Listen, LISTEN, what makes Kanej such a compelling and unique ship is that they IN FACT don’t need skin on skin contact to love each other. They don’t need what other couples have to feel how they feel or to show their affection for each other. They have so much trauma and issues they have to deal with but that does not stop them from being willing to try to be together despite their struggles. They can barely hold hands but that does not erase the yearning and the love and devotion they so clearly feel for the other.
Kaz is willing to try to put himself together for her. He shows he cares by giving her everything she ever wanted: her freedom and her parents and a ship to hunt slavers.
And Inej canonically states she doesn’t think she could ever have a normal relationship with anybody else, she doesn’t want that, she’s not made for that life. What she wants is Kaz being willing to try to open up for her. The “I will have you without armor” is not about her wanting him to remove his gloves for her and give her physical affection. SHE DOESN’T EVEN KNOW IF SHE COULD EVEN HANDLE THAT.
What she wants is Kaz being willing to try for her. If she was going to make herself vulnerable and open her heart to a relationship with him she needs him to meet her in the middle. She knows what she deserves and she was not going to try if Kaz was going to give her nothing but his usual emotionally repressed self.
That’s it. It’s not about skin on skin contact, it’s not about Inej needing a man without trauma to fulfill physical needs she cannot even handle just yet because she was the victim of human trafficking and repeated SA in the Menagerie. And I DESPISE the writers for completely erasing that aspect and daring to imply something between Inej and Tolya. Tolya who canonically states he has no interest in romance, who literally says his books and his poetry are more than enough! That one writer with their stupid IG post, I swear they don’t have even the most basic understanding of these characters and what make them so unique and special. LITERALLY NO ONE ASKED FOR A LOVE TRIANGLE WHERE ITS NOT NEEDED STOP THAT SHIT RIGHT THIS INSTANT!

Rule of Wolves: LIVE REACTIONS PART 2 (The Ketterdam Chapters)
So I might drop a very, very, VERY unpopular opinion here that would probably get me drawn and quartered by most of you guys. But I'm generally curious and want to know what other people thought about these scenes...
So I'm going to say it anyway because I can be a pompous asshat who has a B.A. & M.A. in writing and criticism and it's not like I'm using those degrees much anyway *cries.* So. Here we go:
- oh oh oh my god, big things are happening and I don't even care bc WE'RE GOING TO KETTERDAM bc Nikolai needs Kaz to steal titanium for him omggggggg
Everyone in the Grishaverse: Man, this would all be so much easier if Kaz Brekker was here to figure everything out for us and steal shit. Kaz: ◡‿◡✿
- as they're walking into Ketterdam I am fucking GIDDY. I missed this place so much and I am so surprised to be here. Was anyone expecting any of the crows to be involved AT ALL in this book? Bc I certainly wasn't. This is like an unexpected easter egg. And I am writing this on Easter, holy shit.
- (the reason I love Ketterdam so much, I think, is because it reminds me so much of my beloved yet crime-ridden city of CHICAGO, but that's a-whole-nother post for another time.)
- oh Kaz and his disguises, I knew it was him from the second a cane was mentioned. Yes, Zoya, he does like the opportunity to dress up.
- Inej tarred and feathered them. She TARRED AND FEATHERED THEM IN CROW FEATHERS OMG what an absolute legend.
- "Never heard of her" HAHAHA FUCK ME UPPPPPP
- goddamn do I miss my crow heathens, I am loving getting new content with them in it so much. We have been so starved.
- Ok now here... is where I am getting into territory people might not like. I am a 100% Six of Crows stan and I love them all to death. However. This entire trip to Ketterdam seems like a side quest. In these chapters, I have literally forgotten about wtf I'm actually reading and have immersed myself in the 3rd book of SoC. From an editorial point of view... this is distracting me from the actual plot of RoW. I hate myself for saying this, but I would have edited ALL of it out. (plz don't kill me over this opinion) This is the Tom Bombadill chapter that Peter Jackson edited out of Fellowship of the Ring, you know what I'm saying? Fucking great, but not completely necessary. Nikolai is fighting a war, he could have sent someone else to do this.
In the back of my mind... I can't help but think that this entire journey is here to make the 75% of us who are reading this bc we love SoC... happy. People fucking love Kaz Brekker (I am people) and I feel like this is here to appease us, not because the story actually needs it. I'M SO SORRY. This is just what my peer-reviewing, editing brain is telling me. Ok, going back to reacting to my favorite people...
- did Kaz just admit he has a conscience? What a good boy.
- omfg they're going to work with Wylan. Is he going to design them bombs or something?! Do it, son.
- this is interesting seeing Kaz doing a job like... directly for someone else and not really for himself? Like Nikolai is his client haha
- "I'm not susceptible to flattery, only stacks of cash." ahahah truer words have never been spoken
- Jesper said he believes in gnomes. I cannot with this lad.
- is this Inej's crew coming to help them? They have jackal masks.
- ok idk about this Suli part. Since when are there Suli in Ketterdam? And why? How did Inej not know about them? Did Kaz know about them? I want answers.
- the more I think about it, the more I think all these random Suli callbacks are setting up for something BIG happening with the Suli later. I think Nikolai is going to do something for them or they're going to prove something about how they should be accepted and respected. Give indigenous people rights.
- moments between Kaz and Nikolai are so great because they're both really witty and they love to talk. They're just... so similar and so different? I feel like Kaz comes off as external Nikolai (confidence) and internal Zoya (coldness). That thought needs more unpacking hahaha
- last thing – I remember somewhere LB saying how that she might write another SoC book but that things will go badly for some of the crows. Guys, maybe we don't want another book. Things seem to be going SWIMMINGLY for the crows right now (minus Nina). Kaz completely OWNS the Barrel with his new properties and his tunnels and who knows what else. Jesper is practicing fabricating and Wylan says they don't even * need * money and they seem super happy. Inej is out fucking up slavers just like she wanted. They're all doing great. Maybe leave them alone. We don't want another Cursed Child. Idk.
...And that's that for now. If you want to talk/ yell at me/ tell me how wrong I am about all this, please do. Send me an ask or message or something. I want to know what other people thought about the Ketterdam detour.

Welllp These Are Books: the April 2021 Edition
Tumblr media
I did not read Romeo and Juliet this month. I read a bunch of other books. Like, a bunch. More than one series. Because Big Bang burnout is real and grown adults missing their deadlines is a real good way to stress me out. So, I read a bunch. Good books, very bad books, books that caused limbs to flail. For positive and not-so-positive reasons. Naturally, all those reasons must be shared. Under the cut with occasionally long and rant-prone reviews, as well as spoilers. Beware of spoilers under the cut. Please keep telling me what to read, internet. My library wish list is almost comically long now.
GIVE ME ALL THE WORLD BUILDING AND SNARK AND FIGHTING! WITH MAGIC! AND SWORDS! IT’S MY FAVORITE THING IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!
Shades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab
Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black. After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.
— Picture it, approximately twelve forty-seven am. My husband is asleep. I am reading. The second book in this series ends. And I say, right out loud, at what might now be twelve forty-eight am, HOLY SHIT IT JUST ENDED. Justin thought we were under attack. No man has ever snapped awake quicker. He was not pleased. At least not in the same way that I was about these books. Which I goddamn LOVED. Loved. The world building. The magic. The banter. Rhy and Kell’s relationship. Once more. RHY AND KELL’S RELATIONSHIP. Which I might have cared about more than the romance??? Maybe??? I cannot get over how good this world building was. I know people have quips with it, and that’s fair. I saw the “twist” coming in the first book, and I think trying to preserve that left some plot holes that are understandably frustrating. Because Lilah definitely needed depth perception to fight as well as she did. Also did Schwab really refer to her as a cross dresser in her author’s note? Yikes. She wore a dude’s jacket, like—c’mon V.E. Other than that though. I loved it. Also shout out to @peglegsjones for suggesting this one in my 2020 post and call out to me for taking so long to read it.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone. . . . A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.  A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.   Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don't kill each other first.
— I’ve talked about how little I cared about anything that happened in Shadow and Bone before, but I kept seeing gifs of the Crows in the Netflix show and my brain was like: huh, I could like them. So, after some help from the very helpful internet, I’m happy to report I do in fact like them. At one point, I slunk into the couch. Like that’s how overcome with emotion I was. Kaz ripped a dude’s eye out! For Inej! Matthias loved Nina’s laugh! I would like to hug Jesper. Seriously, this hit all my high points and world building and banter and I lol’ed at “scheming face.” I would like my hold to come through faster on the sequel.
THEY DID NOT CALL INTERMISSION HALFTIME AND MY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE WAS WAY DIFFERENT THAN THESE KIDS
The Off Campus Series by Elle Kennedy
Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date. All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.
— The first book in this series was free on Amazon. So, I read it. And really liked it??? It was so chock full of cliches and badly written tropes and Garrett probably should have accepted that Hannah didn’t want to go out at the start, but like—he was cute? And as we all know I am TRASH™ for stories set in the same verse, so, like, I just kept reading these trashy college hockey books. Trashy is a compliment here. God, these kids had so much sex. So much. An incredible amount, really. I once had a guy tell me he was physically attracted to me, but not emotionally attracted to me in college. Like, that was my college experience. The first and second books were the best, I think. I didn’t really like Dean that much.
MAYBE IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS A RABBI???
The Intimacy Experiement by Rosie Danan
Naomi Grant has built her life around going against the grain. After the sex-positive start-up she cofounded becomes an international sensation, she wants to extend her educational platform to live lecturing. Unfortunately, despite her long list of qualifications, higher ed won't hire her. Ethan Cohen has recently received two honors: LA Mag nominated him as one of the city's hottest bachelors and he became rabbi of his own synagogue. Low on both funds and congregants, the executive board of Ethan's new shul hired him with the hopes that his nontraditional background will attract more millennials to the faith. They've given him three months to turn things around or else they'll close the doors of his synagogue for good. Naomi and Ethan join forces to host a buzzy seminar series on Modern Intimacy, the perfect solution to their problems--until they discover a new one--their growing attraction to each other. They've built the syllabus for love's latest experiment, but neither of them expected they'd be the ones putting it to the test.
— Ok, I know that sounds bad. Again, I’m a creature of predictable habit and this was the sequel to The Roommate, which I absolutely LOVED last year. But where as the relationship in that one was kind of swoony, this one was...I don’t know, really. Everyone was a well-rounded character and the plot was good, but there was this semi-invisible something that made it difficult for me to get fully on board with the whole story. Honestly, it might be because he was a religious figure?? Also, they got together real quick. Like zero to sixty in twenty-six seconds flat.
I KNOW IT’S BAD, IT WAS BAD AND YET—I CANNOT STOP READING IT???
Too Wild to Tame by Tessa Bailey
Sometimes you just can't resist playing with fire . . . By day, Aaron Clarkson suits up, shakes hands, and acts the perfect gentleman. But at night, behind bedroom doors, the tie comes off and the real Aaron comes out to play. Mixing business with pleasure got him fired, so Aaron knows that if he wants to work for the country's most powerful senator, he'll have to keep his eye on the prize. That's easier said than done when he meets the senator's daughter, who's wild, gorgeous, and 100 percent trouble. Grace Pendleton is the black sheep of her conservative family. Yet while Aaron's presence reminds her of a past she'd rather forget, something in his eyes keeps drawing her in. Maybe it's the way his voice turns her molten. Or maybe it's because deep down inside, the ultra-smooth, polished Aaron Clarkson might be more than even Grace can handle . . .
— Last month I read the first book in this series and it was absolutely ridiculous. This one even more so. The Clarksons are still on the road trip (sans one sibling because she fell in love in a week in the first book) and Aaron was, like, not a root’able character? Very Edward Cullen I’M A BAD GUY, BELLA vibes and his relationship with Grace was so strange. Super rushed again, obvs. Meeting in the woods is weird enough. Professing love forty-eight hours later is decidedly unbelievable. Also there was a kidnapping involved? I totally put a hold on the next book in the series.
COME UP WITH DIFFERENT TRAUMA, I DARE YOU! OR NO TRAUMA. WHAT A CONCEPT!!
The Trouble With Hating You by Sajni Patel
Liya Thakkar is a successful biochemical engineer, takeout enthusiast, and happily single woman. The moment she realizes her parents' latest dinner party is a setup with the man they want her to marry, she's out the back door in a flash. Imagine her surprise when the same guy shows up at her office a week later -- the new lawyer hired to save her struggling company. What's not surprising: he's not too thrilled to see her either after that humiliating fiasco.
Jay Shah looks good on paper...and off. Especially if you like that whole gorgeous, charming lawyer-in-a-good-suit thing. He's also infuriating. As their witty office banter turns into late-night chats, Liya starts to think he might be the one man who truly accepts her. But falling for each other means exposing their painful pasts. Will Liya keep running, or will she finally give love a real chance?
— I had such high hopes for this one. Which is on me, I guess. Because I didn’t hate this one, but it was...not great. Maybe I’m just getting old and crotchety but I am BEGGING romance writers to come up with different trauma for their female protagonists. Not every woman has to have been assaulted to rationalize their current personality. Doesn’t have to happen. Like, ok, yes it does happen. Far more than it should. But that’s an entirely different story, and I am so tired of female characters getting absolutely destroyed by their past only to have that be their defining characteristic for so much of the book. Until a nice man they were initially mean to shows up and he’s UNDERSTANDING and he CARES and it’s just, bleh. It’s bleh. Tired and predictable and I’m over it.
IN WHICH I SHOULD HAVE LOOKED AT THE COVER
Much Ado About You by Samantha Young
At thirty-three-years old Evangeline Starling’s life in Chicago is missing that special something. And when she’s passed over for promotion at work, Evie realizes she needs to make a change. Some time away to regain perspective might be just the thing. In a burst of impulsivity, she plans a holiday in a quaint English village. The holiday package comes with a temporary position at Much Ado About Books, the bookstore located beneath her rental apartment. There’s no better dream vacation for the bookish Evie, a life-long Shakespeare lover. Not only is Evie swept up in running the delightful store as soon as she arrives, she’s drawn into the lives, loves and drama of the friendly villagers. Including Roane Robson, the charismatic and sexy farmer who tempts Evie every day with his friendly flirtations. Evie is determined to keep him at bay because a holiday romance can only end in heartbreak, right? But Evie can’t deny their connection and longs to trust in her handsome farmer that their whirlwind romance could turn in to the forever kind of love.
— Ok, so I had had this book on hold for so long that I genuinely forgot about it and forgot who it was written by. Samantha Young wrote that one book that I called the worst book I had ever read. Only I did not realize that when I started reading this one. So, you see how this sets us up for disaster. Because this book was a disaster. Everyone was goddamn annoying. And whiny. Shit, everyone whined. About everything. Also, the actual writing was atrocious. I am not usually one to be like “men can’t write,” but at one point I told both @shireness-says and @optomisticgirl that this book must have been secretly written by a man because no woman writing it would be so obsessed with pointing out where her cellulite was. Like, what??? Also the first sex scene? Oh my God, I laughed. Guffawed. The so-called love interest literally asked: “Are we going to have sex now?” And then they just did. It was so bad. Also there was a dog? Who went everywhere with the so-called love interest. And they just never explained that? I thought it was going to be part of some crushing and depressing backstory. Nah, he was just there.
HOLY SHIT THIS WAS SO DUMB I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS WAS A BOOK! A BOOK MEANT FOR YOUNG ADULTS! WHAT IS YOUNG ADULT???
The Queen’s Secret by Melissa de la Cruz
Lilac's birthright makes her the Queen of Renovia, and a forced marriage made her the Queen of Montrice. But being a ruler does not mean making the rules. For Lilac, taking the throne means giving up the opportunity to be with love of her life, the kingdom's assassin, Caledon Holt. Worse, Cale is forced to leave the castle when a horrific set of magical attacks threatens Lilac's sovereignty. Now Cal eand Lilac will have to battle dark forces separately, even though being together is the only thing that's ever saved them.
— Remember last month when I was like: can’t wait for my hold to come through on this sequel so I know what happens? What an idiot. THIS BOOK WAS SO DUMB I CANNOT BELIEVE IT WAS A BOOK. As always in my rage-induced rants, no apologies for spoilers because seriously do NOT read this, but Lilac (legit, that was her name) married some other dude but just kept fucking Cale??? Like she had a secret door? So he could come in and they could fuck?? I just—oh my God. So, all these things kept happening. Magic and bad stuff and horses were killed. Lilac’s mother was the absolute WORST. Honestly the most worthless character who at one point was like “well, my story is over, guess it’s time to leave,” and then just left?? Forced Lilac into a marriage of alliance and no love and then everything evil was defeated in point two four seconds. It happened so fast I wasn’t even sure it happened. So, then I’m like, ok, how are Lilac and Cale going to end up together? Because this is YA and that’s how it’s supposed to work. Only her being married and that marriage requiring an heir is something of a rather large hurdle. Don’t worry! Remember when Lilac and Cale were fucking? Everyone totally knew. Including the king Lilac is married to. Who is somehow like...ok with this? And tells Cale that Lilac is pregnant. ISN’T THAT WONDERFUL! Sure, because now they can lie and claim its the king’s heir. ONLY IT’S CALE’S KID! AND CALE IS COOL WITH THIS! His entire internal monologue during this is about how he realizes he might not ever be able to tell his kid he’s their father, but he’ll be around and that’s good. Wait, what??? But there’s more! Not only is Lilac having Cale’s kid, but the king she’s married to is in love with one of Cale’s spy associates. So the king and the spy are going to go hang out (and presumably have their own kids) at one castle and Lilac and Cale are going to go to another. Lilac and the king never get divorced or annulled or whatever. Everyone stays as is and married as is and—they all live happily ever after? This was presented as a good ending, I swear. What the shit, guys, seriously.

You know, the following seasons of Shadow and Bone need to make it more clear Jesper and Nina both are bisexual/pansexual. Not only will it make their characters more like their characters in the books, but it will also be so cool to have a man and a woman as bisexual/pansexual representation in the show.
I think one way to do this is to have them flirt with and maybe even fight over the same person, someone who is AFAB, someone who is fluid in presentation, someone who is bisexual themself.
Me. I'm talking about me. I want Jesper and Nina to fight over me. Is that too much to ask for?

Time for the latest installment of me providing my Thoughts™ and Feelings™ about Shadow and Bone as I watch it; this time it is on episodes 6 and 7:
I'm kind of disappointed Alina didn't stay with the Crows. That would have been so cool. But I honestly can't blame her for leaving, and it was nice for her to be reunited with Mal
Kaz's magic trick to escape the Darkling was fantastic! Get fucked, asshole! But also, the fact those two even stared down each other was like a weird battle between two angsty boys who aren't dealing with their emotions in the proper way at all but on opposite ends of the spectrum
I was wincing the entire time Alina was walking up to the stag. I knew the gunshot was coming 'cos, you know, the books, but it was executed well, and I felt so bad for the stag
The whole thing of the amplifiers being a part of the person's body instead of being like a piece of jewellery, like in the books, is metal as fuck. I didn't expect body horror in this show and I'm honestly not a fan of that shit, but it does show how serious and painful this is on Alina. And I like that it's not pretty, that the antlers aren't symmetrical (which is a shocker 'cos of how much of a perfectionist David is), 'cos it being ugly makes it real and devastating
David throwing that book was so funny and Jesper's reaction was priceless. I love them both dearly
Nina and Matthias' hostility is still great, but seeing them warm up to each other, literally and figuratively, felt so genuine and sweet. Like, that truly is Nina and Matthias, and that makes me so happy (I'm looking forward to being absolutely wrecked in the future)
Can I just say that I want to hug Inej? Like, all of the Crows' backstories are upsetting, but we are seeing Inej's more explicitly and it hurts to see my girl in pain like that
I haven't cried to the show yet, but that scene of Kaz and Inej by the fire got me so close. I was legit tearing up
Not to do a complete 180, but I did not care about the Darkling's backstory. At all. Boy, you made the Shadow Fold. I don't care how or why you made it, you're still a little bitch and I hate you
But God, it's honestly kinda nice to see the Darkling be his true and horrible self. He's such a good and easily hateable villain. I love hating him, tbh
Also, the Darkling saying his most famous line of "Make me your villain" was impeccable
However, that got upstaged by Kaz and Inej saying, "No mourners, no funerals." The ✨serotonin✨ hit me like a ton of bricks and I accepted it all with open arms. I need more
Stop roasting Jesper like this. He's always looking good; you're all just rude and don't recognise attractiveness when it's right in front of you. And I said three things before Jesper said them; our solidarity grows ✌
Milo returned! That goat is far too cute and I too want to give him a kiss on the head like Mal did
Lastly, I cannot wait for the inevitable cliffhanger that the last episode will have in store for me. I don't know what I'm gonna do when we finish it tonight. Probably wallow and crack open some fanfic instead of working on finals stuff

The Art of Bringing a Shadow and Bone Scene to the Screen
https://ift.tt/33t8mqU
This Shadow and Bone article contains major spoilers for Episodes 5 & 6.
As the director behind Episode 5, “Show Me Who You Are,” and 6, “The Heart is An Arrow,” of Shadow and Bone, Mairzee Almas was behind the camera for some of the major turning points of Season 1. These episodes see Alina and General Kirigan’s romantic interlude, Baghra’s reveal that Aleksander is actually the Black Heretic, and the coming together of the Crows and Alina for the first time. It’s when the season really kicks into a higher gear. Den of Geek talked to Almas—whose work you have previously seen on shows like The 100, Outlander, the Arrowverse, Jessica Jones, Shadowhunters, and Smallville—about bringing the Grishaverse, and some of these emotional and game-changing moments, to the screen.
The Work of a TV Director
“When you are a director for hire, you come in and receive the script and your job is to present the visual interpretation of the script,” explains Almas, when asked to explain the job of a TV director in simple terms. “As one of the collaborative artists on set, I take the script, I break it down, I think about the character journeys. I try to elevate the material, try to elevate the script, try to support the actors in creating their very best performances, understanding that they have a journey to make in your episode or episodes.”
Of course, for every director, the process of interpreting said script looks a little bit different. For Almas, she works by grounding the visual interpretation in the performances of the actors. “I start from an acting point of view, a performer’s point of view. It’s all about the performance. It starts and really ends with that. Everything else that we do is to support that proponent and to tell a story in a compelling way, right?”
For Almas, this means sitting down with the actors to discuss and articulate their character’s journey in the episode or episodes: “I would sit with the actors and say ‘How are you different at the end of the episode than you were from the beginning? Where are the moments where your character has agency, where they had a decision they could make? They could go left, they could go right, but they made this choice instead of that choice. And where are these big pivotal moments for your character?’”
The script is the source from which all other action will come, but Almas says the moments to be captured on screen are often up for some interpretation, which gives the director and actors space to collaborate on a specific vision.
“We’ll work it out so that we’re in a collaborative agreement,” explains Almas. “Where are these moments? And then I might say, ‘Oh, it’s on this line’ or ‘It’s around in here where you make a decision,’ and the actor may say ‘No, no, I think I made it earlier. It was over here.’”
Once the director and actor agree on an interpretation of the scene, Almas says she will design the shots and blocking to support that moment.
“I will always try to find a way to have the camera support the subtext of the scene, and make sure that everything we are doing, whether it’s the blocking or the camera work, are really supporting what’s going on underneath the scene.”
On that note, let’s dive into some of the scenes from Episodes 5 and 6 that Almas directed. I encourage you to watch the scenes before or after reading Almas’ commentary. I’ve included the time codes for reference.
The Palace Party Scene
Episode 5, 20:20 – 27:22
Den of Geek: This seems like a massive scene. Was this one of the largest scenes that you had to direct in the two episodes?
Mairzee Almas: Yes. It was a big scene with a lot of people, with a lot of moving parts. This was of course was done in the beautiful castle of Keszthely in Hungary. Many of our background performers did not speak English, but, honestly, people in Europe manage thousands of languages, it seems, and we North Americans can barely stumble through one.
You had a really long shot coming into the party too.
Yeah, so big steadicam shot to try and feel the energy of all of the people and see some of the beautiful costumes that Wendy [Partridge] has managed to get, to create.
How many extras did you have? I mean, I’m guessing this is a few different sequences this party altogether, but it seems like there’s a lot of people.
There’s a lot of people, I think we had somewhere 250, something like that.
And this is also really exciting because it’s really the first time we see the Six of Crows and the Shadow of Bone world coming together and the adaptation. Was that something that you guys talked about or that you really thought about when you were directing this?
Yes. For sure. Whenever we were bringing these two different literary worlds together it was important and fun and new and fresh, which was great fun. The Crows, of course they are the the heist vibe, a little like Oceans 11.
Yeah, I’m seeing that in the format of what you’re viewing here, with that quick pan cut.
Yeah. That was something that Lee [Toland Kreiger] had started in the pilot with this idea of a whip pan, it’s called, to go from one thing to the next, which is really fun and gives you that immediacy. We just did one right there. When we were going between storylines, between storyline characters, it was very good.
Something else that stood out to me about this episode and this scene, I think is we get more of Aleksander’s point of view. I feel like this is the episode that you have to kind of sell the viewer on Aleksander before you get that real turn. What was your view on that?
Like any good antagonist, he truly believes 100% in what he’s doing. And I think the character believes that what he is doing is the right thing and the right thing for the people, for his people, the Grisha. And I think he has been waiting for Alina for hundreds of years. He’s been waiting for this woman to be his equal, to be someone who understands him, to be his partner. And he is lonely and he has a deep ache for her. So he’s not playing it like just a hollow manipulator who doesn’t care. He has genuinely been waiting. And I think that the more the actor, Ben [Barnes], the more he is able to invest that character with a need, the more real it is, the more loving it is.
Yeah. He does a good job.
He does a good job. Yeah. And I was sowing a little bit of seeds in there with Genya and David as well.
Yeah. They don’t get a lot of screen time in the first season, but I know that a lot of fans of the book are really excited to see their dynamic. And there’s a cool shot of the Crows with the chandelier in the foreground right there.
Yeah. Thank you. And that was just to show that Kaz’s skepticism about Alina being a saint and the consummate con man doesn’t believe anything.
Alina is having quite a growth in this episode and I believe that Kirigan wants the best for everyone. He wants the best for his people and he wants the best for her. And he wants finally, finally, he wants to have a partner.
As you were saying before you had those conversations, I’m assuming, with Ben and Jessie [Mei Li] as you were directing these scenes.
Absolutely. And I think when we get later to the scene, when we were talking about the kiss and then Marko’s entrance, there’s a real adult kind of turn to that, as opposed to the childhood sweethearts that she had before. So things were changing for her and this is… we’re seeing it here is her becoming an adult, essentially growing up and starting to own her power. And as my grandmother would say “Settling into her hips.” Becoming a full grown adult woman, this is her beginning of that.
She seems so happy here. It’s kind of it’s sad knowing what’s going to happen after, but it’s also still great.
I mean, it’s the story about outcasts and people outside who have no place. And she’s finally feels like she has somewhere to be in and a community to be a part of. Finally, finally, finally, only to have it torn away from her again.
So logistically when you’re filming a scene like this, with the lighting changing abruptly while the Grisha do their thing, do you have different colored lights on set?
We did. And my director of photography is this incredibly talented man named Aaron Morton, who was fabulous. So we had a crane for the camera in this space, but we also had a crane with lights on it so that the lights could shift over top of people. So we could do both for the red lights when the Inferni were playing with fire, but also for Alina’s display. So we were moving light above and over people. Then the visual effects adjusted it and sort of gave it a texture. But really the moving of the light was done practically.
I’m going to end here, for this scene, but this was one of my favorite shots, coming in slowly on Inej and seeing Amita’s performance, I think it’s so beautiful as she gets to see Alina as the Sun Summoner.
Yeah. This is somebody, a character who is deeply religious, but if you think about what her background has been and how she has been abused and in the Menagerie, and what kind of terrible experience she’s had without any control in her life or any say in what has happened to her or her body, you have a sense that her religion is what has gotten her through to get to this moment to, to be alive, to still be alive.
That Darklina Scene & Baghra’s Reveal
Episode 5, 39:28- 46:31
OK, now we’re back with Kirigan and Alina, and they’re just having a nice time. Yeah. This is a beautifully shot scene and you have this, this moment coming up where you actually see their shadows on the wall behind them. Could you talk about that?
We have a bit of flares with Alina because she is the Sun Summoner, but yeah, I orchestrated the shadow. I mean, I had to choreograph the actors to find that shadow moment, and bless their little cotton socks because it’s sort of an artificial bit of movement for them. But it worked for them both. And I was curious if people would even see that if anybody would notice it or not.
https://falllingthroughspace.tumblr.com/post/649550888476737536/light-and-shadow
I’ve definitely seen people talking about it on social media.
Oh, they have?
Yeah, for sure. And then talk about the logistics of like a kiss as well. Because it seems like another thing to stage. Not to take the romance out of it…
Right, but it is a stage and you’ll see exactly where his hands are and what he’s doing, and he’s picked her up and he’s put her on the table. I mean, they are about to escalate it to where perhaps she has never been. And this is part of her becoming an adult and then they knock on the door being interrupted again. I go through it with the actors, exactly where the camera’s going to be, what I expect from them, what they’re going to do. And we make sure that they are 100% comfortable with everything and it’s done in a way that it’s private with them, with me and both of them and then me and separately with them, just to chat and make sure that they feel comfortable with what we’re talking about doing. And does it feel right for the character and not gratuitous in any way?
I do love that moment right there when you hold on Alina, and he comes back in frame kind of like a surprise, to kiss her again…
So that was a Ben Barnes special. Ben said “I really want to do this.”
And then see how, what I was doing here with the cameras, trying to do a little bit of a wrap around her, letting her be a little overwhelmed by her background. And in the kissing scene, in this whole sequence before Baghra comes in, the camera is wrapping a little bit. And that, again, makes the background around her feel like it’s moving. So she’s a little unsettled, things are happening pretty quickly to her. And it helps that something about subtext where we as an audience can feel what she’s feeling a little bit.
So a director’s job is not just to dictate the script as written out, it’s to try and find a way to take the audience on this roller coaster ride that the characters are on. And, as a director, with the script of course, sometimes the audience should be with the character, sometimes they’re behind the character, sometimes they’re ahead of the character, but we plot that very carefully and make sure that we’re maximizing the emotional experience for the audience. And really that’s the most important thing is they really have to have a visceral experience. And so whenever you can join in with Alina and what’s going on for her and then to have it so rudely stripped away from her with Baghra coming in…
Such a tonal shift. From Alina’s point of view, everything is going so well with Kirigian, and then we’re in this dungeon-like hallway.
Right, and it’s so much fun because you can see that there’s respect for Baghra, but at the same time, Alina is like “What’s the matter with you? It’s been too hot in your hut, your brain isn’t working, you know, come on. What, what’s the matter with you?”
She’s frustrated.
She’s very frustrated. She’s waiting… he said he’d be right back and then Baghra’s there talking about the Heretic.

Shadow and Bone’s Alina is What a Modern Feminist Fantasy Heroine Looks Like
By Lacy Baugher
Yeah. It’s a real shift for her. And it’s a real shift for the viewer.
Yeah. And then she finally stops Baghra, she jumps in front of her and stops her. “What are you doing? Stop.” And then Zoe Wanamaker—whom I love, absolutely love. I just want a whole spin-off series just with Zoe. Baghra’s fireside chats…
I would love that.
And this is really a lot of exposition that happens in the scene, but you do it so well, and these actors are selling it so well that it doesn’t feel like you’re just listening to information.
Right. And one of the challenges to this… Thank you for saying that. One of the big challenges to this scene is we’ve just built all this time for Alina to start to fall in love with Aleksander. And I can’t have her appear fickle, so somebody comes along and says “Oh, but he’s really a bad guy.” And then she has to believe him or her, rather, she has to fall into that immediately. Like why? And so Baghra has to work at this and this photograph, this painting is to show that. A several hundred years ago version of him that you don’t really pay off until I think episode six, and see his clean shaven face. But she has to convince Alina of his ill intent and terrify her. He isn’t a boy at all. He is eternal and he never stood a chance. I remember on set, having chills when Zoe says “You must hide.”
She’s such a powerful actress.
She is. Yeah.
I’d love to hear more about Jessie too. Because she obviously has way less experience than someone like Zoe Wanamaker and just carries so much of the show, so well.
She does, she’s got a lot of natural, innate talent, obviously. Jessie does. And the character is her on some level, right? I mean, she is going through a sort of a transformation herself, her own life echoes this somewhat, being kind of taken from somewhere, not really known and then brought into this big new world.
Yeah. Is that something you talked about on set?
A little bit. I mean, one of the things that I like, I love working with actors, let me start with saying that. And one of the things that I really enjoy doing is working with the actors to craft a performance over the entire episode. And in fact, over the entire season and to talk to them about how they, as an actor, how they are the author of their character on a lot of levels. They have to infuse the character with all of the truth and the honesty, and they have to be brave. And for Jessie to understand that she has a huge part in creating this character. Yeah, it’s in a book series and yeah, here we are, it’s in the script. Yeah, all that’s true, but she has to bring her own humanity and her own fear and her own bravery and all of those things to the character. And so what we were always looking for are those honest moments, those very, very honest moments for the actors to really connect. And part of that was by throwing all of your attention on the other character that you’re in the scene with. And just understanding that you, as an actor, you are enough, you are in it and the casting is done. You are that person, you are that. And to trust that by the time we’re on set all of the work, you did all of the rehearsals, all of the research you did for your character, it’s there. You’ve got to trust it’s there and now just allow yourself to be present. And she just naturally did that, and had some really terrific performances as a result.
Yeah. Yeah. That seems especially important for a young cast like this. Obviously there’s some veteran actors in Shadow and Bone, but there’s a lot of relatively new people.
You know, even the veteran actors like Zoe. I mean even veteran actors, everybody needs to be reminded of that as well. Every once in a while, just that you, you are enough and it’s all there. If you just trust it and just be present. And they were always working on that. So that’s why they were just very, very good. You know, Ben and Jessie together are phenomenal. Ben and Baghra, Ben and Zoe are amazing together as well.
How long did you have to shoot you two episodes? Was it one block?
Mairzee Almas:
It was one block. And I honestly cannot remember how many days we had. Something like 20 to 24, something like that. That’d be 12 or 14 days per episode is my guess.
Nina and Matthias at Sea
Episode 6, 8:00 – 10:04
So we’re going to jump ahead to the next episode, episode six and catch up with Nina and Matthias, who are not having a good time.
No, no, they are not.
This is a short scene, but I wanted to ask you about it because water filming is notoriously difficult.
Oh my Lord. So here we are in the winter in Hungary, this is a water tank that our special effects team built in a studio space, but it was still cold. The water was heated as much as it could be, but you can’t heat it too much, otherwise there’s steam coming off of the people. So it was cold. And it’s a tank with guys, special effects guys on the sides with literally oil drums, with a stick attached to them that they’re pushing back and forth to create the waves. We have huge fans coming from many directions pointing at these guys and rain towers and rain wands so that is spraying water at these guys and all of it with the back splash, that is a green screen, so that in the wide shot, we can add a visual effects environment. But the water is quite deep.
As I recall, I think that Danielle [Galligan], Nina, could stand up on her tippy toes and keep her mouth out of the water.
That sounds intense and it sounds loud.
It was intense. It was loud. They had to ADR all of their dialogue because of the heavy machines that were running throughout all of it. And the water depth, as I recall, had to be that deep because Calahan [Skogman] is so tall and so that he didn’t have to kind of crouch and to make it real so they could float, he had to do a lot of that swimming.
It was really difficult. The two of them were absolute rock stars through this. There’s just no way around it. They had to be soaking wet in all that wardrobe.
Do you know how long you were filming this for?
Oh, golly gee, I’m going to say it was about eight hours.
They’re really earning their paycheck here.
Yeah. It was very difficult. And then of course them coming, not just this portion, but getting onto the shore and walking off as well.

Shadow and Bone: How Mysterious Criminal Kaz Brekker Steals the Show
By Rosie Fletcher
Were there any Titanic references made while you were filming?
I’m afraid there were, and we stood there and we said “You know what? Jack could have fit on the door. Jack could have fit on the door!
That’s exactly what I thought as I was watching it. But I was also like, this is like a healing experience for me, years later to see them both survive, you know?
Yeah. That’s right. And these two are such wonderful people. When we were doing the auditions for Matthias, Danielle was part of them. And I think I auditioned five or six guys, put them all on tape, and with Danielle playing all these various scenes with these different guys, it was really fun to play with her. And she’s so alive and so awake. She’s just a fantastic actor, really terrific.
So you were involved with the audition process?
Yes, at this point. I think I had arrived in Hungary the day before, and then we were bringing in all of these young actors from all over the world to audition with Danielle and to do a little chemistry feel and honestly, they had already winnowed this pile of guys down to around five, and they were all spectacular. They were all spectacular by this point. They were really, really great choices. So it was an embarrassment of riches, but you know, Calahan was fantastic. He just won it, he just had that extra something.
Conclusions
Those are the three scenes that I wanted to talk to you about. I honestly feel like I could watch both of these episodes and talk to you about all of them, because there’s so much in here, but I really appreciate you taking the time to talk with me about what we did see.
Yeah. That’s my pleasure. And I’m so glad that you saw the shadow. I honestly didn’t think you guys would see that. I’m so happy you did. And look for other things in there where you can see the camera definitely trying to support whatever the subtext of that character is. And there’s lots of those. And that was something my director of photography, and I, we went through a lot and said, “I really want the audience to have a visceral experience here.”

Full spoilery review for Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
Crooked Kingdom By Leigh Bardugo was such a page turner. It was full of twists, turns, betrayal, family, ships...ugh I was/am completely in love with everything about this book. I decided for this review I'm going to try to just do it by character so...here goes. Jesper is such a great supporting character, I just loved how he came into himself in this book. He really because one with his power and his insecurities. It was oddly satisfying to me that at least one of these characters had a supporting family and a parent to look up to. His relationship with his father was sweet and well portrayed. I loved his father's dedicated attitude toward Jesper and how he even helped in the schemes of the book in support of Jesper. Jesper's budding relationship with Wylan especially made me happy. The cuteness and innocence of it made me feel so happy when in the deeper parts of the book. Wylan is an amazing character. I loved his Dynamic personality, he learned a trait from each of the crew as he grew closer to them and it really developed him into a fantastic person. I loved the plot line with his mother though, it helped you see the sweet innocent side of Wylan. The fact that he had someone to go back too after all the crap with his father was refreshing. Speaking of his father i fricking hate that man. All the crap he did to Wylan, when we read about the storyline of his father sending him to music school only for Wylan to be almost murdered by his fathers cronies. I was so sad for Wylan, it's not his fault that he can't read or right. The Part of the book int he Church of Barter when he held his own "reading" that legal document out loud was so empowering. Then the other councilmen stood up for the Wylan after hearing the crap that his father had done to him. When Jesper told Van Eck that he would help read to Wylan I can't tell you how big the smile was grew on my face. I was kind of disappointed with Nina's storyline in this book, I felt like we didn't get enough information on her new found power due to her use of jurda parem. Leigh made it clear that it was the opposite side of the coin int he fact that instead of taking power from the living part of the world she was taking the the power from the dead/darker side. I thought her new power was cool of course but I kind of felt that it was a plot hole of sorts. Usually when you have a power like that, or any power really it takes something out of you, like your energy or something. So like her old power giving her energy and making her feel alive when she used it, since this new power is supposed to be the opposite and it calls on death, shouldn't she have the energy taken away from her? Shouldn't she feel slightly tired or pale or deadish? Along with being disappointed with Nina's storyline I was very disappointed with Matthias'. I mean i've read enough books to know that no book series can end without the death of someone but still, Matthias' death shocked me. After all the crap he went through in Hell gate, being a strong mislead drüskelle, finally admitting his feelings for Nina, surviving the Night Court, better yet surviving Alys' singing, I feel like the death did not fit the character. Another slight problem that I had is how clutch Kaz was at fixing everything. While I 100% enjoyed all the plot twists that came with Kaz; character, and I fully appreciate all the things that he came up with. I love being thrown off course and tricked and Kaz did a fantastic job of keeping me involved int eh story. I found myself waiting for the next big Kaz stunt. But at at the same time I feel like I wish more had gone wrong. I wish that Kaz hadn't seen at least one other thing coming, that at least one other terrible thing had happened that impacted the story. kai always seemed to fix the problem, or to have planned the problem so we didn't realize that the problem wasn't a problem (I hope that made sense). Like when Wylan was "kidnapped" and tortured for information by the "Dime Lions" and "told them everything". Yeah I was actually kind of excited about that so that some more drama happened. Idk call me a weirdo if you want. Inej is my favorite character. By far. Best character. I love the development of her story and how she was a victim of Sex trafficking. It gave her character so much depth and I just loved everything she brought to the story. I feel like she brought out the best in all the characters. I loved how even though she seemed fine she had scars like Kaz. Kaz' scars were more pronounced but the way she would react subtly to touches was so amazing. It was great to see that fragile side of her even though she's the bad*** Wraith. I loved her and Kaz' plot together, how they both like each bother but are both a little too scarred to make any progress in any sort of relationship. But oh my god the end of the book. When Leigh did the thing with the ship. I was in tears when Kaz showed her the ship that he bought her, so imagine how bad my sobbing was when he revealed that he brought her parents to Ketterdam. And then when Inej invited him to meet them and he asked if his tie was straight. Oh my god I could go on about that for hours but just enjoy yourself again.
{"Come with me," she said. "Come meet them." Kaz nodded as if steeling himself, he flexed his fingers once more "Wait," he said. The burn of his voice was rougher than usual. "Is my tie straight?" Inej laughed, her hood falling back from her hair. "That's the laugh," he murmured, but she was already setting off down the quay, her feet barely touching the ground....... When he said "Thats the laugh"...alsdjflhsdladj}
{another part of the scene from a little earlier She felt his knuckles slide against hers. Then his hand was in her hand, his palm was pressed against her own. A tremor moved though him. Slowly, he let their fingers entwine.}
So yeah I fricking loved this book, the characters, the plot, the twists, the schemes. I just wish there would be a third installment so that we can follow up on Inej and Kaz at least. A future Novella maybe?
