I was NOT prepared for the sounds Quark made when he got injured. I was watching Invasive Procedures on the family TV and I had to turn the volume down to preserve what little dignity I had left. Thanks Quark for being a little FREAK

Some highlights from my week at STLV
- Meeting Garrett Wang first, giving him a special Voyager limerick I wrote for him, and him loving it
- Getting my picture with John Billingsley and his wife Bonnie and getting some great advice about starting out in the acting industry from them
- Telling Tawny Newsome she looked beautiful and her complimenting my TOS inspired blue eyeshadow (and then her recognizing me the day after when I got her autograph)
- Jess Bush also complimenting me on my eyeshadow
- Walking past Anthony Montgomery and telling him “Hi! I think you’re really cool!” and him replying “Thank you, I appreciate that! I think you’re cool too!”
- Getting a duo picture with Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner, and Frakes telling me that I looked pretty
- Talking to Marina Sirtis, telling her I was there for my birthday, and her wishing me happy birthday and gifting me a free signed photo of Deanna
- Talking about Out to Sea with Brent and listening to him regale the fun he had making that movie
- Talking with Cirroc Lofton about his experience working with Avery Brooks and mutually agreeing that Star Trek needs more wholesome parent/child relationships
- Listening to John de Lancie talk about his experience sailing from California to French Polynesia (I could listen to him talk for hours, his voice is so soothing)
- Going to a memorial panel for Nichelle Nichols that featured her sister as a surprise guest (holy moly, she looked and sounded exactly like Nichelle 🥹)
- Going to another memorial for Aron Eisenberg and getting to make a toast to him with Cirroc and other fans (they used root beer for the drinks and had gummy worms “tube grubs” as table snacks)
- The moderator for the TNG panel not showing up, allowing Frakes to take over and him, Brent and Gates going absolutely batshit feral on stage
- Walter Koenig speaking out against the genocide in Palestine (and just getting to hear him talk in general)
- Seeing Armin Shimerman again and getting to tell him how much I enjoyed Betrayal of Angels (and his face lighting up when I told him how great an author he is)
- Sara Mitich and Ronnie Rowe both wishing me happy birthday and just being all around so kind and patient
- Telling Nana Visitor that she had the voice of an angel when she sings, and seeing how big and beautiful a smile she got
- Telling Kate Mulgrew she looked beautiful and her replying “Thank you! So do you.”
- JG Hertzler telling an absolutely hilarious story about how Avery Brooks and Rene Auberjonois got into a fight about one of Rene’s line deliveries while filming Far Beyond the Stars
- Richard McGee, Jay Chattaway and Jeff Russo conducting an absolutely phenomenal orchestral concert of Trek songs
- Seeing a really fun dinner show with some of the actors singing Broadway songs (my personal favorites being Nana, Robert Picardo, Bonnie Gordon, Jon Jon Briones and Celia Rose Gooding)
- Seeing Jeffrey Combs again and getting to ask him during his panel what would happen if all of his Trek characters were in the same room together (his answer: they would probably start either a baseball team or a rock band)
- Getting a picture taken with myself and both Carol Kane and Christopher Lloyd together
- Getting Mary Chieffo’s autograph and her writing happy birthday in Klingonese on it
- The entirety of the Rat Pack performance
- Getting to meet and interact with Trekkies of different ages, race, gender and sexuality and all of them incredibly nice

I just got into Deep Space 9 and did some googling. How delightful was it to have Armin Shimerman Ferengi screeching in the booth? I love all the references in your work god bless 🙏 hail Satan 🙏
Thanks! My partner and I just started watching DS9. It's her first time, so I'm excited to share it with her. It's also reminding me just how much fun to was to work with Armin.
He was always so excited to be in the booth during the ensemble records, and would joke that since he was trained theatrically he was always overlapping everyone else's lines to the point where he was "overlapping himself".
He brought loads of personality to Skarr, and I got very lucky that my casting director Kris Zimmerman-Salter had so many good "ins" with the Star Trek gang thanks to Michael Dorn and "I.M. Weasel".

School Hard is, in retrospect, one of the pivotal episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
In this episode, Buffy is trapped in Sunnydale High School, forced to confront one of the most significant villains the show has yet introduced; one of the most iconic and memorable of the show’s seven seasons.  Somebody who, the first time he speaks to Buffy this episode, casually threatens to kill her and walks away without so much as a scratch.  Somebody who we’re meant to see as an altogether different proposition than his Season 1 predecessors.  Somebody whose attempts to destroy Buffy this time around are only foiled thanks to unexpected support from her mother, leaving him free to try again and again for the rest of the season.
A villain who, unlike Luke and the Annointed One and all the other Season 1 monsters of the week, actually seems to be having fun while he does his best to ruin Buffy’s life and inflict misery and torture on the population of Sunnydale. Somebody who relishes in inflicting pretty cruelty.  Somebody who was originally intended to be killed off after only a few appearances, but who – thanks in no small part to his performance in episodes like this one – will instead continue to appear on the show for years to come.  A character it is impossible to imagine Buffy the Vampire Slayer without.
I am, of course, talking about Principal Snyder.
Tumblr media
(Also there are some new vampires in town this episode I guess but whatever.  This post isn’t about them.)
I didn’t talk about him much during my Season 1 rewatch, but I really enjoy Principal Snyder as an antagonist.  I think he might actually be one of my favorite minor characters.  He’s incredibly well realized from his first appearance in The Puppet Show: instantly this note perfect pastiche of a self-important petty little bully with just barely enough power to be really dangerous.  The show uses him as a contrast to the other adults in Buffy’s life (Giles, Joyce) to such good effect (especially at the beginning of Season 3).  And Armin Shimerman is fantastic in the role: you can see why the writers gave up on their initial idea of Sunnydale High having a whole string of different principals who got killed off every few episodes.
He’s such a well done comic character too: funny, but never slipping up and giving the impression of being in on the joke.  We’re only seven episodes in, and we’ve already gotten gems like “I can smell trouble – it’s like a sixth sense.” and  “What are you, ghouls?  There are no dead students here.  This week.”.  All delivered with this perfect growling sneer and no acknowledgement at all that what he’s saying is ridiculous.
He’s just fun, in a way that I really don’t think any of Buffy’s other non-supernatural antagonists are.  Yes, Buffy will continue to find the non-supernatural parts of her life hard after high school, but it’s all so impersonal after this.  Other than Maggie Walsh (who is really part of the supernatural world anyway, as head of the Initiative, so barely counts), none of the bad professors she has to deal with in college are recurring characters.  Neither is her bank manager, or her boss at the Doublemeat Palace, or Dawn’s security worker. (Okay, very technically her second manager at the DMP is recurring, but you know what I mean.)
Of course, being a Slayer still causes Buffy problems in her day to day life, but for whatever reason – I don’t know if it was a deliberate choice or just a result of the later seasons becoming increasingly serialized and story-arc focused - the show becomes less and less concerned with showing us that everyday life.  (Is Parker the last recurring character of any importance who never finds out that Buffy is the Slayer?) And when Buffy goes back to work at the high school in Season 7, everything’s so tied up with her being the Slayer that we just don’t get the same juggling-two-lives thing anymore.
And ... well, I guess Buffy doesn't miss Snyder. I can hardly blame her. But I do.

ok I saw the reblog of your star trek books post about someone asking for recs someday, but I’m impatient and have decided I am not gonna wait and that I will send the recs ask MYSELF dammit!!
I feel like i’ve never gotten into the books because I’m worried they will be bad, so if you have any TOS/DS9 book recs I would LOVE to hear them — I have consumed all Star Trek content made up until this point and am so so desperate for new material
thank you SOOO much for asking i love any excuse to talk about st books!!! (though it is kinda funny cause that same person talking about recs did end up messaging me already lol)
for TOS i would say the best ones are:
Killing Time by Della Van Hise — famously gay and for good reason, it’s just blatantly romantic spirk content. it’s all about how they are meant to be together in every alternate universe and that they are soulmates <3
Spock’s World by Diane Duane — bones, kirk, and spock go to vulcan because the vulcans are considering leaving the federation. really great plot and super accessible characterization for the main three!
Vulcan’s Forge by Susan Shwartz — follows two plots- young spock figuring out that he wants to join star fleet, and older spock dealing with kirk’s death and trying to move on. it’s really not as sad as it sounds and it adds so much to spock’s character imo.
id honestly also recommend the novelizations of the movies, they definitely add a lot of new content
DS9 is harder cause i love soooo many of these but some of the best are:
Hollow Men by Una McCormack — kind of a sequel to the episode ‘in the pale moonlight’, garak and sisko go on a trip to earth to deal with dominion war stuff (and everyone else has shenanigans on the station)
The 34th Rule by Armin Shimerman — basically quark whump, him and rom are sort of kicked off the station and go to a prison camp and the rest of the characters have conflicting feelings about this (it’s a bit overdramatic at times but i love quark-centric stories so 🤷)
Fallen Heroes by Dafydd ab Hugh — this one is pretty crazy, quark and odo suddenly travel 3 days into the future and find the entire station is dead, like Everyone died, and they have to figure out what happened and fix it (i love quodo and there’s a scene where quark vacuums odo up, need i say more)
Saratoga by Michael jan Friedman — sisko is meeting with the other survivors from the ship jennifer died on. there’s sabotage, intrigue, betrayal and such and then the b plot is that odo has to pretend to be quark. so basically an average ds9 episode lol
there are definitely a lot more good ones but it depends on what characters you like and what kinds of stories you’re looking for ya know? please please message me if you want to talk ab it more!!!!

DS9: "Prophet Motive"
Tumblr media
Grand Nagus Zek returns to Deep Space Nine to announce his new edition of the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, rewritten to promote generosity instead of greed. When Quark investigates Zek's change of heart, he discovers that the Nagus recently had an encounter with the Prophets who dwell in the Bajoran wormhole! Also Doctor Bashir is nominated for an award or something.
All too often in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, there will be a story where they tack on an irrelevant Quark cameo so that main cast member Armin Shimerman isn't left out. They do this with all the regulars from time to time, but it sticks out more with Quark, since there are so many plots where it's tough to justify a scene with a civilian bartender. Once you start noticing this, you can't un-see it. Anyway, this episode is the flip-side of that, in that the Carrington Award story is totally pointless except to get everyone else screen time in a Quark episode.
As Ferengi episodes go, this one is pretty good. I suppose that's because it starts with the basic Ferengi premise (a race of greedy aliens) and does a big reversal (but what if they weren't greedy?) instead of diving deeper (i.e., let's worldbuild the greedy aliens until we run the gimmick into the ground). Quark isn't too selfish (he's basically doing the right thing!), Rom isn't too stupid, and Zek isn't too obnoxious.
The most remarkable thing about this story is that Zek and Quark enter the wormhole and commune with the Prophets! We'll see a lot more of them going forward, so it's easy to forget this is the first time we've seen them at all since the pilot, when Commander Sisko taught them about linear time and baseball. They feel a bit off here, as if they're a gentle parody of the actual Prophets to play into the comedy of Ferengi episodes. I can't really see them being all that judgemental about Zek's greed, certainly not to the point of examining the history of his species and altering his mind.
On the other hand, this odd encounter does set up a very important plot point down the line. Because of Sisko, the Prophets see linear existence like a game that must be played out. And thanks to Zek and Quark, they are very testy about those who would try to control the outcome of the game...

AAAAAAAAH YOU LUCKY SONUVABITCH!!!! IM SO JEALOUS YOU GOT TO GO TO STAR TREK LAS VEGAS!!!! YOU LOOK SO CUTE WITH EVERYONE!!!! I know you said you got a few autographs, but what’d they sign for you????
Sjfjfjsjsjsj thank you!!! Okay so, I brought a banner sized Federation flag for the guests to sign and I’m very happy with all the autographs I got (half of them I got for free because it was a part of my gold pass perks). However I don’t want to post a picture of it since said autographs include my legal name, which I don’t feel comfortable sharing (and I’m too lazy to take a picture and them blur out my name). So instead I’ll just post a transcript of what everyone wrote (in no specific order)

Reviewing Star Trek TNG - S1E4 "The Last Outpost"
Tumblr media
THE PREMISE
The Enterprise pursues a Ferengi ship, but both vessels are caught in a tractor beam which starts to drain their power. After determining that the source of the tractor beam is an energy-draining force field from the nearby planet Gamma Tauri IV, they form an uneasy alliance to save both their ships.
MY REVIEW
The premise makes it sound a lot more interesting than it is.
As a Deep Space Nine fan, I like the Ferengi. Two of my favourite episodes of that show are Ferengi-based. They're good for a laugh and usually entertaining to watch. But it quickly became clear that these original Ferengi were very different beasts. Although Armin Shimerman (who played Quark in DS9) does make an appearance here as a Ferengi named Letek. While the actors are obviously having fun, they don't make much of an impression in their first appearance.
Apparently they were intended to be the main villains of the series, the replacements for the Klingons and Romulans from TOS. I'm glad they decided against it - I can't take them seriously as antagonists. DS9 uses them to much better effect.
Tumblr media
This episode feels lacking in execution - two sworn enemies being forced to work together is a good formula on paper, and the ships' power being drained is a good element for adding tension. But it takes a while for them to get down to the planet and even then it's mostly just them talking, aside from a fun fight scene.
Also, Data displays the strength necessary to hold up a thrashing Ferengi with one hand, but can't break out of a Chinese finger trap. I'm guessing it's supposed to be played for laughs but it just doesn't make sense to me.
On the plus side, Tasha Yar actually gets to act like the Chief of Security for once, which is a welcome change from her being frozen, objectified and/or kidnapped. So that's a plus.
4.5/10 - Not bad, just a bit dull.

As a gentile I'm probably not qualified to make this post but I don't feel like people in the star trek fandom talk enough about the Ferengi being really obvious antisemitic caricatures, and how the writers of Deep Space Nine, and particularly the Jewish actors who portrayed the Ferengi, are the ones responsible for giving them the depth and meaning their creators say they intended
