Ch 14: Rumors

When they reach the bottom of the stairs they re-adjust their clothes to look more presentable for group breakfast. 

Billy (tragically) puts on the grey tank top Eddie carried down for him and they were ready enough. 

It was only 20 or so steps to the kitchen, but every motion was agonizing. Eddie needed to at least get to the living room if he wanted his painkillers out of his lunchbox. Billy had been content to carry him all the way into the kitchen and now Eddie was seriously regretting not taking him up on that offer. 

Instead, after a pathetic attempt at walking on his own, they compromised and Billy helped Eddie limp to the kitchen. 

When they finally enter the communal space, the conversations in the room stop and five sets of eyes land on the pair. 

Robin's mouth drops to the floor and the back of her hand comes in contact with Steve’s bicep at lightning speed. 

“Jesus Steve! I said fuck him not murder him!” she disapprovingly scolds. 

Steve flushes all the way up to his ears. His mouth drops open in shameful surprise as his eyes jump between Robin, Eddie, and Billy. In that order. 

Eddie and Billy explode in laughter, which makes the pain in Eddie’s ass so much worse, but fuck was that hilarious! He loved Robin so fucking much. 

“Hey, I asked for it Rob,” Eddie says in his boyfriend's defense. “Besides, it's not Steve’s fault he was blessed with a huge cock.”

“Eddie!” Steve squeaked. “Are you serious right now?” 

Eddie nearly bit through his lip to keep back his own amused giggle. 

“Sorry sweetheart, I assumed everyone here has already seen it,” he winked and Steve’s sudden shift from nervous, to anxious, to thoroughly unamused had Eddie knowing his ass was in for more punishment. (Fuck, yes!)

Tammy snorted, Chrissy smiled wickedly, Vicki laughed, and Robin make a very obvious sound of disapproval. 

“I would like to state for the record I have not seen it, nor do I want to-”

“Hey!” Steve said in his own defense, pointing an egg-covered spatula at her, “there’s nothing wrong with it!”

“That’s for goddamn sure,” Eddie teased, to which Billy and Chrissy nodded. 

“Anyway,” Steve laughed, high and manic, “ I made breakfast, so why don't you sit, well, Eddie don’t sit, you should probably stand, …sorry.”

Eddie laughed and hobbled the rest of the way to Steve, kissing him deep and with tongue before reaching into the frying pan and grabbing a small piece of scrambled egg. When he pulled away he popped the piece into his mouth and smiled, 

“Thanks for the good fuck and the breakfast Stevie.”

Do I ever!!! Thank you for asking me this because there are so many fantastic fics that I need everyone to read :) (These are not listed in any particular way, I love them all equally and couldn't pick my favourite if I tried.)

The Babysitters Club by salemofficialbb [completed] I don't actually know if I read this or Sub Culture first but I know that I consider both of them my introductory fics when it comes to Steddie. This fic is a chat-based fic that focuses on the older kids and their efforts to get Steve & Eddie together. It's cute and it's fun and it's one I reread when I need to smile. It's got Ronance, it's got Jonathan/Argyle and a ship I really like but don't see a lot of, which is Vickie/Chrissy. I laughed out loud while reading this, I squealed at times, I felt lighter after finishing it. (Also, something I did not notice the first time around because I'm v dumb is that most of the time when the characters send photos in the chats, the author links to a Tumblr with the photos so you can see them. It's immersive and I love it and yeah, please read this fic if you want to smile.

sub-culture by palmviolet [completed] I know this one gets recommended all the time but there's a reason for that. This fic is just mind-blowing in every way. It's beautifully written and the author has such a grip on the characters that they might as well just start writing for the show. It had me hooked from the first chapter where Steve helps Eddie through a panic attack and I read the whole thing in one sitting and my life is better for it, I think. The author takes such care in writing the story in a way that's respectful not only to the time period (make sure you read the author's notes because I have learnt so much about 80s gay culture from this author) but also with the characters. I really feel like I'm not doing it justice but I don't want to spoil anything about it because it's just amazing. If you haven't read it, please do. It's well worth your time. [Also, while I'm here, please consider reading palmviolet's other works such as the lathe (a time loop fic that's taken years off of my life) and their who says it was simple series (I am a simp for Eddie & Max interactions and would like to see more of them.)

Camp Folktale, Summer of ‘86 by cairparavels [WIP] I'm pretty sure I rec'd this in a Waiting Room author's note because I am obsessed with it. It's a fluffy little camp councillor's au and every update has me kicking my legs and losing my mind. All the ingredients for a good soup are in this fic: Steve being uselessly in love with Eddie, Eddie being uselessly in love with Steve, the kids being little shits and trying to get them together, the kids having fleshed out little stories alongside Steve and Eddie, Ronance, Chrissy and Fred (which I didn't expect but love) and Mews II playing a pivotal role in not only Steddie's story but my happiness. The author updates incredibly regularly and every update is great so don't let the fact it's a WIP put you off. It's worth your time and a nice cheerful story if you want a break from reading a lot of angsty fics.

all my ghosts (are with me) by steve_the_hair_harrington (peter_parkerson) [completed] This is a series of three fics that focus on Steve's reaction to sleeping with Eddie for the first time. The first two don't feature Eddie as a character but rather they focus on Steve & Robin as she tries to help him through his realisation that he likes Eddie. All of the parts are very well written and the friendship between Steve & Robin is spot on. (Not to go on a tangent but I also really appreciate the way that this author writes both Robin & Eddie as autistic characters. I felt it was handled really respectfully and also showed that two people can be autistic and have different ways of presenting it, which is always really nice to see.)

I Wake Up When Everyone's Gone by beetlesandstars [completed] This one is angsty as hell and I love it. This one-shot focuses on how Steve and, to a lesser extent, Dustin deal with Eddie's death. It's not a very long read but manages to do a lot in a little amount of time and I love when stories really focus on grief. It's one of my favourite things to read about/consume. Especially when they tackle the idea that grief isn't uniform and one person's grief isn't going to be the same as another even if they're grieving the same person. And this author does that beautifully.

Who the fuck reads to you in hell? by lichtbringer (percyinpanties) [completed] Another one-shot. This fic is about Steve reading Lord of the Rings to Eddie while he's in the hospital recovering from the events of volume two. I love the snapshots of his friends while he's in the process of waking up. I love the characterisation of Steve. I love that Eddie is alive and being taken care of. I just love this fic.

Keep it Steady, Eddie by outofmygourd [completed] Another classic when it comes to Steddie fics but one that I've only recently got around to reading. This fic features Eddie working at Family Video with Robin & Steve and the slow-burn but incredibly sweet story of them falling in love. It also features Robin/Vickie and I smiled every time they were mentioned because they're so cute and I love them. Like with Sub-Culture I don't want to mention specific scenes and ruin them but there are so many amazing scenes in this fic. I really loved how the author incorporated the kids in a way that felt really natural as well as Wayne. It felt like the world was alive outside of Steve/Eddie and I just loved it. Definitely recommend this fic and also Not so Bad by the same author.

Some Cupids Kill With Dice by horrormoviebarbie [WIP] I bookmarked this fic with Lady Gaga's speech from that meme because I truly felt like it encapsulated the way I felt about it. In this fic, Steve Harrington is a single father to Dustin & Max who falls in love with his kid's English teacher, Eddie Munson. There are four chapters out right now and each of them felt like a gift from the universe. This author not only understands Steve on a cellular level but manages to create a story so amazing separate from the events of Stranger Things (I believe this is an AU in which there are no monsters) that I would not only buy it as a published book but I also want to see it made into either a TV Show or Movie.

the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it’s you by greatunironic [completed] So I read the entirety of this fic in one sitting last night and it has changed me as a person. The characterisation of the kids as adults is perfect. The fear of rejection and the sunken cost mentality that if you leave something for too long then it's not worth touching? Killed me. The depiction of death (especially from a long-term illness) and the different types of grief that follow it took me out and put me back together again. I want to own Ed Levy's discography. I want to pin his interviews up on my wall. I want Madchen and Robin to be my best friends. I want this fic tattoed onto the back of my eyelids.

I don't know how many you wanted so I'm going to leave it there in case I've maybe gone a bit overboard. Fic Reading Challenge Stats Dec & 2022 Round-up

Hello Everyone! I’ve completed the stats for my year of fic reading. Once again, they ended up being pretty interesting - at least to me.

In 2022, I read (or reread) over 17.5 million words. This was down a bit from 2021 - but in an exciting turn of events - I read 604 unique authors (almost 100 more than 2021) and while 2021 had 60 different fandoms with 99 unique ships - THIS year, I read 96 unique fandoms and 144 unique ships! I fell in love with SO many new ships.

Once again, I participated in the @fanfic-reading-challenge and completed the Regular, Hard, and Extreme levels of the challenge. That is 277 tasks! It was tough but a lot of fun. The 2023 challenge should be ready for participants by the 15th (I believe) and I hope some of you will sign up. 

Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions for stories and pairings and fandoms and who shared their favourite stories with me. I could not have gotten through this year without you and I’m SO grateful for you. 🥰

My December Stats:

Of course, I wanted to slide in first with December numbers (and a soulmates fic rec as well) before I hit the pie charts for the year.

In December, I read just over a million words, 392 chapters, and 103 stories. The pairing I read most was Wednesday Addams/Xavier Thorpe (from Wednesday on Netflix). There are a lot of very short chapters in the fandom (I think because many authors are pretty young) - so when you find a long story it's like finding a cookie in a salad. ANYWAY - I love Soulmates - and Skin-deep as the Soul by @ozmathegreatand is WONDERFUL. You should read it. Come ship Wenvier with me! 🥰🖤

OKAY - now for the yearly stats!!

Note (35) means that I reread 35 stories more than once during the year. Scars by IndianSummer13 -- Together, Tomorrow by @sunshinebunnie -- Viper Radio by @lucivar -- and Eight Nights (the epic Nancy/Ace Hannukah series by @happilyshanghaied) are some of my favourite rereads.

This year, I read 1093 stories - rereads only accounted for about 19.76% so 80% of the time I was reading new stories. That's fun.

Unsurprisingly, Bughead is the pairing I read most this year (I seriously did a huge @thepointoftheneedle reread and it was glorious), but they went from 47% of my stories in 2021 to 27% this year. I attribute this to all the pairing tasks in the fic challenge. I really branched out with pairings and fandoms this year. Considering Wednesday only came out in November, it's pretty clear what I've been reading for the last month and a half to get them this high on my list. Same with House of the Dragon, Rings of Power, and Hellcheer - as we've only known and loved Eddie/Chrissy, Galadriel/Halbrand, and Daemon/Rhaenyra for half the year. I've read so many amazing new stories and have fallen in love with them falling in love a million times over again. It's been great.

Some special favourites this year:

tortured artist and torturer (series) by @nevinimus (Wednesday/Xavier - NR - Post Canon) - by far one of my favourites in this fandom. It's clever and sweet but there are also decapitated roses, so it's on brand. Love it.

Sweet Nightmares are Made of This (series) by the_retro_witch (Wednesday/Xavier - E - Post Canon) - I am DEVOTED to this story. It's huge and awesome and hot and fun and yeah. SO good.

The Trials of Mairon by @jackpotgirl (Galadriel/Halbrand - E - Post Canon) - AMAZING. Honestly one of the best fics I've ever read. Set AFTER Lord of the Rings but references stuff from Rings of Power. Galadriel gets to be Sauron's judge and jury.

new romantics (series) by @amandaashplease (Eddie/Chrissy - E - Musician AU) - I love a good Musician AU and this one was CUUTE (and hot!). I read this one and then ended up reading a bunch of other stories by the same author because she's amazing. Read her!

Reborn in Fire by rachiemcd (Daemon/Rhaenyra - E - Time Travel AU) - There are a ton of fics in this fandom where one or the other goes back in time and tries to fix the timeline. THIS is one of the best. And it's HUGE. Love it. A perfect happy ending (for almost everyone)!

Anyway - this is probably enough recs for now but if you every are looking for something interesting to read, hmu. 😘

Also anytime anyone says "you can't make that character trans" I read 5 more fics where the author makes a character trans. I'm fueled by spite and you're only making me more powerful.

Good Omens

Take My Hand, Take My Whole Life Too by @thebibliosphere; Have we all read it and loved it already? Don't care, still lovely, and with season 2 of the show coming up, well worth a revisit. Joy has a Pratchettesque style to begin with, which just makes it even better.

Star Wars (sequel trilogy)

Tomorrow (there'll be more of us) by dirmircharmer; someone on here was recently complaining that the movies didn't do enough with Finn defecting and the ways that could have led other Stormtroppers to as well. This fills that gap; also check out all the related fic at the bottom of it for more.

MCU

take it or leave it by kellifer_fic; The year was two thousand and a number I shan't say so I don't have to confront the passage of time. Everything was great, I still had faith in humanity, the MCU had not yet completely shit the bed and absolutely exhausted my patience. This is Clint x Darcy, which is not everyone's cup of tea, but mostly it's a very funny story about superheros attempting to lay low as normal people and mostly being pretty bad at it.

you are absolutely right regarding NP featuring a parade of horrifying clueless men masquerading as doms where all of marianne's masochistic tendencies seem to get repeatedly exploited without the scenes being "resolved" in any meaningful or helpful way. & instead of an ideal result of her feeling somewhat better and at peace, they leave her the same raw bleeding wound of a girl. and your take on connell needing to prove to himself he's good and good TO marianne when in reality many times he has been anything but... really brilliant. i don't think i've ever thought of it that way, as lost as i was in my harrumphing about what i took as rooney's repeated portrayal of slow vanilla sex being equated to true quasi-soulmate-bond love and affection. though i am first to admit i am a very sensitive girl who will immediately take things to heart if i see myself in a piece of fiction, and sometimes miss the bigger literary analysis picture. i'm so glad i sent an ask! also lol @ paul and daisy definitely sacrificing some canon information to say get behind me BDSM baddies of all types we got y'all. (also idk if you've seen/heard but paul mescal is in a film called "aftersun" that i believe is playing in select theaters right now which from my understanding is a very dreamy and melancholy potentially-hysterical-tear-inducing two hours of him being a young girl dad. i have not seen it yet because i think it might actually break my brain in a very dangerous way that i am not equipped for atm, and i am already pre-mourning my sanity and emotional stability for when i finally bite the bullet)

also as someone who has full on sobbed to your beautiful cathartic words many times over, i am grateful to you for exploring freaky mentally unstable girls who maybe should re-evaluate their relationship to sex but also maybe shouldn't because sometimes it's ok to be insane and slutty if you have a partner to support you through it! if drugs can't fix you maybe having 15 orgasms in a row can! even though i think i am different from your chrissy in many ways, i have never felt so validated by a character and never felt so hopeful and fulfilled seeing her clawing her way to happiness. sometimes it feels like you've taken stuff from the darkest stickiest ugliest parts of my brain and put it on paper and i'm like ok well now i've got to have a three week crisis to deal with this now, except it usually ends in some necessary acceptance and potential healing and always at least a temporary period of bright hope for the future (which is so difficult to come by some days). so thank YOU!

going a little out of order here, but i have found that the day i let go of trying to understand, rid of, or narrativize my sexuality, gender expression, and sexual interests and just say "whether it came from some event or is inherent or is a choice, it just is what it is, and that's okay" it paradoxically became way less of an issue for me, and way easier to express what i like and want just for the sake of it. in my opinion, there's only so much exploring we can do before it becomes a sort of ouroboros of "i'm trying to work stuff out for me" turning into "i'm trying to be sexually palatable in a new way".

"get behind me bdsm baddies" is so fucking funny. i have actually seen aftersun and was one of the original hysterical criers over it. i can confirm it is a life ruiner, and yet i'm going in for a rewatch on sunday. best movie of the year in my opinion!

I felt a little less alone in my cookware obsession last week when Twitter lit up with responses — positive and negative — to a tweet from Mindy Kaling: “I have a boring but important question. I need a new whole collection of pots and pans (like everything; a wok, griddle etc). Is there a brand that sells them all in a pack or box? I want this to be super easy! Thank you!”

Though Kaling ended up deleting the tweet (after getting heat for accepting an offer for freebies from Le Creuset — which she acknowledged by making a big charitable donation), she received many replies filled with cookware recommendations.

So which brands do people really like? There were many All-Clad mentions — unsurprising, given its favored status among professional chefs. A lot of Lodge recommendations rolled in, too, in response to Kaling’s ask for a griddle. Then there were the cookware startups: I was surprised by how many folks swore by Caraway, the newish brand whose selling points are poppy, millennial-friendly colors and a clever storage system. Less frequently mentioned but still recommended were GreenPan, Great Jones, and Equal Parts.

Learning about brands people love and discovering new ones is what this newsletter will always be about, even though next week will bring a change: Today is my last edition of Add to Cart, as I’m handing over the reins to editor Monica Burton.

Which is bittersweet for me, because I love writing this thing! Things to buy

One of the unsung tools of any professional kitchen is the bench scraper. As Sister Pie’s Lisa Ludwinski said on Eater’s Instagram Live today, “It’s not that fancy and it’s extremely versatile.” Use it for cutting dough, breaking down frozen butter, scraping up crumbs, and a million other little things.

Also on Instagram Live this week, Smitten Kitchen’s Deb Perelman recommended a Scandinavian-style whisk, which has a small, rounded head that can get around the edges of your pots and pans.

For the cutesy crowd (I see y’all), these enamel food pins by New York-based illustrator Dingding Hu are a tiny delight.

There may be no better slogan to sum up this time in our lives: “This too shall pasta.” Get it on a pasta shirt.

Things to know

Face masks have quickly morphed from purely clinical equipment to everyday apparel, and with that comes all sorts of considerations, like: How does one drink to-go beverages while wearing a mask? (It may sound like a callous question, but I myself encountered the dilemma after buying a to-go iced latte and promptly struggling like an idiot.) Fast Company profiled one mask maker whose solution is a tiny flap, just big enough to poke a straw through.

I have pretty much zero to add to the Alison Roman-Chrissy Teigen kerfuffle from over the past few days. The one news-you-can-use (should you want to) nugget I’ll call out from Roman’s viral interview: “I have a collaboration coming out with [the cookware startup] Material, a capsule collection. It’s limited edition, a few tools that I designed that are based on tools that I use that aren’t in production anywhere — vintage spoons and very specific things that are one-offs that I found at antique markets that they have made for me.”

Also on the cookware startup front: Food publication Saveur now has its own line of cookware and bakeware, including stainless steel pots and pans, called Saveur Selects.
