OUAT Thoughts Pt.37--Episodes 10-11
I have watched through S4E11; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for those further behind than I am.
—I feel terrible for Snow. She has to give up her baby again! At least this time she’s sending Neal off with someone she knows will take care of him.
—Anna being put on baby duty is amusing. She’s a lil spacey, but she’s fun, I bet kids love her.
—The Wishing Star is poetry. Anna went looking for it to save Elsa, and Elsa used to to save Anna. I love it.
—Still don’t like Kristoff, but it’s cool that he used an ice ax as a weapon.
—I think Rumple’s villainous stuff right now feels a bit like a regression. If I were writing him, at this point in his life I’d make him selfish with love, because that’s just how he is, but not a bad person. Being possessive of his loved ones works for him, and it’s also a consistent characterization because that has been the underlying theme for his entire arc thus far. Especially now that Bae is dead, it makes sense that he might lean a bit further in that direction. But why not play it different (better?) and have him extend his fierce, protective love to the woman his son loved? The mother of his grandson? I would love to see Rumple as brutal for the people he loves, but also extending his love a bit in honor of Bae. I would die for that Rumple even more than the one I’ve already got.
—I do understand why he wants to split himself from the dagger, but the quest for power doesn’t quite gel. Also, he swore to his dead son that he would try to be a better man, and since Baelfire was literally his Most Important Person™ going back on that promise doesn’t make sense. I can only hope this is like Storybrooke David at the beginning of the show, where he didn’t seem good enough for Snow, but it turned out that was for a deeper layer of character storytelling for him.
—I miss Mulan.
—Man, I don’t like Ingrid, but her death?…That sh*t hurted. The music was sad. She acknowledged her wrongdoings before she died. She died to undo her curse. And her version of heaven is running through a field with her little sisters. I just *can’t*.
—Do Anna and Kristoff ever get to actually get married? I’d love to see that, and since they’re already going back to Arendelle, it’s not even that big of a stretch.
—Snow going into a fit of motherly rage during her sword fight with Regina is awesome. Also, I’m pretty sure in a fair fight, Snow wouldn’t lose to Regina. Regina is too heavily reliant on her magic.
—I adore that the first thing Regina does when going under (or coming out of) a curse is to take stock of her outfit. And her Evil Queen dress was gorgeous. Big, rounded shoulders aren’t really my thing, but spiky shoulders rock.
—I didn’t expect to see Blackbeard again. I mean, he’s still not important, but I didn’t think he would even appear as a plot device. Worth it to see that bomb-ass red jacket tho. Pirates have got style.
—I love Anna. She’s so cute.
—Little weird that I’m supposed to feel sorry for Ingrid about the whole urn-imprisonment thing when she literally killed her own sister? I actually have two sisters, and if one of them killed the other I wouldn’t be like, ‘sounds about right, have a nice day.’ Her ass would be going in jail quick as anything.
—It’s also a little weird that Regina acts like only Henry and Robin believe in her, because it’s been established at this point that Snow believes in her, and mostly Emma too.
—Lol a dwarf with a crossbow.
—Actually the dwarves brawling in the streets was hilarious. Also I would not complain if Granny and Doc had a relationship, might be fun together.
—Will Scarlett is such a dumbass *amused*
—Feeling very upset about Hook. He doesn’t deserve to be heartless. And he’s gonna die, which is not a pleasant prospect.
—The Spell of Shattered Sight was so pretty and sparkly.
—Aw hold on, does Ingrid being dead mean Marian is unfrozen? Because I’m really invested in seeing Robin and Regina getting married eventually (and Henry getting a stepbrother!) and frankly I’d just as soon see Marian die.
—I adore when Hook and Will are in the same room and it’s mate *piratey* vs. mate *britishy*

Wish Me Away Random Headcanons
• For Marietta's 10th birthday Harley bought her a Hyena since she seemed to love Lou and Bud so much. Mari loved her new pet which she lovingly named Ha-Ha-Harley.
Bruce was so not amused. Quite the opposite in fact. Damian of course was thrilled to add another pet to the family. Alfred suggested Bruce make another Manor for the pets of the family. Dick immediately asked if he could get an elephant if they did end up doing that.
• Harley and Mari hang out sometimes when Mari goes to stop Harley's crimes as her fox hero self, Maid Marian (Dick and her watched Robin Hood once and she loved it). When she shows up her and Harley just stop what they're doing and have a "Pigtail Pals" Day.
This has resulted in many heart attacks for Bruce in the beginning who would immediately track them down. One such instance:
"Marian! Quinn! You've got to stop doing this."
"But Daddy! It's Pigtail Pals Day! You can't be here, you don't got pigtails!"
"Yeaaaaaah Daddy, you ain't got no pigtails! Unless you count the spikes on the cowl!"
"....."
"...."
"I..."
"Don't. I heard it as soon as I said it Bats. I may have daddy issues but they aren't near that bad to be a kink. How about I take mini pigtails to the movies and we forget this every happened? Deal?"
"Deal."
"Yay! Movies! Bye Daddy!"
"....Bye Princess...."
• Everyone asked her why she didn't want to go by Robin Hood when in her fox hero form and she said it was because they already had a Robin, and pointed at Damian, and a Hood, and pointed at Jason.
• She and Cass have weekly Barbie Movie marathons. Sometimes they let Dick join them. Cass really likes the ballet centered ones and her and Marietta dance along when the dance scenes come on.
• During a heist where Riddler and Penguin needing Catwomans help they almost got caught because they were caught off guard by the sight of Catwoman walking in holding a CHILD'S hand. A child dressed like a cat.
All she said was. "It was my night to babysit so let's make this fast. I promised Kitten I'd make grilled cheese for dinner."
The other shock was when the child look at Riddler for a very long time then looked back at Catwoman and said. "Kitty? Why are working with Hook Man?"
Friendships were almost broken that night.
• Tim forgot to tell the Titans he had a new baby sister but they found out during a team meeting when she literally popped out of NOWHERE crying and making grabby hands for Red Robin. Who immediately dropped the leader voice and started cooing to this small child!?
Team meeting was forgotten. A new meeting was held. A meeting all about Tim's new little sister.
• Duke was so proud because he taught Marietta how to fist bump, but she calls it knuckles. He went around showing everyone and taking so many videos. He literally cried when she fist bumped him back the first time and giggled.
• Babs loves Mari. She does. She does not love when Mari wants to mess with all her computers. She bought her a toy computer and thought that would make sure she wouldn't want to mess with babies but noooooo. Somehow it made it worse.
Marietta was more determined to touch her computers. She would climb chairs. Push over things she knew she could climb on. Or be deceiving and have Babs hold her while "innocently" playing with her toy computer.
• Someone once asked Gordon who his favorite Wayne was and he said Titus but that Marietta was a close second because she sometimes listened to him.
Everytime he sees her he gives her a GCPD badge sticker. He cried when she busted into his office and yelled. "GCPD Hands up! Up!" That day many officers were "arrested" for outrageous crimes. The best thing though was when someone brought in the Joker and she went over with her pipe cleaner handcuffs and went, "I arrest you."
"How about no?"
"I kick you then."
"I'd like to see you try squir-"
And then everyone in the precinct watched as little Marietta Wayne soccer kicked Joker in the shin and ran away giggling.
The guy who worked the security cameras gave everyone a copy of that moment for Christmas.
• Scarecrow once ran into little Marietta and he's not quite sure how he feels about her. He had heard a lot about the youngest Wayne so instead of just spraying her with his fear gas right away he asked her. "What do you fear most?"
"Fashion disasters. I don't need spray to see them, I'm already looking at one."
He had been so offended that he had to take a moment for himself but it was a moment too long apparently because next thing he knew he was being shot with rubber bullets by Red Hood.
• She guilt trips the hell out of reporters. Gotham's favorite lines are:
"Why do you stalk my daddy?"
"I'm not allowed to talk to strangers. Bye."
Literal just screaming and bursting into tears (she did it on purpose)
"Before you imply that I am a charity case, can I direct you to the fact that this is in fact a Charity Gala...for actual charity." (This is one for when she's older)
"Are you sure you're not a rogue?"

• She dropped a pro-Palestine song called Hind’s Hall, and all proceeds when it hits streaming sites will go to UNRWA

I will add more facts when inspiration comes to me. I also have an idea to make a Game of Thrones fanfiction, and this brought it back; let me know if you would be interested in reading it if I ever publish it.
2024 update: since her discography involves Ariana Grande, in this universe, someone else will play Cat Valentine in Victorious and Sam & Cat, and I’m only putting her in All That because I watched the reruns back in the day when I had cable and not because of what’s happening. (He should have apologized a long time ago instead of staying silent, and the fact he finally spoke up, said something, and “apologized” is wild).

Modern Inheritance: Look at my Son (Pre-Eragon)
Brom hunched his shoulders against the gust of snow flurries that tugged at his clothes as his horse clopped tiredly along. He knew he was getting close, could still feel the tiny threads of Selena’s energy leading to the small farm on the edge of Carvahall.
His stomach churned. Not only because he was hungry, but because he didn’t know what he was going to find when he reached his destination. Had the healers observations and Brom’s own hypothesis correct? He didn’t know if he wanted to be right or if he wanted to be wrong.
The Rider pulled his horse to a stop at the small house his spells were leading him to.
It wasn’t anything fancy. A simple homestead with a single story, a paddock next to the side porch. Brom could see a small patch of empty farmland behind the paddock, stubbled with the remains cut, dead stalks of grains poking up through the light layer of snow.
It looked like a home for a family.
Sighing, Brom leaned his forearms on the saddle’s pommel and examined the home, looking for some excuse to enter. He found a reason in one of the two work horses, a muscled bay, that had a pronounced limp.
Moments later found him knocking on the front door. His heart thumped in his chest. He had to play this along for a little while, then he could have the truth.
At the third knock a thin man opened the door. He looked at Brom with intense, dark eyes, then cocked an eyebrow. “Can I help you?”
Brom cleared his throat. “Ah, well, not to intrude, sir. I was passing by and saw that one of your horses has a quite a limp. Didn’t know if you were aware, and I just…”
The man sighed tiredly. “Yeah, I’m aware. Thank you.” He leaned out to look over at the bay as it lapped water from a trough. “Poor girl. I don’t have the money to replace her, but I don’t have the money to get her looked at either. I’ve been resting her since winter started, but nothing seems to work.”
“I might be able to help, if you don’t mind me working with her a bit.” Brom gestured to his own steed. “I’m a bit of a traveling storyteller, but I’ve picked up quite a few tricks for healing, especially where horses are involved. Can’t get anywhere with a lame animal.” He offered his hand. “My name is Brom.”
Out of instinct the other man shook his hand. “Garrow.” Then he paused. “I appreciate your offer, but as I said, we don’t have much money, and I’m not the sort of person to accept–”
Brom cut him off. “If you insist on paying me, I’d appreciate a hot meal and a porch to sleep on for the night.” He chuckled roughly. “I’m having a bit of money trouble myself. Don’t think I have enough for a room in town.”
Garrow rubbed his chin, obviously thinking it over. For a moment Brom was worried he would refuse again, but then a woman’s voice called from within the house, coming closer with each word. “Honey? Who is it?”
A woman appeared behind Garrow. Brom’s heart leapt to his throat when he saw a child balanced on her hip, but then he came to his senses. The boy was much too big to have been born in the last few months.
“This gentleman–Brom, was it?–Brom was offering to take a look at old Betty for us.”
“And you were going on about not accepting charity, weren’t you? Garrow, you are not going to let this opportunity slide after all the complaining you’ve done about Betty being lame. Let the poor man in!” She swatted her husband on the shoulder good naturedly. “I already heard his offer to trade. Brom, you are welcome to stay for dinner and sleep in our guest room if you can help our horse.”
Garrow chewed his lip for a moment as the woman went back into the house, the toddler on her hip staring back at the stranger at his door with wide gray eyes. “Fine, fine. You can let your horse into the paddock to feed. I’ll get my coat.”
~~~
With magic on his side, the horse’s leg was easy to fix.
To keep impressions up, Brom took to murmuring to the pained animal in the Ancient Language, weaving in his spells subtly as he checked each leg and gently manipulated muscle and bone. Garrow would occasionally ask how he was doing certain exercises, but mostly kept to himself, leanly corded arms wrapped in a well worn jacket and crossed on his thin chest.
After two hours of working with the horse, Brom managed to get Betty to put her full weight on her previously injured limb.
“Well I’ll be damned.” Garrow grunted. “You must be some kind of miracle worker.”
Brom brushed his hands off and gave the bay a pat on her thick shoulder. “No, no. Just had many years of experience. She’ll still need rest until it’s fully healed. I wouldn’t have her pulling anything until spring. These types of injuries can get worse and have a nasty habit of popping up again if pushed too early.” The farmer nodded, assuring the stranger that he would take his advice, and then, finally, invited Brom into his home.
~~~ “Marian!” Garrow called, hanging his coat on the rack beside the door. Instead of his wife, the child from before came tottering out of what Brom assumed was the kitchen. “Hey, big guy! Where’s your mommy, huh?” In one fell swoop, Garrow crouched down and lifted the little boy up into his arms.
The child giggled, reaching out for his father’s head with grasping fingers. Garrow humored him, letting him tug at his ears, as Brom followed the man’s example of hanging his coat. As if suddenly noticing the newcomer, the boy let go of Garrow’s ears and leaned over his shoulder, pointing with an exclamation of childish surprise. “Ah, right. Roran, this man here is Brom. He helped the horse get better.” Garrow looked back. “This is Roran, our son.”
Brom awkwardly waved. “Hello, Roran.”
Roran waved back vigorously. “‘Aye Bom!”
“I’m in the kitchen!” Marian appeared in the doorway that Roran had come through, wiping her hands on her checkered waist apron. Her dark hair was tied up in a loose bun. “Supper will be ready in another hour or two. How did it go?”
“Brom here has magic hands, honey.” Garrow set Roran down, letting him toddle off, and clapped Brom on the shoulder. “Betty will actually walk on her leg now.”
Marian flashed Brom a warm smile. “That’s wonderful! Thank you so much, Brom. Please, have a seat! I’ll get some tea for you both to warm up.”
Garrow led the other man to the living room and offered him a seat in a worn armchair. “I know it’s not exactly the cleanest place in the world, but it’s home.” Garrow apologized, hastily moving blocks, a baby’s play mat, and various toys away with his feet. “We had an unexpected new addition to the family a little while ago. Hard keeping up with two little ones.”
Brom’s heart skipped a beat as he accepted the offered chair. “Congratulations. Two children are quite a blessing.”
Garrow chuckled slightly as he sat across from him on the couch. “Ah, well. He’s not ours, really. He’s my sister’s boy, but she had to leave him with us. We love him as our own, though.”
A boy!
He had a son!
“That’s incredibly kind of you.”
Suddenly, a soft cry came from a room further in the house.
The farmer stood. “There he is. Excuse me.”
Brom nearly choked as Garrow disappeared down the hall. He had a son! A little boy! His heart bashed against his ribs as he realized that Garrow was likely going to return with the baby. He was about to see his son for the first time and he was the only person in the world who knew it. He braced his elbows on his knees, trying to calm himself.
Dear Gods, he had never been good with children. They were small, generally talked or cried a lot, stank, and were prone to all kinds of trouble. He never knew what way he was supposed to hold them, especially babies, and when they weren’t able to talk he was secretly terrified of not being able to help them or give them what they wanted.
Would he be able to handle even seeing the boy? What if he had to hold him? Stars above, he wanted to hold him, but at the same time what if he broke him? What if–
“Here’s the little man.” Brom started when Garrow spoke, gaze shooting up to see the farmer settling back onto the couch with a squirming bundle in his arms. “Sorry about the crying. It’s all they seem to do at this age.”
Brom cleared his throat, trying to fight past the lump he felt forming. He couldn’t see past the blankets. “No, it’s fine.”
Garrow gently bounced the child in his lanky arms, trying to soothe him. “Have any of your own?”
The question struck hard. “Ah, no. I’ve helped care for a few while traveling with troupes though.” Tentatively, as if he might be breaking some unspoken rule, Brom stood and approached the couch. “May I see him?”
“Yeah, yeah, sit. Shh shh shh, it’s okay, Unkie Garrow’s here.” Brom took the spot next to Garrow as gently as he could, his mind blocking out even the crying. He still couldn’t see him.
“Roran, what have you go– GARROW!” Marian’s flustered voice suddenly cut through the din. “Garrow, Roran got into your tools again and is about to smash a window with that silly hammer! My hands are full!”
“Shoot! Not again!” Garrow looked between the kitchen and the babe in his arms, clearly torn. His gaze settled on Brom as his wife again yelled for him. “Ah, here, can you maybe just–”
Before he even had time to answer Garrow transferred the warm bundle of blanket and baby to Brom’s arms and was out of the room.
Brom looked down, eyes wide and disbelieving. His arms began gently rocking the child of their own accord as a calm suddenly settled over his panicked mind.
The crying stopped.
And so did the rest of the world.
A pudgy face looked up at him from the bunched up blanket, slightly red from the screaming earlier, appearing a curious at the new face that gazed down.
Brom couldn’t breathe. Something welled up in his chest that wasn’t anything he had felt before. It felt like…pride. But that wasn’t it. It was something distinctly different but nameless, sending warm tingles across his entire body and forming a lump in his throat.
Then the baby gurgled and smiled up at him.
And Brom fell apart.
“Hi.” The Rider whispered, nearly choking on the word. He carefully used a finger to move more of the blanket away from the child’s face, almost scared to touch him. The babe gave him no choice, though, by reaching out with a chubby little hand and grasped the finger near his face with a vice like grip. Brom choked out a soft laugh, wiggling the trapped appendage. “Oh, look at you. Hi, little one.” The baby laughed back, and pulled the finger up to explore with his mouth. “Hey.”
“His name is Eragon.” Brom tore his eyes from his son as Marian entered with a tray of tea. She set it down on the table beside the couch and settled down next to her guest.
“Eragon?” The Rider felt the name bolt through his conscious. Such a weighty name for such a small thing. Selena had picked a name of power, of history and peace. The name that had started the Golden Era. “That’s a…a powerful name.” He looked back to the child in his arms. “He’s beautiful.”
Marian took a sip of her tea. “You’ve heard of it? Garrow’s sister seemed to know some history behind the name.”
“It’s a very special name.” Brom murmured, gently rocking the smiling Eragon. “He’ll grow up to be an exceptional young man with a name like that.” Unbidden, another smile split Brom’s face as he gazed on his son. “Won’t you, Eragon?”
“Do you want me to take him off your hands?”
Brom didn’t look away. “No…. No, we’re fine. I’ll see if I can get him to sleep.” Marian smiled at him, thanking him for a welcome break from stresses of taking care of a fussy baby while trying to get dinner ready, and returned to the kitchen.
“You’ll grow up to be strong, Eragon.” Brom whispered to the babe. In response, Eragon let go of his finger and reached out, touching the man’s bearded cheek. “You’ll blow the world away someday. I know it.” Bright blue eyes, not yet pigmented, gazed into the same tone of blue in the eyes of the man above him.
If only Selena could see them now.
~~~
That night, Brom slept in the guest room.
It was also Eragon’s room.
Whenever the babe became fussy, Brom would quietly and carefully lift him from from his crib, consumed with wonder at his little body, and would sit with Eragon on his chest. As the beat of his heart lulled the child back to sleep, Brom softly crooned to him in the Ancient Language, weaving the words to the age old cradle song from Kusta. He familiarized himself with the face of his son, gently touched his downy brown hair, and whispered the story of the first Dragon Rider, the story of his namesake, to him as he slept.
In the morning, as dawn edged into the window, Brom forced himself to come to terms with having to leave. His heart ached as he kissed Eragon on the brow once, placed him back in his crib, and gathered his belongings.
After a small breakfast, again cooked by Marian, Brom gave his sincere thanks to the family.
“If you ever come by again, be sure to look us up.” Garrow shook his hand. “I want to properly repay you.”
“You already have.” The Rider assured him. The warmth of meeting his son was slowly seeping away to be replaced this a deep ache with each step he took to the edge of the porch. “Thank you. And thank you, Marian, for the excellent meals. I have eaten at many courts in my travels, and your food has rivaled them all.”
The woman blushed and laughed. “Well, thank you!” She glanced back into the house. “If you come back, I’m sure Eragon and Roran would love to hear a story or two. Maybe you could tell Eragon about his name.”
“I promise I will. Your hospitality has been most kind.” Adopting the old Kustan bow, Brom bid his final goodbyes and mounted his horse. “Take care. Both your children are very special. Know that. I hope you folks have fortune smile on you.”
As he clicked the steed into a walk, a sleepy eyed Roran grabbed his mother’s leg and waved. “Bye-bye Bom!”
Brom didn’t look back. He didn’t want them to see him crying.
From then on, everything Brom did wasn’t just for the Varden, elves, dwarves, Alagaësia or vengeance. It was all for his son.
“Building a Family” Chapter 16: One Special Night
Tumblr media
"Papa, why do I have to dress up to see Doctor Hopper?" Roland asked, tugging on the polo shirt Robin had put on him that morning. He looked like he wanted to tear it off and while Robin understood his son's discomfort, he still hoped Roland kept it on long enough for them to get through their session.
Robin knelt in front of Roland, gently removing his hand from his shirt. "There's going to be a special guest today and I want you to look your best."
"Who?" Roland asked, frowning. "Is it Regina or Sophie? I don't think I need to dress up for them."
He chuckled, knowing his son had a point and marveling at how quickly the Mills' women became enmeshed in their lives. Robin shook his head. "It's neither of them. We'll explain it to you once we get to Doctor Hopper's office, okay?"
"Okay," Roland replied, trusting him as they headed out to the car. Robin helped him into his booster seat and got him all buckled in before heading to the driver's seat.
As he started up the car, he glanced back at his son. Roland looked nervous and Robin frowned. "Roland? Are you okay?"
"I'm just confused," he said.
"I know," Robin replied, pulling away from the curb. "But I promise everything will make more sense once we get to the office, okay?"
Roland nodded, trusting him completely. As he headed to the main part of Storybrooke, Robin hoped that everything went well and that Marian didn't let them both down that day. She didn't have a particularly good track record, which was why Robin didn't want to tell Roland anything more until they got to Dr. Hopper's office.
It was a short drive and Robin quickly found a parking spot near the office. He helped Roland from the car and ushered him into the office, his heart hammering in his chest the entire time. Robin wished he could just jump an hour into the future to see how it went – if his son was able to meet his mother or if Marian had failed them yet again.
Dr. Hopper greeted them as they climbed the stairs to his office. "How are we doing today?" he asked.
"Good," Roland replied, "though I don't know why I have to dress up today."
"I told him we would explain everything once we got here," Robin told Archie, hoping the therapist would be able to help.
Dr. Hopper nodded. "Why don't you two come in and get comfortable so we can do just that?"
Robin released Roland's hand, letting his son enter the room and pet Pongo. He lingered behind, to ask Dr. Hopper an important question. "Have you heard from her?"
"I have," Dr. Hopper replied. "She called a little while ago to confirm my address and asked about parking. She said she would be here at the agreed upon time."
"Good," Robin said, relieved. "I was afraid she wouldn't come."
Dr. Hopper nodded. "I understand but I think this is important to her and she's committed to going through with this."
"For now," Robin replied, unable to help himself. He then paused before asking: "Do you think I should trust her more?"
"I think she needs to earn your trust and it's understandable that you're suspicious," the therapist replied. "You're just trying to protect yourself and Roland."
Robin nodded, feeling a bit better. "She's hurt us both before and this time it would be worse because Roland will remember it."
Dr. Hopper chuckled. "You don't have to convince me of anything, Robin. I understand why you feel this way."
"Thank you," Robin said. He looked inside the room. "Should we go and talk with Roland now?"
"Yes, let's," Dr. Hopper replied, motioning for Robin to enter the room first.
Robin settled next to his son on the couch while Dr. Hopper took his usual seat. He did drag it a bit closer to the couch and smiled at Roland. "So, are you ready to find out who the special guest is today?"
"Yes," Roland said. "Who is it?"
Dr. Hopper nodded at Robin, who pulled his son onto his lap. "Remember how I told you that your mama had to go away when you were a baby?"
Roland nodded solemnly. "Yes, she loved me but needed to get help to be a better mama."
"Right," he replied. "Well, your mama is back and she wants to see you again."
"And she's the special guest?" Roland asked, looking a bit hesitant.
Robin nodded. "Yes. We thought it would be best if you and she met here in Doctor Hopper's office so he could help you both with this meeting."
"Oh," Roland said, looking pensive. For the first time, Robin couldn't read his son's eyes and that unnerved him.
Dr. Hopper leaned forward. "How do you feel about that, Roland?"
Roland shrugged. "I guess I'm excited."
That didn't sound very promising though and Robin glanced at Dr. Hopper, who was frowning. "You don't sound excited," he said.
"I don't know how to feel," Roland admitted. "I know she's my mom but I don't really know her."
"That's okay. That's why you're meeting her here with me and your papa. We can help you figure it out," Dr. Hopper assured him.
Robin rubbed his back. "If you feel uncomfortable at any point, just let one of us know. We'll step in and make sure you feel comfortable again. Okay?"
"Okay," Roland said, sounding a bit more confident.
Dr. Hopper stood. "I'm going to go see if she's arrived. I'll be right back."
As he walked away, Robin turned to Roland. "I promise you I will be right here. You'll be fine."
"Okay, Papa," Roland said, climbing onto his lap. He leaned against him, looking up with wide eyes. "I love you."
"I love you, too," Robin told him, kissing his forehead. He hoped his son knew that no matter what happened that day, he would always love him.
Dr. Hopper stepped back into the room. "Okay, Roland, your mother is here. Are you ready to meet her?"
Roland nodded and Dr. Hopper motioned for Marian to enter. She walked in, clutching a stuffed Teddy bear with an apprehensive look. Once she entered the room, she stopped and looked over Roland. Her eyes filled with tears and she pressed her hand to her mouth. "You look so beautiful," she told him.
"You look like the pictures Papa has," Roland replied, tilting his head as he studied her.
She laughed, looking relieved. "I have a gift for you. Can I come to you?"
"Okay," Roland said, sliding off Robin's lap so he could sit on the edge of the couch. He watched her as she approached, kneeling to be eye level with him.
Marian held out the Teddy bear she held. "Here you go."
He took the bear and hugged it. "Thank you, Mama."
"You're very welcome," she said, tears filling her eyes.
Roland tilted his head. "Why are you crying? Are you sad?"
She shook her head. "I'm very happy. These are tears of joy."
"Oh," he replied. "I didn't know you could cry because you were so happy."
Everyone laughed and Dr. Hopper said: "You can cry for a lot of reasons. It's just the body releasing emotions."
"Cool," Roland said, making them all laugh again. He then looked at Marian. "Where have you been, Mama?"
Her smile dimmed a bit and she stammered a bit as she answer. "Well, I've been a lot of places, baby."
"Why?" he asked, looking up at her with big, doe-like eyes.
"It took me a long time to find myself," she replied. "And to find what I needed to be a good mom to you."
"Did you find it?" he asked.
She took a deep breath before answering: "I'm not sure, baby, but I think so. And so I'm here to start being a mama to you."
He looked hesitant, glancing up at Robin before looking back at Marian. "Can I stay with Papa though?"
"Of course," she replied, looking a bit disappointed. "I'm not going to take you away from him. We're going to work together and don't necessarily have to live together to do that."
"Like how Sophie lives with Regina but Papa and I visit her?" he asked, twisting Robin's stomach into a knot. He prayed Marian remembered both his and Dr. Hopper's warning about how much Roland loved his sister and how she was going to have to at least play nice for his sake.
Marian hesitated for a moment before nodded. "Right, just like how it works with your sister."
Robin let out the breath he was holding. It wasn't the best response as she didn't mention Regina at all and he couldn't miss the bitterness in her voice. But it was a start, he figured.
"Cool," Roland said, nodding.
"So, Roland, what do you want to tell your mother about your life here in Storybrooke?" Dr. Hopper asked him, gently giving him something to talk to start bonding with Marian.
Roland's eyes lit up and he nodded, looking up at Marian. "There's lots I want to tell you! Like the park! The park is really fun."
"I'm sure it is," she said. "Do you like the swings or the slide?"
"The swings," he replied. "I love to fly though I can't go as high as Sophie yet. She can go really high."
Marian's smile tensed up and Robin saw her eyes dim a bit. "I'm sure she can. But you will be able to go that high one day."
Roland beamed. "That's what Regina said too."
"Well, I guess that means it must be true," Marian said through gritted teeth. She didn't even try to hide her bitterness this time.
Roland recoiled a bit and Robin cleared his throat. He gave Marian a pointed look before sliding off the couch to sit next to their son. "Hey, buddy, why don't you tell Mama about how you are learning to ride a bicycle?"
"Ooh, yes," she said, sounding eager to discuss any topic that didn't involve Regina or Sophie. "Please do."
"Papa got me the bike for my birthday! He and Uncle Will have been teaching me how to ride it and I'm getting really good. Soon I'll be able to ride it without the training wheels, right, Papa?" he asked, looking up at Robin with bright eyes.
Robin chuckled, ruffling his hair. "You're doing great but I think you're going to need the training wheels for a bit longer, okay, bud?"
"Okay," he said, sounding a bit disappointed. He then turned back to his mother. "But I can go really fast even with the training wheels."
She chuckled. "You sound like a little speed demon."
"He is," Robin replied. "I blame Will."
"Why don't you tell me more? Has your father taught you how to shoot an arrow yet?" she asked Roland.
Roland shook his head before going on about everything he had learned so far hanging around Robin's camps. As his son talked, Robin tried to relax but he could not calm his nerves. While it was going well except for that one hiccup, he still was on guard where Marian was concerned. He just couldn't trust her yet but he still did hope she would be able to earn it back.
For Roland's sake.
*the four ladies have a brunch friendship moment together*
I see Blount is among them... I see they are setting her up as Catherine’s friend in order to play up the whole betrayal.
Alright. Jokes aside, I realised how much I’ve played myself. I was inspired by @melusineloriginale ‘s sporks (which if all this TSP episode posts got you in the mood for PG show mockery I urge you to check out here - you’ll thank me later). In truth, Henry VIII’s early reign is a bit too late from my main area of focus for me to make intelligent jokes.
I’ll content myself with just bullet-pointing random thoughts that came into my head, and if some intelligent thought gets through, well that would be the pinnacle. In any case I’ll aim to not parrot some of the stuff that’s already been said, repetition can get annoying.
Tumblr media
This image embodies this post, but maybe not the show. I’ve noticed those Starz productions get better by the end.
First Scenes:
- The recap just reminded me how much I will miss Margaret Beaufort in the coming episodes. I know her portrayal was innacurate but Harriet Walter just made everything better.
- They are making such a big deal out of this whole ‘we were crowned together, we rule together’ thing in this episode - it makes no sense. Catherine was an influential Queen but she was definitely no more than a consort and never saw herself as more.
- Ruairi’s new haircut is pleasing to my eyes.
- When she says ‘Abuelo’ it’s super adorable awww
The Ferdinand and Charles V scene:
- Bessie Blount looks so much like Ursula Pole lmao. Also they totally got the Pole children’s birth order wrong and UGH WHERE IS GEOFFREY POLE???
- I like Mary Tudor’s actress and her facial expressions. However, this whole polyglot image they are representing is innacurate. I am fairly certain she knew no spanish and I recall reading a contemporary account which said that she was not very learned.
- I’m pretty sure it would be considered bad luck to prematurely crown your son ‘Henry IX’ while you’re still alive.
- I actually like the whole Grape motif in this episode. It’s probably the smartest thing they’ve come up with so far for this episode. I know a lot of you will be all like ‘there’s no record of Ferdinand being abusive’ but this choice sort of makes sense when you recall Joanna’s treatment. Also I appreciate them for not being tacky and showing flashbacks of more overt abuse eg physical. The sugared grape is also fairly symbolic (the sugar is like a gilding, the grape easily crushable)
- OMG the guy from Garrow’s law is playing Thomas More!
- AND PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME IM NOT SEEING THINGS? Margaret Pole x Thomas More is happening?? Please god that is a historical crackship I am getting behind. Yes. This is what I’m most invested about.
Margaret Tudor and Scotland Scene:
- The whole ironic cutaway to Margaret being all depressed after Charles Brandon’s statement about her charming Scottish king is such a cliché movie technique.
- If this were a more artsy film I would think the whole setup resembling a stereotypical middle-class family breakfast was done on purpose for humorous effects or to create a link with the past. But here I don’t have as much trust in the producers. I think they just failed to capture the time period accurately.
- The modernisms continue: ‘Negassi please stop playing’ idk, there just something so modern about this for some reason ahaha
- Also again, I’m getting tired of all this ‘Catherine is basically queen herself’, ‘Catherine is a political genius’, ‘Catherine Catherine Catherine’ ugh. I don’t think the producers understand that Henry VIII was a very autocratic and traditional ruler. He didn’t make any show of joint-rulership (correct me if I’m wrong).
- The teeth thing is funny, smart and I liked it.
Back to Westminster:
- I like Ferdinand’s actor!
- Also Catherine’s response to ‘who are you loyal to?’ was not that smart. I feel like the producers wanted us to be impressed. What if Spain and England’s interests conflict, ey??
The Joust:
- I care too much for the whole Margaret Pole plotline. I’m so invested.
- I could watch a series of More and Pole just exchanging lines. I love the actors too and this is my hope for this series. The whole frustrated parents is SO CUTE.
- I didn’t know More tutored Reggie, I would be curious to know more.
- The way compton says groom to queen’s stool is freaking hilarious. He looks like a pervert.
- Henry Pole is a darling and must be protected at all costs.
- Oh Christ oh Christ that eyeball shot was just... good job on the special effects guys. Don’t know what the point of that choice was.
- I found the whole armour mentions after interesting, it looked so set up as a PR campaign because Stafford speaking about the armour just sounded like a statement agreed on beforehand ‘should have worn the same’ and the Catherine with ‘steel in the bones’ and Ferdinand’s impressed face (it was him playing them?)
- Am I giving this show too much credit?
- Also whats up with “God save the Queen?”
War Counsel:
- Henry VIII’s actor is quite charismatic in this scene. It’s almost as if Catherine is the hothead and Henry the wise one that speaks less but more significantly. It almost feels like they gender-swapped them.
The Bedchamber:
- Did Catherine breastfeed the baby? I thought it was Anne Boleyn. Doubtful... I’m tired of the trope of ‘you’re a good woman if you insist on breastfeeding the child yourself despite social conventions’. For a feminist show, the writers seem very attached to some 1950s perceptions of motherhood.
- I feel like the age difference between Catherine and Henry is well conveyed.
Scotland Again:
- ‘All the sheep were pregnant’ 👀 oh touché Margaret. oh my. Did she just?
- I know they are playing out this disenfranchised Margaret arc to reinforce how great Catherine and Henry are (cheap technique) and to build up to her involvement in Flodden (innacurate historically but I know what the show will do). But I will say this: the humour is pretty good in the Scottish scenes! But I know it’s unintentionally so... (I highly doubt they wanted us to laugh at Margaret hitting James or calling Alexander a pig).
Westminster and the baby chamber:
- What’s are those red splotches on the babies face??
- Oh that shot of Margaret and silent Reginald :((( it makes me sad.
- And now the Poles are at church! I just love the look of them.
- That scene of Maggie and Catherine was needed, as we didn’t get the best friends vibe much in this episode. The whole thing looked a bit pagan though, but it was nice :)
The whole Ferdinand’s betrayal segment:
- The grape motif again was fitting, him snapping the fruit right before she gets to it even despite her knowing what he’s like and what he’ll do, was a good parrallel.
- I’m tired of hearing of this ‘Camelot’. Even in the novel, Camelot was Catherine and Arthur’s dream and... can we just live it up with Arthur?
- Ursula Pole’s, Bessie Blount’s and Mary Boleyn’s actresses look way too similar.
- I fail to see why Catherine thinks she’s turning into her father... she doesn’t strike me as much of a game-player or subtle two-facer.
- I’m intrigued what will happen with Oviedo and Lina... I feel like they won’t stay in England long.
- He was made knight bannaret... nice... but why does he thank Catherine publicly for this? It was in Henry’s gift that he was made a commoner Knight.. if this transpired irl Henry would have been gravely insulter.
Catherine’s Dead Baby and thereafter:
- Guys. In all seriousness, I don’t think the TV series is trying to imply that Catherine killed the baby with her negligence. I mean, they are so bent on us liking her they wouldn’t do that. It would be a bit too ballsy anyway. Remember the red splotches I mentioned earlier? Could those have been a sign that he was already ill but no one noticed/was in denial?
- The pebbles in hands would have had more emotional payoff if it had been established earlier if you know what I mean. Basically, this episode is too fast and entire arcs begin and end within it which extinguished any build-up.
- Oh man Henry is so sweet in this, how will they build him up as the tyrant he was historically if they keep this up?
Scotland Again:
- I must admit, I don’t like all those nicknames they keep using. But somehow James calling Margaret ‘Meg’ is nice and seems fitting.
- What’s a hermana sister?
England Last Mourning Scenes:
- YOU DID NOT BUILD CAMELOT ughhh
- Why is Catherine giving the speech and not Henry?? It turns out Catherine was more emotional historically then the whole perception of ‘perfect queen of stone’ to which some people hold her. However, I doubt it would have been proper of her to give a speech in such a emotional manner.
Conclusion:
6.5/10
Some of the dialogue was stilted, the costumes are confused as to which era they’re supposed to be (aesthetically distracting) and many other characterisation issues.
I don’t have high hopes for this series in terms of cinematography or art but I sure as hell expect it will be entertaining. So far, everything is just getting set up and I find some aspects promising. As you can tell I am truly excited over how the Margaret Pole plotline. I am also interested in how Henry will be portrayed, with Catherine being so OTT and pushy this episode Im starting to Stan him more. In this show he appears sensitive and serene and kinda... adorable. Kind of like a little brother hanging onto his sister’s skirts.
But in a way that is a disservice to the real historical figure which would not tolerate such a representation. I am very irritated by this whole ‘joint-rulers’ thing which is just sooo innacurate. These STARZ shows have an obsession with showing women turn into men for the purposes of feminism - I see.
Catherine overpowers Henry too often and it sometimes feels like he’s HER consort. Of course, the feminism in this show is schizophrenic as we get the overemphasis of Catherine as a 1950s motherly ideal with the whole breastfeeding angle (“you’re better than other noble woman who would find this beneath them”, “they’re not as motherly as you”).
So the relationship dynamic between Henry and Catherine is a bit off at the moment, but oh well.
Mary Tudor is a bit distracting with her dark hair but I find the actress extremely endearing and promising. I know there will be emphasis on her storyline too and I hope they’ll not be clichéd with it.
Modern Inheritance Cycle: Look at My Son (Pre-Eragon)
MODERN INHERITANCE
LOOK AT MY SON
Brom hunched his shoulders against the gust of snow flurries that tugged at his clothes as his horse clopped tiredly along. He knew he was getting close, could still feel the tiny threads of Selena’s energy leading to the small farm on the edge of Carvahall.
His stomach churned. Not only because he was hungry, but because he didn’t know what he was going to find when he reached his destination. Had the healers observations and Brom’s own hypothesis correct? He didn’t know if he wanted to be right or if he wanted to be wrong.
The Rider pulled his horse to a stop at the small house his spells were leading him to.
It wasn’t anything fancy. A simple homestead with a single story, a paddock next to the side porch. Brom could see a small patch of empty farmland behind the paddock, stubbled with the remains cut, dead stalks of grains poking up through the light layer of snow.
It looked like a home for a family.
Sighing, Brom leaned his forearms on the saddle’s pommel and examined the home, looking for some excuse to enter. He found a reason in one of the two work horses, a muscled bay, that had a pronounced limp.
Moments later found him knocking on the front door. His heart thumped in his chest. He had to play this along for a little while, then he could have the truth.
At the third knock a thin man opened the door. He looked at Brom with intense, dark eyes, then cocked an eyebrow. “Can I help you?”
Brom cleared his throat. “Ah, well, not to intrude, sir. I was passing by and saw that one of your horses has a quite a limp. Didn’t know if you were aware, and I just…”
The man sighed tiredly. “Yeah, I’m aware. Thank you.” He leaned out to look over at the bay as it lapped water from a trough. “Poor girl. I don’t have the money to replace her, but I don’t have the money to get her looked at either. I’ve been resting her since winter started, but nothing seems to work.”
“I might be able to help, if you don’t mind me working with her a bit.” Brom gestured to his own steed. “I’m a bit of a traveling storyteller, but I’ve picked up quite a few tricks for healing, especially where horses are involved. Can’t get anywhere with a lame animal.” He offered his hand. “My name is Brom.”
Out of instinct the other man shook his hand. “Garrow.” Then he paused. “I appreciate your offer, but as I said, we don’t have much money, and I’m not the sort of person to accept–”
Brom cut him off. “If you insist on paying me, I’d appreciate a hot meal and a porch to sleep on for the night.” He chuckled roughly. “I’m having a bit of money trouble myself. Don’t think I have enough for a room in town.”
Garrow rubbed his chin, obviously thinking it over. For a moment Brom was worried he would refuse again, but then a woman’s voice called from within the house, coming closer with each word. “Honey? Who is it?”
A woman appeared behind Garrow. Brom’s heart leapt to his throat when he saw a child balanced on her hip, but then he came to his senses. The boy was much too big to have been born in the last few months.
“This gentleman–Brom, was it?–Brom was offering to take a look at old Betty for us.”
“And you were going on about not accepting charity, weren’t you? Garrow, you are not going to let this opportunity slide after all the complaining you’ve done about Betty being lame. Let the poor man in!” She swatted her husband on the shoulder good naturedly. “I already heard his offer to trade. Brom, you are welcome to stay for dinner and sleep in our guest room if you can help our horse.”
Garrow chewed his lip for a moment as the woman went back into the house, the toddler on her hip staring back at the stranger at his door with wide gray eyes. “Fine, fine. You can let your horse into the paddock to feed. I’ll get my coat.”
~~~
With magic on his side, the horse’s leg was easy to fix.
To keep impressions up, Brom took to murmuring to the pained animal in the Ancient Language, weaving in his spells subtly as he checked each leg and gently manipulated muscle and bone. Garrow would occasionally ask how he was doing certain exercises, but mostly kept to himself, leanly corded arms wrapped in a well worn jacket and crossed on his thin chest.
After two hours of working with the horse, Brom managed to get Betty to put her full weight on her previously injured limb.
“Well I’ll be damned.” Garrow grunted. “You must be some kind of miracle worker.”
Brom brushed his hands off and gave the bay a pat on her thick shoulder. “No, no. Just had many years of experience. She’ll still need rest until it’s fully healed. I wouldn’t have her pulling anything until spring. These types of injuries can get worse and have a nasty habit of popping up again if pushed too early.” The farmer nodded, assuring the stranger that he would take his advice, and then, finally, invited Brom into his home.
~~~ “Marian!” Garrow called, hanging his coat on the rack beside the door. Instead of his wife, the child from before came tottering out of what Brom assumed was the kitchen. “Hey, big guy! Where’s your mommy, huh?” In one fell swoop, Garrow crouched down and lifted the little boy up into his arms.
The child giggled, reaching out for his father’s head with grasping fingers. Garrow humored him, letting him tug at his ears, as Brom followed the man’s example of hanging his coat. As if suddenly noticing the newcomer, the boy let go of Garrow’s ears and leaned over his shoulder, pointing with an exclamation of childish surprise. “Ah, right. Roran, this man here is Brom. He helped the horse get better.” Garrow looked back. “This is Roran, our son.”
Brom awkwardly waved. “Hello, Roran.”
Roran waved back vigorously. “‘Aye Bom!”
“I’m in the kitchen!” Marian appeared in the doorway that Roran had come through, wiping her hands on her checkered waist apron. Her dark hair was tied up in a loose bun. “Supper will be ready in another hour or two. How did it go?”
“Brom here has magic hands, honey.” Garrow set Roran down, letting him toddle off, and clapped Brom on the shoulder. “Betty will actually walk on her leg now.”
Marian flashed Brom a warm smile. “That’s wonderful! Thank you so much, Brom. Please, have a seat! I’ll get some tea for you both to warm up.”
Garrow led the other man to the living room and offered him a seat in a worn armchair. “I know it’s not exactly the cleanest place in the world, but it’s home.” Garrow apologized, hastily moving blocks, a baby’s play mat, and various toys away with his feet. “We had an unexpected new addition to the family a little while ago. Hard keeping up with two little ones.”
Brom’s heart skipped a beat as he accepted the offered chair. “Congratulations. Two children are quite a blessing.”
Garrow chuckled slightly as he sat across from him on the couch. “Ah, well. He’s not ours, really. He’s my sister’s boy, but she had to leave him with us. We love him as our own, though.”
A boy!
He had a son!
“That’s incredibly kind of you.”
Suddenly, a soft cry came from a room further in the house.
The farmer stood. “There he is. Excuse me.”
Brom nearly choked as Garrow disappeared down the hall. He had a son! A little boy! His heart bashed against his ribs as he realized that Garrow was likely going to return with the baby. He was about to see his son for the first time and he was the only person in the world who knew it. He braced his elbows on his knees, trying to calm himself.
Dear Gods, he had never been good with children. They were small, generally talked or cried a lot, stank, and were prone to all kinds of trouble. He never knew what way he was supposed to hold them, especially babies, and when they weren't able to talk he was secretly terrified of not being able to help them or give them what they wanted.
Would he be able to handle even seeing the boy? What if he had to hold him? Stars above, he wanted to hold him, but at the same time what if he broke him? What if–
“Here’s the little man.” Brom started when Garrow spoke, gaze shooting up to see the farmer settling back onto the couch with a squirming bundle in his arms. “Sorry about the crying. It’s all they seem to do at this age.”
Brom cleared his throat, trying to fight past the lump he felt forming. He couldn’t see past the blankets. “No, it’s fine.”
Garrow gently bounced the child in his lanky arms, trying to soothe him. “Have any of your own?”
The question struck hard. “Ah, no. I’ve helped care for a few while traveling with troupes though.” Tentatively, as if he might be breaking some unspoken rule, Brom stood and approached the couch. “May I see him?”
“Yeah, yeah, sit. Shh shh shh, it’s okay, Unkie Garrow’s here.” Brom took the spot next to Garrow as gently as he could, his mind blocking out even the crying. He still couldn’t see him.
“Roran, what have you go– GARROW!” Marian’s flustered voice suddenly cut through the din. “Garrow, Roran got into your tools again and is about to smash a window with that silly hammer! My hands are full!”
“Shoot! Not again!” Garrow looked between the kitchen and the babe in his arms, clearly torn. His gaze settled on Brom as his wife again yelled for him. “Ah, here, can you maybe just–”
Before he even had time to answer Garrow transferred the warm bundle of blanket and baby to Brom’s arms and was out of the room.
Brom looked down, eyes wide and disbelieving. His arms began gently rocking the child of their own accord as a calm suddenly settled over his panicked mind.
The crying stopped.
And so did the rest of the world.
A pudgy face looked up at him from the bunched up blanket, slightly red from the screaming earlier, appearing a curious at the new face that gazed down.
Brom couldn’t breathe. Something welled up in his chest that wasn’t anything he had felt before. It felt like...pride. But that wasn’t it. It was something distinctly different but nameless, sending warm tingles across his entire body and forming a lump in his throat.
Then the baby gurgled and smiled up at him.
And Brom fell apart.
“Hi.” The Rider whispered, nearly choking on the word. He carefully used a finger to move more of the blanket away from the child’s face, almost scared to touch him. The babe gave him no choice, though, by reaching out with a chubby little hand and grasped the finger near his face with a vice like grip. Brom choked out a soft laugh, wiggling the trapped appendage. “Oh, look at you. Hi, little one.” The baby laughed back, and pulled the finger up to explore with his mouth. “Hey.”
“His name is Eragon.” Brom tore his eyes from his son as Marian entered with a tray of tea. She set it down on the table beside the couch and settled down next to her guest.
“Eragon?” The Rider felt the name bolt through his conscious. Such a weighty name for such a small thing. Selena had picked a name of power, of history and peace. The name that had started the Golden Era. “That’s a...a powerful name.” He looked back to the child in his arms. “He’s beautiful.”
Marian took a sip of her tea. “You’ve heard of it? Garrow’s sister seemed to know some history behind the name.”
“It’s a very special name.” Brom murmured, gently rocking the smiling Eragon. “He’ll grow up to be an exceptional young man with a name like that.” Unbidden, another smile split Brom’s face as he gazed on his son. “Won’t you, Eragon?”
“Do you want me to take him off your hands?”
Brom didn’t look away. “No…. No, we’re fine. I’ll see if I can get him to sleep.” Marian smiled at him, thanking him for a welcome break from stresses of taking care of a fussy baby while trying to get dinner ready, and returned to the kitchen.
“You’ll grow up to be strong, Eragon.” Brom whispered to the babe. In response, Eragon let go of his finger and reached out, touching the man’s bearded cheek. “You’ll blow the world away someday. I know it.” Bright blue eyes, not yet pigmented, gazed into the same tone of blue in the eyes of the man above him.
If only Selena could see them now.
~~~
That night, Brom slept in the guest room.
It was also Eragon’s room.
Whenever the babe became fussy, Brom would quietly and carefully lift him from from his crib, consumed with wonder at his little body, and would sit with Eragon on his chest. As the beat of his heart lulled the child back to sleep, Brom softly crooned to him in the Ancient Language, weaving the words to the age old cradle song from Kusta. He familiarized himself with the face of his son, gently touched his downy brown hair, and whispered the story of the first Dragon Rider, the story of his namesake, to him as he slept.
In the morning, as dawn edged into the window, Brom forced himself to come to terms with having to leave. His heart ached as he kissed Eragon on the brow once, placed him back in his crib, and gathered his belongings.
After a small breakfast, again cooked by Marian, Brom gave his sincere thanks to the family.
“If you ever come by again, be sure to look us up.” Garrow shook his hand. “I want to properly repay you.”
“You already have.” The Rider assured him. The warmth of meeting his son was slowly seeping away to be replaced this a deep ache with each step he took to the edge of the porch. “Thank you. And thank you, Marian, for the excellent meals. I have eaten at many courts in my travels, and your food has rivaled them all.”
The woman blushed and laughed. “Well, thank you!” She glanced back into the house. “If you come back, I’m sure Eragon and Roran would love to hear a story or two. Maybe you could tell Eragon about his name.”
“I promise I will. Your hospitality has been most kind.” Adopting the old Kustan bow, Brom bid his final goodbyes and mounted his horse. “Take care. Both your children are very special. Know that. I hope you folks have fortune smile on you.”
As he clicked the steed into a walk, a sleepy eyed Roran grabbed his mother’s leg and waved. “Bye-bye Bom!”
Brom didn’t look back. He didn’t want them to see him crying.
From then on, everything Brom did wasn’t just for the Varden, elves, dwarves, Alagaësia or vengeance. It was all for his son.

Scarlett & the Hawkes
After writing all about how I would restructure dragon age 2 to have Bethany & Carver both be companions, I started thinking about Scarlett and how things would have gone down if Carver made it to Kirkwall too.
I also started thinking about The Other Hawke (since in my rewrite I had 2 sets of twins being the starting point for the Hawke family) and what they were all like growing up together. I may have written a Lot more than I originally intended.
instead of Marian & Garrett, my older Hawke twins are Scarlett & Jasper
• Scarlett was the oldest of the first set of twins.
• Despite being the same age, Jasper took on the role of "baby" until Bethany & Carver came around.
• Jasper was certainly mother's favorite even if she outwardly denied it. Malcolm compensated by spending plenty of time with Scarlett.
• Neither of them showed magical prowess which was a relief to both parents
• They both loved to play as knights and would watch the templars training.
• Both learned to fight. Scarlett was best with a blade, but Jasper was better unarmed.
• They grew up spending time in the chantry, half listening to sermons, while far more fascinated with the chantry's guards.
• About 6 years old when Carver & Bethany were born. Scarlett was excited to have new siblings, while Jasper was a little jealous of all the attention.
• With two new babies in the house, Scarlett and Jasper found themselves being roped into "big sibling" duties. Afternoons they used to spend playing with sticks and running through the fields were now hours spent cooking or cleaning or holding one of the babies.
• Often got into scuffles with her brothers, especially when Bethany was involved. They would pick on her, Scarlett would intervene, the boys would run crying to mom, rinse and repeat.
• Everything got more complicated when Bethany discovered she had magic. She was 9, Scarlett and Jasper were 15. After her first magical incident was when they moved.
• Leandra and Malcolm sat them all down and explained one night how important it was that they all stay together, and that they keep Bethany's secret.
• Malcolm began to spend far less time with his other children, with his focus now on teaching Bethany magic.
• Jasper is still Leandra's favorite, and so Scarlett and Carver ended up becoming much closer. The two of them began training like she used to do with Jasper. Carver would never admit it, but Scarlett was his hero. Strong and fierce, she always stood up for herself and her younger siblings.
• Being mom's favorite got to be a bit stifling for Jasper and it led to a small rebellious streak. Sneaking out at night, drinking and occasionally gambling. No longer interested in playing with swords like his sister & brother, he kept knives tucked away where mother couldn't find them.
• Life continued like that, a family fractured, until Malcolm died. Killed, trying to intervene between Jasper and a thug at the local tavern. He carried him home, hoping Bethany could save him, but her magic wasn't enough. Neither of them ever forgave themselves.
• Jasper and Bethany shared in the guilt over the death of their father, and they even entertained the idea of running away. They would have, if Carver and Scarlett didn't first announce they were leaving to join the King's army. Neither Jasper nor Bethany could leave their mother alone, so their plan never came to fruition.
• When the king fell at Ostagar and the retreat was sounded, Scarlett had to drag Carver from the battlefield. If it hadn't been for her, he likely would have died fighting the darkspawn. The two fled as fast as they could to warn their family of the coming blight.
• Fighting through the darkspawn horde was an unending task. The four Hawke children stood together, for the first and last time. When the first ogre showed, Jasper was the closest, and the first to rush to his mother's defense. Despite their joint effort, the rest of the siblings couldn't kill the ogre fast enough, and Jasper paid the price.
• The Hawke family made it to kirkwall, down a son. Taking jobs wherever possible, Scarlett & the twins worked their way on to Bartrand and Varric's expedition.
• When it was time to leave, Leandra arrived in hysterics, begging her children not to go. Scarlett was adamant that they needed the coin if they were ever going to make it out of lowtown, but Leandra insisted that not all of them go. A compromise. One of the twins would stay with her, but the deep roads were too dangerous not to bring along extra help. Despite being closer with Carver, and knowing his desire to go, Scarlett took Bethany. Her magic would be more useful in the deep roads than another blade would be.
• In the deep roads Bethany found herself with the blight sickness inside of her. Despite Anders' best efforts, they couldn't find any other wardens before Bethany begged Hawke to simply end it for her.
• When they finally made their way back to the surface, Scarlett was forced to tell her mother and brother what happened. Leandra completely shut down. Carver took out his anger on everyone. Varric and Anders were frequent targets for not trying hard enough. Scarlett took the worst of the anger. She was the eldest. She made the choice to take Bethany instead of him. For the first time since they were kids, Scarlett wasn't the hero anymore. It would take several years for the anger to fade, but the illusion was forever destroyed.
• When Scarlett began to fall for Anders she got a bit of backlash from Carver. How could she love the man who couldn't save Bethany? How could she want to bring more magic into their lives? Another apostate to add to their burden, and an abomination no less. He backed off when she reminded him how hard he tried to save her. Both siblings ended up falling for mages, with Carver finally telling Merrill how he felt after Scarlett's encouragement.
• Things didn't progress very far for Carver & Merrill before Leandra disappeared. Despite their best effort, they couldn't save their mother. With her dying breath, she told her children how she loved them and she was so sorry about everything that happened.
• Scarlett left to confront Aveline, blaming her for not taking the warning signs seriously. They both argued, knowing there was no way to make it better.
• The two took their grief to the hanged man, exchanging stories about Leandra and Bethany and Jasper and Westley until the bartender finally sent them away. Aveline kept her wits about her, but Hawke was in a much worse state.
• Hawke finally arrived home, angry, heartbroken and still fairly drunk. She didn't find Carver, but instead found a letter. He was leaving to join the templars. With Aveline refusing to let him join the guard, it was the only place he could go to try and keep people safe from dangerous magic. Despite her best efforts, Cullen refused to let her speak to him while he completed his training.
• It took several months before anyone heard from him. The first contact came through Merrill. He finally wrote her how sorry he was to leave after finally working up the courage to tell her what she meant to him. He reassured her that he would keep her secret and do everything he could to keep the others from finding out about her.
• Carver would continue to correspond with her and with his sister, but he wouldn't see either of them again until several years later when Scarlett began working for Meredith, independently investigating blood mages in kirkwall.
• Despite not completely trusting Meredith, Carver stayed in the order, determined to live up to his namesake.
• As tensions continued to grow between the mages and the templars, Scarlett got word that her brother had been kidnapped. When she confronted Thrask and the mages he was working with, Grace used Carver's life to fuel her blood magic. Scarlett killed everyone she could get her hands on before Cullen finally arrived to apprehend Thrask and the other mages.
• When the fighting between the mages and templars broke out, Scarlett was determined to eradicate the blood mages who were attacking the city. Anders had other plans. When the time came she couldn't forgive him for the destruction he caused.
• She stood against the mages in the end, saving kirkwall, but ending up completely alone.

[1] Love your blog :) Reading about your GJ scene breakdowns, are there any scenes you really like that maybe you haven’t talked about because they don’t really involve the Ann(e)s. I have a few, which I decided on after I realized I couldn’t choose a favorite episode. Would love to hear your thoughts on them or any others. Besides all of the Ann(e) scenes (because obviously), the scenes I really like are:
athenaismyplace asked: [2] ep. 1, Anne in bed caressing Aunt Anne’s legs during the Dr. Kenny visit, love the caring and intimacy that showed. ep. 2, Vere being delighted to see Anne at her wedding, the idea that a real caring friendship came out of that heartbreak is nice. ep. 7, Marianna seeing Anne in that dress, her surprise and Anne’s “Really?” kill me. I think at that moment she was maybe caught off guard by the idea that Anne could be beautiful. ep 8, Anne’s face at that girl saying “Miss Lister likes trouble.”
hey :) hello! thank you so much! Like you I can’t choose a favorite episode, they’re all so good and it’s just impossible to pick a favorite. I love the scenes you picked that don’t involve the Ann(e)s, I’m gonna talk about them a little and then tell you what are my two favorite scenes that don’t involve the Ann(e)s :)
1. About the scene with aunt Anne in ep. 1, I totally agree with you. Right from the first ep. that little scene shows us how much Anne cares about her aunt and how much she worries about her health. And I love how she just stays there with her aunt like no one is in the room, talking and gossiping a little. Every single scene with just the two of them is so loving and warm but at the same time kinda nostalgic, it’s a strange mix but I love it.
2. One thing I love about the scene with Vere in episode 2, is Anne saying: “Our time on Earth is brief. And we should all strive to make the most of it. And be as happy as we can be.” – I love the fact that she’s saying it more to herself than to Vere. And I genuinely believe Vere when she says – “I’m sorry if I hurt you. I was always very fond of you. You must know that. I’m just… Not like that.” – I think she really was one of the few women who were not attracted to Anne but just appreciated her as a friend and nothing more.
3. The scene in episode 7: Mariana seeing Anne in a dress kinda breaks my heart. You can see that Anne doesn’t feel comfortable wearing that dress and the – “Really?” – is not of positive surprise but rather a “Why do you find me beautiful in this? I look ridiculous.” It was one of the most relatable scenes for me because every time someone is like “Oh god you should try on a dress, you’d look AMAZING” I’m like “???? what are you even talking about?”. The way Suranne showed discomfort in how she carried herself in that dress, and the fact that just putting that on made Anne Lister look not as confident, strong and attractive as she was with her regular clothes on, is A+ acting. That scene was not a: “Oh look how much more beautiful Anne would be if she just dressed in a more feminine way”, it was a: “Oh god look how wrong would that be if she dressed in a more feminine way” and I LOVED IT. It’s refreshing and it’s true to life. The fact that Mariana was surprised and thought that Anne looked beautiful in that dress breaks my heart because for me it shows that Mariana doesn’t really appreciate Anne for who she really is. I mean, Anne was visibly uncomfortable and yet Mariana didn’t even notice it.
4. I loved Sophie Ferrall so much lol not gonna lie.
Now, about my favorite scenes that don’t involve the Ann(e)s… The first one is the one in episode 2 between Ann Walker and Catherine Rawson. The way Ann firmly and passionately talks about Anne Lister and defends her shows us that she’s not some gullible, simple girl that can be easily manipulated. And I love it. – “No, I’ll tell you why they say it. Because she’s unusual and singular and clever, and because she doesn’t conform to the way people think a woman should look or think or be. That’s why. Miss Lister is one of the nicest, kindest, most clever and interesting people I have ever met, so you can tell that to your people.” –  She has her own opinion, she’s strong in her own way, and she’s not gonna let people tell her what to think or do.
And of course I love Ann’s reaction when Catherine asks her – “So she’s never tried to– to touch you or anything?” – Ann says: “Don’t be absurd” – but her brain is like “Oh god, being touched by Anne Lister…touched how, where? everywhere? Oh god I might faint.”
Tumblr media
Catherine asks: “Are you taking your drawing things and your watercolors?” – while a rated R movie is playing in AW’s head and her – “Yes, of course” – is so high pitched it cracks me up lol poor baby… in that moment she’s having an epiphany and her body is basically waking up but CR is RIGHT THERE so she tries to conceal, don’t feel, don’t let her knoooow!!!! But we know Ann, we know… It’s written all over your face that you’re thinking about Anne Lister touching you.
And, at the end of the scene, the way Ann looks at herself in the mirror is the cherry on top. Our little lesbian is on a mission from that moment on. Her expression is like: “I will do everything in my power to be kissed and touched by Anne Lister, I will make it happen!” (and, oh yes, she will make it happen, yes yes) and I love it.
Tumblr media
And here we also have the metaphor of the mirror, the mirror that reflects truth, that shows the real you, your real desires, and makes you come to terms with who you really are and what you really want. I’m not gonna go into details about what the mirror symbolizes but, in Gentleman Jack, the mirror is an element that holds quite a lot of meaning. Just to name other interesting scenes where the mirror is used as a symbol to tell us more about what is happening: episode 7, AL looking in the mirror before going away and of course at the end of that same episode, both AL and AW looking in the mirror at the same time and feeling a sort of connection.
The other scene I love is also about Ann Walker. It’s the scene in episode 8 where she finally leaves her sister’s house. Again, I just really love seeing Ann taking control of her life and just telling people they don’t understand shit. That’s my favorite thing about her. When I watched it for the first time, the way she says – “I’ll deal with it!” – and then the way she speaks to Captain Sutherland got me screaming at my screen like “YAS!!! YOU GO GIRL” and then when she says – “Everything, from now on, when it comes to me, is my decision.” – I was like “YAS GO GET YOUR GIRL GO GET YOUR BEAUTIFUL GIRL WHO’S A MESS WITHOUT YOU!! GO, YOU LITTLE LESBIAN, GO!”.
Special mention goes to the scene of Ann at Shibden asking for AL’s address lol that scene is gold!!!! Marian cracks me up I love her she’s the best I just can’t with her. And then my fav part of that scene: “She isn’t in Copenhagen. She’s here.”
Tumblr media
Ann’s little – “Here?” – kills me because till that moment she was like “Oh look at me being confident and bold, asking addresses, walking like I own the place” and then she goes into gay panic mode in one sec lol it’s sweet and yeah, I love it and I just really love Ann Walker…
One thing I absolutely love about Gentleman Jack, is how the show makes it clear that everything that was happening between the Ann(e)s was happening because Ann Walker really really wanted it to happen. Ann Walker’s scenes (the ones without Anne Lister) are fundamental, they leave no room for interpretation, they make it crystal clear that Ann Walker is not being manipulated and that Anne Lister is not being “predatory”. In this way GJ manages to kill all the stupid lesbian tropes not giving people the slightest chance to say stupid shit about the Ann(e)s’ dynamic being “toxic” or whatever.

Regina settled herself on the couch, feeling her back sink into the familiar cushions and finally let herself relax for the first time that afternoon. Baby Robin was balanced in her lap, her favourite rabbit teddy - a present from her father - gripped tightly in her small hands as Regina subconsciously bounced her knee which seemed to please Robin as she giggled and stretched her hands out towards Roland. Roland was seated on the floor in front of them leaning over a selection of Henry’s old toys that were spilt out in front of him. He seemed to have lost interest in the cartoons on the TV and was now playing with some old wooden figures of knights.
Regina had missed this. Ever since Henry had grown up she missed have young kids around. The sounds of them playing and the happiness of having someone to teach and to care for. She missed watching Henry sit on the floor playing the same old toys and she missed being able to hold him in her arms without him fussing about how embarrassing it was because he was a teenager now. She was always happy to spend time with Robin and Roland and would take any opportunity she could to do so, which is why she jumped on the offer when Robin explained that he and Zelena had to help the Charmings with some new problem on a never-ending listing.
Robin started to fuss in Regina’s lap, the displeased sounds she was making telling Regina that she was close to crying as she tried to squirm away. Regina swept her up into arms and stood up off the couch in one swift movement.
“What’s wrong sweetheart? Getting hungry are we?” Regina asked in a soothing voice, attempting to calm the child. “What about you Roland? What do you say we make some dinner?”
Roland shot up straight and nodded excitedly. The toys now seemingly abandoned at the thought of food.
“Okay.” Regina laughed gently. “Come on.”
She tilted her head towards the kitchen and watched Roland scamper to his feet, the toy knight - Regina noted the small bow and arrow in the figure’s hand- still clutched in his hand. Regina walked into the room and perched Robin on her hip as she set to work preparing the food. Roland helper her fetch the ingredients from the fridge as Regina place Robin down in her high chair. Robin had already calmed down and was now sucking on the ear of her teddy bear. Roland watched Regina closely as she cooked the food, lasagne of course. It was her favourite to cook and Robin had always loved it. Once she put the food in the oven Roland disappeared back into the sitting room while it cooked.
Regina once again scooped Robin up into her arms as she leaned against the kitchen table. Robin babbled up at her, reaching out for her necklace. Regina laughed when she clasped her hand around the pendant and seemed entranced by the jewel. Robin was growing so fast and with each day Regina could see more and more of her parents in her. She’d always had Robin’s eyes, while the colour was different - Robin’s blue mixed with Zelena’s green - she had the same curious and watchful look.
Regina wondered over to the kitchen counter again, Robin still sitting on her hip, and began preparing Robin’s food. She was still too young to eat the same as everyone else but they always made sure she was sat at the table with them during meals. By the time she was done the timer on the oven had started to ring, the sharp noise echoing throughout the room. As Regina switched off the alarm she heard the sound of small feet on the wooden floor just outside the door.
“Come on in.” She called. “Foods ready.”
She settled Robin down in her high chair and placed her bowl of food in front of her as she moved to dish up her and Roland’s. Roland sat in his usual seat, right next to Regina. She placed his plate down in front of him and pressed a kiss to the top of his head before smoothing his messy hair out of his face. Just as Regina moved to sit down her phone started to ring. She patted down her pockets before remembering that she had left it in the hallway.
“That’s probably your Dad.” She smiled down at Roland. “Keep an eye on your sister for me.”
Regina walked out of the room and picked her phone up off the table. She had been right, Robin’s picture was lighting up the screen. She could feel a smile breaking out across her face at the sight of his picture. Even after all this time of dating he still managed to make her feel like a lovesick teenager. She hated it. No, she loved it but if Emma Swan likened her to a teenage girl at prom one more time she might begin to hate her. Regina quickly answered the call and lifted the phone to her ear.
“Hello love.”
“Hello, Robin. Is everything alright?” She asked. The sound of his voice melted away any fear she had about what was going on with the Charmings. He sounded calm.
“Of course, I just wanted to check-in on you. I hope the children haven’t driven you crazy.” Robin joked.
“Little angels as always.” She laughed moving back towards the kitchen to watch them from the doorway. Roland had already tucked into his food and Robin was playing with her spoon.
“Well, they do have a lot of good influences around them.”
Regina watched Roland laughing at his sister who had now managed to tip her bowl over and spill half the contents out of it, Regina couldn’t help but laugh herself - with only slight annoyance at the thought of having to clean it up afterwards. She sighed a sudden feeling of guilt welling up inside her. These were the moments Robin should be having with his children, his family. Instead, he was off helping the Charmings.
“Robin are you sure I can’t come and help? You could come home, be with your kids.” She offered.
“No Regina. This is the first time in a while that it’s a normal problem, no life-threatening plan or villain trying to curse us all again. So what you can do is stay home, spend some time with Robin and Roland and relax for once. That’s an order.”
“Oooh, an order.” Regina hummed. “Let’s no forget who’s Queen around here Locksley.”
“Of course not Your Majesty.” Regina could practically hear the smirk in Robin’s voice as he spoke. “Wouldn’t want to incur the wrath of the Evil Queen."
"Hmm well be careful or this Evil Queen will hang up on you to go back to her dinner.”
Robin laughed. “You made dinner?”
“Lasagne.”
“Sounds heavenly. Think you could save me a piece?”
“Of course Robin.” She smiled.
“I should probably get going again. I’ll be home soon Regina. Say goodnight to our kids for me. I love you.” She could feel her breath catch in her throat and it took her a moment to regain her composure, her heart still hammering against her ribs like a hummingbirds wings. Our kids. It was the first time he had phrased it like that. It had always been “the kids” before now. Regina had always thought of herself as a mother figure to them and she knew Robin did too but to hear him say it out loud was different. She could never replace Marian or Zelena and she knew that, and she didn’t want to. Having them in her life was enough for her to know she finally had her happy ending. She was finally at home in the world.
“I love you too Robin.”
Robin hung up and Regina lowered the phone from her ear, a smile still etched across her face. She placed her phone back where it had been and made her way into the kitchen.
“Was it Papa?” Roland asked, beaming up at her from his seat.
“It was.” She nodded. “He misses you both and can’t wait to come home and give you a big hug.”
Rolands face lit up and he nodded before turning his attention back to his food. Regina sat back down next to him and finally tucked into her own plate of food.
“Are you excited to start school?” She asked Roland after a moment of silence.
“Yes! Snow said she is going to be the teacher for our class and Henry promised to bring me around on my first day."
He seemed genuinely excited. Regina had been nervous about him starting at first, he had grown up with the Merry Men in the Enchanted Forest and she was afraid he wouldn’t settle in easily. Robin had assured her Roland would be no different than any other child starting school for the first time and she could see now that he was right. Roland would just see it as another adventure.
"It sounds like you’re going to have so much fun.” She assured him placing her hand lightly on his arm.
Once they had finished dinner Regina put Robin into her crib and sent Roland to get ready for bed while she cleaned up downstairs. Wiping down Robins highchair she shook her head remembering Rolands laugh as he had watched his sister make the mess. She knew Robin would be just like Roland when she was older. She stacked the dirty plates and cutlery into the dishwasher - Who said this world didn’t have magic? - and moved to dish up a plate for Robin as the machine started. Wrapping up the food she tore a sheet out of the notepad on the table and wrote Robin’s name on it in neat and delicate letters. Quickly she made up a second plate and stuck a note to it with Zelena’s name written on it. She knew Zelena would come by to see Robin if she got the chance and she was sure they would both be hungry. She placed them both in the fridge and headed upstairs to check on Roland and Robin.
Regina could see a faint light spilling out from the room at the bottom of the hall. The room had been Roland’s since Robin moved in with Regina, he had seemed so excited at the idea of having a space that would finally be his own. She slowly pushed open the door and peered into the room. Roland was sitting on his bed already in his pyjamas with only his bedside light still turned on. He had a grey teddy bear in his arms, a monkey. It was one Regina had given him back in the Enchanted Forest.
“Are you ready to go to sleep?” She asked stepping into the room.
He shook his head. “Can you read me a story?”
“Of course I can. Let me go get your sister."
Roland settled himself back into bed as Regina went to get Robin from her room next door. When she came back into the room she pulled an old wooden chair over to the edge of Roland’s bed and placed Robin on it. Regina walked over to the bookshelf in the corner of the room and scanned her eyes over the books that packed the shelves. Most of them were vintage bound books Regina had collected over the years with some all too familiar titles. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk even the Brothers Grimm fairytales. A book finally caught her eye, one of the new ones on the shelves. The Tales of Robin Hood. The book that she had given to Robin as a gift a few years ago. He had taken it to New York with him when he left Storybrook but he had returned it to Regina afterwards, a note folded into the front cover with her name scribbled across it.
She slid the book off the shelf, flicked it open - the note still safely tucked inside - and walked back over to the chair. She picked up Robin and placed her in her lap, much like they had been sitting on the couch earlier that evening. Robin tucked herself right under Regina’s arm as she found the first page.
"Once upon a time.” She started.
Regina’s eyes slowly fluttered open, her mind barely aware of what was happening around her, to catch a glimpse of red hair falling down in front of her face. She shifted in place, her mind still fuzzy as she felt a weight being lifted from her lap. Her hand was empty now, the book had slipped from her fingers and was now lying on the ground next to her and keeping her eyes open was a struggle.
“Z'lena?” Regina murmured sensing someone moving behind her. She now realised it had been Zelena lifting Robin from her lap that had woken her. She must have fallen asleep reading to Robin and Roland.
“Sorry sis, I wanted to leave you but I think it’s time this one went back to her bed.” Zelena smiled placing a hand on Regina’s arm.
“Mhm of course.” She nodded trying to stretch out in hopes that it would help her wake up. She could feel her back crack as she did, she had hunched over in the chair and it was admittedly not the most comfortable place to fall asleep.
“And I think it’s time this one went to her bed too,” Robin whispered from behind her, though she wasn’t sure if it was for the benefit of not disturbing her further or the still sleeping Roland.
Regina felt him wrap his arms around her shoulders and place a kiss to the top of her head. She melted back into his arms and nodded letting her exhaustion hit and her eyes closed again. Robin shifted his arms, moving one to slip around her waist and he hooked the other one under her legs to sweep her up into his arms just as easily as she had lifted Baby Robin earlier.
“I can walk perfectly fine on my own.” Her protest was weak to her own ears, voice small and soft and half-muffled as she wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder.
“Oh, I know."
"I have a reputation to keep up in this town, I once had a reign of fear and terror.” She went on, her voice barely even a whisper now.
“You’re still that strong and fierce woman my Queen. Besides, there are no witnesses to this soft side of their terrifying Evil Queen.” He paused for a moment. “Apart from Zelena of course.”
“Oh, that’s even worse. If you even breathe so much as a word of this to Emma Swan or her dreadful mother Snow White I’ll have you back out in the woods with your Merry Men.”
Robin found it hard to take her threat seriously when he felt her breath even out against his skin and looked down to see her lying still in his arms. She was already asleep.

Skin to Skin: An Outlaw Queen Ficlet
Tumblr media
Summary: Regina volunteers at the NICU and melts when a baby is placed on her chest.
Based on an interview I watched, with a similar premise.
Also on AO3
Robin knew his wife very well. He loved his wife with all his heart. He knew that she had a rough exterior, but saw how it melted whenever she was around kids. In a minute she could go from yelling to someone on her cell phone, to cuddling a baby with all the love in the world. It’s why it broke his heart that they struggled so much to conceive. In the earlier days, he watched as she agonized over methods and temperatures, tracking her ovulation like a madwoman.
 After three years of trying, they turned to adoption. They were open to any form of it, but ultimately the birth parents that selected their profile chose to keep it closed. Regina and Robin never even met them. One day, they went to the hospital and got to meet their son, Henry. He became the best part of their worlds. Their hearts felt full, but they also knew they weren’t done.
 3 years later, they turned to surrogacy. It was something they had thought about and saved for, for quite a bit. Their good friend Marian volunteered to help them. She wanted no kids of her own, but could see how much they wanted to make Henry a big brother. With the support of her wife, she carried their second child. Roland came into the world and once again, their hearts were filled with delight. Marian and Mulan stayed in their lives, being the fun aunts to the boys that they had always dreamed of being.
 For 5 years, Robin and Regina were content with how things were. They chased their boys around, worked hard at their respective jobs and found time to make their marriage work. Robin thought occasionally about adding to their family, but he honestly wasn’t sure if it was the right move. Regina never mentioned it either. She loved their sons and would roll her eyes at the question “When are you going to try for a girl?”
“Why do we need a girl?” She would ask Robin later on. “Even if we did try again, we could end up with a boy.”
 And she was right. It wasn’t the gender of the child that would make their family complete. Still, he could tell that she wasn’t completely closed to the idea of adding to their family.
 Then Regina heard about a program at the hospital where people could volunteer to give skin to skin contact to babies in the NICU. Her step-sister Mary Margaret volunteered at Storybrooke General and had a pamphlet on the program. She explained that some of the infants didn’t have family members to do skin to skin with. The more Regina looked at it, the more appealing it seemed. Skin to skin had been the one way she had been able to bond with her babies after they were born. It allowed her to give them a connection that they didn’t have since they hadn’t grown inside of her. There had been studies on what a benefit skin to skin did for babies and it broke her hear to think that some didn’t have it.
 So, she signed herself up.
 “You’re going to come home with a baby,” Robin teased.
Regina rolled her eyes. “No, I’m not.”
************************************************************
Regina followed the nurse down the line of incubators, trying not to think about how small the babies were. Henry had been on the bigger side when he was born. One of those chubby babies with expressive eyes. Roland had been a normal weight, with lots of dark hair. She had seen preemies before, but not so many at once.
 The incubator they stopped at contained a baby of a relatively normal size, though she was much smaller than Henry or Roland had been. She had the standard hospital hat on her head and wore nothing but a diaper. The name card read “Margot”.
Regina settled into the rocking chair next to the incubator and unbuttoned the flannel top she had worn for the occasion. The nurse lifted Margot out of the incubator and placed her onto Regina’s chest. The sudden warm body against her chest caused a bit of a shock. Margot squirmed a bit and Regina placed her hand on the small of her back. She looked down at her shut eyes, letting out a tiny breath.
 She was in trouble.
 “How old is she?” She asked the nurse.
“3 weeks.”
“And she…”
“Ward of the state.”
 The nurse left Regina to cuddle the baby. She peaked up the hat to see wisps of strawberry blonde hair. She smiled a bit at that, wondering if it would stick or turn completely red when the baby was grown up. Or perhaps it’d revert to a darker blonde.
 “You are too cute,” Regina mumbled, patting the baby’s back. “I promised my husband I wasn’t going to bring a baby home.”
 Margot’s big blue eyes opened. Her tongue partially stuck out a bit, touching Regina’s bare skin.
 Regina sighed. “But I guess I wouldn’t be able to take you home just yet, so I wouldn’t have lied to him completely.”
**************
The next time Regina went to visit Margot, she brought Robin with her. He was doing his best not to say “I told you so”.
 He definitely didn’t say it after he held the little baby and fell in love with her.
 They talked about the logistics. They had donated all of their baby stuff to Mal and Ursula after they had theirs. The boys were both in elementary school. It’d be starting over, completely. They didn’t know Margot’s full story. It’d be starting completely over. Sleepless nights, dirty diapers, red tape and paperwork.
 Two days later, they went to see her again. The following, they called social services to talk about the procedure.
 Henry and Roland were ecstatic at the thought of a new baby sister. Regina and Robin tried to not get them too excited. There were still home studies to complete. They would have to foster her for a bit. Nothing would be finalized for quite awhile and there was a chance it would fall through.
 Margot came to live with the Locksley-Mills family when she was 3 months old. Regina’s office had been taken down and in its place was a pastel pink nursery. The boys fell in love with her as fast as Robin and Regina had, wanting to show her off to all of their friends. Roland didn’t quite get why she couldn’t play with him yet.
 It was two years of late nights, lullabies and unknowns. A social worker visiting constantly to make sure that Margot was in a stable home. Regina and Robin loved watching the little girl go through each and every milestone, but they couldn’t help but fear it might be the last. They had her for a long time, but they weren’t her adoptive parents yet. She could be taken from them at a moment’s notice.
 And then shortly after a fox themed birthday party, they got the call. Margot had her first (and hopefully only) court date. She was going to become an official Locksley-Mills.
 The court was filled with their friends, family and loved ones. Margot barely let Robin or Regina hold her as the judge tried to talk about the importance of found family, adoption and love. She just wanted to get down and play with the toys that she knew her mother had in her purse. Henry reached up and gave her one, to try to calm her down. Regina shot him a thankful smile.
 Finally, the judge said it. “I hereby announce that Robin Locksley and Regina Mills are the parents of this child, Margot Olivia.”
 Robin and Regina tearfully kissed each other, before planting one on either side of Margot’s cheeks. She finally managed to squirm out of her mother’s arms and dash to her purse to swipe some more toys. Regina let out a watery laugh, leaning into her husband.
 “Told you that you’d bring home a baby,” Robin whispered.
Regina shook her head. “Last time I don’t listen to you.”

Species/Race: human
Class/Specialization: mage/spirit healer/elemental
Height: 5’8
Gender/sexuality: bi/woman
Romance: Fenris
Characteristics/personality: Purple-leaning; charismatic, self-critical, sarcastic, fiercely protective, impulsive, reckless, story hungry, ambivert, optimistic, rambling talker, empathetic, physically affectionate, a worrier
Hair: short messy straight black hair
Eyes: blue
Distinguishing features: various scars, notably a long one across her back from when she fell from a tree when she was little; a few tattoos
Hobbies: gardening, exploring, finding stories, helping her friends, dancing
Brief Background: The family lived in Denerim, until Kitty was 7 years old and came into her magic. Worried about the templars discovering them, they moved further inland to just outside Lothering. There they worked the land and trained in secret, she learned to love gardening and growing things. Kitty was always closer to her father than her mother, following after him wherever he went. Hearing about his earlier adventures, Hawke was all set to see the world, but then tragedy struck when she was 20 years old, a day after her birthday, as her father died, suddenly. She got the nickname Kitty from Bethany and once they got to Kirkwall, she went by Hawke, because it hurt to hear the name.
Family: Malcolm Hawke (father-deceased 9:27 Dragon), Leandra Amell Hawke (mother – deceased 9:34 Dragon), Bethany Hawke (sister – deceased 9:30 Dragon), and Carver Hawke (Grey Warden), Gamlen Amell (uncle), Charade (cousin), Asher Amell (cousin). But let’s be real, the Kirkwall Crew is also her family. Later, she has two kids with Fenris, Mal and Diana.
Random Notes: Mabari named Babs (Babbler); talks with her hands; had to work hard for her magic, it didn’t come easy to here like it did Bethany; loves raspberries; bonded with a spirit of Hope; main love languages are physical touch and acts of service; infectious impish laugh; favorite season is Spring; lithe and leggy; always finds mischief

Tumblr media
Name: Garrett Lysander Hawke
Worldstate: Worldstate 3
Age: 24 in 9:31 (born on August 2nd, 9:07 Dragon)
Species/Race: human
Class/Specialization: mage/force mage/fire focus
Height: 6’4
Gender/sexuality: gay/man
Romance: Anders
Characteristics/personality: Blue-leaning; cheerful, optimistic, a puppy dog of a human being, reckless, a sweet man who can’t say no, naïve, trusting to a fault, extrovert; strangely insightful for someone who is seemingly clueless; hates conflict
Hair: black hair kept shaggy and a (sometimes) trimmed beard
Eyes: golden amber
Distinguishing features: many scars; strong nose and jaw
Hobbies: talking to people, helping people, baking, getting into trouble by accident, running
Brief Background: Naturally talented in magic, an overpowered force mage who can’t really do small magic. He is a happy-go-lucky guy with more wisdom than intelligence, his father or his siblings keeping him from being conned. He ended up in the protector role in his family less because he is a leader (he really isn’t), but because of his abilities. He wants to take care of everyone and make sure they are happy, whether they are family or friends. He volunteers to help people in the Alienage and in the clinic, though he usually lifts things or entertains kids, instead of using magic.
Family: Malcolm Hawke (father-deceased 9:27 Dragon), Leandra Amell Hawke (mother – deceased 9:34 Dragon), Bethany Hawke (sister – deceased 9:30 Dragon), and Carver Hawke (Grey Warden), Gamlen Amell (uncle), Charade (cousin), Asher Amell (cousin).

Hair: long blond hair, like her mother
Eyes: one amber, one blue
Distinguishing features: several tattoos, freckles across her face
Hobbies: drawing, tattooing, archery, collecting flowers, drinking
Brief Background: A sweet child, no one who knew her then would guess that she is the woman she is today. When the family had to move for the fourth time to Lothering, to avoid the notice of templars, Corva was 12 and angry at the Chantry for forcing them to this life. She grew angrier and more bitter as the years went on, after the death of her father, she got in a fist fight with a local templar, Carver stopped her from killing him.

Adventures in playing the Sims:
The house I built was way too small. I don’t mean the actual house, because it takes up most of the second largest lot available (I’m saving the biggest for Vincent and his family because I need to see Bryony go to college and team up for shenanigans with Cousin Alex) but the rooms everyone spends the most time in are ridiculously small in comparison. Super nice living room with a huge fireplace? Gigantic kitchen with an enormous island AND room for a dining room table? Second living room that’s basically a music/chess/lounge area? “Garage” that’s the relaxed rumpus room where the karaoke machine and dart board live? Kids rooms so big they can reasonably fit in future double beds and desks AND a streaming station since Marian is going to be a vlogger? Master suite roomy enough to fit a bed, end tables, dressers, a vanity, two chairs and a little table PLUS a bathroom complete with a tub, separate shower, and attached sauna?
No, let’s hang out in the 3x4 laundry room.
Rolfe has played with the dollhouse more than his own kids have.
He’s also the Wonder Parent who still clearly favors Marian, but also goes up every night to make the rounds, read bedtime stories, and tuck both kids in. He just goes to tuck Marian in first. Granted, he did put out his back roughhousing with Alex and he did teach him how to talk, but he also pretty much singlehandedly taught Marian all her toddler skills.
Cassandra got a job in the Detective branch and Alex is inconsolable when she leaves for work and comes running to her when she comes home. He has the Sad moodlet most of the day even though his dad is RIGHT THERE.
Molly the Cat is winning the Parent of the Year award by sticking by the kids when Rolfe passes out on the expansive kitchen floor in the middle of microwaving chicken nuggets for his children because he can’t take care of his own damn needs and I’m not going to micromanage.
No one has set the kitchen on fire yet. The grill, on the other hand...Cassandra just wanted to make grilled chicken, not chicken flambé.
Rolfe did electrocute himself trying to upgrade the roomba. I’ve seen Molly sit on top of it a grand total of ZERO times.
I got tired of dealing with toddlers, so used cheats to top off whatever skill level they were at and aged them up to children. I did age Marian up first since she’s technically older, so Alex got more time with Dad while Marian was at school some extra toddler skill learning time that let him age up with the Genius trait.
Marian beelined to the dart board as soon as she could. She kicked her dad’s ass at darts 3-0 too. Rolfe was so proud.
Alex aged up a few days later and went straight to the piano. Rolfe ran over and started mentoring him, so here’s hoping they get more bonding time. He’s still Cassandra’s little guy and they snuggle on the sofa all the time, which is so damn adorable, and Rolfe actually touched the karaoke machine for the first time so he and Marian could sing a duet.
Alex is making sure he stays the baby of the family. I heard giggling in the living room and tuned in to see Rolfe inviting Cassandra upstairs to get frisky in the sauna when Alex started to follow with “talk to mom” in his queue. Son, no. Go hang out downstairs with your sister.
Proof that Rolfe’s the Cool Parent:
