Joe Lieberman died.

Joe Lieberman was primaried from the left and lost. Many states don't allow candidates who lose in the primaries to run as an independent or third party candidate in the general, but Connecticut does. So he created the Lieberman Party, ran in the general, and won.

When Obama was trying to pass the Affordable Care Act, Lieberman was the deciding vote, and he refused to vote for it until they removed the public option. He is the reason we don't have one.
