Doesn’t matter what season it is, his body manages to retain a significant amount of body heat.

His skin is very pale due to lack of sunlight and frequent blood loss.

When meeting him for the first time he comes off as an asshole.

He insults everyone and it’s hard to hell if he’s joking or not.

And if he’s really pissed he’ll get REAL creative with the insults.

Swears like a sailor

He’s distant and off putting to people that aren’t in his circle.

He loves showing off and will do it no matter what. Even if the circumstances are dangerous.

Jeff loves stroking his ego, it’s so obnoxious but he could care less.

Lowkey thinks he better than everyone

LAWD he’s handsome and he knows it

Doesn’t care about ur personal space

Will creep up on u to whisper shit in ur ear to scare you. And other stuff like that.

Gives people the nastiest stares of all time. And I dare u too say something to him about it, he’ll square TF UP.

Says some really offensive shit but he doesn’t care if you get upset because of it.

And he’ll say it loud and proud no matter how much of a dumbass he looks like saying it.

Jeff’s one of the most defiant proxies in the mansion

He listens to NO ONE and hates more than anything to be bossed around.

Though he partially listens to Slenderman, yk, bc he has to so he can live in the mansion. Masky too bc he’s Slenderman’s right hand man.

Can’t laugh like a normal person to save his life

Like he’s literally out of breath, red face, everything

“How do I befriend him?!?” I hear you say

Like I said before he loves his ego being satisfied so u could just blow smoke up his ass.

But to him you’ll be more like a “fan” than a friend.

And he will just use you for his benefit. He’ll step all over u since you’ve shown ur willing to be submissive to him ＿|￣|○

Show him you’re not to be fucked with but not to be intimidated by.

For Jeff it’s more about if you guys get along and have a good time together than having the same interests.

Jeff only plays favorites if he has a crush on you

Oh boy is he one petty motherfucker… He holds grudges over anything with anyone and is very vengeful.

He’s quick to temper too. He’ll go into a rage induced episodes and they can last for days at a time.

That’s due to his IED (Intermittent Explosive Disorder) and just him being a fucked up person.

He also has BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder)

He’s not trying to manage his IED by being more laidback and comedic but that’s not really helping.

Not a big fan of animals. So if you were to ask him what is fav animal was he wouldn’t say any.

He’s not good enough to be the lead but his ego says otherwise.

Started out being emo in his early teens, now he’s more of a metal head.

(I don’t know much about nu-metal or any metal at ALL so I can’t rlly say who his favs are. SORRY IM AN EMO FUCK AT HEART OKAY???)

Listens to goth music occasionally too

Loves going to concerts no matter who’s performing

If you happen to bring up a band he’s seen live before he will 100% without fail say “I saw them live at _!” And will proceed to info dump about what went down.

Even worse if they were in their prime when he went.

Fashion wise he dresses alternative but it’s nothing fancy.

A band tee + hoodie or jacket, jeans, shoes (cons, or boots), for accessories belt and some spikes bracelets. That’s about it :v

And yes he does consider his piercings as accessories.

Paints his nails black on special occasions

Likes to collect weird stuff

His biggest collection is of knifes

Some of them are ornamental and some he actually uses to kill

He gets the money to fuel his collection off the dead bodies of his victims

Also has a strange fascination with history

Specifically historical torture methods & atrocities

Sometimes he uses the same torture methods he learned about on his victims.

He collects dvds of slasher & horror movies

And of course you can’t forget about the vintage TV to play them on!

He’s not a fan of snuff films or gore videos

It just takes out the art out of film making. Why should he watch uninspired shock gore for 0% satisfaction when he can go cause it for 100% satisfaction?

To Jeff killing is something he does for 3 things. Survival, satisfaction, and emotional regulation.

Once he’s got you in his grasp you won’t make it out alive.

Jeff commits the worst murders when he’s having a IED or BPD episode.

He’s not a kidnapper type serial killer

He likes to get the job done by the end of the day at the longest

He loves the taste of blood and often licks it off his knife

He thinks he can train himself to be able to taste the differences between blood types.

He just likes inflicting pain on complete strangers, it’s thrilling to him.

And it’s usually not a stab and go kill, when he first started out that’s how it was bc it was more for survival.

Now Jeff has the taste for blood. And he’s got some horrifyingly creative ways to extract it.

Nowadays you’ll be lucky if it’s a stab and go. His goal is to make sure u feel the agony, every. second. of. it.

He would never consider hurting someone close to him, that would severely fuck with him.

Since the murder of his family he has no one. So he cherishes the few people close to him a lot more than he used to.

He’s never had any regrets about any of the many murders he has committed.

The one and only time he’s ever felt bad about inflicting violence on someone is his older brother Liu.

He’s able to blow different shapes out of smoke

Prefers cigarettes over anything else

Hates vapes tho, he think they make you look like a massive pussy.

He’ll flat out refuse to fw you if you whip out your fruity-tuti flavored e-stick when yall go on a smoke break.

Jeff’s not a big drinker

Drinking just ups his already high sex drive to the max and he acts like a complete idiot when he’s drunk. Then after all that his hangover is fucking hell.

At the most he’ll get a bit tipsy cause the boost in arousal makes sex tenfold better.

Jeff’s never done any hard drugs and doesn’t care to.

Who needs a drug addiction when you have a murder addiction?

♥︎A/N: Btw in my au Jeff had a much shitter life than the og Jeffery Woods so all of this with context makes sense.

Jeff doesn’t s/h anymore but did it heavily in his teens before he went crazy.

His life was genuinely a miserable hellscape that was picking at his sanity and at every turn it only got worse.

His mother and father didn’t care about him at all. The only person that actually cared and loved Jeff was Liu. But Liu rarely showed any affection towards Jeff so it didn’t really matter how Liu felt about him.

No one knew what Jeff was doing to himself up until he ended up in the hospital with the gashes on his cheeks.

ES SoundStar are very bird coded to me...and I think alot about that. 🙂‍↕️🤧 (ignore how crows and owls have perm rivalry) (my friend also said it makes sense bc why else does Starscream keep building nests (in my au) -> Soundwave get to work!)

The way all my SoundStars are different yet similar in all universes bothers me sometimes but I also love talking/being asked about them at the same time

Meanwhile: Tfp SoundStar is rather avion-bug v. lizard coded in comparison

TFP Starscream really really looks like a secretary bird with his crest/spikiness + the way he kicks his legs in the show lmao

Though: g1 SoundStar is super cat on all fronts in terms of personality and dynamics, IDW SoundStar is probably a good mix of all previous attributes with some minute differences. But again these are all based off of my previous writings and personal hcs and subject to change as I go or write lol

Bonus fact: my IDW Soundwave speaks German; he really only has ever used it to insult Starscream though lol at least post-war, it makes for some fun scenarios (like calling mr supreme leader a brat or a little-)

I think one day I would love to throw all my current SoundStars into a game show and let them duke it out to prove who knows their SO better, and the slow realization of how different everyone is and why would be the main kicker...

Everyone is baffled at ES Starscream for example over certain dynamics and methods of getting together, TFP is made fun of meanwhile for his general incompetence and IDW for well his committal of tax fraud of all things...😭 like really!? SG Starscream is too honest when he hears all the parallel counterparts talk and it gets him in trouble; they're all melodramatic, but he's the only one willing to admit it to the show hosts (IDW Thundercracker and ES Thundercracker) TF one wants someone to take him out of here rn, RN!!

I kinda have an idea how old all of them would be as well in terms of written development or where they swim in my brain like little sardines stuck in a tank

ES and TFP are the eldest (debatable who older than who), but I think TF one is right after and then it's whoever after that (prob IDW -> SG -> g1)

At least all the Soundwaves' find it easier to get along (ignore they're getting ideas on how to handle their respective Starscreams' as well, minus SG Soundwave, he's still processing half of what these guys have done or where things have been done and how LOL) (like wdym that guy over there can be maneuvered like that!...?)

Also: Soundwave is super/overall very corviknight coded according to @sparkybot (I see it tbh)

As someone whose first interaction with Prowl was in the G1 cartoons, you absolutely get it. There needs to be more of Prowl written like that and not always delegated to being a prick.

first of all, i absolutely agree. secondly, actually, the situation with how the fandom sees prowl is very curious. and kinda unique? i may be wrong, but it seems to me as if his idw version has affected his character much more than other idw versions affected people's views on other characters. i'll explain that in a moment but let's start from afar :D

i think the version of prowl you meet for the first time can really make a big difference in how you see his character in the long run. i first met prowl through idw and it played tricks on me. you know, i actually like idw prowl, but i have 2 problems with him:

a) he's a poorly written character. the idea is good, i really think so, but the writers didn't do a good job. he has a lot of interesting moments, but if you look at him in the perspective of the whole story... nope. bad job. i'm not going to talk on this topic, i've seen discussions about this on tumblr more than once, so some wise people have already said it all for me a long time ago :D

b) he's... technically the only nasty, manipulative jerk prowl among his other variations? but his popularity makes it seem like all prowls have always been like that. and when i first started getting to know this franchise i thought so too... i thought he was like that everywhere and all the time

when i first started reading tf comics i only did it with knowledge of tfp, rid-15 and rescue bots and i immediately jumped right into mtmte. i didn't watch g1 or any other shows. i didn't understand who was who or what was going on. and i automatically started hating prowl, because, well, everybody hated him?? even comics characters?? i thought it was the right thing to do. i didn't know anything about him, but because of his image in the comics and fandom i just accepted that he was a prick, a bad guy, a bastard and hated him. and i didn't want to get to know him any further

so when i finally started watching g1 and especially reading marvel comics i was so surprised... what the?? who's that?? why is prowl like this?? and i didn't understand what was going on at all again. yeah, it took me some time to realise that in this fandom in different continuations sometimes the only similarity from the same character may be the name alone (tfa prowl, tfa elita, tfp arcee, yk)

so it was marvel comics that made me love prowl. this is my favorite version of him. i'll write more about him someday but in short i'm just in love with how loyal, faithful, hopeful and kind he is here, how he fights despair, how continues to move forward no matter what, how hardships bend but don't break him... ugh. so many good stuff with him. especially the exodus arc (i don't remember what it's officially called but it's the one with the op death, leader grimlock and withering cybertron). anyway, perfect prowl in my mind. without him i'd probably just forget about prowl and focus on other characters. so i really miss him being like this. and even tho rn i appreciate and love any version of him, i think he's interesting both as a calm, cold and collected person and as a ninja bot and as an asshole, etc, etc, but still. it took me a while to get into it and i don't think i was the only one. it's sad that idw image is hurting this character and his legacy. again, i still like this version of him, but i don't like this situation

so. i wish people would stop automatically attributing the same characterisation to him everywhere. for some reason i get the impression that prowl is the only one this happens to? megatron, for example, can be a gratuitously bad guy, a tragic villain, a redeemed hero (which i'll be honest i like in tfe but hate in idw) - and everyone is used to it. no one equates him to one characteristic, knowing that it can easily change, he's accepted differently. but for some reason it doesn't always work with prowl... anyway, i really hope we see more variety with prowl in the future. preferably in the direction of g1. i really like tfe and idw2 takes on him! and i'm very interested to see what he'll be like in skybound (well, if he ever appears there, haha)

Y'know what sucksssss? Being into a lot of kinks but in the most specific niche way. Like I love tfs, but I don't like mental changes involved with them. And I love character customization stuff including intelligence and arousal, but I don't like personality overwriting. I think what I'm meaning is, I'm fine with changing attributes that already are an ebb and flow, but I hate when instincts are added. I love puppygirls who just naturally wag their tail and bark, but I wouldn't enjoy being made to feel that instinct, I'd rather choose to do it. Y'know what I mean?

6. Absolutely favorite TF story?

There are SO many. But I think one of the iconic ones from way way back was Piper vs The Brain Bandit. It's one of the first brain drain stories I can remember and it's everything I want out of one of those stories. Similarly, this attribute theft story might have gotten me into breast theft in the first place.

22. Mental changes to match physical changes, or a human mind trapped in an inhuman body?

I would usually say mental changes to match. For a hucow transformation for instance, you definitely have to get cow-brained. But if it's like a full inanimate, like being turned into a sex toy, keep the brain; be aware of how far you've fallen.

Ohhh my god I physically recoiled when Erik tried to kiss Thea. What happened to my boy 😭😭😭 He used to just let things happen to him but now he's actively initiating, which would've been good development if he wasn't initating unwanted advances on every girl at the party (as he says). Like the change in his character could be attributed to him having a friend group now and not being bullied, but when we look at his past where had equally shitty friends, he stood up against them. originally he was strictly an oc to ship with canon in 2022 -- i (loud sigh) had shipped him with caustic, of all people, but it was fleeting and he had an entirely different story + motives + design back then. then when i fell head over heels for ballistic i decided to bring him back and tweak his backstory / design, and made him both my self-insert and a functioning oc. i do see him as me! just, me if i was old and living in the tf / apex universe ...

i'll put his backstory / more stuff under the cut so this post doesn't get so super long, but thank you for asking !!!

(art by mangoscales) ^ THE THEM. anyways that's lucky! his real name is taisce (irish for treasure, not a common / actually used name but he chose it himself when he transitioned) o'corrigan, with "lucky" being the stage name he used as a wrestler / professional fighter on solace.

he was born on gaea to wealthy jewelers (hence the gold attributes) and was expected to take up the helm on the family estate, but found jewelry-making boring and was more drawn to the seedy underground fighting rings and such that were active despite gaea's strict police force. since he (and his family) were rich, they had family friendships with other affluent families (which is how he met ballistic in the first place.) they were childhood friends and lucky spurred on / encouraged him to be reckless despite ballistic's hesitance and penchant to be horribly stuck-up. when ballistic's parents died and he left for the thunderdome, they got into a big fight about taking responsibility / leaving lucky alone (as he didn't get on with anybody else like he did ballistic) / what exactly the two of them were going to do with their lives. lucky ended up staging his own disappearance to leave for solace to try and make amends with him; but went "screw it" when he was there and instead started to capitalize on the thunderdome's growing popularity with citizens instead of just IMC members -- brought wrestling to the forefront of the public's eye as a "safer, more - involved form of "bloodsport". he was good at what he did and became a sort of micro-celebrity; while still keeping his true identity under wraps (and keeping tabs on ballistic.) the whole thing faded when the latter went into retirement and lucky focused full-time on his own career; eventually returning to gaea ~30 years later when he gets wind of the news that his family's business has gone bankrupt. reintroducing himself to his only surviving family (his sister) he decides to join the games to earn the money back for her business and to convince her that even after running away and kind of starting this whole mess, he's still a good guy.

things happen, he has to work with ballistic again, and eventually has to face the fact that he still has feelings for him after all these years. happy ending they get together and learn how to love again! 🫶🎉

i will admit his backstory is a little oc - leaning but i always like putting way more thought into things than necessary -- plus if this is an idealized version of me why can't i make him overly complex? originally he wasn't a fighter and had a kit more similar to mirage's -- i can't remember what it was -- and he's been through a lot of changes, but i'm happy with where he's at now. a bunch of self-indulgent similarities to me as well because he is also a self-insert now !!!

and a silly thing: the bullet necklace he always wears was a gift from ballistic when they were kids, but lucky was the one to actually make the necklace, which is why it's all lopsided and the chain is connected to the tip of the bullet instead of the base 😭

LOL yeah... G1 Mirage's voice sounds so... dated, doesn't it? so old timey and old money. I definitely don't think of any TFs sounding like their G1 voices.

I suspect I'm in the minority here but I don't think of TFs as having human voices at all. nor do I think of them as being, like, a series of Machine Noises and static and beeps or something. I haven't figured out yet how to describe what my brain thinks of xD

but if I had to translate it to a human voice... I've always imagined Mirage's as being very calm and not deep or gravelly (not high pitched, either), with a slight whispery component. the closest canon voice I can think of to this is Netflix Mirage's voice, of which I can only find a single video of, in which he's also trying to be a Decepticon so the VA is doing a false deepness. and he sounds INCREDIBLY BLAND. I wish I could find a clip of him speaking for a longer period of time... I don't have access to Netflix, but I remember him speaking to someone for a short time. It was a scene where he and the other guy are kinda acknowledging the prejudices they had against each other. Impactor??¿¿

TEG Mirage is noted for his accent. which, again, I don't think of it as being an accent we have on earth. the closest you might come is a slight to moderate Russian accent in English. a very aristocratic sound

...since I don't have a way to explain this that makes any sense on this planet and in this dimension (an eternal struggle to express oneself clearly, ahh!!), how about a very silly but hopefully tangible kind of answer.

sorry I don't have a great answer for you. if I think of a human with a voice that kinda works for what I imagine, I'll update this post!

Bungie commented on the confusion in a recent roundtable Q&A that I attended. Naturally, the studio's representatives didn't offer any actual answers, but they did at least show that they're aware of the confusion and contradictions. "Welcome to the problem that all Bible scholars have trying to figure out—what may or may not have happened and lining that up to actual historical events," says senior narrative designer Robert Brookes. And now it's starting to become clear that those may not actually be just concrete ideas, but metaphors or things that are far less concrete and clear. And as we get closer into The Final Shape, more answers on that will start coming up. And The Final Shape, of course, will have a lot of answers about the nature of those conflicts." Brookes refused to offer any more hints on how this will all resolve. Except for this: "The contradictory nature has always kind of been intentional. Whatever the Witness says, maybe don't trust it."

The relevant bits! I'm not sure if this really needed full clarification, but to have it is nice either way. Unveiling is metaphorical. As it says itself. The fact that it's confusing and contradictory is 100% intended. The writers didn't forget about it and didn't make a mistake. The whole point of Unveiling is that it's an allegory, a story, propaganda and everything that comes with it.

This doesn't really say all of it is entirely wrong, so we might still be looking at some general hints about the origin of everything, but it's not a scientific or historical document and never has been. It literally starts with telling us it's just a story:

Once upon a time,* a gardener and a winnower lived** together in a garden.*** * It was once before a time, because time had not yet begun. ** We did not live. We existed as principles of ontological dynamics that emerged from mathematical structures, as bodiless and inevitable as the primes. *** It was the field of possibility that prefigured existence.

I believe this only confirms that the Witness did indeed write it. This was always a possibility, just not something we could really either confirm or deny. The change in tone can now be attributed to the fact that it's 100% deliberately propaganda so it's selling itself in a way to be relatable (or possibly one of the billions of people that the Witness consists of is what wrote the Unveiling to sound like this). But there's a lot more to learn here and we will learn more in TFS. Desperately in need of some Traveler's POV on this whole thing and on the Witness.

So, did anything from Unveiling really happen? Well, no. Sort of. It never did, because it "happened" before existence. Is there some truth to certain details? Maybe, but it's wrapped in a religious propaganda piece so ultimately it's just not a good source for anything and these details will only make sense when we find a more reliable storyteller.

The Yappening

Just something I thought about because I'm watching a playthrough:

Layle kinda acts like a foreigner, if that makes sense.

Has ties to people instead of places and a general lack of personal belongings almost at all. Him making jewelry reminds me of how people will wear their wealth so they can turn it for money when things get rough.

"Are crystal bearers that rare in the city?" Brother there are like FIVE of you guys in the game tf you mean 'are they rare'?

I don't think Layle is illiterate (Keiss sends some pretty thorough directions), but I wouldn't be surprised if he struggled (esp with how much he hates letters and goes as far as to consider them boring, as if he's spending too much time reading them).

Dresses completely differently aside from his jacket (even Keiss shares some design features with Vaigali). There's is zero cultural/tribal cohesion, basically.

He engages in a lot of antisocial activities which can be attributed to him being a gremlin but also misaligned personal boundaries. He's not malicious, though. He's just HIM, yeah?

Has a jacket from Cid and STILL asks for Stiltzkin for directions. Man is hella lost all the time (for the player's sake in most cases) but the game will randomly give you directions you don't need and then let you flail elsewhere. This is probably just poor player directing, though.

My running take on it that has more basis in "I want this to be true" rather than fact is that he is from Leuda. Selkies are the only tribe with a known established separate language entirely undecipherable by anyone else in CC (stones of Conall Curach) and Vaigali, Keiss, and Layle have items sharing a text-like pattern that's made of sharp edges. In Vaigali and Keiss' case, its the cyan inscriptions on their armor pieces (Keiss totally yoinked Vaigali's wrist guard btw this was how I found out) and Layle has his ring as someone who has an entire mechanic centering on making jewelry. I also think he's supposed to be half Selkie because of all this but they didn't do it because they made too many prominent half Clavat half Selkie characters compared to literally any other combo.

Layle looks like and shares his attitude with Yah Dis in particular while also sharing the adjusted Selkie naming habits. I suspect that might be a localization issue, though, and they just changed their own rules for some reason.

is it possible for Henry to have DID or another disassociative disorder due to the severe abuse he experienced as a child? I was reading through some of your theories, and maybe I'm just projecting, but I can't help but see the signs lol. Like how a lot of people with DID undergo exorcisms because it's mistook for being possessed. Maybe the Duffers even took inspiration from the disorder. I don't know I'm yapping

While I do think they took inspiration from different disorders for Henry's behavior, I'm more likely to attribute his symptoms to OCD/intrusive thoughts/hallucinations.

See: Henry's visions and his persistent, obsessive fear surrounding them/the things they tell him to do, the animal killings acting as compulsions in that they "stave off" whatever the Mindflayer tells Henry it's going to do if he doesn't comply. It's giving "I have to [insert behavior] or [insert bad thing] will happen...but if I [insert behavior], [insert bad thing] won't happen".

The things that seem DID-coded about Henry are most often linked to the Mindflayer, which doesn't seem to be something he developed as a trauma response as much as it seems to be something foreign that reflects all of his trauma back at him and weaponizes it against him.

However, and I do have a section in the big post talking about it, the other characters in TFS seem to be more similar to the characters in NINA—which is to say: not strictly real, based on memories (both past and future). That's where we begin to see aspects of Henry himself bleeding into the other characters around Henry in a way that makes it a little harder to tell if they're strictly memories, if they're Mindflayer avatars, or if Henry's own mind has given them a life of their own headmate-style.

If there were a DID reference, thought, I'd say it's in Patty vs the Mindflayer (re: Split, which was on the movie board.)

There's a neat little web of connections there between Henry insisting he wasn't there/hit his head and doesn't remember, the Mindflayer possessions, Patty's frankly insane number of Mindflayerisms, and the alter Patricia.

Another aspect here is the "they're still with me, in here" line, which I would clock more as a pyschotic break/almost schizophrenia-like symptom...and it's also linked to the Mindflayer, given that it's the Mindflayer who's shown to consume people and creatures that way with Henry as an intermediary.

So in short: it's not to say that DID references aren't there, but the way they are there makes me reluctant to "diagnose" Henry with DID.

Same with Henry's personality flip in NINA (which is more giving pyschotic break than DID on surface view anyway) wherein there's the whole aspect of changing physical details like the hairstyle thing and the blood on the suits/moving bodies/etc.

It's not just Henry acting differently or him insisting he's someone else, etc. It encompasses physical details that Henry would have no control over...Hence why I discarded DID theory almost immediately (not to mention the poor taste a plot like that would be in).)

You are absolutely correct! Ngl I completely understand because actually it was a cultural shock for me when I learned cousin relationships/marriages were even considered incest because I had grown up in a culture where it is extremely common. I often feel Westerners either think of themselves in a vacuum where rather than their societal views and values being products of numerous sociohistorical factors and subject to change as time goes on, that they ‘magically’ have ‘the correct opinion on everything’. Even when they acknowledge their own issues they see it as ‘multifaceted and nuanced’.

Either that or they think they’re ‘so forward and modern’ they got to ‘all the correct conclusions on everything before everyone’ while countries in the Global South are ‘still so backward and have been holding the same values and views for as long as they’ve existed’, and thus need Western intervention to solve their problems or to educate them. They see themselves as the ideal, as the end goal of what a ‘modern and near-perfect society’ looks like and believe all people should strive towards becoming like them. Pisses me tf off!!

Tbh I also think there’s this attitude that surrounds ‘taboo’ topics (such as incest, sexual assault) where people absolutely refuse to engage with them because they think it means that you’re justifying or defending them. When in actuality, it’s important to critically examine all topics, even those that you know ‘are bad’, learning exactly why it is bad, breaking it down, rather than attributing it to ‘it makes me feel icky’ or ‘everyone knows it’s wrong’. And it’s this inability to do so that makes these sort of ideas of Western superiority go unchallenged because they refuse to unlearn anything that’s uncomfortable and just blame their school systems for not teaching them better

I don't think modern and classic Eggman were fucking, I know they were lol. Doesn't get more obvious than how Eggman gushes and swoons over himself and calls himself handsome (just listen to his Team Sonic Racing voice clips), always seemed flirty with his classic self in Gens and literally called him "my dear doctor" in the rewrite. He's always been attracted to himself so they would've immediately been into each other the second they met as physically separate beings, there's absolutely no way they haven't fucked

They'd explore each other with a lot of curiosities for how they change over time. Modern would like introducing things he's into but classic hasn't discovered yet so he can have fun sooner in time and they carry out all the selfcest fantasies they always had. I can imagine it not being long until they were intensely making out and fucking, I can imagine a lot of their offscreen time involved them fucking in all the ways they've definitely always dreamed of

But I also like the idea of them getting curious in white space if they somehow haven't fucked already or just also doing so there as well as they're seeking stress relief after the frustration of their defeat and being at a loss on how to escape for a while. Just being all over each other and trying out everything they can imagine when they're lost in time and space and have all the nonexistent time in the void to just explore each other with nothing to interrupt them and they can be as loud and dirty as they want

They can think much more clearly to figure a way out after emptying their balls lol. I've been planning on writing a short fic based on that concept too

I personally really dislike Eggman x Ella. Very forced and OOC pair for the X comics and not even canon or accurate to the X show because Ella only feared and hated him and Eggman didn't give a fuck to even acknowledge her beyond when he was directly attacked by her and there was anything but attraction between them

It's uncomfortable for its generic "fat woman x man so obviously they're the only people for each other and would be into each other" vibes. And it always was uncomfortable how the Archie comics in general acted like every character needed to be paired up

It also disregards Eggman's love for himself and his narcissism, he'd never value anyone as highly or higher than himself. He's the only one who has a place as photos on his wall to swoon over, he'd never gush and swoon and hype anyone else up that isn't himself like that

It wouldn't work for game Egg in the slightest and I don't imagine him ever being vastly different in personality to ever work with Classic either because it's never been implied that he wasn't always narcissistic and self loving with no love to give anyone but himself

The closest that can be attributed to his potential type in the actual games (besides non canon spin offs with Bowser) are muscular men with his gay Hot Shelter hall dedicated to statues of them posing suggestively, so like an exact opposite of fat women lol

I don't ship Eggman with women in general because it's not implied he's attracted to them in game canon so you can believe whatever. But this is definitely one of the worst ships involving one for how OOC and forced it is only due to heteronormavity + stereotypes

I don't know about the other non canon adaptions besides X where the planet split into two and Eggman found out the world with all the humans on it was the one he was born on but they never explained how he got there and why he doesn't remember it. However it wasn't actually called Mobius in X

And as for the game canon where all of my personal interest and focus lies, there isn't two worlds and the one world that does exist is Earth that Eggman, Sonic and co and all the humans all live on together so it's a lot simpler and preferable to me than the existence of a whole new planet

And I'm not a fan of how people see him as eviller, as if regular Eggman isn't extremely evil himself and ruling the world and making everyone suffer long term under his harsh rule isn't way more evil than just destroying it and that being the end of it

He absolutely has robots he can fuck, this is canon. He created Egg Pawns with a libido that can swoon with love hearts in their eyes and persue in Generations. It was definitely so they'd be attracted to him and all swarm him to love him up and play with him. Cubot is also literally canonically into him so

I like to think he doesn't just have designated robots and machines for fucking, though he definitely would have those too, but also I like to imagine there are some secret slots and attachable parts to most of his models, so he can fuck/be fucked by pretty much all of them

I think if it being another of the reasons he's fine living so far away from living beings and only being around his own creations. He's far from lonely in the bedroom with all the robots and machines he has as well as toys to play with that he could ever need to satisfy his desires

I definitely agree the integration of the lesser gods absolutely dropped the ball. If I had to guess it’s because arena focused so much on Dura vs Annih that the Journey team said ‘nah too much of these two slap em on the back burner.’ Probably because they expected most of the player base to have already played the Arena lore, but then they completely ret-conned for Journey anyways which makes life so much more confusing???

The verdict on whether or not Annih is even Journey canon is still out but the baddies are still aligned with the graveborns + hypogeans so maybe? I was genuinely had to open a new tab to look him up because I don’t think he’s even once been mentioned so I had no clue who tf that was. I’m suprised there’s just a total lack of what seems like an insanely pivotal character.

I think this is part of the major problem with Journey which is how the decentralized of Dura was handled. Her gift of the Yggs (idk how to spell it) tree to the wilders is changed to Mistarte’s Lucent Tree, and there was a magical Oasis gift but it was from Merlin to just the Uru clan and has way less significance in the story.

When all her most compelling acts of kindness are attributed to other deities Dura herself has little to stand on which is a damn shame. I feel like it wouldn’t have been as big an issue if they actually introduced anything new to Dura’s story but this paired with the total lack of Annih creates a massive hole in the lore. Which again is a shame because it makes the lore confusing to both new and returning players, so no one wins.

I do like the idea of an AFK patheon though. I feel like Misarte and Dura would have gotten along. Our girlboss deserves friends
