I just can't get enough it seems, time to start the next Baki the Grappler book!

It seems that this one will take on the saga i saw on the anime (at least by the end) so that's exciting

Chapter 1

Notable Mounts He has various vehicles and machines he likes to fuss over and drive around, but he’s particularly fond of his SDS Fenrir.

In addition to his chocobo—a particularly stubborn beast named Doreen—he’s also fond of his battlesheep, Doctor One and a colossal crab he’s dubbed St. Barnabus.

Notable Minion/s Besides Doctor One and St. Barnabas, Evander is especially fond of various clockworks, automata, wind-ups and models that he’s put together. His favorite is a drone modeled after a Magitek bit that he’s named Valencia.

A pendant in the shape of a swan, a few too many flasks

Chronic Illnesses or Disabilities Evander lives with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I’ve written about it a few places, most notably at length here and in brief here. How do they deal with these? Depends on the day, really. This isn’t really a thing he has a name for, so it’s not a thing he can easily address. He’s got a sloppily slapped together set coping mechanisms that work about half the time, if he’s lucky. Other than that, he mostly hopes for good days full of things he can convince himself he’s interested in.

Education Level He likes it when people underestimate him, so he’s not always quick to admit to the formal Ishgardian education afforded to him by the family that took him in when he left Limsa Lominsa. He’ll often try to pass it off as eclectic, self-driven studies... Which, admittedly, also played a big part in shaping him.

Habits There’s a lot of excess in his life. He drinks too much. He eats too much. He stays up too late, too long, and then sleeps too late, too long. He’s almost always got a flask or four on his person, and he often finds that he’s picking up the dinner or drink tab wherever he goes.

Other Nothing immediately springs to mind, but I’m sure there’s like a dozen things I should put here. This thing has been sitting in my drafts for god-knows-how-long, so I’m just glad to finally get it out there.

Kiwoo was lying in bed while you were changing Geon’s clothes and putting on diapers. Miga and Sunoh are still in kindergarten and so you had enough time for the babies. Cujo was next to you all the time and kept running up and down to keep an eye on both babies. His instinct for protecting babies was great. It started with Sunoh, but he was still very young himself. But he never took his eyes off the twins. He sniffed them shortly after birth and immediately put his head between them. Since then he has never let them out of his sight. He kept lying to them, when they cried he got nervous. Cujo was really a good dog, loved the children and was very patient. But Miga in particular had a good grip on him. Since she found him, they have had a special bond. While you dress Geon, Cujo licks his little hands. It was really cute because he took care of the twins in his own way. "Are the babies ready?" You had your first appointment with the pediatrician today but it always took a little while until you could start with the two boys. "Yes, Kiwoo is already dressed and Geon is almost done." You smile and see Jaehyun get into bed to pick up Kiwoo. But at that moment you hear a sound that makes you sigh. "I think he's pooped again." Jaehyun laughed and looked at the boy. "Noooo, I just changed his diapers 10 minutes ago." You sighed and were desperate. Getting away with the two sometimes seemed impossible.

After your visit by the pediatrician, you were relieved that the boys were healthy. They were the perfect size and weight. But while they were a bit smaller than Sunoh was, you were a little bit worried. But the pediatrician confirmed that Sunoh is especially tall for a baby and child. After visiting the doctor, you had to breastfeed the babies again. They were always hungry and so were you. Breastfeeding two twins was more intense for your body than feeding just one baby at the time. Jaehyun drove past McDonalds and bought you some burgers and fries, then drove to a secluded parking lot with a look at the Han River. While breastfeeding baby one, Jaehyun fed you with fries. "Unbelievable how much you can eat right now." Jaehyun laughed and shoved the next fries into your mouth. "Hey, I'm producing milk for two children who are quite hungry." You laugh and look down at Kiwoo. "Jaehyun?" After you have changed babies and are now starting to breastfeed Geon, you address a little uncomfortable topic. "Hmmm?" His eyes turned to you as he placed Kiwoo over his shoulders and waited for him to burp. "I know it will be a while before things get normal in bed between us. But we should start thinking about how to use contraception." You had thought about it a bit before you the birth. After the miscarriage and the birth of the twins, your body is tired and you think that your body will not be able to do more. "Aren't you going to take the IUD again?" Jaehyun gently patted his son's back. "I was thinking about you doing a vasectomy." The words are difficult for you and you hope that his reaction is not too severe. "WHAT?" Jaehyun got loud and Kiwoo started to cry. He then put him in his arms and rocked him, so that he immediately came to rest. "I mean, you don't want children anymore, and then we could ... well you know anyway ... without fear that I'm going to get pregnant again..." You knew that Jaehyun would not respond so happily to this subject. "But a vasectomy?" Jaehyun got sick at the thought of someone cut something down there. "When I took the contraceptive pill, I became pregnant twice. The IUD slipped also out. And the vasectomy is not a big operation." You were desperate, you no longer wanted to use complicated contraceptives. "But what if we still want a baby?" Jaehyun looked at his son and he became very soft. "You were the one who didn't want more children after Sunoh." "And you wanted a big family." The discussion no longer made sense to you. He should only think about it once. "Okay okay. But I just ask you to take a look at everything. Sleep over it. We have at least 7 weeks to go and ..." "Ughh seven weeks?" Interrupted Jaehyun and leaned his head against the back seat. "The birth was only a week ago. We slept with each other on the day of the birth...You will probably be able to wait a little longer." Sex was something that just didn't come to your mind at all. In addition to the fact that you had just given birth to two children, you were actually just busy breastfeeding and paying attention to your other children. You also found yourself incredibly unattractive, all the stretch marks, your belly that didn't go back, your dripping milk breast. But Jaehyun saw it differently. "Your breasts are bigger than ever, sometimes I can hardly stand to look at them." He bit his lip and you had to laugh. After birth, your breasts grew again because your body realized that it had to produce a lot more milk. You only noticed that your old nursing bras no longer fit you, but you haven't given much thought to it. "Don't worry, the breasts will stay that way as long as I breastfeed the twins. You will still get some of it afterwards." You winked and had to laugh, but Jaehyun sighed. "But two weeks is a long time."

Ikari (noun) - anger/strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility

Very few moments in our lives are time-stamped, just frozen in one particular second of an achingly long minute of a horribly long hour. That's when time stands still and we're left with a choice - to be the force that makes it move or be a victim of the one who does and Ethan wasn't sure what to choose.

He doesn't feel like he deserves to be the one to end the silence. It's not as if he wouldn't be happy to be a father now or many times after as well, but it's the way it's come to be and it's the deceit that had forced this moment of reckoning.

"Nothing to say? Because I have plenty. To. Say." She spat the words out like they're poison collecting on the tip of her tongue, her eyes narrowing as tears begin to spill and Ethan really has no words to say because what the hell could he ever say that would make it better? And she’s fighting for the good memories of them to remain unaltered, to remember the reasons to be kind. She’s fighting to keep herself empathic even as every terrible thing she had predicted is coming true in this instant. For Y/N, that's the betrayal, Ethan’s lack of willingness to fight the negative thoughts and think the best of her, to recall her soul as it was when they first met instead of loving the soul that evolved by his side.

"You kept this from me for six months, Ethan! You watched me squirm whenever I asked about your soulmate and you said NOTHING!" Her hands bawl into fists and the veins in her neck become prominent and while he swallows thickly, Ethan prepares for the worst of it. She's just starting and she has every right to get it off her chest and onto him. He deserves it all.

"I've been haunted by a soulmate that doesn't exist! God, Ethan, do you even have any idea how fucking distraught I've been over that?! And then this!" Pointing at the positive test at his feet, Ethan can tell her hands are shaky but so is her entire body. Her emotions are completely in control, her rage at its peak, but he can't help the tiny bit of joy inside him at the fact that she's still there. She may be screaming at him, but she's there, not running away like she would have done months ago but staying long enough to at least argue.

"I've mourned our children, Ethan!" Her voice is raspy and devastatingly painful, his heart desperately flailing inside his chest as her grief overcomes her and he can't touch her, he can't make it go away. This time, he's the cause instead of being her cure. In her pain she thought he’s the bad guy, yet in truth he’s drowning in a sea of uncried tears too.

"I've mourned the children I thought we couldn't have! I've let that go, given up on it entirely because I wanted you more than -", her voice breaks and a sob fills the pause that wrecks Ethan from inside out and his own tears fall uncontrollably and while he knew it would be better if he stays on the other side of the room, he had taken a step closer and she didn't take one back.

Swallowing a lump inside her throat, she shakes her head at him and speaks again, no longer screaming but her quiet tone is making it worse. It hit him hard. Her words are like nails and hammers breaking his heart apart.

"I would have given it all up for you. I didn’t give a fuck about the soulmate I might have, because you're all I can see. I would have given up having children of my own, for you. I would have forgiven you for lying to me all this time, Ethan, I would have. I was going to." Wiping her tears off, she rubbed her nose absentmindedly before her gaze fell on that test again, her own heart aching.

Did she want kids? Yes.

Did she want Ethan's kids? Definitely.

But like this? It wasn't quite the way she imagined it at all and not at a time where she's finishing her intern year. There were far too many things she wanted to do differently, to make it special. Who even gets pregnant by accident in this world anyway? She felt like a cosmic joke.

"I didn't even fucking care that you lied, I was just happy you were finally mine and then I remember the times you insisted on condoms and I though why not fuck with him a little?” Chuckling in disbelief, she actually smiled through the tears but it was far from happiness on her face.

“Just to relieve some the tension and I don't even know why I took the test, probably because of what Grayson asked today, but no matter how badly I wanted kids with you, this isn't the way or time I wanted it to happen." Moving to the bed, Y/N let herself sit on the edge, folding her hands in her lap as she lets out a long, heavy sigh. Her sigh was of a softly deflating, it was as if a tension had lifted yet left her with a melancholy instead of relief.

"I love you. I really fucking do. I just don't like you right now."

Moira - a person’s fate or destiny

Ethan couldn't stay away any longer after finally hearing her say those words and mean them, no shooter with a gun to her head, no nothing. In fact, she said it after he royally fucked up, that's got to mean something, right? Moving toward her as if gravity itself demands it of him, Ethan knows this might end badly for him, but it's a risk he has to take. For her, he has to.

Kneeling down, he got in her line of sight and while she rolled her eyes at him at first, she fixed her gaze on him after.

"I was scared you'd leave me. That you'd run and I'd never see you again. And I fucked up, I should have told you and I just...the longer it went on, the harder it was to...justify it all. But none of it was justified, because I never stopped being afraid." Daring to lay his palm on her thigh, Ethan nearly smiles when she doesn't tense up or move away, allowing him a mercy he didn't feel worthy of. Fear is an incredibly powerful influence, it is also a disguised demon. But Y/N? She’s always been too kind, too patient and he never really knew why up until now – she loves him just as much he loves her.

"I understand why you didn't tell me. I do. I just wish you had more faith in what we share...in me. You were everything and I don't know how to go back to that? Was I ever just a girl you love or was I always the soulmate you felt the obligation to love?" And that hurt him. That insecurity, the doubt, the unwillingness to believe she is without a doubt the only woman he would ever love, it broke him.

"With or without it, I'd have lived a thousand years if it meant you'd be waiting for me in the end. There is no one, past or present, I would put before you. I love you, with everything I am - heart and twenty one grams of soul." Sniffling, Ethan laid his other palm on her leg as well, holding onto her as if she's his sole anchor to the world.

"And I fucked up, big time, and I'd love nothing more than to make it up to you and it's not how I planned it either, but I think we have a chance to make something beautiful here. If you’ll have me, I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you", leaning toward his nightstand, Ethan opened the drawer and pulled out a tiny black box. Never in his life had he felt like he couldn't breathe, as if his lungs are burning for their dying breath, but when her eyes widen as he adjusts his position, making sure he's on one knee as he should be, Ethan forgot how to breathe.

"Marry me." Mustering the words with the last of his strength he watched her in hope, aware this is yet another thing he didn't want to do quite like this but it felt right. If she needed to know how much he loves her, he would go the extra mile.

Most soulmates don't get married because why would they when fate had sealed their fates together anyway. But he wanted to do that. He wanted to show her his love is stronger than anything and that she isn't just his soulmate, but the love of his life - his best friend and lover and his favorite person. Without her, he didn't see a future at all.

“You want me to”, she paused, trying to say the next words calmly instead of freaking out as openly as her heart is, “marry you?”

Seeing him nod had only fueled the last bit of anguish inside her, but then he smiles so nervously, revealing just how scared he truly is and she doesn’t want to make it worse because she doesn’t even know what she wants to do with everything that had been revealed. It’s always been impossible to truly resist him, feeling as if it might kill her, but this time she didn’t want to resist. Y/N didn’t want to fight anymore. What she needed is Ethan, even if he’s the last person she should care for right now.

Reaching for the box, she takes it from him gently. Taking a moment to look at the beautiful ring, she swallows thickly before closing the box altogether. His lips part open as a quiet gasp leaves him, his eyes forming more tears as she sets the box back on the bed and turns to him.

“I don’t think we need to make major decisions right now. If it’s alright with you, I’d rather just go to bed – no talking, just you and me.” And he can hear just how defeated, how drained she is and he can’t even imagine what it is for her and how heavily the baby must be affecting her, so he doesn’t challenge her. Swallowing every word he wants to say, biting back his tongue, Ethan just nods as he sits up, next to her.

Wrapping an arm around her, Ethan pulls her into his side, holding tightly as her arms circle around him and hold him closer. He doesn’t wait, moving them back onto the bed, not leaving her for a single second. It might as well be the last time she allows him to hold her so close, so intimately that he can feel her heart beating against his chest and he won’t waste the chance. He didn’t care about anything but her love - he’d have her love him wrong if she can’t love him right. Anything, but to be away from her - this night or any other.

Instead of creating space, he kisses her forehead and while she tried her best not to, a fleeting smile appeared on her lips. Draping a leg over his, she hides her head just under his chin, resting it on his chest as his fingers thread through her hair at the back of her neck. And just like that, in their silence, Ethan and Y/N laid together until emotions settled and their eyes closed for the night – too in love to let each other go.

Metanoia (n.) - the journey of changing one’s mind, heart, way of life

When morning came, Y/N was surprised to find herself alone in bed. She figured Ethan must have been paged and while a pang of hurt, jealousy even, followed, she couldn’t be mad at him for that. After all, she understands it comes with the job and while she hoped he’d take the day off to figure things out and make a definite choice on what they will do moving forward, she sighed. He’s got her devotion, but she really hates him sometimes.

She doesn’t want to fight him, nor sleep alone ever again, but this isn’t just like any other fight – this is a big deal, possibly the biggest of them all. How can she forgive him? Is it fair to crave him like the very air she breathes at the same time as her heart is wide open, bleeding because of his actions? But then her hand lingers on her stomach and she almost smiles with the thought of a small part of him being with her now, even when he’s not really there.

Flinging an arm to the empty place beside her, she finds herself wishing his beautiful smile was there to make the day lighter. Even now, she wished for his arms around her, to hear him say he loves her most ardently.

Groaning, she shakes her head at her own stupid self. Perhaps now when she had experienced soulmate love, a part of her forgave her parents for the way they acted – not with her but each other. Her mother forgave his father for the worst of sins, something Y/N couldn’t fathom at the time, but she’s now in a similar situation and it’s exhausting being angry with him…especially when new life is growing inside her and it’s a part of the person she loves most in the world. And no matter how sudden and unexpected it all is, she would never be like her parents. Her child would never feel unwanted or abandoned, she swore it. Even if it’s probably just a clump of cells, she fell in love with the baby. Ethan fucked up, but this baby isn’t guilty of any sin. The baby is a gift, she decided. And she’ll make him suffer, but Ethan is a gift as well and eventually she’ll forgive him. She’ll be graceful, forgiving, become his warmth in the cold of his long, lonely life. People think that forgiveness is weakness, but it's absolutely not; it takes a very strong person to forgive and if anything, Y/N had become a strong individual with so much love to give and she’d give it to him…and their baby.

Yawning, she stretched before sitting up, a little woozy but in need of food. She had barely had anything to eat yesterday and her growling stomach wasn’t shy about reminding her of that fact. However, as she put his shirt on, she found herself missing him dearly. Resting her cheek on her own shoulder just to feel his scent better, she realized just how ridiculous she is, yet she enjoyed it anyway.

Tiptoeing to the kitchen, she quickly realized she was sorely mistake. Ethan didn’t abandon her this morning at all, he was just trying to be… for the lack of a better word, Ethan.

The table is set, her favorite flowers in the middle, stacks of pancakes already prepared. She tilts her head to the opened fridge and a man’s ass being the only visible thing at this point and she’d know his ass anywhere. As the fridge closes, she’s met with a peculiar sight – his hands are full with different dressings, he’s even got a pack of cream in his mouth and she can’t help but shake her head at him fondly, gracing him with a small smile.

“Ey”, he manages something resembling a greeting, his eyes wider as if he got caught doing something he shouldn’t be doing. She’s fast by his side, grabbing the pack from his mouth before she says “Hey” too. He can’t help but notice his shirt on her, but he thought it would be safer not to comment on it.

“Since eggs make you sick, I thought you might like pancakes.” Ethan shrugged with an innocent, but hopeful smile. Exhaling through her nose, Y/N raises an eyebrow.

“I’m fine with eggs, E. It was part of the…joke. But I won’t argue, I love pancakes.”

And so they ate, glancing at each other awkwardly and while it’s completely unacceptable, Ethan wished he’d let him touch her stomach. The baby’s merely a blob at this point, but he really wanted to feel her stomach, to feel connected to both of them.

“Do you think Grayson is free today?” Y/N breaks his inner monologue. Blinking fast, Ethan nods, wiping his mouth with a napkin.

“Yeah. Why?”

“Because I want to do a checkup. I want to know everything is in order.” And that’s when Ethan stopped blinking altogether. In fact, he barely swallowed the last piece without choking.

“You want my brother to”, he stopped before he made things worse but Y/N picked up on what he means easily, rolling her eyes at him in irritation.

“I want him to do the ultrasound if it’s possible, a few labs, not a vaginal examination. I’ll ask Addy for that.” She explains, making it very, very clear she had no intention of letting Grayson anywhere near her lady parts.

Nodding, Ethan texted Grayson immediately, making it clear he’s to clear his schedule if he needs to and right when breakfast was over, the pair got ready and went into the clinic.

“Can I be happy for you?” Grayson whisper shouted in excitement as he lead them inside the room, all but clapping like a little kid, trying his best to ignore the glare Ethan is trying to kill him with.

“I’m still very angry with you. What you can do for me is do an ultrasound.” Y/N sent him a glare of her own, definitely more dangerous than Ethan’s, enough to make Grayson pipe down and press his lips together to hide any possible excitement as Y/N laid down and bared her stomach for him. Ethan settled on the chair beside the bed, his hand taking hers, interlocking their fingers and while she did glance at him in surprise, she didn’t fight his touch, rather tightened her hold on his hand in response.

“Did you draw blood?” Grayson questions as he starts the examination, trying to ease the tension that suffocated him. It’s evident she isn’t happy with either of the twins, but he didn’t expect to take so much heat for this. They’ve been friends this entire time, he thought it would have eased her anger but it seems that’s exactly what fueled it. He should have pushed Ethan to tell her sooner rather than later, maybe then they’d be laughing as they’re doing something so significant, something he’s dreaming of. He can’t wait to meet his soulmate, to fall in love and have kids and be more than what he is now. It’s nice to have more time to travel the world and find yourself, but the past fifty years have been too much. He’s been ready for a while now, he just can’t wait for her to be ready too.

“Yes. It will be back in a few. They did me a favor and put it first for testing.”

“I know you’re mad at me, princess, but this is the first baby Dolan and I’m still excited to be an uncle.” Grayson points out, only making Y/N confused.

“Didn’t you say your sister found her soulmate and is happy in Australia?”

“She did. But she isn’t romantic with her soulmate. They live across the street, but she’s married to someone else. They adopted three kids though. But it’s been a while since she died. Cameron found her soulmate when she was thirty and they had fifty two years together. We see her grandkids though.” Ethan responded, somber as he remembers the sister he loved dearly even if they didn’t always get along. She was always closer to Grayson and he struggled most when she passed even though they watched her grow old and she was very, very happy. That’s the curse of living so long – you see those you care for find their happiness and die while you’re frozen at twenty. It’s what Grayson fears the most – watching his brother grow old and die while he’s stuck as he is now.

Grayson nods, confirming Ethan’s words before licking his lips and his eyes narrow, making Y/N frown. Something doesn’t feel right. Grayson is never quiet, even if he’s trying not to get himself killed by her and maybe it has something to do with remembering his sister, but he’s too focused on the screen and his forehead is starting to glisten from sweat. The guy didn’t shut up the whole time as he did a breast ultrasound, so why did he quiet down now?

“You’re quiet. I don’t like it.” She spoke up, craning her neck to try and see the monitor and Ethan did the same.

Clearing his throat, Grayson turned to her with a small smile.

“Just need more gel.” Adding more of the cool gel on her stomach, Grayson emerges himself further into the ultrasound just as a knock on the door makes Y/N gasp.

“It’s Addy, I have the labs.” It’s time for Ethan to sweat because while Y/N may be perceptive and see that his brother is acting weird, he’s been with him for over a hundred years and he knows when something is off right from the start. Ethan sighs as the doctor enters. The sigh that came was a signal, not of his resolve leaving but of the level his tension had reached. Doctors aren’t usually ones picking up results, especially not experienced ones like Abby. Perhaps it’s special treatment because it’s Y/N and well, him, but he couldn’t help the odd feeling inside his chest that something’s amiss.

“Hello, dear. I got the call from the laboratory, so I thought I’d pick these up for you.” She smiles sweetly at Y/N and only then notices how serious everyone is. Seeing Ethan’s hand in Y/N’s only makes her smile wider, showing just how happy she is for Ethan to have found someone like Y/N. Addy wouldn’t comment on it, but she was wishing them a bright future.

“Thank you, Addison.” Grayson nods at the iPad, gesturing for her to hand it over and she’s quick to do so before excusing herself, leaving them alone.

“I swear to God if you don’t start speaking, I will start breaking things.” Y/N’s voice is low and threatening and her eyes are hard, but it doesn’t make it easier for Grayson at all.

“Your blood-work shows higher levels of Beta HCG, something that would show in a pregnancy.” Grayson starts, only to get interrupted with a very relieved chuckle from Ethan who was getting worse at hiding his joy over the pregnancy with each passing moment.

“You scared me. I thought there was something wrong.” But Ethan’s smile died down when he noticed Grayson’s gloomy face. There was no hints of joy on his face at all, just confusion and worry.

“There is something wrong, isn’t it?” Y/N forced herself to say it, to hear herself admit it. She wants this baby so bad, even if it isn’t the right timing nor way, but she does want the baby. Just this morning she felt…lucky for being able to get pregnant after thinking it wasn’t in the cards for her. She felt hopeful, and she didn’t feel lonely anymore. With Ethan and a tiny Ethan around, she saw her future filled with smiles and now? She couldn’t grasp it. It felt like she lost everything.

“Say it.” She insisted, because she needed to hear it. She needed to know. And though he knew he shouldn’t, Grayson said it.

“I can’t find the heartbeat.”

Damian Elliot Fitzgerald.

2. Preferred Names or Nicknames?

Damian doesn’t have any nicknames and he’s not really the type to go by one.

3. What does their name mean? Does it have any significance in their family? Do they like their name?

Damian means “to tame”, chosen by his father who took inspiration from St. Cosmas and Damian -- the patron saints of pharmacy and medicine. Context: the Fitzgeralds are a hoity toity family full of doctors, at least on his dad’s side. Elliot is his father’s name. Damian very much enjoys his name and likes to think that he’s very special and great things are meant for him because he carries his father’s name. (Unlike his ridiculously perfect older brother who is only named after their grandfathers, ha!)

4. Age and Date of Birth?

He is 18 years old and his date of birth is April 19, 2001.

5. Gender and Pronouns?

Cis Male. He/him.

6. Hometown?

Boston, MA.

7. Does your character fit into any well known archetypes or tropes?

The Chief? The Gentleman? I’m bad at archetypes. He’s also a very stereotypical Aries dude. (Me, pretending I know anything about zodiacs.)

8. How long have they been at Broadripple?

Damian has been enrolled at Broadripple since Freshman year.

9. What led them to apply to Broadripple? Was it a decision made by them or by their parents/guardians or somewhere in between?

Before his father even graduated from Broadripple, he planned that his children would attend the academy. They’re a staple there; it’s tradition and the Fitzgeralds are all about that.

10. Whether they’ve been at Broadripple four days or four years, do they enjoy it? Do they like Broadripple?

Damian absolutely adores Broadripple. He’s been fed stories about house Fenwick and the academy since he was old enough to understand words. Growing up, he fantasized about Broadripple the way some kids fantasize about attending Harvard or Yale. Every school he’s attended prior to Broadripple was just a stepping stone as far as he’s concerned.

11. What house are they in? Do they care very much about their house?

Fenwick. And abso-freakin’-lutely. He treats the house like he’s their dad and often refers to its members as his ‘Fenwick family’. He tends to go out of his way to befriend and develop close bonds with them, whether or not it seems like they’ll get along. Damian fully believes that the best kind of leadership is respect-based, so he’s relentlessly proactive -- always trying to take care of and encourage his Fenwickians with the hope that all of his hard work and toil will pay off in the long run. He 100% intends on winning the Clary Cup and getting his name engraved on the Clary shield before graduation so it’s important to him that his ship is always tight and out of trouble. #fenwickpride

12. Who do they share a dorm with, or are they on their own for the moment? What are they like to live with? Are they clean or messy? Early risers or night owls?

Damian shares a dorm with Connor Roberts, who he decided he quite likes so he’s been making an effort to develop a friendship with him. Damian likes to consider himself a very good roommate -- an ideal roommate even. He’s always mindful that his side of the room is tidy, with everything in its place and that his bed is always made when he’s not sleeping in it. He sleeps early and rises early. Since the start of November, he’s been a little restless for obvious reasons so he’s gotten a bit... nitpicky. If he sees something of Conny’s that’s on the floor or seems out of place and Conny’s not there, he’ll pick it up and put it where he thinks it belongs. He’ll also like, fluff a pillow if he thinks it looks a little flat, smoothens out the sheets if it looks a lil creased. You could leave your books open to random pages all over your bed and leave, and when you come back, they’re all neatly stacked on your desk and bookmarked and Damian’s just like :) I hope you don’t mind. You might have wanted to rest on your bed upon return so I took the liberty of tidying up for you. He’s just a little more intense than usual since Izzy’s disappearance.

13. How is your character’s dorm decorated? Is it bare or bursting at the seems with personality? Any particular sentimental items from home?

It’s very classic and masculine. All of his desk accessories are matching and made of tan leather and accented with brass. His mattress is fitted with fancy white Hotel™ bedding but his duvet is deep red because #fenwickpride. There’s a large monthly planner that adorns the wall that his bed is pushed against so he can review what’s in store for him tomorrow/for the week before he falls asleep. A bi-fold picture frame sits on his desk. One half holds a photo of him, his sister, and their parents. (Where is Joseph? We just don’t know.) The other half holds a photo of the 3 Fitzgerald beagles looking cute as hell bc obvi. Everything clearly has its place except these 3 photos that are stuck to the wall in front of Damian’s desk with tape (gasp!). One of the God Squad being pure having a picnic somewhere, one of Alpha being cute just because, and one of him and Eliza that he took that she doesn’t like because her face is in it and she’s laughing and that obviously isn’t allowed but like it’s Damian’s favorite so sucks 2 suck.

14. What is their favourite subject at school? Do they even have a favourite? Why?

Of all of the classes he’s taking right now, Damian’s favorite is World Culture. He likes learning about other cultures and ways of life; he thinks it’s interesting.

15. Are they involved in any clubs? Which ones?

He’s been a member of the Buddy Club since his second half of his Freshman year. He’s Vice President of the Student Weekend Activities Team. He’s also the secretary for the Student Council.

16. How does your character feel about Broadripple’s Unofficial Clubs? Do they know about them? Are they a part of any of them?

Damian thinks the Broadripple Boys Club is childish and in poor taste. He avoids associating with them if he can help it but he’s civil with them for the most part even if he thinks they need new hobbies other than destroying property, lives, and their livers.

He’s a member of the Unofficial Chastity Club because celibacy is important and you should always leave room for Jesus. 👀 (It's also a very good reminder that he shouldn’t listen to his hormonal teen body no matter how incessant.)

He doesn’t know about Broadripple Unsolved but if he did, he’d think it was a waste of time.

17. Does your character participate in any sports? If so, what made them join the team?

Damian is Swim captain and a member of the Cross Country team.

The Fitzgeralds think it’s important that their children grow up involved in at least one sport because the physical/social/mental benefits are far too great. Swimming just happened to be what Damian naturally gravitated toward and was best at, so it was no-brainer that it’s the team that he wanted to join upon arrival four years ago. (It may have also been about wanting to assert dominance since he’s been swimming competitively and kicking ass since the age of 8.)

As for Cross Country, Damian’s parents have always encouraged a healthy lifestyle. They’re the type of parents that jog in the morning and make the family run a 5K every year. It was familiar. He also just wanted to be able to workout and not worry about becoming a prune.

18. What afternoon activities does your character do? Do they just do the one mandatory one or are they involved in multiple? Why?

Damian is an animal shelter volunteer. He’s a big dog lover and he cares a lot about the city’s furry friends so it was the obvious choice. He’d honestly do more than one if he had the time -- he was a nursing home volunteer during his Junior year and he loved it -- but considering his involvement in literally everything else, he decided to stick with just one.

19. Do they miss their home when they’re at Broadripple? Do they often go home for the weekends or do they only go home during holiday breaks?

Funnily enough, not really. Damian isn’t the type of person to miss places. The person he would miss the most from home is his sister, Eliza, and since she attends Broadripple with him so he doesn’t really ‘miss home’. He does go home every weekend though unless there’s a SWAT outing planned because he misses his dogs and his parents think it’s nice if the family sits and has a meal together at least once a week. Also often, there’s a schmancy event the Fitzgerald kids need to show up at so their parents can boast of their achievements and show off what good parents they are, so :)))

20. Did your character know Izzy De Santis or Maggie Monroe?

Yes. They were all part of the same Bible-loving group of buddies that the Weekend Warriors cleverly dubbed the God Squad. Izzy was also Damian’s best friend and right-hand man, so he’s terribly saddened by the sudden hole the Melleray Senior left in his life. And while he wasn’t as close with Maggie, Damian does feel quite disturbed by her sudden departure as well. He just finds it rather difficult to keep in mind that her disappearance is just as important as Izzy’s when Maggie wasn’t the one who spotted Damian at the gym every other day.

21. Has your character heard of Edith Lynch? Do they know the story?

He just thinks it’s good manners. He would even go as far as to say the rest of America needs to be a little more like Nighmore.

Yes, he’s noticed they’ve closed down. Though, he’s more bothered by The Kettle being closed than Hill’s Wholefoods. He was a really big fan of their lattes so it’s a bit disappointing to him that he can’t enjoy that product anymore. He quickly got over it though and hasn’t paid much of a visit to Nighmore since then.

i know why dr. nero read a tale of two cities: you’re welcome

let me assure you, you do not follow someone with an english literature degree for nothing. today i will deliver unto you some thoughts on a tale of two cities by charles dickens.

did it take me two months to read the whole book? yes. did i like it? kinda yeah. but did mark walden really pick this book for a reason? yes. yes. i promise you: it’s not just a random, old, boring book picked for the sake of being boring and old.

but before you fight me on that point, let’s all make sure we understand the story (under the cut).

what is a tale of two cities about?

a tale of two cities (henceforth abbreviated as ATTC), in one sense, is about the triumph of family and the ability for social order to survive great evil—that is, the French Revolution—bonded with themes of great sacrifice and salvation.

Doctor Mannette was a prisoner of the Bastille for ten years, and when he escapes he hardly knows himself. He is rescued by the love of a daughter he has never met before, Lucie, and though she is nearly an adult they form an unbreakable father-daughter bond that carries them through Lucie’s marriage and eventual motherhood. Lucie marries Charles Darnay, who, like herself and her father, is of French nationality but lives in England. Unfortunately, Charles is the son of an aristocrat, and so when he is caught in France during the revolution, he is sentenced to death. Ultimately, though, a friend of the family (Sydney) redeems himself by arriving to die in Charles’ place, and Lucie’s family sets out back to England.

in one sense, ATTC is kind of a proto-political thriller—it's asking big questions like, what is justice? how should people respond when they are oppressed? how do they respond when they are oppressed? how do families survive when injustice reigns?—in the setting of spies and political clout.

and that’s well and good, but it’s also very abstract. in the concrete, why might mark walden have picked this book, out of all the books?

we can get the simple things out of the way. it’s long. believe it or not, dickens is a great author to read aloud, because his prose is very sparkly. it’s a weird book to use to try and get a teenager to like you. all of this is a factor, sure. but i have three reasons that I think *might* have mattered to this book’s selection.

Neither Raven nor Nero is quite so stainless as these characters, but they are likewise united by a found family relationship. Nero pulls Raven from a life of death and torture and misery—a place where she has been just as much a captive as Doctor Manette or Charles Darnay. Though they must face the possibility of death every day, Nero says, “Hey. I’ll walk with you.” As I mentioned before, ATTC is about social stability winning out against chaotic violence, which is an apt parallel to the life Nero offers Raven against that which Anastasia Furan has provided so far. Nero is the stability that helps Raven find new life, and we know it to be a good thing.

1) Because this is very much a book about found family.

Lucie first meets her father when she is about to finish the second decade of her life. Her father is a stranger to her, and yet their connection is immediate and saving for the both of them. At the beginning of the book, the relationship they build represents the first victory of family—and the hope that they survive the end is likewise our consolation. Yet even at the end, when only the guillotine awaits Sydney, found family is in play. Sydney goes to die in Charles Darnay’s stead and finds himself in the company of a seamstress, who also does not deserve to die. They don’t know each other, and yet they find refuge in each other at their point of death: companions on the road to the next life.

Dr. Nero would never love a book if the villains were not sympathetic, if not justified, if not right. And this is one of those books where—even though the protagonists are a little too perfect to deserve anything nasty—the villains might be right. In fact, they may not be sympathetic, and yet there's the possibility that they are right. The system has to come down, people have to be ripped from their pedestals, and things have to change. The ensuing conflict is violent and unjust, and yet it's that kind of evil and firmness I can see Dr. Nero admiring. Furthermore, it is the conflict that Raven might wish to embrace as retaliation against what she has experienced at the hands of Anastasia. There is a system that Raven would be ready to tear down, and this novel offers space for that.

2) Because despite the fact that our protagonists are a family we want to see win, the antagonists are extremely easy to root for.

The villains in ATTC include the government, a man named Defarge, his wife, The Vengeance, and agents Jacques 1, 2, and 3. It is true that guillotining a lot of people without necessarily requiring evidence is pretty bad, but you can also understand why these people are angry. People have been starving. The aristocracy has absolutely abused its power. Men are indentured in hard labor, women are held captive, children are murdered, and that’s life, because aristocrats are kings. Again, I am *not* saying that everybody in the French Revolution was altogether justified, but their motivations remain valid.

Now, let’s pause. I stand by my first two reasons—these are clear elements of intertextuality between ATTC and H.I.V.E. that absolutely exist between the books. They are valid, but I would also feel comfortable saying that maybe Mark Walden didn’t have them in mind when he published Deadlock.

However, I still stand by my assertion that he picked this book for a particular reason, and this last one is that reason:

“‘Then tell Wind and Fire where to stop,’ returned madame; ‘but don’t tell me.’”

3) Because Madame Defarge is a fucking badass.

I could tell that Madame Defarge was a great character from the beginning. Though she was mainly in the background to start, she received a few flourishes of detail that indicated she was something special. Like a deathly Fate, Madame Defarge develops as the personification of the French Revolution: a violent, chaotic quasi-assassin character who is determined to rain hell down upon everyone she hates. (note: she hates the protagonists. a lot.) Madame Defarge is unfettered by constraints of family and so she is free to arm herself with a pistol and a dagger and take people’s lives into her own hands. She single-handedly leads her fellow women into the fray when the Bastille falls. She, too, is a character with whom one would not want to mess. And some of the things said about her are just FANTASTIC.

“Of a strong and fearless character, of shrewd sense and readiness, of great determination, of that kind of beauty which not only seems to impart to its possessor firmness and animosity, but to strike into others an instinctive recognition of those qualities; the troubled time would have heaved her up, under any circumstances. But, imbued from her childhood with a brooding sense of wrong, and an inveterate hatred of a class, opportunity had developed her into a tigress. She was absolutely without pity.”

“Lying hidden in her bosom, was a loaded pistol. Lying hidden at her waist, was a sharpened dagger. Thus accoutred, and walking with the confident tread of such a character, and with the supple freedom of a woman who had habitually walked in her girlhood, bare-foot and bare-legged, on the brown sea-sand, Madame Defarge took her way along the streets.”

Wow, right?

What we have here is a woman who is more immovable than the elements, a primal embodiment of predatory strength, and, one might even argue, a picture of liberated femininity whose freedom is rooted as much in her body as in her weapons.

This is something I know: Dr. Nero and Mark Walden both would notice and care a great deal about such a character.

I shan’t make mincemeat of Walden’s personal thoughts, but I can speculate why this woman would matter to Dr. Nero.

One, Madame Defarge is cheated of her victory. Dr. Nero would absolutely take issue with the way the madame exits the book, not least of all because he would know that she could do better. You know those books where you think the villain should have won? This is one such book.

Two, Madame Defarge parallels the violence in Anastasia Furan. This is a woman whose family has been shattered by violence, who may well deserve remuneration for what happened, who is hurt and beaten but not yet killed... and she’s also totally stuck in the past. A main theme of ATTC is that oppression will only beget violence, and likewise, Anastasia doesn’t have anything in her future but death.

But third, and most importantly, Madame Defarge is the character with whom Raven is most likely to identify with, and the character she most needs to escape. Raven starts her story also shattered, also violent, and, most tragically, trapped in somebody else’s past. I think teenage-Raven would find Madame Defarge the most engaging character to listen to, but she is also the character she must break away from—leave behind the chaos and accept a more reliable structure in her life—to avoid being smothered by anger that will never really get anyone anywhere.

In other words, it may be that Madame Defarge is the villain who first inspired Nero and who he hopes will inspire Raven as she reinvents herself apart from Anastasia’s chaos. Madame Defarge is a call to action.

If you’re still with me after all of that, you might be thinking, cool, but why does this matter? Who really cares about a book that got mentioned one time and nothing came of it?

I’m glad you asked.

At the end of the day, Nero and Raven’s relationship parallels the love that ATTC’s characters find when they are trapped in darkness and death, but their business parallels the grim revenge that Madame Defarge sets out to wreak upon the world—and it is the business of their enemies, as well.

It matters because we get a more complex moral landscape with morally complex characters.

In A Tale of Two Cities, the good people are saved and the bad people do not get their revenge. Things in H.I.V.E. are not so simple. Nero and Raven share the stability of family at the same time that they long for revenge; traditional poles of “good” and “bad” occupy the same hearts at the same time.

Why does Dr. Nero read this book to Raven? I think one way to read it is that it’s his way of saying, “We’re together in this, and I believe that you can be saved and have your revenge too. We can admire Madame Defarge, and we can do better. ”

For Dr. Nero to read this book to Raven when nothing but a story can save her, A Tale of Two Cities is a promise that there is room for badass assassin ladies in literature and in life. Raven’s story doesn’t close with her first failure.

For those of us who live outside the pages of the book, the presence of this book means something for us as well. If you, too, can hold an assassin in your heart, then you are also participating in the work of salvation. When you listen to a story and get to know someone, you pluck them from obscurity and bring them into the fold—if even the most chaotic and violent of us can belong, then anyone can.

Raven can.

Nero can.

And so can you.

Answers to your questions related to property and divorce in Texas

Depending upon when and how that property came to be in your life you may be at risk of losing a portion, or all of it, in your divorce.

That is where yesterday and today’s blog posts from the Law Office of Bryan Fagan come in. We are here to discuss topics related to property in your divorce. Real property, personal property, income and all the categories in between.

How is income generated from separate property treated?

If you or your spouse owns property that is to be considered separately owned by one of you, the income from that property is actually considered community property. However, if you have a premarital or marital agreement in place that says that separate property income is considered the separate property of that spouse then this would be an exception to the general rule. Also, if the separate property was a gift from you to your spouse, the income from that gift is also your spouse’s separate property.

With all of that said, if you own an investment like a stock, bond or mutual fund that earns interest or dividends those earnings are considered to be community property in Texas. As I recommended in yesterday’s blog post, if you are reading this blog and have a significant amount of separate property investments and want all the income from those investments to be considered your property then you are best off negotiating a marital or premarital property agreement with your spouse.

The relevancy of a premarital property agreements in dividing property

Yesterday I mentioned that there is a presumption in Texas family law that all property on hand at the time a divorce is filed in Texas is considered to be community property. This means that if you or your spouse own separate property you will need to be able to prove that it is separate property if challenged by the other spouse. Depending upon how you acquired the property or what you proof you have of its character, this may be a difficult task.

Given the possible difficulty of proving the nature of the property it is a good idea to at least consider entering into a premarital agreement with your spouse on property matters before you even get married. A premarital agreement can remove any question as to how a particular piece of property is to be characterized in a divorce.

You and your spouse are also able to carve out exceptions to the rules regarding separate property income counting as community property and on any other subject you wish. Basically, any property you want to determine to be either community or separate can be done so long as you both agree to it. This is a great way of side stepping the law in favor of working out an agreement that better suits your family.

How do creditors view the property of both spouses?

Family Law Attorney Houston: If you have a contract with a creditor wherein you are loaned money in exchange for paying back that money on a set schedule with interest, then you need to know that this creditor has the right to reach for your separate property and any community property that you manage in order to satisfy their debt claim against you.

This is true when it comes to credit claims against you. What happens if you are sued for a negligence type claim in court? Say you were negligent in doing something and injure another person. That person wins a judgment against you- what property can he or she access in order to satisfy that judgment? Be aware that in this scenario, the judgment creditor can not only access the property that you own separately from your spouse, but also any and all community property in existence. This means that only your spouse’s separate property is safe from a judgment creditor.

For example, if your husband is a doctor you all probably have some sort of agreement or arrangement in place that protects your assets from being seized in the even that he is sued for malpractice. Your home is not subject to being seized by a judgment creditor so you could send your interests to him in the house in exchange for a like amount of community property that would ordinarily be his. Personal assets of yours and your husband would be safeguarded as a result and you both would not be any worse for the ware.

Why it all matters- dividing property up in a divorce

The biggest, most crucial distinction to make when it comes to dividing up property as being community or separate in nature is that it matters a great deal in a divorce. When you get a divorce both you and your spouse are entitled under the law to be able to retain your own separate property. The judge in a trial has jurisdiction to divide your community property but cannot do the same with separate property that either of you own.

Property is to be divided in a just and equitable manner in Texas. Contrary to popular belief this does not mean a 50/50 division, however. Other factors in the marriage such as the age and physical well being of you and your spouse as well as the need for each of you to be supported in the future are relevant for a judge to consider. Also, and perhaps most importantly, if you or your spouse played a role in the breakup of the marriage then this would need to be considered as well.

Pre-marriage planning isn’t delaying the inevitable

A lot of people tend to think that by even considering a premarital agreement on property issues you are “jinxing” the marriage itself or admitting that it is only a matter of time before a divorce is filed. Why else agree to how your marriage will end, as far as what happens with your property? Is it even healthy to consider what should happen to your property in the event of a divorce before you are even married?

After witnessing many a family go through tough times when it comes to dividing up property I would argue that it absolutely does make sense to consider whether a premarital agreement is right for you and your family. If you are entering into a second marriage, or an older person with substantial wealth and property and have a child from a previous relationship that needs specialized care, you may want to consider signing a premarital agreement.

Premarital agreements allow you to negotiate with your spouse to be while you are both happy with one another and able to think clearly on important issues. Consider that if you do need to divorce your spouse it is not always the best environment to have to negotiate with him or her when you are upset and hurt after the filing of a divorce. Having a clear cut understanding of where your property is going and how its getting there can be great from a peace of mind perspective as well. As with anything important as this, it is crucial to be represented while in the negotiation phase so as to learn all options and be able to act on them in your best interests.

Batwoman - S1 E3 - Down Down Down

So Kate would like her sister Beth back - sure, I get it, but come on, any remotely reasonable person would know that the odds of that happening virtually nill. To start with, even if she were a well adjusted person, which obviously she's not, picking up where they left off after 15 years would difficult. Not impossible, mind you; they'd show that often enough on Unsolved Mysteries when estranged family members or adopted children would get reunited with biological family and new bonds would be made - at least for sure at first and while the cameras were running.

But those are under ideal circumstances, which these are not. Beth is not Beth anymore, she's clearly seen some shit; and more than that, she's evidently become a murderous psychopath and arguably unhinged from reality. She's not the little girl you knew, Kate; and for that matter, neither are you. Again, it's been 15 years. I can't remember if they said how old they were when the accident happened, I think maybe 11 or 12, 13 tops; so just as a numbers perspective they've been out of each other's lives long than they've been in them; and even if each has continually been in the other's thoughts the last 15 years, that's a long time apart, especially for that period of life and development, that neither of them bears much resemblance of whatever memory they have of one another, to say nothing of how much they may have idealized or even maybe twisted and vilified that memory. Kate says this as if Beth disappeared a few months ago and that she knows a more recent version of her sister this woman could conceivably return to - imagine your own sibling wanting to have the same relationship you had at 12. I'm pretty far removed from 12 at this point, a couple of times over, and the relationship with my siblings is not the same as it was then; and I wouldn't want it to be. I get that Kate might lament missing out on the interim developments, but especially in the case of Alice/Beth, that 15 year span in between has arguably more significance than your run of the mill estranged family member; because it's resulted in a person who has not only been traumatized, ostensibly, but who themselves have become a dangerous person. One who is responsible for actions that can't just be ignored for the sake or family reunion. To much the same end, I can't help but wonder what's taken Beth so long to come back and enact whatever it is she's doing in Gotham or why she's doing it. 15 years is a long fucking time to be this crazy and hell bent, before she seeks satisfaction. It's conceivable she was locked up for a period of time or something, but it seems like the only reason they made it that long was so that it could be a long enough time for Beth to be unrecognizable and her identity be in doubt. It arguably would have made more sense to make her disappearance a more recent thing - maybe 3 years and present the possibility that it somehow coincided with Batman's disappearance; and then have her hide her face for some reason, maybe because she became disfigured or something. At least then she'd have a clearer bond with an adult Kate. The way they framed the TV ad with Tommy, I honestly thought it was meant to be another security firm, similar to the Crows; and it was mainly later when someone mentions have having contract with the Crows that I had to go back to see that the ad was for real estate or whatever. Still, in hindsight I'm slightly disappointed, because having someone like Tommy and knowing who he is from the comics, the idea of him being in charge of a rival security firm and in the business keeping people safe would be, objectively, a terrible thing, but from the creative, dramatic perspective, loaded with all kinds of now missed possibilities. Jesus, Tommy, we get it, you have an incredibly small penis and are desperate to overcompensate. I can't tell which of us cares less, me or Kate....It's probably a draw. So many things to unpack with this break-in at the Wayne-Tech vault. First, and I guess they've referenced this before - Luke actually has contact with Bruce, or at least that's the implication with Luke saying he'd better inform Bruce. So unless Luke is just covering and making it seem like he's actually in regular contact with Bruce, but is in fact just as clueless where he is as the rest of the world, Bruce himself is not missing, he just up and left Gotham - which is dumb and out of character, generally speaking. Second, who is running Wayne Enterprises? The building Kate broke into in the first episode was boarded up and seemingly abandoned; and there was no clear indication what the company overall was up to, but ever since she initially made her way into the building, now she comes and goes from Bruce's office - presumably mostly because of the access to the cave - yet there doesn't seem to be any implication that she's take on any sort of role within the Wayne Enterprises company; right? So who's even in charge? The last one I guess would be just a general observation that they're taking a long fucking time to origin story here. It's episode 3 and haven't even caught Kate up to where she was last year during the cross-over. Instead they're dicking around with this whole mistaken identity with Batman for way too long; though I won't be surprise if by the end of this episode they decide to have Kate declare her independence from "Batman" by adding the final touches that make it clear she's not the same person. But they should have gotten there already, mainly because of the fact that they've already established as a fully established and active vigilante/hero in her own right a year ago and they're backtracking, which makes little sense. Wait, why the fuck would Bruce have Wayne-Tech develop a gun of any kind? Don't give me that shit that "he had it developed in case the suit ever fell into the wrong hands." Fuck you. Settings the apparent literal magic woven into this special material the suit is made of that can cause a bullet to bounce off it; yet was simply enough for Luke to alter to fit Kate; surely there must be a world of alternate options for safe-guarding this sort of tech before Bruce fucking Wayne of all people commissioned a gun that could best this miracle armor - especially rather than fast track R&D of the material the suit was made of to make it cost effective enough to make it available to law enforcement and anyone else who might benefit from such incredible protection. I mean, surely just by virtue of being bulletproof doesn't in itself make you the end all, be all of unstoppable threats, right? Because by this logic it seems that Bruce equated the effectiveness of the suit as somehow more dangerous than the weapon he had designed to undermine the effectiveness of the suit. Oh, okay, "If Bruce built that rail gun, he built something that could stop it" - talk about your fucking rabbit holes. So Bruce developed the armor for the Batsuit, which he then in turned developed the gun to take out the Batsuit should the need arise, but now we're supposing that he then must have developed something to stop the rail gun. So would he have wanted to work on something that could take out the thing that can stop the rail gun? What about a thing to stop the thing that stops the rail gun? I often like to say for most shows "the lie is better" - as in, whatever pretense or lie a character tells, often that would have been the better truth or reality for the story to work with; and in this case, the "lie" that the rail gun had a gps tracker hidden it arguably should be true. Don't get me wrong, it's a good bluff; and it might a dubious idea should that rail gun inexplicably become commercially available, but definitely while it's in the R&D stage and especially being so dangerous, it should not have been left to chance and some steps of tracking it should it be stolen should have been taken. Oh, man, I hope the elevator with the wait staff in it make it out alright. No, I'm serious, out of all the characters they've introduced, the only ones I could actually give a shit about are the ones they never bothered actually saying two words, yet they seem more sympathetic virtually anyone else whose life is presently in peril. I know they've stuck close to Tommy's backstory, yet somehow they've managed to make him a pathetic, whiny bitch instead of psycho he should be. Mind you, I was never much a fan of Hush, so maybe there's no good way to do that character the way he's written in the comics. Well fuck. I swear to God I wrote that part about the wait staff long before I got to the part where Tommy actually killed the wait staff... Now I don't care what happens. I mean, I don't want Tommy to win, but I don't give a shit if the other characters plummet to their deaths. Not now they've killed Charles, Mike and Michael B. That's right, they have names. Charles was a dancer, studied at Julliard. Michael's going to have a baby with his long time girlfriend, but he didn't know yet; she was going to tell him when he got home. Mike didn't have much in particular going on, he was just living day by day, trying to figure out life.... Damn you Tommy!! Damn you all to hell..... Like, Kate's step-sister Mary's alright; she's cute, but I can't decide if she's pulling a Bruce Wayne and only pretending to be a party girl to cover for her being a secret street doctor; or if she legitimately is trying to lead both kinds of lives. Other than the that, I don't give a shit if he pushes the button. Wait, are any of those people in the elevator that crashed alive? How? They made it a huge point how high up they had to go to get to the party and none of them were on the elevator very long before Tommy stopped them; it's not like it only crashed one or two floors; they achieved free fall. Presumably that should have hit with a force no one survives, I would think. At least the hair looks better than in Elseworlds. I mean, if you can just get the upper hand on the fucker and take him out, is it really "stalling" versus just getting the job done without needing to neutralize the rail gun? Obviously it's a good advantage to have, but if you can just as easily engage Tommy without neutralizing it, it's kind of moot. Sure, there's risk, but it's like you're 100% bulletproof even without the rail gun; you still have a vital part of your head exposed, so there's arguably a degree of risk with any engagement and doesn't seem that different. But I bet in spit of this, Tommy's going to last long enough to get his hands on that special gun one last time, but right before he can pull the trigger, the light turns green and the weapon is neutralized. Oh, gee, I wonder if Kate will need to use the double-ended grappling hook she learned about conveniently earlier in the episode....Nah..... Hmm....so the suit can cause a bullet from the best commercially available handgun bounce off it; should Kate even be able to feel Tommy standing on her hand? Or, I guess, should it hurt? How would that work? The save by Beth might be more meaningful if she hadn't killed a guy earlier in the episode; or showed any kind of signs that she should be rehabilitated and that this was a positive step forward. Instead it seems more like a plot convenience; and a pointless one, because what does it achieve? Are we supposed to see hope for her now? Wait, "she could have found one of Beth's recitals online"? From 15 years ago? Probably not. I had to look to be sure, and Youtube wasn't created until 2005; and I know there were no doubt precursors to Youtube, but I honestly can't think of any; at least none of any prominence and certain none that I can think to find now to look up some video that might have been put up back before 2004. Streaming video was rare back then; at least as much as I recall it. Yet another reason they shouldn't have set the "accident" so long ago. Augh, I remember catching the tail end of this episode when watching a Supergirl episode a few weeks back; and seeing the whole "what should we call her?" exchange; and it's just as stupid now as it was then that any of the characters are struggling that hard to come up with "Batwoman". I mean, seriously, "Batchick"? Fuck you.

Chapter One

An excerpt from chapter one of my YA series

Each morning before the sun could shine down onto the Prax Medical Center it first had to make its tenuous trek up the mountains that lay on the eastern border of the expansive facility. On some days it would be well into the morning before it rose high enough to shine down without any impediment, at which point Mia Smythe would sometimes give guests tours of the grounds.

Mia typically wore a blazer for these occasions, which she thought made her look more professional, though on this particular day it was left open in the front, and so failed to entirely hide the lilac colored dragon on her t-shirt. The sophistication of the blazer was further undercut by the bright, artificial orange of her hair, which she was keeping out of the way with a tight bun.

At 10:34 p.m. she was emerging from the New England pine forest that encircled most of the facility’s eastern side, leading three guests in through a tall gate hidden amongst the trees.

“The oldest part of the Gray Building’s been around since the eighteen twenties,” she was saying. “It’s been restored several times since its construction, and in the seventies Prax began using it as a residential and community meeting building. The hospital itself wasn’t finished until seventy-eight, and the smaller buildings you’re about to see have been put up over the course of the past few decades.” She spoke in a bright tone, what her friends called her ‘tour guide voice’, in stark contrast to the unease and suspicious with which the members of her group were regarding her.

From where she stood this was no ordinary day, but she couldn’t be sure if they knew that. Did they watch the news? Even if they did, they might have easily missed it; there was enough else going on in the world that it seemed nothing was too big to overlook…

Mia pulled herself back into the present. She reminded herself not to fidget, something she’d scarcely had to do since she was ten, and reordered her thoughts to prioritize the tour. The main part of the facility was just coming into view.

The buildings that she had mentioned were primarily spread out along the forest line. The hospital, a four story high rectangular structure made mostly of steel and glass, was close to where they had entered. The Gray Building was a few dozen yards away, a renovated Victorian manor with new and old nooks and crannies, and several pointed roofs at different heights. The rest of the houses were small and square; none were any taller than one level, and few were more than one room.

Mia could name the residents of each one. She had been in every building on the hospital grounds, and there were none that she couldn’t easily produce short anecdotes or trivia about.

But people didn’t come to The Prax Facility because it was a friendly neighborhood.

Mia stopped part way between the two large buildings. She turned and smiled. No one was smiling back, but after a brief silence the woman closest to her spoke.

“Well at least I can say it’s the largest hospital we’ve seen so far…”

“…It’s a bit more than just a hospital,” Mia said. “We’ve recently filed a petition with the state of Massachusetts to have Prax recognized as a village. If you’re interested, you can read about it on my-”

“-But it’ll need to be more than that if we’re going to entrust you with our son’s wellbeing.”

There was a boy about Mia’s age standing between the two adults, staring down at his shoes over the heavy copy of Joanna Prax’s Understanding Elthentity that Mia had given to him when they arrived. She let her gaze rest on him for a minute before she continued on.

“The nature of the hospital’s specialization has built a real sense of community here, and ensures Prax’s place at the forefront of its field. There’s really no other place that compares when it comes to finding new treatments for Elthentity specific ailments.”

“That’s not what I’ve heard,” the woman said. “Each and every place thinks it’s the best. And we care more about getting Sean better and back home than we do about whatever team bonding exercises your staff might run here.”

Mia’s thoughts had been beginning to drift. She thought of all those other members of her community here, wondered how many of them had heard the day’s news. She thought of those who she was most eager to discuss it with: her friend Michael, Polly Ashe who ran the tutoring program for residential patients…

Once again she had to make an effort to recenter herself in the moment. She inhaled and shifted the way her hands were held in front of her.

“Well we’re certainly the only facility on this side of the country that specializes in the Elthentity condition,” she said.

If he’s going to get better at all it’s going to happen here. She didn’t say it. She could have. She thought about it. But she didn’t. She barely had time to feel proud of herself for her restraint before the mother cut in again.

“Don’t think we haven’t done our research, Ms. Smith. Our son’s health is important to us. We know Prax’s record. Many of your patients find themselves coming back here after being released don’t they?”

Mia nodded through the mispronunciation of her name, wondering if she could get the tour going again if she just continued walking. Since they had stopped in their little circle she had become acutely aware of the silence between their words, the blades of grass poking through the openings in her sandals, and the sunlight raising up high enough to threaten her eyes. She was eager to conclude this chapter of her day and move on to the next. She took another deep breath and separated her hands.

“Unfortunately patients with the particular conditions that our doctors specialize in treating tend not to get single fast releases from anywhere. So yes, many of them do return for check-ins, or after realizing that they’re flaring up again. Then there are plenty who choose to shift over to us for their primary care if they’re able to. Besides that you have to look at the fact that nearly thirty percent of Prax patients end up returning as staff, which we’ve noticed helps to ensure a certain quality of care.”

The woman watched Mia skeptically. “We visited a doctor in Pennsylvania whose patients never return once he has them released.”

“I can’t speak to that, ma’am. Maybe you want to talk to one of our doctors. Unfortunately, Dr. Prax herself is away in D.C. at the moment, but I can take you into the medical center to see who else might be available. Or if you’d rather we could check out the residential accommodations.” She looked over at Sean, who was still looking at his shoes. “There are a lot of young people here,” she said. “There’s a very active community of residential youths. The tutoring program is really one of the best of its kind, if falling behind on your academics is something that you’re worried about.”

“It’s awfully depressing to think about children making a home in a hospital,” the mother said.

“I understand where you’re coming from with that,” Mia said. “You’re right. But like I was saying before, our facilities provide more than just medical treatment. Not everyone who’s here is only here because they need to be for their health, and the ones who aren’t can help the ones who are to feel more like they’re still part of the world. I’m not sick enough to need round the clock access to care anymore, but doing volunteer work here has provided me with access to so many other kinds of resources that most people like us don’t get.” Her eyes flickered to Sean.

“How do your parents feel about all the time you spend here?” His mother asked.

Mia shifted her smile and silently huffed. “I have a position at an internationally recognized facility, and I receive private tutoring that they don’t have to pay for. They don’t have to worry about my health, and they don’t have to worry about my education. My parents are thrilled.”

She refrained from verbalizing the curiosity that had plagued her for the past several years regarding just how much of that thrill was actually relief at not having to care for a seemingly continuously sick child. It generally didn’t do her any good to dwell on personal matters when she was giving orientations.

Sean’s parents exchanged looks that embodied nothing remotely resembling thrill or relief.

Mia continued. “Is there something particular you’d like to see next? Or are there any other questions I can answer?”

“Questions,” Sean’s mother said. “Yes. We have those. But I don’t know how many of them you can answer.”

“Well I can tr-” Mia began.

Sean’s father interrupted. “I think I’d like to talk to someone who knows a little more than this young lady- no offense, honey.”

“Oh none taken,” She paused before adding “dear,” then continued before they could register and respond to the endearment. “There are doctors here who are experts in your son’s condition; and I admit to not being one of them. I’m sure if we go inside we’ll be able to find someone else willing to meet with you.”

“What do you say?” The man asked.

The woman turned to her son. “What would you like to do, Sean?”

He shrugged. His mother sighed and turned to Mia.

“I think we’d like to see the inside of this specialized hospital you’ve been boasting about.”

“Of course! Right this way.”

She led them back along a path they had already trodden over, thrilled to be in motion again. The anxious tingling that had been with her all day still remained, but the reverberance of each footfall throughout her body did as much to distract from it as she figured anything could.

“And before I forget,” she said as they walked. “You should take these.” She pulled a pair of cards from her pocket and passed them backwards to Sean and his parents. “In case you have questions that come up later on. Those have my professional email, phone number, and Elthconnect information on them. Reach out to me on any of those and I should get back within a few days.”

She pretended not to notice the woman behind her folding the card in half before shoving it into her pocket.

“What’s that last one?” The father asked.

“Elthconnect?” Mia repeated. “It’s a social network that puts Elthentity people in touch with each other. I recommend making an account. I’ve found some great resources through it.”

He made a noncommittal sound as Mia led them through the entryway of the facility’s main building. A gust of strong air from the ventilation system welcomed them in, and Mia waved to a pair of men who were talking over the front desk, before turning back to her charges and gesturing them toward one of the nearest halls.

“Right this way.”

The tour of the building was much shorter than the tour of the grounds had been. There were only so many parts of it that Mia had free access to, and after a while the parents began shooting suspicious looks at the patients who sometimes passed by them in the hall.

She was relieved when eleven o’clock came and she was able to hand them off to one of the nurses and head back to the Gray Building. It was all fine and good to be doing whatever she could to help out the facility’s overworked staff, or make things easier for the new patients, but engaging with people like Sean’s parents always left her feeling drained.
