#the 8th pilot a Nelson

Note
So... Lancer × The Locked Tomb... I like the idea of Griddle being a Balor pilot and Harry piloting a Lich. What about you?
Hey hello, thank you for the question. Also sorry for all the Lancer to my tlt mutuals, it will happen again. Harrow has to pilot a lich, even if just by vibes alone.
I don't know about Gideon in a balor, what was your reasoning? The heiress of the minor house of a remote karrakin barony planet has to appear for a contest with other house heirs, despite being her enemy she needs to bring the prodigy blackbeard pilot, famous for pushing recklessly ahead and engaging in brutal melee ignoring the exposed reactor. When the contest is announced Harrow disappears into dark corners and goes on searches in obscure omninet spaces and comes back in a forbidden mech of ancient lore.
But also, consider: Harrow, mercenary contracted operative stranded on a destroyed ship, modifying the mech of her girlfriend who just died to get harrow here safe, and coming out crying and punching the pirates who did it to oblivion
Or a brand of mechs with NHPs who call themselves necromancers bonded to their cavaliers, and fight as a tandem, the cavalier shooting and moving and the NHP hacking enemies and protecting their mech

Deniz Melissa Benetton
Tumblr media
Rocco Benetton is the son of Luciano Benetton, one of the four founders of the Italian fashion brand Benetton. He met Bahar Boyner, the sister of Boyner Holding's founder, their distributors in Türkiye, in 1995. They got married in 1998, and in 1999, their daughter Deniz Melissa Benetton was born.
Deniz spent half of her childhood in Italy and the other half in Türkiye. The excitement of Formula races in Italy and his father's F1 background drew her into the sport, and at a young age, she developed an interest in it. Deniz participated in regional karting races and achieved unexpected success. In 2015, she joined the Ferrari Academy, where she won 1 Formula3 and 1 Formula2 championships. In 2018, she took his first step into Formula 1 by becoming a test pilot for Ferrari. In 2019, she filled Kimi Räikkönen's vacant seat and finished her first season in Formula 1 in 10th place. In the 2020 season, she had a victory in Canada and finished the season as 8th. In 2021, she moved to McLaren and ended the season in 5th place with 2 victories. In the 2022 season, she finished 6th. At 2023 season, she moved to Mercedes, she is currently racing for this ream.
Deniz considers Türkiye as her second home. She is native at Turkish and Italian, fluent in French, and English, and she speaks German and Spanish midly . Also she tries to learn Russian and Japanese.
Thanks to her achievements in the lower category series and her family's business, she didn't face many difficulties in finding sponsorships. As the only female driver on the grid, she receives both strong support and negative reactions from different groups. She responds to the sexist questions with a sharp tongue, and during these moments, her friends like Vettel and Hamilton also defend her, and she appreciates these moments.
Being the only female driver on the grid, Deniz is featured in more programs on SkySports and the F1 YouTube channel compared to others. She is close friends with Lando Norris, and she tries to get along with everyone on the grid, admiring Vettel and Räikkönen. She feels happiest and pushes herself the most during races in Italy and Türkiye. When she won in Türkiye in 2021, she couldn't hold back tears of joy.
Deniz is known for being sarcastic. When she first appeared in front of the cameras, she was perceived as insincere and faced criticism, but over time, she got used to being in front of the cameras and felt more comfortable as she established a genuine connection with the people around her, leading to more positive feedback. Of course, there are still some misogynistic detractors, but there is also an army of supporters fighting for her on the internet.
Above all, she is a nerd, geek, and fangirl. She knows even the smallest details about various subjects, from superheroes to Eurovision history, from old Hollywood sci-fi movies to astronomy. Sailor knots, morse code, origami, sign language... She doesn't stop until learn everything about a subject she interested to. If she doesn't wear F1 merchandise, she's probably wearing Star Wars or Marvel merchandise because her wardrobe consists mainly of that. After learning to read and write, she researched F1 history and documented every significant event in an old notebook. She has an extensive F1 almanac that starts from the first race in 1950 and covers scandals like Spygate and Crashgate, as well as details like Nelson Piquet's race rankings in different races and the rules that applied in different years. She was also successful at school lessons until she fully concerned to F1. She thinks about studying astrophysics after her retirement from F1. Also she writes various fanfictions on Tumblr and AO3, but her account is unknown.
Her favorite sport after F1 is swimming. While she's swimming, she doesn't think about anything else. There's nothing better for her to clear her mind and relax before and after races.
She actually loves Turkish cuisine more than Italian cuisine. She spent all her summer holidays in Turkey during her childhood and holds a deep affection for the country. She shares celebration messages for national and Islamic holidays on social media.
Sometimes, she sees videos that edited in a romantic way about her  and other pilots. And although she was embarrassed by them at first, she no longer cares. She maintains a professional attitude towards her work. (No one knows that she constantly listens to War of Hearts by Ruelle and thinks about Mick Schumacher.) Her closest friends on the grid are Lando, Carlos, Charles, and Mick. She spends most of her time with them during events and F1 media department chooses her with mostly these 4  to make content.
She is a huge fan of literally every driver that she watched at her childhood; Vettel, Raikönnen, Schumacher, Button, Webber, Rosberg, Alonso... She thinks that she is the luckiest person because she was reserved pilot at Ferrari while Vettel and Raikönnen racing. She had biggest crush on Sebastian and Jenson when she was a child. In 2019, while playing an ask game, Seb asked her who was her childhood crush is. She immediately blushed and started laughing while throwing hinting looks at Seb, after he understand, he started laughing too and said that it was cute. She covered her face with her hands and stand up by saying that she needs to find someone to hit her with a car. And everyone knows about her crush on Jenson because she revealed this in her very first interview made by Jenson Button's himself.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc are like brothers to Deniz. She loves spending time with them. Charles is always so kind to her, and a photo of her sleeping on Carlos' shoulder after FIA's prize night is wandering around the internet.
Mick Schumacher and Deniz know each other since they were babies. She found a photo of them with pacifiers in their mouths, for Netflix show producers from their infancy. She posted the photo on Instagram and got a response from Mick, another babyhood photo. They didn't grow up together, just 2 people who knew each other but lived far away. After the accident of Michael Schumacher, they made a phone call, did not speak, just cried loudly. They met at some karting races and had a little chat while their mothers taking photos. Years passed without intimate acquaintance until they met again at the F1 paddock. Mick's kindness and endless radiance of sunlight drew her in immediately as it evoked some warm childhood memories. She tries very hard to keep things professional. But some fans on the internet are catching how she acts different and timid around him. How she blushes and laughs awkward-long after she making him laugh. No, she should keep things professional.
She started a campaign to get women's attention to motorsports with Susie Wolff. Also, she attends to some activities for protecting environment. She posts some campaigns and news about global warming at social media. After his retirement, she started supporting Sebastian Vettel's bee campaign. She also fights for homophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, sexual discrimination, racism, animal rights... She just tries to make the world a better place.

LUCY & BEDROCK! (TWIST! TWIST!)
Lucille Ball & “The Flintstones”
Tumblr media
“The Flintstones” was TV’s first primetime animated sitcom. It was produced by Hannah-Barbara animation and ran on ABC TV from 1960 to 1966. Following the show's cancellation, a film called The Man Called Flintstone, a musical spy caper that parodied James Bond, was released that same year. The show was revived in the early 1970s and several different series and made-for-TV movies. The original show also was adapted into a live-action film in 1994, and a prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, which followed in 2000.
Tumblr media
Although not officially recognized by its creators, the show bears a very strong resemblance to TV’s “The Honeymooners”.  Fred and Wilma Flintstone are reminiscent of Ralph and Alice Kramden, and they have best friends and neighbors Betty and Barney Rubble that are very similar to Ed and Trixie Norton.  The original “Honeymooners” (1955-56) also was spun-off into future iterations, including musical episodes, just like “The Flintstones.”
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball admired “Honeymooners” creator and Jackie Gleason and Gleason even played Ralph Kramden on “Here’s Lucy.”  Ball also worked with the show’s other stars: Art Carney (in “Happy Anniversary and Goodbye” and “What Now Catherine Curtis”), Audrey Meadows (in “Mother of the Bride” on “Life With Lucy”) and even Jane Kean, who played Trixie in the color “Honeymooners” (who was seen on a 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show”).
CAST CONNECTIONS
Tumblr media
Jean Vander Pyl (Wilma Flintstone / Pebbles) worked with Lucille Ball on several episodes of “My Favorite Husband” radio show in 1948.
Tumblr media
Alan Reed (Fred Flintstone) played a train station luncheon counter attendant in “Lucy Visits The White House” (TLS S1;E23) in 1963, while also playing Fred Flintstone on ABC.  He later appeared on an episode of Desi Arnaz’s “Mothers-in-Law”.
Tumblr media
Bea Benadaret (Betty Rubble) was one of Lucille Ball’s favorite performers. She played Iris Atterbury on “My Favorite Husband” and was Ball’s first choice to play Ethel Mertz.  Instead, she played Miss Lewis in “Lucy Plays Cupid” (ILL S1;E15).
Tumblr media
Mel Blanc (Barney Rubble) was a master of voices best known for Bugs Bunny. He also worked extensively with Jack Benny, once with Lucille Ball. He did two films with Lucille Ball: The Fuller Brush Girl (1950) and G.I. Journal (1944).  In 1969, Blanc did some ADR (dialogue replacement) work on “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Hal Smith (Various Voices) is probably best known as Otis the Drunk on “The Andy Griffith Show”. He appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1963 film Critic’s Choice and did three episodes of “The Lucy Show” and one of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Howard Morris (Various Voices) played Howard Coe in “Lucy and the Golden Greek” (TLS S4;E2) in 1965.
Tumblr media
Allan Melvin (Various Voices) is best remembered as Sam the Butcher on “The Brady Bunch” and Barney Hefner on “All in the Family.” In 1956, as Corporal Henshaw on “Sergeant Bilko,” he did was seen with Ball in “Bilko’s Ape Man.” Melvin and Ball also appeared together on the 8th Anniversary of “The Ed Sullivan Show” In 1954.
Tumblr media
Harvey Korman (The Great Gazzoo / Various Voices) is best remembered for his work with Carol Burnett on “The Carol Burnett Show”, several times with Lucille Ball. He also appeared on “The Lucy Show” three times.
Tumblr media
Janet Waldo (Mrs. Slaghoople / Hedda Rocker / Various Voices) is best remembered for voicing Judy Jetson on another Hanna-Barbera cartoon series, “The Jetsons” (1962-87). She played Peggy “Keep Jiggling” Dawson on “I Love Lucy” and Lucy Carmichael’s sister Marge on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Frank Nelson (Rockbind / Rocky Stone / Various Clerks) did two recurring characters on “I Love Lucy” - Freddie Fiillmore and Ralph Ramsey, in addition to other characters. His distinctive voice was heard on “My Favorite Husband” and he made one appearance, as the harried train conductor, on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
June Foray (Granny / Nurses) was one of the most famous voice artists in Hollywood, most famous for Rocket J. Squirrel. Coincidentally, Warner Brothers recruited Foray to replace Bea Benadaret as Granny in their cartoons. On “I Love Lucy” she provided the bark of Fred the dog.
Tumblr media
Paula Winslowe (Mrs. Slate / Various Voices) played Mrs. Martha Conklin on “Our Miss Brooks” opposite Gale Gordon. On “I Love Lucy” she was one of the passengers on the S.S. Constitution in “Second Honeymoon” (ILL S5;E14) and a patient (in wheelchair, above) in “Lucy Plays Florence Nightingale” (TLS S2;E14). She was the voice of Bambi’s mother in the 1942 Disney film Bambi.
Tumblr media
Verna Felton (Pearl Slaghoople) received two Emmy nominations for her role in the Desilu series “December Bride,” playing Hilda Crocker from 1955 to 1959. She did two episodes of “I Love Lucy,” including playing Lucy’s stern maid, Mrs. Porter. Felton voiced many characters for Disney.
Tumblr media
Howard McNear (Doctor) played Mr. Crawford, Little Ricky’s music teacher on “I Love Lucy.” McNear went on to play Floyd the Barber on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1961 to 1967, filmed on the Desilu backlot. He was also seen in Lucy and Desi’s 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer.
Tumblr media
Herb Vigran (Cop) was one of the busiest character actors in Hollywood. He played Jule, Ricky Ricardo’s music agent on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” in addition to playing movie publicist Hal Sparks in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;23). He was seen in the Lucy-Desi film The Long, Long Trailer and six episodes of “The Lucy Show” - all as doctors!
Tumblr media
Ginny Tyler (Daisy) voiced Clementine the sheep in “Lucy Buys a Sheep” (TLS S1;E5) and the bird voices in “Lucy Gets the Bird” (TLS S3;E12) and one episode of “Here’s Lucy.”  She did the voice of the sheep in Disney’s 1964 hit Mary Poppins. Although she died in 2012, her voice can still be heard in the chorus of birds outside The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Tumblr media
Willard Waterman (Gus Gravel) was a versatile voice actor who appeared on hundreds of radio shows in the 1930s and 40s. He is probably best remembered for playing “The Great Gildersleeve” on both radio and TV.  He was seen on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and The Plumber” (above) and “Lucy the Rain Goddess” (S4;E15).
Tumblr media
Jerry Hausner (Clyde) was best remembered for playing Jerry, Ricky’s agent on “I Love Lucy” (including the pilot). He also did one appearance on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Sam Edwards (Agent) played the star-struck bellboy in “Lucy Meets the Queen” (ILL S5;E15). He was also the voice of the adult Thumper in Bambi (1942).
Tumblr media
Sandra Gould (Various Voices) was best remembered as Gladys Kravitz on “Bewitched”.  She made two appearances on “I Love Lucy” and one (above) on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Ann-Margret (Ann Margrock) was one of several celebrity guest stars to be honored with character on “The Flintstones”. She was also a guest star (as herself) on “Here’s Lucy” in 1970 and had appeared on Ann-Margret’s 1969 special.
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Taylor (Pearl Slaghoople in The Flintstones live action film, 1994) was one of Hollywood’s most glamorous and popular stars when she guest starred with husband Richard Burton on “Here’s Lucy” in 1970.  It is odd, then, that she was cast as Pearl Slaghoople, a character that was previously considered frumpy.
Tumblr media
Paul Winchell (Umpire / Thief / Reporter in "Wind Up Wilma” - 1981) was best known as a ventriloquist, but he was also an accomplished character actor who appeared in two episodes of “The Lucy Show” and two of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
Arte Johnson (”Flintstone Kids” - 1989) was best known as a cast member on “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”.  He also did an episode of “Here’s Lucy” as an eccentric bird watcher.
Tumblr media
George O’Hanlon (”Flintstone Kids” - 1989) was best remembered as the voice of George Jetson on “The Jetsons,” another hit Hanna-Barbera cartoon. On “I Love Lucy” he was one of two actors to play Charlie Appleby.
"I Love Lucy” and “The Flintstones”
Tumblr media
First, Lucille Ball bears more than a passing physical resemblance to Wilma Flintstone. In “The Flintstones” it is clear that Fred is the leading character and most stories revolve around Fred and Barney, rather than Lucy and Ethel. The tried and true formula of a leading couple and the best friends / neighbors as the secondary characters is used in “I Love Lucy”, “The Honeymooners” and “The Flintstones”.
Here are a few more tangible connections:
Tumblr media
The animated Lucy and Desi that opened pre-syndication airings of “I Love Lucy” were created by the Hanna-Barbera unit at MGM.
Tumblr media
And both shows were sponsored by cigarette companies; “I Love Lucy” by Philip Morris and “The Flintstones” by Winston.
Tumblr media
Wilma and Betty trying to sneak into the Water Buffalo convention in "Ladies Night at the Lodge" (1964) while disguised as men was very close to Lucy and Ethel disguising themselves as male reporters to infiltrate Ricky’s daddy shower in “Ricky Has Labor Pains” (1953).
Tumblr media
The plot of “Operation Switchover” (1964) recycles the premise and many of the same plot elements of “Job Switching” (1952) especially with the domestic disasters on Ricky and Fred's end: scorched clothes while ironing, a fallen cake, and overflowing rice on the stove.
Tumblr media
Like Lucy Ricardo, Wilma Flintstone’s pregnancy was incorporated into the storyline. It was originally thought that like Lucy, Wilma would have a boy, but merchandisers pointed out that there were more opportunities for products for girls, so Pebbles was born. Like Lucille Ball, Jean Vander Pyl (who voiced Wilma) was pregnant at the time of recording and gave birth to her son on the day "The Blessed Event" originally aired on February 22, 1963.
Fred and Barney undertake a rehearsal for the big moment, including Betty rehearsing telephoning the doctor, just like Ricky and the Mertz’s do for Lucy when ‘the time has come’.
Wilma seems to get cravings for unusual foods including hot fudge and sardines that Fred dutifully supplies, just like Ricky did for Lucy.
In the father’s waiting room, a man worries his wife might deliver more than one baby, just like Mr. Stanley (Charles Lane) on “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
In “Operation Switchover” a character named Hedda Rocker from Good Cavekeeping Magazine is obviously inspired by Hedda Hopper, the famous gossip columnist who appeared on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” as herself.
Tumblr media
Arthur Murray, who’s innovate dance instruction method and dance studios became iconic, is parodied on “The Flintstones” as Arthur Quarry.  In a 1965 episode, he was named Arthury Murrayrock.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Meets the Mustache” (LDCH S3;E3) Lucy wants to open a sealed letter so she tries a inserting a knitting needle under the flap, a method she says she saw in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. The scene is underscored with “Funeral March of a Marionette” by Charles Gounod, which served as the theme tune of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”. On “The Flintstones” he is parodied as Alvin Brickrock.
Tumblr media
Hollyrock star Rock Quarry is a tribute to Rock Hudson, but talks like Gary Cooper.  Hudson guest-starred on an episode of “I Love Lucy” set in Palm Springs. Previously, Lucy dressed as Gary Cooper (complete with his trademark ‘yup’) to fool near-sighted Caroline Appleby.
Tumblr media
An episode titled “The Soft Touchables” is modeled after Desilu’s hit gangster series “The Untouchables.” “The Lucy Show” parodied their own show in an episode titled “Lucy The Gun Moll” (TLS S4;E25) in 1966 starring “The Untouchables Cast” but using different character names.
Tumblr media
Wilma and Betty’s favorite television show “Peek-A-Boo Camera” catches Fred and Barney acting silly in a 1963 episode that is clearly modeled after TV’s “Candid Camera” created by Allen Funt. In 1971, “Lucy and the Candid Camera” (HL S4;E14) also featured Funt in hidden camera shot plot. Lucy Carmichael also get involved in a hidden camera television show in “Lucy and the Beauty Doctor” (TLS S3;E24).  In that show, the program was called “The Boiling Point.”
Tumblr media
The hit Broadway and movie musical movie My Fair Lady inspired many satires (some in name only) including “My Fair Freddy” (1966) and “My Fair Lucy” (TLS S3;E20) in 1965!
Tumblr media
In “Fred Flintstone Woos Again” (1961) Wilma convinces Fred to renew their wedding vows after realizing the official who originally married them wasn’t fully licensed!  On “I Love Lucy” Lucy realized that their wedding was also invalid when she found an error on their license. They go to the spot they first wed to renew their vows, just like “The Flintstones”.
Tumblr media
In “Dial ‘S’ for Suspicion” (1962) Wilma's devotion to a murder mystery novel causes Fred to wonder if Wilma is trying to away with him. In “Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying To Do Away With Her” (ILL S1;E4) Lucy's devotion to a murder mystery novel causes her to wonder if Ricky is trying to do away with her!
Tumblr media
When Wilma can’t keep up with the housework, she hires a maid in “Wilma the Maid” (1963). The same situation happened in the Ricardo home in “Lucy Hires a Maid” (ILL S2;E23). While the Flintstone’s maid is an earthy Italian woman named Rockabrigida, the Ricardo’s maid is a humorless woman named Mrs. Porter. Coincidentally, Mrs. Porter was played by Verna Felton, who voices Pearl Slaghoople on “The Flintstones”.
Tumblr media
When superhero “Superstone” is hired for a birthday party but can’t make it - Fred takes his place. On “I Love Lucy” when Superman is promised for Little Ricky’s party, but can’t make it, Lucy takes his place - nearly!
Tumblr media
In “How To Pick A Fight With Your Wife” (1966) spats between spouses escalate to such a degree that the couples split: Fred and Barney are thrown together as roommates, while Wilma and Betty are bunking together at the other house. In “Vacation from Marriage” (ILL S2;E6) much the same thing occurs between the Ricardos and the Mertzes!
Tumblr media
The real comparison with Lucy and Desi is something Joe Barbera could have only hoped for in 1960 — enduring popularity. Lucy is still justifiably loved by hoards of fans and “I Love Lucy” is on the air somewhere. “The Flintstones” remains a part of the popular culture, 60 years after the show’s debut.

Fourth paragraph of the second piece of a new WIP
The world changed a lot. New machines, new foods, new inventions. He watched humans reach out to the moon, to other planets. They created machines to fly through space on their behalf. Just how many secrets did they learn about their star, the sun. Did they know her real name?
Seventh paragraph from the first chapter of a new AU (plus the 8th for a bit more context)
“Maybe?” Zane said. “Please do not forget why we did this in the first place.”
“Hey.” Canny’s tone was firm. “I have a right to do as I please. I’m not a damn tool. You can’t stand me piloting this train then maybe you shouldn’t have given me the reins.”
Majora’s Mask AU wasn’t giving me anything good so I counted backwards from a scene cut (and once again tacked on some extra for context (I write very small paragraphs a lot))
“Uh?” Lloyd frowned. “Help you how?”
“I don’t know, somehow. You’re the only one who can see me. We have to get my dad back so he can help Nelson. We have to get my powers back so we can save the town. We have to destroy whatever it is that’s freezing everything.” The ghost clutched his head again and screamed.

#Repost @deptvetaffairs • • • • • • Kristoffer “Kris” Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas, in June 1936. In his youth, Kristofferson showed a fondness for country music and a talent for writing, penning his first song at age 11. After graduating high school, he attended Pomona College in California. At Pomona, Kristofferson studied poetry and literature, winning awards for his writing and working as an editor for the school newspaper. He graduated from Pomona in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in creative writing. He then went on to attend the University of Oxford in England as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a master’s degree in English literature in 1960. Kristofferson came from a military family. His father was a major general in the Air Force. After college, his parents encouraged him to join. He joined the Army in 1960, training as a helicopter pilot at Fort Rucker in Alabama and later completing Ranger School. In the early 1960s, Kristofferson received his commission and served with the 8th Infantry Division in West Germany. But Kristofferson never lost his love for writing and music. While in Germany, he continued to practice his songwriting and performed with a band of fellow soldiers. After he completed his tour of duty in Germany, and spending two weeks on leave immersed in the country music scene in Nashville, Tennessee, Kristofferson chose to follow his passion and resigned from the Army in 1965. He gave a demo tape to superstar musician Johnny Cash in 1969, but Cash ignored it. Undeterred, Kristofferson responded by landing a helicopter on Cash’s front lawn. That got Cash’s attention. Cash agreed to record one of Kristofferson’s songs, kickstarting a career as a singer and songwriter that would last for decades. Artists who have recorded Kristofferson’s lyrics include Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Isaac Hayes, Bob Dylan and others. Kristofferson would win three Grammy awards for his music during the 1970s, as well as a lifetime achievement award in 2014. He also found fame as an actor, appearing in over 100 film and television roles. Kristofferson retired in 2020, ending a career that spanned more than half a century. Purple Passions & Proclivities
Gender Assignment Guest Blogger, Felicia Holman
Tumblr media
Dedicated to the memories of Betty Holman & Prince Rogers Nelson (and to the future of Kendyl Holman)
“Sex isn’t all I think about, it’s all I think about U.”--’Shhh (Break It Down)’, Prince Rogers Nelson
An Origin Story
First, big thanks to Melissa Potter for inviting me to be a guest blogger for Gender Assignment. I am writing this essay (my first of four) on April 21, 2018---the second anniversary of the sudden death of my artistic and sexual muse, Prince Rogers Nelson. Today, I’m simultaneously elated and bereft; elated to be writing, bereft of both my Purple dearly beloved and the person who got me into him in the first place: My mother, Betty.
Tumblr media
My mother, Betty / She was seeing me off on my first international flight...to Jamaica. This was '96 so she was actually with me at the boarding gate, even though I was traveling solo!
This month also marks the 10th anniversary of my mother's memorial service. As a single Black mother raising and homeschooling 2 kids on Chicago's Southside in the 1980’s, Mom was pretty unconventional. She was a working-class artist/ public intellectual/ entrepreneur/ urban gardener/ Columbia College film student/ championship-winning boys’ Little League coach/ etc... I’ll never forget how she championed my auditioning for the male lead in my 8th grade play because the female lead was too wispy (though I was ultimately cast as the female lead). Though strictly heteronormative in her own gender and sexual expression, Mom was sex-positive. She was my primary sex ed teacher and feminine wiles coach. *For Christmas during my freshman year in high school, Mom bought me my first lacy lingerie set; explaining “this is the type of underwear a young lady buys.”* Mom was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and as a result, devoutly nurtured her only daughter's sexual agency and empowerment. One of her no-nonsense metaphor resonates to this day: “You don't need anyone else to scratch your own itch!” *Which I knew to be true, ever since I’d learned how to covertly rub one out on the edge of my chair in Kindergarten.*
Erotic City, Come Alive
In a two-fold effort to break me out of my bubble gum “Michael Jackson phase” & put me on to something more subversive and avant-garde, Mom formally introduced me to Prince when she brought home the 12” 1999 double album and explained to me that Prince played all the instruments. However, it was actually the combination of seeing the Little Red Corvette video and then learning that he and I share the same birthday that cemented him as #foreverinmylife...Whereas Prince was contraband in the homes of most of my Gen X peers, those of us with “cool" parents /guardians were exposed to the crucially impactful carnal knowledge of His Purple Majesty during our tweens. *I’ve often described Prince’s cultural impact & influence as a result of his artistry grabbing us by the root and crown chakras (as his lyrics on ‘Sexuality’ clearly illustrate)!* “Little Girl Heat" (LGH) is a term I coined a few years ago during a generative rehearsal with Honey Pot Performance. I find LGH succinctly / viscerally encapsulates the phenomenon of tingling sensations and rise in core temperature I’d feel while listening to Automatic, Let’s Pretend We’re Married, Lady Cab Driver, etc. To this day, I still experience LGH when I’m overcome with desire...trust & BELIEVE!
Here & Now
As a grown-ass-woman-for-real, I am both looking back and ahead at my sexcapades. Sex has always been a ‘Quality (v. Quantity) of Life’ issue for me, but even more so for me in recent years...more on that in future posts. The candid memoirs of living legends Diahann Carroll, Grace Jones and Jenifer Lewis line my shelves as both salve and motivation. *Can’t WAIT for fellow Gen X-er Tracee Ellis Ross to grace us with hers!* Though I’m not a mom, I am a doting auntie who is determined to give my 8 y.o. niece (Kendyl) the gifts of real talk and agency that her paternal grandmother gave to me. Conversations with my niece have recently begun to include her questions about puberty as well as my ‘leading’ questions to find out what she does/doesn't already know. I find that sex ed resources tailor-made for little Black girls are still few and far between in this post-Obama 21st century, so my anecdotes and advice will be some of her primary resources. She knows that Prince is my favorite musician/entertainer/artist and that I wear a tribute button everyday since he passed. But I haven't formally introduced her to Prince music yet. I think his 2006 Golden Globe award-winning Song of the Heart (from the animated film ‘Happy Feet’) will be our entry point...it’s still years before her time.

Five Books to Read This Summer
I often get asked for book recommendations. Especially around summer time. So I thought I’d put this list together as a place to start if you’re looking for some books to take to the beach. Books that are perfect for reading with a cold Corona in hand and waves lapping at your feet. Enjoy.
Cuba Straits - Randy Wayne White
The 22nd book in the Doc Ford series. But don’t worry if you haven’t read any of the others in the series (though I highly recommend them). This book features baseball, Cuba, Russian assassins, fast boats, murderous Santeros, and a little bit of history. What more could you want?
A Salty Piece of Land - Jimmy Buffett
Jimmy’s 2004 novel about Tully Mars. “From a lovely sunset sail in Punta Margarita to a wild spring-break foam party in San Pedro, Tully encounters an assortment of treasure hunters, rock stars, sailors, seaplane pilots, pirates, and even a ghost or two.”
White Knight - John Cunningham
The 8th book in the fun Buck Reilly series. Buck lives at the La Concha hotel in Key West but this adventure is set in the Virgin Islands. Perfect fun, exciting book to get lost in at the beach.
The Cuban Affair - Nelson DeMille
This book is just fun. Especially if you are interested in Cuba as much as I am. “This “action-packed, relentlessly paced thriller” featuring US Army combat veteran Daniel “Mac” MacCormick, now a charter boat captain, who is about to set sail on his most dangerous cruise.”
Pirate Hunters - Robert Kurson
The only non fiction book on the list but just as exciting as the others. Treasure, obsession, and the search for a legendary pirate ship. “A thrilling adventure of danger and deep-sea diving, historic mystery and suspense.”
