What happened to Aoi in the wrathful route is both the coolest and most heartbreaking thing I've seen in a while. I still had this image in my head long after I finished the game so I had to draw it.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Miu as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later.

Age: 26 Profession: mangaka, professional cosplayer

-Before making it big in the manga industry, Miu made ends meet during art school by working part-time at a local bookstore. She started out at the cash register, but in no time ended up being a storyteller in the children’s section. She knows many stories from Japanese folklore by heart, reciting them from memory dating back to her childhood. Her dramatic, often comedic enactments made her very popular with kids. Even after she became a mangaka and stopped working at the bookstore, she enjoys telling scary stories by the fire to her friends.

-Junji Ito and Kentaro Miura are her favorite mangakas and sources of inspiration for her own work. Her favorite Western authors are Edgar Allan Poe and Peter Straub.

-As a professional cosplayer, Miu is talented at making her own wigs in every conceivable color, shape, and form, though she keeps her own hair naturally dark and pixie-cut short.

-She gives significant discounts to her friends who request handmade Halloween costumes. One of her greatest achievements, in her opinion, is the scarily accurate Tusken Raider costume she made for Ryo.

-Due to their shared interest in comic book culture and frequent attendance at conventions, Miu sees Minoru the most. She regards him like a second older brother and they always have fun geeking out at cons together.

-Never forgetting the stalker that has haunted her memories since childhood, Miu took it upon herself to learn self-defense from Aoi.

-Above average height runs in the Shinonome family. After hitting her late-teen growth spurt, Miu is now the tallest girl in the group. As she had when she was eleven, she likes to wear comfortable, oversized clothing that hides her lanky build.

-Miu is a leftie and is very loud and proud about it. She has bought practically every product from the local store for lefties.

-When Miu racked up enough savings from her success as a mangaka, she went backpacking around the world to investigate spooky, interesting sites on her bucket list. If she had to pick just one favorite destination, it would be the Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic: a church made of human bones. She steered clear, however, of the Aztec pyramids where human sacrifices were conducted. Hits too close to home, in her opinion.

-She wears gauze around her fingers from constantly pricking them by accident when she’s sewing her own costumes.

-Miu coming out as aro ace seized the attention of Japanese social media, and to the disappointment of some of her fans. Her friends were the first to know, of course, and had long known before the public announcement.

-She owns more books in the house than anyone in the Survive gang, even more than Shuuji with all his history tomes. She collects manga volumes and horror novels from her favorite authors, as well as an impressive stash of fashion and hair salon magazines she uses for reference and inspiration.

-During her free time, Miu likes to take Syakomon with her to the aquarium. On warmer days, they’d hit the beach. Chilling out in tide pools is Syakomon’s favorite pastime. Ironically enough, Miu often finds ideas for the darkest stories in clear, sunny skies while she lounges on the beach.

-Since meeting Syakomon, Miu has sworn off seafood and can’t bear the thought of eating clams or oysters. Just looking at them spread out on a plate makes her nauseated.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Ryo as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later

Age: 30 Profession: sign language interpreter, disability advocate

-If any reunion involves a big lunch or dinner party, Ryo’s house is the go-to place for it. He grumbles about having to buy and cook a crap ton of food for everyone, but everyone knows how much he actually enjoys doing it and having people over. When Aoi visits from overseas, she would help him out in the kitchen to cook a big feast for everyone.

-Ryo likes to collect colorful patterned kitchen gloves, quilted potholders, and aprons. He changes them out every month and for special days like Halloween and Christmas.

-Already fluent in Japanese sign language, Ryo likes to study other sign languages in his free time. He’s very interested in learning about the similarities and differences of sign languages around the world. His latest endeavor is picking up American sign language.

-Ryo's favorite movie is Pixar's Inside Out. For a guy who struggled with expressing his feelings when he was younger, and still sometimes does, a movie about feelings with feelings and a girl struggling to adapt and open up resonates deeply with him. He cries over it every time.

-Ever since Minoru made him watch Star Wars, and how it introduced the idea of Tusken Raiders using sign language, Ryo has been obsessed with the Tuskens. He has figurines on his shelf and would dress up like one for Halloween.

-His usual greeting to Shuuji is a feint to the face, a valuable reminder of the time Shuuji needed a wake-up call and turned his life around for the better thanks to Ryo's intervention.

-Working out at the gym or running laps around the neighborhood is a good excuse for Ryo to wear headbands like he did as a teen.

-He occasionally volunteers at nursing homes, keeping the lonely elderly residents company or helping out short-staffed nurses with small housekeeping tasks here and there. Minoru would joke that Ryo’s right at home there because he’s like a grumbling old man.

-Ryo has been a connoisseur and aficionado in non-Japanese cuisine since he'd been cooking for his mother. Too sick to eat out often, let alone travel overseas, she would be treated to Ryo's homemade dishes--his way of helping her live life to the fullest. Nowadays he cooks for Kunemon and his friends. He's particularly fond of spicy dishes, so Thai, Indian, and Mexican food are among his favorites.

-Ryo likes to visit the local butterfly garden and bring Kunemon with him. He could easily spend hours in there, wandering around looking for caterpillars and cocoons lurking beyond obvious sight.

-Kunemon has developed an addiction to beans since first trying them in the Kemonogami world. Ryo’s pantry is always well stocked with canned fava and pinto beans.

-Ryo’s contentedly single and not eager to look around, but he’s open to the possibility of settling down with someone if it ever comes around naturally. His hard and fast criteria: he and Kunemon are a package deal, no exceptions.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Kaito as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later

Age: 29 Profession: rock star

-For as long as he can remember, Kaito always had a hard time making friends. And for him, making six close human ones and a close Kemonogami one along the way is enough friends for a lifetime. Especially since he became famous, Kaito is very good at sniffing out bullshit from people who want to get chummy with him just because of his fame. He’s all about keeping it real and values his friends who’ve stuck with him through thick and thin, despite his flaws and difficult attitude.

-In the early years as Kaito’s music career picked up momentum, a few guys tried to form a band with him. Those attempts quickly fell apart due to many disagreements, disputes, and Kaito's short fuse. No one but Dracmon is truly in sync with him, and since that realization Kaito is adamant about not performing with anyone else.

-In his early twenties, Kaito struggled under the stress and pressure of international fame, and fell into smoking cigarettes and drinking excessively. He’d gotten into trouble once for driving while intoxicated, and twice when he got into a fistfight at a club. Trying to get his shit together, he checked himself into rehab. He’s been sober since and now swears off drinking. He’s still trying to quit smoking.

-Since journeying through the Kemonogami world, Kaito has been better about giving Miu the space she needs and tries hard not to coddle her. He’s still a worrywart when she makes public appearances at conventions. Since Minoru also likes to show up at those conventions, Kaito would discreetly tell him to keep an eye on Miu.

-Kaito frequents the local Buddhist temple, where he can meditate and clear his head to try getting his anger management and anxieties under control.

-Kaito keeps to himself and is notoriously private about his personal life. The only people who can really keep tabs on him is the Survive gang, and only because he lets them. Unlike his sister, he does not have any social media and refuses to partake in it. While he 100% supports Miu's career and influence on social media, he thinks it'd do him more harm than good to be on it himself. Kaito knows he's difficult to deal with, and being on social media would just be fuel to the fire. 

-Kaito enjoys performing in front of faceless crowds, but he doesn't do well with fans one on one. His social battery doesn't run long at all; meet and greets for photos and autographs are the bane of his existence. Ironically enough, his aloof, gruff manner makes him very popular with the girls.

-His first tattoo is Dracmon (to the surprise of absolutely no one). Dracmon likes to say how flattered he is to have his handsome face inked into Kaito’s skin forever.

-Kaito finds unlikely common ground with Aoi when he learned that she enjoys classic rock. His idea of fun during a reunion with his friends is to hit up a karaoke bar, and Aoi is his favorite singing partner as they jam to classic rock together. Before she left to study and live in the UK, her trips to karaoke with Kaito attracted great interest from the paparazzi. Tabloids spread rumors that they were dating, when they’re in fact just good friends hanging out to decompress and have fun.

-Out of everyone in the group, Takuma is the one Kaito feels the most comfortable around. Most of the time Kaito just wants someone who can lend an ear to his worries, anxieties, and frustrations, and Takuma is the right person for the job. He highly respects and greatly trusts Takuma. Since breaking his knee from the Kemonogami protest, Takuma was granted the same level of protectiveness as Miu, and since then Kaito makes sure to accompany him anywhere there could be trouble or danger.

-Dracmon became interested in drums since attending some live concerts of Kaito's favorite bands. Kaito enrolled Dracmon in drumming lessons and he picked it up with alarming speed. Soon Dracmon became the drummer who always performs alongside Kaito.

-Kaito owns a motorcycle that he and Dracmon share. The first Kemonogami to get a driver's license, Dracmon occasionally takes the motorcycle for a spin as Beelzemon.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Aoi as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later. (Headcanons referencing truthful route spoilers under the cut!)

Age: 30 Profession: MI5/Security Service agent

-Due to years of residence and schooling in England, Aoi becomes fluent in English and speaks with a southeast London accent. Her first exposure to English, however, dates back to a time before she ever set foot in the UK. Her father is a big fan of classic American and English rock, and would share his CDs with her so that she grew up a fan herself of bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Queen. Her peers were taken aback when they learned that the quiet, polite honor student liked foreign rock for study music. Even with a more formal education later on, Aoi attributes her fluency in English to her father's CDs that she listens to so often.

-The first time Aoi used a gun to take down a criminal, she was on the verge of something between fainting and a panic attack. Her hands couldn't stop shaking. For days, she had nightmares of the criminal coming back for her, his eye blown out from her shot. She almost quit her job. Remembering Labramon's evolution to Cerberumon, that great power can be wielded responsibly and for good, gave her the reassurance and comfort she needed to keep her head in the game.

-To the surprise of absolutely no one, Aoi is an excellent mother to her kids: kind, loving, and attentive yet firm when she had to be. During her middle and high school years she used to be a babysitter, where she learned how to take care of kids. Since then, she wanted to have her own.

-On video chats with the Survive gang, Aoi is often seen corralling her herd of hyperactive kids, dividing her time between catching up with her friends and distracting the little ones with toys and bouncing them on her lap. Aoi constantly apologizes about the kids, but her friends don’t mind the videobombs at all and find the kids incorrigibly cute.

-Due to her dangerous line of work in law enforcement and taking down criminals, Aoi ends up being the most athletic and physically fit among the group. She doesn't like to flaunt her strength, but one time the gang pressured her into having an arm-wrestling match with Kaito (which she won).

-Also because of her role in law enforcement, Aoi is the only one among her friends who knows how to fight with knives and guns. Of course she considers force and violence as a very last resort, but when push comes to shove she has nerves of steel. She's skilled enough with close quarter combat to fend off a Sealsdramon on her own.

-Even as an adult, she continues to wear the ring her father had given her when she was a kid. She wears it on her pointer finger along with the wedding ring on her fourth.

-Living in England had made Aoi develop a fondness for pubs and Irish beer. During her time as a single college student, she enjoyed nothing more than a table to herself with a mug of beer in one hand and a good book in the other. When she gets together with her friends at a bar in Japan, she can drink everyone under the table.

-The Chronicles of Narnia are some of Aoi's favorite books. The story about kids wandering into another world full of magic and talking animals reminded her very much of her own adventure through the Kemonogami world. Besides loving the story for its nostalgic value, the language is simple enough for her to understand and enjoy when she had started out learning English. When she became a mother, she would read Narnia books to her kids.

-Aoi has mostly done away with the unconscious habit of holding her own hand in front of herself, though it resurfaces when she becomes particularly stressed or anxious.

-Aoi’s MI5 colleagues admire her calm, collected authority and confidence, and how she can keep it together in the most charged, intense situations. Only her friends truly know what she went through and how hard she had worked to achieve that level of confidence.

-Labramon absolutely adores Aoi’s kids and is fiercely protective of them. When the family goes on walks to the park and the playground, Labramon likes to take on her Dobermon form to guard the kids from potential bullies and kidnappers.

-As smart as she is loyal, Labramon learned to understand and speak English along with Aoi. She would be Aoi’s study buddy even though she couldn’t enroll in school. They used to spend many late nights practicing grammar and vocabulary with each other.

-When Aoi started dating the man who would be her future husband, Labramon didn’t start off on the best terms with him. She was suspicious of him at first, going into full-fledged guard dog mode, and didn’t make it subtle at all what she’d do to him if he dare hurt her partner. She briefly worried that she’d have to compete with him for Aoi’s attention and affection. Eventually she was won over by how much he made Aoi happy, which was the most important thing to Labramon.

-Not only does Labramon learn what a police dog is, she becomes one. Her keen sense of smell can effortlessly sniff out clues and whereabouts of suspects. If a situation escalates, she can evolve into stronger forms to provide more firepower.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Minoru as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later. (Headcanons referencing truthful route spoilers under the cut!)

Age: 29 Profession: disaster relief worker, occasional stand-up comedian

-Minoru built his brand of stand-up comedy from becoming known as the "Japanese Russell Peters." Many of his acts involve doing uncanny impressions of accents and poking fun at Japan. When his acts gained international fame, he expanded his targets to other Asian countries. (Go watch Russell Peters on Youtube if you haven't heard of him, he knows how to roast every ethnic group in the audience and get a standing ovation for it.)

-He gives his friends big discounts to his stand-up acts, and whenever they could show up, he never hesitates to put them on the spot and roast them in front of his audience.

-His idea of having fun with his friends during reunions is to rent out an amusement park. He's the biggest adrenaline junkie in the group and gets a kick out of plunging hundreds of feet from the tallest roller coasters.

-Behind his carefree manner and easy smile is a man sometimes haunted by the times he couldn't save people. His involvement in disaster relief aid can be emotionally taxing, especially when the casualties are high. He has seen people crushed beyond recognition under rubble and found rotting bodies floating in flooded streets. He has been a bearer of bad news to hopeful family members, and to see their hope shattered into grief sometimes almost breaks him. Still he finds the strength and courage to keep doing his job, and his friends admire him all the more for it.

-Though nowhere near Saki’s level of medical expertise, Minoru has had enough basic medical training to treat people in emergencies where a hospital and proper staff aren’t nearby. There have been plenty of times when he had to resuscitate people who’ve almost drowned.

-Minoru sports a long scar down the upper half of his right arm. He got it while he led a search and rescue during an earthquake, and as he plodded through a collapsed building, a bunch of shrapnel suddenly came loose from above. Minoru dodged it just in time for a sharp edge to only cut his arm instead of impale his head. It was deep enough for him to need stitches. Whenever he can, he wears tanktops to show off his “badge of honor.”

-Minoru harbors a love for superhero comics through adulthood, shamelessly embracing the fact he'll never outgrow them. He's an avid con-goer and would chase down seiyuus and mangakas for autographs.

-Minoru doesn’t understand all the fuss and debate over the whole Western versus Japanese comics thing. He loves them both, simple as that.

-Out of the group, Minoru claims the dubious honor of going through the most failed relationships and dead-end dates. Either he would get bored or shy away from serious commitment. He goes through the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) before settling on the fact that he’s happy enough with his job and being with Falcomon.

-Falcomon continues to be Minoru’s trusted partner as he too gets involved with disaster relief. As Crowmon he puts his flight capability to good use by tracking down victims from above and transporting them to shelters and hospitals.

-Very curious about the tools and technology of the human world, Falcomon enjoys visiting museums and tech stores to see how everything works. If there’s an area undergoing construction, he can’t help but hang around and watch the workers.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Takuma as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later. (Headcanons referencing truthful route spoilers under the cut!)

Age: 29 Profession: counselor

-When Takuma first opened up his counseling services, he was hit with wave after wave of people struggling to figure out their new Kemonogami partners. More than happy to help but new to the job, he quickly ran into burnout. His friends had to remind him to take some time off to rest and modify his schedule so it can be more manageable.

-Takuma doesn’t wear his goggles anymore, but keeps it in his office as a valuable memento of his youth.

-His success rate as a human-Kemonogami counselor is quite high, though there have been a few clients who’ve ultimately been lost causes. The case that haunts him the most is the twelve year-old boy with a Commandramon, who was a victim of relentless bullying at school. He’s had a few appointments with Takuma, and he seemed to make progress. But later, in retaliation, the boy ordered his Commandramon to go on a school shooting spree before killing himself. Takuma is wracked with tremendous guilt every time he thinks of this boy, wondering what he could have done to turn his life around.

-The prejudice, slander, and violence that Kemonogami face in the human world compelled Takuma to be politically active. He’s a vocal advocate of initiating laws and rights for Kemonogami. Thanks to his efforts, harassing or harming law-abiding Kemonogami on sole basis of their appearance is considered a hate crime.

-Takuma walks with a permanent slight limp since the time a police officer smashed his right kneecap at a pro-Kemonogami protest. Agumon almost set the officer on fire in retaliation, but fortunately gathered enough sense to rush Takuma to the hospital. Takuma doesn’t regret attending the protest, and plans to organize many more, even if that might mean getting the other kneecap broken.

-His bromance with Minoru is still going strong. They chat on the phone almost every day. Every time Takuma hears news of the latest tsunami or earthquake, the first thing he does is check on Minoru to see if he’s okay.

-Once he entered high school, he got over his one-sided crush on Aoi. Nowadays he sees her only as a good friend, though the gang still joke that he’s the dad as much as she’s the mom of the group.

-Aoi and Ryo may be the resident chefs, but Takuma’s curry is considered a knockout hit. He inherited the recipe from his mother, and never fails to include it in every lunch or dinner party with his friends.

-During their free time, Takuma and Agumon like to relax at the local public bathhouse. They also go on trips to the zoo so Agumon can gawk and gush over the animals.

-Sometimes Takuma gets nightmares of what would have happened if he chose not to return to the Kemonogami world with Miyuki and Agumon. Whenever he gets those kinds of nights, the first thing he’d do when he wakes up is scroll through the photo album on his phone: proof that he really did make it out with everyone alive.

-As promised, Takuma showed Agumon how to ride a bike when they got back to the human world. Agumon now has his own tricycle and it’s his most prized possession.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Shuuji as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later

Age: 31 Profession: university professor

-Though he doesn't regret the career choice he made, Shuuji has been on antidepressants since his family disowned him for not becoming a physician. His greatest source of comfort, however, is Lopmon’s unfailing support and faith in him.

-For his doctorate thesis, Shuuji chose to present his research on history of the Kemonogami world during the feudal era. The Professor and his friends had front-row seats to his dissertation defense.

-Takuma and Aoi remain close to their mother and father, respectively, and this makes Shuuji slightly jealous of them. He tries not to let his envy get in the way of his friendships with them, though many times he wished he and his father could have been on good terms.

-He grew out a trimmed beard so that he resembles the Professor in his younger years. His friends suspect (correctly) that he grew a beard so it's easier for him to be taken seriously by looking older.

-He picked up the Professor's habit of resting fingers on his chin when he's lost in thought, especially since he grew facial hair.

-Shuuji enjoys investigating historical sites for any traces of contact with the Kemonogami world. Even if there isn’t, he could easily spend hours appreciating the enduring signs of centuries past.

-He proudly keeps an extensive collection of books on myth and folklore from around the world. He couldn’t care less about organizing clothes in his closet, but he loves organizing his books.

-He selects his teacher assistants carefully, the primary criteria being the ability to not be completely, hopelessly distracted by Lopmon's cuteness.

-On nights when Shuuji is up late to grade student essays, Lopmon would go back and forth from the kitchen and study room to bring him snacks and coffee.

-There was a time when Shuuji suffered from a bout of gnarly sciatica, and Lopmon as Antylamon would carry heavy books for him.

-On Shuuji’s 20th birthday, shortly after he decided to get a degree in history and his family disowned him, Lopmon surprises him with a wallet as a gift. It’s far cheaper than the one his father had given him, but Shuuji is more than happy to replace his old wallet.

-Shuuji has been going steady with his girlfriend for a few years, though recently they come to a disagreement about having kids. She wants a family while he’s against it, mostly because he’s scared of the thought of ending up like his father. He has spent much of his life not knowing what it’s like to grow up in a stable household, leading him to believe that he wouldn’t make a good parent.

-Lopmon developed a fondness and passion for acrobatics. Shuuji enrolled him in gymnastics and would take him to see the traveling circus whenever they’re in town. The Olympics were always an exciting time; Lopmon would be glued to the TV during the gymnastics portion, cheering on all the athletes.

Digimon Survive headcanons - Saki as an adult

An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later

Age: 27 Profession: pediatric anesthesiologist

(I have training and experience in pediatric anesthesia myself, so these headcanons were particularly fun to work on)

-In medical school, Saki got a leg up from her peers from going to the hospital so much as a patient. She always gets high marks for standardized patient interactions. She knows firsthand how to talk to someone who's scared, confused, and in pain.

-Saki had to start out anesthesia residency with adults and absolutely hated it. Carrying cute little babies into the OR is way more fun, in her opinion, and she sure as hell can't do that with adults.

-All the surgeons, even the ones older by a few decades and those taller by a head or two, know not to mess with Saki. The biggest mistake a new unacquainted surgeon could make is think that he or she can bully Saki in the OR. She's not afraid to put her foot down and put patient safety first before whatever the surgeon's doing.

-On one trip when Aoi brought her family from England to visit her parents in Japan, her youngest child broke his arm badly from a fall and needed surgery. Aoi requested Saki to be the one putting him to sleep. Saki felt very honored and a bit flattered to be entrusted with his care, while Aoi would trust no one more than a close friend to do the job well.

-She has a soft spot for all kids, but an even softer spot for chronically ill kids who need frequent surgery. She would try to comfort them by sharing her own story of being sick as a kid.

-She doesn't have kids herself, but knows all the popular children's songs by heart because she has to hear them so damn much from TVs playing in the pre-op area.

-As a clinical instructor, Saki is known among medical students to be blunt, straightforward, and a bit scary. To students she warms up to, she uses more friendly sarcasm. She loves messing with the students and pushing them out of their comfort zone, testing to see how they perform under stress.

-With Minoru and Aoi, Saki forms a support group so they can share the struggles they face with jobs involving lives at stake, and help each other through those struggles. The three of them know what it's like to face a reality where everyone can't always be saved. Their little support group is a way of coping with that reality.

-In her spare time, Saki makes fabric designs and turns them into scrub caps, which sell like hotcakes.

-Glued to her phone as much as when she was a teen, Saki would be on it during lulls in surgery, checking to see what her friends have been up to.

-Her guilty pleasure is being always informed of the latest hospital gossip and having chances to spill the tea.

-Out of the Survive gang, she sees Ryo the most often. He works at her hospital as an on-site sign language interpreter, and would help Saki interact with deaf patients. Their level of familiarity and bantering leads some of the staff to assume (wrongly) that the two are flirting and dating.

-Floramon is quite proud to be the first Kemonogami employed at a hospital. Though she can't accompany Saki in the OR, her job is to entertain and comfort pediatric patients before surgery. In the pre-op area together, they make a good team as Floramon distracts the kid while Saki asks for medical history from the guardian.

-Saki likes to flavor the mask with Floramon's scent. She had discovered that patients are soothed by the nice smell and fall asleep the quickest from its sedative properties. She got the "Floramon flavor" patented, and soon even ORs outside Japan were using it.

-When they're not working, Saki and Floramon enjoy taking scenic strolls through public gardens, hanging out at coffee shops, or binging K-dramas at home.
