A Special Announcement~ | Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Tag Force Special Re-Translation Project!

I've been itching to get around to posting about this for a few months now, but wanted to wait until I'd worked on enough for it, but also had the idea to create an announcement trailer to go with it for added good measure--after recording and editing clips for a couple weeks and leveling the audio last night, heremst we are! (For some clips, I forgot to turn off the PPSSPP emulator's DevMenu option so that shows up in the top-left, buuut I didn't feel like re-recording those, lmao.)

Details worth reading below the cut here, but tl;dr work has been in progress for over a year in between things, work will continue to be in progress for a while, and the release will happen when everything's ready, but stay tuned, fun's getting started etc etc~

So, I'm sure most of us are familiar with the as-yet-unlocalized-by-Konami TFSP, the seventh and last entry in the Tag Force series on the PSP that came out early in ARC-V's run (featuring the first five series which was a cool first), as well as the current translations out there originally worked on by the guys at XenoTranslations (omarrrio and ScrewTheRules/ClickClaxer01 at GBATemp handling the card and story/etc translations, respectively) and how there are... some issues with what's out there. Everything from the DM story mode being loaded with YGOTAS references (no shade to YGOTAS and much respect to LK/Martin for his ongoing work on it still making me laugh sometimes, ofc) to the off-the-cuff edginess of 2014-2015-era internet culture and the problematic (in some cases, derogatory) language that permeated it--though to its credit, some parts do have some level of translation attempted, but taken as a whole, it can definitely turn people off from giving the game a try and seeing what it brings to the table (which is still a good amount despite the corners Konami cut here/there compared to prior TF games).

I actually did attempt a translation of my own back in 2015 (if you've been following me for a long time, you might remember it lol), tackling the GX story text starting with Judai's heart events, but eventually put it on the backburner as I focused more on my GX subbing work and beginning to finalize everything (which I'm still doing). Sometime in 2022, a friend over on NeoArkCradle (the "anonymous YGO fan" in the opening screen) was poring over the story text and patching it up the best he could to remove the references and inaccuracies with more coherent work, and after a while of seeing what he was working with in the Discord, I was a bit blown away by just how inaccurate much of it was--so alongside him, and using the better tools available since then (including some really awesome work from both nzxth2 [who did a proper re-translation of 5D's TF6 not too long ago and was kind enough to release his tools for it] and our coding helper Xan1242 who we eventually reached out to for some help), I decided to *cracks knuckles* get involved and help give everything a more accurate and professional translation, much like I do with my GX subs, working directly off the Japanese text and files. I've been taking cracks at everything in between the GX episodes I've been finalizing going back to at least last January (and I'd used my little hiatus after finalizing GX Season 2's subs to really get at some other stuff throughout the game), starting with re-translating DM's story text but also properly translating other aspects of the game, from the character names (using the original Japanese names, including those of the TF-exclusive characters, partly since Konami made a whole mess of them in English TF1-5), in-duel dialogue, pack descriptions, and more to images with Japanese text (such as localizing the in-duel cut-in onomatopoeia as you see in the video above, or other little images throughout) using some Photoshop skills I've picked up. And it's been a joint effort, as said NAC friend and I have been bouncing off how we'd like to see this go between us to stay on the same page and all, while also checking with other translators there for second/third opinions as needed.

Our plan is to release two versions of a translation--one which uses the OCG [translated] card names in Story Mode, in-duel, and other text but not in the game's card system (mainly to deal with story-relevant notes like Osiris vs Slifer with the Gods or things like not-Utopia Hope being symbolic between Yuma and Astral, akin to how I do my GX subs), and one which uses the TCG card names in everything (like how the official subs go about it). While we're mostly working with the Japanese game files due to how the Xeno team went about decoding everything, we'll be using the card-system-related files from the fixed ISO provided by FLSGaming which fixed some issues that had been present there. And Xan has helped us with a plugin that will be used to apply our translations to the system files that were hard to edit otherwise (things like the character and recipe names, as well as the pack names pulled from for the Card Description screen), but more on how that'll work once this is ready for release, lol. At some point, I'd like to also look at HDifying textures and things, but that's definitely a bonus-level thing for after the main work here is done.

Currently, Story-Mode-wise, I've gone through everything up to Yusei's events--so Dark Yugi/Kaiba/Jounouchi/Ishizu/Mai in DM, Judai/Manjoume/Asuka/Misawa/Ryou in GX, and Yusei in 5D's have been fully retranslated, though I took initial cracks at Yuma and Yuya's events to get content for this video lol (I've also been intentionally holding off on as much ZEXAL as I can until I've properly watched the whole show so I have context). I haven't tackled overworld text yet, though (like pre-duel or the tournament-related text, which is all in the same file as all the story text). I've also been handling the in-duel dialogue as I go through the character stories, so also just up to Yusei, though I did take initial cracks at Aki's, Yuma and Shark's, and Yuya and Yuzu's for the video.

Other things tackled that were sprinkled into the video, along with some other notes:

Pack names and descriptions have been retranslated, though the descriptions may see minor edits closer to release for a little variety between worlds given the different characters at the shop. Character recipe names were also retranslated, with Yugipedia's translations for them used as an occasional second opinion, though ones based on pack names had to be abbreviated in spots.

Menu text, from the Options to Help screens and stuff in between, has been retranslated, as have in-duel text strings (so, you'll see a full "Activate Effect" instead of "Activate" or "Switch to Attack/Defense Position" instead of "Switch to ATK/DEF Position", etc--also fixed the "BATTELE PHASE" graphic typo, and NAC friend created a new translation for the "Turn Change" graphic for accuracy since ENG TF1-5 made that into "Next Player's Turn").

Database stuff, such as the Sound Test, Tutorials, Duel Missions, etc., have been retranslated closer to the Japanese text; originally I retranslated the Tutorial text via hex editor, with compromises done on quite a bit of it due to the space limits, but as Xan recently updated a text extractor tool of theirs to more cleanly pull out and reinsert that text, I've been going through and fleshing out those translations more (on my commutes to/from work mostly, to be productive lol).

As mentioned, I've been localizing/translating Japanese-text images throughout the game as I come across them, like with the in-duel onomatopoeia that come up during cut-ins or images in the shop/duel/etc screens using Japanese text, to make sure the game is fully translated.

The series logos, used during the title sequence and in the Series Select screens, were updated with translated fan edits shared on Deviantart (which we'll credit in the final release) for DM and GX, while the 5D's-ARC-V logos were edited to enlarge the "Yu-Gi-Oh!" text on them that was pretty hard to see originally.

The game's original opening sequence starts on an anti-piracy message before going into the Konami logo and then a "From Yu-Gi-Oh!..." screen before the opening animation for each series logo--the original team decided to use the first image to vent their frustration at Konami for not localizing this game, and while that's valid (to some extent), we thought we'd use the opportunity to dedicate this project to Kazuki Takahashi for inspiring our love for YGO and the place it's had in our hearts for all these years.

We'll be updating the names of cards that had TCG releases after the original patch was worked on/updated by FLSG to those corresponding names.

Xan has been working on many UI fixes for us to apply with this, among them 3-line dialogue box text as is used in the ENG TF1-5 games--once implemented for TFSP, I'll be going over everything to make full use of that extra space where needed, so things might not look as they do in the video by then.

Character bios will be worked on after I've done the story stuff, though I've taken initial cracks at it for Yuma and Yuya's bios for the video, along with translating the location/affiliation names ("Domino High School," "Satellite," etc).

Currently no release date is planned, as I'm working on this between my GX-finalizing work and actual IRL work, though we'll see how later this year looks as more work gets done--but as noted in the video, all things being equal, it will be released when everything is ready. I'll try to post regular updates or rambles now that this announcement's been made, lol, but do try not to constantly check in on a release date. 🙏🏽

All that said, I think that covers just about everything I wanted to put out there with this, lol. It's been fun to work on this so far and getting to see what I've re-translated in-game is definitely neat; looking forward to us being able to release everything when ready.

So, I was surprised to find out there aren’t exactly many translated scenes from YGO: TFSP going around; especially considering that it’s not only relatively recent, but also a play on being a Yu-Gi-Oh dating sim LOL so I decided that, until I get the rom to the game, that ill translate some interactions from the “dating” routes that i find on youtube/niconico/etc.

the search has been full of perils, but here’s a scene i managed to get my hands on from your second date with mai. Please note that it’s not the best translation and i did adjust some of it to fit an english flow of conversation; but otherwise it’s as close as i’ll get!

some footnotes:

this is the second of what i assume to be three dates of mai’s route.

it’s implied that the whole gang was together, but then ryou had an errand to run, and otogi decided to tag along with him.

and then they (ryou) got lost.

its implied that by ‘waiting for something’ and ‘joining in on something’ they’re referring to joey just showing up i guess.

for some reason they all think ryou’s idea to stand around and wait for something to happen like idiots is a good idea. they genuinely just stand there staring at each other in complete silence before ryou gets frustrated at his own idea

i’m not sure what duke was trying to express or why he said it when he brought up seeing his muscles (lit. his arms)

mai says something similar to ryou that she does to yami bakura in duel links; that when ryou is dueling, he completely changes. however, it’s canon to TFSP that yami bakura has nothing to do with this particular duel, and that ryou genuinely just gets like that sometimes.

although i didnt include it, she also may note that she gets that way in a duel sometimes as well.

i've finally finished reading the crossover monkees RPF fanfiction (aka Time Prison Fic) that i liked that davy design from and um

how can a fanfiction be so unapologetically LGBT-friendly and anti-TERF and also hate women and sapphics so much?

it's also painfully obvious how much of a self-insert the fic's version of mike is (and tbh it also stinks of naruto harem fic except it's mike nesmith from the monkees instead of naruto and he's transmasc and there's more then women in the harem)

the earlier parts before mike came in were more tolerable (elaine kido is both a girlboss AND a girlfail. what a queen. i love her) but wow the monkees popping up and taking over the story ruined it.

mike literally has none of the babygirl and pathetic meow meow qualities he actually had (according to the monkees fandom on here) and is literally every poorly written alpha male OP self-insert harem smut fic lead on ffnet except he's trans, and surprise! he doesn't just like women! (props to that bit! but it's just an excuse for male and nb characters that half of the writing duo has the hots for to also get into mike's pants and be his cheerleader and do nothing otherwise like the women also do in this fic and almost any other harem fanfiction from ffnet)

there's also other Questionable Things, socks and his flanderization from genuinely good and interesting lead to 'heehoo funny meme guy', for one (i could write an entire dissertion on what the story lovingly calls the 'TFSP' oh man)

and whatever tf they did with micky dolenz (once she comes out as a woman in the fic she just becomes another cheerleader and porking object for mike and they disregard previous characterization for that. did i mention how much that half of the writing duo hates women and sapphics? because wow he sure does)

and tbh this fic also does davy dirty (he's just there for fetishization of fat people because the half of the duo who writes him has a weight gain and feederism kink and it's painfully obvious but he doesn't want to push it on mike because he doesn't want him being 'weak and helpless' or something)

peter is also done pretty dirty too tbh (literally he's just boiled down to 'hippie pacifist plantboy who puts up protective barriers and heals people', which is not a bad concept in itself, but it's executed so SO badly. like you gotta make socialist and bisexual autistic icon and avid woman respecter peter tork into a soft 'don't hurt me or i'll cry' boy to further elevate mike?)

and when a new character appears or an old character from earlier in the fic, 9/10 they're just there to be mike's cheerleader/pork mike/for mike to beat up

there's some genuinely good humor in this fic (the puns and wordplay are top notch in this fic, and they know the right time and place to slip in a meme or reference)

but wow. WOW. does the male half of the writer duo ever hate women and sapphics.

i'm currently reading the reboot of the story and tbh it also stinks of some of the same problems (mike somehow has the ability to turn straight men gay for him, which is funny, but also the ability also makes sapphics fall in love with him, a man, who isn't even close to being butch, fall in love with him too, which is kinda gross lol)

the only fun parts of the reboot of the story so far is the reimagining of the seiya and ikki rivalry as more of a bugs bunny and daffy duck situation (a very galaxy-brained but clearly not canon-compliant take on their rivalry. doesn't stop from making me love it though), women having more agency (when mike's not around lol), and the use of pizza tower as a new addition because peppino's pretty bang on characterization-wise so far and he's been frequently enjoyable as a character for the Most Part, as there's the One Misstep for the Crossover Mother of his OC Child because the whole 'don't age up children and ship them' discourse which taints the fic's version of peppino Slightly.

it's obvious the writers care a lot about representation but hm. there's a lot of woman and sapphic hate permanating this fic saga and its reboot (the reboot significantly less so but it still Stinks of it Slightly) and i think that's what ruins it.

Per the Department of Education (DepEd) Order #21, Series of 2023; 'Brigada Eskwela' is a nationwide school maintenance program activity that encourages education stakeholders to ensure that schools including T.H.E.S. are all set in time for the opening of classes the said scheduled date until graduation in mid-2024 onwards. The theme for this year in the aforesaid programme with a slogan called "Bayanihan para sa Matatag na Paaralan" (Community of Unity for a Strong School).

“As classes resume, we ramp up efforts to ensure our children and teachers (in Quezon City) are safe from toxic exposure and schools aggressively promote safe and environment-friendly alternatives, and sound chemicals & waste management”, said Thony Dizon, whose a Toxics Campaigner of BAN Toxics.

Quezon City officials, students, teachers, parents and community partners have all participated in the event. Toxics Campaigner of BAN Toxics (Thony Dizon) and Executive Director (Reynaldo San Juan Jr.) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between T.H.E.S. and a toxic watchdog group emphasizing the commitment to the Toxics-Free Schools Program (TFSP).

The TFSP is a campaign of the aforesaid toxic watchdog group started in 2014 to encourage educational institutions to adopt sound chemicals and waste management in their operations and develop school-based awareness to protect the students and faculty members from the harmful effects of toxic chemicals & hazardous wastes. Some of the toxic chemicals that may be scientifically present in schools include lead, mercury, phthalates, cadmium and arsenic. Exposure to these chemicals pose serious health risks to children & school personnel. The program also promotes proper waste management both in school and at home in Quezon City alone. This includes proper waste segregation, implementing the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle); urban gardening and composting, and minimization of single-use plastics usage.

"We thus enjoin schools and academic institutions to incorporate TFSP and similar initiatives into their curriculum and practice to protect them against the negative effects of chemicals and wastes that could be found in schools, aside from communities and homes", as Dizon added.

“Brigada Eskwela should not be a one-time event, ensuring that the schools are safe and environment-friendly should be prioritized. We call the attention of the Department of Education to adopt a system approach to be able to protect the students, teachers, and school personnel from everyday exposure to toxic and waste”, the toxic watchdog group said in a Media Conference to OneNETnews.

Aside from kicking off the 'Brigada Eskwela' event, solicitations and contributions will be strictly forbidden during and after its maintenance activity, per the radio interview of DWPM-AM's Radyo 630: Manila. A school-wide clean-up drive was organized to promote cleanliness and sustainability, beginning August 14th, 2023 and ends on Saturday afternoon (Manila local time).

DING, finished re-translating Aki's TFSP story events! Worked on it over a couple evenings and this weekend, and it does feel like a hint of the Arcadia Movement arc we should've gotten in-show that gives that part of her some more closure; finding out that the Arcadia Movement is still around and using kids in distress (from the old Satellite, as revealed later) as their pawns, Aki sets out to put an end to them once and for all, only to come up against Divine being the one trying to get her to rejoin.

Also thought this was a good exchange as Yusei jumps in and acknowledges how much she's grown (I can hear "Hopeless Battle" faintly in the background):

(It is wild how often I bump up against the original story "translation" maybe trying in a few places but then completely missing the mark on things most everywhere else and making things up [and needlessly worse in spots] to get the card game side of things out there--but then again, maybe Aki saying "I'm going to fucking destroy you" to Divine instead of "I'm here to put an end to the Arcadia Movement" is a good thing)

Now, to give her in-duel lines (which I roughly worked on to include some in the announcement video I did) another look-through, and then she should be good to go; once I do that, I'll likely start more work on my finalized GX 111-112 subs, so stay tuned!

Joey: (blush sprite) It’s huge… I wonder if looking at it for long enough will fill my heart with passion!

Mako: Oh! Do you like the sea too?!

Mako: (blushing sprite) Let’s get along! I also love the sea!

Mako: Wait, you’re—

Joey: You’re—

Mako: Oh! Wheeler!

Joey: It’s been a long time, Tsunami!

Mako: Yeah! It’s been since Duelist Kingdom!

Mako: So, you’re also participating in Battle City?

Joey: That’s right!

Mako: Thing is, I feel like I’ve been in the sea for the first time in a long time. It made me feel better.

Mako: I will say, first, though… There don’t seem to be a lot of prey in this sea.

Joey: Were you diving to catch fish!?

Mako: Well, if you think about it, isn’t the ocean like a city’s crest? It can change!

Joey: Er… You’re the one who’s changing things…

Mako: Wow… Even though you can’t see the fish, you still come to the sea… Joey Wheeler, you must love the ocean!

Joey: That’s not the reason I came to see the sea! We’re here looking for a duelist!

Mako: Then… Have I motivated you?

Joey: Yeah! I challenge you to a duel!

Mako: Gahahaha!

Mako: You can’t beat my sea deck!

Joey: What is this, a damn seafood stand?!

Mako: Ha! Besides, I met a partner who I hit it off quite well with!

Tejima: Yeah! I’ll crush you with my deck!

Joey: With both me and PLAYER, I’ll defeat you!

joey’s route takes place during his arc in battle city.

what joey says about the sea filling his heart with passion is just the gist of he was expressing. it likely translates a bit differently, but i decided that that was the closest i personally was gonna get lol

when mako is referring to the sea as a city’s crest or emblem, he actually calls it a city’s mon.

tejima is not a real yugioh character. this game just kind of makes people as it goes
